Riot police have used pepper spray and batons during clashes with protesters in hong kong overnight, on the 22nd anniversary of its transfer from british to chinese rule. The protests are the latest against a law that would allow suspected criminals to be sent to Mainland China to facejustice. The Hong Kong Government has since suspended the plan, but protesters want it scrapped altogether. In the last few minutes weve seen protesters arriving from the march that they began at victoria street. You can see that they began at victoria street. You can see scenes that they began at victoria street. You can see scenes right behind me, people chanting, this is the group of pro democracy protesters that have been marching from victoria park, annually, this is what they do but this year its taken a special symbolism and significance. All day throughout today weve seen clashes between police and protesters right here on this main arterial street in hong kong. You can see right behind me, that these scenes between police and protesters is still tense. Right over there, there is a stand off between riot police and pro democracy protesters. Earlier today, some protesters, a small group of them, tried to get into the Legislative Council building by ramming a trolley through the glass windows. Police pushed back and right now the mood remains tense. The conservative leadership candidate, jeremy hunt, says he will set aside six billion pounds to help the farming and Fishing Industries deal with the impact of a no deal brexit. Meanwhile, his rival, borisjohnson, plans to give a pay rise to millions of Public Sector workers. Mrjohnson has vowed to cut taxes if he becomes Prime Minister, predicting this would stimulate the economy and increase government revenues. Celebrities including Sir Cliff Richard and the radio presenter Paul Gambaccini are launching a petition calling for those accused of sex crimes to be anonymous up to the point they are charged. Sir cliff who was the subject of false accusations in 2014 says the distress and damage to his reputation could have been avoided if he had not been named. Critics of the proposals say the change could prevent victims speaking out. Paul gambaccini will be speaking about his experiences to joanna just after this bulletin. New Research Suggests carrying more fat on legs compared with the stomach protects post menopausal women from heart disease. Carrie, thats the new summary, lets go back tojoanna. Carrie, thank you. Celebrities including radio presenter Paul Gambaccini and singer Sir Cliff Richard are launching a petition calling for those accused of sex crimes to be anonymous up to the point they are charged. At the moment there is nothing stopping the media reporting the name of someone that has been arrested as part of an investigation into Sexual Offences. Alleged victims are given life long anonymity unless they choose to give it up. But some critics say alleged offenders should be named as this might encourage other victims to come forward. Both sir cliff and Paul Gambaccini were falsely accused of Sexual Offences. Sir cliff was never charged and won a privacy claim against the bbc for naming him. The case against Paul Gambaccini was dropped and he received a payout from the cps. Lets talk with danieljanner qc his father, lord greville janner, was accused of abusing a number of children when he was an mp. He died before a trial of the facts around his case in 2015. Daniel is the founder and secretary of falsely accused individuals for reform. And to Paul Gambaccini. Thank you both for coming in. Firstly, paul, i mentioned the case against you or is dropped, you got damages from the cps. Why do you feel so strongly that people shouldnt be named before charge . Because it turns out that a lot of the people who come forward or not speaking the truth. There are people who are speaking the truth, believe me, this is not a competition to see whos been hurt the most. A person whos been hurt the most. A person who has been wronged, empathises with other people who have been wronged regardless of how they have been wronged. But when the police announced that they were inviting people to accuse celebrities saying you will be believed, this obviously brought forward a number of opportunists and something that the police did not envision, fantasists. In other words, in cliff s a son of mine we had never known our accusers. Let alone engaged in anything with them. So consequently, the entire thing was a waste and you realise that when a person is named, before they are charged, it means there hasnt been an investigation. In both of our cases there was zero forensic evidence, cliff said the police you have no evidence in the police you have no evidence in the police said, the accusation is the evidence. Well, im sorry, an accusation is not evidence, it is an accusation is not evidence, it is an accusation which may be true and so we have to have more than one thought in our heads at the same time. That we have two problems and we have to empathise with each other. Why though should someone accused of sexual crimes, be effectively given preferential treatment over someone accused of other crimes like murder for insta nce other crimes like murder for instance because it would put those accused of sexual crimes in a different category, wouldnt it, if there was anonymity prior to charge . Well, people dont understand the difference between being arrested and being charged, being arrested means youve been accused, then an investigation takes place and it is determined whether you will be charged or not. Now, in the case of you had mentioned, murder, there is a threat to public safety. But in the cases of sexual offence, particularly historic sexual offence. Is particularly historic sexual offence isjust the same, isnt it, if someone isjust the same, isnt it, if someone is accused of any crime, sexual crimes, they are also potentially a threat . Can i come in here . There is a unique stigma attached to Sexual Offences and that was recognised by parliament in the Sexual Offences Amendment Act of 1976 which provided for anonymity for suspects. It was then repealed in 1988 so what we are campaigning for is for a reversal to the law as it was which recognised the uniqueness of Sexual Offences. The arguments have gone round the houses over different periods of time and its been discussed in Different Things have been put forward. But what we are all about is rebalancing the scales