Situation im going at Whaley Bridge and these areas had as much as two months of rain in a week, but little or no rain today. Many parts of the country dry and enjoying sunshine, with fewer showers in western parts of scotla nd with fewer showers in western parts of scotland then we have seen over the past few days. There is more angry looking crowd in lincolnshire. Some showers are little sharp, feeding in from the north sea. On the map, you can see the extent of the cloud and showers for south east scotland, north east england. Shower clouds bubbling up through parts of the midlands, yorkshire, lincolnshire and towards the home counties. This is where we see the majority of showers. One or two further west, but it looks like it will be dry with pleasant spells of sunshine and light winds, feeling pleasa ntly of sunshine and light winds, feeling pleasantly warm. Temperatures similarto pleasantly warm. Temperatures similar to what we had yesterday, 25 or 26 around hampshire. We have got probably a dry day today for the second day of the test match. Tomorrow if we catch a shower, it will be late in the afternoon towards for a clock. But the a lot of dry weather for the start of the weekend towards for pm. Even showers fade away and we have clearer spells, misty low cloud gcioss clearer spells, misty low cloud across eastern areas and temperatures around 12 14d. Most places have a dry day on saturday. Some sunshine at at times. This band of cloud coming in from the south west bringing showers. Maybe later into the north west of england. But further east, likely to be dry and temperatures again around about the low to mid 20s widely across the uk. There could be wetter weather for the second half of the weekend because this area of low pressure is gambling in from the atlantic. Pushing ahead these weather fronts. It will be northern and Western Areas of the uk more likely to find showers at at times. Maybe even longer spells of rain developing in Northern England and scotla nd developing in Northern England and scotland later in the day. That rain could turn heavy and thundery. Similar temperatures for most of us on sunday but probably dry across the south east of england and east anglia, probably quite warm and muqqy anglia, probably quite warm and muggy, temperatures in london maybe 26 or 27 degrees. But into next week, well, we are dominated by low pressure again which is not good news given how wet it has been, there is more wet weather to come and it will be quite breezy and cool and it will be quite breezy and cool and no showers and showers heavy at at times. That is all from us, have a very good afternoon. Good afternoon. Lunch on a day two of the first ashes test at edgbaston. Joe root has had some luck as he steered england to a promising platform of 71 this morning as they chase down australias 284. Adam is there. Just one wicket this morning, but lots of luck for england. Welcome back to edgbaston, lots of people absorbing some of the sun after a really a re people absorbing some of the sun after a really are absorbing mornings cricket. Not the drama of the opening day, but an absorbing contest nonetheless. As you say, england 71 1 at lunch. Joe root on 11, rory byrne is closing in on his half century. On 41, looking very good indeed. England have had some luck despite the loss of the early wicket, jason roy court by the second slip steve smith. Lets talk to isabel from the telegraph. Jason roy went very early on, not the star wind wanted. It wasnt, but if good ball. And patterson is a fast bowler who has been injured for years, he has come back and bowling with raw pace and aggression. A great morning of te st pace and aggression. A great morning of test cricket unfolding this morning. Lots said about jason roy and his ability to turn his one day cricket skill into test match as well. Absolutely, ithink cricket skill into test match as well. Absolutely, i think Geoffrey Boycott was i rated his dismissal. But Michael Vaughan has said now and again, you get a very good ball, and that one would have done for a numberof that one would have done for a number of players. Good catch, good ball, none looking forjason roy. England getting lucky, we saw nathan lynagh making a half hearted appeal of rory burns, and in hindsight, looked like it would have been out. Then an extraordinary incident with joe root. The ball hit the stumps, the bills did not come off, and he was given out, and it turned out it did hit the stumps. Yesterday, one of the themes was the umpire is making quite a few mistakes. And there was a sense of here we go again, another misinformed decision. But as you said, it was a very woody sound. And in the world cup, this was a big thing. These are proper wood bales, a proper freak occurrence that no other sport can offer. Joe root was lucky, and will it count later . Well see. Lets talk about englands bowlers, because james ant and went off to hospitalfor a scan because james ant and went off to hospital for a scan yesterday. He has been warming up this morning. He may bat if needed later on, what do you make of it . A few confusing signals coming from the england dressing room. He definitely went for the scan yesterday, probably unlikely to have any formal communication today. I think it is quite unlikely we will see him bowl in the second innings. Batting perhaps if required. That certainly looking ahead to the next test and whether jofra archer will looking ahead to the next test and whetherjofra archer will be re included. Whetherjofra archer will be reincluded. Thank you for your time. England 71 1 at lunch, play to resume ina time. England 71 1 at lunch, play to resume in a