Of thursdays general election. In other news police in india arrest the owner of a delhi factory where a fire killed more than a0 people overnight. A Murder Investigation is launched after the death of a woman in northamptonshire. A 13 year old boy is among the suspects. And coming up at 4. 30 to mark the 20th anniversary of talking movies, tom brook meets the prolific bollywood actor, Shah Rukh Khan. Good afternoon. In the final days of the election campaign, Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn are telling voters that thursdays poll is an historic chance to move the country forward. The conservatives say a points based immigration system would reduce low skilled migration. Labour is using the day to set out its plans for social care. Our Political Correspondent, Susana Mendonca, reports. Not long left until voters make their call, and borisjohnson is hoping theyll give him a ringing endorsement. Hello, mr walker, hi. This is borisjohnson. At a call centre in london today he focused on conservative plans for a points based immigration system, and on the issue thats been his key message throughout this campaign. We are a party that is going to get brexit done. By when . Byjanuary 31st, and weve got a deal that is ready to go an absolutely fantastic deal, isnt it . How many members of the conservative Party Standing in this election support our deal . Every single one. The labour leaderJeremy Corbyn has been popping into parts of wales this weekend that his party needs to hold onto. Labours message is one of properly funding Public Services like social care for elderly people. The shadow chancellor said it was about creating a more equal society. I want to transform our economy. I want to make sure our economy works for everybody. Does that mean overthrowing capitalism . No, it means transforming capitalism into a new form, and i think theres a whole debate going on, notjust here but across europe and america itself, about how our economy is failing the vast majority of our people. Could this be the kingmaker . If neither of the main parties wins outright, the leader of the Scottish National party has made it clear shed only consider offering her backing to one side. I will never do anything to put borisjohnson into downing street. So he doesnt need to worry . But labour, in order to get a budget and a queens speech through, if theyre in a minority position, need the support of another party. And if scotland votes for the snp, in a Hung Parliament giving scotland enormous leverage, then and i will exercise that firstly in line with scotlands interests. Also hoping to pull in the voters in this final stretch, the lib dem leader, who says neither borisjohnson orJeremy Corbyn are fit to be pm, but could she work with someone else . There are clearly lots of people within the labour party who i do work well with and have worked well within the last two and a half, three and a half years. We have been working on a cross party basis to try to secure a peoples vote, and that kind of cooperation will absolutely continue. With the big day fast approaching, the stage is being set. All the players can do now is keep drilling down on their core messages. And Susana Mendonca joined me a little earlier and told me what we should expect from the final few days of campaigning. They are drilling down on those key ideas and communicating that message to people who may be undecided. You may have people out there who arent sure which way to go and trying to get them to vote for their parties. Also, what might be interesting in this election is tactical voting. I think more so than any other election that ive covered, the issue of tactical voting is one that has been much more spoken about. It seems to be a bit more organised. You have tactical voting websites. Ive been in marginal seats in parts of west london. People have spoken to me on the street about looking at what they will do tactically. Will it affect the vote in any significant way . That remains to be seen but it could be interesting in key marginal seats that could go either way. There are many seats where we have Party Leaders going to places where they have to hold on and many seats where there are a few hundred or few thousand votes in it. They can woo some of those undecideds and get tactical voters on board where they can make a difference. I mentioned polls, tell us what they are saying. The conservatives have been ahead throughout all of this, with a ten point lead over labour but what we have seen most recently as a narrowing of those leads. Tory leaders, it has become quite static and labour seem to be gaining. Who are they gaining from . Suggestions from the liberal democrat voters, perhaps switching to labour. What impact can that have on the vote . Labour will be wanting to push forward with that to make a difference in terms of the final result but we have been burned by polls before. They have got it wrong before and when it comes down to people who do not tell the pollsters what they are actually going to do on voting day, until thursday night and the early hours of friday, we just will not know. As part of that final push that susana was talking about, the liberal democrat leader, jo swinson, addressed supporters in sheffield, where she said the countrys future hinges on the next few days and talked about why what the party was doing was in her words so important. We are doing this for our future, our countrys future. We are better than the tired, broken vision that comes from borisjohnson orJeremy Corbyn. Pull up the drawbridge, be insular, be closed as a society. But