ofjustice, its gone too far the other way, there been to many tragic high profile cases like pauls answer cliffs, and as it happens my father, but this campaigning is about everybody. Everybody is entitled to the protection that this new law would provide. The reason obviously that there is this scrutiny over sexual allegations is because the alleged victims have the right to anonymity and the reason for that is to encourage victims to come forward which is not something that can apply, there isnt an equality that you apply there. We are seeking a balance so anonymity for suspects, anonymity for the complainant, not the victim until a conviction. So we are seeking that balance. And we think its a fair balance which can be achieved with this bill. Can i say, in terms of people coming forward , say, in terms of people coming forward, of course they can come forward, of course they can come forward if somebody is charged. Then they can come forward. Moreover, within the proposals of this bill, we are going to allow for an application to be made to a judge to lift the ban so a differentjudge, in wholly exceptional circumstances, where there is a danger, thinks the ban has to be lifted, then he can do so. Ban has to be lifted, then he can do so. So its a question of balance, fairness, its a question of justice. A case in point would be the infamous taxi driver. John were boys. Who wound up with multiple convictions. You could have said he is an ongoing threat and therefore the ban must be lifted. Thats ok but to be accused of something 30 yea rs but to be accused of something 30 years ago, you are not an ongoing threat. Worboys. Years ago, you are not an ongoing threat. Worboys. Thats an important point. So many of these are historic and its hard to defend those historic allegations and so easy to make them. Again, there is nothing to say that someone isnt an ongoing threat, it might be an historic allegation that comes out, and until its properly scrutinised that person could be a threat. And the judge would have to carry out a balancing act. Lots of people getting in touch. 0ne viewer says as per uk lot the presumption of innocenceis per uk lot the presumption of innocence is the legal principle that one is considered innocent until proven guilty, all crimes in their accused should be granted anonymity until trial complete, simple. Jonathan says the Dangerous Police will simply charge on a rest with the backing of the cps and abandon the case if they find not enough evidence, the resulting Media Publicity would become far worse, assisting false accusers to add details to their claims. Maria says people accused of sexual abuse shouldnt be named, too many people both celebrities and not have had their lives ruined, they should be named if found guilty. It shouldnt stop people coming forward. All, tell us about your case. As i said, you got compensation, the case against you was dropped, you are com pletely against you was dropped, you are completely in the clear. What was it about being in the Public Domain obviously for that period that impacted so much on you . It has an impacted so much on you . It has an impact on you but also in many other people and they are not being considered when we have this debate and they should be. In my case, of course, i was taken off the air for a year so course, i was taken off the air for a yearsoi course, i was taken off the air for a year so i had a loss of earnings at the same time as i had a lot of legal costs. I was quoted as saying 200,000, i lost, that is the right amount. But also, while i was still being interviewed in the police station, all my relatives around the world regardless of where they lived we re world regardless of where they lived were contacted by the media. My brother in new york city had a reporter trying to enter his apartment. My two female cousins in the state of connecticut who live in different cities with different surnames were contacted, my in laws ina surnames were contacted, my in laws in a norfolk village were approached, my brother in switzerland, this was astonishing, talk about revelation of identity . These people did not deserve being hit over the head with a sledgehammer unexpectedly. And my neighbours in the apartment block very graciously sealed off the two side entrances because there was a recording of reporters around the building and they didnt want them coming in. So a lot of people were affected and dare i say it, those pleasa nt affected and dare i say it, those pleasant people who listen to me on the radio or see me on television we re the radio or see me on television were thwarted for a year. So a lot of people were affected, whats happened now is that sir cliff and i have unintentionally become magnets for people who are going through the system. And they approach us via the internet or the post and we hear is most moving stories of people whose lives have been affected and that includes theirfamily lives have been affected and that includes their family and friends. Its not just includes their family and friends. Its notjust the person who is accused that suffers, there is a lot of people. For you, do you feel like youve completely shaken off in a cloud around your name . Yes, i never worried about that because i knew the moment i was arrested that it was total nonsense. But what bothers me is that it turns out we still have work to do. For law reform and to bring the police to their senses. And hence the petition, for anyone whos interested its called anonymity for those accused of Sexual Offences until charged, very simply, google petition anonymity and Sexual Offences up it comes. We need 100,000 signatures. Thank you both very much. And let us know your thoughts on that. Coming up and well hear from the only way is essex star bobby norris about his campaign to make homophobic abuse online a specific criminal offence. Campaign pledges are coming thick and fast now in the race to be tory leader. Jeremy hunt, says he will set aside six billion pounds to help the farming and Fishing Industries weather the impact of a no deal brexit. Meanwhile, borisjohnson says hell give a pay rise to millions of Public Sector workers. Well be talking to supporters of both candidates in a moment, but first, were going to be testing the popularity of both men with Young Conservative Party activists in the coming weeks. First, our reporter sean clare has been to three constituencies to find out what younger conservatives who will