In the year that black lives matter gripped the world, i set out to investigate what is the true scale of Lethal Police Violence in brazil and who is most at risk . Traveling across my home city of sao paulo, i went to meet a family whose teenage son had recently been shot and killed by a Police Officer in broad daylight. Dozens gather in sao paulo to protest igor� s death. Hes been gone for four months now, killed at 16 years old. His family and friends are very emotional, but they fight for justice. Igor was shot in the head by a Police Officer on his way to buy groceries while his mother, ana paula was at home with coronavirus. In order to understand the scale of Police Violence in sao paulo, i teamed up with a local ngo, the brazilian form of public safety. Together, we looked at the profiles of all those killed by the police in the first half of last year. We discovered that in a state where the large majority of people self identified as white nearly 60 of those killed were black. Almost all of them were male, and a shocking 30 were less than 24 years old. Quite simply, if you are young, male and black in 2020, you are more likely to be killed by the police. These neighborhoods where i lived, where a many people live, where the bbc office is, they are the high income neighborhoods from sao paulo. So the way the police behave in these neighborhoods, its totally different from the way they behave where igor lived. For example, theres lots of mugging in my neighborhood, and sometimes boys on bikes, they pass by and they steal your phone. This happened to me a lot, like three times. So when im coming back from work and i come from the subway and i look at the corner of my apartment and i see a police car, ithink, oh, im safe, thats good. I feel safe, you know . Which is totally different from the neighborhoods farfrom downtown. One of the most violent killings of 2020 was that a 15 year old guilherme seen here celebrating his birthday. Before he disappeared, guilherme was last seen here outside of his grandmothers house. When he was finally found, he had been shot dead. Guilherme can be seen in the video with a man later identified as a former Police Officer. In another, a Police Officer. Six hours later, his body was discovered dumped six km away in another city. He had been shot in the mouth. Rio dejaneiro is famous for its beaches, culture and carnaval. But its also the most deadly state in brazilfor Police Killings. Criminals who are often armed and dangerous. Speaking to rio� s former police chief, he does not condone the killings. But with one of the highest crime rates in the world, he says its important to understand being a Police Officer in brazil is extremely dangerous. For those living through lockdown in rio, it was notjust about avoiding coronavirus but also police shootings. As a Journalist Living and working here, bruno itan says hes devastated how the violence has become a part of his daily routine. But last year, bruno witnessed one raid which shook the community to its core. It was known on friday when more than a dozen Police Officers entered the Favela Looking for armed drug dealers. Locals say at least 12 people were killed and five bodies left behind. Last year, in rio, Police Violence seemed to be escalating out of control. With an average of 150 people dying every month, the killings seemed relentless. All leading up to one pivotal case, the death of this child, joao pedro changed everything. We are going to meet rafaela, rafaela isjoao pedros mum. Joao pedro was murdered in may inside his house during a police operation. He was iii years old. Rafaelas tragic account matches forensic reports from the crime scene. Entering this house is like witnessing a horror scene. You have toys everywhere, you have childrens clothes in the bedrooms, you see clearly this is a house where children use to hang out all the time. And besides that, you have lots of bloodstains still from joao pedro. Blood still on the floor. You have these huge holes on the wall from the guns that the police shot more than 80 times. Joao� s death sparked such outrage across the country, in response, the authorities suspended all police raids across thousands of favelas. Immediately, the death toll plummeted, but despite all of the media attention, joao� s family is still worried there will be no justice. Daniel lozoya is their lawyer. The death ofjoao pedro led to the stopping of all raids, and the stopping of all raids led to an 80 decrease in the number of People Killed by the police every month, according to our investigation. This suggests more than 100 lives could be saved every month. Asked by the bbc if police raids would restart after the pandemic ends, rio� s office of security said. Into the weekend, the cold air makes a return, and we could even see some disruption in places from some sleet and snow. So, the uk becomes the scene of a battleground of the air masses. Colder air to the north, milder air to the south. 0n The Boundary where we have a Weather Front, were likely to see rain, sleet and snow. And fairly strong winds associated with this area of low pressure, so some of the snow which will be developing across wales will tend to drift in this strong wind. Very wet across southern and western areas. Could see some wet snow and sleet into the midlands, the South East Of England as well. Further rain across the very far south west, where here, just holding onto the dregs of the milder air, but elsewhere cold. But at least brighter across the north and the east of the uk. Just one or two wintry showers. Now a very cold night to come saturday night. Widespread frost, some ice to watch out for certainly for Southern England and wales. And then into sunday, a new area of low pressure will start to work its way in from the west. So a cold, dry start for most, and then well see the clouds building, outbreaks of rain pushing in with some sleet and snow developing across northern ireland, wales again, into the midlands and Southern England again. Further accumulations likely over the welsh hills. Further north, again brighter and drier, but a cold day for all. Now as we move out of sunday into monday, that area of low pressure slips into the near continent. Its Weather Front breaks into two. 0ne moves southwards, another one lingers across Western Parts of britain. So it could be a rather wet day again for parts of northern ireland, and again with cold air around, there could be some sleet and snow around. Some of that rain also affecting western wales, the far south west. But the further north and east that you are, away from this Weather Front, it should be drier again and keeping the brightness, but a cold day, single figure values. As we move out of monday into tuesday, a more significant area of low pressure will start to move up from the south west, and that will once again introduce some milder air. But as that milder air bumps into the colder air with this Weather Front, were likely to see, yes, further more sleet and snow. So across central and northern parts of the country, could see some widespread snow for a time on tuesday, even down to lower levels. And then it becomes confined to the hills as that milder air begins to move its way northwards. Double figure values in the south, stays cold, though, across much of scotland. From tuesday into wednesday, low pressure sits to the west of the uk, bringing bands of rain, sleet and snow moving northwards. We could see a few showers, some sunshine across the south of the country, where itll be milder. Further north, where the rain bumps into the colder air, were likely to see further sleet and snow over the pennines and the Higher Ground of scotland. Single figure values here, double figure values further south. Now as we move deeper on into the new week, the jet stream becomes more amplified. Deep, meanderingjet stream, which eventually will break away and dive south in towards the biscay. Now this area of low pressure to the west of the uk will fade away, but with the jet stream to the south of the uk, it could allow High Pressure to build in across the north east of the uk over scandinavia. And theres just signs that it could allow for some very cold air to seep our way as we move in towards the end of the week. This is certainly one to watch. It looks very cold indeed. But for the upcoming week, it looks like it will be less cold for a time thanks to atlantic lows. Rain moving up from the south will bump into the cold, so we could see further sleet and snow at times. But theres signs of it becoming much colder again by the end of the week.
