The men in waiting ancelotti and arteta are in the stands, as their new sides went head to head at goodison. And, hes learning from a great britains Daniel Dubois has the ear of frank bruno as he moves towards a shot at a heavyweight title. He fights in london tonight. We start tonight with the death of Martin Peters one of englands heroes of 66. He was a west ham legend, and the club say that he passed away peacfully this morning at the age of 76, after a long pres sir geoff hurst stole the headlines with his hat trick illness. Sir geoff hurst stole the headlines with his hat trick in the 1966 world cup final, but for a while it looked like Martin Peters goal might win it before west germany equalised. Peters also won honours at west ham and spurs in a career that spanned more than 20 years. Natalie pirks looks back at his life. With all eyes on hurst, the danger from Martin Peters went unnoticed. It is a goal peters Little Wonder they called him the ghost. Theres Martin Peters, the man who scored the goal which could well win the world cup for england. It didnt of course, geoff hurst claimed that accolade. Many called the strike the forgotten goal, but he had a different take. If i hadnt have scored, we would have lost 2 1. It was an important goal. His journey to world cup greatness began seven years earlier, instead of following his fathers foot steps, west ham came calling. He made his debut for the hammers in 62. He won the european cup winners cup in 65. Sir alf ramsay said his style and ability was ten years ahead of his time, but he didnt receive his first cap until the may of 1966. By 1970, his legend at west ham was secure and he left for spurs in a deal that made his britains first £200,000 midfielder. With tottenham he won the league cup twice and the uefa cup. He left in 1975, moving to norwich. Despite making his debut at the age of 31, he still played more than 200 games for the club. He lived and breathed football. His family said they would find him practising headers in his sleep. There are fears heading the ball helped cause his disease. Like some of his former team mates, he had been suffering from alzheimers. In the last few years he had withdrawn from public appearances and alzheimers robbed him of many of his memories, but he remain one of only two english men to know the joy of scoring in a world cup final. The emotion was like being struck by lightning. It was unbelievable. It was fantastic. Hursts hat trick may have made history and bobby moore may have lifted the trophy, but peters left his mark on footballing history, on the day, so the saying goes, that west ham won the world cup well earlier i spoke to one of Martin Peters former team mates at west ham. Sir Trevor Brooking and started off by asking for his reaction to the news today. Even will be very sad. You know, martin, well lived locally as such. I was lucky as a young apprentice to join west ham in 65, when they won the cup winners cup and they had w011 the cup winners cup and they had won the fa cup the year before and in 66 we said west ham won the world cup, because of three lads there. Bobby and geoff and martin were key people. I was an apprentice when they were training and in fact made my debut at burnley with all three of those still in the team. What was he like as a person . I think the thing about martin was he, the best description i suppose, he was very humble. Hed talk about players and you know some like publicity. Martin wasnt like that. He was very quiet. He was a humble individual. Yes, they enjoyed the up world cup and whatever, but it only as each decade went by and england could never repeat it that the enormity of that tea m repeat it that the enormity of that team and the players there grew and so team and the players there grew and soi team and the players there grew and so i think you know people like martin and geoff were intrigued at suddenly how it grew more and more important. Martin never sort of revelled in it or anything. He was very low key. Revelled in it or anything. He was very low key. But very humble. And good company. But never you know went looking for any headlines. Good company. But never you know went looking for any headlineslj went looking for any headlines. was going to ask if he talked about it, but you said he was humble. He is still one of very few people to have scored for england in a world cup final. West hams joint owners said that his legacy for them wasnt winning the world cup, but it was more about the example he provided to all those who walked through the door of the west ham academy, is that something you would agree with and why would they say that . Anyone who goes to i any club academy, you wa nt to who goes to i any club academy, you want to encourage them to join and to look, to be able to progress in your career. At the time, west ham, yeah, they did 0k, your career. At the time, west ham, yeah, they did ok, but it wasnt one of big clubs, if you sort of looked at it now, it wouldnt be the top six as far adds sides as sides, but it was affectionately thought of. We played some great football and won some great games and lost some and martin was a very part with bobby and geoff in creating. They could never invest in a big enough squad to be winning the league. But martin then of the three left, was