get to choose our next pm think of borisjohnson. The race to decide who will lead the conservative party and the country is on. Its within our hands and if we mess this up, we are going to mess up our country for years to come, especially for the next generation. After being chosen by their fellow mps in westminster, the choice is between borisjohnson, controversial, popular with many members and possibly the biggest political celebrity this country has ever seen. I think there are some people who are such borisjohnson fans that if you have a video of him kicking a puppy they would probably still vote for him. May the best man win. And jeremy hunt who replaced his rival as foreign secretary last year. With jeremy hunt we could actually become more of the centre right party, the compassionate one nation conservatives. The pair will slug it out in the coming weeks as they tried to convince 160,000 or so tory Party Members that they are the right man to lead the country, to resolve brexit and to beatJeremy Corbyns labour party. So who are the people who hold the future of the country in their hands . The average age of a Tory Party Member is 57 but what about those who campaign for the party in the years to come, the younger activists who the party needs if its to reflect contemporary britain . Weve been to london, bedford and the West Midlands to see what they make of borisjohnson as the race to number ten hots up. Labour dominates here in the West Midlands. It is also one of the most diverse areas of the country. So is borisjohnson, a man whos been accused of islamophobia and playing dog whistle politics, the man that the tories need to win places like this . These are all local Party Members. What do they make of borisjohnson whos had to apologise for comparing women who wear the burka to bank robbers and letter boxes . I think hed actually be good for us as a party. Hes got the charisma, he is well liked, i reckon hed be quite popular and if we was going for a general election, he is the best chance weve got at winning. I cannot see him leading this country. I would not want him personally as leader, the man is a racist and hes a philanderer. His personality is not suited to the core values of the conservative party. Borisjohnson would say hes not a racist, he said about the column he wrote about women who had burkas that it was taken out of context, that he was using humour to advance an argument. It seems like a natural defence for people who go around saying those things and if this is whats said publicly, if youre willing to say that publicly, what is said privately, behind closed doors . I dont think he meant any great offence, to be fair, i think it was just a mistake. Yes, he shouldnt have said it in a public forum. If he is making remarks about a letterbox or whatever, all of these things affect us as british ethnic minorities. There can be no quarrel or qualm about the fact that it might have been a misuse of language, hyperbole, he is playing to a base. That is an intentional, strategic plan. I dont think its intentional, strategic thing that boris is trying to do, just by making that remark. I dont think he really had any big strategy behind what came out of his mouth at that time. Hes an intelligent man and he knows the kind of people hes trying to appeal to. Women get attacked every week because they wear headscarves and i think he should have been much more responsible with the language he chose. Whoever is announced as our new Prime Minister next month, brexit will be top of their in tray. As it is in leave voting areas like bedford, where Nigel Farages brexit party got almost four times more votes than the tories the recent european elections. Meet. Most of them are backing borisjohnson who has promised to take us out of the eu with or without a deal before the 31st of october. A deadline jeremy hunt has dismissed as fake. For me, the biggest reason is brexit. I backed raab and i think that boris is the next best candidate to deliver and move it on, really. I dont thinkjeremy hunt has the power. I think hes the only person apart from raab, who is positive about a full, clean brexit and hes the only person i think that can win an election. If we were back to you know, normal times, jeremy hunt would be the steady figure that we would definitely need as a country, i think. Looking beyond brexit do you have a sense of what either candidate want to achieve for the country . Not really for boris. He has kept quite tight lipped, really, hasnt he . He can reach out to areas like bedford, a leave voting constituency, on the basis of brexit but if he continues to fail to set out any kind of policy or any future plans he has, then i think hes going to struggle. I think what boris always brings is positivity, you know. And communities that are left behind, you look at him, hes always punching the air like we can do it and i think he would be able to get a movement behind him if he campaigns properly in an election. People are bored of squeaky clean politicians because actually, everyone knows they are not squeaky clean, they are pretending to be and everyone sees right through it. Boris comes out and says, my hands are dirty, i know they are dirty but i am doing what i do and that appeals to people because at least hes honest about who he is, if nothing else. To a certain extent, people dont want squeaky clean politicians but you dont want them dripping in mud. Concerns about borisjohnsons private life have, in the media at least, dominated the race so far. But what about for Party Members, is it going to be personal or policy that will decide who they want to put charge . We are in london, traditionally the home of more liberal leaning conservatives to meet ellie and ella. I think there are some people who are such Boris Johnson fans that there could be a video of him kicking a puppy and theyd probably still vote for him. He is one of those personalities and he does have some very die hard fans in the party. Borisjohnson, you know, he has this history of affairs and hes quite free in his sexuality and stuff like that. But i dont think he has a problem with women. Some peoples private lives are going to be a big issue but a lot of people are aware at the moment that policy is the most important thing and we havent had the policies that people have wanted, we havent had policies that have kept a government together for a while. I thinkjeremy hunt has been quite cautious and how he approaches