Killed by israeli fire. The israeli Prime Minister, benjamin netanyahu, blamed hamas leaders, saying the killings showed they did not want a deal. The Opposition Leader Yair Lapid accused Mr Netanyahu of deciding not to save the hostages. Jon donnison reports from jerusalem. Six more dead israeli hostages in gaza. Carmel gat, who was a0. Alexander lobanov, 32. Almog sarusi, aged 27. Eden yerushalmi, 24. Ori danino, who was 25. And the youngest, hersh Goldberg Polin, just 23, who was also an american citizen. With broken hearts, the Goldberg Polin family is devastated to announce the death of their son and brother, hersh. They thank you all for your Love And Support and ask for privacy at this time. Just a few days ago, his mother, rachel, had called for his release. Hersh, we are working Day And Night and we will never stop. But she will never see her only son alive again. Israels military says the six bodies were found in a Tunnel Under Rafah in the south of gaza. Its chief spokesperson, daniel hagari, said they had recently been brutally murdered by hamas. The islamist Group Today denied that, saying they were killed in israeli strikes. But in a video statement, israels Prime Minister was clear who he thought was to blame. We saw the unimaginable cruelty of the hamas killers on the 7th of october, and we saw it again in the tunnels under rafah. But Mr Netanyahu is under pressure. Last night, there again were protests from Hostage Families and clashes with police. They say the israeli leader is putting his own personal political ambitions ahead of securing a Ceasefire And Hostage release deal, and that he has the blood on his hands. Meanwhile, in gaza, a rare bit of positive news on the humanitarian front. A Mass Polio Vaccination programme for Hundreds Of Thousands of children has begun, with area specific pauses in fighting. But it is a long way from the comprehensive Ceasefire Deal that diplomats have been pushing forfor months. The Protesters Injerusalem are furious that more hostages are confirmed to have died. This morning we are grieving the death of six hostages. They should have come back alive, they could have come back alive. We need a deal now. They need to come back alive lets look at the numbers of hostages still being held. 97 people taken on the seventh october are still thought to be in gaza. It is believed 64 are still alive, although hamas claims this number is lower, with 33 reported by the idf to be dead, but still in gaza. The remains of 37 hostages have been recovered from gaza. Ii7 hostages have been released or rescued. Noga tarnopolsky is a freelance journalist injerusalem. She described the general mood among the israeli public following the recovery of the bodies. Its a very, very grim mood. These hostages include some whose families have been among the most active publicly to try to get the hostages back. So israelis have been following their stories closely. But i think most agonising and most impactful was the israeli Armys Announcement this morning that they were killed just recently, you know, in the last day or two. And because this follows a very radical decision by the israeli government made in the middle of the night between thursday and friday. Theres a very widespread feeling that they were betrayed by their own government. I dont think that changes any Israelis Point of view about the cruelty of hamas, the islamist militia that still rules gaza. But i think that there is a majority, certainly a majority, of israelis feel that their own government is betraying its citizens. So what is this doing, then, for the political support amongst israeli people . For benjamin netanyahu, especially in the light of this declaration that he intends for the Israeli Army to stay in the philadelphi corridor, that narrow strip between gaza and egypt. Right. Its a very strange thing, and i think we Cant Overstress that, at about 2am in the morning between thursday and friday, which is already the weekend in israel, netanyahu presented his cabinet with a declarative vote and basically forced the ten members of his Security Cabinet to vote on it and got it declared. Despite the opposition of the Israeli Army, of the entire Security Establishment in israel, in spite of the Screaming Opposition of the minister of defence, that the israeli government was declaring that israeli soldiers would remain on the Egypt Gaza Border No Matter What deal for the release of hostages is proposed. One of the ways this is interpreted in israel is that netanyahu was telling hamas, you cant use these hostages to get a deal. They are worthless to us. And so they were killed. And that is, as you can imagine, a very harsh feeling. That said, netanyahu is a very unpopular. Hes powerful, but hes an unpopular Prime Minister. Hes been very unpopular for a long time. He has about the support of 20 of the population. As we speak there are tens of thousands of people streaming to protest all over this country. And it looks like a general strike is going to be announced tonight. But his Coalition Partners are sticking by him, so it doesnt appear that hes in imminent danger of being toppled. You mentioned those protests, so we can see live pictures on our screens now of people assembling injerusalem, answering the call to come out onto The Streets. After what has happened with these hostages, what difference will it make . How will this Influence Benjamin Mean netanyahu . Benjamin netanyahu . I think theres a very real concern that it wont influence him. Netanyahu appears in recent days and weeks to be ever more detached from the people of israel, the citizens of israel. The fact that his polling is so low appears only to kind of stiffen his back about his positions. And again, he is surrounded. And his cabinet, both within his party and with coalition members, with really radical extremists, the sort of people who never had a place in the israeli political arena before. And because he is an indicted Prime Minister on trial, and most of the political parties in