Its saturday, the 10th of august. Our top story the Energy Watchdog has demanded an urgent report from National Grid, after yesterdays massive power cut which affected nearly a Million People in england and wales. 0fgem has warned it could take enforcement action following the blackouts, which caused huge disruption to the rail network and cut electricity to hundreds of thousands of homes. Some rail passengers were stuck on trains until the early hours of the morning, as andy moore reports. Darkness at clapham station. The lights went out, the display boards died, even the ticket machines were com pletely died, even the ticket machines were completely dead. After four hours on a train outside saint pancras, this passenger was glad to see help arrived. The people on board were offloaded and escorted to a nearby station where Water Bottles were waiting. 0thers werent so lucky. This was the message for travellers stuck on a train that finally got into kings cross just before two oclock in the morning. They tried to provide taxis but the weight was about a0 minutes. Which meant i wouldnt have got home until even later, so i would have had to pay out of pocket again for an uber, which cost me £a0. Out of pocket again for an uber, which cost me £40. National grid has given Little Details about what caused the power cuts, but Industry Experts say that out for 50 8pm the gas fired plant at Little Barford failed. Two minutes later, the hornsey offshore wind farm also disconnected from the grid. There we re disconnected from the grid. There were still problems on the trains hours after power was restored to the million or so homes that lost their electricity. It was about a 596 loss of power over about 90 minutes. Thats what happened. So why dont led to the heart of the National Transport infrastructure being closed down is a big question that the grid have to address. Why that led to. The regulator, 0fgem, has asked for an urgent report about what went wrong, and enforcement action, including fines, could follow. Andys outside kings cross station, which saw some of the worst disruption for passengers yesterday. Andy, are things back to normal there . It is certainly better this morning. If you had been here last night you would have seen hundreds of people on the concourse youre trying to get on board trains, and the station actually closed to stop any more crowds getting in. The lines are open again, and the power has been restored, as far as we are aware all of those trains that were stuck have been cleared. But it was a problem that lasted into the early hours of the morning. Something like eight hours after the initial power failure. So those trains didnt start up again immediately when the power came back on. A lot of them had to have specialist engineers to get to them, to restart them. And that has a knock on effect. So it means that trains are in the wrong places, the drivers were stuck on the trains longer than passengers, so they will not be starting their shifts fresh and bright this morning. So that stock displacement is what the Train Companies talk about when they mean the trains are in the wrong places, that means there will be delays here at kings cross and st pancras until at least midday. Some of the cancellations here, the 620 a. M. Newcastle to edinburgh, the 6 30am newcastle to kings cross, 7 06am kings cross to york. So some continuing problems, especially on the lines north of here up to bedford, up to cambridge, up here up to bedford, up to cambridge, up to peterborough, and that is before we get any problems with the fierce weather, which could also mean delays, cancellations and speed restrictions. Charlie. Andy, thanks very much. Keep us up dated through the morning. The mother of the missing teenager nora quoirin whos gone missing on holiday in malaysia almost a week ago, has thanked search teams and made a fresh plea for information. Yes, noras mother gave that statement earlier today, just up that statement earlier today, just up here, the resort, head of the seventh day of search and rescue efforts. And in the for nora. She said that we hope you can find nora. And in the local language she said thank you, at the end. So far nothing has been discovered, no new details. Yesterday there was some talk about footprints being found, but the police said in a press conference that was not anything connected with nora. So a lot of frustration yesterday, and we are hoping for better news today. Indeed. Thank you, howard. Along with saffy and luca, they are in gaming class. Using specially adapted and positioned switches and buttons, they are playing together, something they will be doing a lot more of in future. Soon, gaming will be an official part of the school plasma curriculum, and taught alongside more traditional subjects. More interesting and more fun. I have learned a lot. Saffy uses a special computer to communicate. I feel good because it is nice. Using gaming as a tool for learning is not new, but this is gaming being taught for gamings sake, something that experts tell us has never happened before. This could be something risky in classrooms up and the uk one day. Certainly if the teachers here have their way. Using gaming in the classroom, they say, has boosted their pupils confidence, teamwork and communication skills in ways they have never seen before. Thats it we are nearly there. But shouldnt school be all about learning, not playing . That is a question we asked the man behind