Tonnes of Plastic Waste. Ill look at the impact and have some top tips on a sustainable halloween. More success for english clubs in the Champions League as chelsea beat ajax, and liverpool thumped genk 4 1, and in some style. Good morning, it is a misty and murky start to the day with dense and patchy fog to look out for, some rain, some showers with a little bit of sunshine in the forecast and i will tell you where in 15 minutes. sort of objected will tell you where in 15 minuteslj sort of objected to the idea of showbiz. I hated that. Debbie harry tells breakfast why she never wanted to be a conventional musician. Its thursday, october 24th. Our top story. Police have begun the process of trying to identify the bodies of 39 people found in a refrigerated lorry container in essex paramedics made the discovery shortly before 2am on wednesday sparking one of the uk biggests murder inquiries. Last night police raided two properties believed to be connected to the driver of the truck, whos been arrested on suspicion of murder. Jon kay is in grays this morning where the truck was found. Good morning to you, just bring us up to date. Good morning to you, just bring us uptodate. There is still a heavy Police Presence here this morning, this is where the lorry was discovered in the early hours of yesterday. The vehicle has now been removed by police, taken to tilbury docks are nearby so that the process can begin in as private and dignified away as possible. What police have to do is remove those bodies and try to work out who were those 38 adults and a teenager . Where had they come from . And, crucially, how did they end up in that refrigerated unit on the back ofa that refrigerated unit on the back of a lorry . What we do know is that the container came from belgium across the channel, into essex about midnight yesterday, and that about 1. 5 hours later it was found on this Industrial Estate and those 39 people were pronounced dead by paramedics. There have been a number of developments overnight, as ben ando explains. 0vernight police raids on two homes in Northern Ireland as the investigation into how 39 people came to be found dead in a sealed shipping container in essex gathers pace. Under arrest, the driver of the lorry, named locally as mo robinson. Yesterday evening the vehicle itself was driven away with the bodies of those who perished still inside forfurther the bodies of those who perished still inside for further forensic testing. The priority . Finding out who they were and where they came from. The lorry and trailer will be moved to a secure location in tilbury docks are the body can be recovered whilst preserving the dignity of the victims. We are yet to identify them and must manage this sensitively with their families. I appreciate how much attention this incident will continue to attract and the public and media appetite to understand what has happened. What we know as the container travelled on a cross channel ferry from zeebrugge in belgium to purfleet on the thames estuary. It docked around midnight on tuesday. Early yesterday it was moved to the waterglade Industrial Park nearby. Cctv showed it leaving the board. A short time later the Ambulance Service was called, then the police antibodies were found. Ambulance service was called, then the police antibodies were foundlj am completely and utterly shocked and devastated that has happened. Now the hunt is on for the traffickers who promised the victim isa traffickers who promised the victim is a life in the uk but locked them ina is a life in the uk but locked them in a sealed shipping container and doomed them to a cold, terrible death. Ben ando, bbc news. Due to the nature of what appears to have happened here, this is a complex investigation because it is also an international investigation, starting on the other side of the channel in zeebrugge, belgium, which is where this container had come from. The belgian authorities have said theyve tried to establish how long the container spent in belgium before across the water but at the moment they dont know whether it was a matter of hours or days. They simply dont know. The question is where was it before it was in belgium . The where was it before it was in belgium . The truck where was it before it was in belgium . The truck was registered in bulgaria but we have established overnight that it hadnt actually been to bulgaria itself for about two years. And the bulgarian authorities, the ministry there, has told us it is highly unlikely any of the deceased were bulgarian nationals. Meanwhile, one man remains in Police Custody, being questioned here in essex but no charges have been brought. For the moment, thank you. Theres one week before the uk were supposed to leave the eu. Brussels is still considering what length of extension to offer. But there are signs some arent happy with the Prime Ministers plans to try and force an election if departure is delayed until next year. 0ur Political Correspondent nick eardley is in westminster for us this morning what more can you tell us . We are still waiting for details on whether and how long the eu will grantan whether and how long the eu will grant an extension four. In the meantime, there are concerns about what Boris Johnson meantime, there are concerns about what borisjohnson is going to do next. Thats right. It is a waiting game westminster right now because nobody can make their mind up on the next move until they know whether the eu will say yes you can have a few more weeks to iron out some of theissues few more weeks to iron out some of the issues you might have with the deal or you can have a few more months which would allow Something Like a general election to happen. The assumption had been of brussels comes back and says, 0k, the assumption had been of brussels comes back and says, ok, you can have until the 31st of january, leave brexit until next year, downing street was going to push for a general election, Boris Johnson has made that threat a few times. But there are some signs that might not happen now. For a couple of reasons. Some are worried in the conservative party that having an election before brexit could be a bad idea and actually theyve probably got the numbers if they really make a big push for it to get this deal through the commons even if it takes a bit longer than expected. Likewise, in the labour party, there are some really worried about the prospect of a general election, partly because they dont think their party is doing all that well in the polls and partly because there are some who would rather have another referendum before that election happens. As ever, nothing is particularly straightforward when it comes to figuring out exactly what is going to happen with brexit but i dont think there will be any final decisions until we get that a nswer final decisions until we get that answer from brussels on the length of the extension. That wont come before tomorrow. The Prime Minister is making clear his priorities brexit, he pulled out of this cross party brexit, he pulled out of this cross party committee. Brexit, he pulled out of this crossparty committee. Yes, and it has caused a row overnight. This is the Commons Liaison Committee, the heads of the powerful committees get to interrogate the Prime Minister, the only committee the Prime Minister can be summoned to attend. This is the third time he has said at pretty short notice he isnt going to turn up. The chair of that committee, sarah wollaston, was furious, she said it was a complete discourtesy and wasnt good enough. The conservative say shes got he has got enough on his plate. There isa has got enough on his plate. There is a possibility the eu doesnt offer an extension and this time next week we are looking at no deal brexit, however unlikely that is. So, borisjohnson wont be at that meeting this morning and some are less tha n meeting this morning and some are less than impressed. Thanks very much. Other stories this morning. The metropolitan police is working with facebook to try to stop terrorists Live Streaming their attacks on social media. The force has started recording its Counter Terrorism training exercises on body cams to give facebook a template to recognise what footage from a first person gunman would look like. Its hoped the information will enable facebook to identify videos more quickly, and shut them down. That gives us the opportunity to capture footage from the viewpoint of a shooter. And, by sharing that with facebook, they are going to be able to build algorithms to identify this type of material when its loaded onto the internet very quickly and prevent that shared further. Its emerged that 9000 reports of cyber crime and fraud were left on a Police Database without being investigated because of a Computer Software fault. Another record for lionel messi. Hes become the first player to score in five consecutive seasons in the competition as barcelona beat slavia prague. It was his 113th goal in the Champions League. And english teenagerjosh hill has become the youngest male player to win an official world golf ranking event but couldnt claim his £10,000 prize money because he is still classed as an amateur. But it didnt seem to dull his smile. If he continues to play like that, i think you will have many more trophies and plenty more money coming his way. Unbelievable performance and worth pointing out as well, we should get the england tea m as well, we should get the england team to play new zealand at some point this morning. 