Weve seen flashes over the skies of gaza, as israel continues to carry out airstrikes, saying it is targeting hamas fighters, not civilians. But air strikes have killed and injured civilians. The Palestinian Health Ministry Says at least 50 people were killed overnight. Doctors without borders says hospitals in gaza have only have a few days fuel left in their generators. The World Food Programme has distributed some aid, but the un has warned that israel is in breach of International Law by denying civilians access to Essential Supplies of food, fuel and water. Ii of its own staff there have been killed since saturday. Bbc verify is continuing to monitor the impact of the strikes in gaza. One was on the Islamic University of gaza, targeted between tuesday and wednesday. Several videos released by the Israel Defense forces have shown their attacks. Meanwhile, hamas fighters continue to fire rockets into israel. Many have been intercepted by the countrys iron dome defence system, but a few have broken through. The death toll in israel since hamas s attack on saturday has reached 1,200. More than 1100 have died in gaza in israeli air strikes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formed a unity government with some of his most formidable opponents, but he continues to face questions over whether he was warned as hamas prepared for its surprise attack. The us Secretary Of State Antony Blinken is currently on his way to israel and will meet the Prime Minister to discuss negotiating the release of hostages, and working with neighbouring egypt to allow aid into gaza. Well be keeping an eye on the skies over gaza, as people brace for a possible land invasion by israeli troops. Lets go to southern israel now, where International Editor jeremy bowen has been reporting on israeli troops amassing there. In the fields and farms on the border wire, israels combat soldiers are creating jumping off points to invade gaza. Late this afternoon at kibbutz be eri, regular units, and some of more than 300,000 mobilised reservists, were preparing for the order to move in, that most israelis believe will come. The build up that were seeing here is certainly the clearest evidence that ive witnessed that israel is preparing for a Ground Operation in gaza. And if you add this to the formation of a war cabinet, you can see the direction they must be going in. Israels allies are gathering. Antony blinken, the us Secretary Of State, is flying in overnight from washington. American support includes weapons, and moving an Aircraft Carrier battle group closer, to deter irans allies in lebanon from joining the war. The United States has israels back. We have the back of the israeli people. We have their back today. Well have it tomorrow. We will have it every day. James cleverly, britains foreign secretary, was already here in israel, at a frontline town near gaza. Im not going to speculate on what support we might want to give. Youre not ruling it out though . Im here to find out. Im here to find out what practical support we can give to israel. The foreign secretary was hustled into a shelter when the sirens went. Israel has the full square support of its allies, after the massacres perpetrated by hamas. In the safe rooms, millions of israelis are praying, waiting, often frightened now that assumptions they had about their safety have crumbled. Their government says what its doing in gaza is defending them, but only a few miles from this family in ashkelon, israels onslaught raises questions about whether its breaking the laws of war. In gaza, israel has caused immense damage in only five days. International humanitarian law obliges belligerents to protect civilian lives. Israel says all this is legitimate self defence against hamas. But its also cut off supplies of water, food, fuel and power to more than two Million People and killed hundreds of civilians. Outside the main hospital in gaza city, Alaa Al Khafaji sits with the bodies of his entire close family. Theyd moved twice to escape the air strikes until one hit their borrowed apartment at four this morning. Translation ive lost my father, my brother, | and my pregnant wife. Im the only survivor. He said, weve done nothing. Israel insists hamas is to blame for the suffering of palestinians. But accusations that israel is answering the war crimes of hamas with ones of its own have started. Back in israel, videos are still emerging from the hamas attack last saturday. Security cameras showed two women trying to escape a hamas gunman. Somehow, he misses them. Armed israelis arrive, and the man who wanted to murder them either retreats or is killed. And at a hospital near tel aviv, signs of the tension in israel. A visiting Government Minister gets a furious reception. A nurse yells, theyve been helped by every kind of civilian, but the government has given them nothing. The military build up might steady israeli nerves, and the Defence Minister said tonight, we will wipe hamas off the face of the earth. Jeremy bowen, bbc news in southern israel. Moving now to the situation in gaza, and palestinian media say the only power plant serving the gaza strip has run out of fuel, as israel continues its bombardment. This was the rimal area, in the centre of gaza city, before the strikes this is a Satellite Image of the same neighbourhood after the strikes, located by our colleagues at bbc verify. More than 1100 people are now known to have died and a quarter of a million have left their homes. In khan younis in southern gaza, palestinian Officials Say many people are trapped under rubble and may be impossible to rescue. 