The Israeli Military has also carried out Artillery Strikes in Southern Lebanon after mortars were fired from there towards israeli positions this morning. Some mortars that were fired from hezbollah in the north, we responded with artillery fire. And we hope they dont make the mistake of coming into the fight. Israeli tanks have moved along the border with lebanon as Tension Mounts between israel and lebanons powerful armed group hezbollah. The Israeli Military says it fired artillery into an area of lebanon where cross border fire was launched. You can see now exactly where the two countries live. Live to our middle east correspondent Quentin Somerville who is in kfarchouba on lebanons border with Southern Israel. Just bring us up to day with what we know has been happening around that border. This know has been happening around that border. ,. ,. , border. This morning, hezbollah tar eted border. This morning, hezbollah targeted the border. This morning, hezbollah targeted the israeli border. This morning, hezbollah targeted the israeli position border. This morning, hezbollah i targeted the israeli position behind me on the hill there, a radar station, Firing Mortars and missiles striking that. It sent a message, released a statement afterward staying that this attack was in solidarity with the palestinians. It was also very narrow and calibrated attack because hezbollah is one of the most effective militant organisations in the middle east. It has a huge arsenal of resources, can strike deep into israel, this was a very calibrated attack. It was carefully positioned not to lead to escalation. At least at this moment. Since then, we have heard from a senior hezbollah official saying they will not be neutral in this war. They said that the United States and israel must stop or the whole region will become involved. This is not going to stop because israel is saying it is planning a long war. A threat, really, spoken threat from hezbollah that there is a risk of them becoming further involved in the conflict. With all of that enormous arsenal they have if this conflict continues to escalate. If this conflict continues to escalate if this conflict continues to escalate. ,. , , escalate. They have, we know that they have a significant supply of long range missiles that can strike not just long range missiles that can strike notjust here at the border, not just at a small israeli radar station, but deep inside israel. Of course, israel will respond. And about 55 minutes ago, israel did respond. There was an Artillery Strike just here on the edge of the village. All day, we have heard israeli warplanes and drones in the air here. That is not unusual for this part of Southern Lebanon. You often hear them here. But it certainly is an escalation, and intentional escalation. There is anticipation, notjust here in Southern Lebanon, but all across the country. A worry that this country, thatis country. A worry that this country, that is already deeply troubled, in the middle of the financial crisis, doesnt have a president , desperately poor, has this overrunning economic crisis will face yet another crisis. Absolutely, its important face yet another crisis. Absolutely, its important to face yet another crisis. Absolutely, its important to underline face yet another crisis. Absolutely, its important to underline for face yet another crisis. In sorry, i lost you there, but i think you are pointing out that hezbollah, well it has great popularity in part is not universally applied. Many here will take a dim view of it dragging this country closer to conflict. A conflict they are not prepared for. While we have been here, the Un Peacekeeping force which for many years has been patrolling the border has being keeping up its patrols. At the moment, we are talking about the situation here in Southern Lebanon and Northern Israel is being contained. The big question is, as the situation further south in israel and gaza escalate, hezbollah has made it very clear that it can escalate the situation also. How long will it be contain four . Thank ou ve long will it be contain four . Thank you very much long will it be contain four . Thank you very much for long will it be contain four . Thank you very much for bringing long will it be contain four . Thank you very much for bringing us you very much for bringing us up to date with whats happening on the border there with Southern Lebanon and israel. That could end p lebanon and israel. That could end up becoming some sort of problematic flashpoint for the israelis. That remains to be seen. We told you how the incursion into gaza was involving a festival. It was full of people celebrating the end of the festival. This is festivalgoers being kidnapped by what we believe our palestinians. We have neutered the faces of those being kidnapped, blurred out. We have permission of those kidnapped, theirfamilies are have permission of those kidnapped, their families are giving permission. We can see other people fleeing the festival, some getting into cars, others fleeing. We spoke earlier to an eyewitness from the attack. We did it but she told us that she herself tried to escape in a car and found a nearby orchard of trees and lay flat among the ground of those trees. Just to reiterate, the pictures coming into us at the bbc, of young people being kidnapped. There you have come a young girl on a motorbike with what we believe a palestinian militancy and driven away. Another man whose face we have played out led away by people who we believe are Palestinian Militants as well. These pictures, as always are coming in sporadically at the bbc. We try a to verify as much as we possibly can to bring them to you. Theres also news coming into us from the us. That is us Secretary Of State Antony Blinken making a few comments. We want to bring you. First of all, he says there have been reports of several americans have been killed in israel. He says the us is looking to verify these reports as soon as possible. He went on to say that the attack on israel was a Terrorist Attack on israel was a Terrorist Attack by a terrorist organisation. That is a line that has also been brought forward by President Biden as well who has offered his Rock Solid Support to israel. Antony blinken has also said that he is looking at requests made by israel and the us will make an announcement later on sunday. We are not sure what the request might be, but we can perhaps guess that they might be to do with us support for israel going forward. I want to show you some more pictures now. These are