England will face the United States in the semifinals of the world cup. Thats after the us knocked out the hosts france in paris last night. Good morning. We are likely to see the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures across southern and Eastern England up to about 3k degrees. It will be cooler in the north west with a few showers. The full forecast coming up shortly. Its saturday the 29th ofjune. Good morning to you. Our top story the heatwave continues. Today parts of the uk could experience the hottestjune weather in more than 60 years. Temperatures could reach 3a celsius, edging close to the hottest ever june day, recorded in 1957. It follows extreme heat across europe, with Health Warnings still in place in france after record breaking temperatures yesterday. Our reporter leigh milner is in camden park for us this morning. Very good morning to you, leigh. Tell us exactly why you are there today. Good morning. It is certainly heating up, when i last checked it was 19 degrees, at nine oclock in the morning, can you believe it . The reason why i am here is because on this day in 1957, the highest temperature in june was this day in 1957, the highest temperature injune was recorded right here in camden square. 35. 6 degrees, but if you think thats hot, just spare a thought for People Living in france. They had the highest temperature recorded ever yesterday at 45. 9 degrees. The Health Minister there has issued a warning, making sure that the people there stay safe, there has also been red alerts issued by the weather service, and if you are wondering what is causing this heatwave, meteorologists say that hot air is being blown across africa throughout europe, and it is causing havoc. We have seen the wildfires in catalonia, and here in the uk, even some roads have started to melt. If you are getting the train this weekend, bear in mind that they could be cancellations because there are fears that the tracks might start to buckle. If you live in this area, it might be an interesting fa ct to area, it might be an interesting fact to know that this play area used to be the old weather station, where the temperature was taken back in 1957. No doubt there will be plenty of children playing in their later on, hopefully parents will put plenty of this on them. Early this morning i showed you, well, i didnt show you, he showed you, his legs, because he was putting some of this on. Lets see how hes getting on. Thank goodness, he has done his legs how long does it take you to put it on . Your face looks ridiculous. It is like taking children out with us, honestly. I need to get paid more for this. Has he done any work this morning, is or is he just busy putting cream on himself . He has been doing that all morning. Look how white his faces this is preferable to earlier when he was putting the sun cream on his legs, so thank you. Kept it clean this time. Thank you, leigh, for those updates throughout the morning. 0k. President trump has called a temporary truce in his ongoing trade war with china and agreed to return to the negotiating table. Our correspondent Karishma Vaswani joins us now from osaka. Will these talks calm the simmering tension over trade, karishma . There hasnt been a major breakthrough. We were always expecting a resumption in trade negotiations to happen as a result of this meeting, and they wouldnt have sat down and had this conversation without at the very least coming out with this. What is interesting is that President Trump has also said that he will not impose further tariffs on 325 billion worth of chinese goods, but i think the biggest concession, the biggest concession from the us side and the biggest victory from the chinese side is the fact that this company, huawei, at the centre of the us china trade war, and remember it is chinas Biggest Telecom company, and it is in the middle of a controversy in the uk with regards to 5g, President Trump said us companies can start selling to a far away again. They had been banned from doing that. If indeed he is lifting that ban, that will be seen asa lifting that ban, that will be seen as a major goodwill gesture for the chinese, and would certainly be a big opportunity to smooth negotiations as they start to resume these talks, but there is a lot of work to get ahead. To one of the World Leaders who has been a focal point for numerous other leaders over the point of the last 24 hours 01 so over the point of the last 24 hours or so is russian president Vladimir Putin. There has been more taut involving him today as well. Yes, he has been at the centre of many headlines here at the g20, and ahead of the summit he gave a wide ranging interview to the Financial Times where he pronounced that the liberal world order is obsolete, and that liberal democracies can no longer dictate that the world is run. He also met with President Trump in a rather unusual comment coming from President Trump when he was asked by reporters whether or not he would tell the russian leader to stop meddling in us elections, and he turned round and almost half jokingly said this. But he had other things to say as well about the russian people. We had a great discussion, president putin and myself, i thought it was really a tremendous discussion. I think they would like to do trade with the United States, and they have great product, they have great land, very rich land, a lot of oil, a lot of minerals, and the kind of things that we like, and i can see trade going out with russia, it would go fa ntastically, going out with russia, it would go fantastically, we do very little trade with russia, which is ridiculous, frankly. So i can see some very positive things coming