Faster journies, news routes and more trains its all change on the railways from tomorrow. Protesters against italys far right party, the league, gather in rome for whats expected to be the biggest demonstration yet by grassroots activists that call themselves the sardines. Good evening, and welcome to bbc news. The Prime Minister has visited the north east of england to thank voters in traditional labour heartlands for backing his party. Borisjohnson met with supporters in newly conservative sedgefield tony blairs former constituency. The labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, is coming under increasing pressure to resign with immediate effect after his party suffered its worst Election Results since the 1930s. Our political correspondent, iain watson, reports. A Prime Minister is a familiar sight in these parts, though its usually been a labour not a conservative one. So where better for borisjohnson to rub his opponents nose in the election result than in tony blairs old Stomping Ground of sedgefield . I know that people may have been breaking the voting habits of generations to vote for us. And i want the people of the north east to know that we in the conservative party, and i, will repay your trust. So, what issues will he have to focus on if he is to retain the trust of new supporters . I hope he does a good job, he will get brexit done and i hope he gets the nhs done. Education and Everything Else he has promised. Mad hatter, really thats how he comes across. But who knows, he might sort it out. Jeremy corbyn was re elected in islington but his partys so called red wall was damaged or demolished in parts of the midlands and the north of england. He says he will stay on until his successor is elected but his long standing critics just want him to go. I dont think you can have the proper, deep reflection that we need to have under the leadership of a person who thinks that the programme is all right and he worked really hard on the only thing that was wrong was that the media did not like him and that the brexit message was wrong. When labour mps return to westminster next week they will be a much diminished group nearly 60 fewer of them than after the 2017 general election. The party is now looking for a new leader and a new deputy leader, and whileJeremy Corbyn has called for a period of reflection, in truth, battles are likely to rage over the reasons for labours defeat. And today, one of the leading figures in the leadership has announced that he is withdrawing from the front line. The new leader will come in place, appoint the shadow cabinet, i wont be part of the shadow cabinet, ive done my bit. We need to move on at that stage with the new leader, and i think we will be in a position where we are learning lessons and listening to people. What was it . It was notjust brexit, i think there was a long history of maybe a0 years of neglect. Next week, he will bring his brexit bill back to parliament, but for now, Boris Johnson is familiarising himself with territory that many thought would never go tory. Iain watson, bbc news. Would never go tory. And, iain is with me now. Would never go tory. Mean, the labour party reall still i mean, the labour party really still digesting thursdays body blow . Absolutely. The numbered us easily won, it was the lowest since 1935, so there are mps questioning whyJeremy Corbyn is still there as leader of the labour party, why he hasnt resigned. The argument made by Margaret Hodge there is that if you have a period of reflection, if you have a period of reflection, if you are not willing to reflect, then perhaps you need to step aside. I think that pressure will continue to grow from mps over the next few days, especially those who favour a quicker contest. Others are happy to have a period of reflection, they wa nt have a period of reflection, they want him gone before the may council elections, certainly, he will have a few months to take a look at some of the big issues that labour has to address. I think we will see a battle over the reasons for it labourss defeat. Before we even get to the new candidates of leadership and debris to leadership, they will want to be able to say that they can solve a problem that has been diagnosed. Is itJeremy Corbyn out of the party moving too far to the left . Is it brexit . Is it a mixture of those things . Asjohn mcdonnell was suggesting, perhaps people felt they were incumbents and neglecting their own base . I think these arguments need to be aired. At that point, we will then hear the people are likely to want to take over perhaps declaring. Jess phillips, somebody who has been a big critic ofJeremy Corbyn. Cure star marco might very strong on the brexit issue for stop at this stage, i think some of the supporters will be making criticisms, rather than throwing hats into the ring. That internal reflection could become quite ugly. They have already been calls for momentum to step away from the party . Momentum have already thrown down the gauntlet and say they are determined, they have around 40,000 members, they have been sending people into sitting constituencies to campaign. They say they are going to keep the labour party