talking about Boris Johnson because there is a lot going on in the press at the moment about him. People always say, does it matter that their private lives come into this . Im ignoring that until i hear the policy. Its time for a good shake up and its time to rejuvenate things a little bit from the time weve had theresa may in. The race to become Prime Minister will be run under the shadow of brexit. Jeremy hunt has ground to make up of Party Members but under intense scrutiny with three weeks, 1a Campaign Hustings to go, he will be hoping that his image as a safe and steady pair of hands can convince them. For years, its been said that the only person who can beat borisjohnson is borisjohnson himself. The next few weeks will, at last, answer that question. Well find out what conservatives think ofjeremy hunt in the next film, and speaking to one of his supporters in a moment. But first, watching that with me is Therese Coffey mp environment minister and a borisjohnson supporter. Thank you so much forjoining us. You were a remainer but why are you supporting boris now . |j you were a remainer but why are you supporting boris now . I respect the result of the referendum and weve spent the last three years trying to make sure we honour that result and so make sure we honour that result and so far weve not been able to get a solution through parliament. With the Prime Minister leaving i think we need a leader who will guarantee that we will make sure that we respect the result and leave the European Union and i genuinely believe boris has the best way of getting the cut through to achieve that. He says hell only have people in his cabinet who sign up to a no deal brexit, would you sign up to a cabinet on that basis . Ive always supported the idea that we need to keep no deal on a table but absolutely, boris has said consistently he wants to try and secure a deal. Keep it on the table is different to saying you will absolutely sign up to a pledge to say you will back it, come what may. Would you serve on his cabinet in that basis . Absolutely, we are not talking about who will be in his next cabinet. Its obviously an important thing to know how far down the road he can go in terms of taking his cabinet with him. Down the road of no deal. Which then brings in the permutations of other Parliament Needs to be suspended in order to get it through. Parliament needs to be suspended in order to get it throughlj Parliament Needs to be suspended in order to get it through. I think both candidates have said they want to see a deal, boris has been very clear that 0ctober to see a deal, boris has been very clear that october the 31st is the deadline on which he believes we must leave the European Union in order to restore faith in democracy as well. This has been going on for far too long. We need to bring this toa far too long. We need to bring this to a head. The eu leaders gave us the state of the 31st of october and boris is clearly the candidate to be the next leader and Prime Minister who will honour at that date. Its trying to work out exactly how firm that pledges because hes said, no deal brexit, do or die. But he is also said the chances of no deal is 1 million to one. Itjust sounds like hes trying to appeal to all people and actually when push comes to shove, what will happen . people and actually when push comes to shove, what will happen . I think he has been Crystal Clear that we must leave on october the 31st, otherwise its going to require the Prime Minister to go and ask for a further extension. When you then say the chances of a no deal are 1 million to one. He believes he can secure the deal, get it through parliament is appropriate and make sure we leave. There is a big question about how we respect democracy and that was clearly demonstrated in the referendum result in 2016. But its a case now of whos got the confidence to make sure that happens and we have been preparing as a government for no deal, the preparations are largely done. I would say we need to make sure that they are supercharged and already the work under this Prime Minister is making sure that is happening already. Philip hammond, the chancellor, has spoken about the party s hard won the chancellor, has spoken about the party s ha rd won reputation the chancellor, has spoken about the party s hard won reputation over the years of fiscal discipline through the time of austerity, the difficulties of that. He is said there is effectively around £26 billion available for spending pledges in the event of a brexit with a deal. Weve got borisjohnson talking about spending money it seems on everything, police, infrastructure, he says he would borrow for that. It doesnt sound like we are getting a very carefully looked at tally of what this meant it would be that would maintain the party s reputation that Philip Hammond talks about for fiscal responsibility . The chancellor said about a fund in case of no deal allows a cushion for government to be able to respond to any measures that may be necessary in the event ofa no that may be necessary in the event of a no deal but i believe that what boris s policy is putting forward is recognising things like tax and national insurance, bringing together a threshold for higher earners so together a threshold for higher earners so that people when the original high income tax was put in place that was done to hit 5 of the richest people, not 15 20 but other elements about boosting Education Funding isa elements about boosting Education Funding is a minimum level for everybody, hold that thought. funding is a minimum level for everybody, hold that thought. I want to go back but we just have to pause for a moment. To say goodbye to viewers watching us on bbc two, the bbc wimbledon coverage is about to start so to continue watching our programme you need to switch over to 0k, we can go back over the figures you were talking about and what that money that Philip Hammond was talking about. That was not for the tax cuts that borisjohnson is talking about . Just go back over what you were saying. There is a variety of things boris has started to set out where he thinks priorities are, after making sure we delivered leaving the European Union on october the 31st. He talked about School Funding to make sure the minimum level for every child. know he has talked about where he wa nts to know he has talked about where he wants to spend money but the question is where it would come from. I have explained