We will all go now and a new leader will come in place, appoint a shadow cabinet. I will not be part of that shadow cabinet. I have done my bit. We need to move on at that stage with that new leader. Im Rachel Schofield with the rest of todays headlines. Journey times are being cut, more services and new routes added as part of major timetable changes on britains railways. The search for two remaining bodies resumes, following the volcanic eruption in new zealand. Crucial United Nations climate talks in madrid are continuing, with no sign that an agreement is imminent. And at 12 30pm, therell be an electioncast special, when adam fleming and the team look back at yesterdays result. Thats coming up here on the bbc news channel. Good afternoon and welcome to westminster. Borisjohnson is visiting the north of england today, hours after celebrating his partys biggest election win for 30 years by sweeping aside labour in its traditional heartlands. Were expecting to hear from the Prime Minister within the next half hour, and well bring you that live. Yesterday, he said he hopes the conservatives victory will bring closure to the Brexit Debate and let the healing begin. He won a commons majority of 80, his partys largest since 1987. In contrast, labour suffered its worst election result since the 1930s. Jeremy corbyn said he did everything he could to get labour into power but expects to stand down early next year when a successor has been chosen by the party. There are flashing images in this report by our political correspondent, nick eardley. Back in downing street but with a Political Landscape that has changed completely. Borisjohnson will now lead a majority government, giving him the numbers to make brexit happen, and space to reshape domestic policy too. A message to voters. I say thank you for the trust you have placed in us and in me, and we will work round the clock to repay your trust and to deliver on your priorities with a parliament that works for you. And then i want to speak also to those who did not vote for us or for me and who wanted and perhaps still want to remain in the eu, and i want you to know that we, in this one nation conservative government, will never ignore your good and positive feelings of warmth and sympathy towards the other nations of europe. He won seats the tories have never ta ken before, some of them former labour heartlands and now he wants the country to move on. Reporter are you going to resign, mr corbyn . Labour, meanwhile, licks its wounds after a disastrous night, its worst election tally for 80 years. Some Wantjeremy Corbyn to go soon. He says he will quit, but not until the new year. The responsible thing to do is not to walk away from the whole thing, and i wont do that. I will stay here until there has been somebody elected to succeed me and then i will step down at that point. The lib dems have reflecting to do, too. They lost seats, including leader jo swinson, replaced by the snps candidate in eastern dunbartonshire. The snp made big gains and Scottish Independence will climb back up the agenda. Last night, borisjohnson told nicola sturgeon, in a phone call, that the last independence vote should be respected, but the Scottish First minister says she has a mandate from voters. Now, i acknowledge that not absolutely everybody who voted snp yesterday is ready to support independence. Whether or not scotland becomes an independent country must be a matter for the people who live here. So not everything will be plain sailing for Prime Ministerjohnson, but, with a big majority, he has a lot more power and a much bigger opportunity to govern as he wants. Nick eardley, bbc news, westminster. Earlier, i spoke to new conservative mp for wrexham, sarah atherton. She is the first ever tory mp for the area, and i asked her whether she was suprised by the scale of the conservative victory in her constituency and across the country. From day one, we were getting a really positive response in wards where we would not ordinarily have got that support, and what they were clearly saying is that they want brexit delivered, with 59 of wrexham voting to leave. I think they became more angry as time went on and that wasnt delivered and, secondly, they wanted the democratic will of the people upheld. When you say they wanted brexit done, what are they expecting will improve in their daily lives as a result . What they want is that we can move on, because all the focus, including here in wales, is on brexit. Talk is brexit, brexit, 21w, here in wales, is on brexit. Talk is brexit, brexit, mn, and feel that other issues have been neglected, and. But brexit is an argument that was foisted on the country by the conservative party so, apart from the arguments and division, which we know about, in practical terms, what will brexit deliver for your constituents that improves their daily lives . 1. 9 billion has been offered from the daily government to the welsh Labour Government to the welsh Labour Government to the welsh Labour Government to improve our Health Service so, until brexit is delivered, these sort of pledges of money cant come into wales, we cant further the north wales growth deal or employment opportunities, we cant further Business Opportunities and to further growth. We cant do that until this is completed. Why cant let money be pledged regardless of brexit happening . Because focus is on getting brexit done. But that was a conservative party row, effectively, that was put to the country at the country voted. What i dont understand is what your constituencies have said they think their lives will improve from as a result from brexit happening. Because, as i said, furtherfocus, support, concentration, money will then be released through