We turn to brazil and a Landmark Summit to protect the amazon rainforest. The leaders of eight South American countries that share the amazon, have gathered in the city of belem. Scientists are concerned that, deforestation in the amazon may be approaching an irreversible tipping point. The summit s host brazils president Lula Da Silva is hoping for a co ordinated regional approach, to tackle illegal mining and logging as well as other environmental crimes. Our reporter Azadeh Moshiri looks at whats at stake the amazon is, of course, beautiful, but its also hugely important in the fight against climate change. And thats because it stores so much carbon dioxide, which drives the Climate Crisis were currently facing. And yet the forest is under threat of deforestation. Now, 60 of it is located in brazil, which is why the country is taking the lead in hosting eight other countries in south america who share the amazon. And this is a big deal. Its the first time in 45 years that theres been a coordinated meeting for a Regional Response to the crisis the amazon is currently facing. And domestically, president lula has made a lot of big commitments. That includes reversing the deforestation that was rising under his predecessor, president jair bolsonaro. And if you look at the numbers, hes doing a very good job because the National Space agency has said that injuly of 2023, theres been a 66 drop compared tojuly of 2022. And if you look at the last few months, thats a drop, a trend that weve been seeing. Now, hes also committed to zero deforestation by 2030. So how is he going about things like this . Well, hes looking to tackle things like mining and illegal logging. And if you look at the fines in the first seven months of 2023, theyve already risen by nearly 150 . So those are really big actions that hes taking in a short amount of time. Now, the outcome of the summit isntjust important to those who are looking at combating climate change. Its also hugely important to Indigenous Leaders and activists who are looking at protecting their ancestral land. And so while the results of this summit are currently unknown, theres a lot of hope in terms of what this could mean for the amazon itself. The rate the of deforestation in the amazon has fluctuated in recent years. But to give a sense of the scale of whats being lost, in 2019 our Science Editor at the time, David Shukman went to the amazon to report on the destruction. Here was his assessment the problem is that more and more of it is being chopped down. It is hard to believe, but an area the size of a Football Pitch is being cleared every single minute. What that means, is that forest that could cover more than 2000 pictures, is just vanishing every day. All the signs are that this rate of deforestation will accelerate. Lets talk now to daniel nepstad, hes the president each of the Earth Innovation Institute and a specialist on the amazon. An assessment of how important this Summit Actually is. This an assessment of how important this Summit Actually is. Summit actually is. This is the beginning Summit Actually is. This is the beginning of Summit Actually is. This is the beginning of which Summit Actually is. This is the beginning of which should Summit Actually is. This is the | beginning of which should lead Summit Actually is. This is the. Beginning of which should lead to Summit Actually is. This is the beginning of which should lead to a nine nation strategy for keeping the amazon the whole and healthy. There is no such strategy currently and this is a meeting around some goals. Including zero deforestation by 2030, the role of Indigenous People is critical guardians of the forests. But i dont think there would be as much progress and how do we fund the strategy. We need new funding that is adequately agile to make it to the ground. Funding that is adequately agile to make it to the ground. Coming to the wa s that make it to the ground. Coming to the ways that the make it to the ground. Coming to the ways that the country make it to the ground. Coming to the ways that the country can make it to the ground. Coming to the ways that the country can actually ways that the country can actually Make Progress in the moment but how much of the amazon because it is absolutely huge how much is currently under threat. The threat is the most currently under threat. The threat is the most insidious currently under threat. The threat is the most insidious and currently under threat. The threat is the most insidious and its is the most insidious and its the fact that the rainfall that makes the rain forest depends on the forest itself weve already seen the tray season is a month longer were deforestation is most advanced among the eastern edge of the amazon and southern areas. What this means is that the rain forest which is pretty hard to burn, if theres enough trout, even a standing forts that have never been bothered can catch fire in that scenario is a very serious threat in the best of he keep it from happening is to slow deforestation way down and allow for us to come back on the land on areas that were cleared and not good for agricultural livestock. Hahn that were cleared and not good for agricultural livestock. Agricultural livestock. How to use loadin agricultural livestock. How to use loading deforestation, agricultural livestock. How to use loading deforestation, using agricultural livestock. How to use loading deforestation, using the. Loading deforestation, using the phrase like that, you have eight countries and i do Make Progress on that . ,. ,. ,. ,. ,. , that . Gift to bring Law And Order to the amazon that . Gift to bring Law And Order to the amazon and that . Gift to bring Law And Order to the amazon and is that . Gift to bring Law And Order to the amazon and is a that . Gift to bring Law And Order to the amazon and is a huge that . Gift to bring Law And Order to the amazon and is a huge area the amazon and is a huge area that its difficult to enforce laws across. They require a land holder keep 80 of their farm under forest to enforce that is another thing thats really ramped up under the