9am we are expecting that. Charlie are you going to have a look at the papers . John we are hearing 13 years of england versus new zealand later. And, so, firms calling for a massive shake up of the Business Rates system. They say it is killing the high street given they pay rates they claim are based on outdated methods. And it isnt an even Playing Field because the online retailers dont pay those same rates. Naga who is good at not using satnav . Who uses maps . I am reliant on satnav. When im driving. I can read a regular map. Naga if there is a diversion, you can figure it out . Yes, in my local area. So, to avoid 65 feet of road works, this diversion was 41 miles. Yes. It was a diversion to cover this stretch of the a352 in dorset. It is going to be closed all next week. This is information for anyone in that area, it is close to repair a sewage system. Although it would ta ke a sewage system. Although it would take a few seconds to cover this 65 metres, 65 foot, i should say, it is going to take you a lot longer, 41 miles. Charlie said, this is where they are telling you to go . Naga yes, youve got to go all the way round, just so you know, the daftest diversion it is called. Its got to be a better way. If anyone knows, tell us and we will tell eve ryo ne knows, tell us and we will tell everyone else. Great picture of josh hill, at 15, loads of congratulations coming in from other big players, danny willits, sir nick faldo, he says he wants to be the next tiger woods. It is a transferable skill, shot put and rugby . Rugby must feel very easy after shot put. You dont spin around and around. Shot put is the one like that. I actually won gold at shot put at school. I was the only one that entered. You can only beat who you are up against and it. A beat who you are up against and it. Awin is beat who you are up against and it. Can carol match that . Certainly not. Youve topped everything ive got, as always good morning, everyone. If you havent stepped out, it is a murky start to the day. In fact, some patching mist and fog around, some dense fog, particularly around exeter but for somerset are also heading up towards cumbria, yorkshire, east anglia, watch out for some dense, patchy fog but elsewhere it is murky and for the next few days we are looking at heavy rain, particularly so going through tomorrow and saturday. This morning you can see on the rainfall radar we do have some rain around. Some of this rain will peter out but some of it will also pep up and some of it means we will end up with sunshine and showers. An array of weather fronts crossing us, sunshine and showers. An array of weatherfronts crossing us, there is a squeeze on the isobars in the north so particularly windy but particularly to the west of scotland. As we go through the course of this morning, we continue for a while with the cloud, the drizzle, some showers, some rain at what what is happening in the south east. This band of rain drifting in from the south east really starts to pep up and then it is going to be pushing back to the south east merging with another friend. Behind that, a mixture of sunshine and showers, windy across the west of scotland and temperatures between 12 and 15, may be 16. This evening and overnight, this weather front pushes away to the north sea, we still have some showers following on behind, some of those will be wintry in the tops and hills and mountains in the far north of scotla nd hills and mountains in the far north of scotland and windy here as well and itll be a cold night. Now hes one of 20 former and Current Police and crime commissioners, who have written a letter asking the government to hold an inquiry on the uks assisted dying laws. Breakfasts john maguire went to meet him. Ijust sometimes think im going to wake up and this is going to be a nightmare. Yourejust becoming more and more of a shell of who you were. One of the most shocking aspects of ron hoggs Motor Neurone Disease is just how quickly since his diagnosis injuly its changing his life. Ive gone from being a key partner running a very Successful Police force early this year to a state of almost total dependency now. He is increasingly reliant on his wife, maureen, to help him. I cant wash myself, cant dress myself, i need assistance getting in and out of bed. This is the bit ron cant do. You see, ron cant move this hand. And its like a lead weight. After a career as a police officer, in 2012, he became darrens crime and victims commissioner. And, after a lifetime of upholding and enforcing the law, he now wants to see a change. What i tried to do through my career is make sure people can live their lives in safety and dignity and have a quality of life. And i think those same arguments apply to death. Signed by 19 other police commissioners, hes written a letter to thejustice secretary calling for the law to be reviewed. The current operational side of it policewise isnt working and we are penalising the very, very, very vulnerable individuals and that cant be right. Many oppose changes to the assisted dying laws, citing religious or moral objections and a fear that Vulnerable People may be taken advantage of. I do recognise the counterarguments. I do recognise and respect the views of those who hold a different opinion to me but what im saying is we should allow individuals to have that choice with safeguards. For instance, in my own situation, ive prepared an end of life plan. Maureen is aware of it, my two sons are aware of it, and my sister is aware of it. So they all have copies of that plan, and they know these are my wishes. And they are quite clear because theyre written down already, whilst i can still make those decisions. Do you want to have a look through the wedding album . No. Yes, yes. A happy day. So, this was two years ago. I do wonder, had you known then what you know now, would you have really gone ahead . I tell you what, ron, if i did, i would have gone ahead and id still do today. Ron is determined to keep working and campaigning for as long as he can, for as long as his body will allow. John maguire, bbc news, county durham. Our thanks to ron and maureen for sharing their our thanks to ron and maureen for sharing her with us. Good morning from bbc london. Questions are being raised about the safety of flats built using timber frames. It follows a fire last month at a block in Worcester Park which residents say destroyed the building in minutes. An investigation by bbc london has uncovered alleged faults with fire stopping, that is fire proof material thats meant to stop fire spreading quickly between flats. The developer says all the work was independently signed off. But a fire expert whos looked inside one building has found alleged faults. What we have here is a form of fire stopping which just wont do its job. The fire stopping should be much deeper and it should come out almost to the edge of the cladding on the outside. The gap is far too wide for the material to expand into. In simple terms, there is a large gap, they havent filled it. All that has built is a large chimney through which a fire will spread. No, but liverpool came close, scoring four. And there was a great goalfrom scoring four. And there was a great goal from alex 0xley chamberlain, he scored two, which will show you. From alex 0xlade chamberlain. It was another impressive display from the english clubs in the Champions League. Two brilliant goals from alex 0xlade chamberlain as liverpool beat genk, while chelsea beat last seasons semi finalists ajax. Austin halewood rounds up the action. Its a bit of a blueprint for us. What a big win for Frank Lampard and his team. Well liverpool have condemned a racist banner that was displayed by their travelling fans ahead of that match in belgium. The club say the banner perpetuated a racist stereotype and was completely unacceptable. Lionel messi has broken another record, hes become the first player to score in fifteen consecutive seasons. He did it in barcelonas 2 1 win over slavia prague. Hes scored 113 Champions League goals in total. Very impressive but incredibly hes still behind Cristiano Ronaldo whos got 127. Lovely story from the world of golf, as an english teenager becomes the youngest man to win an official ranking event. This isjosh hill, who beat a decent field to win the al ain 0pen in the united arab emirates. The only problem was that hes still an amateur, so he wasnt allowed to claim the £10,000 prize money. Cant imagine hell stay an amateur for very long. Meanwhile rory mcilroy has confirmed hell play for ireland at next years olympics in tokyo. The four time major winner from Northern Ireland could have been part of team gb, but decided to stick with ireland as hed represented them at youth level. And later this morning well find out englands team to play new zealand in saturdays Rugby World Cup semifinal. As for the all blacks, one players haircut has been making as many headlines as their brand of rugby this is jack goodhue and his impressive mullett. Is it impressive . Good way to the back. Isnt that the key to a good mullet. Its been getting loads of attention. So much so that even the Prime Minister of new Zealand Jacinda ardern has commended him on it. He says hes not getting rid of it, because theres Scientific Evidence that it makes him faster. I dont think its the only mullet on display at this years world cup, ive seen quite a view. There has been a few in the new zealand camp but his is the only one remaining. A couple of the others have locked this off. Does he have highlights . I think he had taken very good care of that mullet. Have you ever had one . Now, i have not. You know what they say. Now, i have not. You know what they hey now, i have not. You know what they say. They say business at the front, party at the back. Is that how it goes . Thats what they say. Do you have photographic evidence of this . You mullet. Cameras did not exist then and noted facebook, sadly. Was a big at the back than that bit . We cannot see has what it was bigger than that, really. Is that a pathetic attempt . That one is very 2019 mullet, not like the originals, thats all im saying. No disrespect. Was that business at the front, party at the back . Thats how it was described. 6 38am is the time. Thank you very much. Carroll will bring is up to date with the weather. Bit of rain around and you will remember perhaps your mum used to say bad weather gives your aches and pains. If youve been claiming for years that bad weather gives you aches and pains it turns out you were probably right all along. New research has found that people with Long Term Health conditions like arthritis are 20 per cent more likely to suffer from pain on days that are humid, windy, or with low pressure. 