israel wouldntjoin him to form a government, he took them on. And so now its this sort of Faustian Bargain to hold on to power and to do as much as they possibly can, despite the feelings of a majority of israelis. A journalist who has ajournalist who has been working for many years in israel and the Palestinian Territories speaking to us a bit earlier. We have been showing you these live pictures alongside that interview and they are coming to us from where the funeral is taking the place of one of the six hostages whose bodies have been recovered from gaza today. It is the funeral of almog, 27, described by his family as a vibrant and positive person who liked travelling, playing the guitar, and was kidnapped from the Music Festival last october on the seventh. He had been attending with his girlfriend, shaha, who was killed in that attack. His family say that almog stayed with her when she was wounded and was subsequently captured and taken to gaza. This funeral is of course taking place alongside these protests injerusalem, Tel Aviv and other places across israel, demanding that the israeli government comes to a Ceasefire Deal that would also enable the return of the other hostages. Some of whom have died in captivity, been killed in captivity. But some who their families believe are still alive. So, these are the latest pictures from people gathering, making that demand. We have also got some other Breaking News to bring us now, we have heard that the opposition is really politician has been calling for a general strike. Now union chiefs in israel are ordering a complete strike on monday. This in support of gaza hostages, the thinking to being from the opposition and the union leaders that if the economy can be affected then perhaps the prime Minister Netanyahu will feel compelled to get a deal across the line. Un officials and local Health Workers in gaza are rolling out a Mass Polio Vaccination programme. Israel and hamas have agreed to a series of limited pauses in fighting so the scheme can proceed safely. The World Health Organization says at least 90 of children under ten will need to be vaccinated for the campaign to succeed. The Roll Out was organised after a ten month old baby was partly paralysed by the first case of the virus in gaza in a quarter of a century. Healthcare workers hoping to vaccinate 640,000 children under the age of ten against polio over the course of the next few days. The World Health Organization has approved the release of 1. 6 million doses of the Polio Vaccine the Roll Out will take place in several phases from the first to the 5th Of September on saturday, medics vaccinated children at one hospital in a symbolic lets speak to fadi abed, Communications Officer at medglobal, who is currently in deiral balah, in central gaza. Voting is taking place in two elections in Eastern Germany where the far right Afd Party is expected to perform strongly. The party is anti immigration; wants to replace the euro with the deutschmark; and opposes the national Governments Approach to the war in ukraine and climate change. For more on the significance of these regional elections ive been speaking to our Europe Correspondent Jessica Parker whos in the eastern state of thuringia. The context is, people might say, well, these are two regional elections. Why do they matter to the broader picture . Well, this would be the greatest success for the far right in State Elections since the end of the second world war. Now, for some germans, that is a nightmarish scenario. But for those who are Cheering Alternative for deutschland on. And ive been speaking to supporters over the last week here in the state of thuringia, they talk a lot about immigration and concerns they have about what they describe as mass immigration. And thats been fuelled, i think, after last Weeks Attack in solingen, where three people were stabbed and the suspect detained was a syrian asylum seeker, a failed syrian asylum seeker. There are concerns as well about the cost of living, as you mentioned, sending weapons to ukraine. So the Afds Message does seem to be resonating, particularly, though, with people here in the east of germany, the former communist east, where theres also a lot of dissatisfaction about the Way Reunification has been handled over recent decades. So youve got to look at this as something that combines more short term concerns with things that have been brewing for a very long time as well. So how are other parties trying to position themselves as a credible choice to people who have the concerns that the afd seemed to be addressing. Yeah, i mean, its been interesting in the last week, actually, the Coalition Government in berlin, Headed Up by chancellor olaf scholz, they started announcing tougher controls on Knife Crime and asylum laws as well. Many saw that as almost perhaps a panicked reaction ahead of this Weeks Election where the spd, the greens, the liberals, all of the parties who are in that coalition are predicted according to the polls, to do pretty badly, might not even make it into the State Parliament in some cases, so it could be a disastrous result from then. Then the cdu, which is the sort of conservative party, of course, that was The Party of chancellor angela merkel. Weve seen the leader there hardening his positions, trying to sound tougher on these issues as well. So there is that kind of response. And then really interestingly as well, theres a new party, a New Kid On The Block called the sort of Alliance Bfw for short. Bsw. Now that is Headed Up by a woman called sahra wagenknecht. Shes from east germany, and shes trying to blend a mix of more left wing policies economically, but more conservative policies socially. A new party launched just this year, and shes been placing a strong third in polls in both saxony and thuringia, so she looks like she could perform really well. Jessica parker in germany. Lets Ta Ke lets take you back to israel where the funeral is taking place of one of the hostages whose body has been recovered