His was a career built on achieving the seemingly impossible, a survivor of the munich air disaster, he won the world cup with england in 1966, as well as League Titles and the european cup with Manchester United, who today called him one of the most beloved players in the history of the club. Looking back at his extraordinary life and achievements, our Sports Correspondent joe wilson reports. Maybe a shot from charlton. Its worth trying. Goal you will know him by his goals. Charlton trying to get the shot away on his right foot oh, you beauty 49 for england, 249 for Manchester United. Sir Bobby Charltons record stood for decades, one legacy of a truly remarkable career. Born in northumberland, charlton was a schoolboy england international. In 1954, the pivotal decision he joined Manchester United. Charlton scores a beauty, they have equalised. In 1958, the munich air crash left 23 people dead, including eight united players. Charlton was on board. He suffered minor injuries. I would like to say a few words to my mother. I hope shes 0k. And taking it well. That experience shaped his life. It is unbelievable really that Something Like that should happen, all your pals get killed, and you are there with hardly a scratch on you. Sometimes, it doesnt seem right. United rebuilt their team, with charlton the foundation, the inspiration. Charlton headed it home and in 1968, his goals against benfica took united to the top, the european cup. How they cheered as Bobby Charlton led his men up to receive the handsome, outsized trophy. In a decade, from munich to this moment. If that was the pinnacle of his club career, for england, there was more. There was 1966. Charlton has scored his goals, including two in the semifinal against portugal, were key to englands world cup. Back to charlton, this could be it it is and that could be the goal that puts england in the final. And charltons reputation was secured. In 1970, charlton made his 100th England appearance, in typical style. And charlton gets the goal still, his career had to end. In 1973, he played his last game for Manchester United. He later became a director during the decades of success under sir alex ferguson. That was just part of charltons later life. He helped charities and sporting projects, including londons olympic bid. He received a knighthood and many other accolades. His relationship with brother jack was often strained, but there was jack to present bobby with the bbc Lifetime Achievement award. I was fortunate enough to be good at the game. I found football was easy. I could never understand it when people couldnt play this game of football. And ive achieved almost everything that i set out to do, but along the way, i had to do it with a lot of really, really good friends. The sentiments of a man known for his integrity, just as much as his sporting ability. The man and the goals and the memories. Theyjust dont come any better than that. Sir Bobby Charlton was a man and a player who inspired a generation, not only those who loved to watch the game, but those who went on to play it too. Since 4 oclock this afternoon, the tributes have kept coming. These are just some of them. His fellow world cup winner sir geoff hurst said, a great colleague and friend, he will be sorely missed by all of the country beyond sport alone. Former england captain gary lineker said, he may no longer be with us, but hell have footballing immortality. World football governing body fifa said, we mourn the loss of one of englands 1966 World Cup Winning Team and a football legend. Former Manchester United captain gary neville called sir bobby The Greatest English Footballer and Manchester Uniteds greatest ambassador. And Newcastle United wrote that he was an Ashington Lad and it was the passing of a true legend of the game. As you can tell, sir bobbys loss will be felt by all in football, but perhaps nowhere more so than at the club that was woven into his heart Manchester United. Ben croucher is there for us. From 0ld from old trafford. Very sombre mood here at old trafford, as you might imagine. Weve been here for the last couple of hours and fans behind us have been arriving steadily to pay tribute and lay flowers at the trinity statue that commemorates the careers of george best, denis law and sir Bobby Charlton, that formidable trio for Manchester United in the 1960s and 70s. Now, the club have also paid tributes. He was a player and a man who embodied everything that Manchester United stood for and his legacy continues. Many of the fans that we spoke to earlier at old trafford were too young to see him play, but his death has really struck a chord with those fans, young and old. 0ver over the years, he has been there. He 0ver the years, he has been there. He has over the years, he has been there. He hasjust over the years, he has been there. He hasjust been there for us all the time he comes to every game. Yeah, sorry, imjust speechless. I thought id come and show my tributes, show i love the club, i show i love all hes done for us because he is united. 