Killed in the strip. The un is warning that the last remaining services are collapsing due to a lack of supplies, as israel continues its siege and bombardment. Hundreds of Armed Police Officers continue to hunt for a gunman in the us state of maine, after 18 people were shot dead yesterday. The suspect, robert card, is an Army Reservist and is considered dangerous. Lets ta ke lets take lets update you on what is happening in gaza. A new figure from the hamas run Health Authorities in gaza saying that the death toll is now 7326. With hospitals in the gaza strip either shut or unable to provide medical help, pregnant women are being forced to give birth in dangerous conditions. One of them a journalist Called Jumana Has made a video diary of her experiences. Shes been speaking to bbc arabic s dalia haider. They speak arabic a precious moment captured between a pregnant mother and daughter. Translation im about to deliver any time soon. I hope my second baby arrives safely and peacefully, but apparently, she will come within a destruction. As israel carried out air strikes, we asked jumana, a journalist from gaza city, to record a video diary in the lead up to giving birth. What scares me the most, what i think about every night as i fall asleep, is that we may not wake up. Two days after the conflict started, jumana evacuated with her four year old daughter and moved in with relatives further south, where they thought it was safer. I moved to another home. This is all the stuff i was able to take, this small bag and these things. Like the 2 million palestinians in gaza struggling with food and water shortages, jumana and herfamily are often cut off from the outside world. We dont have electricity, so we cant watch the news on the television. Theres no internet. The radio is all we have if our phones dont die. Jumanas husband was away working. She feared for his life as he tried to bring more clothes for their newborn and a hospital bag. I hope he is safe because there are warnings about intensive strikes near us. I hope to god to bring him safely back to me. Im so scared. We tried to stay in daily contact with jumana, despite the frequent disconnection of phone lines and internet. Are you ok . , i ask her. Two days later, she replies, yes, thank god, but honestly the situation is difficult. She told me there was intense bombing. Pray for us to be alive tomorrow. Jumana is one of 5,500 women in gaza who, according to the un, are expected to give birth within the next month. The un says they face huge challenges to access Safe Delivery services, with overcrowded hospitals and a shortage in medicine. My labour has begun, but the problem is, will i find someone to Take Me To The Hospital . Jumana made it. But while she waited, a house near the hospital was bombed. In a few seconds, everything in the hospital was turned upside down. There were people wounded. People were screaming everywhere. She told me all she was thinking about was delivering her daughter, no matter what. Hours later, talia was born. Do you love her . Jumana brought her newborn back home, but every night, the fear home, but every night, they fear they wont live to see another day. Dalia haider, bbc news. All of that worry, but what a beautiful picture of that brand new baby girl who they will desperately be hoping they can keep safe in gaza right now. Baby talia and her mum, we appreciate hearing that story and perhaps a bit of hope in what is a horrific situation in gaza with that new figure of over 7,000 People Killed and the un saying 40 of those killed in gaza are children. It is really difficult to distribute aid in gaza. We have been focusing on that today, with the un talking about the difficulties they have got particularly with fuel. One group who have been part of the aid effort are the gaza sunbirds. Theyre a group that supports para athletes in gaza. But since the conflict began, they have been collecting food and medicine and delivering it to Vulnerable People on their bikes. With me is karim ali, the uk based co founder of the gaza sunbirds. He has been in close contact with his team of 20 athletes and four support staff in gaza. Really good to see you. How are they, how is your team . Really good to see you. For starters, the situation with the l for starters, the situation with the team is super difficult. Gaza has been under siege now for more than 20 years and the situation there wasnt much better before this started. They still had limited access to water, they still had limited access to food, limited access to electricity. People were struggling every day. They would describe every single day as hell. They would say, i am choking, i am struggling, i cannot breathe. This is what the Israeli Occupation is done to them for years, they are not allowed to see their families on the other side of the wall, they are not allowed to leave to get medical attention. Now they are saying the situation is worse than hell. Situation is worse than hell. Worse than hell. They situation is worse than hell. Worse than hell. They feel situation is worse than hell. Four days into the siege, four years into the genocide, sorry, my team is already struggling to find food. My athletes called to say, we havent eaten or had water in days. We have 20 athletes and all 20 athletes were amputated due to aggressions from the Israeli Occupation. What does that look like . Our main founder was shot in the leg during the great march, along with another 150 palestinians on the day that had to get amputated, 32,000 were shot. He had to get his leg amputated, he was a professional cyclist, he decided he wanted to become a cyclist and bring other amputees in gaza under that kind of platform to get back, to claim their sovereignty and Self Determination as people and stop being victims and try to change the narrative in gaza and tell their stories. The story of the sunbirds has a ways been a story of hope, these are the people that have been most affected by the brutality of the Israeli Occupation, they have had their legs blown off. My group is para athletes, we are amputees and cyclists. And in the desperation of the moment that we find ourselves in today, they are trying their best and risking their lives going out to get supplies from the remaining supermarkets in gaza and to distribute them to people. It is insane. The supermarkets we bought food from two days ago, it got bombed. The bakery we were going to get bread from got bombed. The car we were using to take aid people got bombed. The government says its making £276 million