We were born hearing, and when we became seven one with ten seven we became deaf at the same time. Everything changed. We lost our hearing, we can speak anymore, we felt quite isolated. If you think about going to a concert, especially for a deaf person, what they would feel would be the vibrations coming through the floor into the air, and just feel very strongly based around the stomach. 0h oh my god, well, it was emotional. Same. They got emotional. Strong reaction. It feels like something that should have happened a long time ago. Ive played a deaf rave, you played the base. It was sick. Wow. That looks amazing. Lets go back to the beginning. If youve ever tried to record sound outside or even if you tried making a phone call on a breezy day, you will know that wind is the enemy. Even the slightest breeze causes turbulence on the mic, which you hear is a pretty deafening roar. Now the best way to solve this problem is to stop the wind from getting to the mic by using Something Like this, a fluffy or a dougal, or a dead cat. The bigger the fluffy the better the wind is blocked out, but there are times when a large microphonejust isnt convenient. Like, for example, when youre doing back flips through a snowy street, travelling at speed over not very much snow. Energy drink makerand over not very much snow. Energy drink maker and extreme sports nuts red bull wanted to record the athletes up close and personal, so they asked a hearing aid, headphone, and microphone designers to make something small, light, and cable free to stick in places where there is no room for a big fluffy. The research into Noise Cancellation and sound enhancement goes on here at their headquarters in copenhagen. And this is where the x mike was born. Because they need to test their devices and lots of different audio conditions they have different rooms with different acoustic characteristics. This is the Anechoic Chamber which is completely acoustically dead. This is the chamber where they test Noise Cancellation. And this is the wind tunnel where we currently have a breeze of two metres per second. But if we increase that to eight metres per second you should start to hear a lot of rumbling on my microphone here, which will be quite unpleasant to listen to. And if we take it all the way up to 15 metres per second, my guess is that you are really struggling to hear what i am saying. Inaudible. If you switch to the x mic audio, im hoping use and still be able to hear what im actually saying. All right. This really is maxing out the wind tunnel and even the prototype x mic is struggling. But, obviously, its still doing a lot better than oui its still doing a lot better than our mic. Part of the secret is in the soft, fluffy fabric, but is in the soft, fluffy fabric, but is in the round shape which reduces turbulence, and parties in the Digital Signal Processing dsp algorithms which subtract the windows from the recording as being made. What we have done is we have learned through years and years of testing what is wind frequency and what is other sound frequency. And then we said those dsp algorithms to make sure we block out the frequencies that we believe are wind, what frequency raised we want to block out and what we want to keepin to block out and what we want to keep in let through . So the x mic mark one has done 0k, keep in let through . So the x mic mark one has done ok, but not elliot lee in the wind tunnel. But how will the mark to do in the wild but not brilliantly. When we identify those sounds as signifying danger, we have evolved to recognise those sounds and react to. React to them. In the modern world we have become ever more used to isolating ourselves from the world around us. For most people, recognising those sounds are something we do every single day, but getting devices to recognise different sounds is something that has traditionally been challenging. Now, one uk based Company Claims to have cracked that problem. Audio analytic has developed a new technology to recognise a wide range of sounds that can then be used as a trigger for a number of different actions. What this technology does is it is softwa re what this technology does is it is Software Based Artificial Intelligence to identify and recognise everyday sounds. And it can be integrated into a number of products. I will show you a couple of exa m ples products. I will show you a couple of examples of how it might work stop one common application is in headphones. Walking down the street for example, there is an angry dog nearby. Barking. Caution, there is a dog nearby. Increasing transparency. In that situation it would recognise a dog barking, lowered the music or cut out in your headphones and warn you there is a dog nearby. In smart speakers, most of us have these things around the home now, and it could be arranged to listen passively for things like a baby crying. Baby crying. Sound recognition is different from speech recognition, and we have had to come in and sold some of those fundamental differences, baby crying sounds very different from another baby crying. There is a huge diversity from when they are six months old to two years old. But all of that we refer to as baby cry. So there is some commonality and we need to teach those machines that commonality. But as we know, ai can only ever be as good as the Training Data it works with. So they have to ca ptu re data it works with. So they have to capture these sounds live. Naturally, wanted to witness this firsthand. And what better way to start, then with a couple of very good dogs. This is an Anechoic Chamber, or in this case, semi Anechoic Chamber. It is designed to absorb sound. We are here to record these two, hopefully barking on demand. Barking. These waveforms i can see on this screen are representations of what is coming off the microphone is in there. And in the actual dog bark threshold that the system is listening for. When it identifies them, you should hear it activate. Listening for. We have to go and collect all the data, we have the world s largest collection of audio data, 15 million files, that help us train the technology itself. Im back at the south downs hills where it is time to test the jabra microphone, design to reduce noise in extreme sport and record high quality audio on this tiny device. I am putting it against the best Professor Mike we have that is even vaguely portable, in that it cabled to a zoom recorder and stuffed into my pocket. Exactly what you dont need in extreme sports. And for a more realistic comparison, i also record sound on my phone and my gopro. Now all i have to do is run. Run, run like the wind yeah laughs . Wow so we are up, and the wind is definitely