Welcome along, thank you forjoining us. Having lost all four of his previous grand slam quarterfinals — taylor fritz has made it made it fifth time lucky. The american is into the semifinals of a major for the first time — and that at his home grand slam after knocking out the fourth seed alexander zverev, who's at the bottom of your screen, in four sets. Fritz, who's 26 now, seeded 12th, keeps alive his hopes of becoming the first american men's singles champion at flushing meadows since andy roddick in 2003. I've had a lot of looks at quarterfinals over the past couple of years and uh, today, just today, just felt different. I really felt like it was my time to take it a step further. And i mean, it's only fitting i'm doing it here on this court at the open in front of the crowd. It's not just taylor fritz dreaming big. Another american — emma navarro is also into her first grand slam semi final. The home crowd in new york turbo—charging her performance navarro — top of your screen — knocked out the defending champion coco gauff in the previous round, and backed it up with victory over spain's paula badosa — fighting back from 5—1 and a double—break down in the second set to win the match 6—2 7—5. To cricket, and from the start of next year, the england senior men's team will have just one coach across all formats of the game. Brendon mccullum, who has turned around the fortunes of the test team in his two years in charge, will now take on the one—day and t20 sides after matthew mott was sacked after the t20 world cup when they were outclassed by the eventual champions india. Mccullum has also extended his contract until the end of 2027. Here's our chief cricket writer stephan shemilt. . . I think a lot of people would say it's the best news for english cricket since the last time they gave brendon mccullum a job, because he's done such a good job with the test team. Like you say, for two years, the testjob and the white ball job have been separate. England tried that ten years ago as well. And the problem is it almost creates a bit of a two—tier system in english cricket that one team maybe gets left behind a little bit. And inevitably that is the white ball team. And what we've seen over the past couple of years is that the test team have thrived, and the white ball team have gone backwards slightly. They've had two disappointing world cups. When brendon mccullum was given the testjob, we thought, and a lot of people in cricket thought, that it'd be more suited to be a white ball coach. Mccullum was a fine test cricketer for new zealand, but he really made his game in the white ball format. But he said, look, i don't want to take on a cushy number. And at the time england were 50 over world cup champions. Matthew mott soon turned them into t20 world champions. Mccullum said look, i want a challenge, i want something to really put my mark on, and which he's done with the test team, not only with their upturn in results, but with the way that they play as well. And it's all about the atmosphere for brendon mccullum, the vibes. That's what he's done with the test team. Leicester city have won their appeal against a decision that could have led to a points deduction for an alleged breach of premier league profit and sustainability rules. Leicester's appeal was based on the fact they were playing in the english football league — not the premier league — at the time the charge was issued. The independent panel has now found the premier league did not have the jurisdiction to punish the club and can't take action. In a statement, the premier league says it's surprised and disappointed by the panel's decision. Victor 0simhen has long been one of the most coveted strikers in european football. The nigerian fired napoli to the serie a title two seasons ago. He's only 25 and has been linked with moves to some of europe's top clubs over the past couple of years, but when the transfer window closed on friday, he was still a napoli player, albeit one that has been frozen out by the new boss antonio conte. But, with the transfer window still open in turkey for another ten days, here's our senior football reporter nizaar kinsella, on how galatasaray offered him a way out. The turkish league isn't really a destination for the truly elite talents anymore, certainly not at the age of victor 0simhen, around 25 years old. But galatasaray is a big club, and they do have a bit of pull. But really this is an opportunistic transfer because galatasaray have come in when no one else can come in. Their transfer window is open in turkey for ten more days. All the other windows in the top five leagues are closed. Chelsea tried to do a deal, couldn't get it over the line because of the cost. And now galatasaray can get a really nice loan deal here and just get him in on loan for a season and he can make a huge impact to them. So opportunistic, unique strange situation. But those scenes of victor 0simhen coming off the plane, arriving in front of the galatasaray fans, thousands of them waiting outside the airport, showjust how big the support is of that club and how much excitement there is for this move, this unique move that we rarely see in football. He renewed his contract with napoli in december 2023, and i think he priced himself out of the move. He put 100 million release clause on his contract there. So clubs had to pay over 100 million to get him in, and then they had to pay his wages, which are well over £200,000 a week. And just these days, big clubs are a bit sensitive, a bit scared of paying those kind of sums. So it is rare to get a player for that kind of money these days. And i think that clubs just weren't willing to pull the trigger. And i think that maybe if he does well in turkey, he can attract those moves that he wants, but maybe also napoli needs to drop the price tag, and maybe he needs to drop his wage demands as well to get that big