The hamas fighters broke through the border fence from gaza at these points marked in green, and then reached these areas in red. Israel says 700 of its citizens have been killed, with many others taken hostage. Israel has compared it to the 9 11 attacks and in retaliation, its launched a wave of air strikes on gaza, where nearly 500 palestinians have died. Live now to my colleague anna foster, whos in ashkelon, close to the gaza border. We are only a few kilometres from the border and i can hear an israeli plane overhead and the regular sound of explosions, which have continued notjust of explosions, which have continued not just through the of explosions, which have continued notjust through the night but through the morning. We were in ashkelon this morning as people they are dived for cover, the Commander A Barrage of missiles that had been fired in from gaza. It is something the people here are used to, but sites like this feel very different. You can see Israeli Military vehicle is starting to mass here ahead of a potential ground operation. Nobody knows whether they are here for security or whether they are preparing to attack but for people here, there is a real sense of nervousness. Can also possibly here in the background, the sound of loud pumping music. Some israelis have brought a vehicle, they have decorated it, they are flying the flag and they are sending the music presumably across to the troops who are on The Other Side of this field. It is an enormously tense time for people here in southern israel and in gaza. A middle east correspondent Yolande Knell has the latest. The heavy bombardment continues. Volleys of palestinian rockets being fired from gaza. And israel is hitting back hard, saying hamas will pay the price for its Surprise Attack. The most deadly day the country has ever known. Yolande knell, bbc news, tel aviv. For israel, part of the trauma of these Surprise Attacks is that many of its citizens have been taken hostage. Perhaps as many as 130. 300,000 reservists have been drafted into the Israeli Military, in possible preparation for a Ground Offensive on gaza to try to free those hostages taken back there. Questions growing about why Israeli Intelligence didnt know these attacks were being planned and failed to stop them. Heres our security correspondent, gordon corera. A Music Festival in the desert that turned into a scene of slaughter. As many as 260 people are thought to have been killed here on saturday morning, and some others taken. This footage shows a hamas gunman who appears to lead away a hostage. The exact number of hostages seized across israel is unknown, but estimates put it at around 100. Amongst them are thought to be ada, thought to have been taken from a kibbutz on saturday, as her son told the bbc. Our understanding is that she is kidnapped. You know, we didnt identify her yet on The Other Side, and no one contacted us to say, hey, we have your mum, lets talk. That didnt happen. Hamas headquarters in gaza has already been destroyed by israel, but the hostages will have been dispersed in tunnels and hideouts. They are an important bargaining chip. In the past, theyve been used to negotiate the freeing of hamas prisoners from jails, and their presence may also complicate Israeli Military plans. Israeli tanks have been massing near gaza, reservists called up. And now the question is whether Israeli Forces will enter the Densely Populated territory. We are already seeing a massive israeli response to this attack. I think we will see more over the coming days. There will be a big question around a Ground Invasion of the gaza strip. That would, of course, be incredibly costly, probably very bloody. The number of hostages in gaza makes a Special Forces raid to free them near impossible. And it would require the type of intelligence that israel seemed to lack when it was caught by surprise, leaving fewer options. Gordon corera, bbc news. In a moment well speak to our North America correspondent, nomia iqbal, in washington, but first to jon donnison our correspondent injerusalem. We have been able to hear them, even as i am presenting the programme today, you can hear the sound of air strikes continuing on gaza as they have been for the last few hours, whats the latest you are hearing . I whats the latest you are hearing . I think the sense here is that israels offensive in gaza is only just beginning. It carried out strikes on more than 500 hamas targets overnight it says and then around lunchtime, the last years, air strikes have again intensified. Palestinian Health Officials say at least 15 people were killed in a strike on the Densely Populated refugee camp in the north of the gaza strip. Meanwhile israels Defence Minister has ordered a complete blockade of the territory, saying no food, no water, no electricity must pass in, and the un says that 120,000 people from gaza have been displaced with many seeking shelter in un schools. Meanwhile, more than two days after that unprecedented attack by hamas, the border area around where you are, according to israeli officials, is still not completely secure. An Israeli Military