a democratic parliamentary process, and that money can then be spent on the services they want to see improved. A new conservative mp in wrexham. Labour lost many seats in its traditional heartlands yesterday and the shadow chancellor John Mcdonnell was asked earlier about the position of theJeremy Corbyn and why the labour leader isnt stepping down immediately. There is always an interim before a new leader is elected so what better than to put the current team in, because there will be a queens speech and a budget as well, use that expertise for the interim period, but also allow the rest of the party to engage in that thorough debate about the future and the new leader, and it will be a constructive debate. We will learn lessons and listen to people about what went right and wrong, and then be ready. My fear is that we have got a long haul now, possibly five yea rs. Got a long haul now, possibly five years. The choices that we face are still there, huge, grotesque levels of inequality and, secondly, the issue that never really emerged in the election campaign, which was kind of changing this existential threat. That must be our priority of brexit, we will see what the government brings back in terms of negotiations, but the people decided we need to implement that, but we had to get the best deal to protect jobs and the economy to stop the overwhelming issue was brexit, thats the first thing, and the labour party were caught on the horns of a dilemma. I am example of this, we had a party which was largely supportive of remain, but many of us represented leave constituencies, so we could gone one way, to leave, that we would have alienated a lot of our remain support, if we went for remain, wed alienate a lot of our leave support. We tried to bring the country together and it failed. We have to accept that, take it on chin and move on. No leadership coming in, i think it will enable us to move forward on the key issues, getting a brexit deal that works for all of us, tackling these grotesque levels of inequality, and the big one is Climate Change, and my fear is five yea rs of Climate Change, and my fear is five years of a fossil fuel backed government, under Boris Johnson, means we will miss this five year opportunity of saving our planet. The small mining town of leigh in Greater Manchester had been a labour seat for decades, but on thursday night it turned from red to blue. In a night that saw political allegiances switch across the country, the town elected their first ever conservative mp. James grundy said hed expected to lose with dignity, but are his constituents as shocked as he was . Jayne mccubbin has been to find out. If you want to see how the blue wave crashed through the red wall, come here to leigh market and chat to people like john. Im the son of a miner. My dad was called a tunnel rat. Thats what he did. He put up steels in ttunnel. People would say he would turn in his grave voting tory, but im so glad i voted forjames grundy and not joanne platt. Lets give them a chance. Lets give grundy a chance. The norths political map, perhaps political soul, changed yesterday, with 2a constituencies voting tory for the first time in decades. When the result was announced, it was electric and then some. It was completely unexpected. Let me see your tongue youve gone all blue james says he ditched labour because they cant be trusted on the economy. And youre excited . A little, yes. It sounds weird, but yes. A year ago, no one would have thought this was possible. These constituents have had a labour mp since 1922. My names anne. Almost as long as annes family veg stall has been here and, until yesterday, the town had never had a tory mp. There is no law. What does that expression mean . What does that expression mean, anne . She is reluctantly supportive, not of the new government, but of the chance to cut through the parliamentary deadlock. I didnt actually vote to leave, but the choice was made, thats it, end of story, choice is made, get on with it and make the best of what weve got. Simple as. Im just fed up of it. And all of this is so significant, so extraordinary, it has brought an italian news crew to leigh market, to film an local delicacy and in a minute interview the new mp. Its quite a surprise, isnt it . Youre mp for leigh on italian tv yes, i think that sentence would perhaps come up in a sweepstake of the least likely things to be said to me because no one here is more surprised by james grundys success thanjames grundy. Have you learned anything . This is an interesting question. I learned that tiny communities far away from the big cities can think in a different way. Waiting in karens hairdressers, david says he started to think differently when his party stopped listening. I think labour have been very complacent in areas like this. For me, they were given a clear message at the beginning, that we wanted out. And, because theyve been messing around, weve again now given another clear message. We dont like corbyn and its that one person whos ruined it. We need to kick corbyn out, and then well be all right. But make no mistake, labour is farfrom dead here. How are you feeling about whats ahead, sofina . Sofina moved to leigh three years ago from dudley, where she was a labour councillor. But she agrees with Boris Johnson in two regards. Many labour votes here have simply been gifted to him on loan. And now is the time for healing. We can all live together regardless of our political aspirations. I really pray and hope that borisjohnson does live up to his promises because i know Jeremy Corbyn definitely would. Well, i also spoke to fleur anderson, the new labour mp for putney and labours only seat gain from the conservatives at this general