in a prisoner of war camp. i never slept in a bed for two and a half years, because they had no beds. we all slept ten in a little room — ten each, head to toe. if somebody wanted to turn over in their sleep, somebody used to say "turn" and everybody used to turn over in one go, like, you know. it was amazing. kept in terrible conditions, but he was lucky to live. many of his friends died when they were moved to another camp upriver. they were fired on by american aeroplanes, thinking that we were chinese. and we lost a lot of people. there were also pows. they were killed by friendly fire, as they call it. do you want to look at the picture? have a quick look. all right, there you go. sat in your front lounge. 0h. yeah? what do you reckon? well, the thing is about these guys, they're had along the way painting these guys. it is priceless. and even even the richest man - on the planet, even your bill gates couldn't buy the experience i've had painting these guys and being - around these people. it's just been _ absolutely unbelievable. we were very lucky — we got out of it. a lot of lads didn't come back. we don't forget. but a lot of people do. and it's good — it's very, very good that we have a remembrance day every year. i don't think we'd be the same without it. as they were freed from the camps, they sang. come on, lads, all together. # it's a long way to tipperary. # news. the north west has some of the busiest motorways in the country. there were more than 1,500 accidents on the m62 alone last year. police and traffic officers recently mounted another operation to crackdown on drivers who aren't paying attention. judy hobson went out on patrol with them. the m6 in cheshire, and police are on the lookout for dangerous driving. police. put your cup of tea... the police! you might want to put your cup of tea down and concentrate on driving. this driver is notjust drinking tea, he also takes both hands off the wheel. he is one of hundreds of drivers caught breaking the law during a one—week police operation last year. and this is how they are being caught. police are using the unmarked lorry cab so they can see exactly what drivers are doing. we had years of not being able to see inside them, and the only way that you could check what a driver was up to was by pulling them over. well, by that point, the driver has either put the mobile phone down or they have shut their laptop, they've come off social media. this actually gives us an opportunity to catch them in the act. fortunately, this driver is doing nothing wrong. sometimes, you know, 44 tonnes of metal driving down the motorway, 56 miles an hour and watching a dvd. people do these things quite - regularly, and because they don't have any collisions or they are not caught, they then _ think that it is safe. unfortunately, that i risk does not reduce. i've seen it all to be honest. nothing shocks me. you know, reading a book, and these people are actually travelling alongside me, you and your families. and it is unacceptable that five people a day die on uk roads. the aim of operations like this is to halve the number of deaths on our roads by 2025. and to encourage drivers not to take risks. judy hobson, bbc north west today. hundreds of thousands of women in england are to be offered a drug which could substantially reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. trials have shown that anastrozole, a hormone therapy used to treat the disease, can also prevent cases. the charity breast cancer now has described it as a major step forward. we spoke earlier to professor peterjohnson, nhs england's national clinical directorfor cancer. we've known for some time that if you block the female hormone on people who have gone past the menopause but who are at risk of developing breast cancer that you can reduce their cancer chances of doing so. we can identify whether other people and their family have had breast cancer, a group of people who are at risk. it is roundabout hr 9% around a five year period. by giving them something to block the female hormone we can reduce that risk by half to about 4% to 5%. anastrozole is a drug that we have used for some time with this, but there are some side effects, people had been worried about blood clots. anastrozole stops the oestrogen hormone, and that works better than the other treatment were used to use. we have not had a license to use. we have not had a license to use it for the prevention of breast cancer and the drug of patents now and it is made by multiple manufacturers in the course of come down hugely. we have repurposed the drug from a treatment or prevention. if you look at people who have gone through the menopause and to have a heightened risk of developing cancer, that is about 290,000 women between the ages of 50—69, when breast cancer is the most common. if only around a quarter of them agreed to take the treatment, we think that could save around 2,000 cases of breast cancer per year, so very important. it isn't for everybody, it doesn't have side effects that the menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, but we hope to be able to reduce the risk of side—effects in long term. reduce the risk of side—effects in long term. campaigners say they'll continue to fight to protect more than a 140 trees due to be felled to make way for new homes in south shields despite some concessions from the developer. more than 3,000 people signed an online petition opposed to the loss of the trees at the town's south tyneside college. avant homes, which plans to build 260 properties on the site, has reduced the number of trees to be chopped down by 13. adam powell reports. a small victory, but a victory nonetheless. 