But the Environment Agency says the 20 Million Pound flood defences built after the 2007 floods significantly reduced the impact in areas like meadowhall in sheffield. Severe flood warnings around the river don have been in place since friday. About 400 homes have been flooded and 1200 properties evacuated. 0ur correspondent, dan johnson, has been in the village of fishlake parts of which have been underwater since last week. This is the church that has been the centre of the Community Response here. So most of them admire about this being put together but theres frustration as well. They said if its not an emergency they dont know what is and tonight theres more equipment being brought into this village to try and read it of the floodwater thatis that is set through their homes and on the fields around fish lake. There could be more rain on the way later this week. Right through, it has ripped flooring up. In the furthest reaches of fishlake, this is how life has been since friday. They are cut off and barely coping. You have been living like this for five days . Yes, trying to keep warm, sweet. No heating, no pub . No heating, no power. We had one leg eventually in the bedroom. Light. People will think why havent you gone and left . We have two dogs and ferrets, how can you take this to a church or whatever . Go down the flooded lanes and to more misery. Some are onlyjust returning to see what they lost and salvage whats left and they are asking whats next . They want everybody out of there but you cant leave if you have nowhere to go. We are all worried what we are going to do. Five days on from the heaviest rain and you can get through most of the village with a proper 4x4 but that doesnt mean there arent people still struggling and people still really angry. Communities have been amazing. The official people that should have been telling us what to do, get out of your house, and your things, even it was coming, we had no idea. Complete contrast. The only good news is that clare renewed her insurance a day before the rain came. Not everyone is covered and today flooding overflowed into the Election Campaign. We cannot leave People Living in this awful sense of fear and limbo. It is wrong it seems to be down to the local communities. This is clearly a national emergency. Winter after winter it is homes and communities that get destroyed after the result of action and long term action not being put in place. This afternoon officials met in downing street to discuss the floods. We have to prepare for more floods this winter and a huge amount of energy and effort is going into that. Pumps are starting to move the water and emergency teams are getting through. Some are still filling forgotten. They could have done a lot more. We could have had a lot more warning. But events happen forcing them to react to what is happening and what matters to people around the country. The last few days the huge number of headlines about the floods in South Yorkshire and the midlands, and as you saw though in the report of a noise, if you like from all of the opposition parties which added up to look, the conservatives in government there still a government even though we are in an Election Campaign have not done enough so theres been a furious row around resourcing for the Environment Agency and for the local fire and rescue teams. We heard there a demand that the situation is declared a national emergency. That matters in the context of the response that the government can mount. The government is keen to emphasise they are doing all they can even though the Prime Minister acknowledged theres some people that feel the more could be done. This and ask peccadilloes and for trying to co ordinate nationally the response via the Cobra Committee and as you say that news we heard from the government in the last hour oi from the government in the last hour or 0 from the government in the last hour or so that additional military personnel will be deployed in South Yorkshire to help with the recovery effort. As the Prime Minister mentioned there and as he predicted there would be of further flooding events in the weeks and months to come during the winter its a reminder that yes of course events can happen any general Election Campaign buti can happen any general Election Campaign but i weather related ones that could demand a response from governments and wannabe governments perhaps more likely in this Election Campaign in late autumn and into the winter. Well, while people in Northern England are having to clear up after the floods a different type of environmental disaster is threatening lives and homes on the other side of the world. In eastern australia, bushfires which have already killed 3 people and destroyed hundreds of homes are raging out of control. Theyve now reached the ourskirts of sydney and the authorities have said this could be the most dangerous week for bushfires australia has ever seen. Among those to have experienced the blazes firsthand is the mayor of the town of glen innes, carol sparks. She told the bbc about her experience. We had the weather that brings on this sort of catastrophe, high winds, high temperatures and all came together. We had a fire burning in ourarea fora came together. We had a fire burning in our area for a couple of weeks, and then it blew out embers onto our property and then united and itjust took off with an 80 km hour wind behind it. We had fireballs and trees on fire and walls of flame coming out on us. My home was severely damaged, my neighbours home was totally destroyed. All out trees, animals and vegetation was destroyed. The school and the bridge and the fire shared and a0 homes at least. Many people had to run, my granddaughterour partner was severely burned. He was trying to get away from us and my neighbour was killed in the car trying to get away. I believe that this is Climate Change, and this is an emergency. We could have addressed this years ago. The signs of this have been proven however its not believed by our government, they can hardly say the words Climate Change and so its a bit ofan words Climate Change and so its a bit of an uphill battle for us. That was their sparks. The Australian Government is refusing to be drawn on whether Climate Change may be a reason why these bushfires are so bad. So really first off, of all the disasters we have seen, the flooding in fires disasters we have seen, the flooding infires and disasters we have seen, the flooding in fires and various others around the globe, are they really a symptom of the Climate Crisis . Yes, absolutely. We call them unprecedented and record breaking other thing we should call them is predicted because it wasjust other thing we should call them is predicted because it was just 20 other thing we should call them is predicted because it wasjust 20 or sometimes 30 years ago that scientists are predicting this is exactly what would happen we did not cut our Greenhouse Gas emissions and thats why we are seeing these extreme events now but its worth noting that the other thing scientists are saying is because we are still not cutting emissions fast enough the truth is we havent seen anything yet im sorry to say. In the future years we are going to see even more extreme weather events we should remember its appalling what is happening in england and france and australia but as the poorest people around the world and poorest countries that suffer the most from these extreme weather events. Where does the on the sly, everything we are thinking about is how can we stop this . Can we change the trajectory we are on now . Even if we could wave a magic wand and stop all admissions tonight theres still a lot loaded in the system so we are still going to see a fair bit of warming. Of course if the scientists are saying we do cut them very rapidly and restore our Natural Habitats which can protect us from Climate Change as well as sucking carbon out of the air weve actually got a chance of avoiding some of the worst falls of runaway Climate Change. That should absolutely be by far the way of the high priority issue in this general Election Campaign and its extraordinary it ta kes campaign and its extraordinary it takes things like floods in the north of england to finally raise it up north of england to finally raise it up the political agenda. A whole group of environmental organisations this week calling on our Party Leaders to actually have a tv debate specifically about the climate and ecological emergency and most of the leaders have agreed now, we are waiting to hear from the leaders have agreed now, we are waiting to hearfrom the Prime Minister and i would like to take this opportunity to challenge the Prime Minister and say he would come on live tv debate focused specifically on the Climate Emergency and then perhaps only then do we start to see this issue commands the attention it deserves.