available this academic year, which universities can use to top up their own hardship schemes, on top of increases to Student Loans and grants. The University Of Exeter told us it aims to keep Student Rents as low as possible and says it offers Additional Support to those who need it. The Department For Education says the Student Loan System prioritises support for people from the lowest income families. But from speaking to people here today, it certainly seems that more and more students are struggling to make ends meet. For more stories from across the uk, head to the bbc news website. Youre live with bbc news. We will keep your across all developments in israel and gaza. But here in the uk, a story many people are talking about today is the ban on xl bully dogs. Another Breed The Pitbull has already been banned in the uk for more than 30 years. But new Research Shows that thousands of pitbulls are still registered to live here, through exemption rules. Our correspondent danny savage has this report. An xl Bully Type Dog with a temperament problem. This animal was handed to police after it attacked its owner. It can never be rehomed and will be put down. This is currently a perfectly legal dog type, but the government is planning to ban them soon, following a number of attacks and fatalities. Im a dog lover. I dont want to see dogs put down, but im also a dad. And ive got to think about public safety, you know . And is it right that a dog that has done that to someone, who is strong themselves, physically capable, is it right that that dog is then rehomed . Come on, then. This much better behaved dog is actually a banned type. It can live with its owner, but has to comply with strict rules, like wearing a muzzle in public. Whats this is it a muzzle . Lola is defined by the authorities as a pit bull type dog. Are you ready . Her owner was unaware she fell into a banned category and had to go to court after Police Seized her. Shejumped up in the back of the van. All they locked her in a cage, shut the door and drove off, leaving me sobbing in the road. And i didnt know whether i was ever going to see her again. Shes got to be on lead in every public place and muzzled, which includes our own car. She doesnt believe Banning A Type solves the problem of controlling dangerous dogs. Banning a breed to start with makes them more attractive to the wrong owner. And its these people that the government should be targeting, not innocent family dogs that have been well brought up, trained, from loving families. There willjust be another breed of dog that theyre attracted to. The bbc has found that 3,499 animals are on the index of exempted dogs, meaning they can still live with their owners, and 99 of them are pit bulls like lola. Good girl. This is usually because owners have successfully argued they are responsible and can keep their dogs safely. Whats this . Its the police who assess a dog to see if it falls into a banned category. So were going here. Were looking about. Looks and measurements are basically what it boils down to. So weve got quite a square dog. This is a pit bull. Also here is another xl bully. No one knows how many are out there. Give us a bit of room because shes a bit uncomfortable, arent you, darling . But many of them could be allowed to still live with their owners if they are banned. We will look at the Home Environment that dogs are kept in. We will speak to the dog owner. Well obviously look at research into them and whether theyre a fit and proper person. So, if that dog is exempted, you know, that person will apply the sort of restrictions thats been put upon it. Hey good boy. Some owners are taking the initiative and getting their xl bullys ready to be assessed, like zuma here. Hes a dead playful dog. He loves people and loves other dogs. He loves to play. Hes a family pet, who the owners completely trust with their children. Just sprinkle a few and itll take him a while to find it. So his owners are paying for professional dog training, in case of future restrictions. They hope to be able to legally keep him, having already noticed other peoples reactions. People are a bit more wary about him now. The dont want their dogs to come close to him, they dont want their children close to him. They even dont want their self close to him. If hes ever off the lead, theyll start walking the opposite direction. Hes a good boy. And id be really sad if he was ever taken away or anything like that. It would be awful, really. Good lad. A ban doesnt necessarily mean these dogs will disappear, but it should clamp down on irresponsible owners. Danny savage, bbc news. Its exactly one year since elon musk bought twitter now known as x and the social Media Company has rapidly changed since he took over. The company now employs thousands fewer people, but he says he wants his remaining staff to think big about the future. Our north America Technology reporter, james clayton, has the latest. A year ago, elon musk famously, infamously, walked into Twitter Holding a sink. Let that sink in, he quipped, before firing huge swathes of its staff. 30 seconds left. 35 seconds. Everybody here . Were all about to get fired. It was emblematic of his erratic leadership. He slept in the office, changed twitter s name to x, talked about fighting mark zuckerberg, who launched a rival to twitter, called threads, over the summer. I got a taste of that unpredictability when i messaged him to ask him for an interview six months ago. A few hours later, he was telling me hed appointed his dog to run twitter. Im not the ceo of twitter. My dog is the ceo of twitter. 