Emergency services in parts of southern australian have said its now too late for people in the path of wildfires to evacuate. Yesterday, tens of thousands of residents and tourists were told to leave due to worsening conditions. Officials are predicting a day of extreme danger with soaring temperatures, thunderstorms and a change of wind direction. Lets get the latest now from our reporter shaimaa khalil, whos in sydney. Shaimaa, a crisis showing no sign of abating . Condition sound brutal. They are brutal, and we have been hearing from authorities that we are only halfway into these brutal conditions. We have already seen temperatures soared to a0 celsius. We have seen winds grow very strong and change direction, which is what is really concerning many firefighters in victoria at the moment. In the last couple of hours, we know there is an emergency Fire Evacuation warning has been issued to an area near melbourne in the north of the city. But the area that bore most of the brunt of the fires in victoria has been an area which has been popular with tourists. We have 30,000 people holidaying there. Many have been told to evacuate. 0ne of them told us how she evacuated her hotel. We were on the beach on sunday afternoon and we got this Text Messages saying to evacuate. At that point, everything seemed calm stop it didnt seem urgent and all the locals and hoteliers and shopkeepers were having business as usual. We were getting messages that the locals didnt seem alarmed, so for some time we didnt know what to do. It was the equivalent of asking cornwall to leave on bank holiday in august. This is the size and scale of the fires in the area. We know the main highway, or huge chunk of it has already been closed as firefighters are saying conditions are still quite dangerous in that area. Shaimaa, thank you. We will follow that throughout the day on the bbc. In the last few minutes a british woman has been found guilty of lying about being raped by a group of men in cyprus six months ago. A District Court ruled the woman, aged 19 at the time, had lied about being attacked by israeli teenagers in the Holiday Resort of ayia napa. She was arrested after police said she withdrew her accusation but the woman claimed she retracted her statement under duress. She has been found guilty of causing public mischief and is expected to be sentenced next week. We hope to speak to a reporter inside the court in the next hour. Police in sussex are into the tenth day of searching for a father of four who disappeared after a night out with friends. Firefighter Anthony Knott hasnt been seen since the 20th of december. His fiancee says she feels numb, not knowing whats happened to him. Our correspondent, james waterhouse, is outside lewes Police Station for us. What do we know about this case . The police are still looking for information from the public, arent they . They are. In their words, this is an unusual case because of the length of time that Anthony Knott has been missing. He was last seen ten days ago at a christmas do at the lamb pub close to him. He left at 7. 15 for no reason. 0fficers the lamb pub close to him. He left at 7. 15 for no reason. Officers say they dont suspect any criminal activity and they have no evidence to suggest that he left the town of lewes, which has posters of anthony dotted all over the place. The search has focused on an open air pool as well as the river 0use because at the time, the area was affected by flood water. He was dropped off at the christmas do by his fiancee, lucy, who says she is desperately looking for answers. He isafamily desperately looking for answers. He is a family man. He loves hisjob, his friends, his kids. It is christmas. This isnt something that he would intentionally do. He wouldnt want to stay away. That is why we are extra worried, because it is just not like why we are extra worried, because it isjust not like him. And we are just thinking the worst. So in an attempt to dig peoples memory, Police Officers have released cctv of anthony leaving the pub, walking up of anthony leaving the pub, walking up the road and then walking down half an hour later, and 20 minutes after that, his mobile phone switched off. They are focusing on the style of his walk, he apparently walks in the balls of his feet, making it a distinctive way to work. We spoke earlier to a detective inspector of sussex police, who says he is keeping an open mind. Today we will have searches out on the ground again. We will have officers doing house to house in the vicinity and cctv swe e ps house to house in the vicinity and cctv sweeps and trawls. We will have detectives back at the Police Station searching cctv to see if it helps us find anthony. As john said there, the search will now focus in area north of lewes which was previously flooded. They thank the public for their support, but urge them to stay safe while trained officers try and deal with a complicated investigation. Thank you for bringing us up to date. Ben is