in the event of no deal there is a cushion set aside forfunding. Of no deal there is a cushion set aside for funding. The chancellor has already set out and it could be released in the case of brexit with a deal. It is not like there is £26 billion sitting waiting to be released, it is predicated on money that would become available where their growth in the economy and in their growth in the economy and in the event of no deal there would not be that growth necessarily. That is why there is an insurance. What is the insurance cover . The amount of money the chancellor has set aside in the case of no deal is there already. We are about to go into Spending Review where we prioritise what fiscal funds are available but i believe we are the sensible party when it comes to considering getting the balance right between spending and taxes. Some of these things are about resetting where we want to be. The point is he is promising all sorts of things that would not happen in the event of a no deal. There would not be the money for them. There is an element of prioritisation. There have been pledges on aspects of School Funding. The tax cuts would go . That has been set out the prioritisation on when these things would happen with change but i believe there is a commitment to making that change but there are elements where i think boris will continue to set out where the priorities would be for his government. The long term is getting ready to leave the european with a deal and also if it is without a deal. It is said we can borrow at low rates and that is the right thing to do, which sounds like what Jeremy Corbyn has been saying a long time in the conservative party said would be wrong. The difference between conservative and labour economics, we have the ongoing credibility to balance spending. Economics, we have the ongoing credibility to balance spendingm will be lost if you get it wrong. That has led to this government being able to access financing at record low interest rates. We would not see that with a Jeremy Corbyn government. Both candidates would say the worst thing that could happen to this country is to see Jeremy Corbett in charge. We need to get through the next stage of brexit and then win an election and i think boris has the character and track record run in london. This comes from a newspaper article from 2016. It said the cameron camp have launched anyone but boris campaign. This was after the Prime Minister resigned and went through a list of contenders. The group including matt hancock and others alighted upon theresa may as their favoured candidate. Were you in that group . I have never been anyone but boris. Were you in the group that decided theresa may would be a good candidate . She has been a good Prime Minister. The point is it was theresa may rather than Boris Johnson. It was theresa may and any other candidate it is fair to say. We were in a difficult situation. The Prime Minister has resigned. Three years on we have not delivered the outcome of the referendum and i believe that is critical and i believe that is critical and i believe boris is the person who will get us through the deadline with or without a deal but i believe we have got the capability to make sure we get a deal that gets through parliament. A question on allegations of islamophobia in the tory party because the candidates agreed there would be an enquiry to look at that during the debate. Borisjohnson repeatedly look at that during the debate. Boris johnson repeatedly accused look at that during the debate. Borisjohnson repeatedly accused of dog whistle politics. We heard in the video many see him as racist. Is he the right person to lead the party when those allegations are there . Boris johnson is not racist. Im conscious he uses colourful language like many journalists im conscious he uses colourful language like manyjournalists in a paper to make a point. We know the party has undertaken investigations about islamophobia. A council in suffolk my counsellor in suffolk was dismissed from the party. We ta ke was dismissed from the party. We take this matter seriously. You say he is the heineken politician but 2996 he is the heineken politician but 29 of voters in the country said borisjohnson, a1 29 of voters in the country said Boris Johnson, a1 jeremy hunt. 29 of voters in the country said Boris Johnson, 4196 jeremy hunt. You are seeing different poles but i believe boris is the only politician known in the world by his first name and he reaches around parts of the country no other politician in this country no other politician in this country does and i believe, on his track record in london, also as foreign secretary, bringing the world together in a diplomatic protest to russia, he has made a difference and believe he can make a difference and believe he can make a difference as Prime Minister. This guest believes jeremy hunt difference as Prime Minister. This guest believesjeremy hunt should be the next Prime Minister. Lets pick up the next Prime Minister. Lets pick up on the final point from therese. There is momentum behind Boris Johnson. He has great qualities but i have had the pleasure of working with jeremy hunt at the i have had the pleasure of working withjeremy hunt at the foreign 0ffice withjeremy hunt at the Foreign Office and have been struck by his approach, a thoughtful politician and his background as an entrepreneur gives him a track record of being a strong negotiator. What we will need over the next hundred days is someone who is able to negotiate and has a strong wreck or doing that. I think he would make an excellent Prime Minister and represent us well on the world stage. We heard in the video one of the tory supporters saying there is a view Boris Johnson the tory supporters saying there is a view borisjohnson could kick a puppy a view borisjohnson could kick a puppy and when. Is the party hungry for a characterful leadership . Boris johnson is well known and was a great mayor of london. As this contest with the head to head part of the contest continuing, i brought jeremy hunt to my constituency and he was also well received and i think one of the things we are seeing is the momentum is with jeremy hunt, so in terms of as people get to know him better across the country, you mentioned the poll, 41 to 29 people would prefer him as being the next Prime Minister. That is the general public but it is tory Party Members who get to vote and currently Boris Johnson Party Members