Faces jail for contempt of court after filming defendants in a criminal trial and broadcasting the footage on social media. The two conservative Party Leadership candidates, Boris Johnson and jeremy hunt, go head to head again in hustings in darlington. And coming up peter parker heads to europe in spiderman far from home. See what mark kermode thinks of that in the film review. Good evening, its 5 oclock. Our top story a gang running the biggest modern day Slavery Network ever exposed in the uk has been convicted of offences including trafficking, Money Laundering and using people to perform forced labour. Police believe there were up to 400 victims of the organised crime gang, whose members were all originally from poland. A three year Police Investigation uncovered a well organised system which preyed on polish people who were homeless, former prisoners and alcoholics. The victims were forced to carry out manual labour on farms and in factories in the West Midlands for a pittance, earning millions for the criminals. 0ur correspondent, phil mackie, has been following the case at Birmingham Crown court. And we learnt today that this is a problem that is hidden in plain sight. There are cases of this going on almost everywhere in the uk where people are being exploited, forced to work long hours and menialjobs and their wages stolen off them as was the case with these mostly polish men who were traffic to the uk and full still live in appalling accommodation, mostly around West Bromwich. I actually went on one of the First Operations as part of what became known as operation fraud. Backin became known as operation fraud. Back in 2015 to an ordinary terraced house in West Bromwich were men were found to be living in appalling conditions upstairs while a member of the gang were living with his family downstairs. He was jailed for three years today, he got the lower sentence three years today, he got the lower sentence because three years today, he got the lower sentence because he pleaded guilty. The maximum sentence of 11 years went to a man who failed to turn up to court, so he was sentenced in his absence and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. The biggest case of its kind since modern slavery legislation was introduced in the uk, and for the full background to the case, we can get this report. Their victims, some as young as 17, were made to live in rooms like these filthy, often rat infested, with no heating or light. The gang was made up of five men and three women, all from poland. 52 year old ignacy brzezinski, 41 year old Wojciech Nowa kowski and 26 year old jan sadowski were found guilty of modern slavery offences. For the first time, the bbc can report that, in february, five others were convicted of their roles in the conspiracy and have been jailed. Together, they preyed on the vulnerable in poland former prisoners, the homeless, alcoholics. They were promised a wealthy life in britain and were quickly transported from their homeland to the West Midlands, so they didnt have time to change their minds. Translation to be honest, i came here to start a new life, but i didnt know that this new life would start with such really big problems. I couldnt even leave the house to go for a walk. They were following me, spying on me. They were controlling me. More than 90 victims gave evidence during the case, but Police Believe the true number of victims is in the hundreds. They lived in the Black Country and were forced to work in factories and on farms, carrying out manual labour for as little as 50p a day while their masters took the rest of their earnings. West Midlands Police began looking into what was happening four years ago and named their investigation 0peration fort. They would convince the victims, for example, that they were unlawfully in the country, that if they left the house that the traffickers provided for them, that they would be arrested by the police. Sometimes, they were given a debt, so they were told that they owed the traffickers £5,000 and had to work off that debt. So there is a lot of these methods the traffickers would use to make them feel trapped. 0ne slave had his arm broken for complaining, while another was stripped naked in front of others for speaking out. The gang was discovered after charities identified victims. This man works undercover and wants to remain anonymous. Very withdrawn, physically shaken, disorientated. We had victims presenting with black eyes, one victim presented with a broken arm, so his broken arm had re set itself out of alignment. Ripped clothing, emaciated. While the victims suffered, the gang bosses lived an opulent lifestyle, driving lavish cars and buying designer clothes. Over five years, they made at least £2 million. Investigators believe its the largest such prosecution of its kind in europe. Charities are urging the public to keep a lookout for other victims who could be being exploited in similar ways. The charities are urging people to be more vigilant. Talking to police and charities, there are other investigations are ongoing at the moment and potential court cases about to happen over the next year 01 so. About to happen over the next year or so. Thejudge talked about to happen over the next year or so. The judge talked about their degradation. She said they had been full still live at dem life of misery and poverty which robbed them of their dignity and humanity without care or regards for the rights of the individuals affected. We know there are still others connected to this organised