1966 world cup for england as well, as an englishman, | i thought it would be appropriate i show my respects. He was the heart and soul, and a big part s gone. Were hearing from understandably emotional manchester fans. And no doubt, there will be some emotional scenes later this evening as well, with united playing at bramall lane. Yes, they are in action at 8pm in the Premier League. Against sheffield united, away from home. The players and staff will wear Black Armbands and a minutes silence will be held to remember the life of sir Bobby Charlton. Theres much more reaction and more tributes to sir Bobby Charlton on the bbc sport website. Manchester uniteds game at bramall lane tonight follows eight other matches played in the Premier League today. Let me now bring you up to date with them, starting with the Merseyside Derby at anfield, which was the early kick off. Karthi gnanasegaram was watching. To most on merseyside, the derby means everything, and a run of results that includes just one defeat for liverpool in 27 meetings with everton, everton knew it would be backs to the wall to throw everything at liverpool. Ashley young was in the right place at the right time, and then he was late. He saw yellow, and before the first half was even up, late again and off for an early bath. Despite a numerical advantage, liverpool struggled to dent the number that mattered most. That they stayed with 11 on the field seemed to perplex a few inside anfield, not least, the everton manager. But for clear cut chances, well, you could count them on one hand. Michael keane stuck his out inside the penalty area, which usually means one thing. Its a penalty. Which means mo salah doing what he does best. Salah scores, clinical one that maybe means more than most. So one more wont hurt either, well, not the red half of the city anyway. Just another three points, as is so often the case at anfield. For everton, more merseyside blues. Relief for the liverpool players in the end. So liverpools goals came in the end and jurgen klopp could understand why some of the supporters were feeling frustrated. We have to make sure that we try absolutely everything to win a game and that means for that, you have to play until the final whistle. Thats what we do so, no, i am not frustrated. But i get it, if im in the crowd, i would be thinking as well, oh, my god, pass the ball there, pass the ball there. But when youre in the driving seat, its slightly more difficult. Arsenal would have gone top of the Premier League if theyd beaten chelsea at Stamford Bridge this evening. It has finished 2 2. Mauricio pochetinnos side went ahead through a cole palmer penalty before Mykhailo Mudryk caught Out David Raya to make it 2 nil. Chelsea looking in total control. But not great goalkeeping. So a goal for declan rice. He couldnt believe his luck. And arsenal found an equaliser. Leandro trossa rd. Having lost two league games in a row, Manchester City are back to winning ways after beating brighton 2 1 at the etihad stadium. Pep guardiolas side got off to a flying start thanks to first half goals from Julian Alvarez and erling haaland, who ended his run of three games without a goal. Ansu fati pulled one back for brighton with around 20 minutes to go. City defender Manuel Akanji was sent off deep into time added on and will now miss the derby against Manchester United a week tomorrow. We make a really good first half, i didnt expect it, a great compliment for the team. We scored two goals, we could have scored maybe in the final pass a little bit more. We then concede almost nothing first half against the team who scored more goals in the Premier League. It means a lot to us. But at the end, obviously, you have to suffer against brighton. But, yes, we managed it and we broke the two defeats in a row. Newcastle united are up to fifth place with a a nil victory over crystal palace. First half goals from jacob murphy here, Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff were added to by Callum Wilson just past the hour as newcastle dominated the game. The result makes it five straight home wins for them, palace, meanwhile, drop to 11th in the table. In the first half, i thought we were really clinical. Some really nice passages of play. I thought we created some good crossing opportunities, some good goal scoring opportunities. That second half was a case ofjust managing the game and making sure we kept players fit and fresh for whats ahead. But delighted with the attitude of the players. Luton town came from two goals down to salvage a point with a 2 2 draw against Nottingham Forest at the city ground. A Chris Wood Double had put the home side in control, but 0gbene pulled one back for luton, before Elijah Adebayo scored in added time to make it three games without defeat for the visitors. Luton remain 17th, two places below forest. At the end, i wasjust reminded it was only the one point. We want more and i know the boys are capable of more as well. So we take a lot of pride in it. Really, really pleased with lots, but we can be better and were going to get better. So, yeah, it was a good day for us, but theres more to come. Gary 0neil saw his wolves side pick up all three points, with a 2 1win over his former side bournemouth at the vitality stadium. The home side were in front, but had a player sent off after wolves had equalised and two minutes from time, conceded a winner, which takes wolves up to 12th in the table. Bournemouth remain two points from bottom, without a win this season. Brentford got their first home win of the season with a comfortable 3 0 victory over burnley at the Gtech Community stadium. Spectacular goals from bryan mbeumo and Saman Ghoddos helped the home side to the win it takes them up to 14th and six points above the relegation zone. That is where burnley sit, though theyve won just one of their opening nine games, and the Clarets Manager says his team must now show resolve. Promotion chasing Preston North End drew 1 all with millwall in the championship s lunchtime kick off. After winning six league games out of seven, preston had lost their last three, but Mads Frokjaer put them ahead in the third minute. Managerless millwall fought back and, after half an hour, zian flemmings superb strike secured a point for the lions. The Severe Weather in scotland meant three of the days premiership games were postponed. Kilmarnock captain kyle vassell scored twice, as they ended their seven game winless run with a 3 1 victory over livingston. And