To tax americas tech giants a us threat to target billions of dollars of fancy french goods. Plus the video sharing app tiktok has been hit with a Class Action Lawsuit in the us, after claims that it sent data to china and well be getting the inside track on crowd funding the appetite for ordinary people to invest in start ups shows no sign of letting up. Well be talking to the founder of one firm crowdcube about the appeal. Is it about backing a winner or being a part of something . Do you have a morning routine . Apparently those who don tfit in a trip to the gym and make a fresh smoothie before work are underperforming. How important is your morning routine . Get in touch just use the hashtag bbcworklife. Hello and welcome to worklife. As long as this programme is a part of your routine in the morning, forget the smoothie and the gym. Of your routine in the morning, forget the smoothie and the gymm really doesnt matter President Trump is in the uk and meeting allies at a nato 70th anniversary gatheriung in london this week. Dominating trumps agenda are threats posed by china, including its dominance of 56 telecoms networks. America has warned its allies against using equipment made by china s huawei saying the kit could be used by beijing for spying. These concerns stem from a chinese law that requires Domestic Companies to cooperate with the government on security matters. Critics say that this law could compel huawei to be a vehicle for spying. Huawei denies the allegations made by washington. Meanwhile, germanys chancellor Angela Merkel has also sounded a warning, saying europe a key part of nato needs to have a unified policy on the rollout of the next generation sg networks to address espionage concerns. The concerns seem very real, dont they . With me now is matthew howett, a telecoms analyst with at Assembly Research can we start in the technical level, the idea of espionage, its a real fear, but is it real in practice . Thats it, weve all got concerns about how much influence china has in our lives and it extends to the mobile network. I think the evidence so mobile network. I think the evidence so far suggests that is not the case, particularly in the uk, all of the huawei kit has been subject to investigation by the Cyber Security centre for almost a decade. Theyve taken it apart with a screwdriver and they found nothing but sloppy coding which they think could be improved but certainly not the back doors that President Trump and others allege. But the potential may be there, i know american viewers will say, if you have a Software Update that could be the time malign softwa re update that could be the time malign software is put in, you didnt realise you being spied upon. |j think everyone realises there is an element of risk but you can mitigate against that by doing this sort of measures weve done here but by diversifying that supply chain, ensuring you have other benders other than huawei, youve got Swedish Companies like ericsson for example, the mobile operators used to complement but they are not ready yet. Huawei is very close to being able to say we can do it and do it now and everyone seems to want it. Thats right. Theyve been doing it. Thats right. Theyve been doing itafair it. Thats right. Theyve been doing it a fair bit quicker than their rivals, some people think 12 18 month leadership in terms of 56 capability that while they have. Which is huge. Big number, especially when you have the whole world competing with one another to get 56 in our pockets first. But as nato allies gather today, supposed to bea nato allies gather today, supposed to be a bit ofa nato allies gather today, supposed to be a bit of a party, 70 years old they are celebrating, but these issues are the kind of issues they are grappling with when it comes to security and defence. Its about technology now as opposed to boots on the ground. It is and these issues arent going away, weve been having this game of political football with huawei for a while now and the bigger countries that are pa rt and the bigger countries that are part of nato have a stance and are positioning on it, but it comes down to the issue of Cyber Security, thats where the next battle will get fought and it will be online. Cyber warfare is everything at the moment in nato discussions but suppose, there is this a split between the european perspective and america, broadly speaking. Is there anything the us could do to persuade European Countries we can find another way . Presumably its about that, isnt it . It is, ithink the thing trump is realising is wobbly isa thing trump is realising is wobbly is a big customer of american companies, they buy a lot of stuff in the us, Something Like 11 billion worth of income to the us as a result of huawei so its not as easy as getting rid of it, that money has to be replaced and they need to work to work out how they mitigate the risk rather than cut it entirely. I wonder if they are going to have cake today, candles, 70 candles . Dysfunctional family, isnt it. Thank you. