Off a viewing platform at the tate modern art gallery in london. Jonty bravery whos 18, hurled the young boy off the tenth floor platform, back in august. Heres helena wilkinson. The 6 year old boy was with his mother on this tenth floor viewing platform, when out of nowhere a teenager appeared, picked him up, held him over the railings and threw him. He fell 100 feet on to this concrete roof. There was a little commotion with a very loud primal scream. The childs mother then tried to climb the rail. I restrained her and pulled her back. He didnt seem to have any remorse, hejust almost giggled at one point, saying, i did it, yeah, i did it. The boy was treated at the scene, before being taken away by paramedics on a stretcher, under this blue tarpaulin. He suffered a bleed to the brain and life changing injuries. Today, jonty bravery, whos autistic and suffers from a personality disorder, admitted trying to murder the boy. The teenager was under the care of the local authority. After he was arrested by the police, he told them he had planned to hurt someone at tate modern so he could be on the television, and he wanted people to know he was unhappy with the care he was getting. Four months on, and the little boy is still recovering. Today, his parents said. For the family, the horror and trauma they experienced that day will never leave them. Helena wilkinson, bbc news, at the old bailey. For almost three decades, one word has stood between two nations macedonia. A subject of a bitter dispute between greece and the now renamed republic of North Macedonia. A warning, the programme includes some scenes of violence. For three decades, greece has been locked in a dispute with its neighbour over the name macedonia. Last year a breakthrough day. Reese agreed to recognise its neighbour and the neighbour agreed to change its name to North Macedonia, but the deal has been fiercely resisted both sides of the border. For me, as a greek, this dispute is an important part of modern greek identity. It feels like i never really knew the degree to which this country was divided. And for me, as an australian with macedonian red the dispute is central to unlocking my complicated family history. I feel really sad that the family separated. A year on from the agreement, we are travelling to greece to north sidonia to see for ourselves how well this deal is working. Can the agreement finally sold the fears rivalries that have existed in this region for so long 01 existed in this region for so long or will the issue of a name continue to plague both countries future . Athens in the heat of the summer is not the place for hasty decisions. But it is the birthplace of democracy, political intrigue is never far away. Today is election day and among the big issues, is the agreement. The reviled demonstration, surrendering the name of the ancient greek promise province of macedonia was too much to bear. The final straw, a visit by Kyriakos Mitsotakis. You need to know that you cannot escape the wave of history here. Going up in athens, i was constantly surrounded by greeces glorious past, especially as my dad is an amateur archaeologist. And this is the latest reminder. This statute goes to the heart of the naming dispute, the legacy of perhaps the most famous soldier in history. Alexander the great came from an unfashionable province called macedonia but the name will always be logged to greece, the statute seems to be saying. It was only in 1913 that a border was created separated greek province of macedonia an event territory to the north. In 1991, as yugoslavia tore itself apart, this Northern Territory decided to call itself the republic of macedonia. Greece never recognised that name. Almost 30 years later, time is up for the Prime Minister and his syriza party. A new leader is arriving. Kyriakos mitsotakis had made no secret of his opposition to the prespa agreement but now he will be in charge of implementing it. Just outside athens lies the part of the radius. It has been central to greece as prosperity for century and it was here my grandparents boarded a ship for it was here my grandparents boarded a shipfora it was here my grandparents boarded a ship for a new life in australia. The islamic names have been changed to greek words and, although the left as a greek citizens, they took with them very separate macedonian culture. I want to get to the bottom of their story and the gaps of my own identity. To really understand this issue, we have had to leave athens and head north. Courtney and i grew athens and head north. Courtney and igrew up athens and head north. Courtney and i grew up with different sides of the story. Greece is second city is a capital of the greek province of macedonia. Many proud greeks, the use of the name macedonia for anything outside the state was a travesty. And 0liver farr, is one such greek. Olive farmer. He felt so strongly about the name, last year he began to organise resistance to the proposed change. For him, the prespa agreement presents a fundamental problem. It is not just it is notjust history or land that the greeks feel is underfed. Many businesses are worried about competition from North Macedonia. This factor is concerned people will be confused by products from North Macedonia simply labelled macedonia. Salaries in greece are much more than in macedonia. The products from North Macedonia must have the name but they do not put this in the agreement so we have this problem today. His solution is to develop a greek brand from macedonia that only greg macedonian product will carry. The stash greek macedonian products will carry. The date we were in town, the Prime Minister was visiting the ministry for macedonia and greece. Despite his fiery words against prespa agreement, Kyriakos Mitsotakis has little to reverse the agreement. His father was also Prime Minister and, despite opposition, agreement. His father was also Prime Ministerand, despite opposition, he allowed the neighbouring country to be called the former yugoslav republic of macedonia. Prime