we know britain is better than that. We can be an open, fair, liberal and inclusive society. That is the future we are fighting for. Where we work with our closest friends and neighbours, as a United Kingdom family of nations, working with the European Union to tackle the Climate Emergency so that we do not pass on to our children a poisoned planet, but we give them a strong and bright future. We can tackle the Mental Health crisis, we can support people who are struggling. We can invest in our schools because the future can be brighter. Police in india have arrested the owner of a building in delhi which caught fire overnight killing at least 43 people in a commercial district of the capital, delhi. Emergency services said their work had been hampered by the narrow streets but they had been able to rescue more than 50 people. The fire broke out on the ground floor of this multistorey factory, in the early hours of the morning, and then quickly spread to other levels. Rescue services say dozens of workers were sleeping inside the building at the time. Translation there were about 30 people from my village at the site. I have been able to see some of them but i havent been able to spot them all. My nephew called his father this morning and said, please save me. Theres a fire in the building and im unable to escape. Only later we found out about his death. This is a really congested and densely populated area of delhi. The alleyways behind me are too narrow to be accessed by fire engines. As a result, firefighters had to fight the blaze from a distance of about 100 metres. The countrys Prime Minister, narendra modi, described the fire as extremely horrific, and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. Those who survived the blaze are now being treated in the citys hospitals. Translation the rescue operation was a challenge because it was congested, and secondly because there was lots of smoke and lots of plastic burnt inside. It was difficult to carry out the rescue. Four people from my village were working in this building and we dont know where they are. Another has died in hospital. Fire accidents are common in india, where many buildings here lack proper fire exits and illegal construction is rampant. The cause of the fire is uncertain and an inquiry has now been launched into the incident. Pratiksha ghildial, bbc news, delhi. A Murder Investigation is under way after a 25 year old woman was killed following an attack in rushden in northamptonshire. Two men and a 13 year old boy have been arrested. Our correspondent, simonjones, told me the latest. This happened yesterday evening at about 8. 30 on wellingborough road. A woman was stabbed to death. We are told she died in the road. Police made three arrests. A 13 year old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder. A 27 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and another 27 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Police have not said if the victim and those arrested were known to one another but officers have described this as a tragic event and they say the community is in a state of shock. A lot of people may have seen the aftermath of the attack or seen the attack themselves. They want to hear from anyone who saw anything important and they are asking if anyone has dashcam footage from the scene at the time of the attack. They say the area remains cordoned off and is likely to remain that way. For some time to come, as the investigation continues. They are working round the clock to bring those responsible to justice and they will have increased patrols over the coming days and hours. They are trying to reassure a community that is very much in a state of shock. A man has been arrested after a video posted on social media showed a supporter making racist gestures at the Manchester City v Manchester United match at the Etihad Stadium yesterday. A short time ago our news correspondent, andy moore brought us up to date. The man was arrested a couple of hours ago and has not been named. We just heard from the construction company, kier group, that he has been suspended. They put out a brief statement saying that they have a zero tolerance policy towards any racist or discriminatory behaviour. We can confirm an employee has been suspended pending an investigation. This man was widely named on social media, and he was identified very quickly in the wake of the incident. There were claims that he should be sacked straightaway. We can see that while the incident is awful, this was in the Manchester City and Manchester United derby, objects were thrown onto the pitch. Some bottles and lighters. You can see the brazilian midfielder fred, walking away after being hit by something. There were monkey gestures that were allegedly aimed at fred and his colleaguejesse lingard. Then, the arrest happened this morning. A 41 year old man, he has not been named, he was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, he remains in custody for questioning. Greater Manchester Police said that they were called to the stadium at 1855 last night. Superintendent chris hill said. So, possibly they are still investigating the throwing of the objects. There may be further action to take. What did the club say . They said they had a zero tolerance to this kind of incident and anyone found guilty will face a lifetime ban. The headlines on bbc news. As we enter the last few days of campaigning in the general election, the leaders of the parties have been out, trying to persuade voters that they offer the best future for the country. Our correspondents have been