This is bbc news, the headlines. British Prime Minister rishi sunak is in israel for talks aimed at preventing the conflict from spilling across the region and to express his solidarity with the country. Egypt agrees to allow humanitarian aid into gaza. Israel says it wont impede deliveries, as long as supplies do not reach hamas. Israeli forces and Hezbollah Exchange fire across the lebanon border. Israel says its moved thousands of extra troops to the region. British Prime Minister rishi sunak is injerusalem for his two day visit to the middle east. Mr sunak met israeli president isaac herzog and expressed personal condolences over the loss of life. He told the president that the uk stands in solidarity with israel and backed its right to defend itself. Mr sunak s office said the men agreed on the importance of getting aid to ordinary palestinians in gaza and stressed the need to avoid Futher Escalation across the region. Mr sunak is also expected to meet Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu. Lets speak to our Diplomatic Correspondent paul adams, whos here with me. We have been talking throughout the morning about this very long list of four rishi sunak, ada sagi, trying to express the need to avoid an escalation of conflict throughout this inflamed region, but also the Micro Concerns for british Passport Holders, amongst Palestinian Civilians in gaza and the hostages taken to gaza by Palestinian Militants on the 7th Of October. There are so much to talk about and urgently try and address. On that regional dimension, despite the fact we are hearing once again of disturbances along the northern border, clashes with hezbollah, i am quite struck by the fact we have not seenin quite struck by the fact we have not seen in the wake of what happened in gaza, the explosion at the hospital and all the furore surrounding it, we have not seen an enormous reaction or a lot of heated rhetoric from iran, as some people fear we might. So perhaps, just perhaps that regional dimension has receded somewhat rather than advanced. The famous last words and it could get worse but at the moment perhaps it is not quite as dangerous as it seemed at first. There are other things that are incredibly dont make the Aid Situation is vital. Mr sunak is here and James Cleverly is talking to egypt about their side of trying to get the aid convoy into gaza. We think that will happen tomorrow. It will be somewhat experimental, just 20 trucks at first, a drop in the ocean in terms of what is ray needed. And on that question of what is needed, a tweet this morning from a doctor who we have been hearing a lot of over the last week or so, in a hospital in Gaza Saints Vinegarfrom last week or so, in a hospital in gaza saints vinegar from the corner shop is being used to treat bacterial infections. The need for medication is absolutely vital and thatis medication is absolutely vital and that is one of the components of the aid that is going into gaza as early as tomorrow. Aid that is going into gaza as early as tomorrow as tomorrow. Good i ust stop you there, because as tomorrow. Good i ust stop you there, because we as tomorrow. Good i just stop you there, because we were as tomorrow. Good i just stop you there, because we were talking i as tomorrow. Good i just stop you there, because we were talking about this glimmer of hope, the idea of the 20 truck convoy being able to go to the gaza strip with this much needed aid as of tomorrow, but we have to emphasise that it is a drop in the ocean if it arrives, and yet it may not arrive or it could be interrupted because israel backed by the us says if there are signs of any of the side being taken by hamas for its use it would be stopped, but for its use it would be stopped, but for practical point again this morning we have been talking about hamas ands many hats, a militant armed organisation, also the governor of gaza. find armed organisation, also the governor of gaza. If you look at the map my understanding is that aid other side. If you look at the map my understanding is that aid has | other side. If you look at the map i my understanding is that aid has to cross over and then make its way just a few kilometres along the border fence and of the mediterranean toes to a little area which the israeli identified yesterday as the place where palestinians can receive humanitarian aid. That little corridor needs to be secured. It will be up to the un and the International Community of the red cross to surprise at stop obviously they are not armed. If hamas decide they are not armed. If hamas decide they want to interfere with that there is nothing new and can do to stop that. Theres quite a bit the israelis could do to stop that. The israelis could do to stop that. The israelis have made it absolutely clear if we see any signs that hamas is trying to exploit the situation that hamas is trying play sound on any of this aid, we have ways of bringing the whole thing to a halt. So it does hang by a thread. It does