0ur Correspondent, Rushdi Abu Alouf is in gaza. He sent this update. Yeah, i was in this neighbourhood that night when the israelis hit 25 targets in the area, within 250 airstrikes in the place. I was among families who live in this residential building. It was chaos all night. Kids screaming. Today, its 08 00. Well, usually israel is starting the night time, like, night wave of airstrikes. I could hear the israeli f 16s buzzing over, overhead and maybe ready for carrying out more airstrikes. Today, the Power Authority decided to stop the only power station, because the fuel is running out, and that would affect Essential Services, such as hospital, as the Palestinian Health Ministry Said that they are going to stick, to stick only to essential, lifesaving treatment, and they will not treat anybody who is not a lifesaving issue. Here in the us, the Biden Administration says 22 americans have been killed in the assault on israel, and that 17 remain unaccounted for. We want to make it real clear. Were working on every aspect of the Hostage Crisis in israel, including deploying experts to advise and assist with recovery efforts. Now the press is going to shout to me and many of you are that, what are you doing to bring these get these folks home . If i told you, i wouldnt be able to get them home. Folks, theres a lot were doing. A lot were doing. I have not given up hope. Im bringing these folks home. Meanwhile, as we heard earlier, the us Secretary Of State is en route to israel to meet with senior officials there. Our state department correspondent, Barbara Plett usher, has more. Secretary blink and is not going to israel to try to mediate and enter the conflict and he has not called for a ceasefire. He said he had a simple message and that was that the United States had israels back, today, tomorrow and every day. This is a message we have been getting from the administration from the president down. They emphasise the brutality and this calibre the hamas attack and say israel should obey the laws of war and avoid civilian casualties in its response. But also said israel had to defend itself and had to make sure it would never happen again. Clearly, they are expecting a forceful response and support it. Us officials are also discussing with israelis and egyptians the possibility of Safe Passage Into Egypt to get humanitarian aid into gaza and let civilians out. But mr lincoln said that was complicated, although he did not into any details. He will also be discussing us hostages when he gets to israel. We do not know how many us hostages might be in gaza. Us officials have said it is a small number, less than a handful at this point that they believe are there, although that number could change. President biden has sent reinforcements in terms of Intelligence Specialists and experts to work on this issue. We understand that he has not deployed hostages rescue teams in the white house has said they really do not have enough information at this point to put together any decision on a operational policy. They will also be consulting very closely with the rallies and are already consulting with them of course, in terms of how the israelis will approach this, what their strategy is for Hostage Recovery and how this fits into their plans for a ground invasion, which it looks as if it is going to happen. A short time ago i spoke about us policy towards israel with congressman dean phillips. He a democrat from minnesota and Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs subcommittee on The Middle East, north africa, and central asia. Congressman phillips, thanks indeed forjoining us. Secretary of state Antony Blinken is travelling to israel. What would you like to see him accomplish while there . Im so pleased us Secretary Of State will be touching down in israel in a number of hours and to share our compassion and our affection and our condolences with a dear friend and ally, and ally to the United Kingdom of course in the United States of course in the United States of america. This is about a lot more than the horrific and despicable attacks by hamas on israeli citizens. This is a time for like minded nations like ours in the United Kingdom and others to unite, because this is about Democracy Versus dictators and democracy is about theocracies and time now we must mobilise and im glad our secretary will be visiting israel