Schools should play a bigger role in preparing children for social medias emotional demands as they move from primary to secondary school, englands childrens commissioner says. The leader of the council in windsor is calling for police to take action against what he called aggressive begging before the Royal Wedding in may. Britains andy murray pulls out of the Australian Open after failing to recover from an ongoing hip injury. He hasnt played a competitive match since wimbledon last summer. Good morning and welcome to bbc news. Donald trumps lawyers have intervened in his bitter row with his former chief of staff steve bannon. Theyve threatened him with legal action for speaking to the author of an explosive new book about the president which, amongst other claims, describes him as being unprepared for thejob, poorly informed about the basics, and ridiculed behind his back. In the book by the journalist michael wolff, mr bannon was quoted as describing the president s son donald junior as treasonous and unpatriotic for meeting russians during the campaign. Mr trump responded, accusing his former strategist of losing his mind, after he lost his job at the white house. Our north america correspondent peter bowes reports. They were once as thick as thieves. Steve bannon helped to shape the America First campaign that elected donald trump. In the white house, he was a key player. He had the ear of the president. But his job as chief strategist was short lived. He promised to be the president s wingman outside but this book reveals a different story. The most damaging claim is that steve bannon viewed a meeting between donald trump, jr and a group of russians during the campaign and considered it treasonous. Also a meeting between Paul Manafort and jared kushner. The three senior guys in the campaign thought it was a good idea to meet with a Foreign Government inside trump tower in the Conference Room on the 25th floor with no lawyers, bannon is quoted as saying. He adds that after the meeting they should have called the fbi immediately. The president has hit back in a scathing statement. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders has condemned the contents of the book as completely untrue. I think it is a ridiculous accusation and i am sure we have addressed many times here before. The book also says the steve bannon believes the russians were taken after the meeting to meet donald trump. The president has always denied that happened. With the Ongoing Investigation into possible russian collusion in the president ial election, this explosive row between donald trump and his once trusted ally has left washington stunned. Peter bowes, bbc news. There are more revelations in the book. Wolff describes the amazement and dismay in the trump camp at his november 2016 election win. He says a befuddled trump morphing into a disbelieving trump and then into a horrified trump. Suddenly, donald trump became a man who believed that he deserved to be president. Michael wolff also claims that trump did not enjoy his own inauguration. He was angry that a level stars had snubbed the event. Visibly fighting with his wife, who seemed on the verge of tears. The first ladys office rejects this claim, saying that mrs trump supported her husbands bid for president and was happy when he won. The book also purports to lift the lid on ivanka trumps secret president ial ambitions. Saying that jared and ivanka decided to accept roles in the west wing over the advice of almost everyone they knew and that if sometime in the future the opportunity arose, she ivanka would be the one to run for president. Meanwhile another claim in the book that tony blair warned Donald Trumps aides uk intelligence may have spied on him, and that blair was angling for a post election middle east adviser role is categorically absurd according to the former Prime Minister. Hes been speaking to the bbc. This story has we pointed out is a com plete this story has we pointed out is a complete fabrication, literally from beginning to end, i have never had such conversation in the white house, outside of the house. Have you met jared 7 house, outside of the house. Have you met jared . Of course, we discussed the middle east Peace Process , discussed the middle east Peace Process, that part of the story is untrue, i wasnt angling for a job. You dont want a job . untrue, i wasnt angling for a job. You dont want a job . I did the quartet role. I am active on the middle east process, i have no desire for an official position. The story, it is a sort of reflexionion to me on the state of modern politics, this is a story that is an invention and is half way round the world, with conspiracy theories attached to it. That is modern politics. That is modern politics. The latest figures showing how hospitals in england are coping with the demands of winter will be published this morning. Yesterday the Health Secretary jeremy hunt apologised to patients after hospitals were told to delay tens of thousands of non urgent operations and out patient appointments so the Health Service can cope with the winter pressures. Our health editor, hugh pym, reports. The weekly figures from nhs england covering the last seven days in december will include the proportion of hospital beds occupied, the number of a e units which had to divert ambulances to other hospitals, and serious flu cases. Nhs leaders say