Growing interference. Cities around the world close their streets to traffic for world car free day organisers want to promote greener travel alternatives. And coming up at a30, the inside out macro Team Investigates the number of crashes by on duty star for emergency services. Good afternoon. It is four oclock. The labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has sought to play down divisions in his top team after one of his key aides announced hes resigning. It comes as the party prepares to debate brexit. Heres our Political Correspondent nick eardley. Not everything here is going according to plan. Jeremy corbyn wants to persuade you he is ready for power, but one of his key aides has raised concerns. Andrew fisher, still by mr corbyns side this morning, is quitting, privately accusing the leaders team of a blizzard of lies and saying he no longer has faith in them. I have obviously seen the words that andrew wrote, and i discussed them with him at some length. Why do you think he said that . I think he said that because he was extremely distressed at that point about whatever was going on in discussions in the office at that moment. Jeremy corbyn would much rather focus on his policies, but the start of the conference has been dominated by controversy. Yesterday, there was a foiled plot mr corbyns left wing allies to get rid of his outspoken deputy, tom watson. It wasnt a move against him specifically, but concerns about the role of deputy leader, and i was not aware that the particular motion was going to be moved at that time. I dont think we should make rule changes on a whim. At the heart of some tensions is brexit, with tom watson again calling this afternoon for the party to say it backs staying in the eu to be unequivocally pro remain. Many members agree, and they are frustrated that the leadership hasnt picked a side. They are walking a tightrope, trying to appeal to both remain and leave voters, so mr corbyn just will not commit. We will put both views and say, this is the best deal we can get, this is the remain and hopefully reform option, these are the choices before you. If you negotiate what you regard as a good deal with brussels, do you campaign for it or not . Lets see what we get and well put that final decision to the people. Is he a Prime Minister in waiting . It is a question voters might be asked soon. If he wins power, Jeremy Corbyn says he will serve a full term, but what that means with brexit is still unclear. Nick eardley, bbc news, at the Labour Party Conference in brighton. Well, iain watson is at the Party Conference now. Iain. Yes, indeed, im joined iain. Yes, indeed, imjoined byjames mills, used to work for shadow chancellorjohn mcdonnell, mills, used to work for shadow chancellor john mcdonnell, you mills, used to work for shadow chancellorjohn mcdonnell, you would have known Andrew Fisher quite well, he is leaving the labour party, leaving the service ofJeremy Corbyn at the end of this year, somebody who drew up the last manifesto that you work done. A bit of a blow for the labour leadership . He is a friend, i worked with him on the 2015 campaign with jeremy, friend, i worked with him on the 2015 campaign withjeremy, and on the manifesto, and he is a really nice guy. Look, we have similar kids the same age, with these jobs, you know, what is not reported is that it takes a lot out of your personal life. That is why i left at the start of day, i have young kids, so the family stuff is true, we have kids of a similar age. Andrew is a lovely guy, very committed, and it is just that, honestly, lovely guy, very committed, and it isjust that, honestly, you lovely guy, very committed, and it is just that, honestly, you work from early in the morning to late at night, and if you have got young children, go to school, nursery, yourfamily children, go to school, nursery, your family life goes on, you say . But when you work in these jobs, you never stop, you are answering your phone at the christmas dinner table, that sort ofjob. So there is a personal aspect. There undoubtedly is, and you know him well, but it seems to have two resignation letters, the one that i was sent, the stresses of family life, young kids, and one which is more limited, more restricted circulation, that the sunday times has got their hands on, talking about brutal personal relations behind the scenes, talking about whether the whole operation was competent, far more cutting criticism. Tim shipman is a brilliant journalist, criticism. Tim shipman is a brilliantjournalist, but criticism. Tim shipman is a brilliant journalist, but it criticism. Tim shipman is a brilliantjournalist, but it is like any workplace, there is workplace politics, you have good friends, and you send around something that you say in private. You dont always mean it, it is the frustration of the moment, i know i have done it. But look, look, andrew is committed tojeremy but look, look, andrew is committed to jeremy and the but look, look, andrew is committed tojeremy and the project, his worst saying is that he is a spurs fan, thatis saying is that he is a spurs fan, that is the truth he is utterly, co nte ntedly that is the truth he is utterly, contentedly a spurs fan. People get very emotional about football, but also if they do not think the team is delivering, and it seems to be a worry behind the scenes in the Leaders Office with where the party is in the opinion polls, it is not cutting through like it should on the eve of a snap election. Look, an election has not been called, this is similarto election has not been called, this is similar to 2017, when i was working with andrew then, coming