About the gunman nikolas cruz. Houses in wales shake as an earthquake of 4. 4 magnitude hits the epicentre just north of swansea. Good afternoon and welcome to bbc news. Lizzy yarnold has won team gbs first gold medal at the Winter Olympics in south korea. Shes won the womens skeleton, making yarnold the first british competitor to defend a winter olympic title. Yarnold headed into the final run 0. 02 seconds behind leaderjanine flock, but a poor finish from the austrian saw her drop out of the medal places. Our sports correspondent, David Ornstein, is in pyongchang. An extraordinary day here, one that will live long in british olympic memory. The most successful in british winter olympic history. Thats largely because of Lizzy Yarnold winning the gold medal here in the skeleton and defending her title. Her parentsjoin me now. Clive, can you sum up your emotions . Its unbelievable emotion, that lizzy has achieved what she said she would. She has done it and it is mind blowing. It would take days and weeks to get to realise and accept what she has done. It is mad. And judith, you saw it four years ago in sochi, now in pyeongchang. Your daughter is the most decorated winter olympian ever. Is that sinking in yet . Not at all i was terrified, through all four runs, i just wanted them overcome is that awful to say . I wanted them to get to the end, to be safe and fast. She is amazing under pressure, look at what she has done she said she would do it for our country and she has. It hasnt sunk in, at all and it wasnt an easy path, since sochi. Today we have a gold medal and a bronze medal, with laura deas and izzy atkin in the skiing, that makes an incredible day for Great Britain . Yes, four medals, nearly up to the tally that they predicted. It hasnt been easy, she didnt make the cut in one race. Just one of those up and down seasons. But as lizzy does, she produced in the event she needed to and for everyone at home, she will share those memories with everyone at home and it is a medal for the country, notjust lizzy. Two proud parents, your daughter has made history and rightly you should be very proud. A day british olympic competitors and fans will never forget. It is one that has made history, and it could get even better because we still have just over one week of competition left. Three medals in the Winter Olympics today and four in total, the most successful single day in british winter olympic history. And Lizzy Yarnold, the gold medallist and the most decorated british winter olympian of all time. Lizzy yarnold is not alone on the podium. Her team mate laura deas got a bronze medal in the event. It took the british medal count on saturday to three, after izzy atkin claimed a ski slopestyle bronze. Joe lynskey reports. Weeks and months on snow and ice can come down to just an instant. At these games, a few seconds can turn joy to despair. This was Elise Christies second medal shot. With a lap to go, she had a route to the final. She had to finish in the top two, but this happened. And its between zhou yang and christie now. And christie has crashed again now this most brutal sport can have the most painful ending. And for christie, heartbreak also comes with jeopardy, her favourite event starts in three days time. She now has a race to recover. Right now, im not bothered about medals, im thinking about elise right now. And hopefully, the injurys not a significant one. But as i say, as a precaution, shes gone to hospital to get a scan. But it looked a pretty heavy fall to me. For christie, this has been the cruelest week, but her bad luck comes as her teams fortunes are improving. For izzy atkin, this was a twist into history, bronze in slopestyle is a first british medal won on skis. The american born teenager needed a flawless final run. She had the tricks and the nerve to see it through. I was standing at the bottom after my third and final run. I know i had skied the best i could. And i wasjust waiting, you know, for that last was it three orfourgirls to drop, and my heart was racing. But yeah, i cant believe it. For team gb, these games have been Ground Breaking and heartbreaking. At the olympics, four years hard work can be defined in a moment. Theresa may has called for a new deep and special in the last half hour, henry bolton has been removed as the leader of ukip. 63 of Party Members backed a no confidence motion against mr bolton. The announcement was made by ukips chairman paul oakden. We have received back 1,300 and 78 ballot papers. 11 of those ballot papers were spoiled. The number of members in support of the motion of no confidence, therefore, asking that henry be removed as leader, is a applause that is 63 of the vote. There were 500 votes cast by those wishing to project the motion, that is 37 of the vote. Reject. Therefore, henry bolton has been removed by the democratic decision of the membership. Our reporter Kathryn Stanczyszyn is in birmingham. She is at the emergency general meeting. As you saw, the results around two thirds of voting to get henry bolton out as leader, thereby sparking another leadership contest. But announcements behind me, we are talking about the National Executive committee, the nec, which will very quickly now make a decision on an interim leader. That is what theyre going to be doing right now