Flood warnings are issued across the uk, with some regions expected to see two weeks worth of rain in less than an hour. A new Study Concludes theres little evidence that eating red meat, sausages and bacon increases the risk of cancer. And well take a look at the opera house thats been shortlisted for britains best new building of 2019. Its five oclock. Our main story. The Prime Minister has said there will need to be some customs checks on the island of ireland after the uk leaves the eu. In an interview with our Political Editor laura kussenberg, borisjohnson also said he believed that the eu could be won round by new plans for the border which he said were very constructive and far reaching proposals and are due to be released in the coming days. Lets head to the conservative conference in manchester and our chief Political Correspondent vicki young. We are in the slightly bizarre position of talking about some proposals that nobody has seen. The uk put in what are called anon papers, not an official position, but some ideas. They were put into brussels but we are expecting, maybe as soon as tomorrow or the next day, more detailed proposals, technical detail as well, to go in. I think they were waiting until the end of they were waiting until the end of the conservative Party Conference because they could be controversial things in there but borisjohnson confirming there would have to be some checks somewhere on the island of ireland. He rebutted suggestions that there were going to be a string of border posts either side of the border, he said those leaks which seem to have gone to the irish press we re seem to have gone to the irish press were not true but the problem is until he tells us the actual details, it is going to be difficult to analyse exactly what the uk government is proposing, have far reaching changes are going to be or, as is the suspicion of some conservative mps, it is going to look very similar to some of the proposals theresa may put to the house of commons, the ones that got rejected on a number of occasions. Borisjohnson has rejected on a number of occasions. Boris johnson has been rejected on a number of occasions. Borisjohnson has been speaking to our Political Editor. Prime minister, in the last few weeks you have lost major votes in the commons, you have chucked some mps out of your own party. The highest court in the land has found you have broken the law and given the wrong advice to the queen. How do you think this is going . Well, i think it is going about as well as could be expected, if not slightly better. Really . Yeah, because, look, this was always going to be a very difficult time. And i am tasked with getting it over the line, getting brexit done by october the 31st and i think we always knew that as we came up to that deadline things would get choppy. So, you are blaming all of your woes on people who are trying to stop brexit . No, i think it isjust the predicament. It is just the situation we are in as a country and if only we could all come together, get brexit over the line, i think that fevers would cool, temperatures would come down and it would be a great thing. Under the proposals that you are about to take to brussels, there would be extra checks on the island of ireland. How and where . If the eu is going to insist on customs checks as we come out, as it is, then we will have to accept that reality and there will have to be a system for customs checks away from the border. Now, we think those checks can be absolutely minimal and non intrusive and wont involve new infrastructure, but that is absolutely, laura, that is where the argument is going to be and that is where the negotiation will be tough. But to be really clear about that, it wouldnt be the eu insisting on checks happening somewhere. If we are in two different economic systems, of course there would have to be checks and that seems to be the idea of that, is toxic to a lot of people. So, isnt this just you putting forward similar proposals that would have been suggested and turned on so many times before . Well, lets see where we get to. And as you know, we have made some very constructive and far reaching proposals. If there isnt a deal, whose fault will it be . Well, you know, i dont want to get into a blame game but i think the uk has really moved a long, long way. You really believe that what you are about to put on the table could win the eu around, you really believe that . I do, yes. I absolutely do, yes. I urge you, laura, to keep hope alive and not to. Prime minister, this is not about people feeling hopeful, this is about whether or not the government can come up with a deal with the European Union to protect the economy, to protect peoples jobs and livelihoods. This is not about telling people to cheer up. No. This couldnt be more serious. I know, but its also a question of getting brexit done by october the 31st, and doing it in a way that protects the unity and integrity of the united kingdom, and we are entitled to protect our Customs Union and we are entitled to exit as a sovereign state. And we can do it in such a way as to preserve, as i said, all those benefits that ireland has, so with Great Respect to all those who are currently anxious about it, especially in ireland, we do think that our proposals are good and creative, but i accept also that there may be hard yards ahead. Yesterday, you denied you touched a woman inappropriately at a lunch. She said you did. Is she lying . Look, i dont want to minimise the importance of this issue or peoples concerns about this kind of