to the manifesto, and the tories had a similar lead, but the moment the starting gun happened, the broadcasting kicked in, a bit of parity, you couldnt have government stories about buying a dog dominating the airwaves, and if there is an election, andrew will stay on until then, doing the same job as before, getting the policy agenda out to the general public so we can have those debates. I think you will see a difference then. If i we re you will see a difference then. If i were a tory, i would be buried. Borisjohnson, were a tory, i would be buried. Boris johnson, meant to were a tory, i would be buried. Borisjohnson, meant to be in his honeymoon period, and he is less popular than theresa may. Jeremy Corbyns Labour Party has a very high ceiling, and what he did well in 2017 was create an anti tory alliance, and he took labour to its highest share of the vote for many yea rs, highest share of the vote for many years, and that was with theresa may, who, people forget, took the tories to a high in the polls. Boris is not doing so well. That may be true, butJeremy Corbyns own poll rating is pretty poor as party leader, some of the worst we have seen. Leader, some of the worst we have seen. That might change during the course of edge election campaign. Seen. That might change during the course of edge election campaignlj follow the polls, and it is similar to before 2017. As you think it is recovera ble. To before 2017. As you think it is recoverable. Nonetheless, as you are suggesting, this time, last time there was an anti conservative alliance, but now that aligns his bed, people who voted to remain, they are going to the lib dems, some of them, so what should labour be doing in response to that . Now that alliance is split. What we did a couple of weeks ago was a smart play, for my point, labour is the only uk wide second Referendum Party, i think that is very clear, and if you vote labour, you will get and if you vote labour, you will get a second referendum with either soft brexit or remain on the ballot. A tory, hard brexit or no deal, a clear message to the electorate. There will be bits and bobs discussed at the fringe, that is a good thing, i am part to be a Labour Party Member where we will have a real debate. The great thing about the labour party, dont confuse debate with division, but after we come into a position, we will go out and campaign, and that is the key to what happened in 2017. That two week window where we sung with one voice, thatis window where we sung with one voice, that is what we need to do again. We we re that is what we need to do again. We were finished just here, i will ask you just one question, some people say the current policy is ambiguous, some say it could be better sold. You are a film at spin doctor, should labour be branding itself as the Referendum Party . |j should labour be branding itself as the Referendum Party . I think that is what it is getting too, that is clear, but in the a general election campaign, you get that space to fill with your narrative, you can go out and makea with your narrative, you can go out and make a case and tell a story to the country. We are a second Referendum Party that offers a safety net of either remain or suppress it, you get a serious position on brexit offered to the general public. Remain or soft brexit. Where the conservatives or not deselecting mps, they are coming up not deselecting mps, they are coming up with hard brexit or some kind of ha rd up with hard brexit or some kind of hard brexit fantasy with a transatlantic trade deal with donald trump. We will have to leave it there, although some would say that a labour leave deal is a fantasy, some of your own mps. I am even getting heckled by a former spin doctor james mills, who used to work forjohn mcdonnell, whatever he is doing during the general election, he will be campaigning to remain. Back to later in the programme, eu, but for now thank you very much indeed. Iain. Plans are in place to fly holidaymakers back to the uk if the Tour Operator thomas cook collapses, according to the foreign secretary. Dominic raab said the government would make sure no one would be stranded, but he dampened hopes of a government rescue bid for the firm. The travel company is currently in emergency talks and insists a deal to save it is still possible. 0ur transport correspondent tom burridge reports. The beginning of a holiday in majorca, on the day when britains oldest travel agent is fighting to stay afloat. A deal to save thomas cook is, we are told, still possible, but it has to come in a matter of hours. I couldnt care less. If i get stuck, i get stuck. We are concerned as to what will happen, whether we can fly home or not. Last night, confusion for holiday makers at this hotel in tunisia, as they were effectively held hostage. The hotel was, we are told, worried that money owed to it by thomas cook might not be paid. And then there are people like andrew and sharon, uncertain if their dream las vegas wedding, booked with thomas cook, will happen. Your heart sinks, youve planned everything to the minute detail, and suddenly everything could come apart at the last moment. Its just a feeling of limbo, we are not sure. The companys fate will be decied at a meeting here, where investors need to stump up an additional £200 million by tonight so thomas cook can keep operating in the coming months. In the uk, 9000 jobs are at stake. 150,000 brits are currently on thomas cook holidays abroad. The government says if the company collapses, people will be brought home. People on or booked on a thomas cook package holiday are protected under the atol scheme. If youve booked just a flight, it will be travel insurance or a claim to your credit card company, but the company is, for now at least, still operating normally. 