travelling with them. Frankie mccamley is with the labour leader in wales, Olivia Richwald is with the lib dem leader in south yorkshire. We start first though with richard galpin, with the Prime Minister who was taking calls from voters at the conservative Party Campaign headquarters in central london. In his speech, there was a measure of caution. He was saying that we are in the final furlong, but we are not quite there yet. And we need, as he put it, to keep working hard. So i think there is some concern. They obviously want to keep going, really pushing the campaign as hard as possible right the way through until the last minute. They are not taking anything for granted. Today he talked about social care, the fact that, in his manifesto, he promises trying to ledge free care in england for over 65 is, for those most in need of it. He ran through his manifesto promises, talking about the nhs and criticising the conservative government, saying they are planning on putting it up for sale. Borisjohnson has denied that, saying that if it was to be a Labour Government, the nhs would be safe. Nothing would be up for sale. Her main message today has been regional rebalancing main message today has been regional re balancing fund of main message today has been regional rebalancing fund of £50 billion which should be spent in the north, outside london and the south east. That message goes down very well appear in the north. It was not a new announcement, it was in the manifesto. These plans include more Railway Electrification and charging points for electric cars and better broadband access. Jo swinson has had a very busy day. She had a live tv interview this morning, now she is in sheffield and im told after she finishes these interviews she is going canvassing for votes on the streets here in sheffield before whizzing up the mi tonight to leeds for a live debate on channel 4. The environment has been a key issue for the Political Parties throughout their election campaigns, but have their claims stacked up . Roger harrabin has been examining the main parties biggest promises. It has been by far the greenest election so far in britains political history, with most of the major parties committing to cut heavily the gases that are overheating the climate. Weve had the wildfires in australia that have caused a lot of concern, weve had toxic smoke in delhi and, here in the uk, weve had our own heatwave with record temperatures. So what are the parties promising . Well, the green party and plaid cymru both say that by 2030 we should have stopped all the omissions that are heating the climate. That is extremely ambitious. It would mean all petrol and diesel cars off the road, for instance. Labour, their target is a little bit vague, but perhaps somewhere in the 20305. The liberal democrats and snp both say it should be done by 2045, and the conservatives by 2050. That conservative target may look weak in comparison, but their own independent advisers say that will itself be tough to achieve. So what does friends of the earth think . Weve looked at all the manifestos and all the commitments made by the main parties and i think there is clear blue water now between the conservatives on the one hand, that are offering some good things like the scaling up of offshore wind and various other things, but unfortunately, committing to airport expansion and road building. The other parties, labour, the liberal democrats and greens, are offering much more in terms of tackling Climate Change. And they are not just talking about cutting emissions, theyre talking about policies that will soak up Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere in the shape of trees. Labours target is really eye watering. They want to plant 100 Million Trees a year. Experts say it can be done, but its a huge stretch. The greens say 70 million, the lib dems 16 million, the snp also 60 million, and the conservatives 30 million theyve been a bit outbid there on the tree front. The other issue is renewables. All the parties are planning very big investment in renewables and also in home insulation. Theres a big difference between them on this, with the greens in particular and labour saying the government should borrow big time to fund major investment, and other parties, the conservatives and the lib dems, being more cautious about that. But here is a warning from the United Nations at the conference this week in madrid. Delegates have been clearly told that the line of omissions of Carbon Dioxide and other Greenhouse Gases is still going up. We have decided, as a world community, that Greenhouse Gases should be going down, but the graph says otherwise. There is a very stark warning from the head of the United Nations. There is no time and no reason to delay. We have the tools, we have the science, we have the resources. Let us also show we have the political will that people demand from us. To do anything less will be a betrayal of our entire human family and all the generations to come. I must say, i have been personally reporting on the subject of Climate Change for 30 years. At last, it seems to me, it is getting the attention it deserves. Whether it gets the policies it needs is a different issue. And you can find out more on what all the parties are pledging on this issue, and other policy areas, by going to our online guide at bbc. Co. Uk news Avanti West Coast has taken over from Virgin Trains as the operator running the west coast main line. Avantis first train left london euston for manchester piccadilly this morning. Virgin trains was britains longest running rail