and i hope this maybe creates a new chapter for all of us to come together to both defend democracy in The Middle East and europe and where ever it might need defence and to unify in the way that allah is like ours have to do at times like ours have to do at times like these. , allies like ours do you think he will be able to secure the release of hostages and safe passage of civilians out of gaza . Securing release of hostages under the best of conditions is difficult and this is among the worst. We think there are over 150 hostages of many nationalities and we believe some american. This is complicated. Hamas does not value life that we do. And thatis not value life that we do. And that is perhaps the greatest challenge we will face. I hope they are successful but this will not be easy. I think we should be prepared for horrifying days ahead in many areas and in many ways but we have to try and then we have to try to ensure that this never happens again and that means we defeat hamas, we collectively and then turn our attention to peace in a region that need to do deserves it so that palestinians and israelis can live side by side in peace and security and Opportunity Mat State Solution that is necessary should we hoped to prevent this kind of scenario ever again. Prevent this kind of scenario ever again prevent this kind of scenario ever a. Ain. , ever again. The un human rights keeer ever again. The un human rights keeper said ever again. The un human rights keeper said that ever again. The un human rights keeper said that the ever again. The un human rights keeper said that the israeli keeper said that the israeli blockade violates International Law in that it is endangering civilian lives by stopping essential Services Getting into the gaza strip. 0bviously, essential Services Getting into the gaza strip. Obviously, we have seen the power plant there are stop working as well. Stood the usb trying to allow Essential Services into the people there . I Essential Services into the people there . Essential services into the people there . Essential services into the eole there . , people there . I am horrified as a human this people there . I am horrified as a human this transcends a human this transcends politics, religious and braces. My politics, religious and braces. My heart bleeds for israeli parents who have seen graphic images of their own children or babies decapitated. My heart bleeds for palestinian parents who are witnessing the same. With all that said, of course i want to see humane relief for those who want to flee. I wish egypt would open its Border Crossing to afford that. I do not want to see more horrors and murder and bloodshed anymore than the israelis to. With all that said, whatjust in israel. The death of families and babies in the killing of 262 mac at a festival. They will have to use tactics, tactics that are challenging for all to see but the alternative is even worse and that is what we saw play out. To make things can be true it once, i am saddened by the horrors we have seen it will surely see but very understanding of israels requirement to defend itself. If we had missiles raining down about us, if we had Foreign Terrorists and our countries and slaughter our people, the equivalent of 40,000 americans based on populations, i believe our countries would act on the same manner we have a responsibility to, as democracies, to defend our own. Hamas does not care about human life and that is you were in israel recently, you met with the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, we see now that a war cabinet, a unity government has been formed. What is your view of the difference that will make at this time . I difference that will make at this time . This time . I think at a time like this, this time . I think at a time like this, nations this time . I think at a time like this, nations have this time . I think at a time like this, nations have to i this time . I think at a time like this, nations have to come together. Im so pleased that a unity government has been formed. I believe some of the discord and division in israel perhaps creatively Fertile Ground for this invasion, and i call attention to my american colleagues that we are facing a precarious time for the same reason. This function, discord, division creates those very opportunities for our adversaries to take advantage of, so im pleased by that. I also want to remind people that we have a responsibility to push the saudis and israelis together, do not let iran, and its proxies, hamas, hezbollah, when, because what they really want is both the slaughter of human beings, but also to prevent peace. This is their response to a peace initiative, so we should redouble our efforts, all like minded nations of the world, to push for israeli and saudi normalisation and ensure that human beings become the winners in the long run. In the long run. Congressmen dean phillips, in the long run. Congressmen dean phillips, we in the long run. Congressmen