flu is on the increase and there are concerns a major outbreak will develop, putting more pressure on a system already under great strain. The figures no longer include hospitals at the highest state of alert, indicating they are struggling to cope. Bbc research has found 20 in england have been at that level this week compared to a handful at this time last year. I want to apologise for the fact that we have had regrettably to postpone a number of operations. We are trying to do it differently this year. Last year, we cancelled a lot of operations at the very last minute. So people got a call the day before to say their operation was not going ahead. That is obviously very undesirable. So we want to do it in a much more planned way. When you have ambulances backed up outside hospitals, hospitals saying they are overcrowded, people waiting for hours and hours on trolleys, it is a crisis and it is because of seven years and the government is simply burying their head in the sand. Tens of thousands of non urgent operations will be cancelled this month to allow senior doctors to deal with emergency cases. Creating a backlog, adding to a lengthening waiting lists for operations like knee and hip replacements. Hugh pym, bbc news. The environment secretary will set out his plans for what he calls a green brexit later today. Michael gove will announce plans to mirror eu subsidies to british farmers worth three billion pounds a year until 202a. The payments will then be replaced by a system to encourage environmental improvements, such as rewards for opening up the countryside to the public, providing new habitats for wildlife and increasing biodiversity. Tony blair has stepped up his criticism of labours approach to brexit, accusing the party of timidity. The former Prime Minister said labour should stop backing the uks withdrawal from the eu, and instead support a second referendum. Our Political Correspondent chris mason is in westminster. Morning to you chris, tell us more about what tony blair has been saying then this brexit is a frequent spinner on the tony blair play list of political intervention, and the chorus, his view the uk should stay in the European Union is familiar too, what is striking here, is the language he adopts in his criticism of the labour leaderships position, he says that overall, on brexit, we are making an error, the contemporary world cannot understand and the generations of the future will not forgive. He suggests that labour should shift to a position where they advocate at the very least, a vote, in parliament at an election or even another referendum on the deal that theresa may strike, at the end of the negotiation with brussels. She says because the labour party is saying we too should brexit, the labour position is pro brexit, the labour position is pro brexit we cannot attack its vast distracktive impact, he suggestions the government is dominated by brexit negotiations, he says make brexit negotiations, he says make brexit a tory brexit, make them own it 100 , show people why brexit isnt and never was the answer, at i isnt and never was the answer, at ry Prime Ministers questions nail the myth, challenge the farce ahead ofa the myth, challenge the farce ahead of a Prime Minister leading our nation in a direction which today she cant bring herself to say she would vote for. The labour leadership and downing street deciding saying nothing is saying something, in response to all of this, they are not commenting. I was chatting to a shadow labour minister in the last hour or so ho was saying this kind of interven intervention was deeply unhelpful, suggesting a minority of labour voters, a substantial chunk, this would seem like the elite in the shadow ministers words trying to say we are ignoring you. And when tony blair says in this statement, make the conservatives own brexit 100 , is really what he is doing looking ahead to you know, post brexit, another election where he thinks labour might be able to fight on a distinctive position on brexit, rather than actually believing that labour will change its position, between now and march 2019 . Yes, he is effectively making the argument that labour has to have a distinctive position and that would be useful as a forthcoming election, his argument is labours current position, which is to say it agrees to that brexit has to be delivered is likely to mean that labour will be forced into a position as and when a deal is arrived at, where labour will have to say we agree with the governments deal that is better than no deal but we would have been better negotiators and in his argument that isnt much of a position for labour to articulate. Instead he says, the if the party was to have a distinctive position it would be able to appeal to the substantial minority of those who voted for remain force, the 48 while pinning the problems associated with brexit exclusively on the conservatives, effectively what this does is like all of the difficulties in the conservative party that we report on, on the whole issue of brexit, labour has its own conservativeties as well. But the binary issue difficulties. The binary issue cuts across party lines and that is what leads to the contorted positions that senior politicians on the two frontbenches have to take, and the arguments you sometimes here. Thank you chris. Authorities in australia have recovered most of a seaplane which