gang from poland who are in poland in custody who West Midlands police are hoping to get extradited and brought back here to face justice in birmingham. Ben cooley is the ceo of the modern slavery charity hope forjustice, which helped to first indentify 51 of the victims in this case. Your charity was praised by the church in summing up today. Explain to our viewers a bit more about how you managed to identify some of these people, how you were able to help them. We have been working on this case since 2015, where our Community Outreach workers identified two victims which led to the investigation by West Midlands police of which we have supported with a 51 of the victims through this process. We have not only helped identify them but then through our advocacy, through our support, supported them for the last four years through many hurdles that they have had to go through as victims of modern day slavery in the uk. Are you able to say as well how some of them are doing now because they have been treated appallingly for many years, in some cases . As in the case of victims of modern day slavery, they are heavily traumatised through what has happened to them. You heard about one of the men who had their arms broken by the traffickers. We have heard examples of the squalid conditions they were living in, to the point where there was no electricity, no running water. That level of trauma, we have supported them through the process, our victim advocates, modern slavery advocates, have supported them through that, and many of them are on the road to recovery but it takes time to get over such levels of exploitation. And this particular case was centred around the West Midlands. Would you charities say, if it is happening there, its happening everywhere . We are working on cases every day, modern slavery here in the uk is a growing crime, and reports say there are tens of thousands of victims of modern day slavery. This is a giant step forward in addressing this issue, but more needs to be done. You say more needs to be done. I am really interested in how on earth can any member of the public help her . We hear it said again today, the public should be aware. In what way . People might want to help, but im not sure how any of us would spot someone in such a traumatic situation. There are many signs of victims of modern day slavery. It is true they are hidden in plain sight. It often happens in cash on Hand Industries like car washes and other such things. In this particular case, in decorating. Looking at the conditions of ritual you were considering, these individuals were dishevelled, they were often beaten. But some of the things we should look out for, we have identified victims that have been dropped off in food transit vans out of hours, lights on in factories at 3am, people that dont have access to passports, liberties and freedom are withheld, but i would recommend your viewers to look on our website, to start looking what the science of Human Trafficking and modern stay slavery. In this case, we were reminded that the victims were persuaded that they must never trust the police, they cannot go to the police, they are not to be trusted in this country, so they themselves will not reach out, if i can use that phrase. And if you are a member of the public that goes to a car wash and you are concerned about the man 01 wash and you are concerned about the man or Woman Working there, is the onus then on you to go to the police . Anyone suspects issues of modern day slavery, and they see people in immediate danger, report to the police. This case has happened because of the partnership between West Midlands police and the district, and we have seen this case u nfold district, and we have seen this case unfold because of people feeling confident to report. It is very good to talk to you, thank you so much for your time. The ceo of a charity working in the field of modern day slavery. Tommy robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley lennon, faces prison after being found guilty of contempt of court by high court judges. The former leader of the English Defence league was accused of filming defendants during a Sexual Exploitation trial. He then broadcast the footage on social media. Our home affairs correspondent, dominic casciani, has been following the case at the old bailey. Explain more. It has been a saga, not just a explain more. It has been a saga, notjust a court case, this has been going on since may of last year, when Tommy Robinson, his alter ego, ifi when Tommy Robinson, his alter ego, if i step out of shot, you might see him on the back of this double decker bus. We cant seem at the moment because of his own camera crews around him, so i will put back into shot. To cut a long story short, what he did was he turned up at the trial of men accused of running a sexual grooming gang at Leeds Crown Court last may, and he said he was there to report a case that the Mainstream Media were refusing to report. In actual fact, the Mainstream Media were not there because there was a reporting restriction covering that case to ensure that the jury would not be prejudiced. But he turned up and began to do a Facebook Live to his many began to do a Facebook Live to his ma ny followers. Began to do a Facebook Live to his many followers. He has up to 1 million followers on facebook at the time. 10,000 were watching at the time. 10,000 were watching at the time. And he confronted aggressively the defendants as they went in. He made a series of comments about muslim men