with us this morning, talking about high street shops and the scale of closures over the last few months. Good morning. Yes. Thats right. It seems like ive been sat here at least once a week this year talking about the difficulty that high street shops are facing. Well, now its official. The centre for Retail Research have been logging which stores have gone. Theyve crunched the figures and this is what theyve found. More than 16,000 shops pulled down their shutters for the final time in 2019 thats about 61 shops every working day. Its a rise of almost 1,500 from the number of stores that closed in 2018. The situation was particularly bad for the large retailers the likes of debenhams and mothercare. They closed almost 6,000 shops, up 80 on last year. Just over 10,000 independent retailers also closed in the same period. There are many reasons. Rent and rates are one of the biggest things. There are also worries about the economy. But also infrastructure issues like roads and pedestrianisation and whether that has contributed to fewer people going into towns and city centres. Of course, the internet is one of the big things, e commerce taking business away from traditional high street stores. But there are also challenges just to get people through the door. So a lot of businesses are now trying to work out what the high street should be. Perhaps it shouldnt just out what the high street should be. Perhaps it shouldntjust be about retail, traditional shops where you buy something. Maybe it can be about experiences, health care, cinemas, barbershops that sort of thing get people into a town centre and hopefully while they are there, they might buy something as well. And just a sense of what we have lost on the high street, some familiar names have disappeared over the last few yea rs. Have disappeared over the last few years. There they are. But it is also independent shops which are really struggling and there are few signs of it changing anytime soon. We will see what happens in the next thank you. The mayor of new york has announced a series of measures to tackle what he calls a crisis of anti semitic attacks. Writing in the guardian, the shadow business secretary says labours compromise solution on brexit and and a lack of trust among voters was partly to blame for its election defeat. Now, we both love a dog walk, dont we . And having a chat. And then these things came together. Back injanuary, i went on one with our winnie which led to a pretty incredible story. Yes, dan met tony foulds in endcliffe park in sheffield. Tony was just a boy when a plane carrying 10 us servicemen crash landed in the park back in 19aa. For years tony has tended the memorial, and he told us he wanted the men to be honoured with a fly past on the 75th anniversary of the crash. A few tweets and a few phone calls later. Well, many of you watched what happened. Weve been to catch up with tony to look back on what turned out to be a memorable year. This is where i was when i spotted you nearly a year ago. Yeah. I dont know why, but ijust. We stopped and we had a chat. We had a chat. We saw this plane circle, it was just over the rooftops. As it came over, i dont know whether it was the pilots or whether it was a bomb. On that side, went like this. Now, we went back, 8 year old, we thought they were waving. And the next thing we knew. Boom and i thought. Good gracious. I could have not been here if them lads hadnt have gave their lives. Ive been doing it all these years. There was nothing here, just a stone. For you, its all about these ten men and their families. I know what you do want is, you want to make sure that on that 75th anniversary of 22nd of february this year, you would love some sort of fly past over this memorial to mark the occasion. Yeah, yeah. When i left, do you remember, isaid, tony, do you mind if i put it on twitter . You said, whats that . I had no idea what. I still dont know what it is that was the day that started such a beautiful year. It gives me great pleasure to say look to the skies on 22 february for a very special fly by. I mean, at my age, you dont to have a year like this. A lot of people were saying, 0oh, when is it . And i told them when we were starting this. Oh, thats a bit early. You know, i dont know whether id get to that. And i thought, oh, dear, here we go. Im going to be on my own, talking to no one. What im about to show you has been seen by millions of people round the world. But youve not seen it yet. This was the day that we did the flyover. From when we heard about it, its been a huge build up, everyone on the base has been supportive. Were all really excited about it. Every day, we honour those whove gone before us. But when we have an opportunity to do something on the commemorative date like this, its an absolutely amazing opportunity. It is our honour to thank mr tony foulds and the city of sheffield for preserving the legacy of those brave men who tragically lost their lives 75 years ago today. Applause. Cheering. Theres