In football, Kevin De Bruyne helps man city score a massive eight goals and secure victory against watford. And 75 years on from the battle of arnhem, a mass parachute drop takes place in the netherlands to mark what was known as operation Market Garden in world war ii. And well take an in depth look at the papers with our reviewers, the chief political commentator at the independent, john rentoul, and broadcaster Lucy Beresford. Stay with us for that. Good evening. The labour Leaderjeremy Corbyn has prevented an attempt by left wing activists to oust tom watson as his deputy. Mr watson likened the ploy to remove him as a sectarian attack. The Party Leadership says mr watsons role will now be reviewed rather than abolished. But labours divisions over brexit also surfaced on the first day of a conference which had been designed to demonstrate unity. Our Political Correspondent iain watson has been following the days events in brighton. The day began in relative calm after a stormy night. Labours deputy leader had almost been swept from office by left wingers who saw him as disloyal butJeremy Corbyn was not in on the plan, so to avoid damaging pre election row he had to stop some of his supporters from abolishing the post. We are going to consult on the future of the position to reflect the diversity of our society. Tom watson is the deputy leader of the party and i enjoy working with him. Tom watson leads a group of around 100 moderate mps and arriving this afternoon he accused some on the left of derailing any hope of unity. I am disappointed, because i hoped we could unite this week and i am still hoping that and that is what i am hoping to do. It is fair to say that the atmosphere has been heating up inside the labour party. Make no mistake, if tom watson had been forced out of his position as deputy leader we could have seen a pre election crisis in the main party of opposition and potentially even a split. This row has almost overshadowed the arguments about brexit. Almost. Labours late National Executive drew up its preferred brexit plan today. If passed by the Party Conference it would mean that a Labour Government would negotiate a new brexit deal in its first three months. They would then hold a referendum on this deal within six months but with the option to remain on the ballot paper. But crucially this would mean the party wouldnt decide whether to back leave or remain until after the general election. What corbyn is effectively saying is, i will speak for everyone, i will negotiate a deal much better than theresa mays. We will stop the disaster of a no dealfrom borisjohnson and we will take that back, let people decide. The trouble is that these people have already made up their mind without seeing any leave deal. Even members ofJeremy Corbyns own top team say the party should campaign to remain in the forthcoming general election. What do you think of the of labour campaigning for a labour leave version of brexit . We must make sure that we lead the campaign to remain. But if the party does not do this, tonight the local labour mp claimed that labour would be facing an electoral disaster. 0ur places in europe and in the world, and if labour does not stand for that, we will have the same results that happened in the european elections. We will be third 01 european elections. We will be third orfourth. An encouraging end for a day that had not entirely gone to plan. Jeremy corbyn wants to keep his fire trained on the enemy outside rather than inside his party. And ian watson gave us this update in the last hour from brighton. I think whatJeremy Corbyn is going to try to do is unveil a radical policy agenda. It is aimed at uniting his party, it is also aimed at trying to bring in a new generation of voters as well. Very ambitious Climate Change targets, calls for a shorter working week. But as we heard, the old divisions over brexit have reignited. It is interesting, if i may point this out about my report, is this. You have a Jeremy Corbyn ally on the left of the party, the local mp here, calling for labour to be more unambiguously remain. We have a usualJeremy Corbyn i lay on the left of the party, the trade union boss len mccluskey, calling for exactly the opposite. Then there is the tom watson affair, not even involved in attempts to oust his own deputy leader, calling into question his own authority. Around these parts they say unity is strength, but quite frankly they are going to need a very strenuous course of political bodybuilding in the next few days and indeed in the run up to the next general election. Iain watson. He was right, it was interesting. Ayesha hazarika is a former labour advisor and commentator. She told me earlier that this was not the way to start a political conference. Well, it is a very unfortunate start. Normally when you go into conference you want to go in with a very big positive message, normally a policy announcement, something to really kind of rally the troops, send a signal to the outside world that you are thrusting forward. Remember, conferences are a shop window for Political Parties to show their wares to the media and the public. This is a critical time because we could have a general election being announced within a couple of weeks. So i think for a lot of delegates i have spoken to today, i arrived lot of delegates i have spoken to today, iarrived here lot of delegates i have spoken to today, i arrived here last night, people are just a bit dazed and confused about this, because the labour party had felt like it was sort of coming together on brexit, yet to go into this Party Conference in such disarray and with such disunity is really a gift to the conservatives. You make the point that people are dazed and wondering where this came from. What is your take . Is this jon where this came from. What is your take . Is thisjon lansman from momentum going rogue, going it alone . 