Tell us what you think just use the hashtag bbcthebriefing. The United States is reeling from two Mass Shootings in less than 2a hours. A gun attack which left 20 people dead in the texas city of el paso, is being described as domestic terrorism by police. In a separate shooting on sunday, nine people were killed by a gunman in dayton, ohio the motive behind that attack remains unclear. President trump says hate has no place in america. But his opponents say his anti immigrant rhetoric and refusal to condemn White Nationalism, is part of the problem. Hes promised to make a longer statement on monday at the white house. Heres our north american correspondent peter bowes. Two Mass Shootings in one weekend. America is once again struggling with its response to gun violence. In el paso, a predominantly hispanic city on the texas border with mexico, 20 people were murdered when the gunmen opened fire at a shopping mall. The suspect, 21 year old patrick is in custody. Is believed to have posted an online document calling the attack a response to the hispanic invasion of texas. 0fficials hispanic invasion of texas. Officials say the attack on saturday shoppers is being viewed as domestic terrorism and the authorities are considering bringing hate crime charges. We are conducting a methodical investigation but with a view towards bringing federal hate crime charges and federal firearms charges which carry a penalty of death. We are treating it as a domestic terrorism case. And we will domestic terrorism case. And we will do what we do to terrorist in this country, deliver swift and certain justice. Six mexican nationals are known to have died in the shooting. Mexican Officials Say they plan to sue legal action under International Law to protect mexican and Mexican American communities in the United States. It could lead, according to the Mexican Foreign minister, to the extradition of the person responsible for the shooting. In dayton ohio, nine people died when a student fired into a cloud outside a busy bar in the early hours of sunday. He was shot damp by police who were on the scene within seconds. The gunmen, whose motives are not known, has been named as 24 year old connor betts. This 22 year old starts to meghan is among those who died. As the mayor, this is a day we all dread happening and what is very sad is that i have gotten messages from cities across the country, so many of us have gone through it. Assault style weapons we re through it. Assault style weapons were used in both attacks. Little reaction to the shootings has been swift to tick several senior democrats blamed President Trump, in pa rt democrats blamed President Trump, in part because of the angry rhetoric he has used in the debate over immigration and in clashes with ethnic minority members of congress. Anybody who begins a campaign for the presidency by calling Mexican American immigrants rapists and criminals, anyone who as president describes Asylum Seekers at the Us Mexico Border as an infestation or invasion or animals, anyone who describes those who do not match the majority of this country is somehow inherently dangerous or defective so is the kind of fear, the kind of reaction that we saw in el paso. Democrats have cold for the senate to meet in an emergency session to pass and control legislation. As the president left the newjersey golf clu b president left the newjersey golf club where he spent the weekend, he praised the response of loren enforcement officials in both cities and promised action to stop Mass Shootings. I just and promised action to stop Mass Shootings. Ijust want and promised action to stop Mass Shootings. I just want to say that these are the two incredible places. We love the people. Hate has no place in our country. And we will ta ke place in our country. And we will take care of it. Stand by me. Mr trump said he will make another statement on monday but gave no clue about how he would address the decades old problem of gun violence. Cbs correspondent hilary lane is in el paso. We had some detail there about the ongoing investigation, domestic terrorism, hate crime charges, can you tell us any more . We know that hearing el paso prosecutors have said they are considering bringing the Death Penalty against the suspect, that is actually what they wa nt to suspect, that is actually what they want to do. Mystic terrorism, they say this suspect targeted to specific warmup behind me because there is a large hispanic population in this town in el paso, we are close to the Mexican Border and this isa close to the Mexican Border and this is a place where many people cross the border to come shopping. He had a manifesto where he specifically spoke about the fact that he did not like what he called an hispanic invasion of texas and specifically targeted this area. Prosecutors say therefore the Death Penalty would be serving justice in this case. In terms of President Trumps response of we heard him saying that there would be action, he spoke some more about that later today. What can we expect from the president , do you think . We believe that he will condemn hateful of terror like this one. Now here is where the issue is. You have democrat, senators such as Chuck Schumer who Want Congress to come back from recess to pass meaningful legislation and gun reform. Republicans have been slow to act, going back to 19 99 when we have the columbine shooting. Congress was unable to pass major legislation after the sandy hook shooting where more than a dozen tiny children were shot. So people believe President Trump will condemn the axe and say they have no place in america but some democrats say he will not go far enough. Thank you for now. There is a lot more detail on our website and we will discuss it in terms of media response later in our news briefing. Pro democracy activists are disrupting operations