you, look. Look at your face, tony. These people have come because youve told the story of these ten men, and youve told it so well. All this for these lads. To see how many people have actually taken note, theyre family, they are family to me. What do you think now, watching that back . Did you realise how big the crowd was that day . Cant believe it, can you . All that from a dog walk, tony. Yeah and to think that for 75 years nobody knew, and then youve got not one, but ten planes coming over. To honour these lads, and ifelt ever so proud. Has it changed the way that you think about these ten lads . I shall never leave them. And i have a little plot down behind, so i am staying with them. You have done them a Great Service and theirfamilies a Great Service for a long time. Wherever i go, most people want to talk to me about you it is the same with me. Is dan coming . What is he doing . And of course, now, its not dan. It is Arnold Schwarzenegger and danny devito the twins devito and schwarzenegger. Ub devito. I will be arnie so many people from all over the world now go and visit. They have a chat. He talks to kids about what happened in the war and they ask him questions. Its been really lovely to see, and all from a conversation on the dog walk. Im going to go on more dog walks in 2020 |j on the dog walk. Im going to go on more dog walks in 2020 i realise i have spent most of my time going on dog walks and chatting to people over the last few days. With my dad, every few minutes i am stopping. Too much chat i have not spent as much time as you with your dad, but i feel there is probably a theme. The other wonderful thing is the number of our viewers who have followed that story and then get in contact and have enjoyed it. They have been in touch about so many things over the year, said thank you for that. Well get the weather from carol in a moment, but before we do, we just want to show you a few photos of last nights sunset youve sent in. Leah snapped this scene of edgeley in stockport. Christine captured the sun going down at ramsey st marys in cambridgeshire. And scott took this shot of the sky over saltburn by the sea. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning, everyone. It is a chilly stuff for some, but mild for others. It might surprise you that it is mildest across the highlands of scotla nd it is mildest across the highlands of scotland at the moment and cold est of scotland at the moment and coldest as we come towards the south of england. Today will be generally mild, but we do have rain to get rid of first across scotland and Northern Ireland. Through the course of the day, it will weaken and be more patchy by the time it gets to northern england. Ahead of it, we have mist and fog patches which were clear. And where you start off with clear. And where you start off with clear skies, you are likely to hang onto them. Temperatures are not bad for this stage in december. This evening, our weather front continues to sink southwards, eventuallyjust a band of cloud. Under clear skies further north, it would be a much colder night than the one which has just gone, with some of us getting below freezing. For a new years eve 01 below freezing. For a new years eve or hogmanay, depending where you are, it is a cloudy start to the day across wales, also southern england and the midlands. But we are looking at brighter skies and sunshine across the midlands, northern england, parts of Northern Ireland and scotland. If you are going out to see any fireworks or visiting friends, we have clear skies initially across northern and eastern parts, with patchy fog across eastern scotland and north east england. The cloud will be encroaching through the evening. For new years eve, wrap up warmly under clear skies, but it should be mostly dry. Dont forget the fog patches. For new years day in the daylight, we have a ridge of High Pressure in the south. Wheezy in the north, and most will have a dry day breezy in the north. He could have the odd spot of rain. Temperature wise, a bit lower than we are looking at on monday and tuesday, but still not bad for this stage in january by tuesday, but still not bad for this stage injanuary by then. If you are travelling on thursday, we are looking at possibly severe gales across parts of northern scotland, which could transfer into central scotla nd which could transfer into Central Scotland later in the day. Lets return to our top story now. Emergency services in parts of southern australia have said its too late for people in the path of wildfires to evacuate. Officials are predicting a day of extreme danger with soaring temperatures, thunderstorms and a change of wind direction. Lets speak to Luke Heagerty from the Country Fire Authority in melbourne. I know we have spoken to you before. What is the situation now . Since we last spoke a couple of weeks ago, we have seen a number of fires spread across the east gippsland region of victoria, a heavily forested area. And