election. I asked her whether the labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, was a problem for her on the doorstep. People said to me, i will give you my vote, and many people also voted for more of the partys manifestos, whichJeremy Corbyn has brought us under his leadership, so there is a mixture of people. However, who we have as our next has to be determined by many different factors. But do you think it should be someone from the corbyn wing of the party or someone from a more Central Place in the labour party . I dont know. I think dividing ourself into corbyn and non corbyn, that kind of thing, i think that is divisive, and what we need is someone who can bring us together. So i dont vote along sectional lines, and i never have, and i wont be doing that. I will be looking at the different people and what they have to bring to our party, and i wont be ruling anyone out at all. But isnt that denying the obvious fact that this corbyn style of leadership has been a disaster electorally . No, its not. Lots of people voted for lots of different reasons, and every individual mp and potential leader brings a different amount of qualities to how they will lead the party. Really, in putney, we have said that we want a labour mp and a Labour Government, and i will be listening to all the reasons why people said that, and they are many different reasons, but it was a massively positive and Optimistic Campaign that we ran here. What we are saying to each other now in this campaign is, lets keep that going, lets keep that spirit of coming out on the streets. Its been an old fashioned, on the stump conversation by conversation campaign, and thats what we need to keep going in the labour party, and someone keep going in the labour party, and someone who will keep leaving us in that spirit of optimism and hope, and how we can actually have a Better Future. We dont have to shrug our shoulders and say, oh, austerity has to happen, schools have to have cuts, the nhs has to have to have cuts, the nhs has to have privatisation, we dont have to do that. So a leader that will enable us to do that is what we will all be looking for. The new labour mpfor all be looking for. The new labour mp for putney. Im joined by the political strategist john mcternan, who was tony blairs political secretary. Who is going to replace, and who should replaceJeremy Corbyn, in your view . In my view, Jess Phillips, somebody who has not been associated with the current leadership around Jeremy Corbyn or the leadership around ed miliband. They have had their time and theyve lost, we have now lost three elections in a row, four, if you catch 2010. I think it needs to be a new voice, a new face with new ideas, because we will need a lot of ideas, because we will need a lot of ideas in a post Brexit Britain. Everybody is obsessed with brexit. Housing challenge, social care for older people, pensions, there are all kinds of issues around us, Climate Change. We need new progressive ideas and a new person to be the figurehead. Would Jess Phillips get through the party is constituted . Dont the left have all the leaders, her plus the membership . Thats a good question, and the member should have control of the next leader, thats what the changes in the constitution of the party mean, and i think the membership have to ask themselves, do they see the world in left and right . So we have to choose a left leader even though we have gone four left in the last three elections even though weve lost every time . Or even though weve lost every time . 0rdo we even though weve lost every time . Or do we need a Labour Government, so or do we need a Labour Government, so the test is not of the leader, are you so the test is not of the leader, a re you left so the test is not of the leader, are you left or right, do i like you, but could you win a general election . From where we are, could you win the next election or could you win the next election or could you win the next election or could you win after the next election, the election after that . If you look at any of the names in the running, would any of those be able to match borisjohnson at would any of those be able to match Boris Johnson at the dispatch would any of those be able to match borisjohnson at the dispatch box or an election in five years . Thats a good question, and a good test for this. I thinkJess Phillips at the dispatch box with borisjohnson, that would be box office, because i think she has the quick wit, she has got the humour, and one way in which you can get underneath Boris Johnsons facade and politics is to be more quick witted than him. Johnsons facade and politics is to be more quickwitted than him. Boris johnson is in the north east today, and we are waiting for him to speak. Very savvy of them to capitalise on that massive victory up there. You know Dominic Cummings, who is credited with this. What do you make of what we will see with people like that at the helm . I think the thing the labour party should think hard about is that we are obsessed with oui about is that we are obsessed with our leadership, our election defeat, with look to the past. The tories have us all focusing on brexit. Michael gove and Dominic Cummings are thinking about what post Brexit Britain looks like. Post Brexit Britain looks like. Post Brexit Britain will be a different economy, a different place. There is a tory government who are going to get demands from traditional labour seats. They will have to have a policy on bus services. In fact, the government said there would be a national bus strategy. Suddenly you will see labour like ideas coming out of the mouths of tories. That is the way you can see michael gove and Dominic Cummings together will