0ur correspondent Jayne Mccubbin has been catching up with the team behind the science. Three years ago, bbc breakfast launched an ambitious Citizen Science project with the university of manchester to find out if there was a link between whether and pain. Between weather and pain. Was a link between whether and pain. Between weather and pain. We were using a smart app to track this. 13,000 peoplejoined the using a smart app to track this. 13,000 people joined the study. And the results are in. Data from brea kfast viewers the results are in. Data from breakfast viewers has proven there isa link breakfast viewers has proven there is a link between weather and pain, and is a link between weather and pain, a nd exa ctly is a link between weather and pain, and exactly how that link works. This didnt have anything to do with rain. What is it to do with them . We found pain is associated with high humidity and pain can also be higher if there were strong winds and if the pressure is low. Its all about the pressure is low. Its all about the pressure . It is high humidity, strong winds. The old wives tale that will elixir pain is absolutely true. You might be found in association with thousands of participants. Some are more equipped to deal with the cold than others but surprisingly the study showed temperature was not a key factor and it came to pain, pressure was. Wifi humid, damn, windy days are most likely to be painful. Increasing your chance of arthritic pain by 20 . Do you suffer from aches and pains . Yell back from time to time. Can anybody here the weather wasnt going to change because they can feel it in theirjoints . going to change because they can feel it in theirjoints . I normally feel it in theirjoints . I normally feel it in my water. Is whether making it worse . Yes. My mum used to say things like that. She could feel what the day was going to be liked by her bones. You can tell her she is scientifically correct. Well. Well done, mum. What until now has been seen as folklore is now in fact fa ct. Been seen as folklore is now in fact fact. Next up on signs that possibly be weather pain forecast coming to a screen near you. Soon. I guarantee there will be people watching that, as you said a moment ago, i knew allalong. My mum used to say to me, im definitely feeling my bones a bit now that its raining. Im not looking forward to this day today. suffer from asthma and i can feel it coming on from the weather as well if it is cold, damp and wet. It certainly changes my breathing but interestingly the cloudy s, wettest and highest humidity generally you find in the north and west of the uk, its also generally where we have low pressures coming into places like the West Highlands and also snowdonia, lake district, those kind of areas are where, if you suffer from Something Like arthritis, you may find that is genuinely the case that you coming in like my own but, hey, im no doctor so im not sure but places in the south and east of the uk, this is where you have the driest and warmest weather as well and as we know in the summer, it can be fairly humid here but its really interesting to try and get that correlation. Today, if you do suffer from any of these ailments, you may not be pleased to hear that for the next few days there is rain in the forecast. Especially so tomorrow and into saturday with some of that rain being heavy. Tomorrow what weve got is some for good, dense fog across parts of devon, somerset, also through cumbria, east anglia, heading down towards the south as well. Misty, murky conditions to start the day. Some rain as well as you can see on our radar picture, moving across scotland. Showers in Northern Ireland, getting in across wales and parts of the south east but at the moment, none of this is particularly heavy but as we go through the course of the day, this weather frontier will pepped up and weather frontier will pepped up and we will see some heavier rain from it but low pressure is driving our weather with its and raise of weather with its and raise of weather fronts, look at these isobars, they, too, are close together. It will be windy across parts of scotland with strong gusts. This morning, cloudy, mist and fog, drizzle as well and this rain peeping up in the south east but behind this, we are looking at a mixture of rights bills, sunny spells and showers. Temperatures, 1216dc spells and showers. Temperatures, 12 16dc which is roughly where they should be at this stage in october. As we head into the evening and overnight, there goes the rain heading off into the north sea, showers coming in behind. When the ending offer some of those showers being wintry with some snow on the tops of the scottish mountains and hills, and have got this next system coming in from the south west, and thatis coming in from the south west, and that is why with more cloud and rain, in the air coming from a milder direction, these images will not be as low but as we travel further north in clearer skies, colder than a few out there for a touch of frost and once again some patchy mist and fog forming. If you are travelling on friday and saturday, the met office has a yellow weather running out for rain, heavy rain, particularly in wales and north west england, 40 60 millimetres where it falls, 100 millimetres, four inch is quite possible across some of the Higher Ground. Lets take a look at that, first thing in the morning, a lot of this cloud and rain coming in from the south west, this is what we call a waving front which means it is moving, so we think this direction is the direction it will take, may be crossing more Northern Ireland, may be getting further north in central scotland. When it engages with the cold air, we will see snow on the tops of the pennines in the southern uplands. A lot of showers, gales in the north and south, very when the southern parts of wales and also southern england. Temperatures, eight 16, eight in the north and 16 in the south. Thank you. Thunder cracks 0h, oh, what was that . I think its halloween. All those sounds ominous . It is halloween. We are talking about the potential environmental cost of the customs people by. It is nearly halloween but with one week to go environmental groups are warning us to be careful about how much waste decorations and costumes can create. I like the green light and come really suits you. Bens looking into this one. Dressing up, trick or treating and decorating the house with bats, spiders, ghosts and pumpkins. Halloween is more and more popular every year. In fact, we spent nearly 6 more on scary products last year. However, this year campaigners are warning about how much of that stuff contains plastic. A new report reckons seven million costumes are thrown away every year which is about 2,000 tonnes of Plastic Waste. So is there an alternative . Can you have an environmentally friendly halloween . We went to one event where you can without using plastic. I tend to make my own costumes, so i dont tend to buy a lot of the plastic stuff. He is very big on plastic, because it goes to the fish, doesnt it . The waste should not be going to the sea because it can kill sea animals, like seals, polar bears and stuff. Yet nite basically, theres less pollution and you are not getting rid of stuff then buying stuff thats basically for the same thing again and again. The googly eyes, the demon hollins, scales on the back of the dinosaur, you just need a bit of paint, light came on there and you can make whatever your imagination contains. Some very cute pictures there. With me now is sarah divall, creative co 0rdinator at the Environmental Charity hubbub. Good morning. Nice to see you. Youre behind these numbers and youve been looking at some of the Plastic Waste created. Give a sense of the scale of this problem. We did a survey of 19 retailers so the number of places people by their Halloween Costumes, to find out how much plastic is in them because a lot of people have no idea that plastic is inside close and it turns out that 83 of the costumes, 82 of the make up of those costumes is plastic so it is waste and people dont really realise there is plastic inside them at all. We are used to the phrase single use plastic. We associate that with Halloween Costumes but most people will wear them once and throw the mini bean. You four out of ten costu mes mini bean. You four out of ten costu m es a re mini bean. You four out of ten costumes are only ever worn once, people do not know what to do with them afterwards and chuck them in without realising its a plastic so it will never biodegrade and will sit there forever. Some astonishing numbers about how many are thrown away. 7 million housing every single year. People do not know if they can given to charity or think about passing them on to friends that they panic and put them in the bin. When we talk about plastic and costumes, its not just the costumes. Its things like this for the decorations, buckets, all those sorts of things adding to this problem. All the bits that come around. Stuff like this, you can use this again, again, and again. Those are not that big a problem. If youre only going to use at once, think about alternative you will not throw away straight afterwards. What is it about halloween that seems quite disposable . If this was christmas stuff, we would put it in the attic and put it away for a year. Why halloween . People do not wa nt to year. Why halloween . People do not want to wear the same costume every year so you do not want to wheel the same thing to a party next year people chuck it away when what we should be doing is swapping them around so we get a different one every year, around so we get a different one every yea r, we around so we get a different one every year, we can have fun but youre not throwing it in the bin. Alternatives. Some kids there use more natural products. We have some here. You have Something Like this made of string, wool, a pine cone. Should we be talking about this . Yes, stuff like this are super creative. Kids are having much more fun and its not plastic that will end up straight in landfill. There was also loads of things we can do like digging through your dressing up like digging through your dressing up box and making something rather than going to the supermarket and buying it. If you do buy it, do not chuck it in the bin afterwards. That theissue, chuck it in the bin afterwards. That the issue, its about getting it lifelong. The issue is it is important to make plastic safe and thatis important to make plastic safe and that is a consideration, you have to make it safer because kids will be wearing them and using them. You might like with anything, its not a black and white issue. Not all plastic is always bad but in this case where it is being used and thrown away, it has some bad aspects. Health and safety, your normal closure you are at halloween just like the clothes you wear every other day so that is as safe as wearing cotton close any other day, so the most important thing is your kids are safe and i think theres loads of ways you can do that without having to wear a plastic costu me. What would you like retailers to do . What would you like retailers to do . What should they think about . It is high selling and stuff, but plastic is cheap at the end of the day. Yes, look at alternatives that are not plastic, try encourage people to reuse, try something new, bring it into stores and try and recycle the things after use. Why is mike really nice to see you, thank you very much, we will talk more about this im sure. Really interesting as people maybe think about doing that over the weekend. From our. Can you see my goes round here as well . Just the edge . Is it really a coast . Look how cool it is. Shall we give him a name . Lets think about that. We will talk more about that later. More from me after 7am. Will you post a picture of you worrying that a later . 