0r momentum going rogue, going it alone . Or do you think there is a Stronger Movement to try to sideline tom watson . I think it is a bit of both, to be honest, from sources i spoke to last night. My understanding is that a lot of the senior people in momentum were not in agreement with this particular move right now, and that there was a bit of freelancing. However, there has been a broader sort of current of disaffection with tom watson. He has spoken out about anti semitism. He has also spoken out about the brexit position, which is still sort of fairly fuzzy and unclear. So i think a lot of people felt about, you know, he was sort of being punished for disloyalty. But the thing about a Political Party is, you cannot just have thing about a Political Party is, you cannotjust have enforced purity of thought across every part of the party. It is a place where you have disagreements. You do have debates about things. And we will be finding out how that story and lots of the others are covered in tomorrows front pages at 11 30pm. 0ur others are covered in tomorrows front pages at 11 30pm. Our guests joining me tonight arejohn rentoul, chief Political Correspondent at the independence, and broadcaster and psychotherapist Lucy Beresford. Independent. The democratic president ial frontrunner, joe biden, has accused donald trump of an overwhelming abuse of power over reports the president tried to put pressure on ukraine to launch a corruption investigation against him. In his latest comments to the press, mr trump did not deny the reports, saying it doesnt matter what i discuss. David willis in washington has been unpacking the background to the story. What this row centres on is a telephone conversation which clearly took place during the summer between President Trump and the new leader of the ukraine, and it has been reported that on a number of occasions, possibly as many as eight occasions, possibly as many as eight occasions during the course of the telephone conversation, mr trump urged Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate the son ofjoe biden, who worked for a ukrainian gas company. Now, today was sacked. Today on twitter, mr trump dismissed the controversy is fake news, calling it a perfectly fine and routine conversation with the ukrainian leader in which nothing was said that was in any way wrong. The us has held off military action, instead, slapping sanctions on Irans Central Bank and its sovereign wealth fund. Its also sending additional troops to defend saudi arabia. At a press Conference Today in the saudi capital, the minister of state welcomed this move. In addition to the us, weve also had very Strong Military cooperations from a number of other allies, in particular the united kingdom, and i think that the challenges we are facing now call for enhancing Security Cooperation between the kingdom of saudi arabia and its allies and partners. The saudi government has welcomed the deployment of additional us troops to bolster its air defences. Now is the time, said the minister, for his country to work more closely with the us and britain. Iran, he said, was to blame for all the recent missile attacks on his country. 0nly days ago, President Trump said the us was locked and loaded, but the saudis called for restraint, and washingtons measures appeared defensive. But with tensions high, it may not take much to change the president s mind. Frank gardner, bbc news, riyadh. But the police warned there could be violence unless todays parades were allowed to go ahead. 0ur correspondent niall 0gallagher reports. A day in the sun for glasgows loyalists, or an act of intimidation against scotlands Irish Catholic minority . Parades by the orange 0rder minority . Parades by the orange order and other protestant marching groups ina order and other protestant marching groups in a long running contested tradition. Much is like this have long been tolerated here, gradually accepted long been tolerated here, gradually a cce pted by long been tolerated here, gradually accepted by many as a fact of life in scotlands largest city, after writing on the streets the council put a stop to parades last weekend, but after the police want there could be violence on this todays march went ahead, they said they we re march went ahead, they said they were put in an impossible position. Riot police, including mounted offices underdog units were deployed, after several hundred loyalist protesters disrupted an irish republican march here last month. These scenes led the council to act. A protest followed and they decided they had no choice to much and continue. Each margin needs to be considered on its merits. And in this case, the first people we consult with the police. We had a really difficult conversation with them around about which of the two options but isnt themselves here are more likely to keep people safe. Govan is out in force to celebrate something that we do every year, which they are trying to take away from us. But you can see the support. The police were everywhere today. No statement, they said the parades, over 1000 marchers, today. No statement, they said the parades, over1000 marchers, passed off without incident. As far as im concerned, i am off without incident. As far as im concerned, iam not off without incident. As far as im concerned, i am not a bigot. Off without incident. As far as im concerned, iam not a bigot. Iam definitely not anti catholic. Concerned, iam not a bigot. Iam definitely not anticatholic. They insist on playing songs which have clearly anti catholic words, or telling the Irish Community to go home because the famine is over. This is an r that an organisation which is inherently, structurally, culturally anti catholic, and there is no question about that. The roots of this tension run deep. In the zist of this tension run deep. In the 21st century, scotland still struggles with its history. A much that high until next spring or summer. A much more that high until next spring or summer. A much more a autumnalfield to the weather in the week ahead. Low pressure tending to dominate and weather fronts working on from the west. We have a cold front as we move into sunday, that will bring more heavy and persistent rain gradually north and east, perhaps the odd rumble of thunder with that as well. Ahead of it there will be some showers, also pushing north and east. Some of those could be quite sharp.
