In gaza, who provided a lot of those pictures, is saying, look, its not happening yet, but for the first time, there are fears that people could die of thirst and hunger. And youve got to bear in mind that rushdi has covered this conflict for decades, and were also beginning to hear that so grim is the situation in the south that there are people who fled down there from the north who are now saying they might as welljust head back in the other direction, back to their homes. Some people telling us the view is, look, if were going to die, wed rather die in our own homes than down in the south. John, all of this as we await potentially some sort of Ground Movement by the israeli military, that still could happen at any point, couldnt it . Yeah. I mean, weve seen the Israeli Forces gathering on the border of gaza for days now, almost more than a week. But in the last few days, they looked to be getting much, much more organized, and everyone is expecting that to come. Theres been talk that the weather maybe wasnt appropriate for the israelis in terms of surveillance from the air, perhaps too cloudy, but everyone is thinking that is coming. And the question is, i guess, you know, israel said it wanted everyone in the north of the country to evacuate south. Well, we know that hundreds of thousands have done so, but its not everyone. We were talking about 1. 1 Million People. You cant evacuate people in hospitals and intensive care beds. You cant evacuate the disabled, the badly injured. So the question i guess is, Will Israel Go ahead with its operation . And we expect it will. If there are still civilians stuck in the north . As weve been hearing diplomatic efforts are focused on trying to open a humanitarian corridor, to allow food, water and medical aid into gaza. 0ur Diplomatic Correspondent James Landale reports. It is called Shuttle Diplomacy for a reason. Antony blinken has dashed from capital to capital across the middle east, meeting six arab leaders in four days. Listening and talking, cajoling and warning. And today he returned to israel to report back on discussions about protecting civilians and securing hostages, and, above all, about how best to avoid this conflict escalating. What ive heard from virtually every partner was a determination, a shared view that we have to do Everything Possible to make sure this doesnt spread to other places. A shared view to safeguard innocent lives, a shared view to get assistance to palestinians in gaza. Israeli troops have already been deployed to their northern border with lebanon amid fears that hezbollah, the iranian backed militants there, could use this opportunity to attack israel. Much depends on this man sitting on the left, irans foreign minister, here meeting hamas leaders in qatar in recent days, rallying support for a group that his Government Backs but many in the west say are terrorists. The United States has already sent one Aircraft Carrier group to the region to deter iran and hezbollah, another carrier is on the way, so worried is the us about escalation. European diplomats are also engaged. Frances foreign minister, here on the left, was in egypt today, pushing to get aid into gaza and foreign nationals out. And russias president , vladimir putin, had a phone call with president assad of syria to discuss, his office said, the humanitarian situation. This morning the Prime Minister visited a Jewish School in london in a show of support after recent anti semitic incidents. We are going to go to the House Of Commons. There is going to be a minute of silence. Commons. There is going to be a minute of silence. Minute of silence. Please oin me now in standing. Thank you. That was the House Of Commons and House Of Lords observing a minutes silence for the victims of the war, both israeli and palestinian. All of those taken hostage and all of those affected by the conflict in the region. We will now leave the houses of parliament. We continue to wait to see when the Ground Offensive is going to happen. And we wait to see what happens with the rafah crossing, because that is where aid could get into gaza potentially and where people could leave potentially, especially those with foreign passports. Jane kinninmont is the Impact Director at the European Leadership Network and formerly covered the middle east at Chatham House and the Economist Intelligence unit. She spoke to me a short while ago. The situation is a desperate one for all of these civilians. And so clearly there are many calls on egypt to open the crossing. The complicating factor is that this is a conflict where previously large numbers of palestinians have been displaced and have never been able to return to their homes. So egypts concern is that potentially some 2 million palestinians could come into egypt and never be able to go back. Its not only that egypt doesnt want to integrate an extra 2 Million People into its own quite poor economy. Its also a concern that the prospects for any future Palestinian State would be much affected if palestinians no longer live in gaza. Now, to be clear, thats not the stated intention of the israeli government, but there have been elements within that government who have said that they think palestinian transfer or expulsion is, as they see it, the solution to the conflict. So what more could israel, america and indeed other arab states do to allay egypts fears . There is lots that could be done. And the thing is, were looking at a humanitarian disaster that looks like a terrible natural disaster. It makes us think of earthquakes. But this is a manmade disaster. It doesnt have to happen. So there is a big question over whether the approach that israel is taking to gaza is actually something that will even strengthen israels security. You know, the us has been saying we must distinguish between hamas and the palestinian population, we must keep open the possibility of a Palestinian State. But because all of the population of gaza is being targeted by having their fuel and water cut off, its hard to see how hearts and minds would be won to have a better relationship with israel. So there are many calls for a ceasefire, for a humanitarian pause, and for everyone to take a breath and think about what this is going to achieve. Lets talk about anthony blinken, the top diplomat and the us secretary of state. Hes been traveling around arab states, trying to make sure that there is some sort of humanitarian element to this moving forward. There has been pressure, hasnt there, from america on israel to avoid what america fears most, which is this broadening out to a regional conflict . Thats exactly what blinken will be concerned about on his trip. And the biggest worry that he has is that iran could get involved. Iranian officials have been saying threatening things. Iran is a supporter of hamas and works with hamas and hezbollah closely. There could be a risk that iran or hezbollah come into this conflict, supposedly to defend the palestinians. Most experts think that is still unlikely. But these are the kinds of risks that blinken will be worried about, about the conflict going beyond israel and gaza and opening up new fronts. However, the arab states, for the most part, they really want regional peace. They dont want to see this happen, but they would like to see everyone working towards a peace that could include a Palestinian State. Turning to the us where in the state of illinois, a man has been charged with murder and hate crimes after allegedly stabbing to death a six year old muslim boy, and severely injuring his mother. Police say 71 year old joseph czuba was the victims landlord, and that he targeted the victims because they were muslim.