who get to vote and currently borisjohnson is ahead. I was asking about trying to pin down where borisjohnson stands when he says things that seem to be contradictory. Jeremy hunt is doing the same. He said he would back no deal albeit with a heavy heart, then he said business going bust is a price worth paying for a no deal brexit. He has been clear on this. We need to maintain no deal as an option on the table. In any negotiation, and he has done many as a business person, you need the ability to walk away. He has gone beyond saying it is just about negotiation. He thinks he is the best negotiator and best person to get the outcome we want which is to leave with the deal parliament will agree. The risk of going. In a more extreme way, for october 31 and having it as a hard deadline in all circumstances is that parliament will react. I think what you do not wa nt to will react. I think what you do not want to have anjeremy hunt is clear, you do not want a general election that can be triggered by parliament before we get to october 31. Then you run the risk of losing brexit altogether and as a democrat, we respect the outcome of the referendum. Jeremy hunt has said in the event of a choice between no deal and no brexit, he would choose no deal. Hang on. It feels contradictory. You have said if you extend the deadline you run the risk of no brexit. I said if you go hell for leather for that deadline you run the risk of parliaments reacting and potentially triggering a general election before the deadline. I think if we have a general election before brexit, we run the risk of losing brexit altogether. Jeremy hunt has said if it is looking like there will not be a deal at the beginning of october he would go for a no deal brexit. Beginning of october he would go for a nodeal brexit. He has said 0ctober a nodeal brexit. He has said october the 31st, if you are close to getting a deal on october the sist. To getting a deal on october the 31st. Im sorry, i know he said that, but in terms of the latest things he said. He said by the beginning of october, if it is looking like we will not get a deal he would go for a no deal brexit, which puts him in the same territory as borisjohnson. Which puts him in the same territory as Boris Johnson. There is similarity. The difference is that in terms of actively aiming for 0ctober in terms of actively aiming for october the 31st and effectively saying. Ithink october the 31st and effectively saying. I think this is boriss position. We will immediately ask for a standstill agreement, calling brussels to come here. All of that is an approach he is planning to take. The better negotiating approach is the one thatjeremy hunt proposes, to have a team of negotiators, including the dup and drg, to find a way forward. negotiators, including the dup and drg, to find a way forward. I want to ask about the magic money tree erg. Jeremy hunt said he would spend 15 billion extra on defence, 6 billion forfarmers 15 billion extra on defence, 6 billion for farmers and fishermen and Cutting Corporation tax costing 13 billion a year. That totals 34 billion. Where does that come from . You are falling into a trap because we have cut Corporation Tax from 28 to 19 and revenues have gone up by over 40 . There are taxes you can reduce that turbocharger to power up the economy and you end up getting more revenue. Jeremy hunt made it clear he thinks Cutting Corporation tax to send a signal to the world to base your business here is a key pa rt base your business here is a key part of his plan and it would lead to higher revenues. I dont think thatis to higher revenues. I dont think that is a cost. It would lead to more revenue. As that is a cost. It would lead to more revenue. As far as that is a cost. It would lead to more revenue. As far as spending more revenue. As far as spending more on defence, that is an important part of what we need to do post brexit and as a former defence minister i support that approach to spending more. Harriett baldwin, thank you. Let us know your thoughts on the leadership contenders. Theres been more violence in hong kong, with clashes between police and pro democracy protesters on the anniversary of china taking control of the territory. Protesters tried to storm hong kongs legislature, using a metal trolley and poles to smash the windows. They are angry about planned legislation that would allow extraditions to china. Nick, bring this up to date with the latest. Tonight, hong kong is a city of deep anger and utter chaos. There are thousands of demonstrators dressed in black often with yellow helmets. They have surrounded the assembly, where politicians normally gather. They tried to smash their way in earlier. We were there. Around the corner they are trying another entrance, trying to batter their way into this building. It is a symbolic day because this marks the anniversary in 1997 when this place hong kong was handed overfrom british rule to chinese rule. Today we have a demonstration against this particular law that so many people hated here, fearful that suspects would be sent to Mainland China to face trial. People say they have an anger that beijing is shaping their lives and future. A lot of elements driving this anger and looking around, teenagers, in their20s, most people. In the last month or so the protest has grown and today is no exception. We do not know where it goes from here. Thank you. After a bitter four year feud, an nhs strike and the cancellation of hundreds of thousands appointments, Junior Doctors in england have agreed to end the dispute over their pay and accept a new contract. Members of the British Medical Association voted in favour of new conditions including an 8 pay rise over four years. Health secretary matt hancock says the deal will give Junior Doctors and current medical students the support they deserve. But some campaigners disagree, claiming any financial gains will be largely negated by inflation. Where theJunior Doctors committee is expected to agree to it. Joining us now is dr Layth Hanbali a Junior Doctor who voted against the new deal who came off his shift an hour or so ago. Dr Carina Tyrrell is a Junior Doctor who voted in favour of the deal. And were also joined by the chair of the British Medical Associations Junior Doctors committee dr wijesuriya. You voted for the deal. Why . Because i think it is a step in the right direction for improving the working conditions of doctors stop but i feel there is