from gossett this weekend. It is the funeral of almog, 27 years old. He had been missing since the morning of October The 7th last year when hamas attacked the nova Music Festival that he had been attending with his girlfriend, shaha. She died in that attack. His family and now have his body back after 11 months. Of waiting. You are watching bbc news. Next, we bring you special coverage of the snp s party conference. We are in Conference Season now, lets showed the Scene Life in edinburgh. Where we expect to hear from first minister John Swinney in the next few minutes. In his Closing Speech at the conference he is expected to set out his governments priorities. This is being held at the edinburgh international Conference Centre and it is expected to start in a few moments time. While we wait for Mr Swinney to take to the stage, lets bring in our Scotland Political Correspondent andrew kerr. Eagerly awaiting to hear what Mr Sweeney has got to say. This comes off the back of a poor showing for the snp in the general election the summer. Yes, that is right. Good afternoon. Terrible Election Results for them back injuly, they got nine mps back in 2019 in the general election then, they had 48 mps. So you can see how bad of a result that was for them. How bad of a result that was forthem. I how bad of a result that was for them. I think one of the main aspects about this conference has been trying to see what went wrong with that result, trying to dissect that and it trying to get over it and it trying to get over it and Move On and look to the future. That is Whyjohn Sweeney is going to concentrate with his speech and what he is calling the peoples priority. His advisers say that he has a laser like focus on a number of Keyissues Laser like focus on a number of key issues that he is hoping will really appeal to people and i think maybe it make people feel that he is really tackling the Problems that they see in their lives. Some of those priorities include boosting economic growth, ending child poverty, improving public services, for example. John sweeney we are told is keen to highlight those issues, say that he is going to deal with them and then really deliver on that and deliver for the people of scotland. This ties in with what is happening on wednesday in the scottish parliament, it will be Mr Sweeneys programme for government, the Kings Speech in essence, his programme for government for the year ahead. Those are to tie in with his priorities there. That is what he will be attempting to set out in the hall today, Move On from that Election Result and try to look the future a bit. How will he explain away the fact that some of those Financial Decisions might be rather difficult . Financial decisions might be rather difficult . Yes, that is ri. Ht, rather difficult . Yes, that is right. And rather difficult . Yes, that is right, and he rather difficult . Yes, that is right, and he is rather difficult . Yes, that is right, and he is going rather difficult . Yes, that is right, and he is going to rather difficult . Yes, that is i right, and he is going to have a pretty tough time. When you are talking about improving public services, when you look at the nations finances. As part of that sequence of events with the speech today, and in his programme for government on wednesday, on tuesday we are going to get a big announcement from the Finance Secretary about millions of hundreds of millions of Pounds Worth of cuts across all government departments. Here at the Snp Blame at the labour party, they say that is the fault of Labour Austerity as they put it. Labour of course will disagree with that but that is what the snp say but that is how they describe it. This is part, i think, probably, ofan describe it. This is part, i think, probably, of an attempt to turn the tables slightly after that terrible election defeat. And try to focus on something that is really important for the snp. And that is the 2026 holyrood election, because the snp of course are The Party of government here in scotland and they want to remain at The Party of government when it comes to that vote in 2026 with Labour Scene as there main challengers for that to take the first ministers seat. I think that is a real priority for the snp here, to turn that fire on labourer and actually to be really critical of some of the things that the Labour Government have done just in their short time in office, such as ending the universal Winter Fuel payments. Those will be more targeted for pensioners receiving pension credit, for example. I think thatis credit, for example. I think that is what Mr Swinney will be trying to do. He wants to be in power and he also of course wants to remain in power and we have got those difficult cuts coming down the line. But of course we have not had the Uk Budget yet. The Chancellor Rachel reeves will be setting that out on the 30th of october. After that point, there is a possibility that things might improve in a sense. Scotland might get a bit more money than what they were expecting. Because of course they have got really not much of an idea at the moment. They might actually kind of turn the tables once again and be able to present a more positive story, but actually that Attack Line from the snp against labour is particularly to what extent is the snp being forced to address the sort of trouble that beset The Party, the lack of progress towards independence, the Police Independence, the Police Independence that investigation into The Partys finances, for example . It into The Partys finances, for example . Into The Partys finances, for examle . , example . It is interesting full Sto Example . It is interesting full stop there example . It is interesting full stop there are example . It is interesting full stop there are some example . It is interesting full stop there are some really. Example . When Nicola Sturgeon became first minister in 2014, she was addressing sell out crowd of 12,000 people, for example. The Police Investigation is continuing