spokesman said they had now taken back full control of israeli communities in Southern Israeli Communities in southern israel which had been attacked by hamas but he said that some hamas militants may still be at large. The detail on policies wasnt there, but i think there was an attempt to communicate to the public that she will be an iron chancellor who will hammer down on unnecessary spending and be off on taxes too. She sort of looked toward some changes in the Global Economy where people make things closer to where they are rather than buying them from east asia, but where those changes have happened around the world, you tend to have got more borrowing to support the economy. She didnt sort of confirms that there would be more borrowing. The most extraordinary thing, which we havent seen before, was the endorsement from former bank of England Governor Mark carney, who went out of his way to say he supported her approach. We havent seen that before from the Bank Of England governor quite so candidly. Thank you very much. The governments controversial plan to send some Asylum Seekers to rwanda will be scrutinised by the Supreme Court today. Back injune, the Court Of Appeal ruled that rwanda could not be considered a safe third country to send people to. But now the Supreme Court is hearing the governments appeal against that ruling. Our home and Legal Correspondent Dominic Casciani is at the Supreme Court for us now. Dominic, explain the significance of whats happening there this week . Quite simply, this is make or break for the government. We have a situation where the Court Of Appeal has blocked the rwanda plan, saying that the legal test the Home Secretary effectively went through to decide if rwanda was a safe country to send people was completely flawed because there was a risk that migrants could be sent from there back to their Home Countries and there face persecution, torture, Inhumane Treatment or worse. That is the key issue at the heart of this today. Today, this morning, the governments lead lawyer told the five justices here at the Supreme Court there is every reason to conclude that rwanda will want this set of arrangements to work. There is no flaw in the Home Secretarys analysis that this deal is safe and lawful and can be made to work. And there is every incentive on rwanda to comply. He went some of the issues. He said there was independent monitoring in place, so anyone who is sent to the country, basically their treatment will be tracked in the months that follow. There will be unofficial on the ground to try and deal with problems as they emerge. There will be reports the government. He said there was nothing conceivably to suggest that people would be ill treated or would be sent back to their Home Countries. The Critical Question is, can the government when . If it doesnt, the policy is deadin when . If it doesnt, the policy is dead in the water. If it does, we are into a Ticking Clock as to when the first flight could leave the uk. Back to you. About 17,500 women in Northern Ireland are to have their smear tests re checked as part of a major review of Cervical Screening Dating back to 2008. It follows a highly critical report by the Royal College of pathologists. Lets get the latest ont his from our ireland correspondent, chris page, whos in belfast. This major review affects women who had Cervical Smear Test between 2008 and 2021, carried out by the Southern Health trust, which is based in craigavon in county armagh. The medical director of the trust has already apologised for what he said was the stress and anxiety caused to thousands of families. That very critical report by experts from the Royal College of pathologists found that several staff working on the Southern Trust Cervical Screening Programme were underperforming, and that action taken by management was inadequate over many years. The college found that a majority of negative results issued by the Southern Trust laboratory were correct, but a significant number of these would likely have been identified as potentially abnormal if they had been carried out by other laboratories. It is understood the trust is in contact with the family of a woman who recently died from cervical cancer, and with another woman who is now receiving palliative care. The Northern Ireland parliament have said what has happened is clearly unacceptable, that the women should be reassured that the Cervical Screening Programme across Northern Ireland is effective. The women affected by this review will find out by letter, arriving by tomorrow morning. Chris, thank you very much. Metro bank has struck a deal with investors to shore up its finances. It has raised £325 million in new funding, and refinanced £600 million of debt, in a move the lender says will secure its future. Shares in the bank plunged last week amid concerns over its balance sheet. Our business correspondent, theo leggett, has more. It opened with a fanfare in 2010. Metro bank was the first new lender to hit the high street in more than 100 years. It promised a new approach, with branches open seven days a week, free biscuits for