The death toll is rising the Israeli Military says they have now recovered at least 1,200 People Killed in israel this past weekend. And in the five Day Bombardment of gaza, already more than 1,000 palestinians have died. Today the un called on all sides to respect civilians, and requested that a humanitarian corridor be set up in gaza to get food in and to evacuate the most seriously injured. Well hear from our correspondents across the region. From Lucy Williamson who has been to the town of 0fakim, where they have been burying their dead. From gaza, our correspondent rushdi abu alouf. And anna foster is on israels northern border with lebanon, where israel has been exchanging fire today with hezbollah militants. Good evening. There are 300,000 israeli troops now massed on israels Southern Border. Theres a new unity government in tel aviv and a war cabinet to direct israels response. Explosions. For the fifth day running, and from the direction of sderot, in the south, the Israeli Defence force has pounded every conceivable hamas target, in readiness for a Ground Invasion that is surely coming. 0vernight, 200 targets were hit. The Health Ministry in gaza says more than a thousand people have been killed. And now, undersiege, gaza is running out of fuel. Today the power station closed, which limits the ability to pump clean water. The hospitals for now are running on generators and the two and half million palestinians in the strip, know that very soon, unless a corridor is opened, the biggest concern will be food. Lets hear from one resident in gaza. The electricity is off. Im not sure if theres any schools, like shelters, but the schools bombed too. Im scared, afraid, frightened. 0h the situation is very, very bad. Bombing everywhere. They bombed the house and the children and women and killed anyone. Here is just seizure and bombing. There is no water, no food. Blocked siege, as you hear, bombing now everywhere. Ifeeliam. I want to cry israel continues to retrieve bodies from the weekend. Israel continues to retrieve bodies from the weekend. Israel meanwhile says, that more than 1,200 israelis are now known to have been killed in the hamas attacks. Shock waves continue, after details revealed yesterday from the Kfar Aza Kibbutz one Military Commander said. It is not a war it is not a battlefield, it is simply a massacre. We begin our programme with this report from our correspondent Lucy Williamson the israeli town of 0fakim. Israels pain is being written onto gazas streets. Whole districts brought down in the aftershocks of this attack. Today, power ran out gazas only station crumbling under israels siege. Water, food and medicine could be next. They will become weapons of war. | translation ive lost my father, | my brother, my uncle, two cousins, two Otherfamily Members and my pregnant wife. Im the only survivor. With Israeli Forces massing at the borders, this man has already lost eight members of his family. In the israeli town of 0fakim near gaza, one neighbourhood is now known as the district of death. Those who stay on here live with the blood and bullet holes left behind after saturdays attack. These two film from their roof. As hamas militants came in, taking hostages and killing one resident outside the bomb shelter. This is where he was killed . The bullet holes in his house and car a reminder of how close he came. All the children were with me, and i gave everyone knives to protect themselves. 0n the lights, i turned off the air conditioning, so nobody would hear us. All the time, there was shooting around and bombing from all the sides. While hiding in the family safe room, he led his children in thejewish prayer for the dying. I thought he was dead and i was praying, and i started to say prayers from my head. And we pray Something Like this. He recounts a prayer. Something like this that nobody would hear us. The Foreign Secretary came to 0fakim today to hearfrom residents, the roar of his Anger Spilling out in response to media questions. We are living closel to inhuman people. And we are fighting and we will win. Are you considering British Military aid to israel and a humanitarian corridor . Im not going to speculate on what we might give. Im here to find out what we can give to israel. Minutes later, he was bundled towards a bomb shelter as sirens warned of an incoming rocket attack. And, as the number of dead on both sides rises, more dramatic stories of escape. These women trapped while militants battled soldiers on saturday. Along the gaza border, israel seems to be preparing for a major offensive. Its leaders haunted by the words of survivors where was the army . Where were the police . Israel stands on its sense of security. How much destruction will be needed to prove its ability to protect . Lucy williamson, bbc news, southern israel. That is the question, where was the army, where was a police . Where was a police . There will be a wide ranging investigation into the Security Failings this weekend. And while some of that inevitably will focus on the intelligence or lack of it the more troubling aspect of what unfolded is just how easy it was for hamas to penetrate Israeli Defences. The