the idea. This is very much about learning, it is about learning the things that give you access to the curriculum, learning to social skills, the resilience, you know, losing and winning at all of those things that actually have a huge impact on the rest of your life. 0nly last year to the first off the shelf controller designed especially for disabled players go on sale, making setting up these classes much easier. Teachers here are now hoping that these students will not be the only ones to benefit from the learning possibilities of gaming class. Do you prefer playing games in class to your other types of glasses . Classes. Yeah really interesting seeing how that works. That was Steffan Powell reporting. The thing i was just going to draw your attention to was, we were up at the Edinburgh Festival of course, this week, which celebrates all forms of performers, comedy included, and veteran performer Nicholas Parsons, i think it is ok to say that, such a lovely man, 95 yea rs to say that, such a lovely man, 95 years old, sadly has been taken to hospital this week. He was due to do a number of appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe, a number of appearances at the edinburghfringe, and a number of appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe, and it is one of those things, one of the highlights, you know, Nicholas Parsons at Edinburgh Fringe doing one of his shows. I have never seen him, i have never been. He does a live show, he is 95. When you look through the detail of his career, he has been on the panel show just to detail of his career, he has been on the panel showjust to minute, which many people will many people been the panel showjust to minute, which many people been very fond of, he has been doing that show for 52 yea rs. Has been doing that show for 52 years. This is only the second time this week he has missed any recording of the show. Hear so sharp and so funny. We wish him the best because he is an amazing man. You will see on some of the pages, lots of weather stories, rain and wind. We saw the disruption as well on the Rail Networks stop matt, youre looking at it and is that a weathervane . It is a windsock. Thats it. Just to give you an idea. Its not the ideal summer saturday. A very good morning. Some lively gusts through the night. 8a Miles Per Hour on the while of white. Across england and wales during the past hour or so, gusting over 70 Miles Per Hour over those coasts of the isle of wight. The culprit, a deep area of low pressure. Its on the southern edge where we are seeing it, so that england and wales where we will see the strongest of the wind gust. A0, 50, 60 Miles Per Hour. Not quite as strong as you would see during autumn and winter but we are in the middle of summer. An impact on some travel plans across the country. Plenty of showers around. They will continue to work their way northwards. Either we could see those showers turned slow moving, heavy and thundery later on which would cause minor flooding later on. Wins should pick up flooding later on. Wins should pick up in the hebrides. Elsewhere across scotland, lighter winds and slow moving thunderstorms. But the black winter, across parts of wales in southern england, showers becoming a little less numerous compared with what they are at the moment. We saw 28 degrees almost yesterday. Today, hires around 21, 22, 23 at the very top. Temperatures will drop a bit further into tomorrow. Pushing into north wales, maybe into the north west midlands, lots of showers across parts of scotla nd lots of showers across parts of scotland and northern ireland, starting to feel a bit cooler here, temperatures into the mid teens. Elise tomorrow, knowing there as as today. Brightest of all, lots of cloud elsewhere, showers parts of wales, and the final North Queensland will see some of the wettest weather related to expect later on so temperatures across scotla nd later on so temperatures across scotland and northern ireland, mid teens tomorrow. Temperatures in the sunshine and 21 or 22. Just to give you a quick sneaky peak into next week. If you are on holiday at the moment, rain here and there stop perhaps more of note other temperatures. Sticking in the teens through this week. Maybe the low 20s at the highest. A rather cool week of weather ahead. More throughout the morning. Now on breakfast its time for the film review with ben brown andjames king. Hello there, welcome to the film review on bbc news. Taking us through this weeks cinema releases is james king. What do you have for us this week . Playmobil the movie is an animated musical, but will it have us dancing in the dark of the cinema . We go back to the glory days of hitchcock, bergman and grant with the reissued thriller notorious. And, yes, ive been using Bruce Springsteen song titles because blinded by the light is out. Its the story of one boys passion for the boss. Lets start off, then, with playmobil the movie. Who is this aimed at . Very good question. Its aimed young. I think that was the big surprised for me. We are quite used to family film now that have several layers to them, several levels to them. 0bviously children are to be taken to these films by their parents. This one aimed squarely at the under tens. Theres not really anything there for the older folk. In the wake of the lego movie and its sequel, brands like playmobil were going to be looking to get into the movie world. This actually starts out as a live action film about