Win big at the oscars . Hello, im anna foster, live injerusalem. Lets look at the latest situation around gaza. You are seeing a moment ago images of a fresh airdrop of aid happening over gaza this morning. We know the us military along with the Jordanian Air force have been carrying out regular airdrops of aid with their parachutes and the pellets are heading down to the people below who so desperately need them. But there is another option to take aid in now starting to come into play as well, and that is the option of taking aid into gaza by sea. The us army says one of its Military Support Ships has set off from the us, it has set off from The Port Of Virginia and it is heading to gaza to build a temporary port to enable ships to unload aid, but that is expected to take two months before it is in place a temporary pier. And there is this cypriot ship, a spanish ship in cyprus are loaded and waiting for clearance to head towards gaza. This is the latest. There is little hope to be found amid the rubble in gaza, another night of israeli strikes has taken its toll. Images like this travel across the world. Across the atlantic, israels main ally sees them, too. The us President Joe Biden said he still supported israels right to defend itself, but he cautioned the israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the extent of the Military Operations he was sanctioning. He must, he must, he must pay more attention to the innocent lives being lost as a consequence of the action is taken. He is hurting, in my view, he is hurting israel more than helping israel by making the rest of the world, showing what his country stands for, and i think it is a big mistake. Just country stands for, and i think it is a big mistake. Is a big mistake. Just two weeks auo, is a big mistake. Just two weeks aao, mr is a big mistake. Just two weeks ago. Mr biden is a big mistake. Just two weeks ago, mr biden was is a big mistake. Just two weeks ago, mr biden was optimistic i is a big mistake. Just two weeks ago, mr biden was optimistic a l ago, mr biden was optimistic a ceasefire deal could be in place by ramadan. But now, Wejust Ceasefire Deal could be in place by ramadan. But now, we just hours to 90, ramadan. But now, we just hours to go, there is no sign of an imminent breakthrough. That means other options to get aid into gaza at scale are still being searched for is the fighting continues. Military airdrops above the strip deliver some food, but not enough. But that still wont meet the growing and desperate need. This mother cannot find anything in gaza to help her child. Translation i child. The charity behind it say they are confident they can unload them when they arrive in off gazas beaches. In the longer term, a us ship that will build a temporary pier to build the job has set sail, but the completion date is still two months away. And while it is constructed, the pressure on israel to get more help to suffering civilians will continue. Anna foster, bbc news. Joining me now is our correspondent Quentin Sommerville. From oppenheimer from larnaca. Any idea when this ship might set sail . Any idea when this ship might set sail . , , any idea when this ship might set sail . ,. , , , sail . Local media is reporting it will leave at sail . Local media is reporting it will leave at some sail . Local media is reporting it will leave at some point sail . Local media is reporting it will leave at some point this will leave at some point this afternoon. Apparently, they are waiting for is final Security Clearances from israel, which of course supervises pretty much all the aid that makes its way into gaza. There is about 150 to 200 tonnes of aid on board and it has everything from flour and rice to preprepared meals and water. It is quite a long journey, it is 210 nautical miles. Normally, that journey from Larnaca To Gaza would take about 15 hours, but because they are pulling that big heavy barge it might take longer. And the organisations involved have said a number of times the most difficult part of the journey will be less mild. You just touched on that in your report. Because landing in gaza will be very difficult. It doesnt have a functioning port. And of course, in parts of gaza, all Law And Order and Civil Society really has broken down since israels bombardment and ground invasion. And the need from the people in gaza is absolutely desperate. So there is always that danger that when the ship appears on the horizon and gets closer to shore, that people will start making their way towards it and into the water. We have seen pictures from one of the charities involved, world central kitchen, which seems to show a temporary pier being built inside gaza. There is heavy lifting equipment, large boulders and rocks are being moved towards the shore to make way for the preparation, for when the ship finally gets under way and starts thatjourney. find finally gets under way and starts that journey that ourney. And you are saying this that journey. And you are saying this is the that journey. And you are saying this is the first that journey. And you are saying this is the first ship, that journey. And you are saying this is the first ship, it that journey. And you are saying this is the first ship, it has that journey. And you are saying this is the first ship, it has an i this is the first ship, it has an amount of aid on board. But when we look at the airdrops and the sea corridor that is due to open, will that fill the void that has been left by far fewer trucks than would normally pass into gaza doing so since the war began . Hat normally pass into gaza doing so since the war began . Normally