socialist, above all else, they will want to make sure, although they will want to make sure, althoutheremy they will want to make sure, although Jeremy Corbyn they will want to make sure, althoutheremy corbyn may be going, his politics do not go with him. Even to the left of the party, there are even to the left of the party, there a re lots of even to the left of the party, there are lots of arguments as to what should happen next. Whether a more charismatically leader is needed. Whether it should be a women, somebody like rebecca long bailey. Also, how they present their policies. Some agree with these radical policies on nationalisation, for example, but disagree during the election, thick and fast, so rapid that people couldnt take in what they were talking about. People on they were talking about. People on the left at least recognise there has to be a different presentation of the policies. Is there a possibility that we could see quite a widespread change in terms of what labour looks like . John mcdonnell has said that he will not be part of the cabinet, do you think that this is what the party does need all change . From john mcdonnell, point of view, there were some talk on the left of people wanting him to stand as party leader, some people think that he could be interim leader if Jeremy Corbyn went. But he seems to have made a decision that when a new leader comes along, he will step aside because he wants to change the generational shift in the labour party. He preferably wants to see a women 01 party. He preferably wants to see a women or somebody from a Younger Generation taking over, that too may change the front bench of the labour party and how it looks. What can we expect for the upcoming week . Mps get sworn in on tuesday, because there has been such a radical churn of them. Then, borisjohnson want to give the impression that he has now got momentum, the prime that he can get things done. On thursday, we get the queens speech, the programme for government. He will be coming back, trying to put these policies on policing and so on the fifa dog. Then friday, he will be pushing ahead with brexit. This time, he will succeed we think in getting his withdrawal bill through parliament, it is that at second reading, the second stage, it still has to go to the house of lords. Before christmas, he will be able to say that it christmas, he will be able to say thatitis christmas, he will be able to say that it is on its way of getting it done. And well find out how this story, and many others, are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10 30 and 11 30 this evening in the papers. Our guestsjoining me tonight are the deputy leader writer at the sun, olivia utley. And the editor of the political website, labourlist sienna rodgers. Passengers are being advised to check train times before travelling from tomorrow as major timetable changes are introduced. Rail Companies Say journey times will be cut, Services Made more frequent, and new routes added following investment in infrastructure and carriages. But concerns remain over whether there may be disruption during the transition period. Our business correspondent, katie prescott, explains. This is the nightmare scenario. When train timetables were changed in may last year chaos ensued. Standing room only as passengers faced cancellations, delays and overcrowding. But the organisation representing the train Companies Says this time things will be different. What were doing now is were looking at each other in the eye, whether it be train operators or infrastructure managers, and saying, are you really ready to put these new services on . And if they look as if they would impact either punctuality or reliability, they are pulled from being an additional service. We dont want to go through what happened last year. If the new timetable is a success, passengers like these could benefit from faster and more frequent services, with more trains and more carriages, meaning 1000 extra services a week, and some quite significant changes for some parts of the uk. Tomorrow will see the biggest timetable change on the Great Western Railway Network since the 1970s. The electrification of the line between london and bristol will shave 12 minutes off the quickest trains. The maesteg and conwy lines in wales will get sunday services for the first time. And there will be major improvements on the scotrail network, with Additional Trains in north east scotland, as well as extra seats between edinburgh and glasgow. Passengers are advised to check before they travel, as many train times are changing from tomorrow. Katie prescott, bbc news. A woman has been seriously injured, and another has suffered minor injuries after a stabbing incident in the hindley area of wigan. Greater Manchester Police responded to reports of a double stabbing at around 10 30 this morning. Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. Negotiations at the United Nations Climate Summit in madrid, continue this weekend, without an agreement in sight. Known as cop25, the summit was meant to decide on rules, for the implementation of the 2015 paris climate agreement. Many key issues were left open after last years summit in poland, and remain unresolved. Our environment correspondent, matt mcgrath, has the latest developments. Almost every country in the world signed the paris climate agreement in the french capital about four years ago. One of the terms of that particular pact was that every country should update their National Plans on cutting carbon by the end of 2020, the end of next year. All those countries have come to this particular cop, conference of the parties, here in madrid to actually work out the wrinkles in that plan, the timetable when theyre going to submit their plans, and to whom. But theyve run into major difficulties here, because a lot of the countries in the eu and small island states and many others feel that whats on the table is not ambitious enough. They feel that the science is very clear, the message from the streets is very clear countries need to be doing more. What they have seen it written down on the text here, theyre not very happy about. Other countries like the us, australia, japan, india and others, feel there is too much pressure in the plans at the moment, and are objecting to those. So there is a kind of stalemate here. There is also a big question mark over carbon markets. Lots of countries, including brazil, want to bring forward carbon credits from the past and use them in the future. Lots of people here object to that, feeling it would devalue the idea of a market. There is also the issue of loss and damage, this idea of compensating small island states for the damages endured by climate change, which they can link to climate change, and they re looking for composition for that. Theyre trying to agree some sort of compromise on that. All the parites feel here that theyre very far apart on a range of issues, and many of them blame the chilean presidency. Chile is the country tasked with trying to bring everybody together, the meeting is not being held in chile, its being held here in madrid because of civil unrest in that country. Many people feel here that the chileans hasnt done a fantasticjob. Theres still hope that they can get some plans together and work on a compromise. But the worry is that if they dont, these talks will end in failure, the conference might be suspended and have to be resumed at some point in the new year. The headlines on bbc news the Prime Minister tells supporters in tony blairs old constituency in north east england that they have changed the Political Landscape and the country. Shadow chancellorjohn mcdonnell has confirmed he will not be part of labours next shadow cabinet following the partys crushing election defeat. Fasterjournies, new routes and more trains its all change on the railways from tomorrow. Tens of thousands of people have gathered in rome for what the organisers hope will be the biggest street protest against italys far right league party, led by the former deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini. The movement, called the sardines, started last month and has grown rapidly. Our rome correspondent, mark lowen, is at the protests in the italian capital. A month ago, this movement did not exist. But it has sprung up from a flash mark to this, tens of thousands in a room, rising up against the league, led by Matteo Salvini. They call themselves the sardines because they pack themselves tightly into squares across the country in the last week. The call for respect to human rights, welcoming migrants, a return to the core values of democracy. And they warned that the ghost of italy is past are returning. We want to demonstrate that we are here, the other half of italy is here. We are not agreeing with what has been done in the last year. I do not like Matteo Salvini, i think either of his aunt is a part of italians that did not wake up from fascism. We are here to prove that some italians are. I think my work here is to stand up for everyones rights, i think everyone here has the same purpose. Looking out across the sea off sardines, you see pictures of fish, but what you do not see our political banners and flags, because this Movement Must rise above the traditional parties, above italys polarised political system. They wa nt to polarised political system. They want to stop Matteo Salvini on winning an important Regional Election in northern italy next month, which if he were to try up m, month, which if he were to try up in, could spark National Elections which pull say he could win. They believe the tide is turning against populism in this country, out of the sardines are riding it. And the sardines are riding it. And the sardines are riding it. A little earlier we heard from analissa piras, an italian film maker and political observer , for her thoughts on the rapid rise of the so called sardines movement. Its fascinating because its so young, just one month, it has managed to mobilise so many people everywhere in italy. The fact that, in only one month, it has managed to get to rome, to piazza san giovanni, which is the Historic Place where big protest gathers, its quite extraordinary. What is also lovely is the jolliness and creativity of it, people are building and sewing their own sardines, it is very creative and very