customers dogs, and lollies for the kids. It was popular with customers and investors. But then the shine came off. An Accounting Scandal revealed in 2019 helped to send its share price tumbling, while losses mounted up. Its struggled to recover ever since. The Accounting Scandal of 2019 caused investors to lose confidence in managements ability to run the bank. Investors argued that if management cant be trusted to produce the accounts properly, can they really be trusted to run a complicated business like banking . Matters came to a head last week amid reports metro bank urgently needed to raise hundreds of millions of pounds. Its share price plummeted once again. But now it has the money it needs after agreeing a major new funding package. Metro bank set out to do things differently to other banks. For example, by concentrating on having lots of branches and doing Business Face To face when its rivals were closing down branches and concentrating on online services, which are cheaper. Its fundraising means it has now bought itself more time to prove that its Business Model can work and hopefully win back the confidence of investors. People people banking. Its banking by people who get people. So metro bank now has another chance to sell its peoples Banking Model to the people. But the question now is whether it can make the numbers add up. A hoard of coins thought to be around 330 years old has been found, hidden under a stone fireplace in glencoe in western scotland. They are believed to have belonged to a Highland Clan Chief who was murdered in the Glencoe Massacre. Our scotland correspondent, alexandra mackenzie, has more details. 36 silver and bronze coins dating from the late 1500s to the 1680s. They were found in glencoe by an Archaeology Student on her very first dig. After removing it from the floor, the dirt shifted inside, so you could see some coins. You couldnt see how many or what they were. You just saw the glimmer in the sun. Then the magnitude of the discovery began to dawn on her. It was kind ofjust blank. You just had the excitement, and you were shaking a little bit, because you realised what you had in your hands, and that you were the first one to touch it in quite a while. Its thought that the coins were hidden for safekeeping in the clan chiefs summerhouse during the Glencoe Massacre of 1692. Whats really important about this, and the kind of human story that we can tell from this, is that whoever buried it clearly didnt return to recover it, and so we can suggest that they probably died as a result of the massacre, whether it be by Direct Action or by the kind of flight over the hill passes in that kind of snowy blizzard. Its believed the coins were less about currency and more of a precious status symbol. It would be very interesting to know how they did show them off. Obviously, buried under the fireplace, its the totally opposite idea, but its interesting that three of them have got little piercings in them. And they were old. They are old now, obviously, but even then, some of them were 100 years old, so its like this really quite grand collection. And these ones with a hole in, thats so that you can hang them round your neck. The team said this was the first major excavation of the scattered rocks in glencoe. The discovery has revealed a little of the secrets held by these mountains for generations. Alexandra mackenzie, bbc news. Lets return to our top story now and get the latest from our chief international correspondent, lyse doucet, injerusalem and our correspondent anna foster whos in ashkelon, near the border with gaza. Anna, first of all to you. Two days after the Surprise Attack by hamas fighters that has left some 700 israelis dead, there must still be a real sense of shock there where you are in southern israel. There is, ben, and this is something that people here, many of them have not seen something of this size and scale in living memory. They knew that their skies were not safe. People who live in the Southern Israeli Communities are used to missiles being fired from gaza, used to the sound of them exploding in the sky, used to be in close enough to gaza to hear when the idf respond with their own air strikes, but they were used to their land being said, not used to people breaking through the fence. They have never before had to process something on the scale of a massacre of young people at a Music Festival, dancing, enjoying themselves, cut down by hamas militants breaking through onto israeli soil in this way, and it has generated a huge amount of fear and uncertainty in people. They are asking questions of their leadership, asking why the Israeli Intelligence services didnt know this was going to happen and didnt stop it. The fear here is palpable, ben. Anna, thank you very much indeed. As i say, 700 israelis dead and more than 500 palestinians dead in gaza after israeli retaliatory strikes. Lets go to lyse injerusalem for us. They broke through it and they are still breaking through today in the areas where they breached it. That is where they breached it. That is where they breached it. That is where the focus is now.
