The Gaza Ministry of health has said 370 palestinians have been killed by israeli airstrikes in gaza. That is including 78 children. The israeli army also says more than 400 Palestinian Militants have been killed after infiltrating Southern Israel, with dozens more captured. Israel says it is still trying to regain full control of eight areas where hamas militants infiltrated following saturdays attack. The number of israeli civilians and soldiers taken hostage has been put at 100 by the Israeli Embassy to the us, though some have been freed. In northern israel, hezbollah rockets targeted three military positions, with israel responding with barrages of artillery into Southern Lebanon. The Un Security Council will meet later on sunday. They are getting under way now. President biden has vowed Rock Solid Support for israel. Israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said hes spoken again to President Biden and says he has again emphasised the uss full support. We will be going to new york a little later in the programme to find out exactly what comes out of the meeting. 0ur middle east correspondent Yolande Knell has the latest i should warn you her report has some distressing images. A devastating bombardment. Israel promised overnight that hamas would pay the price for its unprecedented Surprise Attack. And in gaza, this was the result. What happened to us is complete destruction. And there are 150 people at this building. We cant live there now. But today in israel, more gunfights as Israeli Security forces pursued some of the armed palestinians who infiltrated a day ago here. They chased militants in a stolen car and killed them. And here, the shocking result of the earlier mass assault. The bodies of an israeli family shot dead, waiting to be taken for identification and burial. Over here, youve got another one of the body bags that, disturbingly enough, you can find along the roadsides of Southern Israel right now. Here, were not very far from an Israeli Military base that was overrun by hamas militants and has since been recaptured. Its now known that among the dead, there was a 20 year old british man, nathanel young. Hed signed up to serve as a soldier in israel. Nathanel always had strong jewish pride, his brother said in a statement. From a young age, hed always wanted to play an Important Role in defending his country. Its something hed talked about a lot. But for many, the fate of their loved ones is still unknown. Outside the main hospital in ashkelon, Rachel Ezra Berated a visiting mp. I want you to help me find my boy. Oz and his girlfriend naomi, aged 2a and 23. She tells him, distraught. This hospital has been overwhelmed, treating some 400 people, soldiers and civilians. Some shot, some injured with the continuing rocket fire. It was very difficult for us. A lot of casualties have been brought. 0ne after one. Very quickly. There was a reminder today of the potential for this conflict to widen. The Israeli Military carried out artillery strikes in Southern Lebanon after mortars were fired towards israeli positions. But gaza is still the main focus. Its believed dozens of israeli hostages, including Women And Children, are now being held there. We will not forget. Hamas terrorists target israeli civilians. Israel will target hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists wherever they will be in gaza. And for israelis and palestinians, there are worrying signs of a long war ahead. Yolande knell, bbc news, ashkelon. 0ur correspondent anna foster has the latest developments from ashkelon. Behind me, these Flashing Lights are where the road was closed off. This has been almost a Staging Ground in the last few hours. We watched ambulances coming in and helicopters landing on the road. It looked like casualties are coming out of the area. It looks like the skies have been regularly lighting up in the last few hours, there has been a regular barrage of missiles being fired out from gaza and when they come, you see these Points Of Light Shooting into the sky, the missile is intercepted by israels iron dome system, which really catches most of the missiles are coming, but the sound when that happens, its a really sort of loud boom that you feel shaking all the way through your body and sometimes, people around herejump where your body and sometimes, people around here jump where that is. People around here are used to it now. Also worth mentioning is the amount of Israeli Military and equipment and hardware moving into the area at the moment. Lots of tanks coming into Southern Israel. We know one of the priorities for the idf was securing the sudden israeli communities after they were infiltrated by hamas militants after they broke through the fence yesterday. The question is what they feel they will do after they secure the area. You can see all the time what is going on. You can see probably blushes in the background. I can hear a plane going bad. Sometimes you get the sound of a drone, as well, they are distinctively different. You can hear the plane shooting over, the drone is a sort of consistent whining sound, you can hear the booms that are going on, it has been constant actually, lewis, the last few hours and it shows you that there is conflict, as it is, but certainly the escalation that we have seen the last 48 hours or so it is really an early indication, i would say, of what is likely to happen in the next few days and potentially the next few weeks. find potentially the next few weeks. And anna, ust potentially the next few weeks. And anna, just talk us through, roughly, if