—— what can you tell us. it is about this unfolding situation? -- what can you tell us. it is supposed to be four o'clock _ what can you tell us. it is supposed to be four o'clock in _ what can you tell us. it is supposed to be four o'clock in the _ what can you tell us. it is supposed to be four o'clock in the afternoon i to be four o'clock in the afternoon at the handover should take place from hamas to the red cross in gaza. now, that hour came and went four hours ago with no news and then it became apparent that there was this delay. at this point yesterday, you will remember, we were well into talking about the pictures of israeli hostages passing over the rafah crossing into egypt, on their way into southern israel and then on to hospital so clearly we are way behind that today. apparently, without even the handover from hamas to the red cross and you are there from that briefing from that statement that was made in beirut, and a senior hamas official telling the bbc that they claim it is the israeli side that has caused the problem and they are alleging that it is because there was not that entry of enough aid trucks and to the north of gaza and also claiming the north of gaza and also claiming the israelis had changed the list of palestinian prisoners in a way that they were unhappy with, those due to be released. so they are the key issues that they are saying that our behind the delay of their release. the israelis are denying this. they're not making any further comment at the moment. but certainly qatar, which has mediated all of this, is currently involved in ongoing talks to try to resolve it. that has been confirmed to me by diplomatic officials who say that the tories are engaged with both sides and trying to resolve this delay. —— the qatari delegates. people might well wonder, tom, exactly what is going on because it was just a few moments ago that egypt was saying that they were giving positive noises about an extension to this four—day truth and then within about an hour, we heard about this delay. it can be difficult to follow this process at times, can't it?— difficult to follow this process at times, can't it? well, yeah, that was quite _ times, can't it? well, yeah, that was quite bizarre, _ times, can't it? well, yeah, that was quite bizarre, really. - times, can't it? well, yeah, that i was quite bizarre, really. because, in the middle of this process, really, almost among the time we were expecting hostages to be released today we had the egyptians by the state information service saying that they were getting positive signals from the two sides as part of intensive discussions about extending the four—day period to, the four—day period of the truce by a day or two. it was always built—in, so—called option to extend by five days to get the release of more hostages and the release of more hostages and the release of more palestinian prisoners held by israel. and suddenly we were hearing the egyptians talking about this at that particular point. a diplomatic source also telling the bbc at that point that the qatari delegation that i mentioned was on the ground and is real and that was part of the discussions. so it may well be that these things are linked because, of course, there is pressure being applied from all sides, notjust to ensure the daily release of hostages but, as far as the arab countries are concerned, they want to try to see this temporary ceasefire extend into something more durable. they believe that this creates the basis for a longer term ceasefire. the israelis have been absolutely adamant throughout. we've heard benjamin netanyahu, the prime minister, saying that when the current ceasefire ends and has served its purpose to hostages out, they say the war will go on.- they say the war will go on. tom, thank you- _ they say the war will go on. tom, thank you. tom _ they say the war will go on. tom, thank you. tom. _ it was a total of 39 people made up of 2a women and 15 teenage boys release to palestinian officials in the occupied west bank from the prison. the majority of them are being held in pre—trial detention. theirfreedom being held in pre—trial detention. their freedom was greeted with celebrations among palestinian communities. these pictures were found late yesterday evening. you can see crowds waving the palestinian flag and you can see those solid green flags been wavered and those are the flags of hamas that are being waived during the celebrations and this is one of the palestinian women who was released from israeli detention yesterday. this is what she had to say. the israelis came _ this is what she had to say. the israelis came at _ this is what she had to say. the israelis came at ten _ this is what she had to say. tue: israelis came at ten in this is what she had to say. tta: israelis came at ten in the this is what she had to say. tt2 israelis came at ten in the morning and told us that there was a deal. we were suffering from difficult circumstances and tear gas was fired at us. we were wearing head covers all the time. the situation was humiliating and included psychological torture in addition to cutting of the electricity for the prisoners. we were suffering from the cold without the electricity and no one helped ours. only hamas cared. those who felt our suffering, i thank them very much and we love them very much. i thank them very much and we love them very much-— i thank them very much and we love them very much. well, as a delay to them very much. well, as a delay to the hostage — them very much. well, as a delay to the hostage release _ them very much. well, as a delay to the hostage release continues, - the hostage release continues, nobody knows whether it will be a delay which is short or long but we'll keep you up—to—date on bbc news. let's go and get the rest of today's stories. the metropolitan police say that two people have been arrested for supporting a proscribed organisation and that four others have been arrested for inciting racial... have been taking place every saturday. before the start of the demonstration police handed out leaflets warning against the use of words or images that could break the law. let's take a closer look at the diplomacy of the truce. let's speak to our guest who is a director of the middle east institute at a university in london. thank you so much forjoining us. i want to get your view on the power that qatar, as well as egypt, who have spoken now and said that they are working on repairing this delay, what power do these mediators have in these negotiations?— do these mediators have in these neuotiations? ~ , ., ., , negotiations? well, these mediators obviously help _ negotiations? well, these mediators obviously help close _ negotiations? well, these mediators obviously help close relationships . obviously help close relationships with hamas. the political leader of hamas resides in qatar and egypt also has connections with hamas, some of the other leadership and there are deploying all those connections to make sure this deal happens. there is a lot at stake for them politically, for their own credibility, especially for qatar because it has had this relationship for hamas for a very long time and it will want to show the international community that there is value in maintaining lines of communication with hamas open. and therefore, they have been... a company delegation has been reported and have arrived in israel to talk to the israeli side so i don't think tonight will pass without these diplomatic efforts being set up. i'd make the bbc has heard that a qatari delegation is in israel as well. as for hamas, what calculation are they making here? because the stability of this truce is important for them as well? well, the stability of the truce is not really the ultimate issue here, to be honest. the ultimate issue for hamas is to be seen as having leveraged over israel. we have to remember that the release of the hostages and vice versa, the release of the detainees by israel is notjust about the humanitarian side of the story. this is also a political move. and in a very harrowing way, human beings are used as political bargaining chips when you have hostages taken and you have detainees on the other side, each side will want to extract as many political benefits as possible from their release. and so, unfortunately, we have a situation in which hamas is looking at the bigger picture, not of the humanitarian pause. and the exchange of the detainees and hostages. and thatis of the detainees and hostages. and that is why i believe it has accused israel of breaking the terms of the deal and israel, of course, israel of breaking the terms of the dealand israel, of course, is denying that but i don't think the issueis denying that but i don't think the issue is those details as much as it issue is those details as much as it is about political posturing. tt is about political posturing. if there is not this a priority, there is concern about the humanitarian situation on hamas's part, what you make of the likelihood that this truce could be extended given we are hearing reports that is what qatar is pushing for right now? t hearing reports that is what qatar is pushing for right now?- hearing reports that is what qatar is pushing for right now? i mean, it is pushing for right now? i mean, it is anyone's — is pushing for right now?