crashed near sydney on new years eve, killing five members of a british family and the pilot. The aircraft has been submerged in more than a0 feet of water after coming down in the hawkesbury river. Our correspondent, phil mercer is in sydney. Phil, very sad images seeing those parts of temperature plane being lifted from the river, the plane. Tell us about what has been happening there. We have seen a barge carrying the wreckage close to where we are at westhead travelling through the body of water behind me into pit water northern sydney. It will be taken to canberra for a forensic investigation, now this salvage operation began at dawn here just to the north of sydney. The police using inflatable bags and giant sling, lifting the wreckage off the bottom of the Hawksbury River when it was on the surface, it was lifted out by a crane, on to that barge, a very complicated and time consuming operation, but it is an operation that will lie at the heart of this investigation. And what can you tell us, phil about some reports that are circulating that this plane had been previously used as a crop duster and had been in some way rebuilt after a previous accident . Well, we know thatis previous accident . Well, we know that is the case, we know that this aircraft had been involved in another fatal accident here in australia 20 years ago, it was previously used as an agricultural aircraft, as a crop duster as you say, and it crashed near the New South Wales city 20 years ago, it was allowed to be rebuilt, and it was allowed to be rebuilt, and it was purchased by sydney sea planes in 2006, but the company has said in a previous statement, that all of its aircraft are maintained to a very rigorous standard, and that its pilots are some of the most experienced in the world of. But the history of the aircraft, its maintenance history and the background of the pilot as well as the physical state of the wreckage, will be crucial factors in the investigation and of course, the air crash team is trying to find out how and why a routine sightseeing flight here in australia ended in utter disaster. And relatives of the victim have arrived in australia, we understand. We have hired a statement from the brothers of Richard Cousins, on behalf of the family sending appreciation to those involved in the effort, including the Sydney Water Police and the members of the public who helped on the day of the crash. What more do they hope to do in australia. We heard from the New South Wales police. Inaudible apologies, we seem to have lost the line to phil mercerjust north of sydney. Let me tell you in more detail about the statement from simon and andrew cousins, the brothers of Richard Cousins saying we are grateful for the outbreak of support and love we have received from across the world. We are deeply touched by the tributes in the media and throughout the community. And having arrived in australia, they thank all those involved for their dedication and commitment. The headlines on bbc news anger in the white house Donald Trumps lawyers threaten legal action against his former chief of staff, steve bannon, over explosive claims in a new book on the president. Figures showing how nhs england coped over the Christmas Period are to be released shortly. Non urgent operations and routine hospital outpatient appointments have already been postponed. The environment secretary, michael gove, will explain how the regulations governing food and farming will change after brexit. In sport, andy murray pulls out of the first grand slam of the season, the first grand slam of the season, the Australian Open, as he continues to struggle with a long term hip problem. In injury problem. In injury worries forjohanna konta as well. And late england wickets give australia the advantage on the opening day of the fifth and final ashes test in sydney. I will be back with more on all those stories just after half past. Concerns are being raised that children as young as 11 are becoming increasingly dependent on social media likes and comments in order to feel popular and fit in. The childrens commissioner for england is warning that younger pupils are becoming increasingly anxious about their online image, and are unprepared for how social media use changes as they get older and move into secondary school. Elaine dunkley has this report. With social media in the hands of children, there are challenges of growing up in a digital age. In a report released today called life in likes, there are warnings many children in secondary school are struggling to handle social media as the world expands. Ifeel like im pressured by other people because my friends do it so i have to do it to fit in. You see people, if theyre getting bullied on social media, they dont tell their parents. If you dont tell them, they will never find out. The report shows that as children move schools from primary to secondary, the way they use social media changes. Instead of scoring points playing games, getting likes and comments becomes important and worryingly, they also adapt their offline behaviour to fit an online image. Its a huge pressure on children at a time when there is immense pressures in their life anyway from moving to a new school and knowing that is something that i believe we need to do more about. Secondary school can be a difficult time, when young people feel pressured to fit in. Todays report