the new rangers manager began his reign with a Thumping A Nil win against hibs Abdullah Sima scoring twice as they moved to within four points of leaders celtic. Manchester city are back on top of the womens super league, thanks to a 1 nil win at leicester. England striker chloe kelly was the scorer at the King Power Stadium and the win moved them a point ahead of tottenham. Who won 4 2 at aston villa earlier the leagues top scorer Martha Thomas with a hat trick. Next, lets talk about england against south africa the rugby to come, but first, the cricket world cup. The two countries have already played each other today. A match that saw england suffer one of their all time worst defeats. Losing by 229 runs in mumbai their hopes of reaching the knockout stages are now hanging by a thread. Joe lynskey reports. For all the recent highs in english cricket, this may be their lowest point. Defeat to south africa by more than 200 runs a record margin, a rough day. They had won the toss in mumbai and chose to bowl. It looked promising, but from 4 1, south africa charged. Heinrich klaasen beat his way through the humidity to score a century at speed. It came in 61 balls. It will be 100. In the last ten overs, south africa raced clear. England had conceded their highest ever one day score. They now had to chase 400. There is a man exactly there. Butjohnny bairstow went for ten, and the rest got a few more. Ben stokes was back from injury, but was brilliantly caught and bowled. When jos buttler fell, englands batters had disintegrated, humiliated. Only the tail end brought some resolve. Mark wood scored quickly. But for his team, it came too late. England can still go through, but must win all five games they now have left. For the team whove risen so far, this was a brutal fall. So another defeat for england. With many questioning their decision to bowl first. Heres captainjos buttler. You always reflect after games and question your decisions. Certainly, with hindsight, the physicality of that innings, potentially, batting first would have been a better decision. But im not going to sit here and question it in that sense and say we should have done this or that. Its the decision i took at the time, i thought it was the right one and i still believe if we were chasing 340, 350, we would have done really well in those conditions. Englands next opponents, sri lanka, avoided becoming victims of another netherlands upset to record their first victory of this world cup. Paul van meekeren was the final wicket to fall for the netherlands as they set the lankans a target of 263. Sadeera samarawickrama pushed them well towards that total, as he ended the match 91 not out. Dushan hemanthas boundary secured a five wicket win for sri lanka. Weve talked about the cricket world cup. England fans will be hoping for better against south africa at the Rugby World Cup tonight, where victory would take them into next weekends final against new zealand. South africa are the favourites, but can england keep their winning run going and avenge their defeat in the final four years ago . 0ur Sports Correspondent andy swiss is in paris, ahead of the 8 oclock kick off. Well, thousands of england fans are arriving here at the Stade De France, and i think the general mood is optimistic, but also realistic. They know they are the big underdogs. South africa, of course, are the reigning World Champions, they beat england pretty comprehensively in the final four years ago and they are also the new world number ones, deposing ireland. So south africa at the moment are pretty much the complete package. As for england, well, they really struggled in the build up to this world cup. They struggled in the six nations, they struggled in the warm up matches. But there are signs, particularly in their win over fiji in the quarterfinals, that they are really starting to find some form and starting to find some fluency. The weather, as you can probably see, is not the greatest here at the Stade De France, its pretty wet, its pretty windy. So that mightjust suit englands chances, especially their kicking game. But as i said earlier on, thousands of englands fans have been arriving here all day. Theyve been enjoying themselves in the pubs, the cafes, the restaurants around paris. Earlier on, i caught up with one family who have been driving around france watching all of englands matches, so what do they make of their chances tonight . Whether theres enough in the bag for today, its going to be very, very, very close. Whether we have got enough, i pray we have, but its going to be very, very close. There will be about a six, seven point difference. L maybe 26 20, Something Like that. A couple of tries from either side and then theyll be decided hopefully on a drop goal from farrell or something, to give the game a bit of excitement. We can possibly beat them if we go wide, but itsjust, im excited. Its going to be a really good game. I dont think weve got enough to beat south africa personally. I hope we have, i really hope im wrong, ijust think theyll be too strong for us. Yes, it is going to be some challenge for england tonight, but then again, they have enjoyed defying their critics at this world cup so far. Can they defy their critics once again . Kick off here at the Stade De France is at eight oclock your time. Seven minutes away. Live commentary on bbc radio 5 live. Defending champions saracens fell to their second defeat of the premiership season as they were beaten 25 16 by bath. Whilst last years runners up sale edged a tight encounter with Leicester Tigers at welford road, winning by 24 points to 17 thanks to robert du preez s match winning performance. In the days other game, bristol beat northampton saints. On to the united Rugby Championship