the first to leave. He went to spurs. He got trophies there. And you mentioned going to norwich and 200 games. If you speak to spurs and norwich people, they loved him, because of way he was committed on the pitch and the way he always had time for supporters off it and that was the big thing. He was that is why hummen was a great humble was a great word. He enjoyed his career, but never looked to make the most of it in the way some others do. Trevor brooking. Lets go to qatar, where liverpool are playing flamengo in the final of the Club World Cup. It finished 0 0 after normal time but the main incident of the game came in stoppage time. The referee awarded liverpool a penalty after sadio mane was brought down. But he then reversed his decision after looking at the var monitor and these are live pictures from doha, second half just underway. Because liverpool have scored. Theyre winning1 0 in extra time. Lets say, i think liverpool deserve to be ahead. Not only with that var decision. But they had so many chancesin decision. But they had so many chances in normal time. So decision. But they had so many chances in normaltime. So many chances. In the first half, it was a miracle it was still 0 0. In the second half, mane looked like it was going to be a penalty and overruled. But these are the live pictures. We can see the goal. Lets see the goal. Firmino the scorer. Redemption for him, because he missed a couple in normal time. For him, because he missed a couple in normaltime. There for him, because he missed a couple in normal time. There we go. Against a team from his home nation, firmino, these are the live pictures. Still 1 0. Firmino, these are the live pictures. Still1 0. Five minutes firmino, these are the live pictures. Still 1 0. Five minutes or so pictures. Still 1 0. Five minutes or so to go in the first half of extra time. And can liverpool hold out and clinch the Club World Cup. There is a long way to go. This would be liverpools first silverware of the season. Liverpools first silverware of the season. You can liverpools first silverware of the season. You can see liverpools first silverware of the season. You can see the action on bbc one. It is promised to be an exciting end to the match. Closer to home Manchester City closed the gap to 2nd, with a 3 1win over leicester at the etihad. Jamie vardy gave leicester the lead to extend his incredible scoring record this season. That was his 12th goal in 10 games. Riyad mahrez got the equaliser for city after half an hour, from a deflected strike. Ilkay gundogan put them 2 1 up before half time. And striker gabrieljesus made the game safe. City now a point behind leicester. But still 11 off leaders liverpool. In the Early Premier League game, there was an unusual situation at goodison park. Two caretaker managers in the dugout, with the two new permanent managers watching on from the stands. Everton announced Carlo Ancelotti as their new boss just an hour before kick off against arsenal, who themselves had confirmed mikel arteta as their new manager last night. In footballing terms though, the arrival of ancelotti was where the excitement ended, as adam wild reports. An early start. An hour before the lunch time kick off one arrival caught the eye. Carlo ancelotti now adding the evertonjob caught the eye. Carlo ancelotti now adding the everton job to caught the eye. Carlo ancelotti now adding the evertonjob to his extraordinary cv. Today, he was just here to watch. And he wasnt the only one. Mikel arteta was here as the new arsenal manager. An opportunity to impress the new bosses, or so you would think. This evertons best chance in a first half lacking any real meaningful chances. Arsenal similarly struggling to show their best. If either new manager was inspired by what they had seen, they were not showing it. The second half was barely a little brighter. Aubameyang forcing a save from pickford. At the other end, a good block got in the way of evertons biggest moment. Other end, a good block got in the way of evertons biggest moment. said it from day one, they will be wanting a world class manager and we have got one. I cant wait to start working with him. With him being in the stand, that will give us a lift. A new manager in the stands. That will give the team another ten yards and helped us. Duncan ferguson steps aside as does freddie ljunberg. The new managers have learned there is much work to be done. Lets go to Austin Halewood for the rest of todays action in the premier league. No one really threatening the top 3 in the 3 oclock kick offs today. A lot of them were all about the battle at the bottom and the biggest of all was between aston villa and southmpton. A huge game for these two managers. For dean smith and his villa side it was the start of a really important christmas. Three teams were below them before the game today nd they play all three in a row. But the game couldnt have gone much worse. 