And this is the only road in, which i think at this hour is closed down only four evacuations. We were able to gain access to the town late last night and what we saw can only be described as pure devastation. I spoke with one survivor who described the flames as burning so hot they appeared quite stop and those flames ripped through homes and ripped through hotels and businesses, destroying everything in their path. They appeared white. 36 people have died but there is concern that the number will only continue to grow as the days go on. The fire first began on tuesday afternoon and it quickly exploded because of Hurricane Force winds. We are talking of wind gusts up to 70 mph. Across the island there are a total of three wild fires still burning. In one miraculous story of 14 burning. In one miraculous story of ia people including two children, escaped the flames by actually running into the ocean. They were rescued eventually by the coastguard. The household products chain, which has about a00 stores, warned last week that it was on the brink of collapse in the face of mounting cash pressures. Our Business Correspondent peter ruddickjoins me. Its a lot of stores and an awful lot of employees. What happens now . Thats right, incredibly worrying afternoon now. In the short term, administrators when they are appointed are expected to say it is business as usual but the a00 or so stores continue to trade as normal but the reality is it has been far from normal at wilko for quite some time to stop in an emotional letter to the 12,000 or so Staff Members this morning, wilko Chief Executive said there had been Significant Interest from potential rescuers but given the amount of time and cash the company had at its disposal a dealjust hadnt been possible. But what that does suggest is administrators may be able to find a potential buyer for the business. The question is, how many stores, how many Staff Members could be saved . It seems unlikely this lunchtime that a deal for the whole of the business is possible. And of course, any buyer would be faced with the same problems wilko had in terms of being competitive on price and in terms of being in the view of some analysts located in the wrong locations, essentially to be a strong retailer at the moment. And there is a question too, if a buyer were to be found, whether the future of the brand would continue. If it were to disappear from the high street, it would be a sad end to a business which began with just one Hardware Store in leicester more than 90 years ago. Peter ruddick, thank you. Northern irelands Chief Constable has been facing questions from the board overseeing the police force, after the major data breach which saw the details of thousands of Police Officers and civilian staff accidentally made public. The mistake was blamed on human error and the information was taken down, but there are fears that it could be used by dissident republicans to mount new attacks. Sara girvin joins us from belfast. We expected to hear from the Chief Constable simon byrne, he cut a Family Holiday short to be here today. But three hours later he is still being questioned by politicians around these data breaches. Data breaches that have caused fear and concern to Police Officers here, and civilian staff. Being a police officer, to put it in context, anywhere in the world, it is a dangerous job. Context, anywhere in the world, it is a dangerousjob. But here in Northern Ireland, offices operate every day under a severe terrorist threat. The last attack by dissident republicans was just a few months ago in february when a Senior Police officer was shot and seriously injured after a football coaching session. Apologies have been made already by senior staff to rank and file officers, but will that be enough for the 10,000 people whose details have been put out there in public view . Today we heard from the police federation, which represents rank and file officers. They say that already hundreds of Police Officers have raised Safety Concerns with them. Some of them even work at Northern Ireland s m15 base, particularly sensitive intelligence roles. 0fficers we have spoken to in the last few days live their life under this threat. They are only too aware of the danger that theirjobs can bring. They are very aware already of security and safety, but they are angry over these past few days, and they are frustrated and want to know what will be done. They are listening very carefully to what senior staff are saying and they will want to hear exactly what the Chief Constable simon byrne has to say after this meeting, which has now been going on for more than three hours and counting. Now been going on for more than three hours and counting. Thank you, sara girvin the waiting list for Routine Hospital Treatment has hit a record high in england, topping 7. 5 Million People for the first time 3 million more than before the covid pandemic. It means nearly one in seven of the population is waiting for nhs treatments such as hip and knee operations. 0ur Health Correspondent jim reed reports. Its been a difficult few months for the nhs in england. Strikes led to more than 100,000 cancelled Hospital Appointments in june alone. Health bosses have been struggling to shift a backlog of treatment caused in part by the pandemic, though Waiting Lists were rising long before covid hit the uk. Andrew batty from North Yorkshire was told he needed a skin cancer removed in december last year, but is still waiting. Its very worrying. Im very scared, really. Everything you read says it is an easily treatable form of skin cancer as long as its treated early. And this, to me, it will be eight months later and that is not early treatment in my opinion. The latest figures for england show there are now 7. 6 Million People like andrew on the Waiting Lists for an nhs procedure or treatment. Of those, 383,000 have been waiting more than 12 months at the end ofjune. The government has pledged to eliminate those longer Waits By March Next year. And cancer targets are still being missed, with just 59 of patients starting treatment within two months, against a target of 85 . I cant stress how much for patients its important to have their treatment within the 62 days. We know that for every four weeks delay in cancer treatment, there can be an up to 10 increase in death rate. This is vital for patients. The nhs says this summer is likely to be its busiest ever, with Ambulance Services dealing with more calls injuly than in the middle of winter. The number turning up to a e has also been hitting record highs as the population grows larger and gets older. The government has now done a deal with some nhs unions to head off more strikes, but industrial action involving doctors will continue in england. Tomorrow sees another four day walk out from Thousands Ofjunior doctors, with no sign of a breakthrough in that long running pay dispute. Jim reed, bbc news. 0ur chief Political Correspondent Nick Eardleyjoins us from westminster. What does all of this mean in terms of the government and its pledges to bring down Waiting Lists . This of the government