franchise operating for more than 22 years. Our Business Correspondent Katie Prescott explains what the changes will mean for passengers. Stripped of its colours, one of the last Virgin Trains pulling out of euston station. After a row over pensions liabilities, britains longest running rail franchises being replaced by Avanti West Coast. Its a joint venture between scotland based firstgroup and the uk arm of italys main train operator. The main change that passengers at euston station will notice will be the change of branding, as virgins red and white livery is stripped away and the staff wear new uniforms. But the people in those uniforms will stay the same, as most of the crew, drivers, and even Senior Management are being kept on. All pre booked tickets will still be valid. Passengers will travel on 20 new british built trains, which willjoin refurbished ones on the avanti service. What were trying to do is we are going to offer greater value for money, were going to increase the number of trains that people are going to see, the number of seats will be far greater in a couple of years. And we want to encourage, its very important, the environmental footprint that we all put on the world, we think rail can make a great impact on that. Avanti is italian for forward. These passengers are hoping that the new franchise lives up to its name as the Christmas Holiday approaches. Katie prescott, bbc news. Around 60,000 people took part in a Charity Sleep out last night to highlight the issue of homelessness. Organisers of the worlds big sleep out, which began on a small scale in edinburgh three years ago, said 52 cities participated in this years event. Our reporter Chi Chi Izundu has more. The idea is simple sleep rough and raise money for the homeless. Thats what hundreds did last night in londons trafalgar square. An estimated 1,800 people had signed up, but in 50 cities around the world more than 60,000 people were expected to sleep rough. At this time of year, as the temperature dropped and the entertainment came to an end, there was a gentle coaxing into bed by dame helen mirren. Im your bedtime story. They dont have a home. Theres no roof. Sleeping out in this cold weather, and i have like a million thermals on, is actually quite upsetting. I dont have the change to give them something every day. Its doing Something Like this that almost makes you feel like you can help in some way or another. This is the fourth year Sir Chris Hoy has taken part. You get through it. Its not much fun. Its a pretty grim experience, but thats one night. Only one night, and you get to go home to a warm shower, a warm house, get some food. So its almost impossible to imagine how life must be on the streets. For 20 year old j cocoa, this event mean so much. She used to sleep on buses and in takeaway restaurants when she was homeless as a teenager. It wasnt a comfortable stage of my life. It wasnt a place that i wanted to be in. Nobody wants to be homeless, nobody wants to not know what their next move is in a bad way. And its a very vulnerable place to be in, you know, just having nowhere to stay. Even though it was just one night, those who took part are hoping their efforts can help end homelessness for some forever. Chi chi izundu, bbc news. Now on bbc news to mark the 20th anniversary of talking movies, tom brook meets the prolific bollywood actor, Shah Rukh Khan. Great to see you. I didnt know it was a big thing, i thought i was just meeting you personally. Oh, really . Hello from mumbai, im tom brook. For a special 20th Anniversary Edition of talking movies, i came to india to interview top bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Were here outside his home where fans congregate at all hours of the day. He is the king of bollywood, followed by millions. Hes my hero, ijust simply love him. How big a legend is Shah Rukh Khan . Oh, i cant explain this, its beyond imagination. Right now ive got goosebumps. So nice to see you. I greeted him as he arrived at a special mumbai event to mark the 20th anniversary of talking movies. This 54 year old megastar seemed delighted to be there. I have to confess i am biased when it comes to Shah Rukh Khan i am a fan myself, and i have interviewed him several times before. Visiting bollywood this time, he was the one i wanted to talk to about the changes taking place in the indian Film Industry, and ask him where he is headed next with his career. Shah rukh khans first bollywood film was the action romance drama deewana in 1992. But he became known for playing antiheroes, villainous characters the first role of that ilk was in baazigar in 1993. Yet it is for his work in a series of romantic films, for which he is best known. Born a muslim and married to a hindu, he has become a unifying figure in india, at a time when there are few. And he has won 14 film their awards, the hindi Film Industrys equivalent of the oscars. Our invited audience, made up of loyal Shah Rukh Khan fans, were eager to hear what he had to say. All right, now for the moment everyone has been waiting for. We have a great guest of honour here tonight, who i am going to interview, lets have a great round of applause for Shah Rukh Khan cheering and applause. You sit here. Thank you very much. On behalf of talking movies, a very big welcome, especially on the occasion of our 20th anniversary, it really means a lot to have you here and to be able to talk to you. Tell me, did you always want to be an actor . Ok, so i, first i want to say thank you tom for having me here this evening, and ifully respect the wonderfulness of talking movies that youve