pass into gaza doing so since the war began . Not by a long shot. Since the war began . Not by a long shot there since the war began . Not by a long shot. There is since the war began . Not by a long shot. There is a since the war began . Not by a long shot. There is a very since the war began . Not by a long shot. There is a very quick since the war began . Not by a long shot. There is a very quick and shot. There is a very quick and effective way of getting aid into gaza and that is by truck and road, two entry points in southern gaza, one from egypt and one from israel. That system isnt functioning properly. You might even say it is not purpose. Certainly, the British Government and other governments have been pressurising israel for months now to let more trucks in. It is just over months now to let more trucks in. It isjust over 100 a months now to let more trucks in. It is just over 100 a day. Before the war, it was over 420 a day, the need clearly now is much greater. That would be the quickest and easiest mechanism, but there is a lot of resistance and very Little Movement from israel on that front. So these very complicated, very intensive efforts are going on instead. Maritime corridors and airdrops. And they are a drop in the ocean in terms of gazas need. Because we keep hearing how dire the situation is in gaza and it gets worse every single day. But it should come as no surprise to anyone. The un has been warning for months that that strangulation of humanitarian aid by truck into gaza would have catastrophic consequences and we seem to seek those consequences coming to realisation now. Quentin, thank ou. Coming to realisation now. Quentin, thank yom our coming to realisation now. Quentin, thank you. Our corresponding coming to realisation now. Quentin, l thank you. Our corresponding Quentin Sommerville in larnaca in cyprus. And on that Point Quentin was talking about, the fact there is a proven far more effective way to get aid into gaza and that is by road. I spoke to Jane Kinninmont who is the policy and impact director at european leadership network. This is new territory, really, for the us to be embarking both on this floating port idea and on the airdrops of aid already being carried out when its trying to access territory where the access is basically controlled by one of its allies. It is a very strange thing. But to kind of look at the bigger picture, one of the core issues for gaza and for the Palestinian Territories is that the palestinians are unable to control their own borders. Theyre unable, also, to have an army because they dont have a state. So, this issue of access into gaza has been kind of festering for a very long time. Its brought into sharp relief now by the looming famine and the extremity of the needs in gaza, but it illustrates what has been one of the sort of fundamental bones of contention. Now, israel pulled its soldiers and its settlements out of gaza nearly 20 years ago, and the Israeli Government say that ended their occupation of gaza, and that they dont therefore have responsibility, really, for the ability of people in gaza to access essentials. Most of the rest of the world believes that israel is still legally occupying gaza and that it has a legal obligation to provide the vital things like food, fuel and electricity or to ensure, at least, that the population there is able to get those things. So theres a big underlying legal and political dispute here which has been going on for many, many years, and isnt being solved quickly. There had been hopes that some kind of humanitarian ceasefire deal could be in place for ramadan, which begins in the next few hours. It is of course the muslim holy month. It is celebrated by muslims around the world. They will be fasting for the next month. Of course, that fast is normally broken at the end of the day by a special meal. But in gaza, people are struggling for any kind of food at all. It will be a very different kind of ramadan for them. And here in eastjerusalem as well where i am, there is always a real focus on the holy sites in the old city ofjerusalem on the third holiest site in islam, the Al Aqsa Mosque, which is also the same complex as the temple mount, the holiest site injudaism. And around this time in previous years, there have been violent clashes around there and we know the Israeli Government have been looking at how they will manage that this time round, particularly given the backdrop of the war in gaza. They have said that they will tighten security. And in the last hour, the israeli Prime Ministers spokesperson said this. Translation spokesperson said this. Tuna mom spokesperson said this. Translation ,. , translation The Entrance Of worshippers translation The Entrance Of worshippers to translation The Entrance Of worshippers to the translation The Entrance Of worshippers to the temple translation The Entrance Of. Worshippers to the temple mount translation The Entrance Of worshippers to the temple mount will be permitted in similar numbers to previous years. I want to say this loud and clear, there is no threat to the holy sites during ramadan. This month and every month, we will allow safe and proper prayers and allow safe and proper prayers and all the holiday customs. We want to safeguard the Public Injerusalem and other places for the entire public. Muslim, jewish and christian. Christian. That is quite an important christian. That is quite an important statement christian. That is quite an important statement because in christian. That is quite an important statement because in the run up to ramadan this year, there have been some of the right wing elements from the