administration and pursue holding 60 of the forest but there also needs to be economic incentives and Production Systems that are consistent with forest friendly and Climate Friendly developments and theres lots of options there. Aquaculture is the agreed low carbon protein and takes 20 of the land compared to cattle which are currently the dominant reasons that are following in emmas onions love fish. That is built into their culture and the culinary traditions and getting back to fish both come from the amazon and tributaries but also aquaculture is one way of providing a good substitute to beef which is really the land for everyone. Which is really the land for everyone which is really the land for eve one. , , everyone. Eight countries coming up with common everyone. Eight countries coming up with Common Solutions everyone. Eight countries coming up with Common Solutions and everyone. Eight countries coming up with Common Solutions and the with Common Solutions and the president talked about Previous Solutions being all talk and no action because they have to come up with economic models that supplant the current model weather is so much may be made from deforestation . I think this is our chance to get this done and i think it would take him several rounds of meetings but we have to hurry and i think the states in the provinces and the governments and the case of peru, theyve already been meeting in these governments representing 80 of the forest already have some Good Strategies for getting the job done that complement the National Strategies and we have to bring them the states and provinces into this agenda and we need a new funding. Funding the scale of a few billion dollars that doesnt take three years of four years to get to the ground but moves quickly, one big opportunity is with some of the states the amazon in brazil are doing which is close and Carbon Credit Deals with major buyers and these are not little Carbon Projects that have been criticised in the news but these are big systemic shifts in the Rural Development model and the steals can inject at least some of the needed finance to make the transition to a forest from the development pathway. Make the transition to a forest from the development pathway. Thank you for takinu the development pathway. Thank you for taking the the development pathway. Thank you for taking the time the development pathway. Thank you for taking the time to the development pathway. Thank you for taking the time to speak the development pathway. Thank you for taking the time to speak with the development pathway. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us l for taking the time to speak with us on bbc news. Thank you. Lets turn to the major political emergency unfolding in west africa following the Military Coup in niger. Diplomatic efforts to find a resolution have stepped up with a warning from washington. Speaking to the bbc the us Secretary Of State Antony Blinken has voiced his concern that nigers military leaders, might turn to the Russian Mercenary Group wagner for help. The group is active in neighbouring countries theyre seen here in the Central African republic last month and wagners leader has welcomed the takeover. The coup leaders, are currently Standing Firm against calls to restore democratic rule. Heres what mr blinken had to say about wagner a little earlier for sure we have concerns when we see Something Like the wagner group possibly manifesting itself in different parts of the sahel. And here is why we are concerned. Because every single place that this group, wagner group has gone, death, destruction and exploitation have followed. Insecurity has gone up, not down. It has not been a response to the needs of the countries in question for greater security. I think what happened and what continues to happen in niger was not instigated by russia or by wagner but to the extent that they try to take advantage of it and we see a repeat of what has happened in other countries where theyve brought nothing but bad things in their wake, that wouldnt be good. The wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin has released an Audio Message referring to the coup in niger. The recording emerged on telegram, though the date and location cant be independently verified. Mr prigozhin had this message apparently for the coup leaders translation we are always on the side of goodness, justice and on the side of those who fight for sovereignty and for the rights of their people. Call us anytime. I asked our security correspondent, frank gardner, for his assessment of mr blinkens comments and the crisis unfolding on the ground. It is a criticaljuncture, because diplomatic efforts to try to reverse this coup have not worked. Niger is one of several countries in west africa belonging to, ecowas, the Economic Community of west african states. They have got together and said that enough is enough. If the coup plotters wont back down, we will intervene militarily. There was a one week deadline which expired on sunday. Ecowas s bark is worse than its bite, they are reluctant and havent Got Unanimity on how to intervene militarily. I think it is almost inevitable wagner want to move in there because they have been able to sew up mali, burkina faso, the Central African republic, where they have a lucrative arrangement with those governments. They provide security solutions, and i use that word very broadly, because they are accused of horrendous human rights atrocities, massacres of civilians and so on, which they deny. In exchange for that, they get lucrative mineral contracts, minerals, diamonds and gold, and niger is the worlds seventh largest producer of uranium. Up to now, france has been getting about 15 of its uranium needs from niger. Wagner would probably like to move in there, creating a coup belt of countries, and they have got operations in sudan, as well as other countries. A final point, in terms of, that was some of the economics for the wagner group, but in terms of the west, they still have troops in niger, they have been using that and have bases in that country. What is the