who in his view were linked to sexual grooming of women ina linked to sexual grooming of women in a series of scandals across the country. As the video wore on, more concern was raised about what he was doing and he was eventually arrested at the scene and job the same afternoon. The court of appeal initially overturned thatjailing, saying it had been rushed, leading toa saying it had been rushed, leading to a rehearing of the entire case over two days this week, and an hour ago one of the most seniorjudges in the country ruled that he was indeed in contempt of court, a series interference of justice, in contempt of court, a series interference ofjustice, she said. I think he might be talking in a second. We cant quite seem at the moment. So the charge said he committed a contempt of court in three ways, broke reporting restrictions, observing a standard procedure, his lifestream outside Leeds Crown Court was such that the content gave rise to a serious risk of impediment ofjustice because it was harassing the defendants. He said that he has been convicted for what he is rather than what he has done, but thejudge what he is rather than what he has done, but the judge will sentence him next week and it is possible he will go to prison. Thank you. Jaguar land rover is investing hundreds of millions of pounds to build a range of electric vehicles at its Castle Bromwich plant in birmingham. Jlr says the move will help secure the jobs of 2,700 workers. Todays announcement appears to contradict previous warnings by the car company that investment in the uk would be threatened by a no deal brexit. Our business correspondent, theo leggett, reports. The midlands can be a benchmark. Thousands of Jaguar Land Rover employees gathered this morning to hear an announcement which appears to make the future of the Castle Bromwich factory much more secure. Today is the day of electrifying the plant and honouring our people who are going with us to define a new, electrified future, and that we will have a complete shift in production, that we have to transform production in the way that we go now, in the electrified era. 2,500 people work at the plant and at a time when the company is cutting thousands ofjobs elsewhere they at least have cause to celebrate. This is fantastic news, not just for todays workforce here at castle brom, but for the next generation, those that want to come into stable, decent work in a fantastic industry. It is a confidence boost for a world class workforce. We have all been concerned with the changes in the industry and the changes on the rules on the environment which have been put in by the government. It is good news that we have got a good future ahead of us. Are you going to be celebrating tonight . I certainly will be. This production line used to make 150 jaguar cars per week. As you can see, it is now silent. All of this kit will soon be ripped out as the plant prepares for what Jaguar Land Rover describes as the biggest transformation in its history, ready for a brand new electric future. The company is investing nearly £1 billion at Castle Bromwich. Its also building this new battery plant and it will make electric motors in wolverhampton. Its an ambitious strategy, but one which experts say the Company Simply has to make. Electric cars that are genuinely competitive with the internal Combustion Engine are just arriving. But as their cost comes down and their range improves, increasingly, we will switch over. In the next five years, there is going to be a big push towards electric cars, and Car Companies have no choice but to try to get into that. Jaguar land rover is calling on the government to support electric cars as well. It says what is really needed is battery production on a massive scale so that the entire industry can benefit. It is setting its future on the development of these new technologies, which is exactly where the rest of the industry is going. What matters now is that weve got to turn this into a national shift, and making sure that the way to do that is, as i am sure Jaguar Land Rover will say, is getting what they call a gigafactory to make the batteries here in the uk because that really matters for the future. This announcement has come at what has otherwise been a gloomy time for the uk car industry. Thanks to falling sales at home and in key markets abroad as well as the uncertainty of brexit. But at Castle Bromwich, today at least, there was something to smile about. Theo leggett, bbc news, Castle Bromwich. Tonight on bbc news, well be having a wider discussion about this story, talking about the future of electric vehicles in the uk. Do we have the infrastructure in place . Are people ready to switch . And how does the uk compare to other countries production of electric vehicles . You can get in touch with your questions and comments on this by texting 611211, e mailing askthis bbc. Co. Uk, or tweeting your question with the hashtag bbc ask this. The car expert, stuart masson, and founder of electric vehicles 0utlook, roger atkins, will be here to answer them at 8 30pm. The two contenders for the leadership of the conservative party have been taking part in hustings with voters in darlington today. Borisjohnson denied he was ever left out of Intelligence Briefings during his time as foreign secretary. The bbc understands downing street attempted to withhold some secret intelligence from mrjohnson a move that caused concern among Senior Intelligence officials. 