require the cooperation of many parties, the israelis, egyptians, hamas and the lowest of it, but at the moment Clearlyjoe Biden felt that what he had identified by the end of his trip yesterday was a deal that could work. It end of his trip yesterday was a deal that could work. That could work. It was interesting, many aspects that could work. It was interesting, many aspects of that could work. It was interesting, many aspects of the that could work. It was interesting, many aspects of the joe that could work. It was interesting, many aspects of the joe bidens many aspects of the joe biden s visit yesterday but one of the points said he said he also had very frank discussions with israels Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu, was to say dont react in anger, and he looked back to how the us reacted after 911 and he basically said dont get carried away by your angen dont get carried away by your anger, and we look back to the 7th Of October and we have to say unprecedented attacks on israels soil, it has because not only trauma to the fabric, National Trauma to the country, 11100 people sorted, over 200 hostages taken into the gaza strip, but this morning from a staunch ally us and uk today, remember the rules of war. I thought esterda remember the rules of war. I thought yesterday was remember the rules of war. I thought yesterday was a remember the rules of war. I thought yesterday was a really remember the rules of war. I thought yesterday was a really important, yesterday was a really important, perhaps one of the most important speeches joe perhaps one of the most important Speechesjoe Biden has made as president. He is often characterised and mocked for being elderly and a bit bumbling. Here was the wisdom of an old man, saying, we made mistakes after 9 11. We were consumed by rats and rage, and also result of that our actions were not proportionate or wise. Our actions were not proportionate orwise. Our actions were not proportionate or wise. Consumed by wrath. An indirect reference to a whole terrible chapter of history, specifically in iraq. He is saying to benjamin netanyahu, for god sake dont make the same mistakes we made. Observe the rules of war, dont fight according to the rules of terrorist groups, fight according to your own values, values that you come at the israelis and United States share. It was an incredibly powerful message, designed to try to the extent that he can to influence the extent that he can to influence the way israel conducts its military operations. Forthe the way israel conducts its military operations. For the first time israel has brought, it has allowed The Americans into their Decision Making process. Antony blinken sitting in on a Cabinet Meeting for eight hours, the president arriving here before it has even begun, these are completely unprecedented moments. And because The Americans had been allowed into The Americans had been allowed into the Decision Making process it gives them a measure of influence on how israel will ultimately operate. How that influence is actually manifested, when it happens, we will have to see. You manifested, when it happens, we will have to see have to see. You talk about when it ha ens, have to see. You talk about when it happens. We have to see. You talk about when it happens. We come have to see. You talk about when it happens, we come back have to see. You talk about when it happens, we come back to have to see. You talk about when it happens, we come back to the have to see. You talk about when it happens, we come back to the ideaj have to see. You talk about when it i happens, we come back to the idea of the Ground Offensive. Pretty much immediately after those september the 11th, sorry 7th Of October attacks inside israel, there was immediate speculation fuelled by israeli authorities as well, of an imminent Ground Offensive, them saying we need to wipe out hamas, we wipe out a mass mic, rishi sunak here today, joe biden yesterday saying israel has a right to defend itself, so the thinking is, we could be looking again now at the start of a Ground Offensive. You mention fragility, just a few months ago, how are these Palestinian Civilians safeguard, their safety taken into account at the same time as israel saying we want to wipe out hamas in a territory that is so overcrowded as we await site and so tiny. From one life to the other, i dont want to be flippant, the length of a marathon. To be flippant, the length of a marathon to be flippant, the length of a marathon. , ,. , marathon. The bottom line is, you cannot reconcile marathon. The bottom line is, you cannot reconcile those marathon. The bottom line is, you cannot reconcile those two cannot reconcile those two objectives. You cannot tell 2. 