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news the fbi says faceapp and other mobile applications developed in russia pose a potential counterintelligence threat. The comments were made in a letter to us senator Chuck Schumer after he called for an investigation into the app. The face editing tool went viral earlier this year but prompted privacy concerns. Former malaysian leader najib razak is in court in kuala lumpur today to defend his conduct in the 1mdb scandal. Its the first of several trials linked to the multi billion dollar fraud. Set up in 2009, the Sovereign Wealth Fund was designed to boost malaysias economy through Strategic Investments but billions of dollars went missing. The us has threatened the European Union with new tariff hikes related to the airbus subsidy dispute at the wto. Us trade representative Robert Lighthizer raised the possibility of higher levies after securing washington s latest legal victory in the long running dispute. A wto panel on monday said that brussels had failed to comply with its rulings. Video sharing app tiktok has been hit with a Class Action Lawsuit in the us that claims it transferred vast quantities of user data to china. Lets explain, for those who dont know, its the video sharing app mainly used by young people, teenagers, they video themselves filming singing songs, videos, that sort of thing. Not that dissimilar from instagram but shorter. Extremely popular, a lot of young people s data is on there. The lawsuit accuses the company of surreptitiously taking content without user consent. Karishma vaswani has been following the story in singapore. Sta rts starts off as great fun, grows into something massive and then it runs into confrontation and contention. That is to talk all over. David, i dont know if youve used it. I have yes, i have certainly dry it, there is an element of addiction, when you start using the app but its not getting any easier for the company, last week we reported on how it became embroiled in that censorship row over the account of a us teenager who said her content had been blocked from the app because she posted videos raising awareness of the fate of muslims in china. Tick tock is owned by a chinese tech firm, the company which has this global offering, the social media app global offering, the social media app says its run very differently from how the chinese operations are iuii from how the chinese operations are run which means it has come it says, different networks, different servers, different censorship laws but now its emerged that another student come and the United States, has lodged a lawsuit, class action suit against tick tock, claiming its end user data from the states to china. Ive looked through the Court Documents with this lawsuit and its pretty extensive, it claims the company transferred vast quantities of use are dated to china and says it took content without the permission of users. Tick tock says in the past it doesnt store any of it stayed in china, it stores it in the United States and singapore, contacted the company for a comment oii contacted the company for a comment on this but so far ive not received a response yet. Lots to talk about obviously on this firm backed and owned by a chinese tech giant. Thank you very much. Who knew, david using tick tock, ive not tried it yet, i am obviously the odd one out. But lets look at the markets, they are pretty spooked by all the trade and tariff activity in the last 2a hours, during the trading session on wall street on monday, we saw the us say we will impose tariffs on aluminium and steel coming from brazil and argentina into the us. Because the currency has been diwali quite significantly, thats unfair for americans. That spooked traders and then of course, we had news of more tariffs being piled on french goods, perhaps, champagne, handbags, posh goods coming from france, into the us. We have more details on that ina the us. We have more details on that in a moment butjust to say all of this is a real concern for traders. Lets look at europe. The optimism that there might be a deal between the us and china on phase one of trade discussions has been evaporated by all this news and you can see in europe its pretty mixed, germany and france bucking the trend but overall, markets are fairly gloomy. David. Sally, thank you. You mention champagne and handbags, thats a certain demographic who would be affected by this tariff increase. The us is preparing tariffs on 2. 4bn worth of french exports as retaliation against the countrys new Digital Services tax. The top us trade official said the new tax, which france approved injuly, unfairly targets american tech giants and us action would deter other countries from taking similar steps. From san francisco, here s dave lee. Since the Biggest Tech Companies in the western world are usually created in silicon valley, washington feels this digital tax u nfa i rly washington feels this digital tax unfairly targets american success stories. It is now proposing if france goes ahead and imposes a 3 levy on the revenues of Companies Like amazon, google and facebook, it would slap a huge tariffs on french exports like cheese, champagne and handbags. France has said it will drop its tax plan if the rest of the European Union can collectively come up European Union can collectively come up with an alternative, one which taxes sales as well as profits. Those efforts are being blocked by the likes of ireland, a country that has a low Corporate Tax rate and as a result, is home to the European Headquarters of those american tech giants. So what we are seeing is another trade row brewing under President Trump but one that has troubled previous administrations too. The us has long felt that europe is coming down too hard on american firms because europe doesnt have an apple or google of its own. Time now for our daily look at some of the newspaper and website stories which have caught our eye. Joining me is kirsty bashforth, quayfive founder and author of Culture Shift thanks so much forjoining us, where are we starting . Starting with the morning routine, very important to me but i wont bore you with those details. In the atlantic, the false promise of morning routines. This is fun reading, isnt it . It really is. From all sorts of peoplepos mac fun routines whether business people, academics, actors, all sorts of morning routines, fascinating. It talks about this is the new self help, talks about this is the new self help, the talks about this is the new self help, the way to be talks about this is the new self help, the way to be productive and savvy morning routine, whatever it is. Its what is in that routine, its mind boggling, Mark Wahlberg, the hollywood star, starts at three in the morning. 