warns a generation could grow up feeling insecure and unable to cope if left to their own devices. Elaine dunkley, bbc news. Tech firms are working to fix bugs that could allow hackers to steal personal data from computer systems. Google researchers said there were serious security flaws in chips made by intel, amd and arm, affecting devices which use them. The industry has been aware of the problem for months and hoped to solve it before details were made public. With me is our Technology Correspondent rory cellan jones. Good morning to you. Is there any evidence that data has already been stolen . No, there is a statement saying the uk National Cyber Security Centre is aware of the floors in these chips which power millions of devices around the world, but there is no evidence they have been used by hackers to get access to the data. This is a design flaw which potentially allows programmers hackers to get into the very heart of a computer where information is kept which is not usually available to any other part of the computer. That information could include passwords and other sensitive information. Or any of the companies who make these chips saying anything about this . Yesterday, we thought it was just a problem at intel, a security news site found out evidence of this. Then it became aware when google put out its security blog that it affected a whole range of companies. In the background they have known about this floor for a while, and they have been working feverishly to close the door, basically. You dont find a floor and say hey everybody, the door is open, cumin, hackers. You try to close it before you tell anyone about it and get the security patches available. That is why the industry is saying they hoped to sort it out before it was made public and potential hackers will say lets have a go at this and get some data . Yes, i have heard people saying this will swiftly be added to the toolkit of all hackers. It is a biz to be quite difficult to use, but it is such a widespread problem. So many chips are affected, so many devices, but i think it has caused a degree of concern across the industry. Also the cure for it could slow down a lot of computer operations. We know the industry has been aware of the problem for months and has presumably been trying to fix it for months, so who knows how much longer it will take . They are confident they are close to fix it. Some security updates will be issued and the advice is to look out for the updates and take them as quickly as you can. Thank you. Jewellery thought to be worth a Million Pounds has been stolen from an exhibition in italy. Thieves outwitted sophisticated security at the doges palace in venice to steal the jewels, which were on loan from a member of the qatari royal family. Police say at least two thieves managed to de activate an alarm system stealing a brooch and earrings from a reinforced display cabinet, before disappearing into the crowd. A Council Leader has written an open letter calling for action to tackle what he describes as aggressive begging on the streets of windsor. The letter, written by councillor simon dudley, comes ahead of the wedding of prince harry and Meghan Markle, which is taking place in in may. Windsor homeless project described the comments as abhorrent. Joining me now from windsor is edina campbell. Good morning. Tell us more about the comments from simon dudley which have caused controversy . That is right. This has proved to be very controversial. It is just four months before prince harry marries Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle behind me. In this 3 page letter, the councillor has written to the Thames Valley police and Crime Commission setting out his concerns about the level of homelessness and begging in this borough, saying they should be using their legal powers to re m ove should be using their legal powers to remove the number of Homeless People here ahead of the wedding. He has called this aggressive begging and intimidating behaviour, saying homelessness is completely unacceptable. As you can imagine, this has caused anger and upset from Homeless Charities in the area, who have called his comments are borrowed, saying his comments are sickening, that he has used the Royal Wedding as an excuse to target these vulnerable people. Tens of thousands of people are expected to join in the celebrations on may 19 when prince harry marries Meghan Markle here at st georges chapel at Windsor Castle. But a bit like the weather, this letter has caused a dark shadow ahead of the upcoming celebrations. He talks about people begging and choosing to be homeless, saying they have been offered accommodation that they have turned down or other assistance that they have turned down. What evidence is there but that is the case . In his letter, simon dudley does say that the council has invested heavily in the council has invested heavily in the support services to help some of the support services to help some of the 50 or 60 approximately rough sleepers in windsor, saying the support is there, but he goes as far to say that they have chosen not to engage and not to take up that support which has been rejected by some of the charities here in the area, saying it is not out of choice that they want to be homeless, that is the situation they are written. Some of the people from the Charities Say it is completely outrageous that he