thing. But in this case, it is simply not true. So, she is lying . Look, im not going to go into whatever, when people make these kinds of evaluations, it should always be taken very, very seriously but in this case, it is not true. Do you remember the event in question . There is not much more i can say. Do you remember the event . That is not much more i can say. Its not true. Some people would think, in this kind of situation, there should be some kind of investigation, questions should be asked. Should people try to find out what happened because we have completely a he says, she says situation. I can tell you it is not true and what i want to do is get on with delivering on what i think is, i must say, important issue of our domestic agenda. But do you worry about what female voters think of you . Yes, of course, of course. I think these are important issues but i really cant give you any more on that subject than i have already said. Just finally, is the job harder than you thought it would be . It is a wonderfuljob. Is it harder than you thought it might be . Look, i dont want to sound. It is a wonderfuljob, yes, it is a hard job but i think that every day we are making progress. The Prime Minister speaking there. Tomorrow at the final day of this conference, we will see the Prime Minister take to the stage to make his speech and it is likely to coincide with Prime Ministers questions back in the house of commons which he will not be attending. All eyes will be on parliament in case there is some kind of statement later this week laying out those details on brexit proposals. The other issue that has been bubbling along is the news that Geoffrey Clifton brown, a senior conservative mp has been told to leave and go home from the conference after an altercation with a member of staff. He was apparently trying to get a friend into the international lounge, didnt have the right pass, and was stopped by the right pass, and was stopped by the security people, and he didnt seem to like that at all. So a conservative spokesman said the incident was unacceptable, he was asked to leave the conference and they are establishing all the facts to see if further action is necessary. They said we will always adopt a zero tolerance approach to any inappropriate behaviour towards our hard working any inappropriate behaviour towards our ha rd working staff. Any inappropriate behaviour towards our hard working staff. That happened just moments before priti patel got her feet talk about the tories being the party of law and order. Thank you very much. With the governments latest brexit proposals due to be released very soon, anticipation over what could be in them regarding the issue of the irish border has dominated proceedings at the conference today. Our Political Correspondent, chris mason, reports from manchester. A morning with the media for the Prime Minister looks Something Like this. Cameras everywhere, even stylistic help on offer. But after the comb, a quick ruffle of the hair. And straight away to the crux of the brexit conundrum, keeping the irish border open when the uk and ireland are following different rules after brexit. The difficulty really is going to be around the Customs Union and to what extent Northern Ireland can be retained within eu bodies at all. We have made a very good offer, we are going to make a very good offer, we will table it formally very soon. But there is a difficulty if you try to keep Northern Ireland in the Customs Union. One of the basic things about being a country is that you have a single customs perimeter and a single Customs Union. The Prime Minister accepts the reality, as he puts it, of customs checks being necessary on the island of ireland after brexit, but is still not providing details of how he thinks this could happen in a way that doesnt amount to moving the border somewhere else. But borisjohnson says he is compromising, with agriculture in Northern Ireland effectively being regulated by the European Union. The uk government has already made a very considerable offer. If you look at what were saying on the sanitary and phytosanitary arrangements, that is we are already accepting that you could have, in the famous words attributed to ian paisley the elder, you could have a situation which, as it were, in Northern Ireland the people are british but the cattle are irish. That is a big concession by the uk government. The government says the earlier idea it had submitted to brussels, so called non paper which suggested customs clearance zones in ireland or Northern Ireland, is not the same as the legal text they are going to submit in the next few days. But there is a sense that there are some in these negotiations who are just desperate to trash anything the uk suggests. Who could they be thinking of . Well, here was the irish deputy Prime Minister last night nothing cryptic about his view on this floated idea. So what happens if there isnt a deal . Mrjohnson later suggested if the eu delayed brexit again, against the governments will, it would regret it. Brexit is due to happen, remember, at the end of this month. How it happens, and whether it happens, remains farfrom clear. Chris mason, bbc news, in manchester. Joining me now from westminster is lord hain, who served as Northern Ireland secretary from 2005 to 2007 under tony blair. Good afternoon. This comment from the Prime Minister about the fact they must be customs check on the island of ireland, is that something new and significant by way of a acknowledgement of the reality of the situation . It is new and