0k. But although some have left the platform, it has been remarkably resilient. A year on, x, formerly known as twitter, still exists. Threads, Mark Zuckerbergs rival, has not been the twitter killer that some have touted it to be, but it still has major problems. Despite what elon musk says, independent analysts say that twitter s user numbers are falling. X has put out different numbers, saying that things are going great there must be something going on that were not seeing. But basically, everything is down on a year over year basis. Advertisers have also shunned the platform and the eu has criticised it for high levels of disinformation. He hired former advertising exec Linda Yaccarino over the summer to try to bring them back. Many of you in this room know me and you know i pride myself on my work ethic. But, buddy, i met my match. But some investors say advertisers wont come back until the platform is better moderated. I think that twitter is dying. I think its just dying right now. And i dont think twitter users like me want it to die because its become such a valuable resource for me. But. But its dying. So i dont care what elon says. It doesnt matter what he says. Theres a reality and theres a fantasy. The fantasy that ross garber is referring to is mr musk s big dreams for x. This is what he told me he wants x to become. If twitter s an accelerant to x. What does that, what does that mean . What does it mean . Well, i guess youll have to stay tuned to find out. Ah, come on. We now know a little bit more. He wants x to do streaming games, video calls, banking, you name it the everything app. That was embarrassing almost died. But ultimately, x still gets the vast majority of its revenue through advertising. If its going to survive in the short term, at least, it needs to bring them back. James clayton, bbc news, san francisco. Some very good news now. The first ever vaccine approved to treat malaria has been analysed by the who not from its performance in trials, but in the real world, and it cuts deaths from malaria among children by 13 . Given that malaria kills 460,000 children a year, mostly in africa, that is tens of thousands of lives saved. We have been waiting for this for a long time. I | waiting for this for a long time. I have been working on malaria for many years, several decades, really. And it has been a huge task involving many, many people in different countries, our african colleagues that worked so hard on this. And at last, we do have a vaccine, it is not a perfect vaccine, it is not a perfect vaccine, and we have two now, so that really is a game changer. I guess you will be hoping now to improve on that 30 reduction. Yes. Improve on that 30 reduction. Yes, i think improve on that 3096 reduction. Yes, i think as improve on that 3096 reduction. Yes, i think as you improve on that 3096 reduction. Yes, i think as you mentioned, improve on that 30 reduction. Yes i think as you mentioned, that means saving the lives of many thousands of african children. But it is not a perfect vaccine and one of the things weve had to try to do is to improve the vaccine and there is work going on in that. But the other way of making the most of this is combining the vaccine with use of insecticide treated nets to stop people getting bitten by the mosquitoes and also with drugs. And thatis mosquitoes and also with drugs. And that is proving to be a very successful combination. Especially in the countries where there is just malaria for a few months in the year and then you can give the drugs and and then you can give the drugs and a booster dose of the vaccine. And there will be more work in other parts of the world finding out how best we can use these vaccines. Professor greenwood, what about the cost of this vaccine, particularly for people in africa . That cost of this vaccine, particularly for people in africa . For people in africa . That is a really key for people in africa . That is a really key point. For people in africa . Vaccine made by gsk, which is the first one, it was the pilot and it paved the way in many ways for the r 21, but gsk cant make that in very large amounts at the moment and it is probably a bit more expensive than the r21 vaccine. And we know that thatis the r21 vaccine. And we know that that is a cost of about 3 and has been seen suggested for the r21 vaccine which would be Cost Effective compared to the other things we used to control malaria. Can i also ask you just because we are short of time, you are one of the lead contributors here, but how closely have you worked with other scientists and doctors in africa . That has been a key thing. I lived in west africa for 30 years. And that has been one of the exciting thing is really about the Vaccine Programme over this period. It is to see the increasing role that the african scientists have done and the donors and gsk have been very good at supporting them. As we also keep an eye on gaza, the death toll is now 7326 people have been killed according to the Health Ministry in gaza. Hello. Good afternoon. Some very autumnal scenes earlier on this morning, particularly across northern and eastern areas of england with some patches of mist and fog, such as here in sheffield. Its now largely lifted and cleared. It wont be quite so much of a problem overnight tonight or indeed for the next few days because the winds are set to pick up. Therell also be some more heavy downpours of rain, generally staying very unsettled. And if we take a look at the rainfall accumulation chart, through the weekend and into monday, you can see the area of most concern again is eastern scotland, with another 50 to 100 millimetres of rain, especially over the higher ground. Of course, all of this falling on already saturated ground. That rain just feeding through in a constant stream of showers on the south easterly wind for the rest of today. Also some heavy, frequent, even thundery showers across eastern areas of Northern Ireland could possibly cause some issues here. Some showers further south, but also some more sunshine developing from the south by the end of the day. Top temperatures 10 to 15 degrees celsius, a little lower than they were yesterday for most. Overnight tonight, again, weve got this constant feed of showers into eastern areas of scotland. Still some more showers across Northern Ireland. Well start to see heavy, more persistent showers start to approach the south coast of england where, also, the winds are set to pick up into tomorrow morning. Its mild and its frost free as we begin the weekend. Now, we look towards the south coast on saturday morning. Again, some heavy, thundery showers always likely. Some strong, gusty winds of around 50 miles an hour, perhaps, in places. Windy, too, across the north of scotland. The rain continues towards the east. Heavy, persistent rain approaching the South West Of England and wales by the time we get to the end of the day on saturday. Some of that rain likely to be very heavy across south east england, too. Another sign of autumn, the clocks due to go back by one hour on saturday night into sunday. Now, as we head through saturday evening, then that rain will gradually push its way further northwards across to southern scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland. This is how well begin sunday morning. Some showers feeding in towards the south, but also some sunshine. Blustery conditions. That rain perhaps moving further northwards, as we head through the day on sunday.
