Well come. We start in poltava, ukraine. Where russia has carried out one of the deadliest strikes in months. Ukraine's defence ministry says at least 51 people have been killed, with 219 injured. The attack occurred at a military communications institute, in the central eastern part of the country. These images verified by the bbc show the aftermath of that attack. The country's defence ministry says people were hit as they headed to bomb shelters. Emergency workers are trying to rescue survivors from the rubble. President zelensky vowed to hold those responsible to account for the attack. Nick beake is at the scene, and has just sent us this report, which contains some distressing images. The missiles tore through the ukrainian military academy at 9 o'clock this morning, just as lessons were starting, levelling huge parts of the complex and killing dozens instantly. Army medics battle to save the injured. Hold on, he shouts, you're a good lad. Tonight we arrived in a stunned city. The emergency services of poltava could do little more than clear up the wreckage. We met mikita, a cadet, who was inside the training centre when it happened. The second missile hit three seconds after the first, he tells us, i ran outside, there was smoke and dust everywhere. Lots of people were outside having a cigarette, and many of them were killed. Yana, one of the many locals whose windows were smashed. Ukraine has taken a body blow, too. Translation: it's very hard. I take it personally. My husband is fighting on the front line. Soldiers have died here, and i know there are still soldiers under the rubble. Their wives are waiting for them. Then, as we were moving location, another air raid alert blared, and the instant fear of another possible hit here. The air raid sirens have just gone off once again, and so a lot of the emergency services who are inside the building, clearing out the debris have now moved out, even though there are still some people we know underneath the rubble. President zelensky condemned the attack, calling the russians scum and promised to get answers. Translation: i've ordered i a full and prompt investigation into the circumstances of what happened. All necessary services are involved in the rescue operation. I am grateful to everyone who has been saving lives from the very first moments following the strike. President putin had vowed that punishment was on its way after the incursion into russia a month ago. And it seems it arrived today in seconds in the deadliest attack on ukraine for a year. Colonel brendan kearney is a former chief of staff for us marine corps forces in europe and africa. He told me this latest attack is consistent with russia's strategy in this war. It really is the change in russia's military strategy. As you recall over the last two plus years, the russians have consistently mixed in attacks on true military targets, which this school is, but then they've also gone ahead and, for lack of a better word, terrorised the ukrainian population with indiscriminate missile and artillery bombardments all over ukraine that have nothing to do with military operations. I think sadly this particular one today, although it appears to be in an urban area, a military school is a justifiable target under the laws of war. So it may be sadly that too many civilians and also, of course, innocent military personnel where they are doing nothing except studying, are victims of another example of russian aggression and retribution. What will it mean for ukraine's operational ability? you know, i don't think it's really going to have much of an impact on it. It is a school, and it's been a school since the 1960s. The russians, they have attended it. Their own troops when they were part of the soviet union, so they knew exactly where it was, where it is. In terms of its operational impact, i think by now the ukrainians have got really more than enough redundant communications capabilities, so, will it have an impact certainly on the training pipeline of getting trained personnel to the front lines? a degree of that, but for the most part, i really don't think it's going to have a significant operational impact. President zelensky has been calling for more air defence systems and long—range missiles to attack targets deeper into russia. Do you think he is going to get what he's been asking for? well, i certainly hope so. Not only today, but really that tragedy that occurred over the weekend in that schoolyard, which was a glide bomb that did that damage. And that was a completely civilian targets. And that was a completely civilian target. He has got every justification to ask, and with these weapon systems the west has been providing, there has been absolutely unconscionable attitude on the part of the west, particularly washington, dc in hindering the full use of these weapon systems. If we give them to zelensky, he should be able to use them and use them well, exactly within their design parameters and against targets that he feels are justified. And so far, you know, the ukrainians have done a marvellous job compared to the russians and really trying to minimise russian civilian casualties. The russians have been just the opposite, so i hope that whatever he's asking for, we are giving and we let him use those weapon systems freely. French authorities say at least 12 