prospect for that now . I think it is looking pretty grim for western and internationalforces in niger. There are 2600 french and us troops in niger. It is a huge country of roughly 27 Million People, very large areas, and the french, americans, germans, italians and brits have been using it as a base to fight the jihadist insurgents is, the ones linked to isis and alqaeda. They have been able to defeat those insurgencies and there is a certain amount of unpopularity, hang over from French Colonial rule, where a number of nigerians have supported this coup, saying they have got nothing from the french and they failed to defeat the insurgency, and all they have done is exploit the country. We welcome the russians. It looks like it is going to be the next domino to fall in those countries that have succumbed to west african coups. I cant see a Military Intervention by ecowas doing anything other than igniting a civil, and possibly regional, war. Around the world and across the uk. The share of ecowas saying that ecowas would prefer a resolution that was obtained through diplomatic and peaceful means as frank was talking about originally the regional bloc issued the deadline that they made it nine days ago that the coup leaders would destroy the elected president and they said if not, potentially there would be a Military Intervention and since then, an element of rolling back and perhaps moderating slightly different with frank was saying in terms of practicalities of any Military Intervention that they would prefer a resolution that was obtained through diplomatic and peaceful means that is the latest on that story. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Lets look at some other stories making news. Nhs flu jabs and covid boosters, will be scrapped for under 65s this winter. 12 Million People aged 50 to 64 who were eligible during the pandemic can no longer get the free jabs. Now, one of the countries that experienced extreme heat and Forest Fires Injuly was portugal. And august has seen no let up. Fires, like these shown here, are raging in the centre and south of the country, and monday saw the hottest temperature of the year 46. 1; degrees celsius, in santarem, north of the capital, lisbon. Well, one of those battling the extreme heat in southern portugal is the former bbc correspondent alastair leithead. I asked him how bad the fires are i could hear the constant buzz by me of the aircraft that during trips from the nearby reservoir to the site of the fire which is just over the hill behind me by Three Orfour Km from where we are and it has been the very front today because its been such a calm day and we had hot wings from the Eastern Interior for spains modest parts of the peninsula and doubles the size of the fire in a matter of hours in the firefighters of which there almost a thousand and 330 plus vehicles with around i or 12 air crafts are trying to contain it before the winds change and this is the big danger we have here is the winds of swirling around and it picks up and starts ploughing again in the buyer could soft valleys down to areas of Eucalyptus Forest Implying that for some kind of forests and the fire could spread once again. Everyone is very nervous here and hoping that the fire brigade are doing what they can and if taken this opportunity to get under control of the fire is much as they can stop without close geographically of the fires to you because you know last year, they got incredibly close, right up to your house. They were little september last year, this was a fire that started again and it was a day were rarely we have eastern wins and is on top of us in no time at all. We have eastern wins and is on top of us in no time at all. He had an hour to pack the car with other things we wanted and then we had to get burned but we had a Design Forfire but we had a design for fire and recovered quite well and part of our house was burned but again, this is the outside, we were very fortunate and unlucky that more damage was, we are lucky that more damage was not done. And cutting the land around the house in scott strum it down and making sure the firefighters dropped water on building specifically in the main priority is to prevent buildings being damaged and we know theres been around moo people evacuated from homes they know been some houses and resorts that have been destroyed south of the syrian thats the nearest town, five minutes drive from your of the hill in the fire was on the edge of that town yesterday and people are getting very nervous when you cannot see the sun to the smoke of the town centre and people get very worried about things of god well, people are still on high alert and concerned that the winds can change very quickly here to be in a very difficult situation once again. In ireland, thousands of mourners have gathered for the funeral of the singer sinead oconnor, who died last month at the age of 56. There was a huge turn out in the coastal town of bray, near dublin, to say farewell to the star. The procession passed her former home. From there our reporter sara girvin sent this update. 0ur reporter sara girvin, has been in bray. They have been singing, laying flowers and tributes and sharing memories of the singer and activist. 