you can, just give us a sense of the geography of how far you are from gaza and other key points around you. Does it is less than ten kilometres around you. Does it is less than ten kilometres over here. Around you. Does it is less than ten kilometres over here. Sometimes, | kilometres over here. Sometimes, when you are seeing those flashes that you will occasionally get on the horizon there, gaza is really close and that is something that the Southern Israeli communities have been dealing with, living with for quite a long time. These missile attacks, which we are seeing an awful lot of yesterday and today, they are a regular feature of life here. Certainly, when you go down the coast, we are down in style ashkelon, but if you go further, we are in sderot and you are on the gaza strip. These two areas really do rub shoulder to shoulder and perhaps this is one of the reasons why hamas were able to carry out what was a Surprise Attack yesterday morning. The increasing tension as no surprise. They that way they were able to break through the fence, infiltrate using paragliders and by sea with very little warning from the Israeli Security services that this was likely to happen, and from the us as well, of course, which is one of israels big allies, novae seem to know that this large scale attack was about to happen and this along with the shock that is happening here at the moment, stun community. It is difficult to know, we have been talking about this| we have been talking about this potential Israeli Ground incursion into gaza because that is something thatis into gaza because that is something that is crucial, really. When we saw the israeli by minister Benjamin Netanyahu talking in the hours after the attacks yesterday, he promised a substantial response from israel and that would certainly take the form of a ground operation. Of course, you have a lot of civilians, Palestinian Civilians in gaza as well as hamas militants that, it is of course is a place, it is very tightly packed. Its not a place that people can go out and escape. If you are palestinian, you live in gaza, israel controls the edge of the strip. It is difficult for people to move away from an operation that might be launched. Dont forget the hostages, the videos we saw on social media yesterday of hostages, israeli hostages taken by hamas militants and taken potentially back into gaza. That is something that is at play when the Israeli Defence forces are trying to decide how to respond to their snacks. If there are israeli civilians being held hostage in gaza and the belief is that is the case, perhaps as many as a hundred of them, but its enormously difficult to tell at this stage. All these things will have to be considered carefully as israel planned its next move. Thanks to anna for that. Its becoming increasingly likely that a significant number of those killed and captured by hamas were young people attending a Music Festival in the Southern Israeli desert. Social media pictures showed Hundreds Fleeing The Nova Festival Which was held near the small settlement of reim a kibbutz near the border with gaza as Caroline Hawley reports. We are going to take a look right now at what is going to be happening in the us, of course, the us as a key ally of israel. The us Secretary Of State Anthony Blinken has been talking to the american Sunday Morning shows about the attack on israel. Heres what he said to nbc s meet the press. This is the worst attack on israel since the Yom Kippur War in 1973, almost exactly 50 years ago. But theres also a big difference. That was a state on state conflict, army against army with clear front lines. This is a massive Terrorist Attack targeting israeli civilians, gunning people down in the streets of their towns, gunning them down in their homes, dragging israelis, men, Women And Children across the border with gaza. A Holocaust Survivor in a wheelchair. Women and children all being taken hostage. So you can imagine the impact this is having in israel and it should be revolting to people around the world. But, mr secretary, do you acknowledge that both Israeli Intelligence officials and Us Intelligence officials were caught off guard here . This is an attack that i dont think anyone saw coming in the immediate. So was it an Intelligence Failure, mr secretary . Do you acknowledge it was an Intelligence Failure . We will have plenty. We will have plenty of time, the israelis will have plenty of time to look into that, all of us will have time to look into that. The focus now has to be on making sure that israel has what it needs to deal with this attack. And at the same time, israel has come to us and asked for some specific additional assistance. Im sure youll hear more about that probably later today. And were responding to that and we have the ability to do that. Iran and hamas have a long relationship. Hamas wouldnt be hamas without the support its had from for many years from iran. In this moment, we dont have anything that shows us that iran was directly involved in this attack and planning it or carrying out. But thats something were looking at very carefully, and weve got to see where the facts lead. But we do know that irans had a long relationship with hamas, long support. Its one of the reasons that we have been aggressively working to counter iran, including sanctioning more than 400 iranians, more than 400 and companies, precisely for the things like the support its provided to hamas. Its no surprise that those who are opposed to the talks, those who are opposed to Israel Normalising its