We know with their a level grades, that it was a passenger train that in a change announced just ahead was in for, but the number of of tomorrows results. Injuries of those on board, and im joined by sirjon coles, certainly the condition of those on chief executive of united learning, the largest Multi Academy trust board is currently unconfirmed and in england, a group of 85 state unknown. We know that the train that and private schools. Derailed was made up of the two hes also former director general locomotives at the front and the for schools and director general back, and im told there were four for education standards passenger carriages in the middle, in the department for education. And a number of these carriages are welcome, thank you very much for joining us. What do you think about now fallen over and a button. To this change that has been announced give you some context, we are about with mac well, it is a light change four miles from stonehaven, and of course, and that is not hugely between stonehaven and laurencekirk. It isa between stonehaven and laurencekirk. It is a very rural area, a very confidence barring. In truth, i think you will have quite a marginal narrow country roads. Emergency effect. For a few students who did services have been rushing along lanes and roads to reach the scene of this morning and into the particularly well in their marks, it is obviously good news and it is afternoon. There is around 35 good security for them. The truth is emergency vehicles at the peak of this incident, including a number of though, often the schools use marks your ambulances and a coast guard to give young people a bit of a kick helicopter, and we understand a number of these coastguard up to give young people a bit of a kick up the backside, they make the helicopter flights have been taken standards high and hard and they off and going to aberdeen royal mark them quite harshly and often stu d e nts mark them quite harshly and often students dont work as hard for infirmary, and consequently returning to the scene here. Smoke their marks as they went for the real thing. It is not unwelcome, i could also be seen billowing from the tree line just behind me, from think the margins will help the where the track actually is. The students, i think it is probably a truck runs through the tree line, good thing, i dont think it changes through quite a steep embankment and the overall picture too much. A valley, so we are unable to see good thing, i dont think it changes the overall picture too muchm good thing, i dont think it changes the overall picture too much. It is interesting if fate is not unwelcome the train or indeed the tractor to when you said it is not hugely the train or indeed the tractor to the restrictions and the obstacles that in our way. It is not yet clear confidence inspiring. When you say it is not likely to make a huge amount of difference, he might then what the cause of this incident is, think it would have been better to but as we have heard, we dont have do nothing and wait and see what extreme weather in this part of the happens tomorrow . Well, i do think board and the early hours of this morning. Some really heavy rainfall that the real concern at this point and thunderstorms, which did cause some disruption to the rail network. In the year is always, at this time, Nicola Sturgeon said her thoughts eve ryo ne in the year is always, at this time, everyone is very uncertain what is going to happen in the results, are with all those involved, and whatever it is anxious and nervous. Carter is an extremely serious this year, of course, it is just much more uncertain than normal. The situation. X resignations model that we have got means that investigations are ongoing, but at grades are being awarded in this an early stage. We hope to hear more very unusual, unprecedented way and shortly. Lets talk now to the msp so naturally people are more uncertain about what is going to for angus north and mearns, happen. What we should try to do is mairi gougeon. Model whats results they think each school would have got had students obviously it is extremely concerning sat the exams and then on the basis of that, towards the grades to breitner, and poppy have had reports of serious injuries, as yet we dont stu d e nts of that, towards the grades to students in the school based on a know how many people were on that train or how many people have been rank order that the school has entered, and i havejust had a cold provided. In other words, rank order that the school has provided. In otherwords, if rank order that the school has provided. In other words, if of called model says he would have got with network rail brother when able to offer too much information yet. Five a stars in your school in but as your correspondence said, we geography, then the first five stu d e nts geography, then the first five students in the rank order get a did have exceptionally heavy rain stars. And the next one gets an a. Last night, and at the window next to me right now, we can see that. And so on. That is the model that we have got and the real difficulty stonehaven had seen a flooding with that is that School Results earlier this morning because of that just got up and down from year to heavy rain, and i believe from that year. Not enormously, but a bit. And work well that they believe that thatis year. Not enormously, but a bit. And that is in an unpredictable way, and that initially it may be a cause of so it is not possible to predict what has happened here today, and perfectly accurately what the again thoughts are with everybody distribution of grade is that any involved in this tragic accident. One school would have got. Nicola sturgeon said earlier there obviously, that has led to an outcry we re Nicola Sturgeon said earlier there were early reports of serious that we have seen in scotland and i think what the government has tried injuries. In the conversations you to do is say, ok, is that something have had, have you been able to we can do . That will maybe give a ascertain how many people have been injured here . No, not as yet. And i bit more security to students in dont know how many people on the england. I think that is