minister, what are you doing about the prespa agreement . We can talk later if you want. Although i tried to press him on the agreement he was unwilling to talk but later that night, once again he made his feelings clear. Although the prespa agreement was not signed by him and he may dislike the concession of the name, he will be bound by it. In any case, it suits the geopolitics. Greece is surrounded by potential threats. To the north of the country lies the historically turbulent balkans which will never be known for peace and stability. Bringing North Macedonia inside the eu tent was supposed to address this recently the countrys european aspirations were derailed. In their attempt to project an image ofa in their attempt to project an image of a great capital, this centre has been completely rebuild but the renovations infuriated greece who felt it macedonian history was being stolen. The centrepiece was of this stature, bearing an uncanny resemblance to alexander the great although officially it is known as warrior on a horse. Amidst all this nationalism, a new Prime Minister was elected. After two decades of greece blocking his countrys eu membership, he put his political career on the line with the prespa agreement but the rebuff from brussels means he to may lose his job. Do you feel you have paid the price for solving a problem everyone wa nted price for solving a problem everyone wanted to see solved . It is a kind of punishment. We take responsibility and change the constitution with a total majority because of changing our constitutional name. A very painful process. The country was bitterly divided over the name change. When a referendum on the issue was held last year, two thirds of the country boycotted the vote. In order to change the constitution, nine Opposition Mps had to side with zaev. When you saw the mps attacked. All mps who voted for the prespa agreement and changing the constitution. Nine change physical side to support the future of our country and really they are until today under threat. Whether president macron announced his decision, though admittedly underfed. Two years ago a mob stormed the Parliament Building protesting the election of a new speaker. Zaev was badly injured that day. The leading opposition party, vmrodpmne, is a day. The leading opposition party, vmro dpmne, is a conservative, highly nationalist movement. 0ne vmro dpmne, is a conservative, highly nationalist movement. One of the meeting mps were strongly opposed to the prespa agreement. You say that North Macedonia has reaped all the disadvantages of this deal, but within greece there is also a lot of resentment towards it. Having North Macedonia within the eu and nato was designed to shore up the troubled area of the balkans. Zayevis the troubled area of the balkans. Zayev is clearly worried about the consequences if the eu doesnt open its doors. Balkans, 100 years ago, there was was. In our country, 2001, conflict between albanians and macedonians. What has happened in kosovo and croatia and bosnia, everywhere in the balkans. Remember this period of time. There is a lot of feelings. There is a lot of victims from these was 0livia, with a lot of sensitivity. We need to ta ke a lot of sensitivity. We need to take care about that. But others also need to take care, Like European Union and neighbours. For many younger citizens, like blajen, being inside the eu is much more important than the countrys name. This dispute has been going on for 30 years, this dispute has been going on for 30 yea rs, pretty this dispute has been going on for 30 years, pretty much your whole life. What was the impact of this . think people, especially young people, were kind of getting bored with this topic, constantly being asked what the name issue is, how you will resolve this, what are the possibilities. I think we all feel quite european. We want to live with open borders and have movement of young people and learn from each other what the other culture is. The youngin other what the other culture is. The young in North Macedonia have already shown an appetite for dissent, pulsing buildings with colour bombs to protest against corruption. But blaznen feels that with the eu decision, the young will vote with their feet. We live in the zist vote with their feet. We live in the 21st century. Everything is one click away. And i think young people feel that they deserve better and they can do better in other countries. So that is why they leave. North macedonia is caught in limbo. Having changed its name, the country will be hoping to have more to show for it when eu leaders meet next year. Back on the greek side of the border, there is a group of villages where the definition of macedonian is even more complicated. Many of the older generation here grew up speaking what is now known as macedonian, a slavic language but was later found. Their language as macedonian, a slavic language but was laterfound. Their language may be closer to skopje than athens, but they didnt feel an affinity for one 01 they didnt feel an affinity for one or the other. To them, they were simply macedonian. It is here that my family roots lie and i have come to meet my grandmothers sister, who i call ristana, who is my oldest surviving relative in this part of the world. Good morning feel really emotional, actually, because it reminds me of my mom, and she lost her mum and her sister. I feel really sad that, but, um. I sister. I feel really sad that, but, um. I never got to meet my mums mum. Ristana grew up speaking the slavic language, but after marrying a greek man she rarely spoke it. And they could be other reasons. When she was at school, slavic speaking children in the village we re speaking children in the village were beaten if they strayed into their mother tongue. Life here has been hard. The village was occupied by the nazis and the insuring greek civil war pitted families against one another. What was it like in the village growing 7 eventually, my grandparents left this land in search of opportunities abroad. They