0h, post a picture of you worrying that a later . Oh, no, you started it. The time there were 6 52am. Im excited about this next item. It follows a fire last month at a block in Worcester Park which residents say destroyed the building in minutes. An investigation by bbc london has uncovered alleged faults with fire stopping that is fire proof material thats meant to stop fire spreading quickly between flats. The developer says all the work was signed off independently. It is a misty, murky and damp start to the day with dense patches of fog but some of us will see some sunshine and i will tell you where in 15 minutes. Cloudy with a chance of pain. The research that shows 20 of people are more likely to suffer pain on days that are humid. Its thursday, october 24th. Our top story. Police have begun the process of trying to identify the bodies of 39 people found in a refrigerated lorry container in essex. The discovery was made shortly before 2am on wednesday, sparking one of the uk biggests murder inquiries. Last night police raided two properties believed to be connected to the driver of the truck, whos been arrested on suspicion of murder. Jon kay is in grays this morning where the lorry was found. Bring us right up to date. Good morning. Still a large Police Presence on this Industrial Estate where the lorry was found. The vehicle itself was taken away from here last night, taken to tilbury docks a couple of miles away so the bodies can be removed with as much privacy and dignity as is possible. Police tried to find out what on earth has happened here, who were these 38 adults and a teenager, where had they come from, and why we re where had they come from, and why were they being brought from belgium to the uk . So many questions. What we do know is that refrigerated container they were inside was brought on a ship from zeebrugge in belgium across the channel to essex in the early hours of yesterday morning, picked up by a tractor part ofa morning, picked up by a tractor part of a lorry, the front part of a lorry, and an hour and a half later it was found here a short distance away where paramedics and staff pronounce those 39 people dead. 0ne man, a lorry driver, being questioned by police here in essex. We understand he is from Northern Ireland. There have been developments overnight and ben ando can bring us up to date. 0vernight police raids on two homes in Northern Ireland as the investigation into how 39 people came to be found dead in a sealed shipping container in essex gathers pace. Under arrest, the driver of the lorry, named locally as mo robinson. Yesterday evening the vehicle itself was driven away with the bodies of those who perished still inside forfurther forensic testing. The priority . Finding out who they were and where they came from. The lorry and trailer will be moved to a secure location in tilbury docks so the bodies can be recovered whilst preserving the dignity of the victims. We are yet to identify them and must manage this sensitively with theirfamilies. I appreciate how much attention this incident will continue to attract and the public and media appetite to understand what has happened. What we know is the container travelled on a cross channel ferry from zeebrugge in belgium to purfleet on the thames estuary. It docked around midnight on tuesday. Early yesterday, it was moved to the waterglade Industrial Park nearby. Cctv showed it leaving the board. Cctv showed it leaving the port. A short time later the Ambulance Service was called, then the police and the bodies were found. I am completely and utterly shocked and devastated that has happened. Now the hunt is on for the traffickers who promised the victims a life in the uk but locked them in a sealed shipping container and doomed them to a cold, terrible death. Ben ando, bbc news. Well, if that theory is correct and this turns out to have some kind of links to organised crime, there will be questions about how it can have happened and people around here are deeply shocked by what has gone on. Really upset Something Like this could happen near their homes and businesses but some of them have told us they are not entirely surprised. They come up, they cant speak english, they hand you a phone, you speak to someone on the other end of the home and they ask if they can be taken to an address. It is normally around london. Ive seen six people get out of a lorry in the same location. My best friend has seen people going out of a lorry, scattering in all directions. Everybody has had experience that i know, especially in the area, and it seems funny no one seems to care about it. So, this morning, one man remains in Police Custody in essex, being questioned. Those raids ben was describing a Northern Ireland overnight. This investigation is going to be long and complex and it cove rs going to be long and complex and it covers potentially an entire route, an entire chain of potential incidents. Police in belgium are trying to establish how long that container had been in belgium before it crossed the channel. The authorities have told us it could have been ours, but it could have been days. And it if it was days, where was it before . The truck was registered in bulgaria but the bulgarian authorities have told us they dont believe the deceased were bulgarian nationals. For now, that is it from essex. Thank you, john. Theres just one week before the uk was supposed to leave the eu and brussels is still considering what length of extension to offer. There are concerns over suggestions that the Prime Minister plans to force an election if departure is delayed until next year. 0ur Political Correspondent nick eardley is in westminster for us this morning. What shall we start with . Shall we start with this division in the cabinet, it appears over when and if a general election is going to take place. The big question is how long an extension the eu offers the uk. If it is until next year, until the end of january, the if it is until next year, until the end ofjanuary, the expectation is the Prime Minister will try to force a general election before christmas. That is complicated, though, and it wont be easy to do because there are some conservatives and some in the labour party who dont think it isa the labour party who dont think it is a good idea. Firstly, there are some tories who think that actually probably theyve got the numbers for the deal that was agreed with europe to get it through parliament. So, if you take your time, maybe wait until november, you could eventually get it through and get it done and dusted, then have a general election. 0n the labourfront, there are some really worried they wont do particular well if there is an election before christmas, so they are saying to the leadership that hold on, lets try to focus on another referendum instead of an election. We probably wont find out from brussels how long they will offer that extension until tomorrow, maybe early next week but, after that, we will see some frantic activity around whether or not that election will happen. Just a quick word as well. Home, its gone out of my head what was i going to say . The Commons Liaison Committee. Thank you that was supposed to happen today but borisjohnson has said, no, brexiters my priority. today but borisjohnson has said, no, brexiters my priority. I dont blame you, its been a total politics overload and we have all done it. Basically borisjohnson are supposed to appear before some senior mps today to interrogate him about his plans for brexit and everything else. He pulled out last night which has caused a big row because it is the third time he was supposed to have turned up and not turned up. His argument is i should be concentrating on brexit rather than appearing at this committee. Some are less than impressed. Nick, thank you on both counts, for the information and the help. Thanks very much. Its emerged that 9000 reports of cyber crime and fraud were left on a Police Database without being investigated because of a Computer Software fault. A review by the inspectorate of constabulary found the cases affecting england and wales had been quarantined, because the Computer System assessed that they posed a security risk. Researchers have found people with Long Term Health conditions, such as arthritis, are more likely to suffer pain on days when its humid or windy. Scientists at the university of manchester used a Smartphone App to track the pain experienced by more than 2500 people across the uk, while also mapping the local weather conditions. They found damp and windy days increased the chances of people experiencing pain by about 20 . Theyre one of the Biggest Bands in the world but coldplay have decided to reveal their latest album tracks in the classified adverts of a local paper. The notice for everyday life sat alongside ones for a fridge freezer and bales of hay in north wales daily post. It comes just days after the band announced news of the new album by sending a letter to one of theirfans. Low key, low key, very cool. The time now is 7 10am. Lets go back to our top story now, the discovery of 39 bodies ina story now, the discovery of 39 bodies in a lorry container in essex. The tragedy has raised fresh questions about the routes being used to smuggle people into the uk, and the criminal networks behind the illicit trade. Migrants are trafficked into europe using one of four routes including the so called balkan route where they are smuggled from the black sea through countries like bulgaria. Those looking to move to the uk are generally carried in lorries or containers to the channel ports. The trailer in this case appears to have travelled through zeebrugge in belgium, and then continued by ferry to purfleet, near to where the bodies where found. Police say smaller British Ports like london, away from the intense security of routes through dover, are increasingly attractive to organised crime gangs charging desperate people vast sums. Lets speak now to former metropolitan Police Superintendent bernie gravett, who spent seven years investigating trafficking gangs. We will go into the detail about the potential routes in a minute but i wonder if you could concentrate on the immediate work the police will be doing in trying to identify these bodies and the problems and the difficulties they will be facing right now. We saw yesterday a huge amount of speculation at the outset so guesses being made as to where the truck originated from, the route it came in from and the challenge for the police as this will be a huge and huge investigation. Some of these investigations were three yea rs these investigations were three years long. In this case what we have to identify is clearly the route but this isnt done to make about an irish smuggling gang but isnt, its a worldwide business. We are looking at the container