the fires have spread significantly today and we have a large part of that region with residents and tourists who have been advised that it is too late to leave the area. Their opportunity to get out was yesterday, but today they are out was yesterday, but today they a re u nfortu nately out was yesterday, but today they are unfortunately now faced with having to shelter in their homes or other Solid Structures because these fires are burning severely this evening and will continue to challenge us in the evening, when we expect the wind change to move across that area. That means the fire will spread in a different direction and potentially threaten other communities. Sounds like a potentially terrifying situation. What is the advice you are giving people . People need to be inside. They need to make sure they have long sleeved shirts on to protect their body from any radiant heat so that the heat from the fire as it approaches, and they can also see if any new fires are stuck. With the gusty winds, these fires are throwing embers, leaves and bark. That is starting new fires. We also have lightning in the area, which is being generated from the fires themselves, with significant smoke columns that have been building and also other lightning in the area. That means there are new fires burning between the two major fires which are burning in the east gippsland at the moment. People need to be inside. All they can do is monitor what is happening around them. The safest places to be inside as the fire front passes. Luke heagerty, thank you for bringing that up to date and best of luck in the coming hours. Were talking jobs now and if i asked you which ones had grown or declined over the last decade, what would you say . The office for National Statistics says jobs on the increase are those in technology and programming, which are up more than 70 . Also on the increase arejobs for Marketing Directors and van drivers. But others are decreasing, including retail cashiers and checkout operators, which are down by around 30 . The bottom 10 jobs by size are coalminers, weavers, knitters and Chimney Sweeps. Its been a cloudy couple of days, but today i think we should see some sunny spells and some brightness. Were holding onto a lot of that cloud, but were also going to still keep those mild temperatures. So, this is the scene as we start the day this morning. Quite a cloudy commute, i think, for most until we start to see that cloud thin and break and some brighter spells coming through as we look to the afternoon. The temperatures still very mild for this time of year, up to 11 or 12 degrees. So, into this evening, again, were holding onto that cloud for quite some time, really. I think we will have some clearer periods through the evening and into the early hours, but it is going to stay fairly overcast and grey. We might see temperatures drop away to around 2 or 3 degrees celsius. Emergency services in parts of southern australia have said its now too late for people in the path of wildfires to evacuate. Yesterday, tens of thousands of residents and tourists were told to leave due to worsening conditions. Officials are predicting a day of extreme danger with soaring temperatures, thunderstorms and a change of wind direction. Writing in the guardian, the shadow business secretary says labours compromise solution on brexit and and a lack of trust among voters was partly to blame for its election defeat. Now lets catch up with the sport, and its a familiar theme, really. The video assistant referee played a huge part in last nights match with liverpool beating wolves. Wolves unhappy with the way the decisions went. Referee anthony taylors ruled that sadio manes goal should be disallowed for handball by adam lallana but var overruled it and the goal stood. Wolves then thought they had scored an equaliser, but pedro netos goal was ruled out because jonnys foot was offside in the build up. Very tight there. You dont get clarification of whats happening. They dont tell you whats going on. Were checking an offside. Ok, so who was offside . We dont know. We need to check. How far offside is he . We dont know. So its so, so tough to take. Its happened twice in the last two games. Weve had to play probably the best two teams in the world in the space of three days and these decisions are happening against us so its tough to take. Manchester city beat Sheffield United 2 0 at the etihad. The goals came from Sergio Aguero and kevin de bruyne. City are third in the table, 1a points behind liverpool and have played a game more. Chelsea had a stunning comeback to beat arsenal 2 1. The gunners were 1 0 up with less than ten minutes to go at the emirates when chelsea struck throughjorginho and tammy abraham. And after her success at the World Championships Fallon Sherrock will be the first woman to play in the world series of darts next year. Im excited for her, that is great news. She has done so well. Lets go back to a story that has broken in the last