created at the bbc, but i came here only to see you. Honestly, i truly hold him singlehandedly responsible for making indian movies, and indian stars, men and women alike, extremely important in the western world. So thank you for having me over, and thank you for such a wonderful hello. When you ask about, did i always want to be an actor . I dont know, its like i want to know, did you always want to be an anchor, did you want to always interview movie stars and look after movies . Or did just happened, if i may ask you . I had very peculiar interests as a child, and the things i wanted to do were quite odd, i wanted to be a telecommunications expert, i wanted to be an Airline Pilot and a psychotherapist. But i think it is best i ended up doing journalism for everyones s sake. Same as me, i wanted to be an astronaut, an army officer, a scientist and an economist. And it all rolled into the amazingly intellectual actor that i have become. Applause. You definitely made the right choice. Let me ask you a bit about your early career. Was there one role that you felt really defined you as an actor early on, and gave you recognition . When you start off, one of the main roles, at least during my time, it was to play a madman, play a guy who is crazy and you always think as an actor, that is the thing i want to do. You all want to bejoker from batman, you want to be Jack Nicholson from the shining, yeah, you want to be mr prem chopra, from a lot of the films, or gabbar singh at least. So there were these moments that you had. I was told that when i entered the Film Industry, i was told by a director, i wont name him, but he called me and said very honestly, i love him for that, i worked with him later and respect him a lot he is a good friend even now, despite what he told me, he looked at me and said the greatest asset you have as an actor is that you are ugly, and i can put you in any role. Thats not true. He didnt know better at the time, but there is no accounting for taste. He looked at me and said, you are so different looking, i guess thats what he meant, it came out a little wrong, he said, i can put you in any role, and that is the greatest asset you have. I did not think of myself as someone who could be a typical hindi movie star, but i somehow got in tune with, you know, i should play some bad guys, maybe then i will be accepted. And because i was from theatre, the difference between the protagonists is really, you are playing one of the main parts. So to say, and i lived by this, there are no small roles, only small actors. And genuinely so because of theatre, i did not want to be the hero, i didnt want to romance a girl, i didnt want to be doing the typical things. In terms of inspiration, were there particular actors that really made an impact on you when you were an up and coming yourself . Lots of them. Growing up i loved Peter Sellers, i liked michaelj fox a lot, and my acting is hugely, i was acting with the british theatre teacher, so i was hugely impacted by Peter Sellers and british actors, now gary oldman and everyone. From india i think mr rishi kapoor, mr amitabh bachchan, obviously its like, you know, mr bachchan is like a birthmark for actors, you have to have it. Otherwise you can never really become an actor. I always learn what not to do, or what to do from those actors. I love actors, so these three or four people essentially, yes. You have been more than successful with your career, but in recent times, a couple of your films have not done so well. Why do you think that is, is it to do with changes in the Film Industry, or what are your thoughts about that, really . I have been doing this business for so long, and people get a little disturbed because you make all films with a lot of effort and happiness and goodness, but goodness and happiness does not a good film make, you have to tell a good story. So with due respect to all the other people involved in the films that have not done well, i think we just made bad films, it is as simple as that. Because in india, everyone knows how to play cricket, and how to make movies. Laughter and applause. Everybody. So they meet you, so they tell sachin how to do a forward defensive stroke, and they tell me how to do a story. But i really believe there is no one reason for a movie going wrong, except that i truly believe i told the story badly. It is the only reason these films are a flop. And i have always said this, it is not with humility, its with honesty i am the employee of the audience, and if i cannot make my boss happy i will be fired from the job. So a couple of times in the last two years, i have been fired from the job. They want to give me a chance again . I will come back and i will get my boss on my side. Definitely. As an actor, do you think as you get older, you are being offered or doing more interesting roles than when you were younger . Or are the roles getting less interesting . I would like to absolutely set the record straight for talking movies and bbc, iam not old. Dont do, what is called, fake reporting. I apologise. Just be guarded next time. And the second part is, no, i dont think so. I am very fortunate that when i started off, because of being unconventional, like, say, in yourtrade, wanting to do really different things, i think i did not get, or i dont get typecast for too long. Sometimes i make the choices according to what i personally feel like doing, like a comedy and i will do it sometimes, like now i am really wanting to do a kickass action film. A good action film. You have done those in the past. I have done a couple of them, but i have