The perception of bamboo in asia over the past few hundred years until today has been quite low. It is considered a very humble and impermanent Building Material because it would be eaten by insects if not properly treated but if you treat it properly, it is protected from the rain and uvf sun. This is the founder of the architectural and design firm which has pioneered the use of bamboo in new and ambitious constructions. The flexibility of bamboo is critical also because in earthquake prone situations, the bamboo structure will kind of dance and bend long before it cracks under any pressure. While the team work to change perceptions about bamboo and its use in construction in indonesia, in the capital of japan, entrepreneurs are trying to challenge ideas about the materials we use and the longevity. At this cafe, people are learning how to repair electronics instead of throwing them out and in just a few hours, mobile phones, chargers and radios are being saved from the rubbish. Drilling kilometre long sediment and rock cores in water thousands of metres deep is uncovering vital information, hidden within hundreds of metres within core are microscopic treasures. The continent scale ice sheet has grown and shrank over millions of years but as a way to determine when that has happened, you need a time machine or a record of how it has behaved in the past. 0ur sedimentary deposits and our drill core provide that time machine but in order to determine the exact age, we use tiny microscopic fossils made of glass, and these organisms give us a key to understanding these past records. These are known as diatom is. Diatom is our photosynthetic algae that live everywhere around a planet in all watery environments. They are very small, typically on the order of 50 microns when one micron is one 1000th of a millimetre, very small and you need a microscope to study them.