southern part of the country is separated from gaza by a 40 mile perimeter fence, six metres tall, beneath which there is an underground Concrete Barrier to stop Palestinians Tunneling beneath. Normally the palestinians are not allowed within 300m of that fence, there are israeli guard towers every 500 feet and it is fixed with hundreds of cameras, radars, sensors that provide the idf with an Early Warning system. On saturday, using commercial drones, hamas bombed the towers and the Communications Infrastructure to disrupt the israeli response. The first wave of hamas Fighters Paraglided over the fence as a second waved arriving on bikes, placed explosives along the fence. The bulldozers did the rest, allowing enough space for the bigger vehicles to drive through. That supposely, Impenetrable Fence was breached in 29 different positions. Where was the idf . To talk more i am joined by the ceo of the us think tank the foundation for defence of democracies, mark dubowitz. Mark has advised four us administrations on the perspective of the Israeli Government. Thats a good background of where you come at this from. Just so our audience knows. Pick up on what weve been talking about. That fence, which ive seen with my own eyesis fence, which ive seen with my own eyes is supposed to be impenetrable. It was cut in 29 places. There are guard towers every 500 feet. Where on earth was the idea of . I guard towers every 500 feet. Where on earth was the idea of . On earth was the idea of . I think no fence is impregnable on earth was the idea of . I think no fence is impregnable for on earth was the idea of . I think no fence is impregnable for them fence is impregnable for them especially against a Terrorist Organisation which is been trained in webinars by iran. I think there was truly a failure of technology but also a conception. I think is real, uk and the United States, egypt, many countries around the world had wrongly believed that hamas for the added Stage Operations against there was a believed they had responsibility of 2 million palestinians to govern and they wouldnt launch this kind of operation and put their own citizens in harms way. Operation and put their own citizens in harms way in harms way. People have asked, particularly in harms way. People have asked, particularly the in harms way. People have asked, particularly the families in harms way. People have asked, particularly the families of particularly the families of hostages taken whether the encouragement that the right wing government in tel aviv gave to settlers in the west bank and the reprisals and reaction a game from the palestinians in response, whether that isnt directly to blame for the lack of Troop Numbers on the gaza border this weekend for them a lot of the speculation is those troops that would ordinarily there would be moved to the west bank. At the internal divisions in the parasitic of other partly to blame for this . I parasitic of other partly to blame for this . ,. Parasitic of other partly to blame for this . ~. ,. , for this . I think internal division is an issue for this . I think internal division is an issue. More for this . I think internal division is an issue. More importantly i for this . I think internal division is an issue. More importantly is| is an issue. More importantly is iran has had a long standing strategy of surrounding israel with a ring of fire on every borderfor the moving weapons and fighters to every border. They have over the past year it lit up the west bank through hamas in islamicjihad which would threaten the Palestinian Authority and also israel is inside the west bank. They were a number of major Terrorist Attacks emanating, hitting places like tel aviv and elsewhere. The idea was to force to move troops from the gaza border to the west bank to counter hamas and his like it she had again who have been rainy and trained and webinars. That left a great vulnerability and gap in the Southern Border and we see the results. fin gap in the Southern Border and we see the results. See the results. On the issue of iran, i see the results. On the issue of lran. I know see the results. On the issue of iran, i know you see the results. On the issue of iran, i know you speak see the results. On the issue of iran, i know you speak to see the results. On the issue of iran, i know you speak to a see the results. On the issue of iran, i know you speak to a lot l iran, i know you speak to a lot of intelligence officials for that there is a senior israeli official im quoting saying tonight that iran was aware of the operation, effectively gave the green light to hamas attacks. With the reporting from the Wall Streetjournal there was a meeting between Iranian Security and journals and beirut last monday. Why is the white house falling over itself to say, we dont see any of that intelligence for that we had Jake Sullivan on today say we dont see the darts at this moment in time. I say we dont see the darts at this moment in time. I think President Biden has been moment in time. I think President Biden has been terrific moment in time. I think President Biden has been terrific in moment in time. I think President Biden