what has train either or how many people have prompted it. It is understood, 4096 been seriously injured as a result, but hopefully that will be more information emerging later on this of results have been adjusted. That is going to be a huge number of afternoon. I believe the scottish stu d e nts is going to be a huge number of students being affected. It sounds government is due to have a meeting at some point this afternoon, so i from what you are describing the am hopeful that more details will model here like it is identical to emerge after that, but i also just the one in scotland. Is that so . How hope everybody that was involved much is known about how each of the models works . Well, we understand will be ok. The suggestion that this is weather related, there was flooding and possibly a landslip the oft well will publish that full which has caused us to roman . That model tomorrow, they have described may well be. I havent seen the it quite fully, so it is not the footage, because i have been travelling up from the parliament same as the scottish model. It is because of all the events that have been happening today. But there was very similar, though, actually, the scottish model is rather more generous than the english model is. Some very, very heavy rain last night, and are that did cause some flooding and the nearby town of the scottish model that Nicola Sturgeon replaced built in 45 stonehaven as well as in other areas too. And from that conversation with Percentage Points of leniency into the grades that students were network rail, they believe that could be what has led to the awarded and that is not the case in incident. It was a very early train, england. Four or 5 . So i think the 639 from aberdeen to awarded and that is not the case in england. Four or5 . So it awarded and that is not the case in england. Four or 5 . So it is not the same model and actually the scottish one that has been abandoned glasgow. Mercifully, at a time when was more generous. So people are not commuting as much as they normally would, a lot fewer scottish one that has been abandoned was more generous. So that really does make you wonder what the people are using the railways, and reaction is going to be tomorrow also aberdeen is still in lockdown, when there was already that outcry with it the way that grades were so changed in scotland. Do you think also aberdeen is still in lockdown, so hopefully it will be the case they are going to have to move that there were fewer people on the further and do you think. . In train that might normally have been scotla nd further and do you think. . In scotland there was a demand early on using it. I hope that it is the for the grace to go back to what the case, and like i said, even though teachers were suggesting. That is we have heard there are serious not currently being strongly called for in england, but do you think injuries, i hope that everyone that that would be the best solution . |j was travelling on the train is now being taken care of and the rok, but think that would be the best solution . think it is quite difficult to again we are still waiting on more defend what they have done in details about that. Thank you very scotland, to be absolutely honest. We have got a situation where now, much indeed forjoining us. And of 45 of students in advanced highers course as soon as we get any more have got a grade a. Which isjust details on that ongoing operation, we will bring you the latest. Magically much higher than it has ever been in any previous year. That the education secretary, gavin williamson, has made is really the problem with going last minute changes to the way a level results in england are to be decided, following the outcry back to the teacher grades. Not that in scotland over estimated grades. Schools in england will be able the teachers have done something to appeal on behalf of students wanting to use their mock results wrong or are an trustworthy or for university places disreputable, they have done it as carefully a nd orjobs, if theyre better disreputable, they have done it as carefully and as rigorously as they than their official grades. Can. Of course, when you are pupils can also opt to sit assessing this in march, you have exams in the autumn. Got a huge amount of uncertainty as education unions said it beggared belief that changes to how well children have done. You were being made now. Might think that this young person the same system, which is also is 5050, might think that this young person is 50 50, they might have got a sea being used in Northern Ireland, or ab. What should they put that will apply to btec results this week info . Overwhelmingly, people and gcse results a week later. Teachers are going to put them the Welsh Government forward for the higher grade. We insists there will be no such problems in wales. Would see in england at a really our education correspondent dan johnson reports. Quite dramatic inflation in the the stifling stress of exam season was replaced with the anxiety grades distribution, if we did go of an untested system, of grades estimated by teachers purely back to what is called the and standardised across the country. Central grades, the grades produced now more late changes just a day by schools and teachers, so that is before most results. What really but that is why in Northern Ireland and england, people are not calling strongly for students unhappy tomorrow that. At the moment anyway. There is will be able to appeal to keep their expected grade a great sense that we are trying to based on mock exams instead. Be is that everyone as we possibly our concern was to ensure no can and obviously that means being feted this years students as much as possible, but also we have to students are disadvantaged. Think of last years student and next yea rs think of last years student and next years students. They will face we apologise to nobody the normal National Standards and he for finding solutions, even at the 11th hour will be, to some degree in to stop any student being competition with this years disadvantaged by this system. Students. This is a tonic i really feel for the regulators here, they have a difficult balancing act in trying