and the truck. Just in terms of those two pieces, the container and the truck, what will they be looking at in terms of what evidence they can find in terms of that trail. Itll be a harrowing scene which i wont go into here but it is primarily going to be forensic evidence. The victims will unlikely have any identification of them so itll be small detail, clothing labels, any physical identification, down to tad tos. We refer to it as a source country victims come from. Itll ta ke country victims come from. Itll take time and itll be difficult. In relation to that, Law Enforcement agencies across europe are engaged so we have belgium looking at the connections, we have operations in Northern Ireland, so, even putting that mosaic together, these victims could come from africa, they could come from vietnam, they could come from albania. Albanians are the highest number of victims identified in the uk and then vietnamese. So youre looking globally. And thatll happen in the couple of days once the forensic work has been done. Many people are interested in what the route was, how these trafficking organisations work. These are people with families and the officers and ambulance staff will be traumatised by this as well. These are people with families who have no idea where these people are. Youre right. Theres two sides to this, there is a humanitarian side where we need to progress the identification as quickly as possible so we can reassure the families. Imagine the hundreds of thousands of families across the globe who know a relative has gone west. There are all watching this. I had calls from america yesterday around this case. We are looking at identification, contacting families and repatriation but, at the same time, parallel to thatis but, at the same time, parallel to that is the Police Investigation which has to be detailed and painstaking. What evidence do to make a container company, yet to the scene where the sea yet but what evidence is there when and where a container is . Is there official documentation to show when and where it started from, possibly was dropped off and picked up again . How close will that trail be revealed . And how do you find out . There is documentation so itll be documentation so itll be documentation when it was loaded onto the ferry and then it appears in this case, again, speculation, the suspect driver just went to in this case, again, speculation, the suspect driverjust went to meet it to pick it up. What about further backin it to pick it up. What about further back in the trail . As we go back, where were they loaded . That will be done clandestinely. The common methodology at the moment is they will be brought to a location in cars, trains, any form of transport, and they will be loaded at a location and moved across. Thats what weve got to go back to. 0bviously, what weve got to go back to. Obviously, we have to look into who owns it. We will be looking at cctv in Foreign Countries and identifiers like that. I imagine because we have 39 victims here, there is going to bea 39 victims here, there is going to be a lot of impetus and resource put into this to find out exactly where they came from and the process in which this tragedy occurred but these statistics are grim when it comes to tracking down and sourcing where people are smuggled in from and the smugglers. We have a National Referral mechanism which is just a guide. Last year, we were short of 7000 potential victims identified in the uk which led to 5000 investigations but that only led to 150 convictions. That is just the tip of the iceberg. These lorries are coming in every week through different routes in every port. Dover has been target hard and so its difficult, the traffickers are looking at other methods to bring people in. European nationals fly in with no checks to people who are trafficked from europe, we have no idea. And the number of potential victims of trafficking coming in the back of lorries . Weve no idea, could be thousands. The picture is there is an organised crime involvement in this. In your experience, other people convicted in courtare experience, other people convicted in court are the ones driving all the ones immediately involved and the ones immediately involved and the bigger players are still behind the scenes, carrying on the business . Definitely. If you look at the case in 2000 when 58 Chinese People were found back in the lorry, dead, only the driver was convicted. There were six prosecutions in holland but the modern slavery act, the crime attracts a life sentence andi the crime attracts a life sentence and i would hope to see police bring it, if they identify people from Foreign Countries involved in this, they bring them to the uk for prosecution but that isnt generally done. Its good to have your expertise on this, bernie. Hes been closely involved in Human Trafficking in the past, and he is a former police officer. It is coming up to 7 18am, carol, good morning 0rton is here, is that more mist . We have mist, fog, dense fog across South West England but also across north west england, parts of yorkshire, heading down towards the midland and east anglia so if youre travelling take it easy. Today there is rain in the forecast but we start to see heavy rain through tomorrow, tomorrow night and into friday. Some of that will deposit snow on the high ground in the pennines. This morning, rain and showers, some of the merging giving longer spells of rain and this is what has happened in the last 15 minutes or so. As we carry on through the day, we see more rain sweeping up from the south. Courtesy of this weather front here. So, he rain turns heavier in the south east but low pressure dominates our weather once again and you can tell by the isobars which are close together that itll be pretty windy in the west of scotland, especially with exposure. We have these showers merging across scotland and Northern Ireland, the rain popping up across the Channel Islands and the south eastern quarter of england, which will eventually push towards the near continent, clearing through this evening and, behind that band of rain, we are back in the busy cocktail of bright spells, sunny spells and some showers. Temperatures today 12 16. Heading through the evening, you can see how the rain clears away an overnight we have some showers dotted around, still blustery in the north, and some of those showers will be falling out snow on the tops of hills and mountains. This next area is coming into the south west and you can see it as a maintaining temperatures in the south western corner with the cloud at north of that itll be a cold night, colder than the one just gone with patchy mist and fog forming once again and pockets of frost. Picking up what is happening in the south west through tomorrow, we will see some heavy rain coming ourway, tomorrow, we will see some heavy rain coming our way, notjust friday night and saturday. The met office has a yellow warning out for this, especially for wales and north west england with the risk of flooding, a lot of surface water and spray on the road so could be quite nasty if you are travelling, so bear in mind. Its because we have a weather front coming in, a waving front, which means it is moving. We think this is what the rain is going to do at the moment. But because this front is waving, it might wave across Northern Ireland, and further north across scotland, said the rain distribution will be different. We are looking at snow across the tops of the pennines and the plans. Itll be cold and windy north of that and stronger wind across southern parts of england and south wales, so its all once again going on with the Weather Forecast. Thanks very much 7 21am. Ron hogg was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease this year and the devastating illness has left him in a state of complete dependency in just a matter of months. Now, he wants the right to end his life. Hes one of 20 former and Current Police and crime commissioners, who have written a letter asking the government to hold an inquiry on the uks assisted dying laws. After a career as a police officer, in 2012, he became durhams crime and victims commissioner. Sorry. Just. John maguire, bbc news, county durham. We should say thank you to ron and maureen for sharing this story. It is really moving when rowan asks his wife would she still go ahead, knowing what she knows now . When ron asks his wife. We asked for a statement on this story, and a ministry ofjustice spokesperson told us it was a matter of individual conscience, and any change in the law was for Parliament Rather than government to decide. He said he is touching on a lot of issues and this is where you get thoughts among many of us are watching this morning. This gentleman has a living will and they do not resuscitate direct of the when his time comes you want to be in control, does not want to find himself a new position where he is right on other people for the most intimate of actions. We had when they are saying its not being cleaned and getting up, getting dressed. This gentleman said nobody should be made to ensure such a loss of dignity so it is getting many of you thinking this morning. 7 45am. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. If yourejust stepping out, worth mentioning the patchy fog we have this morning. Parts of South West England, the midlands, north west england, around yorkshire, east anglia as well, so do take it easy. Also rain in the forecast today but heavier rain coming our way tomorrow, tomorrow night and also into saturday, so something to watch out for if youre travelling. Todays rain will pick up. Coming from the Channel Islands and pushing into the eastern corner behind sunshine and showers. Low pressure driving whether across scotland, particularly with exposure in the west. It is a cloudy, dry day. Some drizzle, some showers and rain coming up from the channel across the south eastern quarter and pushing south eastward across the south eastern quarter and pushing south eastwa rd through across the south eastern quarter and pushing south eastward through the day. Blinded, brighter skies, pushing south eastward through the day. Blinded, brighterskies, sunny spells and some showers but dont forget windy in scotland, especially with exposure and 16 celsius in the south. We say goodbye to the rain away from the east coast of england and from many of us drive with clear spells, a few showers, some of which wintry across the north of scotland, then we will look at the arrival of our next system. Arrival. It will not be as called a night in the south west and the Channel Islands, but is northwards and it will be a cold night, cold enough for a touch of frost here and there annual season patchy method for forming. Back to the south west. Heavy rain moving north eastwards, through friday, friday night and saturday, especially affecting wales and england. 