try and consolidate their hold on labour seats. Labour dont have to just find a leader to win the last election, they need a leader to win at the next election after the country has been changed, and youve got to give the tories the credit of understanding they might well do things that are popular, they might do things that are good for the country. Weve got to try and win the election not by saying the tories are bad, because they might not just be as tories are bad, because they might notjust be as unremittingly bad as labour people want to feel they are. So you have some respect for what Dominic Cummings and michael gove are capable of doing . What michael gove was doing on the environment and site was progressive. What Dominic Cummings did as a strategist was the kind of thing strategists admire. He had a weak hand, almost as weak as theresa may, and almost the same number of votes as theresa may got, and he played it very strongly. That is what strategists do. Dominic cummings has won the referendum, he won this general election. You always have to give credit to people when they have achieved something. In terms of the new labour heartland, and we know the names, peter mandelson, alan milburn, these people were in the north east. Does the failure go back partly to that generation, or is that unfair . The loss of this area . I think it is unfair to say that those of us who left government in 2007 are responsible for a defeat 12 yea rs 2007 are responsible for a defeat 12 years later. But the decline has been long standing there. Know, those seats have rejected a Labour Government that stood on a tax and spend, statist, tony benn eyes, 19705 spend, statist, tony benn eyes, 1970s style programme. They rejected that programme back in 1979. They rejected it again in 1983. I think working people in the north east are going, how many times do we have to tell you this . They voted in droves, not just there tell you this . They voted in droves, notjust there but in labour created new heartlands, under tony blair and Peter Michael singh s leadership, heartlands in the south, we have kept some of those and we can go back to those photos, but it is wrong to say that the blair government, which finished in 2007, is in any way responsible for voters rejecting the corbyn is a leader, corbyn and his ideas. He has had his chance. He ran the whole thing. But borisjohnson is chance. He ran the whole thing. But Boris Johnson is in chance. He ran the whole thing. But borisjohnson is in new labour territory, want people say, that is humiliation, we dont want anybody from new labour running the party going forward. If we see boris celebrating that he has gained a significant symbolic territory, what we have to say is we redouble our effo rts we have to say is we redouble our efforts to say, those are our people. If our people chose to vote tory, lets respect them, understand them and win them back, and start by saying, we are sorry we lost you. You didnt leave us, we left you. But are you saying, if michael gove and Dominic Cummings, led by Boris Johnson, do positive Infrastructure Investment stuff in the north. Hs2, crossrailfor the north. Would you back them, or ugly we desecrate or are would you back them, or ugly we desecrate 01 are we would you back them, or ugly we desecrate or are we in uncharted territory . I have never been a person in politics who says, just because the toys to it it must be wrong, so, if the leaders of the north, the local Council Leaders and elected mayors, if they demand crossrail of the north and it is delivered by a tory government, im not going to say i liked it when it was a labour idea and i hate it now the tories have done it, i will say it good for the country. It would make mea it good for the country. It would make me a tory, desperate it will not make me a tory, it would make the task harder. What happens if the labour party choosing somebody from the left again and corbynism continues . Is labour politically finished and do we need a new party . Should those labour moderates leave . There will be plenty of labour moderate mps, and the question is not left or right, corbynism or non corbynism. The question is, if labour decides to pick a leader who cannot win the next election, and the labour party and its membership choosing to become irrelevant. Should people in the centre ground, centre left, should theyjoin the lib dems, should they form a new movement . What should happen . This election has been a catastrophic judgment on all kinds of things, a judgment on all kinds of things, a judgment on all kinds of things, a judgment on the lib dems and their strategy. If labour becomes a sinking ship with a new copyright leader, the lib dems are another sinking ship. Click a lot of work and money has gone into trying to come up with a new party. Labour mps refused to leave the party because they wanted to use the Party Machinery to try and stop brexit. It is finished now. Nothing is finished. Len mccluskey will retire, so finished. Len mccluskey will retire, so the battle for the leadership of unite is important. Progressives ce ntre left unite is important. Progressives centre left progressives running the trade Union Movement would change the ballots power inside the labour movement. Is it a possible thing that the unions will be run by summary that the unions will be run by summary from the centre left . That the unions will be run by summary from the centreleft . Yes, mccluskey only got re elected a tiny margin. That organisation is one way. Look at the ways the corbyn knights targeted all mps for reselection and most of the mps got reselected. I dont think any deselection is were successful. The thing about politics is the obsession with Party