to be as there is possible to and thats because scottish students everyone. Thank you very much for faced that very disadvantage, when 125,000 grades were downgraded. Speaking to us. We have a your protests brought about a reversal which means teachers original estimate will now stand. Scottish students are pleased it means their Overall Results are up 14 . Questions asked coming up soon. But these teenagers in hull are wondering how their grades will compare. Quite anxious. A man sexually abused as a schoolboy has been awarded this is a big phase, more than £1 million getting results. From his teachers employer. Haringey councils insurers argued its kind of a compromise unsuccessfully the assaults by andrew adams had caused no long term trauma. Situation this year. Despite pleading guilty to criminal charges, its unprecedented, no one has experienced it before. Adams argued in a civil case the then 13 year old im feeling happy that i did well had groomed him. In my mocks and assessments, our Legal Correspondent Clive Coleman has been speaking to the man we are calling james but im concerned im given something and i would have achieved more if id sat the exam. To hide his identity. Im concerned there will be looking at these children that have winners and losers in this. I am concerned as a principal been coming at this afternoon, with the release last night they arejust children about the use of mock results. And this idea that at 13, as a prepubescent 13 year old boy, i could instigate or groom a teacher of 35 years old. And i worry what message that may be sending to us as principles i mean, it really brings it to life of colleges. Just seeing young people now. Im worried that if they apply formulas based on previous years, in 1980, james, not some students will gain from that his real name, was and others will lose out. A pupil at Highgate Wood school we need to give these students the best possible chance to progress on. In north london, was raped by a man. Mock exams are done in different circumstances. Scared and confused, some students dont even have a grade to appeal for. He confided in teacher andrew adams the fear is this late tweak who told him that the incident to the system might not be enough proved he was gay. To deal with an unfair situation, that everyone would hate him, as was seen in scotland. But that he would be his friend. This is a complete fiasco. Adams groomed then sexually abused james for years. It was obvious that in the sports hall, i seem this was going to be to recall, in the school vehicle, difficult but this has been weeks or months coming. I think a volkswagen bus to have an 11th hour change, and he would me either before thats caused widespread chaos among or after going sailing. Teachers and families, it smacks of incompetence. Wiping away standardisation in the scottish results makes it his thing was assaulting you in Public Places and difficult to compare getting away with it. With previous years, he sexually assaulted me in regents park mosque. And if the rest of the uk doesnt follow the same and again, i am sure as scotland, there will be even more inconsistency. It was just for titillation, in a year where young to get away with it. People have had less people Sexual Activity with adams continued untiljames was 21. Have had less teaching, he worked successfully havent done exams, results go up 10 , many people would say the risk in it, but fearing his in that is that a grade a this year past would be discovered, he felt a deep shame and never does not feel the same as last year. Stayed in one job for very long. The english system is determined to do that, which is why andrew adams became deputy head of highgate those teacher predictions arent teacher predictions. Wood, even having a wing they have been worked of the school named after him. Through rigorously across a team and standardised by exam boards. He told me that somebody the Welsh Government has had been murdered down tried to assure a level students their modelling is fair, with nearly half of their final mark there and ijust remember being based on last years as levels. Universities are promising flexibility and understanding, absolutely terrified. James did not understand that he had been groomed in a year of real challenges. Until many years later as an adult. The real test tomorrow will be how in 2011, he had a severe mental breakdown. Big the changes are and how many in 2014, adams pleaded guilty students they affect. To charges of indecent assault and buggery againstjames when he was underage and was sentenced to 12 years, reduced to eight on appeal. Our political correspodent, whenjames brought a civil claim for compensation against jessica parker, is at westminster. Adams and the local authority haringey, adams argued that it unprecedented times. It was of was james, then a 13 year old course unprecedented for the pupil in his care, Scottish Government to do what they did, and now the westminster and not the other way around. Government hoping that what they have done will be enough to hold the but on the behalf of line. What is the reaction to that . Haringey, it was argued that when james left as you say, ministers across the the school in 1982, aged 15, country grappling with this but continued to go on sailing trips unprecedented situation of how to abort exam results were no exams with pupils and have actually happened, because of with adams, the local coronavirus. On the formula that they have come up with in England Authority was not responsible and scotland in a society that acts, because james had consented to have sex with him. Teachers provide estimates and they are put through a standardisation process but other things are taken into account, such as the schools adding that because the sex was non violent in nature, james could not have suffered any post traumatic stress. Past performance. That are bought in it felt that i was under attack for two days. Scotland, the Scottish Government i felt mentally let down by haringey. U turn on that. In england, i thought, they are dishonest, in pretending to the ministers seem determined not to public that they actually care. Perform a u turn. They are sticking because when