has been terrific in terms i biden has been terrific in terms of providing unwavering support against this kind of vicious terrorism emanating from hamas. I think hes below to pull of drawing a direct finger at iran. To do so would be to admit the failure not only by the iran policy of the 0bama administration. I think theres a lot of politics taking place in washington. Republicans are hammering the president on this issue. Is hammering the president on this issue. ,. ,. , , issue. Is it ust that . Obviously, if he says issue. Is itjust that . Obviously, if he says yes. Issue. Is itjust that . Obviously, if he says yes, there issue. Is itjust that . Obviously, if he says yes, there was issue. Is itjust that . Obviously, if he says yes, there was that i if he says yes, there was that demands a response from the Israeli Government. And clearly that would then Shine A Light and put the focus on his brother because his way up the proxy in the region and the best arm. And presumably what they are terrified of is this going beyond israels borders into neighbouring countries, which it has the potential to do. I countries, which it has the potential to do. Countries, which it has the potential to do. I think its the apposite. Potential to do. I think its the opposite, actually. Potential to do. I think its the opposite, actually. The i potential to do. I think its the opposite, actually. The white | potential to do. I think its the i opposite, actually. The white house were to Explicity Point the finger at iran and make it clean did not clear that if he lights up the northern border with his brother the United States will respond, i think thatis United States will respond, i think that is a way to de escalate. To prevent his brother from jumping that is a way to de escalate. To prevent his brotherfrom jumping out and lighting up the northern border. I think the white house and the reluctance to explicitly mention iran may in the end lead to a result that both President Biden and Jake Sullivan dont want to see. The Defence Minister sullivan dont want to see. The Defence Minister said today said gaza will never return to what it was. What does he mean by that . I was. What does he mean by that . I think the israelis have now made a decision that they want to end the rule of hamas in gaza. Under hamas not only had israelis suffered terribly but palestinians have suffered terribly. Theyve massacred it israeli civilians, they lose their own civilians as human shields. I think its a decision made. I think by the way that decision is supported by the United States, egypt, gulf countries, i think there is a growing recognition that the savagery of the Terrorist Attacks that we saw over the past few days and israel has to end the rule of hamas both for israelis and palestinians and the broader. If youre standing there and to Decapitate Hamas who do you get the keys to . I Decapitate Hamas who do you get the ke s to . , Decapitate Hamas who do you get the ke sto . ~ , i, keys to . I think you give the keys to hepefully keys to . I think you give the keys to hepefully a keys to . I think you give the keys to hopefully a responsible, i to hopefully a responsible, paradigmatic palestinian leadership. You have to remember, hamas took over gaza after israel went through every soldier, civilian and grave, they took over and went taking over it was a vicious Palestinian Civil War they executed members of their own. They threw them from buildings. They shot them in kneecaps. A more pragmatic palestinian leadership has to take over. I think that has to do it in cooperation with the egyptians and gulp, the United States, hopefully the uk and others. We have to end finally after decades of hamas terrorism, vicious terrorism we have to end the rule notjust for israels sake but for the sake of peace in the middle east, which i think is everything were looking for. ,. ,. , think is everything were looking for,. ,. ,. , think is everything were looking for. ~. , for. Secretary of state antony l Blinken Is En Route to tel aviv, coming with them is that Deputy Special Envoy for Special Affairs who im sure you are aware of or no. What does he bring to the discussions in tel aviv . How much involvement would be given . I think were talking about 17 americans missing tonight. How important is it for the administration to recover those hostages and is there a risk that this puts a wedge between israeli and American Government because it gives hamas leverage over washington . I because it gives hamas leverage over washington . Washington . I think there are shared interest between washington . I think there are shared interest between the washington . I think there are shared interest between the united washington . I think there are shared interest between the United States i interest between the United States and israel, obviously get the people back. Israel has vast experience, trying to get hostages back on the israels been willing to trade 1000 palestinian terrorists are one israeli soldier. The United States has a lot of experience in negotiation. Im not optimistic, i have to say, its tragic, i dont see many of those hostages coming back. But i think theres an attempt to try and find a way perhaps to get women and children and disabled old people for the i dont know, hamas is ruthless and brutal. And certainly has made it clear theyre going to execute these hostages. 