0ur Political Correspondent, nick eardley, reports. Do conservatives trust him . Borisjohnson could be in number 10 in three weeks time. But it has emerged the current pm had real concerns about his ability to keep information confidential. Were you blocked from seeing any intelligence when you were foreign secretary, mrjohnson . I said that politics is not a game. The bbc understands there was an attempt to withhold sensitive intelligence when mrjohnson was foreign secretary. Some have suggested it was control freakery from number 10, others that there was nervousness in the intelligence community. But were you aware at the time that perhaps some Sensitive Information was being held back from you . Its not true, and i dont comment on intelligence matters. You deny it altogether . I do. Number 10 says theresa may did trust borisjohnson but it will not comment directly on intelligence. Nor would the other leadership candidate. We do have a rule that we never comment on intelligence matters. Borisjohnsons team says he got all the information he needed as foreign secretary and it is unlikely this will have a major impact on the leadership race. But as conservatives start voting for our next Prime Minister, there are others in the party who have their concerns. This former pm says today that hes backing jeremy hunt. It is fairly evident from my views that i cannot vote for somebody who was part of the Brexit Campaign which misled the country, so i shall offer my vote tojeremy hunt. At the same time, current cabinet ministers are planning to do whatever they can to stop either candidate leaving europe without a deal. Let me quote the speaker of the house of commons, who has said that, if the house of commons is determined to do something, hes quite sure that it will find a way. And we can deliver brexit. Boris johnson and jeremy hunt will both say that leaving with no deal in four months time must be an option. We are facing an existential crisis as a party, and indeed as a political class, if i may say so. Any negotiator has their hand profoundly weakened if the other side think that you cant walk away. But they both know, if it comes to it, getting the numbers for no deal will be tough, particularly in a political age where trust is often in short supply. Nick eardley, bbc news. 0ur Political Correspondent, jessica parker, is at westminster. Very interesting, hearing from john major. He always times his comments on matters very specifically. When former Prime Minister speak out on subjects, a lot of people listen. As nick was referring to there, one of the big issues that has been playing out over the next few weeks of the leadership contest is each candidates willingness to go towards a no till brexit, to what extent they might be able to provoke parliament, and brought mps will do to stop that. No du brexit. We know the mps are against a no deal brexit and john major has been speaking to the programme hard to come expressing his thoughts about how far he thinks fellow mps should go to stop and ideal exit. A no deal exit. Surely, it is incumbent upon you, as a former leader of the conservative party and a former conservative Prime Minister, to say whether, like ken clarke, a former colleague of yours, and dominic grieve, that you believe it would be right, if it comes to it, for conservatives to vote no confidence in a Prime Minister and the government that is committed to a no deal brexit . I think i said earlier, quite clearly, if you have to choose between your country and your party, then you choose your country. That applies in all circumstances with none put to one side. What of the two candidates been saying about their plans for brexit . As nick refer to, both of said the uk needs to be prepared without a deal, if that is what it takes, but borisjohnson said he could not envisage a situation of provoking parliament in order to push through ano parliament in order to push through a no deal exit, although he has not ruled out. Jeremy hunt has ruled out. These issues are being widely discussed. We are at the business end of the conservative leadership contest now. We had a hustings this morning, we have another one tonight, two more tomorrow, and we know that ballot papers have already started dropping on the doorsteps of conservative party members. Just over 160,000 are qualified to vote in this contest, and of course we will find that the results of that ballot on the 23rd ofjuly. Labour mp Jess Phillips has left her 10 year old son on the steps of downing street as a protest against funding cuts that have led to schools closing early. Her son, danny, was left to get on with some homework before being joined by a few other children from the demonstration. He attends a school in birmingham that is closing early due to budget restrictions. Earlier, ms phillips led a march from Parliament Square with pupils, parents, teachers and save our schools campaigners. People with complete paralysis have been given fresh hope after pioneering surgery helped restore movement in their hands and elbows. Surgeons in australia have successfully rewired the nerves inside patients bodies, meaning they can now manage everyday tasks, like feeding themselves or typing. James gallagher reports. This might seem simple, but its remarkable. 