3 million palestinians go and crowd in one tiny little part of the Southern Gaza strip while we obliterate a rest. That is just not going to happen. So when a Ground Offensive comes, everyone recognises it is going to be brutal and bloody and costly. I have covered previous rounds of this and when i arrived last time in 2014 the israelis had conducted a of air strikes and went underground. It was pretty quick. It has already been 12 days now and we still not, i dont get a sense the Ground Operation is absolutely imminent. It is taking the israelis quite long time to get ready for this, just because the International Community, The Americans, brits are saying hang on, but because actually what they are saying out to do this time he so much more complicated, so much more comprehensive than anything they have tried before, that they know themselves that they need time to make sure it works because otherwise an awful lot of Palestinian Civilians are going to die and a lot of plot of is very soldiers are going to die and an awful lot of hostages are going to die. All sorts of reasons to just wait. Die. All sorts of reasons to ust wait. . , die. All sorts of reasons to ust wait. . , die. All sorts of reasons to ust wait. . ,. ,. ,. , wait. But in the meantime a lot of palestinian wait. But in the meantime a lot of Palestinian Civilians wait. But in the meantime a lot of Palestinian Civilians are wait. But in the meantime a lot of Palestinian Civilians are suffering. Palestinian civilians are suffering continued to suffer, those images seen around the world on social media and here on the bbc and elsewhere, and inflaming passions, you say, from the wider picture you dont get a sense immediately of a region about to erupt into violence, but on the street there is a lot of anger across the arab world. We saw again overnight use demonstrations in beirut, in the west bank here In The City Of Ramallah and elsewhere, and the leaders of countries, whether it is lebanon orjordan, they will keep an eye on what people are doing on the street. The they will keep an eye on what people are doing on the street. Are doing on the street. The arab street is a are doing on the street. The arab street is a noisy are doing on the street. The arab street is a noisy place are doing on the street. The arab street is a noisy place at are doing on the street. The arab street is a noisy place at the are doing on the street. The arab street is a noisy place at the bestj street is a noisy place at the best of times. It is a place where strong powerful, sometimes violent emotions are expressed. And sometimes leaders allow that and sometimes leaders suppress that. Interestingly some of that anger was directed in ramallah at the palestinian leadership, the elderly palestinian president mahmoud abbas, notjust that israel, so there is this enormous swelling of anger, and a profound unshakeable belief that what happened at the hospital two days ago was the result of an israeli air strike, not an errant palestinian missile as israel argues. That belief will never be changed, it doesnt matter how much the israelis gave in terms of evidence to suggest that it was a misfiring missile, at that Angle Willjust be expressed, it will maybe paid, but unlikely to fade very much given that every day brings fresh word of suffering, people displaced, people dying in hospitals, of malnutrition, thirst and hunger, all of these things are fuelling all of this on a day to day basis, but yes, at the moment it doesnt feel to me as if the world outside the gaza strip is about to erupt. But obviously when the moment comes, when israel decides to pull the trigger to send its troops then, that will be another moment of extreme peril across the region. Paul adams, thank you forjoining us. Our Diplomatic Correspondent. We were amongst so many other aspects of the current conflict discussing of the current conflict discussing of course the humanitarian situation on the ground in gaza. Live now to James Denselow he is the head of conflict and humanitarian advocacy at Save The Children. Could you illustrate on the ground, we mentioned, 50 of the population in gaza is under the age of 18, so when we talk about civilian suffering in gaza, this includes a lot of young people and children. Tragically we have seen over a thousand children reported killed, one every 15 minutes, thousands who have been injured in a population not this the majority of whom are children but also the majority of whom are dependent on humanitarian aid. As you havejust whom are dependent on humanitarian aid. As you have just discussed, what could happen tomorrow in the entry of these 20 trucks into gaza is a glimmer of hope. What we really need to do is get behind that and turnit need to do is get behind that and turn it into a beacon of humanity because they need is absolutely vast and at present we havent been able to get anything in. We and at present we havent been able to get anything in to get anything in. We were hearing there from save to get anything in. We were hearing there from save the to get anything in. We were hearing there from Save The Children to get anything in. We were hearing there from Save The Children about| there from Save The Children about there from