not made it to the alpha male category. So i really want to my six pack has failed, nothing that makes people feel like i am the macho guy, so that is one thing. Deep voice, speak very little, walk into a room, shoot before you say hi. Then you ride a motorbike, high speed, hairflying, dark glasses and chew gum. Thats what i want. Sounds very cool. Let me ask you, some of your films have real staying power. There is one film, i cant say it in hindi but it is referred to as ddlj. Dilwale dulhania le jayenge. You do it very nicely. It has been playing in a cinema here in mumbai for more than 20 years. Why has it had such staying power, do you think . We did not think even for a bit it would be such a big hit, let alone a commercial success. We thought it would be a sweet film. Because the film was released in the 90s, i think the liberalisation movement all around the world started, globalisation, india became liberal. I think there was people looking into india, and india looking outwards, and indians all around the world, which i always claim are the biggest asset to india, because there are so many of us, and we can always turn around the corner in new york or london or hungary and find an indian somewhere. They felt like attaching themselves to things back home. I think all those things came together. And in a certain sense, antiestablishment was over, people were not angsty, people were easy. And i have said all this because i have read it somewhere. Laughter. Honestly that is the fun part of it. The fact is, it was just sweet and nice to make the film. Applause. Its great that it has such longevity. Let me ask you this. Few people can outdo you in terms of a Fan Following around the world. With your fans, do you actively enjoy engaging with them or does it ever feel like an obligation that you have to do . If i say that, it sounds like i am being humble. Thats what people think sometimes, i am really humble, but they come from a place where entertainment is extremely important but engagement is even more. And over the years, in the last 25 years, the fact that i became suddenly such a big star, which i never imagined, i can still not comprehend the magnitude of it. I cannot understand, i am still really shocked at the fact that people love me so much after so many years and even after disappointing very often and doing some good stuff also, for me, it is just very important to meet everybody. For me, meeting fans is the only opportunity where i feel i am somehow trying to say thank you or being grateful orjust being able to say, i dont know why you like me, but thanks and keep liking me its that kind of a situation. I dont even like calling them fans, to be honest. I just love the people who love me so much, and i want to meet them because my line of work doesnt give me many opportunities, i am on a studio floorfor many hours a day, ijust want to meet people and spend time with them. Having said that, no pictures after this interview. Laughter i heard that you dont think you are a particularly good dancer, is that right . Yes. Im petrified when i have to do songs, in the films, and more often than not i will be obviously co partnered by some of the most amazing and beautiful and fantastically graceful ladies the indian Film Industry has ever produced, all such superb dancers, and i am such a nincompoop. I have four or five left feet. I am really pathetic. And i have to tell you, honestly, you dont believe it, because of course they save me, the choreographers and the directors and the actresses that i have worked with. I dont know if your assessment of your dancing is totally accurate because i have seen some very impressive moves, there is a film with a sequence where you are dancing on top of a train, and that is an incredible bit of cinema, was that difficult to do . That was one of the funnest things to do, because when you are on top of a moving train, they are not going to give you steps like this, so theyjust said, just do what you can. And all i could do was this, so ijust did that. I want to show off a little. Im the only person on the train who is not tied down to the train. Everybody else is. It is dangerous . I would like to now show off and say, it was extremely dangerous. Only a few people in the world can do it, and the other one is not alive anymore. It was one of the most fun things, and that song and dance i can do anytime, because it only involves four steps. So how about, you start it, and ill follow. No, no, no, no. Theres no way i am doing that, im the most clumsiest person alive come on, tom. No no, you have to do it. Can ijust do a very bad pun . These steps, any tom, dick, and harry can do. No no stand with me. Ok, i ll stand with you. Applause oh dear. I love that sequence in the movie. It is brilliant. Was it difficult to do . No, actually in three days we shot it. The director was very clear, theyjust wanted this energy. It was good fun. Dealing with movies in general, contemporary movies, are there any particular favourite that you had, films that be made recently that you have been impressed by . I think gully boy was nice. I like the story of a underdog, rising up and using his talent instead of falling prey to what the parents want and then coming out on top. It has songs, it has dances, but it has a different kind of a setting, so it is not your typical indie film and it still has a lot of the tropes used and arranged differently. I think that was good, and the performances, of course. That film has been put forward as indias submission for the oscars, hasnt it . One of the things that interest me in a way