more that can be done and just the other week i was with the Nhs Clinical Entrepreneur Programme where we discussed bringing Technological Solutions to the nhs such as getting rid of pagers and fax machines and replacing it with up to date technology to improve communication and patient care and working conditions for doctors. You voted against it, why . I voted against because i thought although there we re because i thought although there were some improvements to the contract negotiated in 2016, imposed, in 2016, it did notjustify coming out of dispute with the government. The fundamental question i asked, is this going to resolve all of the pressures that have been created onjunior all of the pressures that have been created on Junior Doctors and all of the pressures that have been created onJunior Doctors and caused them to leave the nhs en masse as we are seeing . The answer was it is not going to solve those problems and we are still going to be working atm until 9pm including saturday as normal hours. We do not know if it will improve quality. I thought there was still Different Things that needed to be resolved before we come out of dispute with the government. Mike atm until 9pm. Would you leave . We all ask ourselves that question. What we need to do, the democratic process has been carried out but with less engagement from Junior Doctors. Fewer voted in total in this vote than any other vote recently. The number of eligible vote rs recently. The number of eligible voters fell by 13, recently. The number of eligible voters fell by13, 14,000, which shows the voters fell by 13, 14,000, which shows the mass exodus over the last years. I think the priority, accepting it will be the deal our union has agreed in its own processes with the government is re engaged Junior Doctors, find out what the priorities are, re mobilise the motivation and enthusiasm we saw in 2015 and 16 forJunior Doctors to offer alternatives to protest effectively and to show the government that unless they get it right with Junior Doctors, the government will suffer. It was just said about a small proportion of the membership voted, 28 . Said about a small proportion of the membership voted, 2896. 2896 is a good turnout. When you look at local Council Elections in 2018, 30 5 stop but this should be an engaged electorate. It is which is why i think we have had an overwhelming 82 majority. But 28 voting. That is 12,000 Junior Doctors and a huge number that reflects i think the views of the large body of people we represent. What we need to recognise is the context has changed. We are not ina is the context has changed. We are not in a position where five years ago we were told that Junior Doctors do not work evenings and weekends. Also the level of engagement has been astonishing. For three years we have surveyed Junior Doctors, had open meetings, two Huge National conferences where we have talked to people about what it is they wanted to correct in the contract. Two referendums and now a final deal that allows us to engage meaningfully in the future. That is not a lack of engagement, it is careful and sustained engagement over years. James says he voted for the contract which helps better people who work anti social hours. They say some left wing colleagues are unrealistic. We are better paid than teachers and nurses and saying otherwise stinks of intellectual snobbery. Another e mail, i have a comment, why are doctors getting 8 plus when nurses were offered 6. 5 . These are people in the front line who take most of the flak. How would you respond to those comments by james about how would you respond to those comments byjames about anyone who thinks it isnt a good deal stinks of intellectual snobbery . So i think that doctors have a huge responsibility, as do all health ca re responsibility, as do all health care professionals, including nurses. We have an issue withJunior Doctors leaving the uk and we need to think about how we will retain those doctors and i am a little bit concerned about the increases in pay which may or may not counteract inflation, which is why i say i am for the proposed changes because it isa for the proposed changes because it is a step in the right direction but by no means the end of this. There needs to be ongoing communication between doctors and governments and all parties involved. This is at least something that is getting us going but we need to consider wider issues as a whole. Has being a doctor being what you expected . Issues as a whole. Has being a doctor being what you expected . M isa doctor being what you expected . M is a huge privilege to be a doctor but also tough. It is tough working on the front line. One of the changes in the contract is to help doctors after night shifts. I have experienced, after a long night shift, one time when i was based at a hospital an hour away from my base hospital, on my commute home i would have to occasionally stop at a service station to sleep in the car because i did not feel safe to drive all the way home. We need to consider this and improve the working life of doctors to improve patient safety. What would you say on that . I agree it is about the working conditions, about having appropriate support for Junior Doctors and appropriate recognition for all the hard work they put in, in orderto retain for all the hard work they put in, in order to retain them and make them feel valued and whether part of thatis them feel valued and whether part of that is a pay deal should be considered and it does not negate the hard work all the other Public Sector workers put in. This is part ofa Sector Workers put in. This is part of a wider problem. If we feel Junior Doctors are remunerated more than other professionals, is not that it doctors should be paid less but other workers should get an uplift and be recognised for their ha rd uplift and be recognised for their hard work and that is a symptom of the problem the government has caused in not recognising the hard work of Public Sector workers. Should online homophobia be a criminal offence . Only way is essex star bobby norris has begun a campaign to make it so, after receiving a torrent of homophobic abuse online. Go hang yourself, i hope you get cancer these are some of the most recent abusive comments that he has faced on social media. It led to him starting a petition that now has more than 150,000 signatures. And today it will be debated in parliament. I spoke with bobby this morning before he