significant, yes, but it is a serious departure from the good friday agreement and the agreement thatis friday agreement and the agreement that is a International Agreement that is a International Agreement that the British Government struck with the European Union, including the irish government, back at the end of 2017, namely that it would uphold the situation where there is an open invisible border with no checks and controls. Also, and this is another important point, Boris Johnson has a record of breaking the law and i believe that if he recedes with these checks, whether they are a couple of miles from the border or some kind of technological arrangement or both, he will be contravening his own government 2018 withdrawal from the european act and section ten which states and i will quote, that specifically bans border arrangements between Northern Ireland and the republic of ireland after exit date which feature physical infrastructure, including border posts or checks and controls that did not exist before exit today and are not in accordance with an agreement between the uk and the European Union. That is crystal clear. You are not allowed by the law of the land that his conservative government brought in in which he voted for, the eu withdrawal act, it cannot put checks in place that he is now proposing to do. I would not now looking for something new because everything that you have just outlined has something new because everything that you havejust outlined has not been agreed by those who ultimately need to agree upon it . It was agreed and it was endorsed by parliament and it was endorsed by parliament and now he is not agreeing, he is reneging on an international treaty. Ina way, reneging on an international treaty. In a way, that would be an entitlement of an incoming Prime Minister by agreement with the eu on a detail ofan minister by agreement with the eu on a detail of an overall agreement. This is fundamental. This is about peace in Northern Ireland. This is about rolling back the whole progress that we have made over the last couple of decades, especially since the 1998 good friday agreement, and the work that before tony blair was done byjohn major, conservative Prime Minister. That was painstaking work and it depended upon there being an invisible open border, just as there is between yorkshire and lancashire, between the republic and Northern Ireland, and that is not going to be the case. What we are now looking at, as you would presumably acknowledge, is that the backstop element of what was initially put forward hasnt worked, simply because it has not got the agreement it needs on either side of this stage. So those involved have got to find a different approach and what the Prime Minister would now say, presumably, is that given the search for alternative arrangements, this is what we put forward and it should not be automatically to use trashed by the other side straightaway. Not be automatically to use trashed by the other side straightawaym was agreed between both sides. He is reneging on it. I do not see how he can comply with bringing in new checks and arrangements which effectively do mean a border. If you are having your own customs arrangements that are different from those on the other side of the border, then people have got to be checked going across, lorries have got to be checked. Even if you have the same arrangements, for foodstuff and livestock, there are checks involved as well and tariffs involved as well and tariffs involved at customs borders. Tariffs on meat going from Northern Ireland to the republic of ireland and vice ve rsa. To the republic of ireland and vice versa. We are into a very different arrangement from what was promised, including by Boris Johnson, arrangement from what was promised, including by borisjohnson, by successive brexit leaders as well as by the previous conservative government and by everybody, that actually there would be no changes of such a fundamental kind to a irish border, would not only unravel the good friday Peace Process, and mean that people can cross the border, there was one case reported yesterday of a woman who lives right on the border, she turns left she is in the republic of ireland, if she turns right out of her front gate she is in Northern Ireland. These types of complexities can unravel all the peace. The conclusion to draw from what you have said, is that therefore we are heading for no deal and if we end up with no deal then a lot of those checks that you are so alarmed about will presumably come into being anyway. Yes, very well and they will be even harder but Boris Johnsons well and they will be even harder but borisjohnsons solution is not going to solve that problem. It is going to solve that problem. It is going to solve that problem. It is going to be a pretty hard body. There may not be watchtowers on that border, although if there are places where those checks are made or surveillance or technological centres, whatever the imagine i imaginea centres, whatever the imagine i imagine a technology is, then those places will be the subject of resista nce places will be the subject of resistance by nationalist communities, let alone the response of armed paramilitaries who have never bought into the Peace Process in the provisional ira dead and sinn fein did, and then were back into serious trouble. I think no responsible british Prime Minister, including borisjohnson should ever get into this territory. Thank you for coming on. There have been violent clashes in hong kong between police and protestors as china celebrates the 70th anniversary of communist rule. One protestor has been shot in the chest with live ammunition and at least 15 people are in hospital. Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in defiance of a ban on protests and were met with Police Firing tear gas and live rounds the foreign secretary dominic raab has condemned the use of live ammunition as disproportionate and called for restraint on all sides. Our diplomatic correspondent, paul adams reports and a warning his piece contains scenes some viewers might find upsetting. One anniversary, two reactions. While beijing celebrated, hong kong was once again full of defiance. It began peacefully enough, protesters filling the streets to mark what they see as a black day, rejecting the communist party and its leadership. Appealing to the International Community to support their calls for democracy. Official slogans were torn down. Set alight. Organisers have called this a day of grief. Gunshots. It was a day of violence, too, and rage among the worst so far. All over the city, hardcore protesters confronted the police. The response volleys of tear gas and rubber bullets. One clash outside government offices witnessed by bbc correspondent stephen mcdonell. Theyre moving up the stairs to try and reach where the police are. Charging forward. The protesters are hoping that they have the numbers, but the police are continually firing at them, round after round of rubber bullets and tear gas. And now the protesters are retreating. Theres been too many rubber bullets fired, too much tear gas. And there was worse in the market town of tsuen wan, a policeman pulled out a pistol and shot an 18 year old protester at point blank range. Its thought to be the first time live ammunition has been used in this way. The protester is now in hospital in critical condition. This was always going to be a day of high emotion, but as the authorities in beijing spoke of peaceful reunification, the reality on the streets of hong kong was very different. Paul adams, bbc news. And in the last few minutes, hong kongs Police Commissioner has been speaking to reporters about the latest clashes. He said the territory was in what he called a difficult moment but the authorities would remain stead fast. He said the police were committed to protecting everyone in hong kong but admitted that today was a sad day for the city. Today i am sad. Our national day is supposed to be a day to celebrate and be happy but unfortunately some rioters choose to do all these sorts of criminal damages, arson, assaulting Police Officers and various behaviour which, more or less, is equivalent to a riot offence. Almost demonstrating to the whole world that we are supposed to be proud, hong kong is a safe city, that today is really sad for me. Lets go to hong kong now our correspondent there is stephen mcdonell. The intensity of what has gone on seems to be as great as it has been. Absolutely, some other details coming out of that press conference. Police say they fired six bullets, one into that teenage student and five more warning rounds. It shows you how serious things are becoming. Another thing police said is they have arrested more than 180 activists, that makes it the most throughout this entire crisis by a long shot. Resort fires, Water Cannons being used, not only to Disperse Protesters but to put out the many fires, especially those let on top of barricades, the entrance toa train on top of barricades, the entrance to a train station was on fire. Rubber bullets, tear gas and tens of thousands of people still turned out to protest despite the warnings that there could be violence, despite the threat of being arrested, but the crucial change was that a student being shot. We have been waiting for this to happen, to tell the truth. There have been plenty of occasions when the police could have shot, fired warning shots are pulled out their service revolver. Now that somebody has been shot by the police, does that make it less likely that access will come to the barricades or more . I think some people might be afraid not turn up, others though will be enraged by it. Not only will it make it more likely for them tojoin in protest in the coming days, for example, next weekend, but to become potentially more militant. Maybe threatening more militant. Maybe threatening more violence on their side. One thing is for sure, this was not the 70th anniversary of the communist party coming to power that authorities would have wanted in hong kong yet this is exactly how eve ryo ne hong kong yet this is exactly how everyone will remember the 70th anniversary. As a day of conflict, violence, chaos and mass rebellion, really, against chinese rule here in hong kong. Thank you very much. In a speech in beijing to mark 70 years since the Chinese Communist party took control, president xi jinping said no force could stop chinas onward march. Crowds cheered as thousands of soldiers marched through Tiananmen Square in a display of military might. Robin brant sent this report from the capital. For big birthdays, chinas Ruling Communist Party doesnt do things by halves. Lined up perfectly and ready to go, 15,000 military personnel prepare to parade past the countrys top political leaders. President xijinping, unhindered now by limits on his term in office, took centre stage. Beside him, two predecessors one of them, jiang zemin, so old and frail now that he needed help to his seat. Looking on too were the countrys most senior party officials, all of them men. Surprise, surprise, security is very tight