dean phillips, we will in the long run. Congressmen dean phillips, we will leave. Dean phillips, we will leave you there for now, thanks for joining us. Around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. Lets return now to the israel gaza war, and violence has also expanded to israels border with lebanon. We can have a look at those live pictures from gaza, where it is just approaching 20 past five in the morning. Israel says it has reinforced its Northern Area with thousands of extra troops, after the powerful Armed Lebanese group, hezbollah, fired missiles at an israeli army post, in retaliation for the deaths of three of its members in skirmishes this week. 0ur Correspondent anna foster has the latest from zar it, near the israel lebanon border. Over the last several days, there is real anxiety and concern here on the border, over another group that, like hamas, has been designated a Terrorist Organisation by the uk, the us and others and that is hezbollah. By the uk, the us and others, and that is hezbollah. Even this morning, an anti tank missile was fired across the border and israeli fighter jets responded by targeting hamas infrastructure in lebanon. Even in the last few hours, we spent time in a shelter as the sirens went off right along the border. There was a suggestion that there had been a new aerial infiltration from hezbollah across into israel, perhaps drones, perhaps gliders, but it was met with a real sense of nervousness and fear. The problem is if a new front opens up in this war here in the north of israel, it risks feeding some of those Deep Fissures that already exist in this region. Hezbollah is backed by iran, and something that starts to spread in The Middle East would ultimately reverberate around the world. Israel is believed to have identified most of the 100 to 150 hostages taken by hamas. 0ur Correspondent Caroline Hawley talked with some of theirfamilies. Twins, 0sher and michael, organised the Music Festival that became a massacre. 0sher is dead, michael missing. Their sister ausa still cant fathom whats happened. Family by family, the horrifying scale of saturdays atrocities is being revealed. At this stunned gathering of relatives and friends, 0sher s widow, who went to try and find him. Translation we thought j he was alive, we had hope, but finally i found our car and it was covered in blood. All of the front windows were shattered by bullet holes, everything covered in blood everything. The bodies of 260 people were found at the festival site. Some survived by playing dead, others, we still dont know exactly how many, were abducted. Karim giorno loves dancing, and went to the festival with a broken leg. She couldnt run from the gunmen and herfamily havent heard from her since saturday. The last time we talked to her, it was saturday morning, 08 42, Something Like that. She sent us a message to the family group in whatsapp and she told us, i love you and, if something will happen to me, know that i love you. Several agonising days on, esther is also waiting for news of her son 0had and 12 year old grandson ethan, kidnapped from their kibbutz. Translation i dont know if hes had any food, because hes being held captive by some madmen. I dont know if theyve fed him. I dont know if theyve given him enough clothes. It was cold yesterday. I dont know if they gave him a jacket. I am worried about my son, but he is big and can handle it. A small child cannot do that. Her Daughter In Law and granddaughters somehow escaped, when five gunmen stormed into their home. Inside my heart, im very hurt. Worried. I want to hope i want to be in hope. Esther yahalomy ending that report by our correspondent Caroline Hawley, there. At least 17 us citizens are missing since hamass attack on saturday. Among them is 35 year old sagui dekel chen. He disappeared after an attack on kibbutz nir oz, located just two miles from the gaza strip. The bbc s nomia iqbal spoke with saguis father, jonathan. The important part is that is how we know how many, many people, Notjust The Young Men who did that, but 88 year old grandmothers, and eight month old children, who dont have cell phones, were physically removed from their homes, torn from their loved ones, and transported into hiding places, we assume inside of gaza, by hamas, in a planned, organised way. He is missing that there is no other explanation. We have been told by the army, attempts to locate all of these bodies and they are not there. So the only reasonable explanation is that they were in some stage or another healthy, wounded or deceased, were taken into gaza. Has anyone been in touch with you, jonathan, and when i say anyone, i mean us authorities, israeli authorities, who are you in contact with to try and find out more information on him . I find out more information on him . , find out more information on him . , find out more information on him . , y,. , him . I can only speak for myself him . I can only speak for myself as him . I can only speak