0ne going to execute these hostages. One of the final point, a lot of people have been asking what about palestinians, where can i go . There is the Border Crossing to egypt. This vast open territory which is part of egypt. I would hope to see the egyptians opening the border, refugees going, Palestinian Refugees going to sinai. And the five countries that provided the most support to hamas Funding A Weapon isaac them, iran, 0a, algeria should be asked by the International Community to take these Palestinian Refugees and provide them safe haven for the palestinians have a place to go and not to the egyptian border to the five countries that have weapon eyes hamas and been used against them. ~. ,. ,. , them. He has since been retrieved and is now back in prison. He has since been retrieved and is now back in prison. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Israel is believed to have identified most of the hostages that the hamas gunmen abducted, and taken back across the frontier into gaza. The times of israel, quoting army radio, says officials have been breaking the terrible news to scores of families throughout the day. Israels ambassador to the united nations, says the number of hostages seized is between 100 and 150. In the last few minutes as weve been reporting the turkish president and his government are part of those negotiations with hamas trying to secure their release. Lets speak now to rachel goldberg, whos 23 year old son hersh is believed to have been among those taken hostage on saturday morning at the nova Music Festival. Im very gratefulfor im very grateful for your time this evening. 0ursympathies from im very grateful for your time this evening. 0ur Sympathies from all of us here to you and everything youre going through at the moment. What do you want to hear from the Israeli Government . Whereabouts . No. What do you want to hear from the Israeli Government . To l hear from the Israeli Government . Trr be honest, i. My son happens to be american and is rotary. And it israeli. I would like both of those governments to do their very best to bring my son home as soon as possible, obviously as every Single Person who has a loved ones there. The most immediate personal, urgent needin the most immediate personal, urgent need in our case is that our son was in a bomb shelter that he and friends ran to from the Music Festival where they were anti terrorists entered bomb shelter and through in Hand Grenades and sprayed the room with Machine Gun Fire and his left arm was blown off, we know that from three eyewitness accounts. He was able still to walk and they said anyone who can walk it out. Anyone who can walk get out. Its a little fuzzy, we think him and four others were able to walk out of the bomb shelter and were put on a Pick Up Truck and the last location of his cell phone was at the gaza border. So our issue is that he has been critically wounded and we feel he needs Urgent Medical attention. And so thats our biggest concern. We cant wait, we need him to be treated, be evacuated, he is a critically wounded civilian who could bleed out, you could get sepsis. Its obviously not a good situation. And thats what were most frightened about for our son. Rachel, im so sorry. Thats really awful to hear. What do you do with your day in a situation like this . 0h, we have been surrounded around the clock from when we heard and had suspicions that something terrible had happened and that we got the confirmation that he was at this huge festival and we started seeing pictures of what was happening there. We have been surrounded by an Incredible Group of the most supportive, savvy, brilliant motivated community of friends who have been helping us from the get go trying to locate where he is. Rule out where he isnt. We had friends go to hospitals and go through unidentified bodies to make sure that he was not there. We contacted all of the Kibbutz Community on the border that many people were taking refuge in, we knew he wasnt there. We finally got a picture of the bomb shelter he was in, one of the young people before the real firefight happened took a picture and sent it to social media and we were able to find him and his best friend whose name is on in that picture. All these friends who were helping us, we went through the picture and there were about 30 people in that, smashed into the small cement bomb shelter. We were able to identify a lot of the people and get their Phone Numbers and try to reach them and try to reach their parents. And start to piece together what had happened and start to understand where hersh was. I spend my days on telephone, were constantly trying to reach out in every different way to reach out in every different way to do whatever we can to save our son. To do whatever we can to save our son,. , f, to do whatever we can to save our son. , z ,. , to do whatever we can to save our son. ;~, , ,. , son. Yeah. 30 seconds before we go to break. Son.
