He is visiting, and i because israel is focusing on other things, but i would not be surprised if in the medium distance that President Biden goes to demonstrate his solidarity with israel. ,. , Around The World and across the uk, this is bbc news. More foreign prisoners are to be deported to their home countries under plans to tackle overcrowding injails. Justice secretary alex chalk is due to set out plans in the commons today for reducing the Prison Population in england and wales. Figures show thatjails are approaching full capacity with the number of inmates at an all time high. Social media has been awash with false claims, Conspiracy Theories and hateful content surrounding whats happening in israel and gaza. There are questions over whether fake accounts are being used to manipulate the conversation. Marianna spring our disinformation social media correspondent has been investigating these claims and had more on this. When i opened up My Tiktok Feed last week, i was greeted almost immediately by a video of an israeli woman being taken hostage on the 7th of october. And when i opened up the comments below, i was really surprised to see that there were people suggesting that she wasnt really a civilian, even though the bbc had verified that footage and demonstrated that she was. Suggesting she was a soldier, or even suggesting that this was faked, staged in some way to frame hamas and the militants who were involved. And its notjust been limited to false speculation about hostages. Ive also seen, for example, just over the weekend, a video that showed a palestinian Makeup Artist from a report from back in 2017 and people suggesting this was somehow an example of real people whove been injured in gaza having makeup put on them and that it was staged. A lot of these narratives appear online again and again when Something Like this unfolds, but its been really quite extreme over the past few days. Over the past week. The question of who is interesting, sometimes its a lot more obvious. Take, for example, justin bieber, the pop star who shared a picture on his Instagram Story saying pray for israel, but then with an image of destruction in gaza by Israeli Forces underneath it. And that seemed to be kind of a mistake. There are other examples of big accounts that have shared either anti muslim rhetoric, which are indian based accounts that support the Prime Minister there, modi, or other accounts that have a track record of promoting Conspiracy Theories about everything from the pandemic to the war in ukraine. And then there are the accounts where its a little bit harder to figure out whos behind them. And sometimes they seem to be genuine, young people, people who post otherwise about football or other different topics who are interested in this and are sharing false or misleading claims theyve seen. Other accounts are a little bit harder to figure out whether theyre real people. Theyre ones where theyre often posting conflicting and divisive content, maybe talking about the situation in ukraine, as well as talking about former us President Donald Trump and then also whats happening in israel and gaza and sharing misleading claims. And that question of inauthentic accounts is one i get a lot. How much of this is real people . How much of it is bots . Those inauthentic accounts used to manipulate the conversation. Both hamas militants and the Israeli Government have been accused of using inauthentic accounts in the past to manipulate that conversation. And right now, its really hard to tell. There are some groups, for example, whove done research that suggests, according to them, over 40,000 fake accounts have been employed in this conversation, being used to kind of distort whats being said. Ultimately, we rely on information from the social Media Companies to figure out if an account is real or fake and to figure out whos running it. Why does it matter . What are the consequences of all of this disinformation . I think whats really important to remember here is that the Disinformation On Social Media can really muddy the water. It can make it very difficult to know whats happening on the ground, especially if youre relying on social media for updates. And so when that comes to the International Community trying to investigate allegations of war crimes, trying to provide aid or to figure out whats happening where, it actually is something thats really important. And this goes beyond just whats happening on social media. There are also allegations about, you know, spokespeople on either side or claims being made by forces and authorities. And so its really important that, as youve been showing for the past few days, we have people on the ground who are able to tell us what theyre seeing and what theyre not seeing. And then we can piece together the truth. Now to poland. And what is happening there. A third exit poll in poland has now predicted the governing law and Justice Party won the biggest share of the vote in sundays elections but could still lose power. Its likely to have the first opportunity to form a government, although it is expected to struggle to command a parliamentary majority. That would open the door to three Opposition Groups to form a coalition. The largest among them is the civic coalition, led by the former head of the european council, donald tusk. Translation yesterday People A Roached translation yesterday people approached me translation yesterday people approached me and translation yesterday people approached me and said, translation yesterday people approached me and said, will. Translation yesterday people| approached me and said, will you translation yesterday people approached me and said, will you be able to do it . It was not possible for so many years. This is the end of this bad time, this is the end of the rule of law and justice. Law and justice. Our Eastern Europe correspondent Sarah Rainsford explained what this could mean for the direction of the country. I think it potentially heralds a massive turnaround here in this country. I mean, all along, throughout the campaigning, both sides are presenting this as a historic vote, talking about poland deciding its future direction. And voters were really given a pretty stark choice. It was