out of it. So, President Trump theyre choosing to do trade with russia rather than reprimanding them or saying that they shouldnt meddle in the elections, very unusual for a they shouldnt meddle in the elections, very unusualfor a us president to do this, but we also heard from the british Prime Minister who had a far more chilly reception for Vladimir Putin, very stern, you have seen the photograph splashed around the world of the two of their meeting, and she was very firm on the fact that she wants justice for the never Karishma Vaswani attack. This is what she had to say. Yesterday i told president putin that they can only be a normalisation of our bilateral relationship with russia stops the pattern of irresponsible activity that threatens the uk and its allies, such as the use of the deadly nerve agent on the streets of salisbury. We remain open to a different relationship, but for that to happen, the russian government must choose a different path. As you heard there, very stern words from the british Prime Minister, and i think what all of this underlines is the disunity that is evident at the 620 the disunity that is evident at the g20 summit. This is a global organisation, institution, that has typically come together in moments of great crises facing the world community, the 2008 financial crisis is the last very memorable one when they all Work Together to try to solve that problem. This time around, you dont see that kind of cooperation or working together. What you see is a very fragmented group of countries trying to find some sort of way to agree on some major issues. Karishma, thank you. Karishma vaswani there for us in a psych at this morning. A body has been found in the search for a woman who has been missing on the isle of wight since sunday. 22 year old rosiejohnson from glasgow was last seen at an Activity Centre in wootton where she worked. The queen will address msps in holyrood today as they celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Scottish Parliament. 0ur scotland correspondent james shaw reports. Scottish parliament. 0ur scotland correspondent james shaw reportslj have trust in the good judgment of the scottish people. I am pleased therefore now to declare the Scottish Parliament open. So much has happened since the queen opened the new Scottish Parliamentjust before the turn of the millennium. Not least the rise of the Scottish National party and a referendum when scotla nd National Party and a referendum when scotland voted to stay part of the United Kingdom. I feel it is a really inclusive institution, and it has made me a lot more engaged in local politics, so i think it is a great thing. Scotland is a big country, and there are a lot of things going on that are important to hear that maybe arent as relative to other parts of the uk. think some things have moved on faster when you compare it with some of the things happening in england that are similar. I think scotland is ahead of the game in some places, some issues. In many ways, the parliament has allowed scotland to ta ke parliament has allowed scotland to take a different path from the rest of the country. There is a free personal care for the elderly, scottish students in Higher Education dont pay tuition fees, and most recently, the Scottish Government decided that higher earners should pay more tax than those south of the border, finding new benefits and other public spending. This parliament is now an established fact of scottish life, but a new era of change could be beginning. Most scots did not vote in favour of leaving the European Union, and that means some are now rethinking the independence question. The Scottish Government wa nts a question. The Scottish Government wants a new referendum within the next two years. James shaw, bbc news, edinburgh. The pop superstar lady gaga has praised the achievements of the Gay Rights Movement at a commemoration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the stonewall riots in new york. Injune 1969, in a defining moment for the struggle for lgbt rights, patrons of a gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, rose up against Police Harassment. Between four and six Million People are expected in new york for a weekend of celebrations, as ben hunte reports. It is set to be the biggest pride event of all time. Yes, this weekend, new york city is welcoming an estimated 4 million extra people to its streets to celebrate lgbt pride. It was here on christopher street 50 years ago where many people say the modern lgbt Rights Movement was born. After gay people were denied jobs and after they were branded as mentally ill, on one hot night, they started fighting back. Just a year later, americas first gay pride march took place right on these streets and today, the Stonewall Inn is Still Standing and still serving, with people coming from hours awayjust to take a selfie in front of the iconic bar. The same day as stonewalls 50th anniversary, a commemorative rally took over christopher street. Rainbows were everywhere, and even though sundays pride parade is expected to be this years crowning moment, today there were several surprise special guests, including lady gaga. She was here spreading a message of love and equality. You have the ultimate power and you have never been so visible in the world and that beautiful light and that rainbow is shining all around you. Stand in it, bask in it, allow yourself to glow in it as we grow. Just take that spotlight it belongs to you with so many people out celebrating their freedom, it can be easy to forget that around the world, and even here in the United States, some lgbt people still have to hide because of who they