Bbc northwest tonight obvious at the Sports Personality of the year. Hello and welcome to viewers on the bbc news channel to the echo arena here in liverpool, a magnificent view this evening, and this is what its all about. The bbc Sports Personality of the year trophy, 12 contenders who you have just seen, one of them will be crowned the winnerfor one of them will be crowned the winner for 2017 one of them will be crowned the winnerfor 2017 within one of them will be crowned the winner for 2017 within the space of a couple of hours this evening. We are going to be chatting to a lot of the stars from sporting scenes and entertainment scenes, as they make their way into the main event. First of all, before we get our first guest, lets take a lack at some of the amazing sports moments of 2017 some of the amazing sports moments of 2017 take a look. Some of the amazing memories of 2017 which will be celebrated here tonight in liverpool at the echo arena at this years Sports Personality of the year where, as you can see, the stars have really come out. I think because we are one of the second seeds, the way it works, you get two teams you are probably going to be favourites against and play one team ranked higher, so its in our hands now. Also what i would like to know, obviously footballers up for tonights award, harry kane, will you be getting your mobile out and voting for him tonight . There are some really good people. Ive met a couple of the other guys whove had incredible years as well. So a lot of World Champions. Its a high bar. Great for harry that hes in there, hes had a fantastic season. From your point of view, we were talking whilst watching the highlights, you have never seen this before . No, not this close. You know, goodness me, im looking at some of the names 1960, i wasnt quite around for that, but its such an iconic trophy, great to see nit the flesh. Its amazing. What year was it when you won . 2000 just after the sydney olympics. Does it feel a long time ago . A very long time ago. That was my last year of competing of 25, the last 17 years have gone reasonably quickly. Obviously you have been there, so what will the contenders be feeling tonight and how important is it to win . I was nominated a couple of times before, so its excitement, is it going to be me, oh god what am i going to say if i do win, and the year that i did win so they tell me, just afterwards, it was very one sided on my side and eve ryo ne was very one sided on my side and everyone knew they was going to win apart from myself that was sitting there extremely nervous. I spoke reasonably well but forgot to mention my wife. Never forget to mention my wife. Never forget to mention your wife. Not such a good thing when shes your team doctor as well. But no, it was a great evening and what a thrill to win that trophy. For a lot of sportsmen and women, this sort of thing doesnt come necessarily naturally to them walking up and down the red carpet. I guess you are a bit more used to it now . Ive been on two or three, but sports people tend to be more introverted, related to the actors and performers, they tend to be more extroverted. There is a crossover either way but most sports people tend to be more combiet and reserved in some ways. Are we allowed to ask you who you might think will win tonight . There is two i wouldnt mind winning, aj being one and adam peaty being the other. Theyve both had fantastic years and one thing that i always try and say is that Sports Personality should be about what youve actually done in that year, not what you did in a lifetime. Maybe my award was more lifetime. Maybe my award was more Lifetime Achievement than in my one year. Very well deserved it was anyway. Thank you very much for stopping to talk to us. We were competing in the Invictus Games in toronto, but its a special night be invited along. Its going to be amazing. What were the Invictus Games like. It looked amazing . It was. The atmosphere was incredible. I competed in the 100 metres, shot putt and discus and the atmosphere for every event was invisible. The support was second to none. So much work of the Invictus Games is down to prince harry of course, have you had a wedding invite . That would be nice. No, that would be nice but we are obviously all in training already for sydney next year so we have got the trials in april then the selection process. We find out in may whether we are going to syd ney in may whether we are going to sydney next year, but i think it will be around the time of the royal wedding, so you never know all the best and good luck. Tonight is a celebration of sport but, as we mentioned, its also a celebration about professional athletes winning medals but also those that dont always get mentioned and recognised. I hear you are coaching monday, tuesday, witnesses, thursday . Yes. Ididnt i didnt have the opportunities to get involved with as much netball when i was younger until i was sort of16, 17, so when i was younger until i was sort of 16, 17, so to give these girls the opportunity now and to give my two daughters the opportunity to play and get involved in netball at a younger agejust play and get involved in netball at a younger age just makes play and get involved in netball at