and defending champions munster have made a winning start to their title defence, beating the sharks of south africa 34 21. Elsewhere, there were wins for ulster, connacht and edinburgh, while cardiff suffered a late defeat at home to benetton. Wales have been beaten in their opening match of the wxv rugby unions newest competition in the womens game. They faced canada, a side theyd not beaten since 2006, and wales were in the game at half time when they reduced the deficit to four points. But canada scored three second half tries to win 42 22 in wellington. Max verstappen will start tonights sprint race at the United States grand prix from pole. The World Champion could only manage sixth in qualifying for sundays main race, but no one could catch him in the sprint shoot out. Ferraris Charles Leclerc will line up alongside him at the Circuit Of The Americas in austin. Britains Lewis Hamilton completed the top three, just seven hundredths of a second behind verstappen. After 37 years of racing, Frankie Dettori claimed a Fairytale Final Win on his last british ride, as king of steel took the champion stakes at ascot. The 52 year old had begun the afternoon with victory on trawlerman in the first race of the day, before guiding king of steel home. Dettori, who has more than 3,300 wins, initially intended to retire completely from the sport, but will now go on to ride in the United States. I wanted to finish my career at the top. I thought, ill give it one more year. And ive had an amazing time. I thought that things were going to slow down and i would say my last farewell to everyone. But completely the opposite. I went to america and i had such a good time. And then as soon as i got back, i never stopped winning. Guineas. 0akes. Coronation. Gold cups. Non stop. Still, because of the success, i feel its a little bit left in me. And obviously, i said my last goodbyes in europe, so thats why im moving to america, to just get the riding out of my system. So i didnt really. I had to eat all my words when i said i was good to retire fully. So in a way, im sad that im leaving this country, but it would have been a bit of a repetition. And it would have been. So this way, americas a new challenge for me and it will be a good way for me to slow down. Frankie dettori. And a reminder of our top story tonight. Sir Bobby Charlton, a man who transcended the sport, a giant of the game, according to his former club Manchester United, has died today at the age of 86. His achievements are amongst the greatest of any english player. My final words are Manchester Uniteds words tonight sir bobby was a hero to millions, notjust in manchester or the united kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world. Goodnight. Thats all from sportsday. Hello. Some parts of the country have had between 100 and 200 millilitres of rain. The exact figures have still yet to be verified, but they have been exceptional. Now, the red warning has expired from eastern scotland, but the Amber Warning for heavy rain is still valid in the north of scotland. We have to wait a little while before this Weather Front completely clears away and i think by this stage, already, well be experiencing Better Weather conditions in the east of scotland. Actually, across many parts of the uk, its a case of generally clear weather, dry weather through the night. And its also going to turn quite chilly, perhaps murky, misty in a few places. The Early Morning temperatures on sunday will be two in aberdeen, about that in newcastle. But i think in most bigger towns and cities, closer to around five to perhaps nine celsius. Now, the troublesome low that has brought all of that mayhem is now moving away to the north. This is the weather map for sunday, and were actually in between Weather Systems so some decent weather, im very pleased to say, on the way. From morning onwards, a lot of bright, if not sunny, weather. Yes, there will be a few showers here and there, but nothing compared to what weve had in the last few days. So overall, a bright day, if not sunny day for most of us, and much, much better across scotland. Look at that, sunshine and 11 degrees there in aberdeen. But sunday into monday, the next area of low pressure approaches and this one Will Reach Southern Parts of the uk. And also, another Weather Front will reach northern ireland, too. So, through the early hours of monday, the next Weather Front approaches, whereas many parts of the country wake up to sunshine. And its going to be a very decent day across scotland in terms of the weather. Northern england also fairly bright. But across the south, the next spell of rain is approaching. And, in fact, that Weather Front will be sweeping northwards across monday night. And the outlook is looking very unsettled across the uk, with the risk of further heavy rain and also Gale Force Winds right across the country. So a very unsettled outlook on the way. Bye bye. Live from london. This is bbc news. The un says its negotiating for a second convoy of aid to be allowed into gaza on sunday. Twenty truckloads crossed from egypt this morning the first since israel imposed a total siege on the strip. One of englands greatest footballers, and Manchester United legend sir Bobby Charlton dies, at the age of 86. And storm babet continues to batter parts of the uk bringing high winds, severe flooding and risk to life warnings. Hello, im samantha simmonds. The un says its negotiating for a second aid convoy of 20 to 30 trucks to be allowed into gaza on sunday, earlier, 20 trucks crossed into the strip from egypt the first since israel began its total siege of gaza 12 days ago. 4,385 people have been killed there in the last two weeks according to the hamas run Gaza Health Ministry more than 1,700 of them children.