thats where they have gone, stage to make that decision. They will announce that decision. They will announce that interim leader and a leadership election must be sparked within 90 days. We spoke to henry bolton earlier. He was nervous, from good reason. He said he felt he was if he was removed, it would place the future of ukip in jeopardy. Thats what has happened. He wanted to reform the party, he now wont get the chance. In terms of who might be the chance. In terms of who might be the next leader, Gerard Batten has been talked about widely. A potential candidate. We are likely to find out quite quickly to will throw their hands into the ring for this. At the moment is, this news just sinking in. Celebration for some but quite a lot of people here very disappointed. Saying this is skulduggery, politicalskulduggery, in the form of the National Executive committee. They wanted to see henry bolton remain and unite this party. He said he wanted to professionalise it. There is quite a lot of celebration here as well. We will get that announcement shortly, it seems, about who will be the acting leader. What might puzzle people as they watched this is that ukip has had many leadership changes in recent times. It is only so often you can continue that process before people lose confidence in the overall position and direction are party is taking. Absolutely. That is why some of the membership here today were anxious for this result not to happen. They wanted henry bolton to stay in place, it it is chaotic to have yet another leadership election. He became the fourth leader in 18 months when he took over back in september. Then we have these revelations about text m essa 9 es have these revelations about text m essa g es by have these revelations about Text Messages by his partner. This and also the nec saying we havent got confidence in you as a leader anyway. Some of the membership saying, hang on, we are facing a really difficult time. The whole purpose of our party is in question. We have local elections in may and we know quite a lot of the councils elected in 2014 for ukip up again. Today closed those blocks of councillors . The last bit of political power in the country with the meps that are going. Those people argued that henry bolton needed to stay to create some kind of consistency. But others say he was the wrong man. Thats why we need to deal with this now, even though we are facing a turbulent time. Nigel farage, not here today, wont be happy with this result. He has come out in favour of henry bolton, saying he might have his flaws but if we get rid of him it will speed, hastily the kind of decline of ukip. Henry bolton had mentioned earlier that he feels this would jeopardise the party. Theresa may has called for a new deep and special partnership after brexit to ensure the uk and eu can continue to Work Together on security. In a speech in germany, the Prime Minister said that the uks commitment to protecting europe from threats was unconditional but warned that failing to cooperate would put everyone at risk. In response the president of the European Commission said he would welcome a close Security Alliance but it must be negotiated separately from brexit. Our chief Political Correspondent vicki young reports. In defence and security, the uk is a significant player and the Prime Minister hopes that will get her a special deal. She arrived in munich, keen to lay out britains contribution. Generous spending on defence and expertise it wants to share, even after brexit. Theresa may urged the eu to take a practical approach. This cannot be a time when any of us allow competition between partners, rigid, institutional restrictions, or deep seated ideology to inhibit our cooperation and jeopardise the security of our citizens. Shes calling for a new security treaty so the Close Partnership can continue. Failure to agree one would have damaging consequences, she said. We must do what ever is practical and pragmatic in ensuring our collective security. Those who threaten our security would like nothing more than to see us fractured, so let the message ring out loud and clear today, we will not let that happen. Some listening to this were left bewildered. Things would be so much easier if you stayed, so here comes the questions. Mrs may didnt agree. Brexit was a democratic decision that politicians had to respect and one senior brussels figure seemed to agree. The Commission President said the eu wasnt at war with the uk and didnt want to take revenge on the british people. He said the security bridge would be maintained, but you cannot mix it up with other issues. So it is a familiar message from theresa may. The uk is leaving the European Union, but that doesnt mean close cooperation needs to end. And it is a blunt message too. Saying to europes leaders, dont let your ideology get in the way of the safety of our citizens. The government hopes this speech shows it is acting responsibly, not wanting to drag the important issue of security into fraught brexit negotiations. An earthquake with a 4. 