2 15am. He literally has a list of stuff he gets through before 8am. Including golf before adm. I have a friend who will start the day at 5am with six holes of golf, thats how he starts his day. He does that every day, hes retired. I start my morning every morning with exercise, its the way to get my brain going and it has become a habit. Thats the danger, its the difference between a habit and an otter obsession, the Mark Wahlberg mad obsession, its good to get the adrenaline going, get the endorphins going all of that but this got to be a limit. It talks about the pressure putting on those who dont have a morning routine, i havent made a smoothie today or are not going to make it to the gym, you kind of feel like you are feeling somehow. Some people are nighttime people, they dont need a morning routine, i dont think we should put pressure 011 routine, i dont think we should put pressure on people to have one but if it works for you, great. Can i say, iam if it works for you, great. Can i say, i am on air on at 5am and people get in touch with me when im not in work that i have ruined their day because im not a part of their morning routine, if they take a day off they say when are you coming back, you are spoiling my day, it is like that, people get used to the person on the television on the radio or whatever it is as part of their morning routine. Radio or whatever it is as part of their morning routinelj radio or whatever it is as part of their morning routine. I find that myself but they should stick you on iplayer, record you from the previous day, stick you back on. The routine of get out of bed and get dressed. Moving on, the morning routine, for some in india they might get to work on one of these new superbikes. Great story, uber india expanding from 52 200 cities by the end of next year but the vast majority will be bags and i was in jakarta a couple of years ago and i saw Companies Like grab taxi, bikes everywhere. Its motorbikes. Super fa st everywhere. Its motorbikes. Super fast way, you are sitting in a car, the banks are going past you. Fast way, you are sitting in a car, the banks are going past youlj fast way, you are sitting in a car, the banks are going past you. I can see that taking off in london with the congestion we have. Absolutely, i had the opportunity in paris a couple of years ago, certainly saves you time, great fun, its hairy. Probably not the safest. Exactly, but thats going to work. |j probably not the safest. Exactly, but thats going to work. I would think so and looking at the expansion in jakarta, the think so and looking at the expansion injakarta, the place was crowded with banks. I also think there is an opportunity for different business models, could we use a delivery taxi to get our Prescription Medication from the chemist, for example . Moving on to the business pages of the times newspaper, lindy, a company that many of us may never have heard of, a peer to peer lender, for example you as an investor give them money, they lend to others who need it, they lend to others who need it, they are going bust. They went bust in may. A bit of press injuly, realisation for investors that they are not going to get as much money back as they thought, a case of read the small print, what you might be sold but not be all of the details in the second thing i would say, if it promises big returns and probably has bigger risks than you thought. Basically saying creditors are ahead of the investors now, they will get as much money back as they thought. Thank you, good to have you here. Still to come do you want to back a winner or be a pa rt do you want to back a winner or be a part of something . We look at crowdfunding, more of us investing in start ups, we talk to the founder of one firm. Youre with worklife from bbc news. With the irish border featuring so large in the brexit debate. Our Business Reporter ben thompson is in county fermanagh, Northern Irelandhes been speaking to local businesses about what they are looking out for in this years election. dtl over to you. Good morning, welcome to enniskillen, here on the banks of loch earn, as you can see, running right along the border between the republic of ireland and Northern Ireland, so close to the border, they do business across the border every single day this boat usually busyin every single day this boat usually busy in the summer, quieter now. But its really important time for businesses to work out what they wa nt businesses to work out what they want to hear from the election in the west must constituency in the uk. The west must constituency in the uk. Lough erne. Teresa runs a Marketing Firm here. We touched on the border issue, its important for you, everyday life and business for you, everyday life and business for you involves crossing the border. My office is 11 miles from where i live and across the border at least twice and across the border at least twice a day in order to get to work. My issues that are forefront in my mind are infrastructure, skills and broadband. So in terms of infrastructure id like to see more infrastructure id like to see more infrastructure coming to the west, or accessibility for businesses to be able to travel more easily to the north east and further afield. In terms of our brain drain in skills you have a generation of people who are being educated and they are leaving man and they are not coming back and they could easily contribute to the economy and in terms of broadband, broadband is key to my business, i do a lot of work remotely for clients and my clients need broadband as well as i do and it would be great to see better infrastructure around broadband. The idea of broadband, something so close to your heart, you moved away, to england, then you came back to set up your business, its about bringing business back. Absolutely, set i set up my business 13 years ago and people will still ask me why or