Chief constable has apologised to officers, saying this is unacceptable. Chris page has the story. Police officers everywhere face risks when doing theirjobs. But, in this part of the uk, the dangers are particularly stark, given the Terrorism Threat is a daily reality. The Police Service of Northern Ireland is now dealing with whats thought to be the most serious data breach in its history. So what was within that data was the surname, the initial, the rank or grade, the location in the department for each of our current employees across the Police Service. We operate in an environment at the moment, where theres a Severe Threat to our colleagues from Northern Ireland related terrorism and this is the last thing that anybody in the organisation wants to be hearing this evening. The information was on a website for about two hours yesterday afternoon. It was released in response to a request made under freedom of information laws, which focused on how many officers work at different levels. But the surnames and other details were issued by mistake. I think the overriding emotions and that of the officers whove contacted me is one of shock, dismay and anger. I mean, a lot of our officers go to extraordinary lengths to protect their identities and to protect the roles that they perform for the psni. Earlier this year, the Terrorism Threat level in Northern Ireland was raised after the Attempted Murder of a senior detective. John caldwell was shot at a Sports Complex after a youth football coaching session. Its believed he was attacked by the new ira, a dissident republican paramilitary group, opposed to the peace process. In apologising to officers, the Police Service has admitted the data breach is the last thing they wanted to hear about, given the security situation. Chris page, bbc news, belfast. In his first one to one interview since the data breach the forces Assistant Chief Constable chris todd spoke the bbc s stephen nolan. Well, i can give Everybody Assurance that i understand that sentiment, i understand the concerns. We are operating in an environment at the moment where there is a Severe Threat to all of our people from Northern Ireland related terrorism. So this is absolutely what people desperately dont want to hear, is that any of the data has been compromised. Is that any of their data has been compromised. So i owe it to all of my colleagues to investigate this as thoroughly as i possibly can, to identify any risks that are presented to any individual and to vindicate those, and to do everything i possibly can individual and to mitigate those, and to do everything i possibly can to make sure that such breaches dont happen again. I feel for all of my colleagues, this is an unacceptable situation. The eight countries that share the amazon basin have fallen short of an agreed goal to end deforestation. Delegates from the countries are meeting in the brazilian city of belem for a two day summit on the issue, the first such gathering in 14 years. The lengthy road map outlined in the city of belem promotes sustainable development, an end to deforestation, and fighting the Organized Crime that fuels it. Lets take a look at the rainforest thats at stake. The amazon stretches nearly Seven Million square kilometers, with two thirds of it in brazil. Another seven countries, and one terrority share the remaining third. Under brazils former president , jair bolsonaro, years of deforestation in the amazon worsened. The orange on this map shows the areas of deforestation between 2019 and 2022 in the state of para, where the summit is. But new data shows a positive shift. Deforestation in the amazon fell by 66 last month compared to the year before. Its now at its lowest rate in six years. Our correspondent katy watson is in the amazon at the summit and sent this report. Virgin forest still exists here in the amazon, but every day the illegal loggers get closer. From up high, you can see the damage done, the large patches of land totally cleared. This part of brazil has the highest rate of deforestation in the country. Underjair bolsonaro, Illegal Logging soared. President Lula Da Silva has promised to fix the problem. Translation the challenges. Of our era and the opportunities that arise demand joint action. We need to reconcile Environmental Protection and social inclusion, encourage science, technology and innovation, encourage the local economy, fight international crime, and value the Indigenous People and traditional communities and their ancestral knowledge. For those living under the rainforest s canopy, its been a difficult few years. Translation you have no idea how much pressure there was in our community under the bolsonaro government. Landowners, circling planes, soya farmers wanting to buy the land to deforest it. Cockerel crows robson, though, didnt get bought out. Instead, he wants to grow sustainable crops like acai. Hes part of a booming Carbon Credit Industry here. Companies emitting Carbon Dioxide can buy credits from projects like robsons and that should help reduce emissions, but not everyone is convinced. Bianca and herfamily, like many in the region, want Better Services like schools and health centres. But they are suspicious of these new carbon Credit Companies offering to help them. Translation it is not that transparent. We cannot see how it would give us a secure life. We are always on the back foot and fear the consequences. Because of the stories we heard, we decided not to sign a contract. And that is a problem. When People Struggle to get by, and when the state fails to help them, it is easier to accept money from lucrative Illegal Logging. Ensuring the amazons future means improving the lives of nearly 50 Million People who live here. Just to get to this part of the amazon, it took 13 hours overnight on a riverboat, and now this smaller boat, to get to the communities here. But if you look on a map, it all looks so close together, and itjust goes to show how vast the amazon is, but also how difficult it is to navigate, and ultimately, also, how difficult it will be for lula to achieve his zero deforestation by 2030. Which is why he needs the backing of all of the countries who share the amazon. Leaders are expected to offer solutions to Illegal Logging and mining, moving away from big infrastructure projects. But money talks, and without offering a better life for those who live in the forest, any discussion of conservation is pointless. Katy watson, bbc news in belem. Theres not much we know at the moment. As you mentioned, 41 migrants have been killed in a shipwreck off Italys Lampedusa island, that is in sicily in the south of the country. This is all being reported by the Italian News Agency ansa, and they are citing accounts from survivors. They were rescued by the italian coastguard, and they told rescuers that they were on a boat that set off from tunisia on thursday. They said that 45 people were on board, including three children. They described the boat is a very small vessel, about seven metres long. And they said that about six hours after they had set off from tunisia, when they were sailing in the sicilian sea, the boat capsized and sank because of a very big wave. They also said that out of the 45 people who were on board, only 15 people were wearing life vests. Hundreds of firefighters in portugal have been battling a large wildfire, which is threatening to spread towards the popular Tourist Destination of the algarve. More than 20,000 acres of land have been ravaged by the fire over the last four days, because of high temperatures and strong winds. 