4 magnitude has affected parts of wales and england. The British Geological survey said the epicentre was approximately 12 and a half miles north north east of swansea and at a depth of four and a half miles. It says events of this magnitude only happen in the uk every 2 3 years. Shaking has been reported across south wales, the south west of england and the midlands. A short while ago, i spoke to Roxanne Woolhouse this is the largest earthquake we have had in the last ten years. The last one was in 2008 in the east of wood. This one has been felt overall of wales, most westerly winds, felt as far east as london. And as far north as the lake district. Tell us about any information you have about any damage that may have been done here. No reports of damage yet, but its a little bit early. The earthquake only happens about 1. 5 hours ago. Certainly an earthquake of this size has potential to cause damage, but i would expect the damage, but i would expect the damage to be minor. Part of that is to do with its depth as well as its magnitude. Yes, although this is relatively shallow for a larger british earthquake. When we get an earthquake this size, they are often much deeper, about 15, mutters or even 20. At that depth, they cause significant damage. That was the case ten years ago. That earthquake was eating one which is down and caused virtually no damage at the epicentre. The blinds were moving, the table was rocking. I ran outside, thinking the house was falling. Only to find my neighbour out there asking if i felt the house moving. We realised it must have been an earthquake. How long did it last . About ten seconds, i think. It feels a lot longer when its happening. Definitely. Was it just you at home . Just me and the cats. Im horrified that i ran out. She ran, too . She ran outside which is rare because she is elderly. I was quite shocked that she was outside. When you got outside, what was going on in the streets . My neighbour opposite was out, he told me his tv and chair shaking. The neighbours up the street work out. Did you feel that . Did you feel about . My other neighbour had missed it, he wasnt in. You have been outside back in 5 cents, is there any damage . No, my husband has come home and checked. The houses Still Standing it is something to reflect on, you have now been in an earthquake. I know, it is amazing i adrenaline is still pumping. Thank you very much. President trump has met survivors of wednesdays High School Shooting in florida, in which 17 people died. He thanked the Emergency Services and medical staff who treated the wounded. It comes as pressure mounts on the fbi over the agencys failure to act on a tip that suspect nikolas cruz might carry out an attack. Barbara plett usher reports. The funerals have begun. These students were saying goodbye to a 14 year old classmate. They and their parents have been calling for action from president trump, so other teenagers will not die this way. He and the first lady visited some of the injured still in hospital, including a woman who had been shot four times. He congratulated medical staff. Reporter do our gun laws need to be changed, mr president . But ignored a question on tougher gun control. The president is in his element meeting First Responders who rescued the wounded and captured the killer. He praised their speed and bravery. Give them a raise his wife thanked them for protecting the children. They are our future, and lets take care of them. They have gone through a lot and what they experienced two days ago, you need to take care of them. The president is talking about making schools safer and has linked the violence to Mental Health issues rather than guns. The young man who carried out the attack, nikolas cruz, was a troubled youth who loved guns and found it easy to buy them. It has emerged the fbi ignored a tip off about him last month. The coroner warned he had the potential to carry out a school shooting. Mistakes by Law Enforcement at a new twist to grimly familiar arguments. Mass shootings in america revive continuing debates on gun violence and gun control. But a School Attack like this one boils the issue down to a single question how can we keep our children safe . People here willjudge their president on how he responds to that. Barbara plett usher, bbc news, southern florida. A new scanning system has revealed a painting underneath picassos picture a crouching woman the picture underneath is of the catalan landscape probably painted by one of his assistants. It seems that picasso turned it 90 degrees and used the shape of the landscape to create the womans crouching pose. The discovery has been unveiled today at an International Science conference in austin texas from where our science correspondent pallab ghosh reports. Picassos crouching woman with millions. A painting from his blue period. But theres more to it than meets the eye. The conservators at the gallery analysed it with a new type of scanner, and this is they discovered. Underneath it is a painting of the barcelona landscape by a fellow artist. But turn it 90 degrees and bring back the crouching woman, and you can see that picasso has used the landscape as the basis of his painting. It helps date the painting, it helps determine where the painting was made. But it also gives us a sense of the artist with whom a particular painter was engaging. And i think these insights do help ask us new and more interesting and more scientifically accurate questions. The contour of the hills in the background becomes the crouching womans back, and