is the academy, the oscars institution is 90 years old but it has only been on five occasions that an indian film has got a nomination. Do you think there is a bias towards indian cinema, that it doesnt get more recognition by organizations by the Academy Awards . Sometimes, we choose a film which we think is the best indian entry, and more often than not it is, but perhaps it does not fall into the way that oscar looks at cinema for the rest of the world. I hope that that changes, but from the indian side, all the top filmmakers and associations should make an effort to understand what does oscar desire from india as a film that they would like to look up. Im sure, the thousands of them is we make we will find seven or ten. So that is the reason, i think, not a bias. One of the things that i really like about indian cinema is how self sufficient it is. It has its own industry, its own star system, and it really can get along without hollywood. I think hollywood only owns about 10 of the indian market. Do indians really care about what the rest of the world thinks about their cinema in a way, because it is so self sufficient . I think if i was to look at it from an artistic point of view, every artist wants more and more recognition, so i think on that basis, yes, it matters to us indians and everyone. It makes us very proud if we can take our work around the world. Having said that, the self sufficiency that you talk about, i dont want to be the harbinger of doom, but it wont be for long if we are not able to move with the times in terms of changing the cinema for indian audience, i think the Younger Generation has access to a lot more around the world that we have to somehow cater to the young ones of india more than the rest of the world. Bollywood had its metoo moment a year ago. Did you see it coming in any way at all . Its been a conversation everywhere in the world. At least in the cinematic world and media world, it has made us a little more aware that it may not happen so easily or with such flippancy or with such a men dominated zone, so i think that was a good thing, and i hope that sticks around. Do you think there has been really significant change as a result of the Metoo Movement . Of course. I think awareness has happened and it will make a big change, because people now are wary, people now are worried, and a little scared, and it should not be taken inaway. Nobody takes it for granted anymore, let me end it at that. People see you ultimately as a performer, have you ever thought of directing at all . Would that interest you . I would, but i would tell people if they are interested infilmmaking, ifind being a director, and an honest director, a very lonelyjob. I think it is the singular most lonelyjob anyone can do. Here you are, kind of playing god, you are making a film, you are telling the actors how to act, choosing the dialogue, making the script, selling it to the audience, editing it in dark rooms, dont know when to say ok or not but go with your gut, and when the film comes out you are all alone in the success and failure of it. I think being a director is an extremely lonelyjob. If i became a director, it will get into a place where i will feel perhaps lonely and sad. Right now, ifeel alone and happy, but i may become lonely and sad. I would love to direct an action film. I want to grow up and be christopher nolan, but i dont know if i have the gumption. You are an incredibly accomplished actor. What do you want your legacy to be in terms of what you pass on to Younger Generations . If i can pass on the culture of immense hard work with a lot of humour, and without trying to feel that you worked hard. If you can wear your success like a t shirt, not like a tuxedo. If you can be easy about the fact that you got the opportunities to do well but they came about only because you worked hard, and thats it. There is nothing more important to your work than that. That you worked hard, enjoy yourself, gave a few good laughs, and if it makes you a star, so be it. Wear it like a t shirt. If it doesnt make you a star, at least you worked hard and enjoyed yourself. Shah rukh khan, thank you so much for doing this interview. It means a lot to me. Thank you for being so generous in your response. Thank you for the coffee. Shah rukh khan is equal to what water is to india, what air is to india. I have memorised each of his dialogues, each of his songs. I probably could do each of the steps that he does in all of his movies. He is very honest, very humble, and a guy who teaches the value of hard work. He has given me the inspiration to do something in life, become someone. In many ways, its not just about acting, its about the personality of that person. The way he can talk, the way he can make people want him, that is a very important part of him. Thank you very much. Hello, again. Some very windy weather on the way overnight tonight courtesy of the first named storm to approach the British Isles this season. It is storm atiyah, this area of cloud you see racing towards the coastline of ireland, this is going to be bringing some short lived, localised ferocious gusts of wind. We could get gusts of 80 mph around exposed coasts and hills in the south west ireland but here in the uk, our strongest winds come through overnight across wales, south west england. Quite windy for a time in the west midlands, gusts could reach 65 to 75 mph. Winds this strong are capable of bringing down some tree branches so there is the risk of some disruption to power and transport to take us into the first part monday. For monday, for most of us it is a