a younger agejust makes me play and get involved in netball at a younger age just makes me so play and get involved in netball at a younger agejust makes me so happy to see them and get the Parents Feedback to say how much they love netball and how much they love being pa rt netball and how much they love being part of the club and how much theyve made new friends. You can win things professionally in your sports life but what does it mean to win this award . It would be fantastic to be appreciated by all of the public for all sports as well, its something i would be very proud of so yes, footballs obviously my sport, but ive always loved doing every sport when i was a kid growing up in school as well. Its amazing to be here. You have captained england recently which is a huge honour, im guessing . It is. Again, as a kid growing up, thats what you dream of doing. To have done that and to have scored as well on the debut, it was incredible, a moment ill never forget. We have had the youth teams coming through earlier. Theyve had a fantastic year. I became word champion and thought, this is giving back to eve ryo ne and thought, this is giving back to everyone that supported med through the bad time. To come out the other end and now be nominated for this award, if you would have said that four years ago, i would have told you you were making it up. How tough is that. Sam you will probably appreciate this with your hockey background, you must have times when you feel very alone and down. Is it very difficult to drag yourself back 7 very difficult to drag yourself back es, very difficult to drag yourself back up . Yes, of course, everyone has bad times, where its hard to get up in the morning, especially after sochi, but you have got to focus on eve ryo ne but you have got to focus on everyone supporting you, sending you the love. You have little goals to reach every day, that is what keeps me going. Sochi for you, you train, you compete, get up at 6am for that 0lympic moment. What things have you got in store coming up for the next politician, you have just got in store coming up for the next politician, you havejust had selection, things like that . Yes, im so excited, only got told this week. They were never going to not pick you . You never know imjust so pick you . You never know imjust so excited. I want to go out and enjoy the olympics. Sochi was horrible, i didnt enjoy it, i got myself in should have good shape and i know i can win but mainly i want to enjoy it band happy in front of the home crowd and not have a miserable face on the whole time so im looking forward to getting out there. How was that, the whole experience, what was it like for you in strictly . It was a roller coaster, absolutely incredible. There are many ups, a few downs, the training can be tricky, but it was so much fun. I think the only bad thing is that i didnt get to enjoy the party as much as i wanted to because i had to be up to come here. You had to save yourself . To a point, yes. We are grateful for that. Its very different though isnt it that kind of challenge because you are used to a sporting challenge but you are doing it for yourself then really arent you, youve got a partner this time . When you are on the track its just you and obviously you can let down your country but really the pressure is just on you. Whereas going out there, i dont want to let 0ti going out there, i dont want to let oti down. There is a lot of nerves. So far out of my comfort zone. Are you surprised how well you did then because you did well and lasted well . Thats down to oti and her amazing choreography and he pushed me. She did amazingly well. She was meant to be here today, where is she . She enjoyed the party a little bit. Ssh she might be lying in bed somewhere we should talk a bit about sport as well and you have been nominated for this. How do you feel . Absolutely incredible. The biggest award for a sportsman. Its such an honour. The names that go on the list is insane so be in the mix is incredible. Do you get time to rest because you have had a full on year. What is christmas going to mean . Im going to have a couple of weeks to chill out. Christmas at mums, new years at my girlfriend sallys parent, so that will be nice, but lots of sleep, a bit of alcohol, so yes, i need to stop eating so much though because ive already put on weight. Really, doing strictly you have put on weight . Definitely. To do it later in rio with all the pressure, mens amputees sprinting is one of the deepest classes out there and to come back after year of injury and to win was amazing, he so deserves to be on the list. When you are sitting in the commentary box and paula as well, you must take great pride in the way paralympics has come on in recent years, its very much on a level with the able bodied teams . Very much on a level with the ablebodied teams . As tanni was saying, in all sports, ablebodied teams . As tanni was saying, in allsports, regular or paralympicsneeds its saying, in allsports, regular or pa ralympicsneeds its heroes, johnny is one of our, tanni was for a long time. We have been able to integrate the paralympic events, particularly in athletics. We had the ipc champs held in this stadium just before and you saw full