she takes on the shape and form of the catalan countryside. Until now, only the wealthiest galleries could afford to scan, and even then, it was only for great works of art. But the new system is cheaper and portable, and so can be used by anyone to find the secrets behind any painting they want. Here at the harry ransom center, the curator has questions about this portrait of the american composer, george gershwin. In particular, whether a friend in the front row was painted out and seated further back because he fell out of favour. This figure here is oscar levant, who was a friend of george gershwin, but also a rival. So stories have circulated for years that perhaps he, as the only recognisable figure in the second row, was perhaps moved demoted, as it were from appearing in the first row. So that is one of the questions we can potentially find out with this technology. Can i take a look . Tracy has asked the team that developed the scanning system to help her answer that question. They scan each stroke of the brush, millimetre by millimetre. Its a collaboration that the team wants to extend to more galleries. Many of these paintings are waiting to tell their secrets, so with the x ray flourescent spectrometer, we can help them talk to us more. The team hopes the widespread use of their scanners will increase our understanding of artists, their thought processes and the way they worked. Viewers on bbc one willjoin us shortly for a round up of the days news with reeta chakrabarti. First, Alina Jenkins has the weather. Hello. Weather wise, its weekend of two halves. For many, the best of the sunshine today, certainly the case in guernsey earlier on. But not everyones seeing sunshine, there has been more cloud around bringing showery rain. This is the satellite picture, we will see this cloud through tomorrow. But this cloud will develop outbreaks of rain, particularly across parts of northern and central england. Attached to this front, slowly pushing its way eastwards, a weakening system. Through the rest of the afternoon, cloud breaking with spells of sunshine and rain melting away. Through the evening for most of us, clear skies throughout the night. More cloud in southwast england, parts of wales and northren ireland, but eventually clear skies, a cold and frosty night with temperatures at or below freezing. Problems with mist too, especially in Northern England. Tomorrow evening, this front pushes eastwards. Behind it is milder air, represented here by yellow colours. Through tomorrow, that air will make inroads into the colder air, the blue colours you can see over in the past few days. Tomorrow a different feel to the weather, cloudier, rain, but milder at times. For sunday morning, dry, bright and frosty, especially across eastern areas. That cloud already building further west and eventually bringing outbreaks of rain eastwards through the day. Especially through norterhn ireland, westerns scotland, north england and wales. Highs tomorrow, 11 celsius, feeling milder than recently. That band of cloud and rain continues on its journey eastwards through tomorrow. Some eastern areas may not see the rain until after dark, but things become cloudier, murkier, the cloud base lowering into mist and outbreaks of rain as we go into monday. Some of that likely to linger across eastern and southeastern parts of england. Temperatures up to 11 celsius, so we start the week mild, but that doesnt last long, because slowly the yellow starts to appear, as do the westerly winds and an easterly wind through next week. Notice the blue is returning, once again, turning colder. So after a mild, cloudy, misty start, easterly winds, turning colder and becoming mainly dry. Good evening. Vicki young, thank you. In the last hour, ukip have voted to remove their leader henry bolton. 63 of Party Members supported the motion of no confidence, following the controversy over racist messages sent by his then partner. Racist messages sent our Political Correspondent alex forsyth is in birmingham. Where alex forsyth is in birmingham. Does this leave ukij the where does this leave ukip . Well, in the short term there is an interim leader, the mep Gerard Batten but beyond that another leadership contest. This will be the partys fourth in just over 18 contest. This will be the partys fourth injust over 18 months, since nigel farage stepped down. There are some here who fear ukip simply wont survive another divisive contest. There are others though, in fact the majority, who thought it was the right decision for henry bolton to because they said his personal life had become too much of a distraction from thejob. So he has now stepped aside. Either way you look at this ukip wasa aside. Either way you look at this ukip was a party that was riding high after the brexit referendum, but since then it has struggled with internal infighting, to find direction, search for leadership and theres a danger now that while today has passed with no high drama there is broad acceptance of this result, in the long term this will only deepen, not heal, the partys divisions. Alex, thank you. President trump has met survivors of wednesdays High School Shooting in florida, in which 17 people died. It comes as pressure mounts on the fbi over the agencys failure to act on a tip off that nikolas