here ahead of the parade. The police just moving a few people down from the main thoroughfare, where we will see the tanks later. But make no mistake, china does want the world to look in at this event. The military leadership have said this is not about the show of force, but this is definitely about china showing off on its 70th birthday about how far its come. Translation it was today 70 years ago that chairman mao stood at this very place and announced solemnly the founding of the peoples republic of china. Before today, military leaders said it wasnt supposed to be a flexing of muscle. But make no mistake, this was, more than anything, a military display by a nation that after 70 years is once again taking its place at the top table. Robin brant, bbc news, beijing. Four romanian men and a woman have been sentenced to a total of 27 years and 4 months, after breaking into around 400 homes in the West Midlands, and stealing millions of pounds in jewellery. Police only caught the gang, after one of them was discovered to have a very small footprint. Sian lloyd has more. Draped in cash, 28 year old florina spiru was even photographed wearing some of the jewellery she helped dispose of. Stolen from homes across the West Midlands by a group led by her husband, catalin zaharia. This Security Camera footage shows him clambering up bed sheets. The group often entered and exited houses through upstairs windows to avoid ground floor alarm systems. David and norma richardsons home was one of the last to be burgled before the gang was caught. I think ijust. Ijust could not accept it, i couldnt take it in. I didnt realise that somebody had been in there and taken everything. When we started looking, everything had gone. An earring, that had been worn by the bride. Just some of the items yet to be reunited with their rightful owners, found at a house rented by the gang and described as an aladdins cave of stolen jewellery. They evaded capture for years until a footprint left by zaharia tripped them up. We had noticed from the start of this series, whoever was committing these offences, had very small feet. They were leaving a footprint impression, consistently the same trainer, the same pattern, but very small, round about a size five. When Police Stopped his car for a separate offence they found his footprints matched. It led them to the other gang members. Today they have been sentenced to a total ofjust over 27 in prison. I will be joined by our sports editor. Thank you, olly foster. More now on the violent clashes in hong kong between police and protestors as china celebrates the 70th anniversary of communist rule. Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in defiance of a ban on protests and were met with Police Firing tear gas and live rounds. Lets talk now to political activist, joseph cheng. He joins me now from hong kong via webcam. Good evening to you. In queue. Given the significance of todays date, or youre always fearful that we see the scenes we have today . Thank you. Exactly. All parties concerned sort of expected a climax at a because it is national day, the protester certainly wanted to embarrass the chinese authorities and at the same time, previous clashes between the protesters and the police have been building got very strong with hostility. So in fa ct, very strong with hostility. So in fact, tear gas was fired as early as 2pm and there were quite a number of violent clashes and many people were arrested. Where does this go from here do you think . I am struck by your use of the word climax, which implies that it might die down after this but it doesnt look very likely to do that. Since the carrie lamb administration has indicated that it will make no further concessions, it is difficult to expect anything to come out from the dialogue with the community, conducted by the government at this stage. Certainly, the protesters will continue to press on with their demands. There isa press on with their demands. There is a serious fear that beijing will support a strong policy of crackdowns, so the future is very uncertain, but when we say climax, it is expected of course that these clashes and protest activities cannot be sustained indefinitely. They are also District Councils to be held at the end of november. So there may be a chance for a slowing down of the activities, but certainly the problem, the crisis is far done from being solved. When you look at the protest activity specifically, do you acknowledge that within the groups of protesters, the vast majority of whom are there now appears to be a determinedly violent faction . Not so. The vast majority of the protesters remain peaceful. For example, today, this afternoon, and hong kong, there was a peaceful protest march, i also participated. People went home peacefully after that. It certainly repeated the pattern that after the Peaceful Protesters returned home, some of the radical, young processes stayed behind, they threw rocks, and clashed with the police took place. Public opinion is still on the side of the protesters, mainly because people are angry that there hasnt been no concessions from the government and they are also angry with the level of Police Brutality and the involvement of the triads and the involvement of the triads and gangsters attacking the protesters. If the government said we will have an independent look at what the police have done here, do you think that would be sufficient to bring these protest to a close . This would be a very important beginning and an important to improve Public Opinion polls have