hour. A british woman has been found guilty of lying about being raped by a group of men in cyprus six months ago. A District Court ruled the woman, aged 19 at the time, had lied about being attacked by israeli teenagers in the Holiday Resort of ayia napa. Thank you forjoining us. Her legal tea m thank you forjoining us. Her legal team are claiming there was a clear breach to their mind of a right to a fair trial, how was the verdict met in the courtroom . Well, essentially, thejudge saw that in the courtroom . Well, essentially, the judge saw that all the defence witnesses were either. Sorry, its pouring down here. The defence witnesses were either unreliable or sought to reinforce the defences case which she said was based on essentially a lie by the british women. They disregarded any case made by the defence, especially with regards to a fair trial. Made by the defence, especially with regards to a fair trial. What does it mean for her now . Sorry, can you say that again . Im asking what it means for her now. We expect sentencing next week, what do you think will happen . Now we are waiting until the 7th of january when the sentencing is expected. We are not expecting an appeal by the defence. We are expecting there to be some prison sentence, maybe not enforced right away but we expect some prison sentence. That will be on the 7th of january. Some prison sentence. That will be on the 7th ofjanuary. We shall follow that very closely and bring an update to our viewers. Thank you for talking to us. Lizzie was in the courtroom today when that british woman was found guilty of the offence. Our next guest is a barber on a mission to make the world a better place one haircut at a time. Ged king has been cutting hair for the homeless in manchester since 2015, and has featured on bbc three s amazing humans series. Well speak to him in a moment, but first lets take a look at what he does. Just having that haircut, when you look good, you feel good. I feel brand new. I feel privileged, i do, i feel privileged. I am suffering but i am good, because people are getting the help. I am suffering but i am good, because people are giving me help. So, i was living in a hostel. It was hard, it was one room, nine beds, a mix between boys and girls. The beds didnt get washed, you got cooked out at half six in the morning, youve got to be back by ten at night. And then one of the lads in a hostel told me about skullfades, and how they do free hair cuts for the homeless. And at this point, i had no money, a big mop of hair on my head. So, i went down, got a haircut, got speaking to the lads there and he said, get yourself on a level two course and will give you a job in the shop. And thats how it all started. You were in the hostel at first . Yes. Same situation i was in. You have to be in there for months, dont you . The guys know the score, we gown them up, the first thing we do is pull their shoulders back. We want the positivity to affect each person. Give them a nice haircut, make them feel better, positive conversation. Weve got hats, gloves, scarves, wipes, selection box, torch, socks. Its a nice little kit, you know . Warm kit, just a little parcel to keep them warm. Youve took five years off me would you marry me . They laugh. Ive never had this done for me in my life. This is such a privilege, this, honestly. Have you all got food parcels, yeah . Everybody can do something. Everybody can. We are not amazing, its simply how it should be. Itsjust how it should be. Its going to take everybody at every level, businesses, charities, governing bodies, the general public, to all pull in the same direction. Thank you they cheer. He laughs. Ged king joins us now. Good morning. Thank you for coming on. How did you start doing this, cutting Homeless People is hair . |j started cutting Homeless People is hair . started about four years ago, i opened my shop which is five years old and after the first year, i felt unfulfilled. And unhappy. Being a Business Owner was always a goal of mine but when i arrived, when i achieved it, i couldnt understand why i wasnt fulfilled and why i wasnt happy. I seemingly had everything i wanted. So, i really thought about that and i looked and took time away, i took myself to the la ke took time away, i took myself to the Lake District and thought about it, why am Lake District and thought about it, whyaml Lake District and thought about it, why am i not happy, why am i not fulfilled . The why am i not happy, why am i not fulfilled . The reason why am i not happy, why am i not fulfilled . The reason was i wasnt contributing. Contribution is something well need to do, it makes us something well need to do, it makes us feel good. I decided to help the Homeless Community on that trip in lakes. At that time in manchester, it was getting so bad. At that time, nobody could ignore it. It seemed to come out of nowhere and there were people on every corner of every street. I didnt like that, and it deeply upset me to see that going on