they are confronted with the process. We should get more with somebody who suffered from information to more on exactly how serious abuse from another member of the staff, and the consequences, the that algorithm works, but the long term consequences of that, they want to then say schools minister today defending the that it is that persons felt and nothing to do with system and saying he would make no apology for this last minute change them. In a statement, Haringey Council in terms of potentially being able said, our sincere sympathies remain with the victim. To use your mock exam results to we previously strongly condemn the actions of andrew adams and that appeal a result if you feel that you position has not changed. Have been treated unfairly in terms the civil case was an of the exams process. Interestingly, appeal brought by our he said around 40 of results could insurers legal team, not the council, to decide the level of be adjusted, and that could include damages. I have also been isolated upgrades as well as darren criss, from my family and friends. Victims of sexual abuse face a long but he said the vast majority of stu d e nts but he said the vast majority of students with end up feeling content road to justice through the courts, with their results. We will have to wait and see tomorrow polar that answer accusations that seekers, and i think the reaction they were in some way complicit. Will be very important tomorrow to jamess challenge now see exactly what the situation is, is to try and heal. But in terms of the reaction, we have heard unhappiness from the the headlines on bbc news. Unions are what they call an 11th hour change, and the labour party very critical, the situation as chaotic, and saying the government needs to provide a more robust a Major Incident is declared after a train derails process. People not convinced in near stonehaven in aberdeenshire. First minister Nicola Sturgeon some quarters of using mock exams as a way of appealing are processed says there are reports because, for example, mock exams can because, for example, mock exams can students in england may be able be carried out very differently in to use their mock exam different schools, and it is important to note they have said, a scores if theyre unhappy with their a level grades, in a change announced just ahead valid mock exams can be used. Left, they dont have that much ammunition to make that argument. There has been a great deal of delight from black women in particular, who see this as confirming or affirming their role not only in the country but in the Democratic Party, because they are an important constituency. The democratic establishment has a family close ranks behind ms harris, calling her showbiz and, fearless, eggs etc. That includes former president s. The Prime Minister said his thoughts were with all those affected and his thanks with the Emergency Services on the scene. These pictures show it is not a straightforward rescue and recovery operation. Investigators are already on their way to the scene. Theirjob will be to carry out a meticulous investigation, to establish exactly what happened. Tom burridge, bbc news. Andrew bowie is the mp for west aberdeenshire and kincardine and joins me now from stonehaven. Thank you forjoining us. We still dont have many details in terms of casualties several hours on from this accident. What are you hearing . Obviously, there are lots of reports coming from the scene, but i think it would be unhelpful to speculate any more on what the casualty number it might be, or indeed the reasons why the train left the tracks and the first place. All our thoughts about the people affected, the families of the people affected, and of course an amazing Emergency Service personnel who are working on extraordinarily difficult circumstances in a very remote part of the countryside to rescue people who have been caught up in a terrible incident. Tell us more about the area they are working in and what the difficulties will be. It is an incredibly rural part of scotland, and as you will have seen on the footage, it is part of the world surrounded by farmland and forest, where the trainer cut through a divide in the land, and so getting to the train is incredibly difficult, but is why we have seen helicopters deployed to help rescue survivors, and the Emergency Services going through open farmland to get to the incident. But we are ana bit to get to the incident. But we are an a bit lucky in the north east of scotla nd an a bit lucky in the north east of scotland and that our Emergency Services are trained to deal with very traumatic incidents, going all the way back to the piper alpha disaster off shore, and that is why in aberdeen Royal Infirmary we have a trauma unit designed specifically to deal with Major Incidents such as verse, to deal with Major Incidents such as verse, so we to deal with Major Incidents such as verse, so we couldnt be in better hands than with the Emergency Personnel we have working with us right now. Hospitals are being stressed because of covid 19, but tha nkfully stressed because of covid 19, but thankfully we have moved on from where we were, is it your understanding that they have got everything they need . Understanding that they have got everything they need . We have all the resources they need . Absolutely. The nhs have obviously had an incredibly difficult you are dealing with the coronavirus pandemic on the pressure that has been put on our fantastic and its staff has been immense. I know to do with this incident on top of all that is incredible. But i have every faith that the staff working at aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and the staff on the front line right now dealing with the incident on the ground are the best we could possibly hope for, and the have the resources we need in aberdeen, given as it is a major trauma unit designed to deal with Major Incidents such as those. I am very confident our amazing nhs staff have the resources and it will be able to cope with this incident. Obviously, there will be a very detailed investigation into what happened here. Are there any questions that come to your mind at this stage . Yeah, absolutely, but