move that he really covets. Next to the paralympics, where 63 gold medals will be on offer on day seven of the games. Day six saw more success for china in the pool as they stay top of the medal table, and there was another gold for great britain. Faye rogers finished just ahead of her team—mate callie— anne warrington in the final of the women's s10100m butterfly. The pair were the fastest qualifiers for the final. Rogers* gold medal is paralympicgb*s 30th of the games. And on the track britain's sammy kinghorns won another silver, this time in the women's1,500m t54. Kinghorn followed up second in the 800m t53 with another excellent performance — she is now a four—time paralympic medallist next to cycling and a day of drama at the vuelta a espana — where wout van art — the man leading both the points and king of the mountains classifications — has been forced to withdraw from the race. The belgian rider crashed and injured his knee in the wet conditions on the descent of the collada llomena on stage 16 to lagos de covadonga. He attempted to rejoin the race on another bike but was unable to pedal because of the pain. After an injury hit season, he had a hat—trick of stage wins over the first two weeks but his hopes at the vuelta are now over. And in wet and foggy conditions, the stage was won by spain's marc soler. He broke away from the pack to take victory. The overall race leader — australia's ben 0'connor — holds onto the red jersey, but primoz roglic, his nearest rival, is now within five seconds of his lead. And finally, double olympic champion martine grael will become the first female driver in sail gp. The brazilian will lead her country's inaugural team when the season gets under way in november. The racing series started in 2019 and involves mixed—gender teams in 50—foot catamarans. 37 women have taken part so far, including britain's most successful female 0lympic sailor hannah mills, but none have been given the role of driver until now. Being the first on a strong league is going to set up a good example for the other leagues. I think it's, uh, there are examples that, um, like in the volvo ocean race where the girls, most of the times were not doing such big roles in the beginning, but then they started getting, um, you know, more important roles and, you know, being more active. So i think itjust, it goes on from the first, uh, moment to develop. So i think, uh, maybe it's setting, um, a pace for, uh, for the other classes. I think there's a lot of circuits in in sailing in general, and i think there's very little, uh, which women leading or almost none. So i think hopefully this would set up an example for sailing. I think i'm really excited for some close racing. I think that's as good as good as it can get. And, uh, we're going to have, uh, especially me. I'm going to have a huge learning curve to understand these boats and just to get sailing. So i think it will take a little while, you know, i've been following the newer teams in the league and it takes some time. So i'm not headed with big expectations, but i think it's just a matter of time to get it going. And i'm excited to see where we can get it. And a reminder of our top story, america's taylor fritz and emma navarro are both into their first grand slam semifinals — and that at their home major — the us open. You can get more reaction to the that — and the latest from flushing meadows — on the bbc sport website but from me and the team that's but from me and the team that's all for now goodbye. Hello. All for now goodbye. Look, brighter out there today than we saw through yesterday, but still enough cloud around to produce some showers here and there, especially across eastern and the far west of the country. But overall a much better day than we saw through yesterday. Showers this afternoon mainly will be across parts of east anglia, the southeast, the odd sharp one, still humid here and some across western scotland, northern ireland, though western parts of northern ireland will continue to brighten up. Eastern scotland, northern england, western parts of england and also wales, many places actually dry through this afternoon and with just light winds it will still feel quite pleasant out there, even though we have got fresher air pushing into how we had at the weekend. The most humid air still across east anglia and the southeast. Any lengthier, brighter breaks here, we could see temperatures between 2a and 26 degrees. Now into this evening and overnight. Some showers continue the transition day. To filter across the country in batches, particularly later on in northern ireland and southwest scotland. But for southern scotland and the north east of england, where we could see some clearer skies, here the lowest of the temperatures into tomorrow morning, maybe down to around four or five degrees. Not quite as humid as last night either across some southern and eastern parts of england. But where we've got the coolest of the weather to begin with, the best of the sunshine, enjoy the morning sunshine because there's going to be more showers cropping up as we go through the day. East anglia, south east again and more widely across southern scotland, northern ireland, wales and western england in particular. Temperatures also continue to drop that little bit more as well. Tomorrow, around 15—20 degrees, the highs, if anything a nudge down where you want early september. Beyond that, it looks increasingly light now. We'll see low pressure develop to the south of us, across france through the second half of the week, strengthening these easterly winds, bringing rain across southern half of the uk, but also introducing, reintroducing, i should say, more in the way of humid air. And you'll see temperatures creep up as we head towards the weekend. Not quite there on thursday. Thursday is almost welcome to newsday. Reporting live from singapore, i'm steve lai.