are. Amazing modesty, especially considering he is 25. It has been a week of record breaking temperatures on the continent, in france for example, they broke their record yesterday, but we are expected to get ourfairshare of yesterday, but we are expected to get our fair share of heat and sunshine in the United Kingdom this week as well. What can we do to try to stay cool as the temperatures climb . Gp, dr aisha awanjoins us now to explain what we can do. It is sensible things you would do on holiday, making sure that you are wearing your sun hat and sun cream, and have your water, dont go crazy with the water, you might need a little more, but dont double it up to five litres, just a sensible amount. And make sure you stay out of the sun between 11 and two. And look after Young Children and the elderly, whose bodies dont respond as well to the heat. Many people dont drink enough water anyway, so even to drink your 2. 5 litres might be a step up for what some people drink, but it is so important to be hydrated . Yes, and be guided by your thirst. If you have Young Children, it is incredibly difficult to try and get them to keep their water intake when they are playing in the paddling pool and enjoying the sand. Give them high water fruit, pool and enjoying the sand. Give them high waterfruit, like pool and enjoying the sand. Give them high water fruit, like water melons and strawberries, my children can polish off a punnet of strobe is in no time at all. Mine, too. We we re in no time at all. Mine, too. We were looking at some of those wearing black t shirts in the heat in france. Is there any advice on clothing . I wouldnt go dressed like roger to the beach today. That might be for the benefit of other people cotton is your friend. Other people cotton is yourfriend. Avoid anything with polyester, especially overnight. A lot of pyjama suits for children will contain things like polyester, and that will heat them up. Loose clothing, i hat, dont be tempted to wear dark colours if you are out in the middle of the day. Seek shade. In the evenings it is important to make sure that children are dressed appropriately, so it is 0k to let them sleep in their underwear or a nappy if it is really warm. You can see why people get confused, because there are sometimes advice about vitamin d deficiency and getting out in the heat, so striking that balance can be confusing. You can still make vitamin d when the sun is out in cooler parts of the day. I would recommend that you definitely spend time outside in the sun, especially when we have it, so limited, in places like manchester in particular, the north of englert, get out and get your shot of vitamin dand get out and get your shot of vitamin d and enjoy it, but be sensible, so avoid 11 2, especially with Young Children. And sunscreen are so important, if you are out and about, i come from a generation where we didnt know the risks of the sun perhaps so much, but it is so important. It is incredibly important, but it is also important to know your skin type. If you are of my colouring, it is ok to be outside, 20, 30, 40 minutes to make an vitamin d and then put something on. If you are a darker colour than me, say stormzys colour, you could probably outside for an hour to make adequate amounts of vitamin d. But if you are very pale, im talking like the Nicole Kidmans of this world, dont we wish they would probably only need five or ten minutes before they had made their vitamin d, and may be the less time than that, so they might need to put on their sun cream earlier, so be guided. There is a lot of Information Online about sunscreen, but yes, it is important. And a really quick point about overnight. 0vernight you have been out in the sun all day, you go to bed, if you havent rehydrated your body properly, then you try and sleep, you can be there for hours with your body not having enough hydration, so it is really important when you go to bed, isnt it, to make sure you have recovered as best you can . To bed, isnt it, to make sure you have recovered as best you camm is, and it is difficult to sleep if you have a pounding headache because you have a pounding headache because you havent had enough hydration during the day. So leave bottles of water in your room, make sure you are having plenty of fluid during the day, but dont go excessive with it. Tea and coffee dehydrates you, alcohol dehydrates you, so trying to make it water. Smoothies, i would never say sugar high content is great, but in weather like this it is ok. Serve all those people having a barbecue later on. In moderation mine will be teetotal. All things in moderation, and that is key as well. Enjoy the weather. Nice to see you, thank you for coming in. Heres sarah with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. New my good morning. Here is the picture this morning. Here is the picture this morning in Kingston Upon Thames, and particularly across central and eastern parts of england, we will keep the blue skies, and temperatures as high as 34 degrees. It is looking like the london area will see the peak of the heat today, but not everywhere. This is the recent radar and satellite image, and im showing you this lightning, these flushes show thunderstorms pushing across the republic of ireland, and up into the north west of england in south west scotland. But further south and east across the bulk of england and wales, it is hot and sunny, we have a southerly breeze, not just a hot and sunny, we have a southerly breeze, notjust a heat increasing but the humidity, too. Temperatures into the 30s for many of us, we could squeeze 34 degrees, not as hot for scotland and Northern Ireland. Yesterday it was 30 degrees