0ne fan told us earlier that she got up at 2am this morning to travel here. Another couple have just stopped us to show us pictures of their grandchildren with the star. That is how much shes thought of here, and how important it was for people to be in bray today. After a private service this morning, just about an hour ago, the Funeral Cortege passed through this coastal road, past her home. Music had been playing up until that point, people had been singing, but when the car got here, you could have heard a pin drop. There was silence. But not for long, because there were rounds of applause after rounds of applause as people were embracing each other and throwing flowers at the vehicle. Really, really emotional scenes. Then the vehicle went on down this road, it went on to a private burial. This was the only public part of the service. One of the attendees at the private part was the irish president , michael d higgins, and he said not long ago that sinead 0connor s contribution to music was phenomenal. He said it came from incredible pain. Perhaps too much for one to bear. The people here have been really grateful that they got to say their final goodbyes. It was a day of very mixed emotions, of mourning but of celebration too. Its been another big day at the womens world cup with two more Teams Colombia and france making it through to the quarterfinals. Earlier, i spoke to our reporter mimi fawaz about frances comfortable win over debutants morocco. Yes, of course france showed their superior quality whence playing debutants morocco, thrashing them in that match 4 0. Morocco is then spoken about is the first arab country to qualify in this competition, the first and then make it through to last 16, and france just proved too much for them to deal with. They had lots of defensive errors, but lets not forget this is the fourth consecutive that france have reached the quarterfinals of the womens world cup. And they are joined by colombia, that match was much tighter, wasnt it . Indeed, colombia went through getting one goal againstjamaica. To make a very strong defensively in the group stages, not conceding any goals, but colombia eventually, in the second half of the match, are able to break through the defence and get a goal. Colombia looking very good, they had a shock win against two time champions germany in the group stages, but there would be a very tough opponent for england to face next in the quarterfinals on saturday. Talking of england, laurenjames, she is was sent off in englands last match, she issued an apology today, but she is out of england plasma quarterfinal, isnt she . Yeah, she picked up the red card in the nigerian match when she stepped on the back of the nigerian defender. She came out on twitter today as well as the fa to apologise for what she did, and the nigeria defender as well has supported her and told people to leave her alone. People have spoken about her first time, shes very young on the stage, and the emotions got the best of her, but england will have to see, will they miss are for the rest of the tournament if fifa review it and give her possibly a two or three match ban, it could be a big miss for england. She has been a real star of the contest so far. Before we go some lovely pictures to show you. A black bear blamed for a string of break ins in california has been captured after more than a year on the run. The animal, weighing 35 stone is believed to have forced her way into more than 20 homes in the lake tahoe area, to steal food. The bear, nicknamed Hank The Tank will be moved to a new home, i2 hundred miles away, at a sanctuary in colorado. Ecowas meeting the spokesman saying no option is off the table at that summit on thursday and will take far reaching decisions and is saying nothing, including Military Intervention, is off the table. With us. Stay with us here on bbc news. Hello there. I think most of us have had to manage our expectations a little with summer 2023 across the uk, and the next few days no exception, im afraid. So far today the best of the sunshine has been through the north scotland, Northern Ireland and northern england. There has been a bit of a north south divide. Further south it was a cloudy, misty, murky, drizzly start to the day and that cloud and drizzle is pushing its way steadily east as we speak out of wales, out of south west england, over towards the capital and along the kent coast for the remainder of the afternoon. In fact, we draw a line really from north wales over to lincolnshire. Anywhere north of that will continue to see the best of the sunshine. A few scattered showers. The winds will strengthen close to gale force across the northern isles, tied in to storm hans thats affecting scandinavia at the moment. But one unifying factor is the feel of the weather still disappointing for this time of year. High teens for most, maybe, if were lucky, 20 or 21 degrees. Now, as we go through the evening and overnight, well see that rain easing away from the kent coast. We keep some Cloud Filtering in across the south west. Where weve got the breaks in the cloud temperatures into single figures, but it feels quite humid down to the south west by the end of the night as were tapping in to that warmer air coming from the near continent. High pressure is building and we will start to see an improving picture on wednesday, but this warm front toppling across the high will still introduce more in the way of Nuisance Cloud and drizzle. Quite murky conditions once again on those exposed west coasts. Northern and eastern areas seeing the best of the sunshine and potentially the best of the warmth on wednesday, but all of us will be a degree or so up in comparison to of late, so low 20s, possibly as high as 2a or 25 degrees. Thats the mid 70s fahrenheit. Warmer still as we go into thursday. Were going to tap into some extreme heat thats pushing its way up from iberia. By the time it gets to us, its not going to be, obviously, as hot. But nevertheless, thursday is likely to be the hottest day of the week as we see those temperatures widely into the mid 20s, possibly as high as 27 degrees. Thats 80 fahrenheit. But its not expected to last, as somewhat cooler and showery conditions are set to return from friday and into the weekend. This is bbc news the headlines. Saving the amazon leaders from eight South American countries gather to thrash out an urgent plan to protect the rainforest. Pakistans former Prime Minister imran khan is barred from holding Public Office for five years. The uks Elections Watchdog reveals its been the victim of a complex cyber attack potentially affecting millions of voters. And were live from the fringe in edinburgh where comedians and theatrical performers have gathered for the festivals 76th year. Sport and for a full round up, from the bbc sport centre, heres tolsen. Hello from the bbc sport centre. Colombia are through to their first womens world cup quarter final after beating jamaica i 0 and will now face england.
