He was a west ham legend, and the club say that he passed away peacfully this morning at the age of 76, after a long pres sir geoff hurst stole the headlines with his hat trick illness. It was an important goal. His journey to world cup greatness began seven years earlier, instead of following his fathers foot steps, west ham came calling. He made his debut for the hammers in 62. He won the european cup winners cup in 65. Sir alf ramsay said his style and ability was ten years ahead of his time, but he didnt receive his first cap until the may of 1966. By 1970, his legend at west ham was secure and he left for spurs in a deal that made his britains first £200,000 midfielder. With tottenham he won the league cup twice and the uefa cup. He left in 1975, moving to norwich. Despite making his debut at the age of 31, he still played more than 200 games for the club. He lived and breathed football. His family said they would find him practising headers in his sleep. There are fears heading the ball helped cause his disease. Like some of his former team mates, he had been suffering from alzheimers. In the last few years he had withdrawn from public appearances and alzheimers robbed him of many of his memories, but he remain one of only two english men to know the joy of scoring in a world cup final. The emotion was like being struck by lightning. It was unbelievable. It was fantastic. Hursts hat trick may have made history and bobby moore may have lifted the trophy, but peters left his mark on footballing history, on the day, so the saying goes, that west ham won the world cup well earlier i spoke to one of Martin Peters former team mates at west ham. Bobby and geoff and martin were key people. I was an apprentice when they were training and in fact made my debut at burnley with all three of those still in the team. What was he like as a person . I think the thing about martin was he, the best description i suppose, he was very humble. Hed talk about players and you know some like publicity. Martin wasnt like that. He was very quiet. He was a humble individual. Yes, they enjoyed the up world cup and whatever, but it only as each decade went by and england could never repeat it that the enormity of that tea m repeat it that the enormity of that team and the players there grew and so team and the players there grew and soi team and the players there grew and so i think you know people like martin and geoff were intrigued at suddenly how it grew more and more important. Martin never sort of revelled in it or anything. He was very low key. Revelled in it or anything. He was very low key. But very humble. And good company. But never you know went looking for any headlines. Good company.