the latest coming into us. Video has emerged on social media appearing to show a Gun Battle Taking Place near the gaza border. A warning that this footage does contain distressing scenes. This incident, we considered to have taken place on sunday shows force exchanging fire on a road near gaza. This has been verified by bbc news and shows gun fighting Israeli Forces on the route for highway. Lets have a quick lesson. You can hear the heavy gunfire there, youre not sure how this encounter between the two sides ended. The pictures have been verified by the bbc verify. Theyve written a post for their live page explaining how they went about checking the video and working out where and when it was taken. At the bbc, for us, its important that in developing situations like this, we bring you pictures that have been verified. That we know are true. Theres been a lot of fake news around social media particularly. We are very careful about what we are bringing you. Let me just bring you these pictures from gaza. Where a mosque in khan younis is among buildings damaged. You can see that it has been, not a surly attack, but damaged in the attack. This is Al Ameen Mosque which was hit in an israeli strike this morning. There are copies of the koran scattered on the ground. We will leave those pictures now and bring you an update from gaza. I spoke to our reporter in gaza Rushdi Abualouf a short while ago. I asked him what he knew about the warnings to citizens in gaza to leave their homes. Yeah. We know that many families started to to move. But in the last 10 minutes, about 5 to 6 airstrikes just hit the area where the israelis warned residents to to leave. And thats, as we expected, the israeli air raid intensify in this area. The israeli army issued a small video directing people to leave this area and go to the city center. And they said we are going to attack hamas, a terrorist group that is attacking israel. Since last night, when israel launched this, a Retaliation Operation in gaza, many areas people were leaving. And we understand from sources in the un that as many as 22,000 people already left their homes and now they are taking shelter in a un school. We have seen this scenario before as gaza fought like four wars or hamas fought four wars with israel in the last 17 years. And gaza, the people in gaza, they dont have any shelter facilities. So people usually what they do, they go to the un school because they believe that you are in a school, is protected by the un. And nobody will hit them there. Also, we noticed that people are going to hospitals for the same reason. Since last night, until now, we understand from security sources that about 280 targets have been hit by by israel. Most of them are belong to hamas militants. They had tanks, they had military facilities, military infrastructure, even some police checkpoints, some police stations. A hamas bank was hit. Buildings, high buildings were hit this morning. I have been in the Gaza City Center where like 11 Storey Building was completely destroyed and razed to the ground. The main road for the Gaza Downtown was closed for about two or 3 hours. And the situation, the humanitarian situation seems to be getting worse and worse with the israel cutting 80 of the Electricity Supplies into gaza. And already most of the Internet Lines are not working since yesterday. Whats the feeling now amongst people who are in gaza who are trying to find shelter . How much fear is there of more to come from israel . Yes, of course. I mean, people have a mixed feeling about whats going on. Yesterday, there was some sense ofjoy. People were like celebrating, praising hamas fighters who in there, who the palestinians, majority of the palestinian in gaza believed that they were revenge by israel. The israeli action in the west bank, in Al Aqsa Mosque and also in gaza, they were like welcoming what hamas did. But in the other hand, today they started to feel the reality that its a war. And war, people in this poor, Densely Populated place, they knew well what what war would mean for them. Back in 2014, there was a war for about 50 days. And now with the Electricity Supplies not working, internet, israelshut all of the border around gaza and there is a fear of very soon we will have some sort of serious humanitarian crisis a food and medicine and electricity, like dont come to this 2. 3 Million People here. Yes. Can you just explain to viewers at home who may not understand the way that gaza city works, the israelis obviously dont control the city as such. However, they do control what goes in and out, including things like supplies and electricity, dont they . Yes, of course. We are talking about 360 kilometers square, gaza. Gaza in the wide is ten kilometers. The border with israel is about 3k kilometers along the israeli border. Israel has already pulled out of gaza like 20 years ago, but they still control and access goods and movement of people in and out of gaza. Since yesterday when hamas launched this big operation, they stopped everything. They closed the border and they stopped supplying gaza with the electricity needed. They stopped the crossings. So israel, in fact, is controlling whoever gets in and out of gaza. So people believe that as long as the fighting continue between hamas and israel, the humanitarian crisis will be greater and greater, especially because gaza has been already under like a tight blockade since like 17 years. I mean, the Health Care System has been struggling for a very long time. Ive been talking to the doctors this morning at the main hospital, in shifa hospital. They said that they are struggling to cope with the number of injured people. We are talking about 2,500 people injured, some of them in a very critical condition. They need Urgent Medical help. In the past, when the border is open, patients used to go to egypt, used to go to israel or west bank to be treated. But since the border is closed, access for everything is stopped. I want to just let you know that there is live pictures you are seeing on the screen are of gaza city. Of the area where gaza city meets the sea. You can see boats that have caught fire, burning, smoke billowing out from them and we believe they are Fishing Boats that belong to people in and around the area. The shelling from the idf has impacted various parts of gaza city we believe they are pictures coming into as of boats that have been hit, Fishing Boats have been hit specifically by the Israeli Defence forces. We are Hearing Stories of people being given video or text warnings