few minutes. Thank you, adam. And from the womens open golf, plenty of british interest, and at the top of the leaderboard, georgia hall, the defending champion, shot a second round of 69 including four birdies to finish on under six. Meanwhile bronte law produced a storming round to put herself into contention, shes just one shot off the lead on 7 under. And charley hull, whos playing on her home course, has started her round well. This birdie on the second hole leaving herjust two shots off the lead, which is held by americas lizette salas. Thats all the sport for now. Its reported the new Northern Ireland secretary, julian smith, has asked for portraits of the queen to be put back on display inside government buildings at stormont. The portraits had been taken down after a senior Civil Servant was paid £10,000 in compensation after saying it was unfair for him to walk past pictures of her majesty and the duke of edinburgh as he might feel offended. Weve been speaking to our correspondent keith doyle aboutjulian smiths intervention. Well, in Northern Ireland, symbols are hugely significant, be it flags, mules, or as this row illustrates, portraits. There are strict laws and specific laws in Northern Ireland that cover these areas, andindeed employment and equality laws say that no workplace should be intimidating or hostile for any workers, no matter which side of the community that they come from. This whole row came to light when lord mcguinness, the ulster unionist mp, told the house of lords that a senior Civil Servant here at the Northern Ireland office, which is in the grounds here in stormont, received a £10,000 payment for distressed because he had to walk past a picture of the queen throughout his working day. Indeed, nationalists may not see the queen as head of state here. Needless to say, unionist mps have been outraged by this, and have called for some clarification. The secretary of state did not give much clarification on whether pictures have been removed, whether theyve been put back, but the secretary of statejulian smith did tweet a picture of the queen that he said was on his mantelpiece in his private office in belfast. Quite a small photograph of the queen there. Ulster unionist mps say that is not enough, they want more answers to the questions. They are asking where portraits have been taken and they want them put back up. So really, that is where the row is at the moment. The secretary of state did not give much information on that, but he said in a statement the other night that the Northern Ireland office must be open and inclusive for work people to be able to attract people from all parts of the community. So another row over symbols in Northern Ireland. As you say, symbols do have a huge significance given the very sensitive political situation there, but people will think back to the queens very successful visit to ireland, and perhaps be surprised thatjust a picture of the queen could cause this sort of a row. Well, what happens here in Northern Ireland might bemuse people in england, scotland, wales, and the republic of ireland, because things that would seem insignificant elsewhere are hugely significant here. You might remember back to the rows of flagpoles. When the british flag can be flown on official buildings. The lord mayor of belfast some time ago removed a picture of the queen and put a republican poster up there. That also caused a row. This is one of the complex things about life in Northern Ireland. A bitter trade war between americas two allies in asia has escalated, after the japanese government removed south korea from a list of preferred export partners. Those on the so called white list of countries enjoy fewer trading restrictions. Its a move thats infuriated South Koreans. Heres our seoul correspondent laura bicker. This is the level of anger some in south korea feel towards japan. In disgust, this man is destroying his japanese made car, an act of defiance just days after tokyo slapped trade restrictions on seoul. Hes not alone in his fury. The trade spat has prompted thousands of South Koreans to boycott japanese goods. Hundreds of items have been taken off supermarket shelves. Translation japan took action, and as korean citizens, we should act fast as well, so we havent been using any japanese products. Translation we often used to go on vacation to japan, but now we dont. Weve even recently cancelled our trip to japan. This dispute comes after decades of mistrust. When japan occupied south korea from 1910 to 1945, prisons such as this one were used to silence and crush dissent. Around 500 inmates were held here, including women and children. Some of them were tortured. It is a time South Koreans have never forgotten, and more importantly, have never forgiven. Tens of thousands of koreans were forced to work injapanese mines and steel mills without pay during the second world war. They said we were treated as slaves. Japan maintains these issues were resolved by a treaty signed in 1965. But a Supreme Court ruling in seoul decided last year that workers and their families were owed compensation. 