Country at the moment, and for the remainder of this week, it looks as though its going to be windy, with gales at times. This is the story and this is why it looks so bleak. There is a lot of cloud and the rain is sweeping from west to east eddies and once that clears away its going to be replaced by more. But this time it will be the strength of the wind. This is storm eleanor and on its southern flank we are likely to see gusts of up to 80mph through the night to night. Probably Clearing Northern ireland around midnight, heading towards a southern scotland and north west england and north wales. 80mph is enough to cause disruption. The strong bit of the winds easing to the east of the pennines as we go through the morning. For the far north of scotla nd morning. For the far north of scotland tomorrow morning, slightly lighter winds and a colder start, a little frost around as well. Into northern ireland, southern scotland, north west england, we are still likely to see gusts of 40mph at least in the rush hour tomorrow morning. Down to the south west we could see gusts of up to 60mph with some really rough seas and high sided vehicles take note. The winds will slowly ease as we go through the day, but its going to be blustery. Driving, squally showers, some of them heavy with some hail and thunder. Maybe by the end of the day we might see some sunshine. Temperatures lower in the far north east of scotland. Riff lama to start the day on thursday but another area of low pressure will gradually move in. Again, gales are likely to drive that rain up through the English Channel and across the southern half of england. It will lingerfor southern half of england. It will linger for quite southern half of england. It will lingerfor quite some southern half of england. It will linger for quite some time in northern ireland, central and southern scotland. On the leading edge we could have some snow mixed in as well. That area of low pressure will take its time to clear away but it will slowly do so, and as we get towards the weekend, there is the potential that the winds might swing round to a northerly, which will bring something just a little bit colder, and hopefully something a bit more settled thats all from the bbc news at one. On bbc one we nowjoin the bbcs news teams where you are. Good afternoon. Welcome to bbc sports sceptre. Welcome to bbc sports sceptre. Andy murray has called his rehab for a long term hip injury demoralising after pulling out of the Brisbane International ahead of his first match this week. The former world number one hasnt played competitively sincejuly, and admits hes considering having surgery. Heres our tennis correspondent russell fuller. This Instagram Post gives us a real insight into how he is feeling and how traumatised he has been, by this inability to do what he loves most, which is to compete against the other best players in the world on a tennis court. The frustration for murray is that the advice he was given seems to have been very much that rehab is his best option and he would always work incredibly hard at making sure he has done everything in his power to recover as quickly as possible. But once he has put that to the test against some other of the top players in the world here in brisbane this week, he has realised even the best part of six months rest has not got his hip to where it needs to be, therefore even though he is still does not want to go down this route he is saying he may have to consider surgery, which would probably mean three months out before he starts to make his return. If he did go down that route, it would be the summer at the earliest before we saw him back on a tennis court. Meanwhile, kyle edmund is safely through to the last 16 in brisbane. The british number two came from a set down, to beat canadian teenager denis shapovalov. Edmund will play south koreas hyeon chung the world number 58 in the last 16. Johanna konta also won her match in brisbane, and is through to the quarterfinals. Konta came from a set down to beat aila tomlajanovic in three sets. This is kontas first tournament with her new coach michaeljoyce. Stoke a re stoke are considering the future of their manager mark hughes, they 16th in the premier league table, two points above the relegation zone, having won only two of their last 12 games. The board havent yet met formally, to discuss the managers position, and hughes is preparing the team for saturdays fa cup game at coventry as usual. 16 time darts World Champion phil taylor says rob cross has a big future in the sport, after losing to him in the final of the pdc World Championships last night. It was taylors last match before he retired, but cross, who was working as an electrician this time last year, looked unfazed by the momentous occassion, landing this 153 checkout early on. And there was no let up from cross, he took the title by seven sets to two. Cross only made his pro debut in february last year. Now, ahead of the fifth and final ashes test, starting on wednesday evening, fast bowler Mitchell Starc is confident of making the australian starting 11. Starc is the leading wicket taker in the series, but missed the fourth test with a bruised heel. Meanwhile, england opener marc stoneman says that drawn last test has given the team the boost they need ahead of the final match in the series. I think its given us confidence going forward. The work we have done earlier in the series has eventually come through, to a certain degree. But ultimately, we want to win a game of cricket. The big thing for us is we have been able to win the couple of key moments and hold off the pressure when they have had big partnerships or a couple of wickets. I think a ten wicket win in brisbane probably shows. It was a bit closer than that, same in adelaide. I think 3 0 is probably a fairscore. Thats all the sport for now. You can find more on all those stories on the bbc sport website. More in the next hour. As weve been hearing, protests have been taking place at around 30 railway stations across the uk, following the biggest increase in fares in five years. Average ticket prices have risen by 3. 