people, including a pregnant woman, have died, after a boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized in the english channel. Around fifty people were rescued in an operation involving boats and helicopters. The french coastguard says the boat got into difficulty off cape gris—nez at around 6am local time, and everyone on board ended up in the water. French rescue helicopters busy once again today, bringing casualties from the sea to the shore. This the scene of a harbour in the big port city of boulogne, bodies on stretchers. Among the dead, six children and a pregnant woman. Translation: there used to be 30 or 40 people on these small boats, now there are 70 or 80 people. Most likely, the boat collapsed very fast. The smugglers had provided no more than eight life jackets, so if help had not arrived so fast, far more people would have faced certain death. French officials say cross channel smugglers are increasingly cramming far too many people on board their flimsy boats. 51 people, many it's thought from east africa, were rescued in choppy seas. But in other boats, dozens if not hundreds more today made the same crossing without significant trouble. Some here being taken ashore in dover in a rescue boat. These voyages are illegal under british law and increasingly dangerous. The death toll this year already more than double last yea r*s total. In april, we filmed an overcrowded boat in trouble just off the french coast. Five died, including a young girl trampled to death. In another incident, five drowned in icy water close to shore. So far this year, over 20,000 migrants have reached the uk in small boats. That's slightly more than at the same point last year. Just last week, the french and british governments promised tougher and better coordinated action to break up the smuggling gangs. But the french authorities have warned that their forces patrolling the beaches are facing growing violence, and charities say a more nuanced approach is needed. It needs a much more multi pronged approach, that, of course, includes policing and smashing the gangs, but critically also includes safe ways for people to reach the uk or to have their case heard before they have to take a dangerous crossing. For now, the smuggling business continues. The risks are increasingly obvious. But tens of thousands of determined people are not put off. Former add to the new york governor cathy hochul has been disclosed as an agent of china. Linda sun and her husband were arrested in long island. Linda sun was previously ms hochul chief of staff continued until she was fired last year. It is allegedly followed from china's government representatives to advise on chinese interest. A bbc investigation has found there's been a rapid rise in israeli settler outposts in the west bank, an area occupied by israel since it captured the territory in 1967. Russia's president vladimir putin has met his mongolian counterpart in the country's capital, ulan—bator. It's his first visit to a member country of the international criminal court since it issued an arrest warrant against him last year. Anatol lieven is head of the eurasia programme, and director of the quincy institute for responsible statecraft, in washington. I asked him why putin has chosen to go to mongolia now, when there is an international criminal court warrant for his arrest. Well, there is no chance that mongolia would arrest him. Mongolia is a country with a tiny population sandwiched between russia and china entirely dependent on russia for its oil imports, which also needs russia to balance against china, a country which mongolia fears, in mongolia it as likely to arrest putin in costa rica would be to arrest biden if he came to visit. As to why putin has gone there, i think it is partly indeed, if you like, stick a finger in the eye if not of the icc, then certainly of the west to demonstrate that the west cannot in fact dictate to many countries around the world. And part of the general russian programme of trying to shore up decent relations with countries around russia's borders. It's just over 7 years since the grenfell tower disaster in west london, when a fire which burned for 60 hours, killed 72 people. Tomorrow the public inquiry*s final report into the blaze, will finally be published. Tom symonds has been hearing from three people, whose lives have forever been changed, by the tragedy. For a long time, those screams really did haunt me. I felt helpless. There was nothing really i could do. It is only through being brave enough and honest enough to look at our failings that we can grow. There is not closure i to the whole situation. There's still an awful lot. Pope francis has spent his first day injakarta in indonesia at the start of an historic and ambitious trip to the asia—pacific region. Indonesia is the world's most populous muslim—majority country and the vatican says the focus of the trip is inter—faith harmony. He was welcomed to jakarta by refugees and orphaned children at a reception at the city's papal diplomatic mission. The 87—year old has reduced his travel in recent years due to health problems, but this twelve—day trip is his longest as pontiff. As well as visiting indonesia, he will also travel to papua new guinea, east timor and singapore. He is set to travel nearly 33,000 kilometres during the trip. And he is