in my home city. Did that make quite a difference to you, as soon as he started cutting . The first guy, we offered anyone from the Homeless Community to come into our shop and they could access the service for free. Also if you are unemployed and you had a job interview, you could come and get tidied up. We still have clients now that talk about this now they are employed and its great. The first guy who came in, he had been living in a tent for two years. He tentatively walked in, its a very smart premises, he wasnt used to being in an environment like that and we reassured him and said, come in, its fine. We made him a coffee and we talked and shared stories. He got some really positive Human Connection which he wasnt used to and he enjoyed it. He left with a big smile. For me, that void inside me started to feel and thats when i really knew i needed to contribute andl really knew i needed to contribute and i wanted more of it. It made him feel better, it made me feel better. Know you are training people like him. Weve got a shop in stretford mall, that is staffed by people leading the care system, the prison service. It is a practical solution to combat the crisis. Weve been hearing from some people who would like to say thank you. Have a little watch. Ged has helped me a lot in the past and leading up to me starting to do barbering. When i left the army i had a bit of a difficult time and getting to the barbers shop was a bit of a safe haven for me. I would like to say thank you, ged and all the best for the future. If he wasnt doing this to people, we wouldnt be here today and we wouldnt be doing what we are doing on the streets, giving haircuts to the homeless and giving opportunities to get back into society. You are loved and cared for. I couldnt thank you enough, ged. Youve saved me and if it wasnt for you i would still be on the streets. I appreciate it so much. Thank you very much. I should say you didnt know that was going to happen what are you trying to do to me . Look at the difference that you have made. trying to do to me . Look at the difference that you have made. I am quite an emotional person. You look like such a tough guy. It is lovely. Also very tough thank you for that. That is amazing. You never really hear that. Fish cant see water. I am in that water, with the guys all the time, and you never really see that side of it. Quite surreal but lovely as well. Your vision doesnt end in manchester. You want to roll it out. Absolutely. This is all that is for me now. This is my purpose. It isa is for me now. This is my purpose. It is a practical solution to combat this crisis. Guys with skills, personal development, mindfulness techniques to thrive in a positive environment. We want to roll this out across the country. Everything has been done so far by me. I do everything, absolutely everything, but we are at the point where we need support. We want to grow this concept and get more people off the street. My goal is to put 150,000 people through this unique training andi people through this unique training and i wont stop until it is done. If it takes me 20,30, and i wont stop until it is done. If it takes me 20, 30, a0 years, i will achieve that, but we need help. You are making me cry as well thank you for making a difference. Really good to see you. Goodness me sun times breakfast takes you by surprise well get the weather from carol in a moment, but before we do, we just want to show you a few photos of last nights sunset youve sent in. John in doncaster snapped this scene over doncasters football ground. Heres tonys view of ramsey forty foot in cambridgeshire. And michelle took this shot at southsea. We have had so many pictures. Some have gone carols way as well. Sunsets and sunrises as well this morning. Thats right. Good morning to you. This is one of the sunrises but you can see a lot of folk. We have got fog around which will slowly lift as we go through the course of the day. For many of us it will be mailed with sunny spells but there is some rain. Some of us have already got that rain, moving across scotla nd already got that rain, moving across scotland and Northern Ireland, and it will be sinking steadily southwards, weakening as it does so. By southwards, weakening as it does so. By the time we get into northern england, it will be more patchy. We have got mist and fog across southern parts of england and the midlands. That will lift. Starting with clear skies. Good sunrises as we said. The chances are that you will hang on to clear skies. Maybe fairweather cloud building through the day. Sunny spells. Temperatures eight to 12 degrees. Through this evening and overnight, this band of cloud and rain sinks south, weakening, so it willjust be a band of cloud across southern england and wales. Patchy mist and fog forming. It will be a much colder night in the north of the country under clear skies compared to the knights just gone. For example, at five oclock this morning it was 12 degrees in del finney