blowing in my face. We are flying at about 25 mph at the moment, so we are is now time to see what all the microphone sound like. Loud wind noise. Although you can hear my voice on my phone and they go broke the wind noise is pretty intrusive. It would certainly blast out the subtleties that jabra was specifically asked to ca ptu re. That jabra was specifically asked to capture. How about our high quality mic with all its cables, versus the relatively small x mic, with no ca bles relatively small x mic, with no cables and on board recording . I have no idea what these are recording, but as you watch we will switch from this normal mike to that jabra x mic, and i will guess that you will instantly hear the difference, you should hear something that is a lot clearer, and with very little rohrer of wind noise. Although my voice is pretty clear in both recording, the background wind is definitely reduced. So much so in fact that we can hearjess all the way behind me, telling me about paragliding in the himalayas. What is paragliding 12,000 feet like, is a different experience . Everything is more full on in the mountains. So the developments in the weather, and understanding the cloud, and just loads of amazing birds, huge, massive vultures. Interestingly, the x mic is not going on general sale. Instead, jabra are using it as rnd for its existing, more down to earth products. If we can get a microphone to work at 100 kilometres an hour down a ski slope you can bet that an office, noisy office, you can make a very good phone call without any noise disturbance. But to make sure everyone gets a signal, five more transmitters have been permanently installed above the stage. And a tiny microphone on the device listens to what is being played on stage, so it can sync up with a mix that your device is being sent, so when you adjust the levels, it will be in real time. People when you adjust the levels, it will be in realtime. People are paid a lot of money for concert tickets, and people in the seats, if you can give them better quality sound, it will make everybody happy. All right, elton john is will make everybody happy. All right, eltonjohn is about to start performing. Lets see how this thing fa res. Guitar sound. Keyboard sound. Drums sound. Wow. That sounds great. The vocals are crisp, you can really hear the guitar, but because i am too close to the stage, i cant really distinguish what im hearing on stage and on here with the drums. So what im going to do is go to the back of the hall and see how it fa res back of the hall and see how it fares there. It works even better further back from the stage. To listen to the mix you given normal earphones earphones instead of noise cancelling, so you dont lose out on hearing the atmosphere two. The people who are hard of hearing, you do have locations in the concert hall where people can come and hear this, allows them to actually be anywhere in the concert hall. It is not for everyone, there are people who already have superior sound quality and they do not wish to have it improved, but there are people who want to experience concerts in a different way, so it is really allowing for everyone to opt into how they want to experience the concert. And that is what we found. Not everybody enjoyed using it. Concert. And that is what we found. Not everybody enjoyed using itm is an amazing system, and i even like people next to me listen to it but it is like, you have to be very sure of yourself to use that system as an artist. The music was very loud, you have to put that even louder, so its going to be like. Losing your ear. The sound is really clear, im not sure eltonjohn concert is the best concert to use it out because the sound mix is really good here. You heard it around you, but in the mean time you are isolated as well. Yeah elton exactly, like that. As innovative as this kid is it may not be for you that you may just want to go to this kid is it may not be for you that you mayjust want to go to a concert and experience it organically. But having the option to mix your favourite artist while they perform in front of you, this might bea they perform in front of you, this might be a new direction in live music. But it has been a very turbulent end to the week, and it is going to be a rather wet and windy weekend for many of us, and there is growing concern with this next deep area of low pressure now developing, that more rain on already saturated ground, with river levels high, will result in further flooding. As well as that we have some strong winds around this low pressure system coinciding with high tides, because of the new moon, the full moon, so there could be coastal flooding too. A band of rain moves across Northern Ireland, northern england, southern scotland, any mist and fog to the north will clear away, showery rain across Northern Areas does tend to ease, the showery rain further south eases away, so a day of sunny spells and showers, probably not as heavy showers today as we saw yesterday, but nevertheless, they are still around, still wet. It should feel pleasant enough with light winds and sunshine, but as the day progresses, the afternoon progresses we are in for a big change, theres more tropical air tied in with this area of low pressure, so there will be widespread, heavy intense rain, some thundery rain in there as well, and strong to Gale Force Winds blowing in that rain and coinciding with high tides, we could have coastal inundation. So really wet and windy through the night as we move into sunday. And that rain is really slow to clear, could be scotland and Northern Ireland escape the worst of the rain, and as the day goes on we change our wind direction and pick up a colder north north westerly, but that will have a sting in its tail, you can see for england and wales, which has more rain re entering around the area of low pressure. So temperature really academic on sunday but feeling colder in the north, later in the day as winds switch direction they may have a sting in the tail, we would have strong to Gale Force Winds crossing into wales and later england and down the north sea coast, but potentially corresponding or tying in with high tides here, so we will concern ourselves with some coastal flooding here as well late on sunday. Lots to keep our eye on, it looks really unsettled through the weekend, heavy rain, gales, there are warnings out from the met office, there on the website, and those high tides as well. Further afield we are expecting rain for the rugby which continues into the weekend, japan ireland on saturday, potentially having some heavy downpours around here, and for australia wales, i would not like to rule out downpours either.