13 trees saved from the chainsaw. they include this 80 year old beech tree, which has come to symbolize the campaign. absolutely overjoyed that we've managed to save this beautiful beech and all the trees along grosvenor road. just fantastic. but the petition is going to continue because we didn't just set out to save these trees down here. we set out to save all the trees on the college site. the government's five year plan is to build a million new homes in england by the end of this parliament. but with the uk one of the world's most nature depleted countries, there's concern projects like this will make the situation even worse. the bats in the area, they're going to be adversely affected. you know, there's 107 different bird species on the site as well. there's red listed, amber listed birds. you've got two mammal species on the site as well. so they're going to all be negatively affected because they hunt and they feed and live on the site. plans are for south tyneside college to move into south shields town centre in a new purpose built building. its current site will make way for 260 new homes, with the loss of more than 140 trees. doris 0smond says the view from her home will change forever and not for the better. yes, we do need homes, but not as many as 260 homes. surely they can build round the trees and keep all the wildlife that the trees support and support all the houses as well. but surely they can compromise, but haven't. they want to cram as many houses on this area as possible. _ avant home's application to build 260 homes will be heard by the end of the year. in a statement, the developer said, campaigners say that's a start, but not enough. the fight to save more trees goes on. adam powell, bbc look. north south shields. now it's time for a look at the weather with helen. hello. sunny spells with a scattering of showers is the story for the rest of daylight today. they will tend to ease down, the showers, ahead of this next wall of cloud. that's our next weather front, which will bring all parts some fairly soggy weather as we go through the night and first on wednesday. not just rain, though. you can see the tightly packed isobars as it goes through — we'll have some windy weather. but for the meantime, some good spells of sunshine out there. it's feeling a little on the chilly side. clusters of showers running down through the north—west of england into the cheshire plains. the odd one elsewhere, of course, in the west, but tending to ease down. temperatures around 12 or 13. through this evening and overnight, initially temperatures dip away, with a touch of frost in the north—east, but no such likes in the west because that rain moves through northern ireland, across into the western side of scotland, england and wales, so temperatures will recover here. we are looking at potentially 20 to 30 millimetres of rain, with a strong, possibly gale force, wind around some coastal areas just for an hour or two as this weather front moves through. just dragging its heels to clear across southern and eastern areas tomorrow, but for most, it's a tale of two halves. that wet weather in the morning across the mainland, not for northern ireland, and then blustery showers following on behind, with temperatures just a degree or so down on those of today. it's starting to turn a bit more wintry over the tops of the mountains. of concern is another inch or so of rain. that could lead to an increase again in the flood warnings, which we still have a cluster of already. that weather system does move away by thursday and then this next area of low pressure closes in. so tightly packed isobars again bringing some windy weather, particularly to the south, so the showers will whisk through here, perhaps more slow moving further north, but with hail, thunder, heavier showers, as well, those gusty winds. it's a little cooler, the air, so we'll see some winteriness over the tops of the scottish mountains in particular. friday, very similarly so because our area of low pressure meanders, we think, further southwards and eastwards, just pulling the heavier showers with it. they do tend to ease later in the west as a ridge of high pressure builds, which for the weekend means that we could have quite a lot of dry weather. notice the chill on friday, but come the weekend quite a lot of dry weather. we've got some uncertainty over sunday as to how quickly the rain comes in, but, as ever, we'll keep you posted. live from london, this is bbc news. the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, outlines his plans for the gaza strip, saying israel will take