is trying to remove these people who are in such a vulnerable situation, saying that they should be cleared out, because of this high profile Royal Wedding. Tens of thousands of people are expected to visit on may 19 to see Meghan Markle marry prince harry, but some people have said these comments are unacceptable notjust for the residents, but for the millions of people who do visit windsor every year, to seek sites like this. Thank you. A group on a snowmobile tour in western canada might have been hoping to spot some wildlife amongst the snowdrifts, but they certainly werent expecting to see this. Here you can see the head of a moose peeping out from beneath the powder. It became trapped in deep snow, but the group came to its rescue. Youll be pleased to hear that they managed to dig it free and after around 15 minutes the uninjured moose was back on the loose. Farmers will receive money for protecting the environment. Figures showing how the Health Service in england is coping with the demands of winter will be published later today. They follow the cancellation of thousands of non urgent operations earlier this week to alleviate pressure on front line services. Technology companies are working to repair serious flaws in chips made by intel which could allow hackers to access personal information. And Andrew Murray has pulled out of the australia open as he struggles to recover from an ongoing hip injury. Under the new good morning. Rain delayed the start of play for more than two hour, england who won the toss and chose to bat went from being 88 to one to 95 3. Joe root in partnership steadied the ship. Root led from the front to put england in a better position, making his half century and then went on to make 83 before he was caught superbly. Jonny bairstow replaced him at the crease, but also fell to the new ball he made just 5 runs. Malan still there on 55 not out, with england on 233 for 5. Bairstow opted to go in to bat rather than a night watchman something malan addressed when he spoke afterwards. The decision is not the coachs to make, that is down to batsman, johnny made that decision and good on him for making it. It takes a lot of guts to go against what people normally do, so the new ball he probably felt he was better suited for that. As i said, each to their own, you cant really look back and say, he should have, the end of the day he didnt, he backed himself and got out. It is pretty simple. Andy murray wont be playing in the Australian Open later this month. He announced this morning that he was flying home from to concentrate on his rehabilitation for a long standing hip injury, and said he wasnt yet ready to compete. Lets get more on this now from our tennis correspondent Russell Fuller whos in brisbane for us. Russell, this isnt entirely a surprise but how much of a set back is this for murray . It is another major setback for andy murray, who is so desperate to be able to resume his tennis career, for the love of playing and if at all possible to be competing for the major titles again, but the frustration has hit him this week, of having spent six months doing painstaking rehabilitation and still not being in the condition where he can trust that right hip sufficiently to be able to compete with the very best in the world on the biggest stage of them all. Once he made the decision to pull out of the brisbane tournament and giving us the brisbane tournament and giving usa the brisbane tournament and giving us a few more details on instagram it was inevitable he would fly home, the big question for him now, is does he have little option other than surgery . He is reluctant to do. Is that the best way of getting his career back on track . And injury worries forjohanna konta, another brit pulling out of the Brisbane International this morning. Not for the first time we have seen a british player limping down the corridor towards the press Conference Room. We hope this is just a brief blip forjohanna konta who was playing so well for a place in the semifinal, the third set was very much in balance when she decided to withdraw because of a right hip problem. Now the hope is that this is just perhaps a minor strain ora that this is just perhaps a minor strain or a muscle spasm. She will know more when she is assessed in the morning but there is a doubt over whether she will defend other syd ney over whether she will defend other sydney title next week, and there is also a concern about whether she will be fully fit for the Australian Open which starts in ii will be fully fit for the Australian Open which starts in 11 days time. Kyled munds is not limping by the way. She through to the quarterfinals after a victory in three sets. At least a bit of positive news, thank you for bringing us up to date. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger described the penalty descision against his side in last nights premier league match against chelsea as farcical. The game ended 2 2 at the emirates, in what was one o the most dramatic games of the season so far. Arsenal had gone in front through jack wilshere, but the england midfielders goal was cancelled out by a controversial penalty. Eden hazard converted it for chelsea, to leave Arsene Wenger unhappy. Marcos alonso, then thought hed won it for the blues, before Hector Bellerin got arsenals equaliser in stoppage time. Chelsea stay third behind manchester united, arsenal are five points off the top four. I love football and i would like to talk about football not referees and thats, that would be nice at some stagings but there were also some thrilling homes to concentrate on in the game, werent there . Yes, i think it was a great football game, when you come here, you see football and that is what you want people to talk about. An exciting game for the people watching, this game. Less for us, for me, and yes, also for the players because there is a disappointment at the end, because i think that when you are so close to winning the game. Thats all the sport for now. Ill have more for you in the next hour. Lawyers for President Trump have threatened legal action against his former chief strategist. An explosive new book quotes steve bannon as saying that a meeting between mr trumps son, donald junior, and a group of russians during the Election Campaign was treasonous. The president reacted saying his former strategist had lost his mind when he lost his job. The book make many claims among them that President Trump was unprepared for thejob and that President Trump was unprepared for the job and his wife was in tea rs for the job and his wife was in tears on election night. Let us hear from people who are close to both sides. Raheem kassam is a close advisor to steve bannon and the uk editor of his Breitbart News organisation. He said his boss does have credibility when he described that meeting between donald trumpjunior and russian officials as treasonous. i think when you look at how this book was written, really how any book was written, really how any book like this is written, you know, the author will have posed certain economies to the interview subject, i economies to the interview subject, , and some are hypothetical, for insta nce , and some are hypothetical, for instance they will come with a context, such as if this was discussed in that meeting at this time, and it went on to do xyz does it mean it is trees nous and what have you . And people will give honest answers to those thing, i think that is what happened here. I am not sure you are getting the full context of the conversation, steve bannon was in the pentagon during the reagan administration, he is a naval officer, he understands what the russia threat really is, outside of the sort of Media Obsession over how many facebook ads they took out, so he understands what the geopolitical threat is and i think he takes that very seriously, so when he remarks these people shouldnt have not been in trump tower, taking meetings with Senior Campaign staff without lawyers in the room, i would say that is a fair thing to say. That was the view from the bannan camp. But what of the claim that donald trump never really expected or wanted to win and was horrified when he did . Mica mosbacher, a campaigner for President Trump who works on the trump 2020 advisory committee, said that just wasnt true. I disagree. Anointing steve bannon the king maker is a gross overexaggeration, if anything, trump won because trump outperformed and outworked i7 won because trump outperformed and outworked 17 candidates, he did over 250 rallies and i have been part of bipolitical campaigns and most candidates are scripted and kept in a bubble. President trump has some of the best political instincts i have seen, he was off script. What he said in terms of populism was all trumpism, and like all campaigns, there were advisers that came and went and they had certain roles, at certain times but trump would have won 2016 without steve bannon. Would have won 2016 without steve bannon. Now for a look at some of the business stories around this morning. Im joined by our Business Correspondent jamie robertson. Let us start with debenham, a profit warning there, lots of warnings about various companies at the the moment it is interesting we are getting a varied picture on the high street. Street. Next came out with good figures, debenhams had a bad time. You long at all its sales over the last 17 week, coming up to the end of the year, steals down 2. 6 , then you hone in which particular weeks did badly. It was the post christmas sales did badly. They expected to get £83 million worth of profit, it looks like 5 60 million. Shares are down about 20 , what will it do about it . They have a strategy for new format for the store, they are putting out an experimental stage, to get it better but at the moment we cant see any immediate a nswer to moment we cant see any immediate answer to that. The question of course over whether black friday an impact on the sales. Yes, whether the spending power has run out by the spending power has run out by the time you get to christmas day. There is a warning on low pay from the ifs. It is talking about a minimum wage goes up, that more firms will use robots to replace people. It sound grim. Looking at the ones that are most vulnerable to ta ke the ones that are most vulnerable to take over, taking over by robot, they are saying wholesale and retail trade and manufacturing obviously, the least interesting it is the other end of the scale i find more interesting, the ones which have the most amount of protection, very often the caring industry, communication industry, which require personal, interpersonal skill, those thing, have the best chance of surviving the robot revolution if and when it come, the other interesting side about this, is