0ur correspondent Angus Crawford is in central london. Angus. Well, to quote an insider, this really is the last roll of the dyes for thomas cook. Everyone is here at a meeting in the city, you have thomas cook board members, shareholders, banks, including the biggest shareholder of all, the Chinese Company which has prompted a significant amount of money in, fosun. So what were hearing from insiders from the company is that they are hopeful of a deal, but that is all they will say. It is also clear, they say, that no one wants to be the one to pull the plug. Negotiations continue, we are not getting any information out of those negotiations, as you would expect. We believe there will be a Board Meeting of thomas cook later tonight, we cant tell you where or when. Legally, thomas cook doesnt have to reveal any solution to this problem, or any development in this issue, until seven oclock tomorrow morning when the market opens, but previous experience in this area of administration involving Holiday Companies means we are like to hear something, at the earliest, in the middle of the night, the so called golden hours when thomas cooks fleet will be back on the ground. At the moment, thomas cook is saying very little, but on its twitter feed todayit very little, but on its twitter feed today it says that it understands people may be very unsettled, but it wa nts to people may be very unsettled, but it wants to reassure them that Flight Operations continue to operate as normal. So no information now, watch this space for developments later tonight. Angus crawford, thank you very much indeed. A boy aged 15 has been stabbed to death at a skatepark in berkshire. The teenager was pronouced dead at the scene at Salt Hill Park in slough. Police believe last nights attack happened after an argument and are appealing for witnesses. The headlines on bbc news labour insists it can win a general election, as arguments rumble beneath the surface over the partys brexit stance. Meanwhile, the party is promising free prescriptions for all as it tries to put policy back in the spotlight at a Party Conference overshadowed by internal rows. Thomas cook is holding emergency talks as it tries to agree a rescue deal to prevent it from going bust. Sport and for a full round up, from the bbc sport centre, heres 0lly foster. Afternoon to you, lukwesa. Three of the home nations got their Rugby World Cup campaigns under way this morning. Details of englands win in a moment, but well start in yokohama, where ireland swept aside an under par scotland. They scored four tries without reply for a bonus point win, 27 3. 0ur Sports Correspondent Katie Gornall was at the match. A sleepy sunday morning in yokohama peaceful, tranquil, and with no hint of whats to come. Come on, scotland in swept a celtic fusion of noise and colour. Ireland and scotland had arrived one not to miss. Im supposed to be at work. According to the rankings, this ireland side are the worlds best, but their form had been shaky, and scotland had reason to hope. Any doubts about irelands strengths were put to rest within minutes, as james ryan burrowed his way to the line with their first attack. Before scotland could regroup, ireland hit them again. Somewhere in the mass of bodies, irelands captain, rory best, grabbed the ball. The slightest gap was being exploited with ruthless efficiency. Scotland had a mount fuji sized challenge in front of them. Worse was to come when their best forward, hamish watson, left injured, and there was more than brute force on display from ireland as Andrew Conway skipped through to put them out of reach after an hour. Ireland, it turned out, had nothing to worry about. A sobering night for scotland. Despite their ranking, irelands form coming into this world cup had been a bit like the japanese weather, unpredictable, but they absolutely dominated a very disappointing scotland side here tonight. Scotland now have eight days to regroup until they play their next game against samoa in kobe, and on this evidence they will have plenty of work to do. Today was a great performance, you know, the first half, the lads took their chances very well, within the 22, probably a few opportunities that we need to brush up on, but look, a great performance all round, and important that we recover now, big performance needed next week. England also scored four tries as they were too strong for tonga, 35 3 the final score there, but they should have scored more. 0ur Sports Correspondent andy swiss was at the game in sapporo. Well, this was ultimately co mforta ble well, this was ultimately comfortable victory for england, four tries, the bonus point, but not a lwa ys four tries, the bonus point, but not always a convincing performance. They went into this match is one of the favourites and were expected to have far too much for tonga, but it certainly wasnt easy for them at first. Two tries, though, from manu tuilgai, put england in control at half time, when they led 18 3. Come the second half, they extended that lead thanks to two further tries from Luke Cowan Dickie and jamie dodge, but a lot of handling errors, a view nerves perhaps in the england team. They got the result, not the sort of stylish victory they would have been looking for, so plenty for them to work on before the next game against the usa on thursday. Big win for italy against namibia. Weve had two results in the premier league so far. Manchester united were beaten 2 0 at west ham. Yarmolenko and cresswell for