headed off to westminster to watch the debate. He told us what the impact of these messages has been. I mean, its so intense, what some people think is acceptable to send people online. Like youve touched upon, i have been sent death threats, people have wished cancer on me. They have told me i should have acid thrown in my face. This is literally because of my sexuality. I cannot believe. It is not until i have spoken about it that ive realised how many people are getting homophobic trolling online and i dont think its necessarily anything to do with what i do as a profession. I think it is so rife at the moment. So many people are going through it and since speaking out about it and doing my petition, i cant believe the messages ive had from parents and others going through it. For me, today im in parliament. Im sure a little bit exciting. And, fingers crossed, that can kind of make a change. That is obviously a big step you are trying to take. In terms of how you respond when these things come through, what do you do . Do you report them . I report them and follow all the channels on the various social media you do to let them know you have received an offensive message or comment, etc. But i dont think you can ever fully prepare yourself. 0ne sunday i was literally stood there, doing a roast dinner, and i was getting the most vile stuff. I thought i need people to know how bad it is and although it is not an easy read, i thought i am going to start showing some people how bad it is, and that is what i have done. And some people have been so shocked, quite rightly so, that its at the level its at and as abusive as it is. It is already covered under existing hate crime legislation. Have you ever gone as far as to report any of this to the police . Since it has got to the level its at and ive spoken about it so publicly, i dont think enough is being done. I think social media is growing so big in relatively a small amount of years that it hasnt caught up, really. So what would be a crime on the central line if you threaten someone or you have said some of that stuff, i think it is seen as very different to online. Also, i question why people think that is acceptable online. I think people feel that little bit more brave when they are sat behind a computer screen or sending messages to people. I think people need to realise that it is not ok, whether it is online orface to face, it is just not acceptable. So you want this to be a crime, online homophobic abuse, have you thought about the punishments you think there should be for it . Thats what im intrigued to hear it parliament today. In parliament today. I would like to see their views and thoughts on it. I am realistic. I know it will be hard to police because social media is so big now. But we almost need to look at social media as a whole and how it is so easy to set up an account, and whether they get the account suspended or deleted, they literally can just get another e mail address and within five minutes start another one. And some people have specific trolling accounts. Sometimes they dont put a photo on and literally they are using them to troll people. When you look at how easy it is to set up a social media account. People need to be more accountable and more aware of what they are sending people. We are living in an age where Mental Health is on the rise. I think anything anyone can do to try to relieve that a little bit. It is no good for people to receive these messages. I hearfrom people that some people dont want to leave their houses because it has got so bad. Ive heard of people hurting themselves. Unfortunately, some people even taking their own lives, it is that severe. I wonder how you would react to a quote i want to read out from Boris Johnson, the frontrunner to be the next leader of the tory party, and Prime Minister. He wrote in his column in the Daily Telegraph that people need to fight for free speech against the professionally offended. He said the uk needs a campaign for the right to makejokes and the right within the law to be satirical to the point of causing mild offence, because when you endlessly shush people up and stifle debate that is when extremism flourishes. What do you make of that . That is a disappointing thing to hear. This has not taken away peoples freedom of speech. Of course, people will always have opinions and quite rightly so. For me, i draw a line when it becomes threatening and abusive. This is notjust a comment, somebody saying i dont like you, or anything like that. This is people saying they are going to come and stab you or burn you or say you should have acid thrown in your face. Is that freedom of speech . I dont think that is. I think we really have to look at that. And to hear that, it is worrying, because i dont want the message to be out there that you can just say whatever you want and hide behind freedom of speech, because where is the line . Wimbledon 2019 is here. Over the next two weeks, we will see britains two time singles champion andy murray making a return in the doubles after missing last years championships with a career threatening hip injury. Andy said injanuary he thought he might have to retire after this years tournament at the all england club but he is back playing pain free after having his hip resurfaced he is not taking part in the singles competition. What are the highlights today, john . You talk about andy murray. Huge expectation on the shoulders of kyle edmund, who is the british number one in the mens singles, two of ten british players in action today. We wonder what he can produce in the absence of andy murray in the singles. They are last on centre court today. Heather watson is the other british player in action, up against katie mackinally in the katie mackinally in the katie mackinally from the us. 0ne mackinally in the katie mackinally from the us. One of the best stories we have seen is the young 15 year old american who takes on Venus Williams, gauff. 22 years between them. Gauff was sitting a science test before her qualifier match. A huge moment for her. Worth pointing out that before she was born, Venus Williams had won four of her seven grand slam titles. Which goes to show what she had managed before gauff had thought about playing tennis. That will be interesting to watch on court number one later. Thank you very much. Thank you for your company today. I will see you the same time tomorrow. Have a lovely afternoon. Goodbye. Good morning.