that some people see this as a problem, some people see it as a solution, some people say that this is going to put a lot of people out of work as the National Living wage comes up of work as the National Living wage comes up to £9 by 2020 employers will find it too expensive to hire them, so they will say spend a lot of money, get automation in and they will be out of a job, that is a problem they say, other people look at it and say the the economy will create other jobs for those at it and say the the economy will create otherjobs for those people, and, we need to invest that money in automation, to improve productivity, productivity as been the big buzz word, what is wrong with this economy, we dont produce things efficiently, people say what we need is automation and pause we have had cheap labour, it has prevented us from investing and now this is going to happen and it is about time too. That is the other way of looking at it. But you have, you pay your money and you take your choice. It is a fascinating discussion. One other story you want to talk to us about fat cat thursday. Explain to viewers what it is. How long does it take, the average fat cat, which is the chief executive of a ftse 100 company, the average xeec chief executive, how long does it take him to earn. Or her. Or her. There are some hers. Not enough. How long does it take them to make the same amount of money as the average employee, the average employee makes just over £28,000, round about lunchtime the average ftse 100 chief executive will have made that amount of money. Four days into the new year. They have to be working about 12 hours a day, they have to start work on the second january, and i9 day, they have to start work on the second january, and 19 weeks holiday, there are ways of working it out but it is round about lunchtime. Its a big differential. Neither you nor i have it. Thank you very much. One hundred years ago women, albeit only those over the age of 30, were given the right to vote in britain for the first time. It paved the way for the introduction of universal suffrage ten years later, which saw all women win equal Voting Rights to men. Jayne mccubbin reports from manchester, the home of the Suffragette Movement. You dont own me. Im notjust one of your. 100 years ago, women, some women, jumped the very first hurdle towards equality, a movement which began here in the city of manchester. In fact, here, in this very house. This is where it all began, in this home, around cups of tea. This is where the Suffragette Movement was born. Helen pankhursts great grandmother, emmeline, was the leader of that movement. Emmelines great granddaughter says the fight for equality is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago. Obviously, weve made huge strides, but you believe nowhere near enough . Absolutely. In terms of representation, we now have 33 of women in parliament, so we are getting there, but we are not there yet. You can ook at women at work and see how far they have got, and in homes and in relationships, in terms of attitudes to womens health, mental health, for example. There are so many areas and we can see how far weve got. Every time i look at the analysis, there is still so much still to be done. When it comes to political representation, there is still a gender gap, with women still overshadowed by men. And interestingly, there is still a gender gap in how they use their vote too. Back in the 1940s, women were more likely to vote conservative, men more likely to vote labour. Now, we still see that among older voters, but if we look at younger voters, so, for example, under the age of 40, women are much more supportive of labour. And what is it down to . In the aos and 50s, the conservatives were the anti austerity party. They were against post war rationing, for example, whereas that has completely changed today. Thats the labour party. Thats the labour party, exactly. So women tend to have been more supportive of parties favouring social spending and more redistribution, and which party that is has changed over time. Arguably, the womans vote has led to a Stronger Public realm, with Better Health care and better education, but what is the burning issue for women today . What is your daughters name . Delilah. If you could vote for one thing that would make delilahs life better growing up, what would you vote for . Can i give you a ballot paper . Id make catcalls a crime. 0k. Cheaper sanitary products. Get rid of social media. While some womens issues have changed over the last 100 years, some have resolutely remained the same. What would you vote for . Equal pay. Equal opportunities in the workplace. Good luck, delilah. You dont own me. Do you worry about the world in which you are sending your 22 year old daughter out in . When i think of womens rights, i feel slightly schizophrenic about it. You know, on the one hand, young girls today have so many opportunities. You see them bubbling with potential, with a sense of self, knowing that they can do whatever they want to. Dont tell me what to do. And dont tell me what to say. On the other hand, you also see trends which are very worrying. The sexualisation, exposure to violence, the need to do it all. And i feel that the world is still a very difficult place for women. 100 years since the first votes were secured by the first women, real equality is still being fought for.