96 year old lee chun sik is one of the few survivors from that time. Translation they told us that we would study and learn technologies from japan, but when we went, there was no studying. Just doing a lot of hard manual labour. I had to move heavy steel from one cargo to another. I sweated so much. The company told me to continue to stay in japan and work for them, but i couldnt stay. It was so hot, and hard work. Seoul believes tokyos trade restrictions on essential supplies for its Biggest Industries are a form of targeted retaliation for the court orders. Japan says thats simply not true. But the pain wont just be felt here. It could ripple through global tech supply chains, which may force the us to step in to try to solve this feud before it escalates further. Laura bicker, bbc news, seoul. Its been more than 30 years since the devastating Nuclear Disaster at chernobyl, but families in the region are still suffering the effects of the radiation. This week a group of affected School Children are coming to the derbyshire town of glossop for three weeks of health and wellness activies to help them enjoy the outdoors and learn new skills. Fiona lamdin went to meet them. Right, everyone its pizza snack time everyone around the fire circle wash your hands first this is more thanjust an adventure in the woods. These children are here for a recuperative rest. All are in remission, recovering from cancer, likely to be as a result of chernobyl, the worlds Worst Nuclear Accident when, in 1986, a reactor at the Nuclear Power station in the ukraine exploded, sending a radioactive plume across europe. It happened 33 years ago, but these children still live in radioactive environments in belarus. When there was the accident at chernobyl, the wind was blowing northwards so a lot of contamination fell onto belarus. Although much of it blew across europe, but belarus was the country that got most of the radiation so there are areas of contamination still all over belarus so even though some of the children may live hundreds of miles from the actual chernobyl reactor, theyre still breathing contaminated air and eating contaminated food every day. Were going to now demonstrate how to toast a marshmallow. And thats why, over the last two decades, a charity based in derbyshire has brought over 5,000 children to the uk to give them some respite. Doctors believe that these children spending time here in the fresh air, eating fresh food without contamination, can boost their immune systems for up to two years. So what difference do you notice in the children after theyve been to the uk . Translation after staying in the uk, our children have less colds and infections. Kristinas 12, milanas 9. Its their first time here in the uk. Do you both feel a lot better being here in england . Kristina says that she is enjoying staying here in the uk because she feels more energy, she feels cheerful, more energetic, more healthy. At the end of the summer holiday, these children will have to go back home, but its hoped that this clean air holiday will give these damaged young bodies a boost. Fiona lamdin, bbc news. In a moment, well have all the Business News, but first the headlines on bbc news. The raf are dropping hundreds of tons of sand and gravel onto the damaged Reservoir Dam in Whaley Bridge. The liberal democrats win the brecon and radnorshire by election leaving borisjohnsons government with a working majority of one. Two holiday firms with bookings from more than 50,000 people have ceased trading. In the Business News some disappointing news from the construction sector. Output declined for the third month running injuly, according to the ihs markit cips pm just published. According to the report, this reflects lower volumes of work across the board. Two package holiday firms have collapsed, affecting more than 50,000 travellers. You malvern group, which incorporates manchester based late rooms and york based superbreak mini holidays, known as super break, has ceased trading. A no deal brexit would result in an instant shock to the uk economy, the governor of the bank of england, mark carney, has warned. In an interview with the bbc, the governor said items such as petrol and food would become more expensive if the uk leaves the eu without an agreement. Results out from iag the company that owns Iberian Airways and British Airways and aer lingus. But all the focus is on ba at the moment. Theres a strike in the offing, with the pilots turning down an 11. 5 pay offer over three years. Theres brexit theres always brexit. Theres a fine a record £183 million imposed by the Information Commissioners Office following a major data breach last year, which iag says its going to appeal against. But its recorded profits up at £878 million before exceptional items. And the shares are doing well, too up 5 . David learmount is an aviaition analyst. I dont think we know yet if it though it striker is going ahead. The pilots do not want to strike and British Airways do not want to strike. But the pilots have a mandate. We have already had their members vote. They have a huge mandate of more than 90 voting in favour of the strike. Management knows they have to talk seriously, but that is probably taking place. But really, we do not know whether this will go ahead. It is just unwillingness on both sides to actually do this. 11. 5 over three yea rs. Actually do this. 11. 5 over three years. Whenever i say that to anyone, they go, really, they are turning that down . Yes, it sounds like a fairly good package. The brand new pilots dont earn very much, but the more mature pilots and pretty good wages. Nevertheless, it isa pretty good wages. Nevertheless, it is a massive cost to British Airways. And British Airways pilots, they are among the best, but they do get paid among the best as well. So there has got to be room for negotiation here. What about brexit . Hows that going to affect do you think . Just like everybody else, i dont think they really know. What i think is pretty certain is that neither europe nor britain wants to mess up travel arrangements, either in europes airspace or in britain. And i think there will be things going on more or less as normal to start with, but legally, the complexities of a no deal brexit are absolutely mind bending, which is why people do not know what the results will be in the medium and long term. Things will continue the next day if we get a no deal brexit, but then it might lead to places weve never seen before. 