4 , with many season Ticket Holders now having to pay more than £100 a year extra. The rmt union has been holding protests at dozens of stations. Earlier ben brown spoke to its general secretary mick cash and asked him about the governments position that price increases are needed to fund rail investment. The government are hiding the fact that in our private tied Railway Network it is expensive and the fare payers and the taxpayers are paying for privatisation, if we didnt have such a Fragmented Network we wouldnt spend millions going to the shareholders who pocket it, we could be using that money to reinvebs in the rail network and keep fares low 01 the rail network and keep fares low or cut them. But again they are saying they need, i hear what you saying they need, i hear what you say about privatisation, but that is the system we v they are saying they need modernisation like the crossrail project. The thameslink rail service and so on. Well, yes, the point we are making is you can have both. You dont have to have a situation where passengers have to keep increasingly sea fare increases because it is the privatisation, thatis because it is the privatisation, that is one of the most expensive fa re systems that is one of the most expensive fare systems in europe and a system thatis fare systems in europe and a system that is very expensive, you could save a billion pound a year if you didnt have it. That money, a billion pound of year could be re i nvested billion pound of year could be re invested into billion pound of year could be re i nvested into better billion pound of year could be re invested into better facility, more trains and keeping fares down 01 more trains and keeping fares down or cutting then. That is the point we are making. The system is keeping the increasing we see today. Some people might say the railways are not that reliable but part of that is industrial action by your union, could you say to the commuters and passengers in 2018 perhaps there will be less disruption on the railways 7 will be less disruption on the railways . We dont want disruption, we dont want to be in a situation where we take strike action, we are ina where we take strike action, we are in a situation where we are Running Campaign where they are going to cut the guards off the trains because they want to put profit before safety. To have a safe network, have profitable which has safety at its heart, we have a situation where they cut costs an get rid of the guards, the choice is there, the private operators want to make their money, want to pay their shareholder and the people who pay for that are the taxpayers, the fare payers and the taxpayers, the fare payers and the members. These prices on tickets and the rise, the department for transport say they are capped in line with inflation. Well, yes, the point is that actually, peoples wages are not going up the same way as fare rises and again, we are in a situation where some people are getting priced off the railways because particularly if you a row paid, somewhere in the region of 20 of your income is going to be spent on fare rise, there is an alternative. It is to renationalise the railway, use the money that is being saved from that and re invest it back in to the industry, and better investment or kit fares or reducing then. There are alternatives to this and this government wont see that, and wont allow it to happen. Are you saying there should be no railfare rises at all today . Well i am saying that there is an opportunityf at all today . Well i am saying that there is an opportunity f you wanted to to turn round, and get rid of privatisation and use the money from that to save. You have told us that to save. You have told us that already. You said that already. Iam asking that already. You said that already. I am asking you, are you saying there should be no price rises at all on rail ticket prices . Well, there should be no price rises at all on railticket prices . Well, you know, at the owned the day i am trying to say the system we are got is expensive, it is costings people an arm and a leg in some cases and there is an alternative, the alternative is we should have a a nationalised rail industry. That isnt going to happen. That isnt going to happen unless there is a change of government, is it . Under this government . But it can happen if they wanted it to. At the moment you can get a situation where the rail franchises, they want to keep giving them more and more money, they could take them back, east coast is an example of that. And use all that money to be re invested or keep fares low or kut. Cut. As weve been hearing, 13 monkeys have been killed in a fire at woburn safari park in bedfordshire. The monkey, the car and find it fun. The monkey, the animal keepers know the monkey, they are, they are devastated it is a catastrophic vent they have lost them this morning. I understand they are kept inside the house, over the winter. They are not, they are allowed out during the day and overnight because of the temperature drop. Understandably staff are devastated, how are they being cared for. This morning the heads of departments, they spoke to the staff and again we will talk to them later. This is the station that has had a £1 billion revamp over the last five yea rs, £1 billion revamp over the last five years, and when you talk to ministers about why we have these rail increases one of the big reasons they say is because we need to make sure the network is modernised to cope with the demand of everyone using it. There are mixed views. Some people who think these train fare increases are ok for them, was a they see things need to change. Others say hang on, i have been on an overcrowded train again. I havent got a seat. I dont wa nt to again. I havent got a seat. I dont want to pay more money when i dont get the service i expect. Mark, i know you are pleased to see this done on time and all thatjazz, looking at the Bigger Picture can you understand why some are miffed that train fares have gone up. The christmas and new year festivities now long gone. Gone. Grey skies today and there has been rain, some of it heavy and it looks as though the week is shaping up is going to be windy, stormy with rain round as well there is is a blanket of cloud across the country, hence the grey story today, and theres been rain, some heavy. But it is only going to be replaced by another area of low pressure, this is storm eleanor and it arrives through the night. The reason it has been a named storm is due to the strength of the wind. So as we go through the jo night period we will see gusts of winds in excess of 70mph, easing away from northern ireland, pushing into the scottish border, and the north west of england, so 70, 80mph winds not out of the question and that will be Strong Enough to cause some disruption and certainly, the potential for disruption for your Early Morning travelling. On wednesday morning in scotland it wont be too bad. We will still see at 8. 00 winds in excess of 30, 40mph. There will be a scattering of showers out to the west, some will push further inland. Quieter in terms of the showers but the wind strengths will be stormy and that will make for rough seeing as well. As we go through the afternoon that wind will continue to drive the showers in from the west. Some pushing inland and some merging together. Here we will see temperatures in double figures so let us move out of wednesday, a slight lull in proceedings through wednesday into thursday. We do it allagain, wednesday into thursday. We do it all again, another area of low pressure pushing in from the south west. With the south westerly wind it will be mild but it will be wet at times. Heavy rain, it will lingerfor wet at times. Heavy rain, it will linger for a wet at times. Heavy rain, it will lingerfor a time. And the temperatures here a little more disappointing. The wind direction will change as we move into friday. A northerly kicks in. That will turn things colder and possibly a little wintry. Take care. Hello, youre watching afternoon live, im simon mccoy.