from the idf before any kind of strike occurs. Many people moving themselves out of buildings that have been targeted and into other areas such as, for example, un schools and also our reporter that, as you heard, talking about people hiding in hospitals. Those live pictures coming it was here at the bbc of Fishing Boats on the coast just inside gaza city which have caught Fire Following shelling attacks by the idf. We have had Breaking News also coming into us here at the bbc with regards to a death of a british man. The family of Nathanial Young has confirmed that he has died following the attack by idf. By hamas. They have released a statement saying he was tragically killed on the gaza border yesterday. Funeral details to follow. The young family have posted that on their facebook page. Thats one british man that we know have that it might has died. There is another one that we know is missing, working as a Security Guard around the festival that we were talking about. Lets look a bit deeper into the why of what is happening. The attack was a huge surprise for israel and the world. I want to talk now. Joining us now is rami khouri senior Public Policy fellow at American University of beirut. Good to talk to you. Thank you for joining us. Let me ask you festival, the biggest element of this for many people including israelis was the surprise element. H0 people including israelis was the surprise element. Surprise element. No one was exoecting surprise element. No one was exoecting it surprise element. No one was exoecting it i surprise element. No one was expecting it. I think surprise element. No one was expecting it. I think the surprise element. No one was l expecting it. I think the surprise was not the hamas attack, but their scale, sophistication, number of deaths in israel, the number of people that were taken prisoner or kidnapped or hostage, whatever you want to call them. Prisoner of war is is properly a good term because this is a war. That was a surprise. It was notjust this is a war. That was a surprise. It was not just the fact they attacked. It shouldnt have been a surprise because israel has had a lot of experience with the lebanon border and hezbollah over the last 25 years. Hezbollah has become very sophisticated, very powerful and has forced israel into a deterrent truce ceasefire on the lebanese border. They shoot projectiles back and forth as i said this morning. In empty fields, basically. Just to say that they are doing something. But they are not going to fight between hezbollah and israel because both countries would suffer massively, and infrastructure devastation. Hamas is eve quality improving capabilities. The israeli should have recognised this. They have shipment facilities, training, manufacturing arms and all these things, they said they have destroyed it four or five times in the last 20 years, but they obviously havent destroyed them. Either their intelligence is not very good or the hamas are very sophisticated or some other reason, but the reality is what we seeing now. A very operation causing immense pain to israelis and serious damage to the doctrine that has defined the israeli confrontation with the palestinians for years, you keep beating them up and you keep the fight on their territory. That the fight on their territory. That the fight on their territory. That the fight doesnt happen in israel. That has changed now. The fighters in israel. And apparently there is still some fighting going on in Southern Israel in a few places today. Huge unprecedented situation that we dont how it will impact internal issues, palestinian issues, regional issues, international issues, but this is a moment of significant historical transformation. , i] transformation. What happens next . I have been in transformation. What happens next . I have been in journalism transformation. What happens next . I have been in journalism for transformation. What happens next . I have been in journalism for at transformation. What happens next . I have been in journalism for at least i have been injournalism for at least 55 years. One of the things ive learned is you dont try and predict the future. What you do try and do is learn from the past and what we have learned is when there is intense warfare, massive suffering on either or both sides, eventually, the International Community of the arab countries or other people stepping at least to get a ceasefire. I dont think that will be enough this time. The israelis are going to keep attacking gaza. Hamas, i think, are going to keep attacking gaza. Hamas, ithink, has not are going to keep attacking gaza. Hamas, i think, has not ended its attacks, i think there will be more attacks. Probably aim further north attacks. Probably aim further north at the tel aviv area, who knows. I think the ceasefire, when it comes, will probably be bleak as it has beenin will probably be bleak as it has been in the last two prisoner exchanges. Israel has thousands of palestinian prisoners, many of whom have not been tried, they are in administrative detention. They will be the usual things, but the usual things will not be enough. Because the underlying causes are not addressed and it will happen over and over again. This is really a moment that everybody to find a more effective way to stop this. Qm. Moment that everybody to find a more effective way to stop this. Effective way to stop this. Ok, good to talk to you effective way to stop this. Ok, good to talk to you. Thank effective way to stop this. Ok, good to talk to you. Thank you effective way to stop this. Ok, good to talk to you. Thank you very i effective way to stop this. Ok, good to talk to you. Thank you very much j to talk to you. Thank you very much indeed forjoining us from the university of beirut. Before i leave you, let me bring you some pictures that have come into us at the bbc. These are of the office building, high rise building yesterday. We saw various from various angles the building being bombed by the idf. This is the bbc, you could see for a few seconds one of our reporters there. From the bbc building, the angle from where we were filming from our bbc offices, very, very close to where that block of flats or offices was targeted. Important to know that idf did give prior warning that that building would be targeted. 0ne warning that that building would be targeted. One more time, you can just see, the sound of that bank you can see our bbc reporters there. We will leave you with these pictures. I am back in a few minutes im with moore in the developing story.