Israeli Government like Itamar Ben Gvir the security minister who had been calling on the number of muslims allowed to worship the Al Aqsa Mosque to be drastically reduced and hamas have been urging palestinians to pray that in greater numbers than in previous years and israel had accused hamas of trying to ignite the region by doing that. But the Israeli Government making it very clear the numbers will stay stable and those who want to will be able to worship. But they are also tightening Security Presence around the old city as well. And as the call to prayer starts to ring out here injerusalem, we will keep you up to date with all of the different threats of this story threads of this story here on bbc news. Studio thank you, anna foster, live injerusalem. Live to amsterdam now. Live pictures of the museum being opened, the museum commemorating the holocaust as being opened in amsterdam today and several hundred people have turned out to protest against israels actions in gaza because israels president isaac herzog is attending the opening of that museum. So large crowds of people and a line up of the police and flares and green smoke going over the top of the crowds. This museum will be the first in the netherlands to tell the full story of the persecution ofjewish people during the second world war. A lot of attention today because of the protests taking place, the protest against israels actions in gaza. Her exact condition has never been made public and the team around her have fiercely protected her privacy. Prince william has continued with royal duty without his wife at his side. Flowers and messages wishing her well have become part of every engagement he now does. There is unlikely to be any more detail released about the princesss recovery for now. There has also been a mothers day post on social media from impellers, vote of the king in the late queen, along with a message to those missing their mothers today from Buckingham Palace. Kensington palace will hope the photo of the princess addresses the public curiosity about her and coles wild speculation. We still dont expect to see her back on royal duty until after royal duty after the holidays. And calms wild speculation. A man has been arrested after a car crashed into the gates of Buckingham Palace in the early hours of yesterday morning. Police said armed officers detained the man on suspicion of criminal damage, and he was taken to hospital. A look at the sport. Lets see which way the title race goes later liverpool take on Manchester City at anfield. A win for either will send them top. If its a draw, then arsenal will still lead the premier league. They went top after beating brentford yesterday. Its a tough one to call. Will home advantage be the diference . Am i allowed to say that second to none, is anybody offended by that . Its really good, huh . And energising. Massive. These are the games you want to play, these are the games you want to get to take in the stadium. These are the games, you want to watch. This is a very special game. And, yes, anfield is, for us, a massive, massive factor. It would be a bit embarrassing if i would say today, please help us. People will. The shape they attack is easily a bit different than the previous seasons. The quality of some new players make the game a little bit different. The main patterns are the same, so we know it quite well, like i think they know us. But the reality is you have to adjust the forms, the quality of individual players they have. But at the same time, knowing that, you have to take a look at the games we played recently, the players they played recently. So you have to adjust something, you know, to be more comfortable with the players that we have. Thats the stand out match, but theres also a really important game at villa park, in the battle for a top four finish. Aston villa host tottenham in the early game fourth versus fifth. 15 minutes played, no clear cut chances, it is goalless. Nottingham forest are three points off the relegation zone. They could do with a win at brighton. And burnley will move off the foot of the table if they avoid defeat at west ham. But they will want more than that. The Six Nations Championship will go down to the final weekend. Wales willjust be hoping that they dont pick up the wooden spoon. That they dont pick they face france in cardiff this afternoon, still looking for their first win, and theyve lost their last five at home in the competition. We desperately want to win and we feel well be ok. We want to try and put a complete performance together. There have been parts of our game that weve been really happy with and a number of things that we need to fix up as well. So, we know were on a journey, but were trying to fast track things as quickly as we possibly can. And a win on sunday will be a good Stepping Stone for that. Australian open champion Aryna Sabalenka saved four match points and needed four of her own to earn a three set victory over Payton Stearns at indian wells. The world number two was pushed to the limit in her opening match by the american outsider, whos ranked 6ath. The match became a struggle from the start for sabalenka, who was coming off an opening match loss in dubai in february. She books a third round meeting with 2021 us open champion emma raducanu. Still no goals in the aston villa and spurs game. Aston villa are true and spurs game. Aston villa are true and goals right now and they have just fluffed their lines, he looked offside. Ill be back with an update in the last in the next hour. Studio 0k, thank in the last in the next hour. Studio ok, thank you very much. The shadow chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has played down expectations of a a Rapid Improvement in Public Services if labour wins the next election. In the Budget On Wednesday, the Government Cut National Insurance by 2 pence for the second time in six months, and adopted two of labours fund raising policies. Rachel reeves told the Laura Kuenssberg programme that if they win the election, there would be some extra spending, but labour would not be able to turn things around straight away. It is clear that the inheritance that government have if we do when the next election will be the worst since the second world war. And i have to be honest, that were not going to be able to turn things around straightaway, but we will get to work on all of that. Earlier, i spoke to our political correspondent, pete saull, about what the shadow chancellor said. I think the Budget On Wednesday from the chancellor, jeremy hunt, presented a few challenges to the labour party. Of course, the big headline was the cut to National Insurance by two percentage points, and thats quite an expensive policy. So he came up with various other things to try and raise the money for that, including what was previously a labour idea to reform non dom tax status. And labour said that they were then going to raise the many through that to spend on other things. So the obvious question to Rachel Reeves and Laura Kuenssberg put it to her repeatedly today was, how on earth are you going to raise the money that you are going to potentially then use to spend on other things . And she wasnt able to give a definitive answer, other than saying they would close what she calls a loophole in the windfall tax for gas and oil giants. I suppose its understandable that she wouldnt want to give too much away. We dont quite know when the general election is going to be. It could be as soon as may. Most people i speak to in westminster, though, think it will probably be in october or november. And the dangerfor labour, again, is if they say they are going to do something, conservatives might steal their ideas, like they did in the Budget On Wednesday. Voters in portugal are electing a new parliament today. Sundays Snap Election was called after the socialist Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, resigned over a Corruption Investigation involving some of his staff. Both the Governing Socialists and Opposition Centre right Democratic Alliance are looking to claim a majority. A close result could give the far right chega Party Powerful Sway though the Democratic Alliance leader has ruled out forming a coalition with it. Our reporter alison roberts, whos in lisbon, has more. This Socialist Party is defending its record of eight years in power, the less two of those with a majority of its own empowerment. And although portugals economy last year expanded by more than most in europe, there are a lot of problems. There is a big squeeze on public spending as the government has tried to reduce public debt and that has led to cuts in the Health Service and in education and a wave of strikes which are not over yet. So against that backdrop, the centre right Democratic Alliance have been leading in the polls in recent days. And then of course, thatis recent days. And then of course, that is that issue as you mention of the Prime Minister Antonio Costa resigning because of an Ongoing Investigation into irregularities in government contracts, although he is not a suspect himself, he has bailed out. And that has given ammunition to the far right chega party, which look set to double or possibly even triple its vote of 7 less time in 2022 and claiming that it is the Champion Fighting against government corruption. However, the centre right Democratic Alliance says it will not play ball. Its leader has said no is no, it will not align itself with him. Not particularly springlike for many areas so far, through the week and will perhaps start to feel more like spring. Temperatures climbing, but still some rain at times. Rain for the rest of the day, moving slowly north and west across england and north wales, some Rain Into Southern Scotland and Northern Ireland, patchy rain in the north of scotland. Eastern scotland quite chilly, 5 6, sunshine from the south, wales, up to 12. This evening, we keep extensive cloud covered, but rain easing, some drizzle, more widespread rain for a time in Northern Ireland. Clear spells could fill in with areas of mist and fog. Heading into tomorrow, many of us find ourselves between different Weather Systems, but this one here brings more cloud and some rain towards parts of Northern Ireland, grazing the west of scotland. And the area of low pressure to the south east may bring some rain to east anglia and south eastern england. In between, large amounts of cloud, some bright sunny spells, the best of those from wales and the south west, six or seven in the north east of scotland. And into tuesday, the Weather System could bring rain across the southern half of the uk and then we see the next system from the west feeding rain across Northern Ireland and western parts of wales and into scotland later. Limited sunny spells, but temperatures will start to climb, and that is a sign of things to come. Moving through the middle of the week, various Weather Systems wriggling around. And eventually, as they shift north, they will introduce warmer air which reaches just about all the country by the end of the week, something colder trying to cling on in the far north. But for most of us into the weekend, it will bring higher temperatures, but that doesnt mean blue skies and sunshine all the time, still rain.