the hammers. Marcus rashford went off injured for united. Ten man wolves scored a 95th minute equaliser at crystal palace, 1 1 there. In the scottish premiership, celtic are still top of the table by three points after maintaining their 100 record, they came from behind to beat kilmarnock 3 1 at home. Second placed rangers beat stjohnstone a 0 at mcdiarmid park. All the goals came in the second half. Jermaine defoe came off the bench to score twice in the last couple of minutes. Hibs laid hearts1 0 hibs laid hearts 1 0 in the edinburgh derby. Laid. Sebastian vettel has won his first race of the formula one season he finished ahead of his ferrari teamate Charles Leclerc at the singapore grand prix. Lewis hamilton was fourth but still stretches his championship lead to 65 points. Leclerc, whod started on pole, wasnt happy with the teams pit stop strategy that saw him lose the lead. Max verstappen was third for red bull. Thats all the sport for now. Ill have more for you in the next hour. More now on the Labour Party Conference. Lets cross to our Political Correspondent iain watson in brighton. Well, there is the official and unofficial labour conference going on at the moment, quite a lot of things being debated, diane abbott talking about immigration, for example, but behind the scenes there are divisions over whether labour should be campaigning to remain at the general election, or whether a decision should be put off until after the general election with a special conference. I am joined after the general election with a special conference. Iam joined by the mayor of london, sadiq khan, you are the mayor of london, sadiq khan, you a re pretty clear, the mayor of london, sadiq khan, you are pretty clear, you have always campaigned to remain, you think labour should be a remain party, what is your advice to delegates discussing whether to have this argument on the conference floor tomorrow . Well, labour is at a crossroads now. I do not think it is sustainable to maintain a neutral position. We are a party about internationalism, solidarity, social justice. My message to labour delegates as this is not a time for delay, this is not a time forfudge. We should make it unequivocally clear that we are a remain party that will go into the general election promise in the British Public a final say. Do you want to leave the eu on terms negotiated by the government, with the option of remaining in the eu, and we will campaign during that campaign to remain in the eu, all our mps campaigning to remain in the eu, no ifs or buts. There are ifs and buts from Jeremy Corbyn, saying he should be neutral during the campaign, make your decision afterwards, once a leave deal is negotiated. What is wrong with negotiating a deal first . We are labour, we show leadership, we have to understand our history, that many of the challenges we face today from Climate Change to the impact of globalisation to terrorism are best dealt with as members of the eu. There is no deal we can leave the eu with danny is better than remaining in the eu. It is not sustainable to delay forming a view until after the general election, until after the general election, until after the general election, until after we have negotiated with the eu. I have been on doorsteps week in, week out, and we need a position that is clear and consistent with our values, history and principles, and that means making it heard loud and clear labour is a remain party, we promise the British Public a final say, i cant think of anything more democratic than that, and we will campaign to remain in that referendum. The issue dividing people is whether to campaign in that way during the general election, Emily Thornberry said she would, tom watson said he would, but len mccluskey, the leader of the biggest funder of the labour party, single funder, the unite union, said people in the shadow cabinet should stand down if they cant get behind Jeremy Corbyns position. This is an important point, we are a pluralistic party, and one of the great things about jeremy pluralistic party, and one of the great things aboutJeremy Corbyn is that he believes in listening to the party, and he has confirmed that the conference is the southern policy making body of our party, and thatis policy making body of our party, and that is why i am saying to delegates here in brighton, dont delay on this, dont fudge on this, you have a responsibility as a delegate to make sure your views and your voices heard, and that means voting the way that you feel is the right thing to do, and we labour are a party that is pro eu. We are a party that is pro internatioalism, we are about solidarity, and that means this week making it quite clear that we will go into any referendum campaigning to remain in the eu. There are other people in the party, labour mps, len mccluskey, mps, who say that if you ta ke mccluskey, mps, who say that if you take that position and a general election you have nothing to say to people in labour areas, labour voters in leave areas, they want it to be clear there is an option to leave, you will be driving them away. Staying neutral doesnt mean that we will win labour voters to labour, they will vote for the tories. Staying neutral doesnt mean we will win over remain voters, they will vote lib dem. We must provide leadership, my view is the labour mayor of london, as someone who has been a labour member since i was 15 is that our values are consistent with us making it loud and clear lets persuade those who think there isa lets persuade those who think there is a land of milk and honey, all these promises made by borisjohnson in 2016 that we now know are untrue, we