how do you survive, how does your business survive in fermanagh . I think if you want to work and if you have a business that can work in this area, there is absolutely nothing stopping someone coming back to fermanagh and setting up a business. Nice to see you. Thank you. Some of the issues business continue with. If so many other things they want to hear from politicians. Whether they will get it, 905 politicians. Whether they will get it, 90s to the board. Youre watching worklife. A reminder of our top story president to appear for the 70th anniversary of nato. Getting people to invest in your business idea has never been an easy task but the growth of crowdfunding platforms have slowly begun to change the way start ups get off the ground. With no background in the industry and some money from his dad, luke lang co founded crowdcube . Who have now raided more than 1bn for over 1000 start ups. Do you want me to do this one . do you want me to do this one . I am going to hand over to david. |j do you want me to do this one . I am going to hand over to david. I think its fair to say, youve never had an introduction like that. You kick this off, the time of the financial crisis. The first of your absolutely, the economic crash in 2011 was some of the inspiration behind us starting the company and it was borne out of a passion for entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. We wanted to feel the next generation of businesses so they could go on and leave their mark on the world and we can do that in a couple of ways. Helping to raise capital but helping create communities and i guess we help them raise capital. These tend to be ambitious, exciting businesses. They tend to need finance to fuel that growth. What brought them in the early days in particular . growth. What brought them in the early days in particular . I guess in the early days, post economic crash, finance for start up and early stage businesses were really challenging and difficult. Banks were no longer landing, Grant Funding from the government had been cut. Traditional sources of finance were no longer investing so there was an opportunity for a crowd cube to come m, opportunity for a crowd cube to come in, revolutionise the industry and provide british start ups and early stage businesses and European Companies now with better access to finance. Explain how you make money. We make money out of the entrepreneurs that list on our side, we charge them a fee for raising finance and we also charge the investors a small transaction fee. Asa investors a small transaction fee. As a dependent on how much they raise . It is, yes, businesses can come onto the site and they can pitch their idea and they can raise any work from £50,000, we had businesses raise up to 20 million on the site, a bank last year raised 20 million from 36,000 other customers. Worth pointing out you will have su ccesses worth pointing out you will have successes and failures but i suppose from your point of view, success is getting the money to the entrepreneur and letting them get on with it. Our success is helping those businesses raise finance so they can go on and invest in their products, ideas. But also we want to see those businesses thrive so we wa nt see those businesses thrive so we want to see them growing, establishing themselves, three of the companies that we have backed, two challenger banks were funded in the early days of the businesses and have gone on to be some of britain s greatest success stories, some of the most valuable businesses in europe today, worth over 1 billion. How do you get people who want to come on your site, how do you make sure they are not dodgy and they are not going to lead someone down the garden path . Absolutely, we have a really rigorous process, regulated by the financial conduct authority, we take that responsibility really seriously. Do that every business, every page before it goes live on the side to make sure it is fair, clear and not misleading so we fact check everything thats presented to investors. And we recognise that these are high risk investments and they are to some extent long term liquid and we make those risks abundantly clear to investors. Do they have to be start ups . Abundantly clear to investors. Do they have to be startups . New . Not at all, we have a business on the site at the minute called young planet, if youve got Young Children you know they are fickle creatures, you know they are fickle creatures, you give them a tour and they play with it obsessively for a few minutes and then they discard it, young planet is raising money on the side at the moment to provide a way for parents to be able to share and exchange those businesses, equally we have funded some fantastic businesses, mr and mrs smith, female founder, tamara lohan, raisedjust shy of £6 million last year. Shes been on this show. And go henry, and app been on this show. And go henry, and app for Young Children, helping them to manage their money better and save money. Before we let you go, whats your morning routine lie . Busy, ive got two children under the age of two, its pretty frenetic. No home made smoothies. I used to do all of that but i dont have time now. But you are looking goodin have time now. But you are looking good in it. Thanks so much, i think its fair to say, look lang, co founder of crowd cube. Its fair to say, look lang, cofounder of crowd cube. Thank you and apologies for making a right hash of introducing you under this programme, but we all have bad days. It was a bad hair day. But lets talk about your morning routine. What have you been saying to us today . She sounds like the bionic woman a gymnasium at home. So many apps. Weve had them here. You follow your routine. Do you gym at home . No, i walk the dog. Dont do as i do. The dog forces are routine. Have a really good day. Thank you for your company. Goodbye for now. Good morning.