i dont think right now is a time to be asking them. I think the focus right now has to be on supporting your Emergency Services, doing the job they are doing right now, risking people, getting to the incident, and im thinking very much of the staff in aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and obviously thoughts with theirfamilies infirmary, and obviously thoughts with their families and friends of all those who are caught up in the incident right now. Any hours, days and weeks to come there will be time to ask questions and find out exactly what went on on par, but right now i think all of our thoughts are to be our Emergency Service staff personnel and everyone affected by this terrible incident today. Thank you very much. The education secretary, gavin williamson, has made last minute changes to the way a level results in england are to be decided, following the outcry in scotland over estimated grades. Schools in england will be able to appeal on behalf of students wanting to use their mock results for university places orjobs, if theyre better than their official grades. Pupils can also opt to sit exams in the autumn. Education unions said it beggared belief that changes were being made now. The same system, which is also being used in Northern Ireland, will apply to btec results this week and gcse results a week later. The Welsh Government insists there will be no such problems in wales. Our education correspondent dan johnson reports. The stifling stress of exam season was replaced by the anxiety of an untried system. Of grades estimated by teachers and standardised across the country. And now there are more late changes, just a day before most results. In Northern Ireland and england, students who are unhappy tomorrow will now be able to appeal to keep their expected grade based on mock exams instead. Our concern was to make sure. Look, with the best model in the world, there will be students who fall outside it. And we didnt want any student to suffer disadvantage. We apologise to nobody for finding solutions, even at the 11th hour, to stop any student being disadvantaged by the system. And thats because scottish students faced that very disadvantage when 125,000 marks there were downgraded last week. Protests brought a reversal, which means teachers original estimates will now stand. Scottish students are pleased. It means their Overall Results are up 14 . But it leaves others, like these teenagers in hull, wondering how their grades will compare. Quite anxious, yeah, cos its quite a big phase, isnt it, getting results . Obviously its kind of a compromised situation this year. Its unprecedented and no ones ever experienced it before. Im feeling happy that i did well in my mocks and assessments, so ive done the best i could do, but i was really set on doing exams. So im a bit im concerned that i might get given something that i would have achieved higher if id sat my exams, really. I believe there are going to be winners and losers in this. I am concerned, as a principal, with the release last night about the use of mock results, and i worry what message that is may be sending to us as principles of colleges. I worry if they apply formulas based on previous years, as i said, some students are going to gain from that, some are going to lose out. And we need to give the students the best possible chance, dont we, to progress on. Mock exams are done in very different circumstances. Some students dont even have a grade to appeal for. The fear is this late tweak to the system might not be enough to prevent the overwhelming sense of unfairness that led to the u turn in scotland. This is a complete fiasco. It was obvious that this was going to be difficult. But its been weeks or months in the coming. An 11th hour decision that has caused widespread chaos amongst teachers ive been speaking to, families and young people. It smacks of incompetence. Wiping away standardisation in the scottish results makes it difficult to compare with previous years, and if the rest of the uk doesnt do the same, there is even more inconsistency. If what youre going to do is to say to the general public, in a year when young people have had less teaching, havent done revision and havent done exams, result across the country are going to go up 10 , many people would say, well, the risk and that is that a grade a in this year doesnt feel like a grade a last year. Now, the english system is determined to do that, which is why those teacher predictions arent a predictions. They have been worked through rigorously across a team of teachers, then theyve been standardised by the exam boards. The Welsh Government has tried to reassure a level students that its modelling is fair, with nearly half of their final mark based on last years as level. Universities are also promising flexibility and understanding in a year of unrivalled challenges. The real test tomorrow will be how big the downgrades are, and which students they affect. Dan johnson, bbc news. Im joined now byjules white, head of tanbridge House Secondary School in horsham in west sussex. Thank you forjoining us. What you think about their alleged change . M is really not very good. It has made eve ryo ne is really not very good. It has made everyone feel even more uncertain than they already were. I think we had to recognise the government did not make the situation, they were in a difficult situation. Students couldnt take final a levels and gcses, but we had a process in place which was not going to be perfect, but it was reasonable. There could have been something that the government had planned for any greater time and more detail, but to start making last minute changes, particularly those related to mock exams, i really, really poor. Some stu d e nts exams, i really, really poor. Some students will not have taken mock exams, others might have told what questions and topics were coming up. The whole system smacks of unfairness. It is a really, really shambolic thing. I couldnt believe it when i was informed last night about these late proposals. It when i was informed last night about these late proposalsm it when i was informed last night about these late proposals. It is anticipated