cruz, the suspected gunman, might carry out an attack. Nikolas cruz, the suspected gunman, Aleem Maqbool reports. Nikolas cruz, the suspected gunman, some survivors of the School Attack are still being treated in hospital. As he promised, the president visited here, albeit very briefly. Reporter did you see some victims, mr president . Yes, i did, i did indeed and it was very sad, Something Like that could happen, but the jobs the doctors do, the nurses, the hospital, First Responders, Law Enforcement, really incredible. First responders, law donald trump also met officials from the Emergency Services. What he didnt do though was answer any questions about the need to tighten gun laws. Any questions about the need more funerals are being held for the 17 people who died. Most of them teenagers shot in their classrooms. This gun show was advertised close to the very school where the shooting took place. Close to the very school we werent allowed in but spoke to people as they left. Is it worth sacrificing guns if it means there will not be any Mass Shootings or School Shootings . Means there will not be any mass i dont think it would make a difference, thats my honest opinion. Make a difference, if it was proven to me, sure, but unfortunately thats not the case. Sure, but unfortunately life is delicate, you could kill somebody with a pencil. Barking up the wrong tree. Somebody with a pencil. And with more than 300 million firearms in circulation in this country, how do you change a gun culture thats become such an integral part of American Life . Theres been fantastic british support at the sliding centre, and afterwards, our correspeont David Ornstein spoke to yarnolds parents. Com pletely completely unbelievable emotion that lizzie has achieved what she said she was going to achieve, and shes done it. Its just she was going to achieve, and shes done it. She is amazing under pressure, look what she has done. She said she would do this for our country and she has. Lets hear now from the british bronze medallsit laura deas who will be joining Lizzie Yarnold on the podium, an achievement she was still coming to terms with afterwards. I cant believe its happening, this is like a dream. I knew i could do it, and is like a dream. I knew i could do it, and i thought it was going to be attached away at the last minute. When she came down behind me, i couldnt believe it was happening, im so please for lizzy as well. It with a dream chasing pack, i always consistency was going to win the day, and i was pleased at the time that last run. I could barely feel my legs, i was so nervous. I cant believe this is real. Before all that, Great Britain was celebrating a first winter olympic medal on skis. Izzy atkin, whos based in utah in the usa, won a historic bronze in the ski slopestyle. Ben croucher reports. Shes down izzy atkin takes a bronze there of big names in the fields, it could have been anyones. I knew in the fields, it could have been anyones. I knew i had skied the best i could and i was waiting for those last three or four girls to drop. My heart was racing, i cant believe it. Believers, is it, youre and olympic bronze medallist. Leicester and chelsea made it through to the fa cup quarterfinals last night, there are four more fifth round ties today. Weve had three results. It was a cracking game at the hawthorns between West Bromwich albion and fellow premier league side southampton. Saints took the lead, wesley hoedt left completely unmarked from a corner. And more dodgy defending from albion allowed southampton to make it 2 0, a lovely touch from dusan tadic, but he shouldnt have had the chance. But almost instantly, west brom were back in the match, and how about this for a goal from solomon rondon . They really pressed for an equaliser and must be wondering how they didnt get it ahmed hegazi hit the bar and then rondons effort was headed off the line but saints go through 2 1. Afterwards the west brom manger was asked about the spanish training break in the week, in which four of his players apologised for breaking a curfew and allegedly stealing a taxi in the early hours of thursday morning. Of course, its been difficult. In terms of the expedience on the page and the attitudes and the reaction to that, i was pleased with, because it was a difficult day for the players as well, of course. They get a good account of themselves, as only unfortunate to be out of the cup. There was a 15 minute delay to the match between premier League Brighton and coventry because of travel disruption. The league 2 side were the lowest ranked team left in the competiiton they were chasing the game after 15 minutes, Jurgen Locadia with the seagulls opener a goal on his debut after completing a £14 million move from Psv Eindhoven injanuary. Defender Connor Goldson made it 2 0 by half time and Leonardo Ulloa got the third just after the hour mark his first goal since returning to the club. Coventry pulled one back, 3 1 the final score and brighton are through to their first quater final since 1986. The application was exactly what you needin the application was exactly what you need in this type of game. We had to fight for it, we wrap against a coventry side that have dropped a little bit in the last couple of weeks, but had a good season and shows why they are in a