Save The Children about the situation on the ground there. I think we can bring you some live pictures of gaza this morning, where israeli air strikes have surrounded overnight. We will come back to James Denselow in a second, where israel has said it has carried out air strikes overnight. And into the morning as well. James denselow, for people on the ground israel says that it aims its strike at hamas, and hamas infrastructure, not at civilians. We talk also about what an overcrowded place gaza is. Israel says that hamas stations itself very closely to civilian and civilian infrastructure. The result of all of this is that civilians are suffering on the ground. On the ground. Indeed. Over a million palestinians on the ground. Indeed. Over a million palestinians in on the ground. Indeed. Over a million palestinians in gaza i on the ground. Indeed. Over a i million palestinians in gaza have been forced from their home and the challenges we have seen in that attack on the hospital is that if you have lots and lots of people gathering in their open areas, the use of any form of Explosive Weapon can be devastating and deadly. Children are particularly and uniquely vulnerable to these weapons. They have thinner skin, less blood, and that is why we are seeing such terrible tools. This less blood, and that is why we are seeing such terrible tools. Seeing such terrible tools. As you were speaking seeing such terrible tools. As you were speaking there seeing such terrible tools. As you were speaking there we seeing such terrible tools. As you were speaking there we are seeing such terrible tools. As you l were speaking there we are seeing pictures of british Prime Minister rishi sunak, now meeting israels Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu. He met israels president earlier this morning. Talking about the wider situation in the middle east. But also focusing very much on the humanitarian situation inside gaza when he arrived, the british Prime Minister said this is of immense concern to alleviate the suffering on the ground. When you see these diplomatic attempts to help Gaza Civilians to try and get aid in, including joe biden here yesterday, the us president , how hopeful in a terrible situation that we are in now in the region do you feel . We have to now in the region do you feel . Have to have hope and tomorrow we will see if that hope from the most powerful man in the world can translate into 20 trucks with vital medicines and food and clean water getting into gaza. Of course we know the 20 trucks is a drop in the ocean as you just said, 100 trucks is a bare minimum before this escalation, we need to know it is safe of these tricks to get where they needed to get to, in the south of gaza, that aid can be distributed safely to people there that are, there are teams in gaza who have had to move themselves and have been in deep danger. We have seen 30 aid workers killed so far, can operate safely so it isntjust killed so far, can operate safely so it isnt just that a conviction killed so far, can operate safely so it isntjust that a conviction of the crossing itself, it is making sure there and safe spaces in the south of gaza from tomorrow onwards. As you say, to make sure it is safe for people to receive this aid, safer Aid Organisations to hand out the aid, israel backed by the United States has said even if the convoy starts going into the gaza strip, it can stop them at any time, these lorries of age, if it sees that hamas is diverting supplies. How can that be stopped considering that hamas is armed, and hamas governs the gaza strip . I hamas is armed, and hamas governs the gaza strip . The gaza strip . I would say that aid auoin into the gaza strip . I would say that aid going into gaza the gaza strip . I would say that aid going into gaza has the gaza strip . I would say that aid going into gaza has been the gaza strip . I would say that aid going into gaza has been going the gaza strip . I would say that aid going into gaza has been going in l going into gaza has been going in for decades, undera un going into gaza has been going in for decades, under a un controlled and coordinated mechanism. Very successfully. In a way there is historical relationship there between the Aid Community and the ability to get aid into gaza but of course it could be disrupted and the most terrifying prospect is that you have large numbers of civilians moving towards where they think they can get aid, where they think is safe, but then violence occurs in their vicinity and that is when you see must because of the events. But lets not forget the denial of humanitarian aid to children is a grave violation of childrens rights and is accepted so by the un so i think we should have all eyes on these convoys tomorrow and hope that they can quickly scale up from 2200 in a matter of days. They can quickly scale up from 2200 in a matter of days. In a matter of days. 20100. We have been in a matter of days. 20100. We have been reporting in a