indicated 80 of the responders other people want such independent commissions and inquiry, but at the same time, 65 of the respondents wa nt to same time, 65 of the respondents want to see the executive the step down. We will see what the next step is. Thank you forjoining us. Well as weve been hearing borisjohnson has told the bbc that very constructive and far reaching proposals on a new brexit deal will be delivered to the european uninion within a few days. But mrjohnson also said breaking away from the eu would means some form of customs checks on the island of ireland, though not near the border. The question of how to avoid border checks after brexit has proved to be among the most difficult challenges thrown up by brexit. Our reality check correspondent, chris morris, explains why it has proved so intractable. The irish border its the main reason why theresa mays efforts to negotiate an orderly withdrawal from the European Union were rejected in the house of commons three times. Uk and eu negotiators agreed what became known as the backstop, but now borisjohnson insists it has to go. Here is a reminder of exactly what it is. The backstop is key to talks over the future of the irish border after brexit. Why . Because this line between the irish republic and Northern Ireland will be the only land border between the uk and the European Union. That matters for trade, because in theory there should be checks on stuff crossing the border after brexit. But no one wants new inspections at the border. They bring back memories of 30 years of conflict in Northern Ireland, and checkpoints could become a target. Thats where the backstop comes in. Its a legal guarantee to avoid a hard border under all circumstances. Its part of the agreement that sets out the uks withdrawal from the eu. An agreement of the British Government is now seeking to renegotiate. The backstop would come into effect only if the uk and the eu cant agree a future trade deal after brexit. It would mean the whole of the uk would stay in the same customs territory as the eu, with Northern Ireland even more closely tied to eu rules than the rest of the uk. And thats just not acceptable to the current government. It wants trade across the border to continue, but insists that uk sovereignty must be respected. Some checks on goods can certainly take place away from the border, in warehouses or business premises. But whether you talk of customs posts, clearance centres or whatever, there would be checks of some kind and an end to frictionless trade. Thats not getting a warm reception in dublin or among business groups in Northern Ireland. It is of deep concern. This is contradictory to a lot of the advice that both myself at the freight transport association, and pretty much every Business Organisation in Northern Ireland, have given the government in the last two and a half years. Talks will intensify in brussels but unless the eu has a big change of heart, it looks likely to reject the kind of solution the government is suggesting. Chris morris, bbc news. At about three, we will get someone to go to the shop for us, and then we will go somewhere and just sit there and drink it all. These children are just 15. Too young to drink, but on a school night, it is what they do. To protect their identities, we are using actors voices. We would rather be out than doing school work. And in the house, you get told stuff. What you did. The day after. And you are like, that was embarrassing. In this town, police have found children as young as ten drinking alcohol. And there are more under age teens admitted to hospital because of alcohol in barrow than anywhere else in england. Previously, it was the later teens, early adults. And now the age range is moving down into what we would regard as children. Tom, not his real name, isjust14. He drank so much vodka, hejumped from a multistory car park. His voice is also spoken by an actor. They had to ring an ambulance and then i woke up. I was in a hospital bed. That mustve been really frightening. Yes, it was. Why would you do that to yourself . I dont know. I dont know why ijumped off. I was just kissed and drunk. Were going to have a session about alcohol and how you stay safe. Cath is trying to help pupils who drink. She runs a charity called drop zone. It educates children who are struggling in school. She even looks at teenagers out on the streets to teach them about the dangers of drinking. We are finding now that young people are drinking monday, tuesday nights, wednesday night, thursday nights, it is continual, young people are falling asleep at the desk, young people are coming into our education very tired. We just say give your liver a rest. Some people will find that quite shocking because that is the sort of thing you will say to somebody who is in their 30s and 405. Yeah. I think young people are living that older lifestyle. There is concern here that children are missing out on their childhoods. One Public Health official says parents buy teenagers alcohol to keep them happy. And only projects like drop zone can actually warning can actually warn them of the dangers. It is all about educating the young people about the alternative. How do you know this approach is working . We cannot guarantee that approach is going to solve things but if we dont try, we will never know. Tom learned from his own mistakes. But why did you get yourself into that space . I dont know. I was bored. It made me never want to drink again. Because of his experience, tom is telling his friends to stop drinking too. A decision