a brother and sister who then get magically transported to the playmobil world, this animated world of small plastic figures. They get lost, they have to find one another again. When they are there, they are helped by different characters. There are vikings in this, there are cowboys, their unicorns and there is a super spy called rex dasher. Voiced by daniel radcliffe. Here he is in action. Rex is brilliant, suave, a master of disguise. And did i mention rogueishly handsome . Surprise rex dasher at your service. I love that trick never gets old word of advice. In this town, nothing is what it seems. My enemies have eyes and ears everywhere. This way after me this onesjust garbage. It is lacking a little bit, i think, in that wit that we got used to with the lego movies, or with pixar movies, things like that. Also, and i know ultimately its just a film about small plastic figures aimed at children. It doesnt make any sense, though. The internal logic of this film is all over the place so what i would say is this. Its not great. The songs are there to paper over some of the cracks. Theyre fine. If you have children, and its of course the summer holidays, and theyve seen toy story a, angry birds 2, all the other films out at the moment, then perhaps this will entertain them. I always look at these films and think longevity. Is this actually going be something we are going to go back to a lot in the years to come . Itjust doesnt have that charm, that craftsmanship about it that you get in the lego movies or you get any pixar films, the Studio Ghibli films from japan, anything like that. Will probably do for the summer. I think people will forget about it very quickly. Well, lets go to something that is much, much older, notorious, a reissue of the great hitchcock movie. Which is part of the hollywood sort of glory days. Aboslutely, the golden era. Ingrid bergman and cary grant star. She is sent down to rio, actually, on an Undercover Mission to try and track down some nazis down there who are hiding out down there. He is her american handler and quite a conflict romance follows. Because it is a restoration, you can kind of see it there in the clip, it looks absolutely sparkling. It looks as if it was made just yesterday, rather than i9a6. And the chemistry is so great between. Look at cary grant there. That is what movie stars should look like. The chemistry is great. He is of course suave and sophisticated, but playing a more withdrawn character than usual. Ingrid bergman just almost stealng the show, actually, as this wild playgirl, and hitchcocks direction. Youre going to see some familiar hitchcock things in there, the camera moves, the classic characters. The whole film is quite intimate. I think hitchcock wanted to make it simple. He would go on to things like north by northwest, which were epic. This is more simple, much more focused. And i really love the precision of it. I watch ited again and was just so pleasantly surprised by how precise and how neat the whole thing is. It really is him working at the peak of his powers. How do you think it ranks amongst all the hitchcock movies . I think its one that actually perhaps we dont talk about quite so much because it is an espionage thriller. It is not the psychological thriller or quite so obviously a psychological thriller like psycho. But when you watch it again, the performances are flawless and i think the direction is flawless as well. So romantic. Some great kissing scenes in this. Some of the most famous kissing scenes in hollywood history. I would love to see that. Looking forward to seeing that once again. Its been ages since i saw that movie. Now, blinded by the light. This is by the director of bend it like beckham, who we were interviewing in here a couple of weeks ago. Gurinder chadha, yeah. And it is based on a true story, by the journalist sarfraz manzoor, about him growing up in the 805, in luton, part of a british pakistani family but loving the music of Bruce Springsteen. His family dont really appreciate this. Some of his friends at school dont appreciate this. There is something about bruce, this 30 something rocker from jersey, a long way from luton, that appeals to him. Viveik kalras stars in this. Lets have a look. Music born to run by Bruce Springsteen in the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American Dream at night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines sprung from cages out on highway 9 chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin out over the line 0h baby, this town rips the bones from your back its a death trap, its a suicide rap we gotta get out while were young cos tramps like us baby, we were born to run. Hey, get out of here its a kind of a feel good movie. And she was telling us when we were interviewing her about the film, actually, thats she and sarfraz manzoor, whose memoir who it is based on, went up to Bruce Springsteen on the red carpet and jointly asked, could they use his music . And he said yes. Yes, i think that was the way this film got made. Thats how they did it. Theyjust had to kind of pounce on him. But hes been very supportive of it since and has been at a premiere in america and things like that. Because his music is throughout the film. It sent me home to listen to Bruce Springsteen songs. That is one of the many things it will do. You want to go and scream some Bruce Springsteen songs after watching the film. Because the music of moment of the best