good position and the season they have had. We had to fight for it, but i think we were worthy of the win and margin of the win. In the days early tie, championship side Sheffield Wednesday earned a replay against premier league side swansea. There werent a huge number of chances at hillsborough, the hosts almost snatching victory right at the end here. Its swanseas third replay of this cup run, on what was a happy day for their manager, who returned to his former side. First, let me say thank you to the way the fans received me, the staff, the managers, the players and as this is the beauty of football, the nice part. This is the football i dream of all the time. This is a squad nobody wants, the repeat again is something we dont wish, and i believe Sheffield Wednesday are the same, because they are involved in very ha rd same, because they are involved in very hard competitions and this game is one extra game. Huddersfield and Manchester United is the late kick off, they got under way at 5 30. Theres ready been a goal for united, Jose Mourinho letter paul bob as suffering from a cold, but it isa bob as suffering from a cold, but it is a strong team. Romelu lukaku with the open out there. Three minutes then, when a lack to united. In the scottish premiership, Jason Naismith rescued a point for bottom club ross county with a late strike against hearts at victoria park. Hearts took the lead early in the second half thanks to a Kyle Lafferty free kick thats his 14th of the season. Cut with 14 minutes left to play right back naismith grabbbed the equaliser for the home side who are now four points from safety. There were three other games in the scottish premiership today. Hibernian beat second placed aberdeen 2 0. Kilmarnock were 1 0 winners at motherwell while dundee won 2 1 at partick thistle. In the rugby union premiership, leicester tigers boosted their chances of a top six finish after beating harlequins at welford road. The two teams started the day separated by only a point and it was harlequins who opened the scoring. Aloffa aloffa with the try after three minutes. But then matt toomua, who was playing at fly half for the first time, produced an incredible performance contributing 21 points. 33 18 the final score. A couple of other matches there, you can see, i cant, because my eyes arent that good london irish, certainly doomed after losing to saints, and warriors beat gloucester. In the pro14, leinster have pulled clear of scarlets in their battle for the top spot in conference b, after a 20 13 win at the rds stadium. James lowe scored two first half tries, and luke mcgrath got this one at the start of the second half to give the hosts a comfortable lead. A couple of danjones penalties reduced the deficit, but leinster were pretty comfortable winners. Thats all the sport for now. You can find more on all those stories on the bbc sport website. Ill have more for you in the next hour. Next here on bbc news its meet the author. Youve read any of the four mick herron novels featuring jackson lamb, youll know what to expect. Skulduggery, lowlife and the threat of terror. A Political Class self centred, often incompetent, sometimes corrupt. Thymus pressing, the threat is real, and jackson lands ramshackle outfits, never playing by the rules, has to try and save the day. Welcome. Jackson land and his merry men and women are a pretty rough lots, arent they . Sort of, they are ordinary people in many ways. Im keen on these spies having ordinary lives in contemporary london. They dont lead gilded lives, they arent pampered, they are under enormous pressure, there is a terrorist threat in this book. Will go into that in some detail, but not too much in order not to spoil it. But they are rough in the way they deal with each other . What strikes we is that, very seldom, are they really nice to each other . Very seldom, yes. But there are certain bonds that develop. Not as a group, very much, but there are pairings throughout the series. And i like to think in the group seems, i always have at least one scene where eve ryo ne have at least one scene where everyone is there always once. On those occasions, we do reach some kind of harmony, usually when working on a problem. It may be harmonious in that sense, and they do care about each other and help each other, but you never get them saying, what are you really like . They seem to be driven by a desire not to show too much of themselves. Do you think that is a characteristic of people who find themselves in that world . |j characteristic of people who find themselves in that world . I think it might bea themselves in that world . I think it might be a characteristic of people who work in offices. I focus on the ordinariness of these people. They are spies, but to an extent, they could be anything, really. The relationships are determined by the fa ct relationships are determined by the fact that theyre all frustrated by their ambitions in their careers and all have to Work Together and dont wa nt all have to Work Together and dont want to. And we met any of them in the streets, we would have no idea what it is by the way they behaved, which is the point. Indeed, i was looking around the tube this morning looking around the tube this morning looking for characters. Looking around the tube this morning