3 1 they were comfortably beaten by southampton at villa park. The game got off to the worst possible start for them with talismanjohn mcginn taken off with an ankle injury in the first 5 minutes. And not long after, southampton were ahead. Danny ings with his 5th goal in 6 games. Villas defence all at sea and its largely because of this moment at the start of the month. When tyrone mings went down with an injury. Theyve been without him ever since swipe and back theyve been without him ever since and back to the action today. They missed his presence in the box. Southampton doubling their lead through jack stephens. Before ings got his second goal of the match to seal a huge 3 points for southampton. Villa pulled one back through Jack Grealish the best goal of the game from the edge of the box. But it wouldnt be enough to get back into it, the win for southampton hauls them out of the bottom three and its dropped villa right down into it. Its its not june, its notjune, it is december, but it gives us a lift mentally also, because it is important to see we can win again and this was our third away win. I think that is ok. And we ta ke away win. I think that is ok. And we take the next game at christmas, it is difficult. We know it is a tough race. So heres exactly what that result has done to the table. Villa in the bottom three, now 3 points behind southampton. Norwich stay 19th after a defeat to wolves at carrow road. While bottom side watford play Manchester United tomorrow. Well elsewhere, there was another huge win for Sheffield United what a season they are having. Theyre now up to fifth in the table after they beat brighton 1 0 on the south coast. The visitors blew out of the blocks with john egan scoring in the first 10 minutes from close range. But moments later came a sight most Sheffield United fans will be sick of seeing this season it was ruled out for handball by var. We know manager chris wilder isnt a fan of the technology. But his side soon took the lead through 0li mcburnie. A clever finish from him after a long ball over the top. And in the second half, would you believe it another goal ruled out by var, this time for offside. But still Sheffield United hung on for the win. Theyve only lost one game away from home in all of 2019. And despite his clear frustration with var wilder was pretty pleased. Yeah, you have to take that disappointment. We have had that a few times, i think we are top of that table of disallowed goals, but rightly so, johns is unfortunate, it goes in and it has come up and brushed, grazed his hand. That is the letter of the law. The correct decision. And the second one was off side. We had to stick in, because we knew it was going to be a tough place to come. Everyone talked about it. Two of the lowest scorers in the league went head to head at st jamess park, so this one didnt look like it was going to be a classic, but it was a thrilling end for newcastle. A 1 nil win over palace. To be honest not a lot happened until the 83rd minute when Miguel Almiron scored the winner. A huge moment for him and the fans, becasue he joined the club in january, hes their record signing for around £21 million, but in 26 appearances in the premier league, he hadnt got off the mark until today. Heres how much the club loved it on twitter. Miggy in block capitals. So newcastle are now up to 9th now with 25 points. Steve bruce wasnt the most popular appointment, but his side are well ahead of where they were last season under rafa benitez. And bruce, of course, delighted with his striker. He came to the club at the back end of january and lit the place up with his trickery and his skills and day m, his trickery and his skills and day in, day out, he works and works. Today he has got the winner and i think we all are delighted for him as an individual. Sojust one more match to tell you about. Jay rodriguez with a late winner for burnley away at bournemouth. Lets have a look at whats happened in the scottish premiership today, and celtic remain 5 points ahead of rangers with a game in hand after they beat aberdeen 2 1. Rangers beat hibs 3 0 last night. Elsewhere there were wins for hamilton, motherwell and livingstone, whilst it was golless between stjohnstone and st mirren. These are live pictures from the clu b world these are live pictures from the Club World Cup final. Liverpool are leading 1 0. They have just kicked off the second half of extra time. Still 10 to off the second half of extra time. Still 1 0 to liverpool. Firmino scored the goal. And 15 minutes twoofr s between them and their second silverware this season. It is live on bbc one. But dont turn over yet. Exeter have moved top of the rugby unions premiership. The chiefs edged a real thriller at welford road beating leicester tigers 31 points to 22. It was leicester who led for most of the game. The defeat means they have just 4 points so far this season, and are in real trouble at the bottom. Rhia chohan reports. You count fault the festive atmosphere, but the tigers needed to get their premiership act together. Exeter had gone one over the line in the opening minute, but the tigers responded with some great work finding may. It continued. That sent the faithful into a frenzy. May got his second try and leicester went into the break with an eight point lead. But if your defence is fatigued, that is not enough. Exeter scored their second and leicesters quality play became a distant memory. Two exeter tries in three minutes and steenson converting for the decisive score. Exeters resilience left leicester damp and empty handed. Well in the days other games, saracens continue to claw back points, from their early season points deduction, with