40 millimetres, locally with height that is four inches so hardly surprising there is the risk of some flooding. A lot of surface water and spray on the roads, and the met office has a yellow weather warning out to this effect. Whats happening as we start off on a drying out but the cloud and rain spreading from the south west, moving across wales, midlands, parts of southern england and this is a waving fund which means that shoot pain changes position and way further north across scotland and ireland but this is what we currently think. As it engages with the cold air, travelling further north, some sleet and snow on the tops of the pennines and potentially, too, the southern uplands. When the any all, when the in the south. Southern england and south wales. Cool in the north, too, with eight as our top temperatures 16 further south. Low pressure still in charge. A cooler direction for us and High Pressure takes over. On saturday, rain moving south across england and wales, behind it some sunshine and a plethora of showers, when the any north once again and still looking at that wind coming in from the north and north west which, asi from the north and north west which, as i mentioned, is a cool direction. Looking at seven or eight in the north but milder air further south. As we head into the weekend, High Pressure star to exert its influence. Things are more settled, you see dry conditions, more sunshine and temperatures are on the side at 10 12dc, saying goodbye to the sixteens and 17 to be seen as of late. Thunder are you bringing the funder, carol . The moody lighting, ominous sound effects and these bats we have let loose in the studio can mean just one thing. It is nearly halloween but with one week to go environmental groups are warning us to be careful about how much waste decorations and costumes can create. Bens looking into this. What is the tingly music . Im relu cta ntly what is the tingly music . Im reluctantly regretting the story. Im nota reluctantly regretting the story. Dressing up, trick or treating and decorating the house with bats, spiders, ghosts and pumpkins. Halloween is becoming more and more popular every year. But it comes at a cost to the environment. Thats because most costumes and decorations are made of plastic. And lots of it is only used once. Sojust how big a problem is it . Last year, we spent £660 million on halloween. The most popular things to buy . Sweets, pumpkins, fancy dress costumes, decorations and cosmetics. According to the Research Firm kantar, 52 of families spent money on halloween last year. Sales were up by nearly 6 on the previous year. 33 million of us dress up for parties and to go trick or treating. But, according to environmental groups, seven million outfits a year are chucked in the bin after theyve been worn. Lots of them contain plastic so throwing out costumes contributes to 2000 tonnes of waste thats the same as 83m plastic bottles. A little earlier i asked one Campaign Group why halloween tends to be more throwaway than christmas where traditionally, wed save the stuff to use year after year. We should be swapping those costumes around so we can get another one every year, so we are not throwing it away. Who is to blame . The retailers say that they are making efforts to make their costumes and products more sustainable. They say costumes can and should be used more than once. They also say they need to have more plastic to meet fire regulations so they dont burn as easily. But what about if you want to ditch the bought products and make something yourself this year . We went to a halloween craft event in lancashire to get some top tips. I tend to make my own costumes. I dont tend to buy a lot of the plastic stuff. He is very big oil and plastic and what it does to the fish, isnt he . The waste should not go to the sea, because it could kill sea animals like seals, polar bears and staff. Basically, there is less pollution and you are not getting rid of stuff and never buying stuff thats basically for the same thing again and again. Googly eyes, and even horns, scales on the back of a dinosaur, you just need to whack them on there with a bit of paint, you can make whatever your imagination can turn you into. Some great stuff there and thank you to them for showing us. Youre talking about pumpkins, to feel that if you get a about pumpkins, to feel that if you geta pumpkin about pumpkins, to feel that if you get a pumpkin coup carve, use 18,000 tonnes of the stuff, 8 million pumpkins and 6 of those are just thrown out. The university of manchester has done the research. Theyve looked into this. They asked people about their conditions and compared it with the weather conditions where they were on that day to find out how much worse it was. Charlotte has been in touch. My also arthritic knee, she says, is a human barometer, i know in the is about to change as my knees that aching, almost in advance of the weather. Lots of low cloud and dont be fooled by the dry start. There will be plenty of rain a bit later through the day but to begin with, yes, dry, dull, not too chilly. We will start to see outbreaks of rain get going through the late morning and then that rain threatens to turn heavier and a bit more organised into the afternoon but it will clear its way eastward and it should be dry again by the time we get to the end of the day. Top temperatures between 12 14dc. Through this evening and overnight, lots of clear skies around, maybe one or two showers but mostly dry. The breeze will pick up and it will feel cooler than it was last night temperatures dropping back into single figures. Tomorrow will be a windy day with gusts of up to 40 45 mph but feeling a lot milder, 16 17dc perhaps but windy, mild, there will be some outbreaks of rain around at times, heavier rain on saturday, cooler and brighter on sunday. Ill be back in around half an hour. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt. 0ur headlines today Police Investigating the discovery of 39 bodies in the back of a refrigerated lorry in essex have searched two addresses in Northern Ireland. Ijust sort of hated that. Debbie harry tells breakfast why she never wanted to be a conventional musician. Its thursday, october the 24th. Our top story. Police have begun the process of trying to identify the bodies of 39 people found in a refrigerated lorry container in essex. The discovery, just before 2am on wednesday, has sparked one of the uk biggests murder inquiries. Detectives say the container was transported from zeebrugge in belgium, and docked at purfleet in essex. It was then moved to the nearby waterglade Industrial Park. Cctv captured the lorry arriving at the park at speed shortly after 1 10 on wednesday morning, close to where it was found. When paramedics alerted police about half an hour later, all 39 people were pronounced dead. The trailer is believed to be refrigerated with temperatures as low as minus 35. The lorry driver has been named in Northern Ireland as 25 year old mo robinson. He was arrested on suspicion of murder, and last night police raided two properties believed to be connected to him. Lets go live now to grays where the lorry was found. Jon kay is there for us. Good morning. Good morning. The road here, this side road on a quiet Industrial Estate, that is where the lorry was found on this morning, 24 hours on, police remain here in large numbers and we havejust hours on, police remain here in large numbers and we have just seen more members of the investigation tea m more members of the Investigation Team going in there carrying out theirforensic search team going in there carrying out their forensic search and photographic as part of what has been described to us as a long and complex investigation. So, yes, its clearly difficult and grim for everybody involved. The truck itself in the refrigerated unit were taken away from here last night and have been taken to tilbury docks nearby so that the 39 bodies could be removed in as dignified and private a way as possible. The police have told us that that is going to take some time, notjust working out who the 39 people were, but where they came from. How long they were in that refrigerated unit and how long the unit might have been in belgium before it was brought across the channel to the uk in the early hours of yesterday morning. Joining me now from the Road Haulage Association is richard, and let mejust ask, when you heard yesterday that this lorry had been found with 39 lives lost, what was your Immediate Reaction . Devastation, to be honest. The gravity of the situation is really sinking in this morning as things start to unfold in terms of what happened here but also devastated as an industry and devastated this could happen in this day and age to 39 people. The thing that strikes me arriving here this morning and seeing the area last night, there is the port at purfleet where the container came in but there are lots of Industrial Estates and lorry parks and this is a busy part of the country for haulage. Absolutely, this is a thriving area for haulage and people will be shocked and surprised that Something Like this could happen in this kind of area, this trailer that was brought across from zeebrugge the day before yesterday was unaccompanied on the driver picked it up and was obviously en route but there are lots of Unanswered Questions for me in terms of what was happening. Was there a load on this trailer . Was there a load on this trailer . Was the fridge running . Was it operating . We still havent heard who found the migrants on board and whether he alerted the police to this situation. Theres lots of clarity we simply havent got. Weve heard about incidents in bigger, more scrutinised ports, dover and calais, but as those have been tightened up and camps closed on the other side of the channel, has that shifted the issue of migrants to smaller may be less scrutinised ports like purfleet . I think will most definitely. If you look at calais and cocktails, they are pretty robust. The c0 two monitors, the sniffer dogs, the scanners, that pushes the problem further out to more remote ports and if we dont have the infrastructure there and check the vehicles then traffickers will definitely use those routes to get migrants into the uk. Richard, thank you very much indeed. The possibility of trafficking is one thing the police are looking into. There is a man, a Northern Ireland driver named moe robinson who is in custody being accused of murder. And further afield, in bulgaria where the vehicle was registered, in so many places, people saying