moments, i think, for me. It really captures the power of his songs and why they have universal appeal, because of their lyrics, because he writes about working class people, people with big dreams, people who live out in the suburbs, and that can appeal to lots of people around the world. It does really capture the power of the music. Some of thejokes, i think i was a bit less convinced by the lighter moments, but certainly the serious moments in this film. Some good scenes between father and son as well, very powerful. Serious moments, moments where it immerses itself in the music, really strong. She said she wanted to highlight the kind of racism that there was at that time in the uk. You wouldnt necessarily think that Bruce Springsteen songs from the 80s would do that. The lyrics, sometimes the lyrics are on the screen, not as subtitles but quite cleverly blended into the background in the movie. You really think about it, you understand why this guy would so associate with Bruce Springsteen music. Best out . Holiday. A danish film. Raised some eyebrows, understandably. A startling film at times, quite a stark film at times, about a young woman whos dating a drug dealer. She goes to turkey, on holiday with him to a beach side resort. And hes quite possessive, she meets some other people there. She makes some new friends and that really affects their relationship. And really what it is, it is a film about power struggles, about power games, mind games, as well as this young woman growing up and working out who she is. There are some very alarming moments in it. There are some upsetting moments in it. It certainly requires a lot of viewing for viewers. You dontjust sit back and watch it and dont think about it. You have to take about this movie. You will want to discuss it afterwards. That is why i liked it, though. It does shock, it does surprise, and it is unconventional. And i think isabella has a great future in the european arthouse world, because this is a very strong debut from her. Best streaming . For the birds. This is about a hoarder. She is called kathy murphy, lives in upstate new york. She hoards birds chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks. Has about 200 of them inside and outside. Any reason why . That is what the film explores. At first you thing its just, but actually it explores her psychologically. And it gets to explore her relationship with her husband it is quite an unconventional relationship and what is going on in her head. Dont think it is just a film about a woman who hoards chickens. Actually, t becomes much broader and really delves into this marriage and becomes rather inspiring, actually. It certainly is a surprising film. That is why i wanted to recommend it, because you think it is about one thing. As the film goes on, it blossoms into something much different. Sounds interesting. James, thank you very much indeed. Pleasure. Thats it for this week, though. Thanks for watching and its goodbye from both of us. Hello, this is breakfast with Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty. Good morning. Quite tricky waters, i think. 0na will be. Quite tricky waters, i think. On a bay that is very close to the pacific, so you get some pretty choppy conditions out there, which i think the sailors will love, and which i am sure will make for great viewing. All sorts of problems because of the weather here this week, all kinds of events cancelled. Chppy, week, all kinds of events cancelled. Choppy, very choppy waters there. Thanks very much, john. We are going to talk about motorsport right now. At the age of 15, Nabila Tejpar got her first rally car. Motor sport is in her blood, shes following in her grandfather and fathers footsteps. It is this dynasty thing, isnt it . All sorts of dynasties in sport. Michael schumachers son is now racing. So, this is a young lady whose grandfather and father have done the same thing. Inevitable, isnt it . Shes now aiming for european and world titles, and mikes been to meet her. The crowds have flocked here to the goodwood festival speed in west sussex to see some of the wells top rally drivers in action. Among them now as a woman from britain who is blazing a trail more women into the sport. Nabila tejpar is the reigning british ladies champion, driving on the edge with well such and passed at 80 miles an hour. Lots of people assume rally drivers are crazy. Maybe you do have to somewhat ba, you know, have a screw loose in your head. Nothing beats the adrenaline coming off the stage feeling youve done your absolute best. It would be great to see more women involved. It doesnt matter about your gender. I think motorsport is one of those places where you can be in the same Playing Field as men. Nabila tejpar is keeping the sport and her family. Her dad and grandad were both rally drivers. I am actually really scared to sit with her because i think she drives too fast for me, because she is still my baby girl, you know . In respect of diversity as well, i think that is really awesome. It is few and far between that you would see an asian woman, every time i talk to my friends, what does your daughter do . My daughter drives a rally car. Excuse me . 54, left along. Iam rally car. Excuse me . 