0k, ominous sounding there. What about the finer they are facing, hardly going to be able to appeal it . British airways says they are definitely going to appeal it, and they certainly have the right to do so. I think in the end, they are going to have to pay it, and end, they are going to have to pay it, and i think they know that. Frankly, they are pretty well off at the moment, they can afford to pay it. Ok, the shareholders will have to ta ke it. Ok, the shareholders will have to take a lower dividend, but i think they afford that. One thing about the nature of the business, we are all these challenges facing the company, but it is a very diverse business, with many different aspects in terms of different airlines. So it is pretty well set to survive the kind of bumps we see in the road, or in the air, ahead. Yes, it is very well set up. It has airlines in different places. The two main airlines, British Airways and iberia from a server very different markets, but they complement to the markets. If you look at the returns British Airways is getting on capital, 14 , for an airline, lets say 20 years ago, that would have been absolutely unthinkable, Airlines Just were that would have been absolutely unthinkable, airlinesjust were not making those profits. So yes, it is doing a good job at the moment. Thanks very much indeed. A look a some other business stories now. Royal bank of scotland Just Announced a £1. 7bn dividend after half year profits beat analyst forecasts. This weekends londons o2 arena hosts the fifa eworld cup grand final. Up to 30 Million People are expected to watch competitors play the football video game at some stage this weekend. Mosaad aldossary from saudi arabia is the defending champion. The prize pool is worth 500,000. These are the markets at the moment. That is iag, i promise you. Oil prices moving up 2. 73 . The price of oil there, looking a bit stronger having fallen off yesterday. Look at the euro, the pound down against the euro below one. 10. Still a better way before the lowest its been, but not looking too strong at the moment. We are here and now that President Trump spoke to new Prime Minister borisjohnson trump spoke to new Prime MinisterBoris Johnson yesterday to discuss new areas of cooperation, especially relating to trade. The president has reiterated his strong appreciation for the special relationship between the us and the uk, noted he is looking forward to meeting the Prime Minister at the g7 summit later this month. And the quote from the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman was, china expresses its strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition, and if the us implements the talent measures, they will have to ta ke the talent measures, they will have to take measures to resolute defend the core interests of china and its people. Tariff measures. Now its time for a look at the weather. Hello there. The areas of england that have got flood warnings at the moment have had as much as two months worth of rain injust 7 days, and the situation at Whaley Bridge ongoing with that severe flood warning. Little or no rain falling for this area today, most places will be dry and enjoy some sunshine. But even here in warwick, the cloud is increasing, and theres even one two showers are possible. More cloud continuing to push into south east scotland, north east england, some showers here which willjust drift their way down to the midlands, particularly the east midlands, perhaps all the way into the home counties. One or two showers further west, but fewer showers in scotland, fewer showers in Northern England than we had yesterday, a lot of places will be dry, temperatures in the low to mid 20s. Very pleasant in the sunshine if youve got it, a little bit of sunshine at edgbaston for day two of the ashes, looks like it should really be dry. If we catch a shower tomorrow, it will be late on in the afternoon. Any showers that we have got late this afternoon into the evening will fade away, we are going to have some breaks in the cloud, a little bit of low cloud, a little misty perhaps around some eastern areas. Once again, temperatures down to 12 to 14 celsius. This band of cloud is producing some showery rain, they will brush the south west of england, head towards wales, into Northern Ireland, maybe pick up a few showers in the north west of england as well. Further east has more chance of staying dry, some sunshine around, though it will turn a little bit hazy, highs of around 25, 26 celsius in the south east of england. The second half of the weekend will see more rain in some places, an area of low pressure slowly coming in from the atlantic which will push ahead weather fronts as well. As that showery rain works its way northwards, up towards Northern England, away Northern Ireland and into scotland through the afternoon and evening, that rain could turn heavy and thundery. Temperature is more towards the high 20s. Treasure moving across the country from the beginning of next week, looking like more than enough rain, but there is more to come. Quite breezy, and the cooler side, with some heavy showers. Hello, youre watching afternoon live im martine croxall. Today at two raf crews race to shore up a collapsed dam wall thats put a derbyshire town at risk of flooding. So it could still collapse . The information we have had is that it could still happen.