and stressing in one voice that this is going to be a complex and lengthy investigation. Thank you very much. Good morning, nick. A couple of things to pick up on. The idea of if and when the general election might be dependent on other issues, of course, and some divisions in the cabinet, apparently. Yes, good morning, charlie. There is a bit of a waiting game going on at westminster now to see what sort of extension, if any, westminster now to see what sort of extension, ifany, brussels westminster now to see what sort of extension, if any, brussels offer the brexit process. The expectation is that if they say they can have until the end of january next year to sort things out, the Prime Minister will push for a general election. Not completely clear that that will work because there are some who are less than convinced it needs to happen. There are some of the party think they just need needs to happen. There are some of the party think theyjust need to get on with it and get the deal through parliament, even if it takes us through parliament, even if it takes us beyond the 31st of october and passed the brexit deadline. Likewise, some in the labour party say, lets see if we can figure something out and give a bit more time for scrutiny of the legislation and see if that works, although labour officially say they would support a general election but there are some in the labour party who say they are not sure they are ready for a general election and they would rather have another referendum, so its not totally clear that if the pm tries to force the general election that it will happen and a lot will depend on what brussels comes back with in terms of an extension, probably tomorrow. So what might be useful is if mps had the chance to question the Prime Minister today, for example, and there was a plan to do that, wasnt there . But its not going to happen . He was meant to be at the Commons Liaison Committee where he would be grilled on everything from brexit to domestic policy but he pulled out last night quite late in the day, late in the evening before we knew he was not going to turn up. Some are he was not going to turn up. Some a re really he was not going to turn up. Some are really angry about that because its the third time that the pm is supposed to have been at the committee and he said he could not quite fit it in. His argument is, i am focusing on brexit, ive got lots on my plate and let me get it out of the way and i will come and speak to the way and i will come and speak to the committee. Some are less than impressed that the notice came so late last night. We will leave it there for now. Thank you very much. It is nearly halloween, a week to 90, it is nearly halloween, a week to go, and environmental groups are warning us to be careful that how much waste that all those creations and cost rooms create. Yes, a bit of and cost rooms create. Yes, a bit of a halloween horror and this is the weekend most people will properly head out and think about buying some stuff to trim out the house and if theyre going out trick or treating in that sort of thing and its worth a lot of money, £660 million is spent on this stuff and 52 of families say they will dress up or decorate the house as a result. But the environmental cost is huge, 7 million of those outfits, talking about stuff like that, and 7 million of them thrown away after being worn once and most of them contain plastic and polyester and that creates about 2000 tonnes of Plastic Waste, and to give you a sense of that 83 million plastic bottles. It isa that 83 million plastic bottles. It is a lot of waste and it tends to be because we use these things just once and what the industry is saying is they are trying to work out a way of this stuff being more sustainable and maybe we should think about reusing it a year later and the way we do with christmas decorations. We tend to store them in the loft and use them again the year after but less so for things like halloween and its worth mentioning as well as the plastic, pumpkins, 18,000 tonnes of pumpkins, 8 million will be used and they get thrown away without being eaten. We spoke about that the other day. Thats why we were talking about pumpkin recipes. And the risotto you said you make. And soup, that is easy. We should do a recipe guide. 20 million quid is we spend on pumpkins averagely costing £1 72. Spend on pumpkins averagely costing £172. Have you carve a pumpkin before . No. Did you do it well . No. Ina word. The weather with carroll coming up on the sport as well withjohn. Lets return to our top story now on the horrific discovery of 39 bodies in the back of a lorry. One man who can give us an insight into the terrifying journey of a migrant in transit is ahmad al rashid. Ahmad travelled from syria to the uk in 2015. After 55 days, he made it to britain hiding in the back of a lorry. Hejoins us now. Before we talk about this latest discovery, just so people understand, your own journey, some pa rt understand, your own journey, some part of that you were in a container not dissimilar to the situation were looking at now. Tell us a bit about that. Good morning. The journey started further afield when i had to cross the Syrian Border into turkey and eventually i ended up into turkey and eventually i ended up in calais which was one of the most horrendous places i have ever been to, lots of criminal activity, human smugglers and traffickers. For several days i was put in the back of different cars, lorries and one time the smuggler put me in the back of this lorry and he said it would be two hours and you will be in london and he walked away unlocked the door. It was freezing cold inside and after two hours the lorry did not move and we just started to think, what is going to happen . It was a moment of shock and horror and then we started to knock and knock and the driver came in letters out and he ran away. How many work with you . At that time it was seven. 0ne many work with you . At that time it was seven. One child as well. I think seven or eight years old, and i think he was afghanistan. In the process of you getting into that container, who did you contact . There is a lot of speculation, and we cannot say what happened with this journey here, but the driver, you said, let you out, so what kind of role did the driver having it . A main role . At that time in calais, that was 2015, so there was the driver and the French Police and they came and the driver was shocked, so he called the police and the police came. Because he did not know you are in there. He was shocked and he contacted the police and they caught us all and they asked where we were from and i said i was from syria and he said to go and try again. The police told you to try again . Yes, because at that time it was still horrendous. In this latest discovery there are many, this latest discovery there are any this latest discovery there are many, many victims, but you were describing, a moment ago the decision you took which might not be dissimilar from decision you took which might not be dissimilarfrom the decision you took which might not be dissimilar from the decision they took at some point during their journey to get into a truck and have the doors locked behind you entirely trusting that a criminal gang is going to let you out. And that is quite hard for people to understand, to do that at all. Have people for a minute, if they start to picture it, asa minute, if they start to picture it, as a father or mother, as a human being, you are living under bombing and shelling and this is 2013, 2014, 2015, and its bombs, shells, isis and radical groups attacking you, the necessity for me to fully as a syrian kurd, which is still relevant at this moment, there is no other means for me to escape, because there were no illegal pathways or any legal pathways for me to apply for a visa. I did English Teaching in aleppo and language and literature study in the uk, but when all the legal ways for me to make it safely, with dignity are shut and you are in a very desperate situation, then you rely on these criminal gangs. Do you see any letup in the number of people willing to put themselves what you put yourself through, even when you see reports like this of an horrendous tragedy of 39 people dead . like this of an horrendous tragedy of 39 people dead . I think it is absolutely shocking. Its very difficult for me to be saying to someone in manchester but if you are a person in a situation where there is bombing and rape and sexual violence, you are very desperate to flee and get to a place of safety, not only for you but also for your children and i think people would do this. For me, personally, when i think about what happened to me at that time, i think i should have never done that. You are just walking to your death because i saw death with my own eyes. It is very difficult, because i closed my eyes andi difficult, because i closed my eyes and i started to think about my wife and i started to think about my wife and child who were stuck and i had one moment to spend with them before idied in one moment to spend with them before i died in the back of the lorry, so people dont make these decisions out of nothing. How are you now . I am all right. Ive been four and a half years in the uk and im learning the language, i complain a lot about the weather. And im working. How are your family . They are doing great and my wife is here and my daughter goes to school, she is more british now, but we cannot complain. We are very lucky and fortu nate complain. We are very lucky and fortunate because i am alive and i was able to get here and many of them could not. Its very obvious that the emotions are still raw as you think back to what could have been your fate in those circumstances and when you think about the people who have done this, on this occasion, someone has decidedly decided to actively lock someone in and leave them. When you think about people who do that, how do you reconcile that . You cant. Its a criminal activity. Knowing you are putting these people in the back of this lorry, there is no air. They will be suffocating to death. For many of these people it isa criminal death. For many of these people it is a criminal activity. They do not see them as human beings, they see them as money, just objects, nothing more, nothing less. And the flip side is that they are the only ones who are offering any line of hope. This is the tragic side. The legal pathways for people to cross, and i know there are counter arguments and i recognise that, but making sure there is a legal route for people to make these journeys, but also to criminalise these activities and try to crack down on these criminal activities is vital. Ahmad, thank you for sharing your stories with us this morning. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. Weve had lots of e mails today and i think it was this one i wanted to pick out. And in cleethorpes, and we we re pick out. And in cleethorpes, and we were talking about pain being related to whether and how it can get worse in bad weather and i have to say this to you, she finds her bones are a better Weather Forecaster than any of your presenters, sorry, carol. My hips and knees ache long before the rain sta rts and knees ache long before the rain starts falling from the sky. I think ithink and i think and should have a bash at presenting the weather. It would be very cool. It ill start for us today, milder than yesterday and we also have patchy fog around across parts of South West England and in through the midlands heading up into Northern England, south east england and east anglia but it is patchy and not all of us have it and there is rain in the forecast today but tomorrow and tomorrow night and the next day means we are looking at heavy rain for some parts of the uk. This weather frontier will pep up through the course of this morning and bring heavier rain across Central Eastern england, pulling away to the near continent and low pressure in the north still dragging in showers and windy conditions across scotland, especially so with exposure in the far west. This morning we have all of that fog lifting and some will lift into low cloud and summer break and we will see brighter skies develop. We can see brighter skies develop. We can see the rain pushing down towards the south eastern corner and behind it isa the south eastern corner and behind it is a mixture of bright spells, sunshine and showers. Temperatures between 11 in the north to 16 in the south. Through this evening, we say goodbye to the rain and in clear skies it will be a cold night with wintry showers in the north and then we start to see all of this cloud piling in from the south west. Temperature wise, because of the cloud and rain on the way you can see there are nines and tens and twelves. Moving north under the clear skies, this is where we are likely to see a touch of frost and also patchy mist and fog forming again. If you are travelling, due to the heavy rain, especially across wales and north west england, there is the risk of flooding and there will be a lot of surface water and spray on the roads. The met office has a yellow weather warning for this and we are looking at about between 40 or 60 millimetres of rainfall, but on the Higher Ground it could be as much as 100 millimetres, which is four inches. We start on a dry note but we have the rain coming in from the south west, coming on courtesy of a weather front, a moving south west, coming on courtesy of a weatherfront, a moving front south west, coming on courtesy of a weather front, a moving front which means the and it could go more across Northern Ireland orfurther north across central scotland. It could even be a little bit further south, so keep an eye on this if you have outdoor plans and as you engage with the colder air in the north, you could see sleet and snow and potentially in the southern uplands. Windy in the north of the country and as we come further south, windy across wales and england but still in the milderairand across wales and england but still in the milder air and from friday into saturday the weather front continues to trundle down to the near continent leaving a lot of isobars across the north of the country but the wind changes direction and its going to blow in a lot of showers and further south we have the rain continuing to push down to the far south and in between, something dry and bright, but we could see the cool air coming in behind that weather front. But we could see the cool air coming in behind that weatherfront. High pressure takes over for sunday and also the early part of next week, so temperatures will be lower, but the weather will be drier and we will also see a bit more in the way of sunshine, which after all the rain, will probably be a blessing relief. We will stay with the weather theme. If youve been claiming for years that bad weather gives you aches and pains, it turns out you were probably right all along. New research has found that people with Long Term Health conditions like arthritis are 20 more likely to suffer from pain on days that are humid, windy, or with low pressure. Shall we go to the vt all the guests . Well go to the guest. Joining us now is will dixon, the lead researcher, and carolyn gamble, who has arthritis and participated in the study. I will start with you and the reason you are a participant in the study is that your bones do something rather remarkable. I have a condition which makes my bones fused together and they used to call it bamboo spine to give you an example of what it might look like. So my bodyis of what it might look like. So my body is trying to. Bamboo spine . The vertebrae is fused together and stick in one solid piece, but with medication we manage it differently. So how does the weather then affect you, or how is your condition affected by the weather . Ive been a believer that it does impact on my condition, so hot and humid, that has made a flare up, dry was always better for has made a flare up, dry was always betterfor me has made a flare up, dry was always better for me and this study sort of confirm that hot and humid or cold and damp is bad for a lot of different pain conditions, and mine as well. So you see and feel a tangible difference according to the weather . Absolutely. If ive been away on holiday i can relax, but being ina away on holiday i can relax, but being in a nice environment has really helped so when you go to spain for really helped so when you go to spainfora really helped so when you go to spain for a few weeks, the pain is less. I do wonder that sometimes when you look out on a cloudy, grey day and you have a condition, a diagnosed condition, but if that mood affects you. Absolutely. I agree with you on that as well. I think theres a lot of contributing factors. Its so interesting and theres lots of people who have got in touch with us today because its one of those things where people think, its damp today and i feel like this, so what is the science. What have you discovered . like this, so what is the science. What have you discovered . I am a rheumatologist so i see patients with arthritis every week and its so common that patients will come and explain that the weather has affected their pain but people describe Different Things in the weather is affecting their pain, so weather is affecting their pain, so we will try to work out what the relationship was an three years ago we launched a study called cloudy with a chance of pain and here on bbc breakfast after the show we have thousands of people signing up to ta ke thousands of people signing up to take part and they downloaded the Smartphone App and then they track their symptoms and we use the gps in their symptoms and we use the gps in the smartphones to link it to the local weather. So there are some things you sort of knew that probably the weather affected, but are there things you discover that you possibly did not realise there was a link between . All of the weather ingredients are related, so when there is low pressure it is more likely to be rainy and therefore we try to disentangle what it was within the weather related to the pain, and we found that high humidity had the strongest link to pain and also if there were stronger winds and low pressure. High humidity, but low pressure . Yes. Pressure i think was one of the things we thought might be related at the beginning because of peoples belief that they can forecast the weather based on theirjoints and the pressure in the weather. So quite a few people getting in touch with us today on a theme, that they can sense the weather changing, their body is reacting to the weather even before the weather has changed. How does the science answer that one . Because weve seen relationships with a low pressure, low pressure will often precede Something Like rain coming, so people might have a link between the pressure and their symptoms and the low pressure is preceding another weather format to come. Charlie asked about what kind of conditions are affected and it seems obviously in your case, bone related, but some got in touch saying they were diabetic and the weather affects their diabetes, the way that their insulin is consumed or absorbed in the body and levels as well. Does that surprise you because i know you normally deal with bones. We looked at product chronic pain conditions and we cannot answer about diabetes from our study. What you do with the information . Once you do with the information . Once you have it confirmed, and you knew it in your bones, as it were, what do you do . Move somewhere where the weather conditions are better . That would be amazing, but i live in manchester and its unlikely that i dont go out on rainy and cold days andi dont go out on rainy and cold days and i work full time, so i might change how i do my day to day stuff and might take a taxi instead of public transport rather than waiting outside for ages. I public transport rather than waiting outside forages. I might public transport rather than waiting outside for ages. I might tweak my day to day activity is how i might use it and sometimes we wonder why we feel this way, so knowing its the weather, that is out of our control, so sometimes we are just going to be in pain. Its good to have an answer at least. It brings some peace. Thank you so much. Glad we could help with the research. Maybe you can move to diabetes in a few years. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning. It is a misty and murky start to the day with patches of fog and rain and drizzle in North Western areas but it will move eastwards and pepped up with heavier rain later across eastern areas. Meanwhile further west there will be some sunny spells and showers moving in and some gales in the west of scotland, with maximum temperatures getting to 12 or 14 degrees. That rain in the east will move away overnight and showers will move in with wintry showers over Higher Grounds in scotland. Turning quite chilly in Northern Areas tonight with a touch of frost were many parts. Further south not quite as cold with temperatures paying up to nine or 10 degrees. Milder air moving in across southern areas and with that, heavy rain spreading in on friday, especially across wales, Northern England and the midlands, lasting until saturday. There could well be some problems so well worth staying tuned to the forecast. Hello. This is worklife from bbc news with Sally Bundock and james menendez.