at several key metro stations at the start of the working week in hong kong. Theyre hoping to persuade commuters to observe their call for a city wide strike. Their action follows a weekend of demonstrations and clashes with police, as they tried to block Cross Harbour tunnels and paint out traffic lights. This the Hong Kong Government has warned that any large scale stoppage would be economically damaging. A similar strike call last week largely went unheeded. Mariko 0i is in hong kong. How is today progressing and can you tell us what carrie lam had to say earlier . As you said, we heard from the citys chief executive, carrie lam. We have not heard from her in weeks but she somewhat repeated her message, condemning the protesters and offered no concessions and the Hong Kong Government has repeatedly asked people do not participate in todays strike. It is expected to be the biggest in decades, possibly in nearly half a century. Despite the governments call for people to not participate, we are seeing a number of protesters wearing black which has become the uniform, gathering here. This is one of seven locations where we expect some rallies later this afternoon. 0rganisers same that some 14,000 people are expected to participate in the strike as well, as you mentioned we have already started to see some major disruptions to train operators as well as airlines. More than 200 flights have been cancelled. We have a sense of the impact this will have . As we know, these demonstrations have been going on for weeks and weeks. How effective will the action today be . The Hong Kong Government clearly is very worried. Repeating their message that people should not be participating. Because, as you say, the weekend and the protests that have turned violent, that was the ninth weekend in a row and protesters are starting to demand something more than what they initially began with. This all started because of the controversial extradition bill that would have allowed people to be extradited to mainland china. The Hong Kong Government suspended it but protesters want a complete withdrawal of its. They also now wa nt withdrawal of its. They also now want four other things. To stop calling the protesters rioters and also the unconditional release of all protesters who have been arrested as well as universal suffrage, one person one vote. They wa nt to suffrage, one person one vote. They want to elect their own lawmakers and they also want an investigation, and they also want an investigation, an independent investigation into how the police have been handling some of these protests because they are very unhappy with the use of force. But it seems like the protests will take place despite the governments call and it is hard to see how they can come to a happy solution. Thank you very much indeed. Live from hong kong where a general strike is been cold and it is having an impact on travel. Lets talk now about what was supposed to be happening here in london at Heathrow Airport, a planned industrial action at one of the world s busiest airports. The straight action today has been called off the talk will continue throughout today hoping to prevent strike action happening tomorrow. Around 2500 workers are currently in dispute with the airport over pay and various airlines, many of whom have had to adjust or rearrange their plans, it is confusing for people trying to travel from heathrow or into Heathrow Airport. Im joined by eileen burbidge, a partner at passion capital a Technology Venture fund based in london. She is a regular here and it is lovely to see you. So this is Heathrow Airport, not a specific airline, who are in conversation with unions and managers about pay causing chaos. They have been talking about this all summer so there were strikes planned for late july there were strikes planned for late july that were called off. The time to vote on this latest package which did not pass and on friday, the workers decided instead to vote. 2500 were expected to strike today and tomorrow but today was called off, tomorrow is still to be determined and it affected over 170 flights today that were initially cancelled, any of which have been reinstated but customers need to get in touch with their airlines and prospectively find out what the airline is doing. It is confusing because some cancelled flights and others decided to move their flights from heathrow to gatwick. Heathrow airport and gatwick, heathrow in particular, one of the busiest in the world because of where it is, whenever there is strike action quite often summaries the period of time when we seem to get this disruption. In may be a specific airline or the actual airport itself. They do know when to cause chaos, dont they . This is the point. If you are going to go ahead and cause disruption through industrial action, you want to make as great an impact as possible to when i mentioned, you know, that the strikes were planned for today and tomorrow, they were also planned for later this month. The 23rd and 24th. All three sets from the latejuly two now and then in a few weeks time we re two now and then in a few weeks time were all planned the same time, giving fairwarning and were all planned the same time, giving fair warning and there is also an ongoing dispute with ba pilots. They need to give more than two weeks notice if they want industrial action but you are right. The summer, when it will affect the most number of flies, passengers and consumers, families, that is the time when this comes to a head. Thank you for now. Eileen will be back later but also, just to say in just over 15 minutes time in Business Briefing we will have more information on that situation in heathrow. And we will let you know what you need to do if you have a flight what you need to do if you have a flight booked. Lets brief you on some of the other stories making the news a teenager is still being questioned by police on suspicion of attempted murder after a six year old boy was allegedly thrown from a viewing platform at the tate modern art gallery in london. Stay with us on bbc news, still to come the coffin of king tutankhamen leaves its tomb for the first time. The question was do we want to save our people and japanese as well and win the war or whether we want to take a chance on being able to win the war by killing all our young men . The invasion began at two oclock this morning. Mr bush, like most other people was clearly caught by surprise. We call for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all iraqi forces. 