in scotland, a little cooler today. We will continue to see showers and thunderstorms working across scotla nd thunderstorms working across scotland and england, something slightly fresher working in from the west behind them, but we hold onto that warm, humid air down towards the south east for quite a good part of the night. Temperatures generally falling into the mid teens, some of us falling into the mid teens, some of us just starting our sunday relatively warm, but tomorrow will bea relatively warm, but tomorrow will be a different feeling day, we will have lost the high temperatures and the humidity, a fresh feel to the weather tomorrow, but not a bad day, sunny spells and still a few showers on the cards. The hottest of the air thatis on the cards. The hottest of the air that is with us today that will be squeezed towards the east, so tomorrow parts of germany and towards poland will see those very high temperatures, but not quite as hot for northern france and for the uk, too. Most of the showers tomorrow will be initially across Northern Ireland, parts of scotland, and they will work further south and east through the day, and for the southern half of england and wales, you are looking at another dry day ahead, and in the sunshine, temperatures getting up to 25 degrees or so. Typically the high teens of the low 20s further north and west, it wont be as hot as it is today. As we look towards the new working week, High Pressure towards the south west, low pressure in the north east, and in between more of a northerly influence to our weather. Temperatures return to something more typicalfor the time temperatures return to something more typical for the time of year, still a lot of dry and fairly settled weather on the cards, but do be prepared for the heat, humidity and very high levels of uv out there today, particularly across central and Eastern England. Good advice, and you enjoy the weather over the weekend, we will see soon, thank you. It is 9. 21. You are watching breakfast from bbc news. Its time to have a look at the papers, ian mcmillan is here. What are we going to look at first . Vegan strawberries and cream. Here we go, we will fold into a nice shape. Vegan cream, because strawberries already are i used to work in a tennis ball factory, we made 38,000 dozen tennis balls a week. And somebody said to me, i once met a vegan, and it was a frightening thing. But now it is completely normal, so im amazed at the headline here. They say it as if it isa headline here. They say it as if it is a daft thing, but it is normal now. Vegan cream . Is a daft thing, but it is normal now. Vegan cream . What is wrong with that. I am not of egan myself, but i like the fact that it has become not seen as something not strange and weird, except in headlines like this. It isjust weird, except in headlines like this. It is just part of what people decide to do with their eating, although i often think about that one at that fellow saw in that tennis ball factory, in 1978, like it was some kind of alien being from the planet of egan. But he is probably still looking good. It is good that there is more choice out there, whatever peoples personal feelings are. And of course tennis balls are vegan. You made in 452,000 tennis balls a week was that it was more or less an entire weeks worth went to wimbledon. They use so many. 38,000 dozen, that is a lot. Blimey, because they last for ages. In the sun today, a mega casino could be heading to blackpool. I feel that there has been talk of this meggat casino for literally 15 yea rs this meggat casino for literally 15 years now. Popping up all over the place. It was going to be near the etihad, wasnt it. This is about really towns in austerity britain trying to rebrand themselves. Remember when 0ldham was called the home of the tubular bandage, do you remember that . There was a bridge over the station that said, 0ldham, home of the tubular bandage. We are a lwa ys home of the tubular bandage. We are always trying to reinvent ourselves. Im not sure about the casino, i know that blackpool got great news a couple of years ago when we got £4 million from the arts council lottery, and maybe that is what you need, a mixture of the museum and the casino, somehow you want it not to be just the casino, somehow you want it not to bejust one the casino, somehow you want it not to be just one thing, notjust the tubular bandage, but Something Else as well. Youve got to somehow say, we can be a casino, a place with a museum, we can reinvent ourselves for the 21st century, but notjust looking one way, that is what i think about that. We have been seeing this mega casino coming for ages, kind of creeping forward. There was going to be one on every street a special vegan casinos people who like to gamble in a vegan way. They havent quite happened yet, maybe they will happen in lancashire, blackpool, but nope maybe we should think about holistic approach to how we reinvent our town is. Blackpool is wonderful as it is. It has undergone regeneration, looks fantastic. It does. They were saying they had spent £100,000 on ten trees in blackpool. Ten grand a tree. You could get one big tree, very, very big tree. The vegans will be happy. And now, combating indoor pollution, leave your window open while you have a bath. It is because of the stuff that gets washed off your body . This is one of these hostage to fortune stories, because i can see why they are doing it, because your bathroom might geta are doing it, because your bathroom might get a bit mouldy if you keep the window shut, but i like to jump in the bath with joy and delight, and then you slip on the soap, you are straight out the window. What