go into this referendum giving the British Public i final say, now we know the terms of exit, the promises made by michael gove, liam fox, they are untrue. The terms of leaving the eu are this, negotiated by theresa may all boris johnson, and the consequences are this, but actually there is a choice to now remain in the eu, and that is why it is really important to provide leadership and persuade people across the country, whether in leave or remain constituencies. That is why some are saying it is ludicrous for your leader to go off and negotiate a leave option when there are people like you in the party and many in the grassroots saying that evenif many in the grassroots saying that even if it goes to a special conference, you will back remain in any case. I accept that the deal negotiated by theresa may it was awful, i accepted negotiated by theresa may it was awful, iaccepted boris negotiated by theresa may it was awful, i accepted borisjohnsons no deal is catastrophic, and it is possible to get a better deal from the eu, make some tweaks on theresa mays deal. But any deal we get from the eu on exiting the eu is no better for us as a country, jobs, growth, prosperity, than remaining in the eu. In those circumstances, why be neutral . When we know remaining in the eu is the best option, lets say, from this conference in brighton, our position as labour, we offer the British Public a final say, and we will campaign to remain in the eu. Similar position to tom watson, the deputy leader wasnt right for people in your party to try to abolish that post on the eve of conference . Guvnor, it was ridiculous, preposterous, undemocratic, and those people should reflect on their behaviour. Haveit should reflect on their behaviour. Have it out in an argument. At worst, put another candidate against tom watson, dont abolish the post because you do not like tom watson or what they stand in for. We are a big tent, we are a family. Of course we have differences, but we come together when we realised that at the general election the choice is between a no deal brexit Prime Minister not understanding the needs of the nhs, policing and schools, and a labour party led byJeremy Corbyn with tom by his side campaigning for the many, not the few. That he can, many thanks, the mayor of london making his view very clear, saying to delegates, dont listen to what some people are telling them, some supporters of the party leader, trying to reach a compromise of fudge we should go for lunch tomorrow in a vote and suggest that the party should campaignfor remain suggest that the party should campaign for remain during a general election and not simply discuss it after a general election. 0k, iain watson, thank you. Hundreds of riot police have clashed with protestors at a Shopping Centre and Railway Station complex in hong kong, after hard line activists smashed ticketing machines and glass billboards. Its the 16th weekend of protests by pro democracy campaigners. 0ur correspondent Stephen Mcdonnell is in hong kong and watched the demonstrations as police fired tear gas at the protesters. Right now it is a peaceful sunday evening. People are jogging along next to the river behind me or going for walks, Something Like that. Hard to believe that about an hour ago there a violent conflict in the streets here. This all started when people gathered in a Shopping Centre here. It was peaceful, there was singing and chanting. And then at one point the more hard line wing of the Pro Democracy Movement moved on the mtr station and started smashing it up. The ticketing machine smashed and spraying graffiti on the walls, and then even in the general Shopping Centre there were neon signs and ads, you know, glass ads, being smashed up, lots of glass strewn along the floor. People had built a barricade at one point inside the Shopping Centre, and sprayed stuff all over the ground to make the police slip over in order to slow the approach of the riot police. Well, the right police did, though, come, and then eventually it all spilled out into the streets. You know, the Shopping Centres of hong kong have become one of the battle grounds here, and especially the mtr stations, because these hardline protesters blame the train operator for colluding with the police and with the government. They say that following pressure from mainland Chinese Media controlled by the communist party, that whenever they have a protest, that line will be shut down or stations will be closed, and so for that reason they think it is fair game to go and smash out the mtr stations. Even many people who support the more general goals of the protest movement dont all necessarily support that, and so they are kind of playing with fire in terms of public support. Nevertheless, though, with all this destruction here, of course the riot police moved in and cleared people out. We had running street battles with rubber bullets being fired, with the so called beanbag rounds. They are shot gun pellets wrapped in bags. They were fired, tear gas, bricks being thrown in the other direction at the police, and then eventually, when they moved in fast enough, the raptor units, as they are called, moved in to try and grab as many protesters as they could, and at that stage the activists fled from the scene, and now it has kind of, as i say, returned to normal here, except that you can see still much of the debris of a political crisis now in its fourth month strewn all over the area. Today is world car free day with hundreds of cities around the world banning vehicles from their streets for a few hours. In central london, more than 16 miles of roads have been closed