100 years old and still full of vigor, vitality and enjoyment of life. No other king or queen in british history has lived so long and the queen mother is said to be quietly very pleased indeed that she has achieved this landmark anniversary. This is a Pivotal Moment for the church as an international movement. The question now is whether the american vote will lead to a split in the anglican community. Youre watching the briefing. 0ur headlines President Trumps under pressure to address the rise in White Nationalism after two Mass Shootings just hours apart. In hong kong, a day of disruption pro democracy protesters urge people to join their general strike. Iran says it has captured an oil tanker and seven sailors it accused of smuggling fuel through the gulf to arab states the third such seizure in recent months. Iranian state television reported that the countrys revolutionary guards detained the tanker, its crew and 700,000 litres of fuel on wednesday. Reged ahmad has the details. Iran claims that this is the latest tanker to be seized by the countrys revolutionary guard. On board, seven sailors from different nationalities. All have been detained. The countrys state tv also stated that there was more than 700,000 litres of fuel, which was being smuggled to some arab countries. This is the latest incident to take place in the gulf, after the us tightened sanctions on irans oil sector back in may. The white house has blamed iran for two separate attacks on oil tankers in the gulf of oman in may and june, an allegation tehran denied. Iran has also shot down a us surveillance drone over the strait of hormuz, again under disputed circumstances. The seizure of ships isnt anything new in this growing dispute. Early last month, uk forces helped authorities in gibraltar seize iranian tanker grace 1, because they believed it was carrying oil to a syrian refinery in breach of eu sanctions. Then, on 13july, the iranian coastguard detained the panama flagged mt riah. Six days later, it also seized the british flagged tanker the stena impero in the strait of hormuz, saying it had collided with a fishing vessel. And, earlier this month, the Us Treasury Department imposed sanctions against Iranian Foreign minister Mohammad Javad zarif, a move that has angered tehran. Translation we believe that this sanction shows the politicians of the white house have to some extent made this a personal issue. This latest incident was said to have taken place on wednesday, and there are reports that the tanker was from iraq, and though the cargo is relatively small, its bound to add to the tensions in the region. Now its time to get all the latest from the bbc sports centre. We start with the golfing news. The womens dish open was won by the japanese player. Manchester city have won the first trophy of the new season in england, beating liverpool on penalties to retain the Community Shield at wembley. City took the first half lead through Raheem Sterling butjoel matip equalised with less than 15 minutes remaining however gabrieljesus scored the winning penalty to hand the premier League Champions a 5 4 win over the european champions in the shootout. I dont know well be like last season two real contenders, liverpool and us, to win the premier league. I think united, with the players they bought, and arsenal as well, and chelsea and tottenham, that they won a lot of the season. So i think there will be many, many contenders this time. But i think liverpool, i think we realise which teams we will face for the rest of the season. England have it all to do if theyre to save the first ashes test against australia in birmingham. Steve smith became just the fifth australian to score a century in both innings of an ashes series when he made 142 in his first test since returning from a ban for his part in the ball tampering scandal in south africa. The 30 year old helped his side to a87 7 declared with england resuming in the coming hours on 13 without loss needing another 385 to win. Its kind of a dream come back and away, to able to score two 100s in a match, in the first ashes test match, in the first ashes test match, its something ive never donein match, its something ive never done in any form of cricket before in my life. So its incredibly special, and special to be able to, i guess, put us in the position that were in now, going into day five. Rafael nadal will be looking to make it five rogers cup titles when he gets his tournament underway in montreal this week. The world number two is also defending champion and hell be taking on either australian alex de minaur or a qualifier. In toronto the women play with two time champion simona halep again in the draw. His side got the new season off to a great start with a 2 1win over kilmarnock. You can get all the latest sports news at our website thats bbc. Com sport. But from me and the rest of the team, that is your monday sport briefing. The gold plated coffin of egypts boy King Tutankhamun has been seen for the first time outside his tomb. This area of showers should clear away, throught the day, and much of england will be dry and bright, with a few light showers in the south and west.