0nce paralysed patients have been given control over their hands and arms again. They can now feed themselves or put make up on or type at a computer. Paul robinson was injured in a dirt bike accident four years ago. I can pick something with my left that i wouldnt be able to do with my right. Once i can get it in my right hand, i have a lot of strength. He can now live independently and play wheelchair rugby after having his nerves rewired. So, how did the surgery work . The reason you can move your hands and fingers is because messages come from your brain, travel down your spinal cord and through nerves in your arms to control the muscles in your arms and hands. After a spinal cord injury, those messages from the brain get blocked, get stopped, you lose control and become paralysed. In this study, all the patients had a small amount of control over muscles in the upper arm and shoulder, so the doctors took the nerves that controlled these muscles and rewired them. They connected them to the nerves further down the arm, allowing patients to bend at the elbow and open and close their hands. It will make an enormous difference and will mean back to work, more involved in family life and more independent, able to be by yourself and do the things you want to do with your own privacy restored. Jack had the surgery after fracturing his spine diving into a swimming pool. It has taken months of extensive physiotherapy to relearn how to control his arms and hands again. Experts warn this is still a new procedure that has been tested in very few patients. It is a small study, 16 people, for two hours. So bigger, longer studies will tell us who will benefit most and how long these things will last. In the future, hopefully, it will get even better. The procedure cannot restore control to each individual finger, and it does not work in everyone, but patients say it is transforming their quality of life. James gallagher, bbc news. The founder of the English Defence league, Tommy Robinson faces jail for contempt of court after filming defendants in a criminal trial and broadcasting the footage on social media. The two conservative Party Leadership candidates, lets catch up on the sport. Good evening. Theres not long to wait until we see andy murray and Serena Williams in mixed doubles action at wimbledon. John watson is there for us. John, the big names have been really made to work so far including defending champion Novak Djokovic whos on court now . He is indeed. Hoping to win back to back wimbledon titles once again but as you say, being made to work hard and he is working hard to because peace in the next round because peace in the next round because his opponent hurkacz is just inside the world top 50 and took the second set. But as you can see he has hit back leading 3 1 in the third. So djokovic, should have enough you anticipate, to get past him but as we know anything can happen at the wimbledon championships. But hurkacz might be wondering if that is as good as it gets for him having levelled the match taking that second set. That is how things are shaping up over on court number one but what a story we could witness on centre court. Coco gauff having won those two brilliant matches, first venus williams, it is the third line furthest she has ever been at the grand slam. She is the youngest forever to make the third round since 1991. She has been touted as a future grand slam winner and one of the main stories of the tournament so far and it is those performances that has prompted john mcenroe to say she will be world number one by the age of 20. A lot of pressure on her shoulders. As you can see, she is being made to work on centre court. Lets bring you up to date with some of the other results today. Halep beating her opponent. As the record breaking womens world cup comes to a close this weekend, fifa president Gianni Infantino says he wants to increase the size from 24 to 32 teams for the next tournament and to double its prize money, as well as launching a womens club world cup. After describing the ongoing tournament in france as the best womens world cup ever, infantino set out a five point plan to make sure football seizes this opportunity but as he explains, he may not be able to deliver all of his plans in time for the next tournament. The tricky thing is that we have a world cup coming on in 2023, for which wejust world cup coming on in 2023, for which we just started a month ago, a couple of months ago, a bidding process. Based on 24 teams. So we will need to act more quickly if we wa nt will need to act more quickly if we want a 32 Team Tournament in 2023. But nothing is important to impossible. We need to believe and do what we should have done already some time ago. Thats all the sport for now. Postal ballots have started going out to conservative party members, as the race for number 10 enters its final few weeks. Either borisjohnson orjeremy hunt will be announced as the new Prime Minister on the 23rd july. Yesterday, we had a closer look atjeremy hunt. Today, its mrjohnsons turn. Heres our Political Correspondent chris mason. As a child, borisjohnson said he wanted to be world king. Oh, well, being Prime Minister isnt too bad. And if he beatsjeremy hunt, he will be. He has made a political career out of being different. I could have illustrated this with all sorts of pictures, but these take some beating. Oh, and this is pretty good too. Oh, no so, who is borisjohnson . He went to school at eton and then to oxford university. I declare the motion overwhelmingly carried. Boris then it was journalism. He got sacked from one job for making up a quote. He got an mp, he became an mp and got sacked as a shadow minister because his boss said he had lied to him. And then he was mayor of london, during the olympics. Release the rings into position. Now as one of the biggest voices in the leave