normally made by people twice his age. But one the Health Professionals here hope will make a difference. The headlines on bbc news. Borisjohnson tells the bbc the government will offer the eu very constructive and far reaching proposals in the coming days. The worst violence in four months, police shoot a protestor in hong kong as china celebrates 70 years of communist rule. And flood warnings are issued across the uk, with some regions expected to see two weeks worth of rain in less than an hour. For years, weve been told to eat less red or processed meat to reduce our chance of developing cancer, but now a new study has cast doubt on that advice. An International Team of experts has concluded theres little evidence to support it, and the risks from eating bacon, sausages or steak has been overstated. But the study has caused widespread controversy, with one scientist condemning it as dangerously misguided. Our medical correspondent, fergus walsh, reports. There have been repeated studies linking red and especially processed meat with Heart Disease and cancer. The current guidance from the government advises people to eat no more than 70g of red and processed meat a day, equivalent to two rashers of bacon or 1. 5 pork sausages. Now, a team of International Experts has reviewed existing data and found only weak evidence that it is worth trying to cut back. Its worth stressing that they did not find there was no evidence of harm, but simply that it was very weak. The argument here is not so much about the evidence, but how its interpreted. Theres agreement on the evidence linking processed meat to cancer risk. Its a small effect, but it is there. Whats different here is that the researchers are recommending that it doesnt matter that much on an individual level. It doesnt matter that much on an individual level, but when you look at it across a lot of people, those effects can really add up. In 2015, the World Health Organization said eating 50g of processed meat a day, less than two slices of bacon, increased the chances of getting bowel cancer by 18 . In the uk, six out of every 100 people will get bowel cancer at some point. If we all ate an extra 50g of bacon a day for the rest of our lives, one more person per 100 would get bowel cancer. So what did customers at this cafe in Central London make of the latest research . I laughed. Something like this is always coming out in the news. You cant eat this, you can eat this. You shouldnt eat this, you should eat this. Have milk, dont have milk. Have meat, dont have meat. I mean, im lost. The job i do, im so active anyway that i can pretty much eat anything i like. Yeah, i dont think its a problem in moderation. Id rather stay away from processed, because i dont know exactly what goes into that. As far as red meats are concerned, straight off the cow, aint done me no harm. So cutting back on the amount of bacon or burgers you eat may make very little difference to your individual risk of getting bowel cancer, but across a whole population, it could mean preventing thousands of cases per year. Fergus walsh, bbc news. One person has died in a violent attack at a Vocational College in finland. Ten people are said to have been injured, two seriously, in town of kuopio. The winner of the Royal Institute of british architects most prestigious award, the Riba Stirling prize, will be announced a week today. There are six nominations for britains best new building of 2019 which include a railway station, new Council Housing and a property made entirely of cork. We will be taking a closer look at each of the nominated buildings over the next week. Today we look at the nevill holt opera building. The 400 seat opera house is tucked away in the leicestershire countryside. Its located in the stable block which is attached to a grade i listed building that dates back to before the year 1300. This is originally a stable block courtyard. Weve converted this beautiful, Historic Building into an exceptional but intimate theatre. You cant see it at all from the outside. You enter the building and this remarkable space is revealed. In contrast to many opera theatres which have gold and red velvet seats, we wanted to retain some of the character of the stable yard. We already had these rich iron stone walls, timber and felt a natural material to go to. Our first task is to make a new floor, to bring the stage at ground level. We then created a new roof over the courtyard to make the room. But we wanted to keep a memory of the courtyard and so we introduced a large rooflight over the space. Classical singing. We have a mission at nevill holt opera to encourage Young Artists and young performers and we want them to excel and sound excellent in this acoustic. The building is a little bit like an instrument and we had to tune it to ensure young performers can hear their own voices when theyre performing. We did this with adjustments to the form of the balcony and ensuring there are reflective surfaces which bring the sound back to the performers. And the wooden material, very carefully designed and selected by the acousticians makes sure that the sound resonates but also is absorbed by the stone walls, so the whole Building Works in harmony. We get resonance and absorption. I can safely say there is not a bad seat to be had in this house and everywhere, the music in this building sounds fantastic. You can find out more about all of the nominated buildings on the bbc arts website and watch this years Riba Stirling prize live here on the bbc news channel next tuesday evening from 8. 30.