54, left along. I am learning the language of rallying because it is a team sport and every driver needs a codriver who reads the so called pace notes, because you are going at such speed, and nabila needs instructions. Thats exactly it. Are you really going to listen to me . |j thats exactly it. Are you really going to listen to me . I think so the codriver is very important and what we do with the pace notes before the rally is probably one of the most important things. We need to make sure we have these rights so that when we are attacking these stages, which we have really only seen twice. The final bit of kit on. I will make sure i have not had a big lunch or breakfast because i do get carsick as a passenger. Trying to read notes at the same time to help nabila take it to another level. With my stomach left at the start, i could hardly see over the dashboard. 15 left go along, left. Lots of trees, lots of trees. And at such speed, any pace note instructions to nabila were a little sketchy. By the time i was telling her about a right or left turn, we were already through it, in a blur of trees and hay bales. The fa ct a blur of trees and hay bales. The fact that she is driving us around on instinct regardless is why she is causing such a stir. It is refreshing for the spot to have the females there as well. They are good drivers, there is no reason why they cant beat the guys. Short, right down and anyone who finds that reading while on a winding car journey makes them queasy will surely empathise with how i was soon feeling. These pace notes are scrunched up, i was so tense, shouting gibberish at you. Just a tribute to your amazing driving skills. No wonder you are taking the sport by storm. You are so calm m is my happy place. Yeah, no. But in particular as a stage is very steep. See, i know he gives it a go, but i am not sure i would want him as my codriver. What about mount . Well, much as a responsible young man. He is listening. I know he is im trying to Say Something nice. I think you would be excellent. Are there will thats the nicest thing youve said so far today. And our whole relationship. Anyway, a very good morning. It doesnt feel like much today. Some disruptive weather around. Wins touching 8a Miles Per Hour. Not farfrom weather around. Stand by, alexandra palace. Switch out, regions, switch out. And cut to palace. This is alexandra palace, the birthplace of television. 0n 2 november 1936, the worlds first regular High DefinitionPublic Television service was broadcast from there. Tvjoined radio and the printed word in bringing us entertainment and information, to bring us together and broaden our minds. But these days, information has another way of getting out. Social media has given us all the power to say whatever we want and show whatever we want, and that has caused several governments big problems. Some countries like china, iran and saudi arabia block news and discussions about topics they dont want their people to hear about. But many more countries will sporadically block social media sites, slow down internet speeds or even switch off net access altogether to try and stifle unrest and dissent at sensitive times. And the country that shuts down net access the most is . India. And by far, the bulk of those shutdowns are in the disputed himalayan region of kashmir. This week, the Indian Government removed the special status of the part of the region that it administers. It was an unprecedented move thats seen schools closed, demos banned, leaders arrested and, of course, the internet shut down. A couple of weeks ago, david reid went to kashmir to find out more about the regular shutdowns that were happening there. As it turned out, he was one of the last foreign journalists to be allowed in. Kashmir might look peaceful it isnt. Authorities here are fighting a long running insurgency. Many kashmiris and others say india is an occupier. Almost 50,000 have died in decades of violence. Even before this weeks clampdown, authorities regularly shut down the mobile internet as i found during a recent visit. Our business is an Online Food Delivery service, its the first Online Delivery Service start up in kashmir. More than a0 times this year, kashmirs mobile internet has been cut off or throttled back, not great for sales of chicken wraps or spicy mutton curry. What do you do when the internet is off . Every time we have to call our customers, our data base customers and we try to send an smss that we are serviceable. Last time, we had pamphlets and we distributed them to colleges and schools. Its going back to the 19505 and working without internet and internet is a very important part of your life right now. Normally its only the mobile internet cut off, not domestic broadband. Why dont you just use broadband . Its just too expensive. Broadband is more expensive than ag and everyone cant afford a connection at home. The measure is unpopular and there are suspicions its less about security than just stifling dissent. They are claiming we are the largest democracy in the world, but its not a democracy because you cant suppress the voice of dissent in a democratic system. I headed over to speak to kashmirs police. Interestingly, their internet policy seems less about foiling militant operations, but more about preventing propaganda and rumour. We are here fighting a proxy war. We see a lot of content from our neighbourhood coming here and trying to create a propaganda which is absolutely not correct and at times, that leads to a serious law and order problem. Kashmiris joke that the internet is just a switch on some bureaucrats desk and there is a feeling that its all a bit too easy. There is no transparency. Some shutdowns in india are frivolous. According to this tracker run by a delhi based ngo, the mobile internet was cut off 30 times in rajasthan last year. No insurgency there. And at least four of those were to prevent cheating in Police Recruitment exams. Authorities say shutdowns are signed off by magistrates and audited. We have to take their word for it. The audits are secret. 