and tomorrow it will be closer to freezing. Tomorrow is new years eve, hogmanay. We start off with a lot of dry weather. A fair bit of sunshine. This cloud in the south, thick enough for parts of south western england to produce the odd spot of rain. We might see some of that getting into the Channel Islands and possibly as far east as dorset. It will not be raining all the time and not particularly heavy rain. Tomorrows temperatures down on today, particularly in the northern half of the country. As we go through the evening towards the midnight hour on new years eve, a lot of dry weather, clear skies in the north and east to start with, patchy fog in eastern scotland and north east england. For most it should be dry. If you are under clear skies, wrapped up warmly. Under the cloud it will not be as cold, but not looking too bad for any of the celebrations taking place. For the rest of new years day, daylight hours, High Pressure across us. Breezy day, daylight hours, High Pressure across us. Breezy in the north with across us. Breezy in the north with a weather front moving across, so in the north we could see a spot or two of rain. A fair bit of cloud new years day itself but some of us will see glimmers of sunshine and temperatures closer to where they should be on the 1st of january. Can you believe it . The 1st ofjanuary is just around the corner. Ijust cant believe it either thank you for reminding me. A whole new decade. Weve been talking this morning about some of the big name brands that have disappeared from the high street this year. One of the biggest of course was thomas cook. Bens been looking back at this story, havent you ben . Yes, thats right. The demise of the worlds oldest travel company was one of the biggest news stories of the year. Were going to talk to a former thomas cook staff member in a monent. But first, a reminder of how we broke the news back in september. 0ur headlines today thomas cook collapses after last minute negotiations to save the worlds oldest Tour Operator fail. All flights and holidays are cancelled. The Civil Aviation authority will now start the biggest ever peacetime repatriation, bringing home 150,000 stranded british holiday makers. It is deeply distressing to me that it has not been possible to save one of the most loved brands in travel. Thank you. Do you take personal responsibility . 20,000 jobs are now at risk including 9000 in the uk. Im truly gutted. I am genuinely truly gutted for my colleagues and all the passengers that we carried. Big questions still being asked about how and why thomas cook collapsed and it will have been a difficult christmas for lots of the staff. But there was good news for some of the employees who worked in the high street stores. They were all bought by fellow travel company hays. Paula sterling kelly spent 18 years at thomas cook and now manages the failsworth branch of hays. Good morning, paula. Thank you for coming in. We looked then at the news in september, when it broke. Take us back to then. A really difficult time, and difficult for christmas as well, coming when it did. Talk us through what happened. It was horrendous. For people affected it was devastating news that we woke up to that morning. It affected so many lives and it still has done. Many were lucky, we might say, being able to transfer to hays and you are now managing a branch of hays. How is that transition . A similar business. It was amazing. From the first phone call that i got asking if i wanted to work for hays and go back to my store with all my staff, it was absolutely amazing. When we got the keys and walked back into that store with my team, it was just an amazing feeling. A new lease of life. We tend to write off a lot of life. We tend to write off a lot of firms now and say we dont need that sort of Old Fashioned travel service but there were so many customers who still do and you are seeing that. Definitely. We have had loyal customers that come back in store. And they have seen the lights on in the store, they came in bringing cakes and gifts and things. And we have attracted a lot of new customers as well because of what hays have done for us. I have come back to the retail store to give us the opportunity and see what we are all about. It is a Bespoke Service personnel to our clients. It is very exciting. Give us a sense of the high street. We talk about it needing to reinvent itself, to give ita needing to reinvent itself, to give it a purpose, that people still need a high street for certain things. How do you adapt to do that . People still want that personal service, one to one. We do embrace the web and a lot of our clients, we are in direct contact with them through the web before they come through our doors. It is amazing what hays has done for us at the moment. You are at thomas cook since 2001 and now at hays. You have had a ringside seat for what has happened on the high street over 20 years. Give me a sense of what has changed. What has changed is footfall. The