settled in western australia, but maintained a strong sense of their macedonian identity. My sense of their macedonian identity. My mom grew up speaking the macedonian language, and when i came along the language and the culture was passed on to another generation. For those who stayed in the village, like ristana, for those who stayed in the village, like rista na, identity for those who stayed in the village, like ristana, identity has shifted over time and she now firmly considers herself greek. Backin back in thessaloniki, it is ochi day, greeces national day. In the greek macedonian capital, there is also a protest about the prespa agreement. The protesters messages short and familiar. Macedonia is greek only. Here it says that a silence is complicity in the North Macedonian plan. Yeah, they say the agreement is an embarrassment. In the midst of the protest is the olive farmer we met at the start of the journey. He tells us the protest will try to march towards the official 0hi day parade. As expected, the police are not prepared to let greeces National Baby hijacked by the macedonian protest. National day be hijacked. This is democracy this is democracy in greece a compromise is reached. The protesters are allowed to take the position by the side of the main parade. 0ne position by the side of the main parade. One year on, here in thessaloniki, the wounds from the name deal still feel particularly fresh. It feels like i never really knew the degree to which this country was divided until right this minute. You can see this intense nationalism up here, while in athens there are people who feel this way, sure, this kind of big display isnt really is widespread. 0hi day day, literally no day, marks greeces refusal to bow to mussolini in 1940. Across the country, there are parades. A chance to revel in National Pride and to embrace your greek identity. Although 0hi day is a commemoration of the past, it is also a celebration of the present. And there is clearly more appetite for this than for the anti prespa protest. In greece and North Macedonia, the prespa agreement tried to solve a thorny issue that goes to the heart of identity. A name. History is always central to National Identity. But when a countrys future is uncertain, it is easy to understand why people turn to the past. For my family, there was always a sense of their macedonian identity was not acknowledged, making them hold onto it more tightly. The same is true of almost everyone we met. They worry that by conceding to others, they will lose part of themselves. At this time of global uncertainty, the question of National Identity seems more urgent than ever. In the case of the name macedonia, compromise will always come at a cost. Hello there. It does look like this weekend is going to be a fairly unsettled one, particularly for the second half of the week and, as low pressure takes over, bringing strong winds, Gale Force Winds for many of us, and also showers and long spells of rain, some of which will be heavy in places. I have to stress that weekend doesnt start off on such a bad note, thanks to this ridge of High Pressure, winds will be lighter for a while. To the west, this area of low pressure will arrive late in the day, especially across northern and western areas. For much of england and wales it should be a dry start with some sunny spells around. The further north and west that you are, the clouds will increase through the day, as will be south westerly wind and the rain will begin to pop up, especially across scotland. Heavier in western areas. Temperatures are not bad for this time of year. Highs of around 10 or 11 degrees. Saturday evening and saturday night, more wet and windy weather sweeps across the country. Some heavy rain in places, followed by blustery showers across northern and western areas. Because of the strength of the wind and also the rain and showers, temperatures should not really fall below six or seven. Sunday, this is the pressure chart. You can see how many isobars there are on the charts. It will be a windy day. A real squeeze in the isobars arriving across ireland later on. More on that in a moment. Sunday, it is a bright day, sunny spells around, especially across eastern areas, lots of showers in the north and west, some of them heavy and thundery. Merging together to produce longer spells of rain in places. Some wintriness over higher ground, temperatures in single figures in the north, 10 13 further south. Late on sunday, we will see this area of low pressure, which has been named by the Irish Meteorological Service as storm atiyah, is going to bring a swathe of severe gales across the republic of ireland and into northern ireland, wales and the south west, gusts of 70 miles an hour or more in exposure, but very windy spell right across the country. This could cause some disruption. Stay tuned to bbc local radio and subsequent weather forecasts. Very windy on the start of monday as the storm clears off into the near continent. You will notice another ridge of High Pressure trying to build in behind it from the west as the day wears on. It will be a windy day starting monday. Quite a bit of sunshine around. Very windy down the east coast, with further showers through the day. As that wind begins to topple, winds should start to ease and we will see increasing amounts of sunshine. A fairly cool day in the north, just about making double figures in the south. A brief settled spell, because the next spell of wet and windy weather moves in for the tuesday, followed by blustery showers and sunny spells on wednesday. So the weather really is very up and down. This is bbc news. Im martin stanford. Within the past hour, a jury in los angeles has found in favour of elon musk in a libel case involving a british cave diving expert. The two had engaged in a public argument about how to rescue children trapped in a cave in thailand. In a tweet, mr musk called the Vernon Unsworth pedo guy a phrase he argued was not meant literally. Mr unsworths lawyer has given his reaction.