is ian doing . Have you got a big window . Ian, what are you doing . Naked ian flying across the street. Nobody wants that. And then things coming in the window. Youre sitting there, you have got in the bath, sparrows, starlings, coming through the open window. I think there is more danger in this than health benefits, myself. It is quite nice to have that cold hit when you get out of a hot bath, it is like the sorn effect. It is a bit, but if you have at the window open, it is a hostage to fortune. Literally anything could happen. Maybe i am of anything could happen. Maybe i am of a certain age, i have started taking cod liver oil, because apparently it is good for yourjoints. You like you are allowed to take that in your 20s. I have just noted, 20s. I havejust noted, because 20s. I have just noted, because there 20s. I havejust noted, because there is a picture here. Fish supplements do not boost your brain health, and could do more damage than good. That might explaina could do more damage than good. That might explain a thing or two in my case i read this wrong, for sure oil is where you go and buy your fish and chips in barnsley, but they are talking about oily fish, my wife thinks oily fish makes her more healthy, but maybe it doesnt. Is a chippie called a fish oil in barnsley . Yes, we go to the fish oil to get the fish out of the oil. Too often we are fooled into thinking that if we take this small tablet, it will make us healthier, whereas in fact having a Healthy Lifestyle is probably better than just sitting there, open the bathroom window, not too far, perhaps be a vegan for half an hour, go to blackpool and have some fresh air and fun and perhaps have a Healthy Lifestyle rather than thinking in your tablet is going to make you instantly better. Sometimes it is the placebo effect of it, isnt it . It is, thats what i use fa ke isnt it . It is, thats what i use fake soap in the bath. Makes you think you are clean yell it does. I have just read my maths. 456,000 tennis balls you are making every week. I used to stick them together in the presses. It was a skilled job. Someone has got to do it. I did it. Nowadays you would get rsi, wouldnt you . Thank it. Nowadays you would get rsi, wouldnt you . Thank you very much, ian, safe journey home. Wouldnt you . Thank you very much, ian, safejourney home. What a strange combination, chocolate and cherries. I like custard, i like sponge, i like jelly, cherries. I like custard, i like sponge, ilikejelly, but cherries. I like custard, i like sponge, i like jelly, but put them together, no. We have two great chefs here as well, what is going on . Full of happiness, bacon brioche. And you havent actually got a trolley. |j like it later on. And you havent actually got a trolley. I am going to get one now because you said that i to get one now because you said that lam to get one now because you said that i am totally going to get one. And a tabard. You guys at home are in charge of what danny eats, so vote to fly him to food heaven or food hell. See you at ten cant take responsible to for that. We will see a little bit later. Something fresh and moving behind those thunderstorms, it wont be quite as muggy as it was last night in the north and north west. Something will feel much fresher thanit something will feel much fresher than it is today. A day of sunshine and showers but we will lose the heat and humidity weve seen today. Breaking the 20mph speed limit near schools is particularly important for the safety of children, with just the fear of accidents putting many parents off allowing their kids to travel to school alone. The metropolitan police and transport for london have now enlisted the help of school children, as a way to encourage motorists to change their behaviour. Dougal shaw reports. If you get caught speeding near this Primary School in south london you might be in for a surprise. The police will tell you that instead of facing a fine or points on your license, you can instead agree to be questioned by a panel of Primary School pupils about your actions. Which is exactly what this motorist decided to do. Do you have any points on your license . No, totally clean. Do you realise the dangers you are putting yourself and others in . I didnt realise i was speeding, i didnt realise it was a 20 until i was pulled over. So, no, i didnt realise the danger. He didnt realise the dangers, kids, so lets tell him some. What are they . If you hit someone there is the potential of them dying. So how did he take the judges criticism . It was a shock that made it a reality, that is for sure. I didnt realise questions i was going to get. It was, yeah, it made me see different. The idea is to enforce the 20 mph speed limit to protect children at school. The police dont offer this option to drivers who they think have significantly broken the speed limit. In this 90 minute session, 32 motorists were stopped. All of them chose to face the children rather than accept a traditional penalty. It was very fun, because theyre random people and you just get to tell them off and they cant do anything to you because the police are there. You get to tell them off and its fun. It is quite surprising that there are that many people speeding around a school. The metropolitan police and transport for london are hoping to roll out the scheme across the capital. You shouldnt need an eight year old to explain this to you. The fact that these kids are having to come out and do this ought to make you rather ashamed. Importantly, though, the final act in this confrontation is always one of reconciliation. Do we forgive him . Yes. We forgive him and hope you will learn from that. I will now, for sure.