between continuing with the law and Justice Party, which has been in power here for eight years and which was campaigning on a platform of security, in particular of high social spending, and also very much anti illegal migration. Or the opposition party, which was saying that the government represents a threat to democracy, saying that essentially its ruined relations with the eu, that there are massive problems here with the rule of law in poland, something which has meant that the eu is holding back a lot of funding for poland. Talking about problems with the independence of the media too, with womens rights, with lgbt rights and other fundamental issues here. So the opposition was campaigning on this platform for change and judging by the results so far, the exit polls and around about half of the votes counted, it does look like the Opposition Coalition, so several Opposition Parties would have a majority and would be able to form a government whilst the ruling law and Justice Party would not. For the moment, we are not at that stage. Were about halfway through the vote count, but certainly last night we were at the Party Headquarters or the Election Results headquarters for the opposition and they were celebrating like it was victory. Certainly lots of people today supporting the opposition saying we have won poland back. You know, this is the first day of a new future. Donald tusk himself called it a rebirth for poland. And, you know, what do the Opposition Parties actually disagree on then, sarah . Because obviously, if there is an Opposition Coalition appointed and confirmed, they are going to have to Work Together and that may end up being quite difficult. I think it might be a bigger problem for the Opposition Parties to Work Together. Theyre broadly in consensus on some of the key issues and certainly in terms of the changes that they believe need to be made here in poll. I think what could be the problem will be that there will still be a very large constituency from the Governing Party and another far right party, which also looks like it will also have a number of seats in parliament. So i think Going Forward with the president as well being backed by the Governing Party, any kind of coalition of opposition might find it difficult to make the kinds of changes that theyve been promising that they do want. But first and foremost, there needs to be a decision on who is going to have the first chance at forming a government. And weve just heard from the president , he was in the vatican today on a visit. He was speaking, making a short statement. He mentioned nothing yet about forming a government. He talked about this election being a gigantic success for polish democracy because, specifically, he was talking about the enormous turnout, 73 almost, which is a record for poland in its democratic history, its post communist history. I think itjust shows how important many, many Polish People have seen this election. So many people turned out to vote. I think young people turned out in particularly high numbers because this, they felt, was a vote about their future. Our Eastern Europe correspondent talking about the elections in poland there. You can find out more about that and all the other stories on our website as always. We will be back at the top of the hour. That is it for me. Goodbye. Hello. The second named storm of the season, storm babet, is on its way later on in the week. So some wet and windy weather on the cards, but a week of two halves really. In the next few days, mostly dry. Weve got some frost, but some sunshine by day. Its from midweek onwards that we see the Weather Turning increasingly windy with some heavy rain, too. So if we take a look at storm babet, it will be heading its way gradually in from the southwest, moving towards our shores. I think increasingly heavy rain developing from wednesday onwards and lasting particularly through thursday and friday across eastern scotland. But lots of wet weather on the cards for many of us. Back to the here and now, though, today its really quite quiet out there. Weve got a lot of high cloud across much of england and wales. So fairly grey here. Some sunshine for Northern England, though, Northern Ireland and scotland, some showers across the Northern Ireland. Temperatures somewhere between 11 to iii. Certainly on the cool side. Through this evening and tonight, then well see that Thickening Cloud Continuing to move in for southern and southwestern england. Some splashes of rain for the channel isles, for instance, the Isles Of Scilly as well. The breeze picking up here. But further north, weve got lighter winds and clearer skies. So the lowest temperatures will be across parts of scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland, where were certainly expecting another frost to start the day tomorrow. So, tuesdays weather still relatively quiet, a bit of Early Morning mist and fog to clear away from central areas. And then weve got some sunshine for scotland, Northern Ireland, eastern england, too, but Cloudier Skies for wales and South West England with some outbreaks of rain particularly close to the coast. Temperatures ii to perhaps 15 degrees or so for most of us. A touch up on what were seeing out there today. And then as we move through tuesday night into wednesday, take a look at this area of low pressure moving its way in from the bay of biscay. The isobars really squeezing as well so that shows us were going to have that windy spell of weather developing for wednesday. Some outbreaks of rain initially for parts of scotland, then later for Northern Ireland, wales, central and southern england, too. So the winds picking up around that area of rain, 35 to 45 miles per hour, gusts of wind. So enough to cause some disruption. Temperatures starting to come up a little bit, so milder with the arrival of that southerly or south westerly air flow. But lets take a look at the Rainfall Accumulation were expecting between wednesday and saturday and just take a look at these colours across the east of scotland. There could be 150 to 200 millimetres of rain, especially for parts of angus and south east grampian, so enough to cause significant disruption. Keep your eyes on the latest warnings. Bye bye.