scheduled to attend more than a0 events. Jonathan had is following the indonesia stop of the two. He continuing — indonesia stop of the two. He: continuing a long—standing policy of the vatican of upholding the best possible relations with the country in ways is a marvel of multifaith tolerance. Indonesia does have the largest muslim population but it is not an islamic state. Islam is not the official religion and there are significant minorities including around 8 million roman catholics and an indonesian modern state has always accepted a place for all faiths and so it is always a scene, given that it has such a large muslim population, as a showcase of power relations between different faiths can be managed and in general most indonesian governments have stuck to the secular origins of the modern country when it declared independence and made a place for all these religions and the vatican has significant diplomatic representation of them. It has been 35 years since the last bit of a pope so this bug, pope francis's visit it to a different country which popejohn paul ii visited back then. At that stage it was still an authoritarian government and the issue of east timor because a lot of friction between the vatican and that indonesian government. This time around, pope francis will be celebrating the openness of indonesia but it does not mean there are no problems between faith and indonesia. It is always a sensitive issue managing them. Whether relations in different parts of indonesia between christian and muslim community have been strained in recent years when we have had the growth of example islamic extremism in the region. Those are all factors the pope will be conscious of the ghosts of these very symbolic big meetings. The one to the largest mosque in southeast asia, injakarta, to highlight the valuing of relationships between different faiths and then a big rally, a big mass to be held in one of the largest stadiums injakarta to which roman catholics from all over indonesia and many from far—flung islands will travel for this probably once—in—a—lifetime trip to see a pope. Onceinalifetime trip to see a po e. * , ~ ~ a pope. And this week the knife forum for african _ a pope. And this week the knife forum for african cooperation. | forum for african cooperation. It is currently africa's largest trading partner providing millions of dollars of loans for infrastructure and many african countries have been left with huge debt. We have taken the relationship between china and the african nations attending. The relationship _ i think the relationship is one that is strengthening is one that is strengthening with each decade. It goes back to the days of liberation struggle across the african continent. However, since the opening in 1978 of chinese economy, we have seen the relationship moving towards a much more pragmatic, um, uh, way in terms of dealing much more in the economic sphere. And therefore i think, uh, through this forum, um, they tend to deal with the challenges they face and opening new opportunities. So what do you make of the timing, then, of this summit coming when there are intense geopolitical tensions between china and the west, as well as a faltering chinese economy? i think for most africans, they see these tensions as mainly the western countries and china and had nothing to do with them like their counterparts in asia. Africans wants to act in in their own interests and advancing their own interests in the sense that, they navigate the entire geopolitics in favour of their economies and their people, and staying away from the tensions, which really has to do with the west and china. So are these african nations having obviously have their own priorities and their own goals. It's navigating the relationship with these bigger powers to work towards their own interests. Indeed, i think that doing the same with the west. They don't choose, and contrary to the view in the western world that africans are just following, i think the africans are looking at the forum itself. They they tend to look at each based foreign policy that there are certain issues that china is good at, and they tend to go with china on those specific issues. While going with the west on other issues without necessarily taking either china or western world's position on global issues. A new street in prague has been named after sir nicholas winton, the british man who helped save hundreds of mostlyjewish children from the nazis. The street is by a local railway station from where tens of thousands of czechoslovak jews were deported during the holocaust. Rob cameron reports. This document saved milena fleischmann from certain death. A pass, allowing a nine—year—old jewish girl to travel by train across nazi germany in august 1939, and start a new life in england. Milena, now lady milena grenfell—baines, had no idea then that it had all been arranged by a young stockbrokerfrom london. I think it is so important because you know, very soon, no eyewitnesses will be here any more, and people need to remember, why is that street called nicholas winton street? the story of how nicholas winton saved hundreds of children from the holocaust only came to light in the 1980s, thanks to the british tv programme that's life. Can i ask, is there anyone in our audience tonight who owes their life to nicholas