stadia for both championships which is testimony to, i guess, what the public appreciate. Theyre watching top level sport. It doesnt matter whether its a paralympian or able bodied doesnt matter whether its a pa ralympian or able bodied athlete, they understand they re pa ralympian or able bodied athlete, they understand theyre watching people at top of their game which is why they come here and watch it on tv as well. Paula, one of the contenders this evening who isnt here, mo farah, how amazing has he been now that hes brought his track to an end . Hes closing one chapter and closing one very successful chapter, so successful that we actually find ourselves looking back this year and thinking, he didnt quite match what he did in the years before that because that was outstanding to be able to put those doubles back to back year after year. I think hes now probably relishing the challenge of the going into something new that he needs to learn, find his feet a bit and give himself Something Else to attack that motivates him that bit more 110w. That motivates him that bit more now. It was amazing having the worlds back in london. How amazing was that to see everyone back in the spirit of the paralympics . It was really special on so many levels. Athletics had been through a rough time so to bring it back to a country that really supports and understands athletics and fills the stadiums, that gave it a real boost in. Britain it was brilliant to see performances like the relay boys just come through and grab that and just come through and grab that and just really kind of reignite all of that passion that we saw in 2012 and give people a chance to live it again. There is no doubt who is the fastest contenderfor is no doubt who is the fastest contender for Sports Personality of the year award, 2017. It is of course Lewis Hamilton. He won his fourth world title this year and he also won the admiration of another motor sport giant, sirjackie stuart. I think 2017 has been the best year for Lewis Hamilton with regards to winning in the manner in which hes done it and so forth. For me, the most enjoyable race i ever saw Lewis Hamilton running was one that he didnt win, in fact it was the grand prix in barcelona where he came through the very back, started in the pit lane in fact, came through and didnt get on the podium but nearly did. That made the race because he was just chopping everybody off, as he went along. He has a huge gift of natural talent. What you have got to do is match that natural talent with what is up here in the brain cells and that hes developed as hes gone along. This year is the best example of that. Anthony joshua is such a big name, for example, because hes a huge sport, we are still a minority sport that is a bit like your mum and dad in the stands and thats pretty much it. Its bound to happen when you have a small sport but adams had a fantastic year. For him it would be an honour to be the winner but hes honoured to be nominated. You look stunning tonight. The world of cycling is always very well represented at this awards event and this years contender is chris froome who won his fourth Tour De France this year, as well as the tour de spain. One man who particularly thinks he should get this award is a previous award winner himself, sir chris hoy. I think chris froome, youd be hard pushed to say hes not the greatest of his generation. Four times Tour De France champion, welter champion. His consistency. The way that he deals with everything that is thrown at him,i deals with everything that is thrown at him, i cant think of anybody would rate above him. Hes the best of the best. There are so many variables in the Tour De France, so many things can go wrong. Its an incredibly difficult thing to control. Therefore consistency at that level in that type of event is super impressive. Its a huge achievement what he has managed to do over the last four or five years. To win the vuelta as well as the Tour De France this year, incredible achievement. I think he would probably win Sports Personality in any number of different nations around the world this year. We have just bumped into this gentleman who has probably got by far the most glamorous or revealing outfit of the night. It is speedo mick. Tell everybody what you do. After swimming the channel a few years ago, ive been fundraising, going to football games, walking to france, walking to wembley. Ive just been fundraising basically for three yea rs. Fundraising basically for three years. And youve done a fantastic job. I was at the Liverpool Everton derby on sunday and it was snowing, and he was still there in his speedos how do you get through those cold days . Its a challenge, andi those cold days . Its a big year, commonwealth games, european long course championship, then its the worlds and then the olympics against upright when you stop in the middle of training. When you stop in the middle of training, do you have to stop eating the amount you are eating . Yes. It is 15,000 calories a day, and it goes down to a leaf. The world of athletics to my being represented by mo farah, hes got a good chance. History hasnt been kind to him over the years with this thing, so im not quite sure. He did have an amazing season.