matter of days. 20100. What about people, including children, who have been injured in aerial bombardment of the gaza strip . We have talked about the hope by third countries that they may be able to take Passport Holders amongst the palestinian civilian population out of the gaza strip, it might be able to. There is concern on israels northern border with lebanon and the escalating tension between israel and the iranian backed goup hezbollah. Our correspondent hugo bachega reports on the latest developments from lebanon. Violence has continued along the israeli lebanese border, with more cross border attacks between the israeli army and militants here in lebanon. The Israeli Military said it struck positions belonging to hezbollah overnight, destroying an observation post. It said this was in response after shooting attacks that were carried out by hezbollah yesterday. We had a statement from hezbollah confirming that it had carried out attacks targeting israeli positions. And the institute for the study of war, which has been monitoring the situation, said that there were 20 incidents along the border yesterday. This is double the number of incidents that were reported on tuesday. So, again, tensions are high along the border, amid fears that this conflict could escalate. Hezbollah is a powerful military, social, Political Organisation here in lebanon that is supported by iran, and many fear that an escalation of the violence along the border could drag lebanon into this conflict. Reporting about concerns about the crisis escalating throughout the middle east. Urging for that not to happen is the british Prime Minister rishi sunak who arrived in israel today. This is part of a two day visit to the region. He would then be going on to talk to arab leaders. He tweeted earlier today after meeting a Family Member of one of the more than 200 people taken hostage by militants inside gaza and taken into the gaza strip. He talked about how unimaginable it is for a parent to have a child taken from them. An emotional reaction. He has expressed his support in meetings with israels Prime Minister and with israels Prime Minister and with the president as well. Support for israel as well as great concern for israel as well as great concern for the plight of Palestinian Civilians inside gaza and hope that some aid may reach them as soon as tomorrow. This is bbc news. Hello again. Storm babet has been making its presence felt, in the sense weve have had some heavy rain and strong winds, and that will continue through the day. The met office have its highest level of warning the red warning in force for angus and South Aberdeenshire for heavy rain, and that comes into play at 18 00 tonight and lasts until noon tomorrow. Now, you can see over the next few days, all of us are going to see some rain, but the heaviest will be across North East Scotland and the pennines, where some parts will have in excess of 100 millilitres. As we go through the rest of today, then, The Rain Becomes Ensconced and stalls across North East Scotland. Well see further rain into the south. But for northern ireland, england and wales, its sunshine and showers. Some of those showers are going to be heavy and thundery, some merging to give longer spells of rain, and its going to be windy wherever you are. But the met office has an Amber Weather Warning out for the strength of wind across North East Scotland, especially close to the coast, we could have gusts of 70 mph, so some large waves. And just under that, you can see another rain warning, and another one across the north east, where we could have 100 millimetres of rainfall. But its the red warning area thats giving us most concern. Here, we could have up to 250 millimetres of rain and extensive floodings quite possible as, indeed, is further disruption. Now, as we head through the evening and overnight, the rain continues across the north, its going to be windy, with gales even severe gales across the north and east, and then it looks like a new area of low pressure is going to show its hand across parts of england and also wales. Its not going to be a cold night, though. Now, tomorrow, this area of rain across the south east is still open to question. It might drift a bit further west quicker than were showing here or slower, so do keep in touch with the weather forecast. But the rain will ease off across scotland. And although its still going to be very windy, with coastal gales along the east coast, were not looking at the gusts of 70 mph that were likely to see today. Then as we head on into saturday, well, depending what happens on friday, the low pressure looks like its going to pull off into the north sea. It will be brighter out towards the west, well have further rain across the north of scotland and the wind will still be a feature, but it wont be as windy as its going to be in the next couple of days. And its only slowly as we move into sunday, things start to ease further. Live from jerusalem, this is bbc news.