festive. It is completely apolitical, but it is sending a very strong and serious message, i believe. It is a response to the kind of triumph in social media and new technology that the new populist fascist force, represented by Matteo Salvini, has managed to do. This is the italian Civic Society that is saying no to those kind ofanti immigration, racist, extremist views of Matteo Salvini. More now on the general election the small mining town of leigh, in greater manchester, had been a labour seat for decades , but on thursday night it turned from red to blue. In a night that saw political allegiences switch across the country, the town elected their first ever conservative mp. James grundy said hed expected to lose with dignity. But are his constituents as shocked as he was . If you want to see how the blue wave crashed through the red wall, come here to leigh market and chat to people like john. Im the son of a miner. My dad was called a tunnel rat. Thats what he did. He put up steels in ttunnel. People would say he would turn in his grave voting tory, but im so glad i voted forjames grundy and not joanne platt. Lets give them a chance. Lets give grundy a chance. The norths political map, perhaps political soul, changed yesterday, with 24 constituencies voting tory for the first time in decades. When the result was announced, it was electric and then some. It was completely unexpected. Let me see your tongue youve gone all blue james says he ditched labour because they cant be trusted on the economy. And youre excited . A little, yes. It sounds weird, but yes. A year ago, no one would have thought this was possible. These constituents have had a labour mp since 1922. My names anne. Almost as long as annes family veg stall has been here and, until yesterday, the town had never had a tory mp. There is no law. What does that expression mean . What does that expression mean, anne . She is reluctantly supportive, not of the new government, but of the chance to cut through the parliamentary deadlock. I didnt actually vote to leave, but the choice was made, thats it, end of story, choice is made, get on with it and make the best of what weve got. Simple as. Im just fed up of it. And all of this is so significant, so extraordinary, it has brought an italian news crew to leigh market, to film an local delicacy and in a minute interview the new mp. Its quite a surprise, isnt it . Youre mp for leigh on italian tv yes, i think that sentence would perhaps come up in a sweepstake of the least likely things to be said to me because no one here is more surprised by james grundys success thanjames grundy. Have you learned anything . This is an interesting question. I learned that tiny communities far away from the big cities can think in a different way. Waiting in karens hairdressers, david says he started to think differently when his party stopped listening. I think labour have been very complacent in areas like this. For me, they were given a clear message at the beginning, that we wanted out. And, because theyve been messing around, weve again now given another clear message. We dont like corbyn and its that one person whos ruined it. We need to kick corbyn out, and then well be all right. But make no mistake, labour is farfrom dead here. How are you feeling about whats ahead, sofina . Sofina moved to leigh three years ago from dudley, where she was a labour councillor. But she agrees with Boris Johnson in two regards. Many labour votes here have simply been gifted to him on loan. And now is the time for healing. We can all live together regardless of our political aspirations. I really pray and hope that borisjohnson does live up to his promises because i know Jeremy Corbyn definitely would. Police have officially named the first victim of the white island volcano eruption in new zealand, as Recovery Efforts continue. Krystal eve browitt was a 21 year old australian, who was visiting the island with her family. Her father and sister are both in hospital with serious injuries. 15 deaths have been now been confirmed from mondays eruption, while about 20 people are in intensive care with severe burns. Phil mercer has more. Police divers and their colleagues from the navy have been in the contaminated waters off white island and those seas have been contaminated by that volcanic eruption on monday. So, ash, chemicals, in the water and when the divers have to come out of the water, they must be decontaminated. Visibility is not good in the water. What theyre looking for is a body. A body was seen in the sea, 24 hours after the eruption. So, the authorities believe that there are two more victims that they need to retrieve. One of them is believed to be in the water. The other is still thought to be on the island. There will be no attempt to go back in to land on the island today, so the authorities are concentrating their efforts on the seas, looking for one of those last known victims. Weather forecasters are warning australia could experience its hottest day on record next week. Temperatures are expected to peak in many areas from wednesday the Current Record ofjust over 50 celsius was set in 1960. New fire warnings have been issued for western