relations with its neighbors and with countries beyond the region are hamas, hezbollah and iran. And so its entirely possible that one of the motivations for this attack was to try to derail these efforts to advance normalization, something that is very hard. There are a lot of really challenging issues to work through. Were in the process of trying to do that. But the result would be if we were able to get there a much different path for the region and for the future, a path of greater stability, of greater integration. Of people working together to better their lives. That was the us Secretary Of State Antony Blinken now. Staying with the us because the Un Security Council will be meeting in about 40 minutes time also. And had a bit, the permanent representative of israel to the United Nations spoke to the media. As rockets rained down indiscriminately upon israeli towns and cities, hundreds of Hamas Terrorists infiltrated israel and began her barbaric programme of unparalleled magnitude. Ruthless terrorists gunned down innocent israeli civilians in the streets, murdering anything that moves. As the Security Council prepares to meet today, israel has one sole demand. Hamass war crimes must be unequivocally condemned. This unimaginable trustee must be condemned. Israel must be given steadfast support to defend ourselves, to defend the free world. Israel will not accept any false immoral comparisons between a savage terror group that targets innocents and the Democratic State of israel. Here in the uk, the Opposition Labour Party conference is taking place in liverpool. Luciana berger is there shes a former mp for liverpool whod stood down from the party in protest at the handling of antisemitism allegations four years ago. Shes now rejoined my colleague iain watson asked her what she made of the attacks in israel. The events that we saw unfold since yesterday very early in the morning in israel, with hamas breaking through and killing people in their homes, on the streets and bus stops, taking them hostage, absolutely barbaric scenes that we have seen in our National Media and things that arent being shown because they are too graphic that i have seen on social media, too. I was in israeljust a few short months ago, at one of the kibbutz, one of the communities that neighbours gaza, there are people there that are still under siege and i dont know if they are alive. So these are tragic, tragic and horrific, barbaric events. It is absolutely right, i think, that the labour party, like many parties and many leaders of parties, and people that are in charge, Prime Ministers of governments across the western world, have come out in condemnation of what has happened, have come out against hamas and have said its completely unacceptable and have rightly condemned these atrocities. The worst atrocities that israel has seen since the Yom Kippur War. In terms of the tone and what we have seen specifically from the labour party, sir keir starmer, along with his shadow foreign secretary, david lammy, have been unequivocal in their statements of condemnation. That is poles apart from what we have seen from the former leader of the labour party. He has made his own statements. He has not condemned the barbarism of those attacks. And frankly, his statements are appalling. He is here in liverpool, but he is at a different conference down the road. He is not here at the labour party conference. And i think that is particularly striking. And certainly here, i know not just from the leader and his shadow foreign secretary, but from all the front bench and shadow cabinet members, from mps, there is absolute and equivocation in calling out these atrocities that we have seen in the last 24 hours. The official Labour Party Policy is obviously in terms of sorting out the underlying problem and the underlying tension is to try and establish two states in the region. Absolutely. Within secure borders. Yes. The actions of hamas, i presume, have set that back and make that Policy Position of the Labour Party Even more difficult to achieve . Well, i think hamas has intentionally done what it has done at this very moment, particularly when israel was on the cusp of signing an unprecedented deal with saudi arabia to normalise relations, really significant for the region. We know that they are state sponsored anti semitism and terrorism that comes from iran, we have seen the reaction from iran, from members of parliament who are chanting in support of this action, who have lit fireworks and support. This in my view is very clearly where this has stemmed from. And in terms of what this means for the international community, it is going to be very, very difficult. You know, we are going to see loss of life, more tragedies unfold, notjust over the coming 24 hours but over the days and weeks ahead and i think for everyone, it has been very challenging. It is going to be incumbent on all the western world to come together to try do Everything Possible to support those people in the region. But in the wake of what we have just seen since yesterday morning, israel has every right to defend itself. No nation would accept what has happened and just sit down and roll over and not do anything. I think labour party been very clear in its policy, two states for two peoples, having safe and secure borders for israel alongside a just and viable palestinian state. I think that is really important. Ifa youre watching bbc news. Im Lewis Vaughan jones. A couple of bits are breaking im Lewis Vaughan jones. A couple of bits are Breaking News im Lewis Vaughan jones.