0ur Correspondentjenny Hill reports from 0deceixe. You can see the devastation caused by this fire, they reckon some a0 square miles were consumed in the five days now that it has been burning. If you come around with me you can see that actually the earth here is still smouldering in places. Smoke drifting across the valley. We saw a lot of that smouldering going on at the side of the road and even some flames at one point as we drove up here. Down the valley there, is the town of 0deceixe and the residents there i think this morning will be feeling extremely relieved. The fire reached almost to the very edge of that town. We passed on its outskirts and there were very small burned out buildings but of the town itself has escaped the fire. So a lot of relief there. But not far from here, firefighters, hundreds of them we are told, have spent the night trying to bring the flames under control. As you saw in my colleagues report, they have said that they were particularly concerned overnight about the wind which has been fanning the flames in recent days. And they said it was likely to change direction last night which they feared would make the fire far less easy to bring under control. At the moment, it is very still here. It is also incidentally rather cool but the sun is rising and temperatures are expected to hit a high. Everyone is going to be keeping a close eye on what that wind gets up to. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Lets look at some other stories making news. To the us next where a judge in los angeles has sentenced the canadian rapper, tory lanez to ten years in Prison For Shooting Fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion in the foot three years ago. 0ur reporter Nicky Schiller is in the newsroom with more details. I wanted to start by giving you a bit of background to this case, which involves one of the biggest Hip Hop Stars in the world. Now, three years ago, reality star kylie jenner hosted a pool party in the hollywood hills. During thejourney home, grammy award winner Megan Thee Stallion and canadian rapper tory lanez got into an argument over a previous sexual relationship. Now that row intensified, at which point megan demanded that she be let out of the vehicle. Tory lanez began shooting to the ground and said that she should dance. Now, megan needed surgery to remove Bullet Fragments from her foot. Tory lanez, seen here during the trial, always denied the shooting and even released an entire album to argue he was innocent. But he was found guilty in december last year and has now been sentenced to ten years in jail. His lawyer hit out at the length of the sentence. In this case, to get a ten year sentence is extreme and reallyjust another example of someone being punished for their Celebrity Status and someone being utilised to send an example. And hes not an example. Hes a human being. This case was divisive in the hip hop world. Indeed, the Sentencing Hearing lasted two days as the judge said he had had 70 letters from friends and family in support of tory lanez. Now, when megan gave evidence in december last year, supporters gathered outside the court with posters saying, we stand with megan. She gave a Victim Impact Statement in which she said she would never be the same, adding that since i was viciously shot by the defendant, i have not experienced a single day of peace. Now, prosecutors have praised her for coming forward, saying herfame has helped raise the issue of violence against women. The fact that she is a successful entertainer has brought the spotlight on the important issue of violence against women. There are many people in our community that endure acts of violence every day from people close to them and feel reluctant to come forward when this happens. I hope that ms peet s bravery gives hope to those that feel helpless. Tory lanez told the court that he considered he and megan were still friends. It is unclear whether the rapper, who has had seven top ten us albums in the last seven years, is now facing deportation to canada. There is inconsistency in previous studies that the number we might have got benefits is 6000 to 10,000. We used the opportunity to 10,000. We used the opportunity to investigate noticed that it is enough to have around 4000, and more, obviously, to see significant benefits on mortality. 0bviously more, obviously, to see significant benefits on mortality. Obviously the main message concerning the steps number does not change, so the more steps we can do, the Better Health effects we might observe, even up to 20,000 steps per day, because we were able to restrict our analysis to this number is the point so more is always better. One of them was questions from previous studies. One of them was this cut off point number of them was this cut off point number of the number of steps, over which number of the number of steps, over which we number of the number of steps, over which we might observe benefits. But we also which we might observe benefits. But we also wanted to see whether there were differences for male and female. Were differences for male and female, orthe were differences for male and female, or the place you are living, and age female, or the place you are living, and age 50 female, or the place you are living, and age. So we also saw there was no difference and age. So we also saw there was no difference between women and men, no difference difference between women and men, no difference where we live, so its critically difference where we live, so its critically important because there might critically important because there might have been some differences that came might have been some differences that came out with different populations with different dietary habits.