Politics is one thatis obsession with Party Politics is one that is understandable for somebody like me, but there is a battle of ideas out there, so 18 months ago wed never heard of greta thunberg. Now, climate extinction, climate rebellion, Climate Change is so much on the agenda. Corporates are taking a concern about it. That is a political change driven by people outside politics. We will have to respond, and so will the tories. And borisjohnson is respond, and so will the tories. And Boris Johnson is speaking respond, and so will the tories. And borisjohnson is speaking out in sedgefield, addressing tory supporters. I thank you all for your incredible hard work. Nobody wanted this election in the run up to christmas, but what an incredible thing you have done. You have changed the Political Landscape. You have changed the conservative party for the better, and you have changed the future of our country. Cheering i want to thank all of the people of sedgefield, of bishop auckland. Cheering of stockton self, darlington,. North west durham. Blyth valley and redcar. Cheering i want to thank all the people of those incredible constituencies, and i want to thank all of you for the trust you have placed in us in the conservative party and in me, and i know how difficult it was and it can be to make that kind of decision, andi be to make that kind of decision, and i can imagine pencils hovering over the ballot paper and wavering before coming down for us and the conservatives, and i know that people may have been breaking the voting habits of generations to vote for us. And i want the people of the north east to know that we in the conservative party and i will repay your trust. Cheering everything that we do, everything as idoas everything that we do, everything as i do as your Prime Minister will be devoted to repaying that trust, and first of all what i will be going to do. Get brexit done get brexit done, and we have a deal ready to go for can anybody tell me what kind of deal that is . What are the characteristics of it . It is often ready. Every single one of our mps, do you support that deal . They do, they will back it. We have 100 support. We would get it in before christmas so we would just be going over the timetable. Can dudley do it before christmas and then we are out onjanuary before christmas and then we are out on january 31. There before christmas and then we are out onjanuary 31. There is much more that we want to do to repay the trust of the british people and the trust of the british people and the trust of the british people and the trust of people in the north east. We wa nt trust of people in the north east. We want to improve our fantastic national Health Service, and that is why we are making the biggest investment for a generation. How many new hospitals . 14. Custom we will get on. We will make the streets safer across the whole of the uk by investing in how many more police initially . Inaudible. Correct. We will improve education, with money already going into every school in the country, 5000 per pupil in secondary. What we want to do as conservatives is we want to ta ke do as conservatives is we want to take our country forward, by uniting and levelling up across the whole of oui and levelling up across the whole of our incredible united kingdom, and we will do it with a simple idea, by investing in better infrastructure, better education and fantastic modern technology, and giving those things every part of the uk, and we wa nt to things every part of the uk, and we want to increase opportunity across the uk, because that is what we believe in. We believe in opportunity everywhere, we believe that talent is evenly distributed about our country but opportunity is u nfa i rly about our country but opportunity is unfairly scripted, and we will rectify that as a one nation conservative government, a peoples government. I want to Say Something to my colleagues, my newly elected mp colleagues, and i want to say in all sincerity to you in the north east, thank you very much, and thank you for what you have done in your campaigns. Thank you for what you have done in yourcampaigns. I thank you for what you have done in your campaigns. I think they have all been excellent and i congratulate you on your achievement. You are all going to come down now with me on monday westminster, we will all there on monday. We will do some fantastic things. Our country has embarked on a wonderful adventure, and we are going to recover our National Self confidence, our mojo, ourself policed, and we will do things differently and better as a country, because we can. Oui differently and better as a country, because we can. Our self belief. Cheering free trade, Better Regulation Cutting National Insurance contributions, doing all sorts of things differently and better, and it will be a wonderful time for our country. Our country will stand tall in the world. I want to say to all of my colleagues as mps, and get down to westminster, we begin our work. Remember, we are not the masters. We are the servants now. We are the servants now. And ourjob is to serve the people of this country and to deliver on our priorities, and to deliver on our priorities, and our priorities and their priorities are the same. It is getting brexit done but also delivering on our national Health Service, our education, safer streets, better hospitals, a Better Future for our country. That is what we will deliver and focus on. Thank you all very much for your time, thank you for coming this morning, thank you for coming this morning, thank you for your wonderful achievement in transforming our party, transforming the political map of this country, and i think putting us on a brighter, better path