campaign, he travelled about on this bus with that claim about sending the eu 350 million quid a week, a claim the Uk Statistics Authority among many others said was rubbish. Shortly after, he had a brief, doomed attempt at becoming Prime Minister. That person cannot be me. But this time, he is the frontrunner. His supporters welcome his clarity on leaving the eu this autumn, with or without a deal. Under theresa mays premiership, the eu never thought we would be prepared to walk away from the negotiation, and boris is very clear that he is prepared to do that. As foreign secretary, he had to apologise for comments he made in parliament about Nazanin Zaghari ratcliffe, the british iranian woman in prison in tehran accused of spying. She was simply teaching people journalism, as i understand it. She was actually on holiday. Sonia purnell wrote a book about johnson called a tale of blonde ambition. We cannot afford to have that sort of chaos with our next Prime Minister. We are, is borisjohnson himself says, in a time of national crisis. We need stability and calm and a lot of attention to detail. And then there is his private life. And there is a lot of it. Who cares . , say his supporters. And there is a lot of them as well. They see borisjohnson as one thing, above everything else, a winner. Someone they hope can beat jeremy corbyn, nigel farage and the liberal democrats. Say Brexit Brexit so, delivering brexit and winning elections is his pitch. And we have never been closer to finding out if he can do it. Chris mason, bbc news. And the two contenders, Boris Johnson and jeremy hunt, are to face Scottish Party members at a hustings event in perth. Both men have pledged to protect the uk union amid warnings from senior tory politicians including, current Prime Minister theresa may, to make the union a key priority of their time at downing street. 0ur scotland correspondent, lorna gordon is in perth. Is it possible to guess whether scottish voters are more interested in or more desperate to preserve the union or are they more worried about brexit . Winners at all fall tonight . When you talk about scottish conservative voters, it is quite ha rd to read conservative voters, it is quite hard to read in an entirely unscientific wonder around the hall a little earlier, i spoke to supporters from both camps. The bodice campus seem to be saying they we re bodice campus seem to be saying they were in favour of brexit, they were not at all worried about the union, their priority was brexit. Their opinion was that questions over Scottish Independence or not were all done and dusted in 2014. But then when you speak to those who say it has to be hunt, they value him because he values the union more and supports a pragmatic exit from the eu. So entirely unscientific, but certainly the opinion in the hall here in perth seems to be divided. I think it is tricky territory for both of them because you have had a taste of it with those comments from theresa may yesterday and both of them have made theirfeelings theresa may yesterday and both of them have made their feelings and their position on the union known. Borisjohnson has talked of having a minister for the borisjohnson has talked of having a ministerfor the union. Borisjohnson has talked of having a minister for the union. And borisjohnson has talked of having a ministerfor the union. And he says that brexits delivered properly would strengthen the union and make it harderfor would strengthen the union and make it harder for independence supporters. Jeremy hunt has said he would never allow the union to be broken up. Expect more questions on that later when this hustings gets under way. Thank you for now lorna. More now on the decision by Jaguar Land Rover to build its new electric vehicle in the uk. The new car will be built atjlrs Castle Bromwich plant in the West Midlands, securing the future for thousands of the companys workforce. Our business correspondent, theo leggett has spent the day at the Castle Bromwich plant. This is a vital announcement which safeguards their future. This is a vital announcement which safeguards theirfuture. I this is a vital announcement which safeguards their future. I was talking to some of them this morning and they were saying that recently morale had been at rock bottom and didnt know what was going to happen. The xj was coming to the end of its life and they didnt know what was going to happen next and in the wider context, Jaguar Land Rover has been cutting jobs. It is in the process of cutting 4500 jobs worldwide, most of them in the uk. So for people working here is very good news. As for the move towards electric cars, that is very interesting because it is the future, but electric cars still make up future, but electric cars still make upa very future, but electric cars still make up a very small proportion of vehicles on a roads, so why did they need to do this . For more on that i am joined by david bailey. David. Is this something thatjl has a choice about . Is this inevitable . Yes we are going electric in a big way. The First Electric cars that are genuinely competitive with the internal Combustion Engine are just arriving. But as cost comes down, we will switch over. So over the next five years there will be a big push towards electric cars and Car Companies have no choice but to try and get into that. I saw yesterday that in june the and get into that. I saw yesterday that injune the number of electric ca is that injune the number of electric cars sold was 60 higher than it was last.