that nearly 40 of students greats had been downgraded. That is out of a total of around 700,000 exams having been taken, so it is going to be nearly 300,000 grades that will have changed. What do you think the best solution is in the situation . think to start but, we have got to look at the overall process. The problem is we have this once in a lifetime to auto examp system, and i think that you have heard and we also have things like as, we are to have modular exams, and then we wouldnt be in the situation. We have to think about it referred. I know youre talking about systemic in the long run, but talking specifically about what happens now, because these are kids who are bullied. In the short term, we have to make sure that stu d e nts term, we have to make sure that students have the right of appeal. We may need to introduce extra headroom to make sure particularly disadvantaged children arent further undermined. We need to ask universities to make sure they are sympathetic to ensure youngsters can make for the plant is getting on to university. We also have to think ahead to gcses. We need to have clear messages from the government. We need to avoid all of these last minute situations. The government didnt even communicate with her teachers or professional association. We just had to sprung upon us. We cannot work in that way. The other points that will be dealing with children and families. These are the hopes and dreams, and it is just not good enough i would have been treated. There are ways forward , have been treated. There are ways forward, but it is a very difficult situation and it has been made worse by your citys announcement. How are you feeling about your School Results tomorrow . My school is 11 to 16, so we have gcses, but im hearing from colleagues up and down the country that there had already seen significant variations like the one that you spoke of. We want to make sure that things are right for children, and i think that were going to have to make sure that government, schools and families Work Together. They may have to be some slight delay in how awards are finally says, because the situation at the moment is just not sustainable, and it not tenable. Thank you very much. And at four thirty this afternoon well answer your questions on the changes to the way a level and gcse send them in to us. The headlines on bbc news. A Major Incident is declared after a train derails near stonehaven in aberdeenshire. First minister Nicola Sturgeon says there are reports students in england may be able to use their mock exam scores if theyre unhappy with their a level grades, in a change announced just ahead of tomorrows results. The uk is officially suffering its biggest recession on record the fall in output caused by the covid 19 pandemic is on course to be one of the worst among major economies. The british economy suffered its biggest slump on record as the covid 19lockdown pushed the country into recession. Official figures show the economy shrank by more than 20 between april and june. Household spending plunged as shops were ordered to close, while factory and construction output also fell. It means the uk is now officially in recession for the First Time Since 2009. Our economics correspondent andy verity reports. Blenheim palace, in oxfordshire, one of the must see sites in chinese tourist guidebooks. We now know the biggest recession on record was already under way in february when covid was still seen as just a chinese problem. This would have been a busy period for Chinese New Year tourism. We expect across february to lose about 5000 chinese visits. That would be about 10 . Back then, its managers didnt imagine the economy was about to go through its biggest shock since the palace was built, three centuries ago. After shutting in lockdown, it reopened as soon as possible, but the fall in visits, and therefore income, have hit its finances hard. Its been hugely disruptive, for someone like those you need about 70 of your visitors to break even. And then the rest of those visitors pay for maintenance, restoration and the big, ambitious projects like the dredging of the lake. We are currently at 50 , so we are deeply in the red. As the government imposed full blown lockdown in the Second Quarter of the year, the sectors, too, when three record slumps like construction, down 35 . 0h, goodness. Its been a challenging four months. We had a great growth plan up until february or march. And in the lockdown, when coronavirus happened, overnight we saw a 50 reduction in projects, live projects were actually being put on hold. Weve just gone past dealing with the uncertainties of remain and brexit, and we are still starting to find our feet again, and this happens. To say this recession is off the charts wouldnt quite be accurate. You can just about keep it on your chart if you do one that looks like this. That dip, over on the left, is the Global Financial crisis. At the time, the worst slump for 80 years. But you can see this line, closest to me, that is what we have just been through. And its far larger. Overall, the uk economy shrank over six months by an unprecedented 22 , a slightly smaller drop than spain, but more than twice the size of the recession in the united states. We are seeing economies in other nearby countries recovering more quickly than they are in the uk. That is of deep concern, because it suggests thatjust as with the health response, where the uk has been an outlier, we are becoming an outlier on the economic response as well. This morning, the chancellor defended the governments record, but acknowledged there was worse to come. If you look at our economy, social activities, for example going to have a meal, go shopping, go see a movie, those kinds of activities comprise a much larger share of our economy than they do for most of our european cousins. And in a situation where we have locked down, shut down those parts of our economy for three months, almost, for a significant period of time, its unsurprising that has had an outsized impact on our economy. In june, as lockdown restrictions were eased, the economy did grow by a record for a month of 8. 