sunny day coming up, there will be a few showers around some of our coastal areas, particularly northern scotland and some coming down the north sea. Despite the sunshine and temperatures of five to 10 degrees, it is going to feel bitter in the east on account of those strong northerly winds. The final stretch campaigning intensifies with days to go to the general election. In the key battlegrounds, politicians have been out canvassing for every possible vote ahead of the countrys decision on thursday. In india, at least 40 people are killed in a fire at a factory making school bags in delhi. A man is arrested after video emerges of alleged racial abuse of Manchester United players during yesterdays derby. And an emotional victory for anthonyjoshua, as he becomes a two time world heavyweight champion. Good afternoon. With just four days to go till the general election, political leaders are spending the day on the campaign trail, emphasising their key messages. Borisjohnson called thursdays vote a historic chance to move forward, whileJeremy Corbyn said his party is offering an ambitious plan to transform the country. Our Political Correspondent Jonathan Blake reports. A warm welcome in wales today forJeremy Corbyn, shoring up support in seats he needs to win. His message, that labour would transform the economy through investment in Public Services at levels not seen for decades. You cant cut your way to prosperity, you invest your way to prosperity and there is no more important investment than investing in young people, children and the next generation, and that is what. Cheering and applause. And that is what i want our Labour Government to do. Borisjohnson and the conservatives may be ahead in the polls, but it is still too close to call. Hello, mr walker, borisjohnson here. Hitting the phones today, he talked up his plan for a new immigration system, and the message he has hammered home since the start. We are a party that is going to get brexit done, by when . By by january the 31st, byjanuary the 31st, and weve got a deal that is ready to go. An absolutely fantastic deal. How many members of the conservative party are standing at this election supporting our deal . Every single one. Both main parties are working to wina one. Both main parties are working to win a majority at westminster, meaning they can form a government and put their plans in place. In this unpredictable election, there is every chance that might not happen, and if neither labour or the conservatives win enough support, the smaller parties and their policies will come into play. The Scottish National party leader has made it clear labour would have her support and suggested todayJeremy Corbyn would be relying on the snp to get into power. I will never do anything that puts borisjohnson into downing street. He doesnt need to worry. But in order to get queens speech in the budget through, the labour party, if any minority position, they need the support of another party. If the snp wins in scotland, i will help with that in the interests of scotland. Smiling in sheffield today, despite feeling a squeeze on the polls, jo swinson says neither borisjohnson norJeremy Corbyn is fit to be Prime Minister, so what to then if her party holds the balance of power . We have already, in the last couple of years, been working very constructively across party lines, with labour mps, with conservative mps and nationalist mps, green mps, independent mps, we will agree to try to secure a peoples vote, and that constructive spirit will be the way the lib dems approach things after the election. The stages being set for more drama at westminster. Injusta set for more drama at westminster. Injust a few set for more drama at westminster. In just a few days the election will over and the votes cast will give us a new story to tell. Jonathan blake, bbc news. As the parties place considerable emphasis on their social media campaining, Community Groups set up to discuss local issues on facebook have become hotbeds of political discussion. Our media editor amol rajan reports from hastings on the south coast on the role online forums are playing in the election. You have probably heard a bit about the election today, and chances are, you read about it on Facebook First of all. Research by bbc trending, the bbc social media investigations unit, shows how much of the election conversation around the country is happening in Facebook Groups. Hastings and rye, a marginal, illustrates this story. A closed Facebook Group called hastings 2020 decides aims to be impartial. It was founded by plant biologist, russell hall, who keeps it on a tight leash. A lot of people see facebook as a threat to democracy, would you argue that its actually a benefit . Very much it can, yes. I mean, the ability for citizens right across the town to actually talk directly with each other is great. What i am seeing though is a lot of. Well, non factual information being passed around, lets say. It is fake news. These Facebook Groups show the growing power of self appointed Group Moderators who curate discussion amongst communities that are sometimes bigger than the readership of the local paper. This is where so much of the discussion about this election is taking place, and often it is the groups that were set up to talk about hedgehogs and wheelie bins that have suddenly become the political wild west. Even when they are not about politics. St leonards is on the west of the borough of hastings. Over a decade ago, an open Facebook Group was set up to celebrate st leonards as a tourist destination. Its founder died in 2010