internet had a big impact. We went through ups and downs with it where it was affecting business. Now it is just giving us leads for new Business Advice to work in. Exciting times. What do your customers tell you they want . They want that personal Bespoke Service, definitely. Good luck with it. It is really nice of you to come in and tell us about it, paula. We are going to talk about the stories that have shaped the Business World and of course thomas cook is one of the biggest but nonetheless it has been a tough year on the high street. We will look at ways the high street might reinvent itself. Thank you. If youve been run ragged over the festive period. Do you feel like that . Yes and no. Now could be the time to take a really deserved rest. And what is arrest. What is resting . Writer and broadcaster Claudia Hammond says we should be taking rest more seriously. Shes written a book about the art of rest and shes here now to tell us more. Resting is very much an individual thing. It is not sleeping. It is what we do when we are awake. It is not necessarily the thing we enjoy most of all that the thing that gives us a break. It is an activity that will be different for different people that stops your mind wearing, that finally lets you do nothing, do something, but stop thinking about your to do list and those things that are crowding in and overwhelming are so much. Why is that important . It is really important to have rest. We know about taking state more seriously but we need to take rest more seriously. Half of the day is taken off work and stress related. And it is good for us cognitively. After people have had a break, evidence shows people are better at concentrating and their memories are better. We need to get the balance of things. This is not a charterfor laziness, to do nothing whatsoever and sitaround. Laziness, to do nothing whatsoever and sit around. It could be something very active that is restful, such as running. The top ten were reading, being in a natural environment, being on your own, listening to music, doing nothing, walking, daydreaming, about a shower, watching tv, meditating, mindfulness. Gardening was not in the top ten, surprisingly. mindfulness. Gardening was not in the top ten, surprisingly. I like gardening and i find the top ten, surprisingly. I like gardening and ifind it very restful. The moment i go out in the garden and i start deadheading plants, i forget about Everything Else going round my mind. We did research with a psychologist at Durham University and 18,000 people, some of whom were breakfast viewers, completed our questionnaire about it and these were the top ten activities that i have looked at in the book, and they were the things that people told us where the most restful for them. It is different for different people. It is surprising what some of them are. It is interesting that reading came top because we think of it as effortful, you have got to concentrate, that it ta kes you have got to concentrate, that it takes people away from that moment and away from their worries and that seems to be the key thing. Television is allowed to be restful. That was a bonus to me, to be honest. The thing that i found very interesting, for me for example, people think exercise is not restful that for me it is. For other people that for me it is. For other people thatis that for me it is. For other people that is the case and i am not alone in this. Not at all. 3896 of people put down walking and something they find restful and 8 put down running andi find restful and 8 put down running and i would, myself. Running is something where you have got permission not to think about the thing is worrying you. Permission not to work and to do jobs. thing is worrying you. Permission not to work and to do jobs. I like golf. That would be allowed. I switch off my brain and i listen to the birds. Yes, chatting and socialising came lower at 19 or 20. They might be things that people really enjoy, seeing their friends and family, they are not necessarily a lwa ys and family, they are not necessarily always restful. You talk about it in the book and making time to make sure you do whatever it is that you find restful. I would like people to come up with their own personal prescription for rest and give themselves permission to do that. I am now going to do for 50 minutes the thing that i find restful and i will not feel guilty about that. 15 minutes. People told us they felt guilty and frustrated when they rested because they thought they we re rested because they thought they were not allowed to do it almost. Rested because they thought they were not allowed to do it almostm is fascinating. It is called the art of is fascinating. It is called the art 0f rest. Is the problem with golfers that you cant do it in 15 minutes. I will go and practice my golf swing thank you very much. That is all for us today. Breakfast will be back tomorrow morning from six 00 59 23,976 4294966103 13 29,430 oclock. Goodbye