looking for characterslj looking around the tube this morning looking for characters. I went give too much away, because it is a tense plot. There is a blackmail threats made against someone, its made directly by someone who, to put it mildly, is high in the intelligence industry. Do you think that, in that one, get happiness directly is that . Certainly, yes. A realthreat, we have this photograph, and i think we can say this involves someone whos involved in cross dressing, and therefore is going to produce an embarrassing series of stories in the papers, the question is, will he brazen it out and say, this is me, 01 brazen it out and say, this is me, or will he folds at the threat of blackmail . Part of the reason for introducing a plotline is was introduced it in introducing this unpleasant character to have some integrity and bravery, heres facing a decision to tough it out or cave. So the decision he partly makes to tough it out indicate theres a core of integrity in the character. When writing a character in circumstances like that, you try to put yourself in that position and ask what you would do . Always, i try to write characters from the inside out. You see what lamb does and says, but you never get to know what he thinks and feels. To someone who hasnt read the four preceding books and is perhaps going to pick this one up and maybe go back, how would you describe jackson lamb . and maybe go back, how would you describe jackson lamb . I think the best way to describe them would be to meet him, to enter this department of the secret service where failures get the signs, you have to go round the back of the building and through a door that jams, and up the stairs until you reach the top attic. When you open the door, you find a dark room with no natural light, a very large man with his feet on the desk, the ebb with his feet on the desk, the ebb with the noxious, because he smokes and drinks, heres aggressively flatule nt. And drinks, heres aggressively flatulent. Thats how he marked his territory. Do you know jackson flatulent. Thats how he marked his territory. Do you knowjackson lamb very well yet, or argue still discovering him . Still discovering him, but although in the book working on at the moment, there is more revealed about him ever before. Hes saying things he has never said before. What will we learn about and that we dont know . A bit more about his past, i think thats the courts to the character of lamb. There is a sense in which were island lie ask the question, how did he end up here . We know we dont know the whole story. Thats partly because i dont know it yet either. Wasnt deliberate to conceal his background, its just that as you tease that this character, you discovered as well there was a mystery about him that you share with the reader . I think so. The character was never meant to take the central role he has come today, but cynicism out him, i realised there was opportunity is there to write in a way i never had before, winning an injection of humour into the books and also that larger than life character who the books and also that la rger than life character who has the books and also that larger than life character who has a past which is cloaked in mystery. The other fascinating thing about this story, and it is quite unusual, is that it is set notjust in the contemporary world, a london principally where the threat of a terrorist act is ever present, but hed been very specific, there has been a referendum on brexit. There are political figures been a referendum on brexit. There are politicalfigures in here who dare not a resemblance in a imitative way, but a broad resemblance to character actors we might recognise on the little spectrum, not as individuals, but people with a point of view. That is a bold thing to do . It didnt seem to me at the time that was the case. I was simply writing about the world ifind i was simply writing about the world i find myself in the back the novel had been in preparation since before the referendum, i didnt start writing until afterwards. That his lot of things, obviously. I hadnt foreseen the result of the referendum, i think few people dead. Dane paterson this happens, things became clear. It became clear from some of the terrified reactions from the cabinet ministers who orchestrated this, the current as of the Prime Minister resigning, and the Prime Minister resigning, and the backstabbing of the following leadership election, we went through a long period of fasting chaos. That is the background to the book. London rules is a thriller, but the backdrop is where we have all been living. Finally about this book and the others, you resist very deliberately, i think, the others, you resist very deliberately, ithink, the the others, you resist very deliberately, i think, the idea that on the last page, everything conveniently tied up. Its all over. Maybe something has happened that avoids a cataclysm, but the idea that calm has been restored is not really one youre comfortable with, is its . Wollaton estate of ongoing tension, that cant be solved by a final chapter. We live in a state of ongoing tension. So you say, be prepared to be disturbed and i think you can relax when its over . Yes. Thank you very much. Hello. A different sort of day tomorrow. More cloud around.