and its pledges to bring down Waiting Lists . Bring down Waiting Lists . This is bad news for bring down Waiting Lists . This is bad news for patients, bring down Waiting Lists . This is bad news for patients, i bring down Waiting Lists . This isj bad news for patients, i suspect bring down Waiting Lists . This is l bad news for patients, i suspect a lot of people will not find it that much of a surprise. But its a really big, Totemic Political Issue as well because as you say, rishi sunak promised at the start of the year to bring Waiting Lists down. It is undoubtedly bad news for number ten that things are going in the opposite direction, with these record high waiting list times. I have been chatting to people at number ten about how we interpret this. They say it is frustrating but they are trying to place a lot of they are trying to place a lot of the blame on the Strikesjim Reed was talking about, saying it made the situation considerably worse. They also think there are some green shoots of recovery in there, that some of the longer waiting times, over 18 months or over a year, are starting to fall a bit. So may be a sign that some of that is coming under control. But the challenge for government is to ensure the public it has a grip on this, that even after covid and those strikes they can get the hs back on track. Labour say they are completely failing at that, cant trust the current government with the health of the nhs. But this will be a key issue over the next few months and could be a decisive issue at the next general election. Nick eardley at westminster, thank you. Theres a glimmer of hope for thousands of mortgage holders, as halifax says its going to cut rates on some of its fixed Mortgage Deals. The uks biggest Mortgage Lender will reduce rates by up to 0. 71 Percentage Points from friday. 0ther lenders have also been announcing changes to some of their deals. 0ur Cost Of Living correspondent Kevin Peachey is with me. I think its probably a case of less bad its probably a case of less bad news for many thousands of home owners who are looking to renew their Mortgage Deals soon. The likelihood is many of them will still be paying hundreds of pounds more each month in their monthly repayments. We also had separate figures today from the Banking Sector saying more people are falling behind on their mortgage payments. But we have got these rate cuts from halifax, follows the likes of hsbc and nationwide, and clearly if this is a sign of things to come, and remember it remains and if that will be welcomed by homeowners and particularly by first time buyers. I think theres a couple of reasons behind | theres a couple of reasons behind it. Clearly the lenders have been looking at better than expected inflation data, the rate of rising prices, and they are thinking maybe the Bank Of England isnt going to keep its Interest Rates as high for as long. There is also more competition for borrowers at the moment because of a bit of a lack of activity in the Housing Market so that may be bringing rates down a bit. In the end ultimately i think we are not going to see a return to those ultra low rates many people enjoyed over the course of a decade or so. Kevin peachey, thank you. Our top story this afternoon. At least 36 people have been killed as wildfires sweep through islands in hawaii. Last season this club finished eighth in the Premier League meaning there wont be any championship football for them this season. And of course harry kane has still only got one year left of his contract, so that means the club faced a dilemma. They had a situation where they eye their cash in on the player now or potentially let him go on a free transfer. It looks like they have gone for the former. We have heard Bayern Munich all through the summer trying to land a signing of the england captain, and we heard tottenham rejected a lot of those bids. Then Bayern Munich said here is your deadline, if you dont let us know by then, its all over. The deadline came and went, and today we have had an announcement from the club that an arrangement has been met, and we believe that is around £86 million. Its not all Done And Dusted because we understand it is now up for the player himself to decide. So will he may be stay here at tottenham . He has been here in the youth ranks since 200a. I a level students are being warned that theyll have to be quick off the mark to get a place at university through clearing this year. The head of the Admissions Service ucas says competition for top degree places will be tougher and that students should have a plan b. Lets speak to our education editor, branwen jeffreys, whos at the university of manchester. Why are ucas saying this . There are more 18 year olds in the population this year and there will be for a few years to come, and that means a bigger number of people applying to university. 0n means a bigger number of people applying to university. On top of that we have seen a slight increase in the number of International Students choosing to come and study in the uk. At a time when the tuition fees in england are frozen, those International Students are a valuable source of money for universities because they pay up to four times more, so that adds up to a bit more competition, particularly if you want to apply and are waiting to hear about a place at the universities that ask for the highest grades, like manchester, or for a course that asks for higher grades like medicine. But it doesnt mean to say there wont be a University Place for people who want them. There are already around 28,000 courses in clearing from the universities across the uk, so students are being advised to think ahead if they are applying for something that is very competitive, and think what their plan b would be. The biggest challenge for most students in england will be the cost of living. The loans they can take out to pay for their living costs have not gone up by anything like the amount of the increase we are seeing in prices, particularly for basics like food, so for students who cant rely on the bank of mum and dad or whose families are already stretched, the financial worries might be the biggest ones. Envisaged wanting to go into space, but the opportunity as a bit of an adventurer to actually go to 70 miles high, see the curvature of the earth, the blackness of space, going weightless, and all these things, was an opportunity that i couldnt miss. But news he received that same year made him think he might. Jon was diagnosed with parkinsons disease, which damages parts of the brain, and its progression is impossible to predict. I was pretty convinced that they were going to turn round to me and say, youre not able to go. But they have been fantastic. The fact that i can defy my parkinsons. Three years ago, i climbed kilimanjaro and cycled down, just to prove that it wasnt going to get me. And this is the same thing. Youre going to space despite the parkinsons. And sojon is now finally preparing to board the spaceship unity. Hell bejoined on his mission by Keisha Schahaff from antigua and her daughter, ana mayers, who studies in aberdeen.