7 . But it is still more than 17 below where it was at the start of the pandemic. Andy verity, bbc news. Lets talk to our business correspondent, ben thompson, whos in high wycombe town centre. He is talking to people about the state of the economy. What is so interesting, and you hurt it there, it is about how economies now start to recover, local economies, places like this. You heard from the chancellor, like this. You heard from the cha ncellor, restau ra nts like this. You heard from the chancellor, restaurants cashing on that eight out to help out a scheme that eight out to help out a scheme that means that means that people are getting some incentive to get back and it is helping businesses recover some business they lost during lockdown. Also by questions about the end of the unfurlough scheme, also about what demand will look like over the months ahead. More people have enough money to go out and spend even as those lockdown restrictions are is . Mark runs a firm around here, in my search company. Get me a sense of what you have done over the last few months, because it has been pretty tough for businesses, but particularly one like yours. It has been incredibly difficult for us this year, we were forced to close in march, and we saw the demand drop offer our services are people more uncertain about what was going on. Being closed performance, we had to put the entire team on a follow. For those who were lucky enough, some of them didnt even get that if they were laid off. We have been able to retain the majority of that team and they have all come back to us as we reopen autos on the 30th ofjuly, but we have a really, really really long road ahead to make sure it is safe to serious and that the customers are feeling ready to come back and have that massage. You also have to be aware of where your staff are, the safety of your staff, and you were talking to me about having to put them in parables. And they are not able to work to full capacity even when they are about. Some of them were doing seven or eight hoursa some of them were doing seven or eight hours a day when we close. Clearly, having not done that for so long, we have to start him on reduced hours to build up stamina. But we have put them in bubbles, so that therapists are on two different ends of the deck with separation, so the limited and i seconder, so even with the demand being there, we cannot go to capacityjust yet, and it will be a long time since we can get to that point. The furlough scheme helps us, but that will come to an end in a couple of months. Consumers responding . What are they telling you . Consumers responding . What are they telling you . Do consumers responding . What are they telling you . Do they feel confident about spending on Something Like a mass us . Do they the money . A lot of peoples attitudes have changed in terms of their understanding of the importance of their own well being. A lot of customers who have been working from home for many months sitting behind that dining table and not the best work set up for them, and also a lot of Mental Health service that has happened over the la st service that has happened over the last four months. People are realising that the benefit of a massage is definitely worth the amount that it is to come in and she is. A lot of work ahead for you, but you do good to talk to. Best of work with at all. Thank you. All sorts of businesses we have been speaking to today about how they are responding and how they can be part of that economic recovery. We know the economy picked up and me are some businesses reopen, and then again in june when nonessential retailers reopen. The star wasnt enough to cancel out some of the big losses we saw during lockdown. The economy is about 17 smaller than it was but all of this began back in february, so clearly a lot of work still to do. But what is interesting and a place like high wycombe, normally about 10 of people who love it here would commute to london every single day, taking that money with them. What they have found, a lot more people working from home and spending locally, and that is good news for the local economy, but also for the National Economy as well. Senator Kamala Harris has become the first black woman on a president ial ticket in us history Afterjoe Biden selected her as his running mate. The Democratic Party campaign has said they will Work Together to restore the soul of the nation. They face the encumbent donald trump in the vote in november. He has said he is surprised byjoe bidens choice, saying Kamala Harris did very poorly in the primaries. David willis reports. In Kamala Harris, joe biden has chosen a black running mate 22 years his junior. The first woman of color ever to appear on a major partys president ial ticket. Born in oakland, california, the elder daughter of an indian mother and a jamaican father, Kamala Harris was a Public Prosecutor and a california senator before launching her own campaign for the democratic president ial nomination in january last year. She dropped out of the race in december. Announcing his choice of running mate, joe biden called her a fearless fighter for the little guy and one of the countrys finest public servants. She vowed that he would unify the American People and build a country that lives up to our ideals. Theyve not always seen eye to eye, however. In the first democratic primary debate, she rebuked him for speaking warmly of senators who had once defended racial segregation. You also worked with them to oppose bussing. And, you know, there was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her Public Schools and she was bussed to school every day. And that little girl was me. Thats a mischaracterisation of my position across the board. I did not praise racists. Kamala harrisjoins the democratic ticket at a time of unprecedented crisis in america as the country grapples with the thorny issues of Police Brutality and racial injustice. Since the death of george floyd, shes toughened her stance on police reform, but remains, in essence, a centrist like joe biden. Voters rejected harris. Although the Trump Campaign is already seeking to portray her as a radical left winger. And President Trump called her selection a surprise. I think a