victory over high flyers bristol. Northamptons loss to sale, allowed exeter to leapfrog them at the top. And harlequins came from 17 points down, to beat wasps, whove lost 5 out of 6 this season. There was late drama in the pro 1a as the dragons beat scarlets. This late drop kick from fly half sam sam davies was the last kick of the game, and it secured the points for dragons in front of a raucous crowd at rodney parade. Wins elsehwere for munster and benneton, 0spreys and cardiff blues are playing right now. Lets have a look at some more sports headlines now. The two time world darts champion adrian lewis survived a scare to make it through to the third round of the pdc world darts championship. He came back from two sets to nil down to beat cristo reyes three sets to two. Fallon sherrock meanwhile is back in action tonight after her history making antics earlier this week. She became the first woman to win a match at the pdc by beating ted evetts. Tonight she plays Mensur Suljovic for a place in the third round. And usain bolt has been back on an olympic racing track. Hes not coming out of retirement, he was taking part in a ceremony to mark the official opening of tokyos new National Stadium which has been built for next years olympic games. Lets focus on boxing for a few minutes, because its a big night for heavyweight Daniel Dubois. Hes 22 years old, and widely regarded as one of the best british prospects coming up behind anthonyjoshua and tyson fury. He fights japans Kyotaro Fujimoto at the copperbox in london tonight, and boxing pundit steve bunce is there. Well he is 13 unbeaten, 12 have ended quick. But the key is and this is the crucial element, he is just 22 years of age. Let me assure you, if Daniel Dubois came from new york and he fought out of bronx, if he came from chicago and fought out of the south side, if he came from los angeles and fought out of east side, we would be raving and praising and be desperate to catch a glimpse of him. He is a 22 year old unbeaten londoner, in a business where most heavy weights, say this as loud as you like, reach their peak at about 30. The catastrophic bushfires continue to cause problems at sporting events in australia the latest being the big bash. The match between the adelaide strikers and sydney thunder which had to be abandoned because of poor air quality in canberra. Adeleide completed their innings, but the decision to call the game off came 4 overs into sydneys run chase. In a statement the league said that player, fan and staff safety was the number one priority. Elsewhere, how about this for a catch in the game between the perth scorchers and melbourne renegades. This is englands chrisjordan plucking the ball out of the sky for perth, as they won by 11 runs. Well worth a replay or two. He may have lost his job at spurs last month, but Mauricio Pochettino certainly hasnt lost his magic touch. Take a look at this. Hes currently in qatar for the Club World Cup, as a guest of fifa s Supreme Committee but found time for a game of footgolf. And as you can see, nailed a hole in one that is the impressive. If only his camera was in landscape, it would have looked better. We will finish with a few shots from doha. It is the second half of extra time for the second half of extra time for the Club World Cup, liverpool are leading 1 0. So in what, eight and a bit minutes, they will be winning their second silverware of the season. It is a big dealfor them. They want to win the league. But this would be good. It would be incredible, theyre on an amazing run, top of the premier league and it could be an amazing season. And flamenco have not been an easy team to beat. We will see you later on. Good night. But we have showers to replace it tomorrow. This is the cloud rushing in. Our next area of low pressure. We already have some active showers ahead of that. This is taking all of the energy from the atmosphere and giving us another significant of amount of rain in southern england and wales. Most places having five to 10 millimetres of rain. But in some places there could be double and given the ground is saturated, that will sit on surface. Mild except in the north, where we may have some frost. The fog will be the main travel hazard in central and northern areas. Elsewhere the rain being pushed away by this brisk westerly wind. Still low pressure to the north and still some showers to come on sunday. But we should see more sunshine around throughout the day. Once the rain clears. It just drags throughout the day. Once the rain clears. Itjust drags it heels in east anglia. For many once the fog clears and that will be a concern again, particularly for scotland and Northern Ireland and northern england. It takes a long time to clear at this time of year. Now, for the run up to christmas, it is not especially mild, it not particularly cold. It is where it should be temperature wise. And we may well escape by day any significant bouts of rain from monday to wednesday. But not by night. We have showers in the north and west and around that already of low pressure and this next one running into the south on monday. For day time monday, for many in eastern scotland and Northern Ireland, a lot of dry weather and this rain comes in through monday night. So wet again potentially in the south on monday.