winton? if so, could you stand up, please? it's since been told countless times, in films, documentaries and books, and now a new street, running past the very station where czechoslovakjews boarded trains for the camps. A ninth train, the largest transport, carrying 250 children, was scheduled for the 1st of september 1939, but then, the war intervened and it never left. We don't know what happened to those children, but most of them would have been herded onto trains here at praha bubny station and sent to theresienstadt and then to auschwitz. Only a handful are believed to have survived. Rob cameron, bbc news, prague. Japan'sjunko hagiwara has caused a stir in spain's traditional flamenco world by unexpectedly winning the prize for best dancer at the country's leading flamenco festival — the first foreigner to do so. The 48—year—old who performs under the stage name la yunko was met with a mixture of applause and some jeering when awarded with best female dancer at the annual cante de las minas festival. Here's our reporter meghan 0wen. This isjunko hagiwara dancing at spain's most prestigious flamenco competition. Now, up until this point, it's only been won by spanish dancers. Butjudges were but judges were unanimous butjudges were unanimous in their support. She was greeted with applause but also boos. Hagiwara's win has also sparked a social media backlash, and the spanish newspaper el pais has picked up on this. It says this shows clear prejudice that sometimes borders on the racist, and it also adds that they seem to say that if you are not andalusian, or at least spanish, it is impossible to know flamenco. Now, the competition has also been accused of trying to internationalise itself, something that the organisers deny. Now, in terms of hagiwara and her background, she's been living in spain for over 22 years. She moved to seville in 2002, and she teaches flamenco and is well known in the area. In terms of her response to this backlash, she said when i dance, i don't think i am a foreigner, that i am japanese. I am simply on stage. She also said in a recent interview that in japanese culture we place a lot of value on hiding the feeling and in flamengo you have to show it. In japan it flamengo you have to show it. Injapan it is for the inside and flamengo is for the outside. She also went on to say she considers herself to be a purist of the dance. Thank you for your company here on bbc news. Hello. A lot brighter out there today than we saw through yesterday, but still enough cloud around to produce some showers here and there, especially across eastern and the far west of the country. But overall a much better day than we saw through yesterday. Showers this afternoon mainly will be across parts of east anglia, the southeast, the odd sharp one, still humid here and some across western scotland, northern ireland, though western parts of northern ireland will continue to brighten up. Eastern scotland, northern england, western parts of england and also wales, many places actually dry through this afternoon and with just light winds it will still feel quite pleasant out there, even though we have got fresher air pushing into how we had at the weekend. The most humid air still across east anglia and the southeast. Any lengthier, brighter breaks here, we could see temperatures between 2a and 26 degrees. Now into this evening and overnight. Some showers continue to filter across the country in batches, particularly later on in northern ireland and southwest scotland. But for southern scotland and the north east of england, where we could see some clearer skies, here the lowest of the temperatures into tomorrow morning, maybe down to around 4 or five degrees. Not quite as humid as last night either across some southern and eastern parts of england. But where we've got the coolest of the weather to begin with, the best of the sunshine, enjoy the morning sunshine because there's going to be more showers cropping up as we go through the day. East anglia, south east again and more widely across southern scotland, northern ireland, wales and western england in particular. Temperatures also continue to drop that little bit more as well. Tomorrow, around 15 to 20 degrees, the highs, if anything a nudge down where you want early september. Beyond that, it looks increasingly light now. We'll see low pressure develop to the south of us, across france through the second half of the week, strengthening these easterly winds, bringing rain across southern half of the uk, but also introducing, reintroducing, i should say, more in the way of humid air. And you'll see temperatures creep up as we head towards the weekend. Not quite there on thursday. Thursday is almost the transition day. Outbreaks of rain across england and wales, heaviest towards central and southern areas. Does look like scotland, northern ireland, savejust one or two showers, will be largely dry. Best of brightness in the north west, and temperatures actually creeping up here compared with what we've seen during the next couple of days. But as we go towards the end of the week, whilst rain continues on and off across southernmost parts, it does look like we will see increasing amounts of sunshine to the north and west. And as you can see in 0ban, enniskillen and manchester, temperatures rising too in the low to mid 20s. Take care.
