By 1970, his legend at west ham was secure and he left for spurs in a deal that made his britains first £200,000 midfielder. 0h, oh, what 0h, whata oh, what a beautiful goal. What a good header that was from Martin Peters. With tottenham he won the league cup twice and the uefa cup. He left in 1975, moving to norwich. Despite making his debut at the age of 31, he still played more than 200 games for the club. He lived and breathed football. His family said they would find him practising headers in his sleep. There are fears heading the ball helped cause his disease. Like some of his former team mates, he had been suffering from alzheimers. In the last few years he had withdrawn from public appearances and alzheimers robbed him of many of his memories, but he remain one of only two english men to know the joy of scoring in a world cup final. The emotion was like being struck by lightning. It was unbelievable with everybody jumping all over you, it was fantastic. Peters left his mark on footballing history on the day, so the saying goes, that west ham won the world cup. We can talk now to sir trevor brooking, who played with Martin Peters at west ham. You know martin, well, he lived locally as such. I was lucky as a youngster, a young apprentice to join west ham in 65 when they won the cup winners cup and they won the cup winners cup and they won the fa cup the year before and in 66, we said west ham won the world cup, because of the three lads, bobby the hat trick and geoff the hat trick and i was lucky to be an apprentice when they were training and made i day buy with all three debut with all three in the team. What was he like as a person. The best description, he was very humble. He would talk about you know players and you know some publicity, he wasnt like that. He was very quiet. He was a humble individual. Yes, they enjoyed the world cup and whatever, but it was probably to be honest only as each decade went by and england could never repeat it that the enormity of that team grew. Sol that the enormity of that team grew. So i think you know people like martin and geoff were intrigued at how it grew in more importance. Martin never sort of revelled in it, he was very low key. But as i say, very humble and good company. But never, you know went looking for any headlines. I was going to ask you if headlines.