0ur tracker is built around exposing reality of the internet shutdowns, the quantum of internet shutdowns in india. What we demand of the government is transparency. There is no government published data on shutdowns. But we also have to rely on citizens reportage. India is probably one of the strongest democracies to utilise this policy, which is problematic. India cuts of the internet more than any other country. Ok, the population here is enormous and much of the time, indias internet has been pretty open. Select censorship, but without a china style content firewall. That said, critics contend that countries are taking indias lead, cutting off comms in a crisis. By the way, they also say shutdowns actually increase violence. What you are doing, if anything, in curtailing access to the internet is disallowing people the ability to organise, again, Peaceful Demonstrations which are well within the confines of the law. It creates a disrupted communication environment which potentially induces more chaos, more violence. This weeks clampdown has meant a complete Communications Blackout internet, phone, tv. The uns special rapporteur has called it draconian and kashmir has been gagged, cut off from the rest of the world. The lion king opening theme plays. The idea of embracing something that took what technology has to offer to create a photo real version of this story, as told through the eyes of what would feel like a documentary, a live action documentary crew, was an exciting prospect for us. Disney refers to this as a live action film, which is a bit misleading, but i think it is tonally correct, because we did use those techniques, and hopefully it does feel like something that was actually photographed, even though every shot with the exception of one, actually, every shot in the film is completely computer generated. And every performance is animated. We built it using tools to create essentially a completely digital 3d environment, and then you have 3d digital animals that are in that environment, and thats how you would do the final render of it, whether it was a marvel movie or whether it was a film like this. But since we already have those assets we could bring that into this consumer facing vr system, using in this case the unity game engine, and because we now have this environment and vr, we can have people enter into the digital set and be able walk around and look at it as though we were on a scout, and it allowed me to hire someone like caleb deschanel, who is a great cinematographer, who ive known for a long time and wanted to work with, but had no background in visual effects and we made it user friendly, so he could walk around with us, with the production designer, the visual effects supervisor and the director, look at the set, say, 0k, we should put the camera here, lets see the lion rehearse the scene, and the ad would hit the button and run the animation cycle, we would watch like you would in a regular set, you think about where he wants the light, we could move the sun if we had to, move some trees around, so we had a full live action film crew in vr, operating camera equipment as though it were a live action set. But we always tried to limit ourselves in what you could achieve in real life, and that is what gave it the aesthetic that people are reacting so well too. All right, let me see what we are dealing with here. Its a lion phase one is this whole virtual shoot, where we do rough animation, we build rough versions of the sets, they look like rough video games, and you put it together, and you shoot every shot, and now you have a complete edit of the whole movie with dialogue and temporary music, and you really have every shot. It is notjust a study, these are choices that jon and caleb and the other filmmakers were putting into place. Every one of those shots is like a 3d file, a data file, that comes here to mpc london and we have a Layout Department that works out all the space and all, and imports all those cameras and lines it up and makes sure the scene is going to work. Animation department jumps right on the characters and starts creating the super delicate, fine performances. The environments and sets department creates the entire african savannah, painstakingly making literally thousands of plants and trees and rocks. Lifes not fair. Is it, my little friend . And the Lighting Department and the simulation departments which add the movement of the water and the movement of the fur, they all come in and complete the realism, so the world, the character in the world, the way the light works off those materials, the way every blade of grass is moving, everything has to be just right. Were here everyone, calm down, we are here. The backup has arrived at its core, cinema comes from the tradition of illusion, and melies, and using all of these tools to make the audience believe they are seeing something that they are not. And that is part of the delight, i think, of something that is effects driven, especially if there is a wonderful story behind it to carry it. You must take your place. In the circle of life.