for myself. As a him . I can only speak for myself. As a family him . I can only speak for myself. As a family of. Him . I can only speak for| myself. As a family of one him . I can only speak for. Myself. As a family of one of the missing. But it is true, i know it to be true at least of the dozens of families in the qubits, there has been no direct contact i know of any kind of outreach, of the kibbutz, to inform us of anything, and as far as cd is concerned, he is a us citizen like me, and so as yesterday afternoon, the us embassy in israel and the Us State Department did reach out to contact me, just to inform me they are aware of the situation. They are aware of the situation. ,. ,. , situation. And you have this imminent situation. And you have this imminent ground situation. And you have this imminent Ground Operation | situation. And you have this imminent Ground Operation that will take place by the israeli troops, and is that a worry, given that this hasnt been resolved, and given that The Americans do not know where americans do not know where americans are, including your son, if it is the case that yourson son, if it is the case that your son is inside gaza . It is a nightmare your son is inside gaza . It is a Nightmare Scenario your son is inside gaza . It 3 a Nightmare Scenario and i dont have any answer for you. We are all heartbroken to begin with, and doubly heartbroken, because i am assuming that we all feel this way, notjust The Americans, the us hostages there, i dont think there were many doubters but there is a consensus now that hamas must be eradicated. What is the price we are going to pay . By the way, notjust in terms of the way, notjust in terms of the hostages, but we have been here before. Israeli soldiers will lose their lives and to be injured in a ground incursion, and these are the things that israels leadership and the army must contend with. Of course speaking with myself, what we have been asking for, i tried to end my limited ways appeal to the Israeli Government is that the welfare of the hostages should also be the highest priority. Jonathan speaking about his missing son. Thats all from us for now. Im caitriona perry. Ill be back in 30 minutes with the latest headlines. Stay with us here on bbc news. Hello. Some fresh autumn weather on the way. Chilly, even, for some of us in Northern Parts of the uk, but certainly nothing out of the ordinary. Its been so mild across many parts of the country so far this month. So were back to really where we should be, this time of the year. So this is whats happening on thursday. This is the air mass, the temperature of the atmosphere. So, still some warmth and humidity across the south. In fact, temporarily, thursday into friday, well see a resurgence of that warmth, as the Wind Direction changes temporarily from the southwest. But then, come saturday and sunday, its a northerly, and that autumn chill arrives, A Touch Of Frost across Northern Areas by night, even a little bit of wintriness across the scottish hills. So lets have a look at the forecast, then, through the early hours, really quite cloudy and wet across some southern parts of the uk, but to the north of that, its generally clear and chilly. In the glens of scotland, temperatures barely above freezing, but most of our northern towns and cities, around three to four degrees celsius. In the south, on the south coast, its still really quite mild, sort of remnants of that warmth leftover, but a lot of cloud during the day, little dribs and drabs of rain, and then i think across much of yorkshire, Northern Ireland, the bulk of scotland, a bright, if not sunny, day, just scattered, fairweather clouds, 13, 14, still 18 in the south. But then, come the evening, widespread heavy rain sweeps into many parts of england and wales, a really wet thursday night into friday, a really complicated weather map here. On the one hand, we have a Weather Front coming in, a low pressure from the south, then weve got a cold front coming in from the north. You can just about see it here. So i think, for a time, wet in the morning on friday, temporarily, that warmth, it literally clips the southeast, with temperatures up to 20 in london, 19 in norwich, but the colder autumn air arrives in scotland, Northern Ireland and northern england, as well. So its a northerly, temporarily a northerly, but then into next week, High Pressure builds and were right in the middle in the centre of this area of High Pressure, so that means the winds will be generally light, therell be a lot of sunshine around, so its going to feel very, very pleasant indeed. I think, a lot of crisp autumn sunshine on the way. Thats it for me. Bye bye. This is bbc news. We will have the headlines for you at the top of the hour, which is straight after this programme. Farewell to mother. She sighs an act of defiance, rage and anger reflected in the daughters grieving eyes. One of the Iconic Images that shed light on the brutal crackdown on iranian protests