lot of people were saying that might be the pick. I was more surprised than anything else because she did so poorly. Many people did much better than her in the primaries. She did very poorly in the primaries. And thats like a poll, you know, thats like a poll. Were he to beat donald trump in november, joe biden would be the oldest person in American History to become president. Thus, there is speculation that he might choose to only serve one term. That could leave Kamala Harris, the front runner, to lead her party into the president ial elections four years from now. David willis, bbc news, los angeles. Officials in new zealand are investigating the possibility that its first covid 19 cases in more than three months were imported by freight. The countrys biggest city, auckland, was placed back into lockdown after the cases were discovered yesterday. Shaimaa khalil has been following developments from sydney. They think that one of the auckland frozen good stores, where one of the family members who tested positive had been working, could be the answer to the source of the infection. Up until now, the actual source is still unknown, but we understand that investigators are looking into surface testing into that frozen goods store to find out whether the virus has been imported by freight. The director general of health said that the virus may have survived those refrigerated circumstances. We are waiting to see results of those tests. And that is really the main concern of Health Officials at the moment, finding out the origin of those cases to try and control them. A couple of other worrying developments, really, as auckland spent its first of three days back in level three lockdown. One is that we now know that there are four probable cases linked to the infected family two relatives and two co workers all showing symptoms and are awaiting test results. The other is that it has emerged that two of the family members to have tested positive for covid 19 have actually travelled outside auckland. So, that is also worrying Health Workers as well. So, all in all, i think it is a difficult time for new zealand, that has been previously seen as a Success Story notjust containing the virus, but actually eliminating it at one point, and that is no longer the case. Now its time for a look at the weather. You probably already noticed how humid the airfield, and that moisture can power some massive thunderstorms, storm sat through this evening could bring flash flooding to parts of england and wales. The satellite picture shows a number of storms across north west france. These could affect parts of southern england, but there is a more subtle boundary, and along this storms are going to kind of want to develop later on this afternoon. It is quite late in the day, so for most of this afternoon, it is dry, hot, sunny, humid. Temperatures into the mid 30s, and murky around the coastal areas. The trouble comes this evening and overnight. Across wales and the midlands in particular, but across parts of southern england, lots of thunder and lightning, but as the torrential nature of the ring that poses the risk of some flash flooding. That is the latest weather. Hello, this is bbc news. The headlines. A Major Incident is declared after a train derails near stonehaven in aberdeenshire. The uk is officially suffering its biggest recession on record, the fall in output caused by the covid 19 pandemic is on course to be one of the worst among major economies. Senator Kamala Harris makes history after shes named asjoe bidens president ial running mate the first black woman to be a candidate for Vice President. As new zealands largest city is put back into lockdown experts investigate whether coronavirus could have re entered the country through freight shipments. Sport and for a full round up, from the bbc sport centre, heres holly hamilton. Good afternoon. This weekends super League Matches involving hull fc and salford have been postponed. It follows a number of positive tests for hull players after the two teams met on sunday. Our reporter simon clark is at hulls training ground. Six players and two members of the Coaching Staff tested positive for covid 19 with coronavirus, and it was a stipulation that the club could not train it today. In fact, thatis could not train it today. In fact, that is just the first of the implications because all of the positive players now have to quarantine for ten days in accordance with the government guidelines. That takes to the 21st of august. In between times, how large is to be playing castleford at a neutral st helens. As you can see, there is nobody here, nobody to talk to, but earlier, the Club Chairman spoke to the bbc. He has been on the radio. What it appears is that one of the playerss newborn baby had to require hospital treatment and he has them coming on saturday for some treatment with symptoms being sent home. I think it is probably gone from there, into the physio and then into the players. These tests came to light with hull in the dark blue shirts, they lost heavily. As a consequence, salford, who have negative tests have been told that their players involved in that game have two self isolates for 14 days and presumably, the same will apply to the non infected hull fc player as well. Joe root says James Anderson is likely to play in the second test against pakistan tomorrow. There was speculation about his place afterjust one wicket in the first test win but his captain has faith in englands all time leading test wicket taker. The team wont be named until tomorrow but root says his side will have to improve despite their heroic win at old trafford. So the performance and at last innings with outstanding, i thought we played extremely well, set the game up with those two guys in a partnership and they were very intelligent in the way that they constructed the whole innings. But i do think there are areas we can improve on, but first with batting, their attacks as the two passages of bull playing where we were way below our normal standards and what we expect. So definitely we want to make sure we get that right this time around and that we are more consistent over the four or five days of this game.