parts of the country as well as queensland. At this time of year, many of us think about the plight of Homeless People sleeping rough on the street, but the dogs trust says a Record Number of animals will be receiving their hampers this year to help them through the cold winter months. The trust also wants more hostels and landlords to accept Homeless People and their dogs. Our reporter, john maguire, has more. She may look every inch the princess, but this time last year, layla the chihuahua didnt even have a roof over her head. She walks, shejust following me, following me. Wherever i go, she is coming. Her owner, mustafa, was homeless. After 27 years living in the uk, including running his own business, he found himself living and sleeping on the streets of north london. To be honest, i dont wish no one to live on the street, especially in the cold weather like december, january, you know . I found myself outside the church in leytonstone, in the cemetery, you know, with the dead people. Me and layla, you know, just sleeping there, rough. Its very tough. I never, ever imagined one day this is going to be happening to me. Throughout his four months sleeping rough, mustafa and layla were inseparable. When im next to her, theres no problem. Wherever, if i take her to sleep in the street, if i take her in different houses, im with her, shes fine. But now, they do have a roof, they have a bedsit flat, warm, dry and safe. Mustafas staying in ymca accommodation, while waiting for a permanent home. Theyre lucky, as only 10 of shelters or accommodation for Homeless People allow pets. Its ok that we accept the dog, but when were then trying to move people on a lot of the accommodation theyre moving to is private rented sector. Landlords dont want to accept dogs, so theres another barrier at that end. So, any work we can do with the dogs trust to try and break down some of those barriers would be good as well. Christmas has come early for layla, as today, the charity dogs trust is giving mustafa a hamper one of the 1,750 theyll hand out this year, almost 300 more than last christmas, which, for many, can be a difficult time. Sometimes, if you do have people that might have been rough sleeping, if they havent had much contact with friends or family, their dog can quite often always have been there for them and been their friend and their support. Dogs can also be beneficial to Mental Health and can provide a point of contact for people who are often isolated from support services and are difficult to reach. This is all part of the trusts hope project, which also offers Veterinary Care all year round, a reminder then of the charitys seasonal message that a dog is for life and not just for christmas. John maguire, bbc news, london. Now its time for a look at the weather with matt taylor. Matt, it is horribly windy out there. It is indeed, not really the best not to be out on the town. Strong and gusty winds out there, lively downpours also. Later on, temperatures will drop, i said on some parts of the country. It is also cold enough for some snow on the hills. At the moment, across parts of wales, central and southern england, some very lively downpours. Later on, showers and across parts of well, northern england, southern scotla nd of well, northern england, southern scotland and Northern Ireland will be given a covering of snow over the higher ground. Be given a covering of snow over the higherground. In be given a covering of snow over the higher ground. In between that, there will be some clear skies to ta ke there will be some clear skies to take us into the morning, strong winds abound. 50 to 60 mass per hour gust possible across some coastal hills. Temperatures will drop down below freezing, particularly from north wales was, the chance of icy conditions following showers, temperatures down to below freezing to start the day. Shall there is never too far, one area of low pressure to the south of ireland, almost a quieter and dry sunny spells for many to take us through sunday, some of us stay dry all day long. Michelle was get going across Western Areas until the afternoon, some heavy with wintry. Gales later to the far south west, that will all add up to another fairly chilly day, temperatures around two to four celsius across much of scotland, maybe 9 or 10 in the southern counties of england. A little bit of frost here and there on monday, showers not as abundant across england and wales, more in the way of Northern Ireland, longer spells of Northern Ireland, longer spells of rain and who is now in central and northern scotland through the day. Through the day, the winds will gradually increase, areas of rain, a big question mark to take us into monday of the chase day. This is one area which may play out, pressure pushes out, hit the colder air, could see some snow over the hills. Ill bring suffering for many. That could be a little further east, something tojust bear could be a little further east, something to just bear in could be a little further east, something tojust bear in mind. Whatever happens, it will move out of the way. For the rest of the week, temperatures will rise, winds pick up, more of us will see some rain too
