Whole country owes her a debt for stea dfastness, whole country owes her a debt for steadfastness, taking britain forward to the great brexit deal. Barcelona brought to a standstill as thousands strike and demonstrate as a response to Police Violence. Firefighters joined the crowds in a day of protest. King of spain is going to address the nation shortly. And he was one of the bestselling musicians across four decades. Tom petty hsa died. Spins king is addressing the situation about catalonia. Spains. We are trying to get that to they are responsible and can even put at risk the economy of catalonia and spain. All this means they have attempted to go after the historical institutions of spain and catalonia. Ina clear, institutions of spain and catalonia. In a clear, definitive way, put themselves outside the rule of law and democracy. Tried to break the unity of spain and national sovereignty, the right of all the spanish people to decide democratically life together. In view of this extremely serious situation, this requires commitment from everybody. It is the responsibility of the legitimate powers of the state to make sure legitimate law is abided by. The rule of law and the self of catalonia, based on statutes of autonomy, i want to also today get several messages to the spanish people but particularly the catalu nya people but particularly the catalunya is. People but particularly the catalu nya is. The people but particularly the catalunya is. The citizen of catalonia, i want to repeat that for decades we live in a democracy that offers constitutional roads, so that anybody can defend his ideas, within respect of the law. As we know, with out at respect for the law, no way of living together under democracy, peace and liberty. Not in catalonia, oi peace and liberty. Not in catalonia, or the rest of spain, any other place in the world. In constitutional and democratic spain, we know that we have got a space of agreement of meeting with all fellow citizens. I know that in catalonia, a lot of concern and worry because of the week that the authorities have behaved. Those who feel that way, i ask you to know that you are not alone, you will never be. You have got the support and solidarity of the rest of spain, the guarantee of the rest of spain, the guarantee of the rest of spain, the guarantee of the rule of law, then the defence of the rule of law, then the defence of your or their liberties and rights. And two of the spanish people, i want to give you a message of peace, trust, because these are difficult moments but we will ove ico m e difficult moments but we will overcome them. These are complex times. But we will go forward. We believe in our country and feel proud of who we are, what we are. The democratic principles are solid, strong, and that is because they are based on the desire of millions and millions of spanish people to live in peace, together, jointly and in freedom. This is how we have built the spain of the last few decades. This is how we must continue, with surrender the bot determination. Along this road, in that better spain that we are all wishing for. Catalonia will be included. I will finish my words to all the spanish people, underlining once more the Firm Commitment of the crown with constitution and democracy. And to the agreement of the spanish people, and the commitment from me as king for unity and permanence of spain. Good evening. King felipe sixth of spain making a rare televised address, to the nation following that vote that was taken on sunday in the region of catalonia. Hundreds of thousands of people on the streets, protesting about the Police Violence that took place during that referendum as people or train to get to the ballot boxes. A little bit about what the king was saying, he said it was a serious situation and that the catalunya in leaders have broken laws of the state, and inadmissible lack of loyalty. Putting at risk the economy of spain and catalonia, behaving outside the rules of law and democracy. He said we live in a democracy with constitutional rules. It is possible to express ideas with respect to the law, space to agree and meet all of fellow citizens, he admitted these we re fellow citizens, he admitted these were difficult moments for spain but also that it will be possible to ove ico m e also that it will be possible to overcome them. It is notjust the catalu nya voters who overcome them. It is notjust the catalunya voters who have been out on the streets. Also those who have been weaving spanish flags. Heavy Police Presence there. Some people do not want catalunya to breakaway, not just do not want catalunya to breakaway, notjust in the rest of spain but also catalunya. Notjust in the rest of spain but also catalu nya. The notjust in the rest of spain but also catalunya. The vpte was regarded as a legal on sunday. The Central Government in spain led by the Prime Minister did not recognise the Prime Minister did not recognise the referendum. Of course it is going to be notable to a lot of people that in the address that we just heard, he was critical of catalonia but does not seem to have been any criticism of the Central Government or police. That is no doubt going to have rankled with a number of people. We will be speaking to correspondence in spain later this half hour. Police in las vegas are still no nearer understanding why a gunman killed 59 people and injured over 500. Stephen paddock was a retired accountant, a millionaire who lived quietly with no criminal record. Stephen paddock opened fire on concert course, with an automatic weapon. When he was eventually found, his body was surrounded by an arsenal of guns. But before yesterday he was unknown to police. He was described by neighbours as quiet. Ourfirst report he was described by neighbours as quiet. Our first report tonight. Sirens. Radio we got shots fired. Sounded like an automatic firearm. Sunday night in las vegas, and the first reports of something going terribly wrong. Its coming from upstairs in the mandalay bay. Upstairs, mandalay bay, halfway up. I see the shots coming from mandalay bay. The stress in the voices of the police, evident. They have located where the firing is coming from, and the impact hes having. We have an active shooter. We have an active shooter inside the fairgrounds. We have multiple casualties. Multiple casualties. Stephen paddock is now dead and police are searching the hotel room on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay, which had become his armoury. So what do we know about Stephen Paddock . The 64 year old was a former accountant who had invested in property and was a serious high stakes gambler. But he had no criminal record. He lived in this house in the quiet town of mesquite, 80 miles from las vegas, with his partner, marilou danley. His father was a bank robber, who, while on the run from the authorities, was described by the fbi as a psychopath with suicidal tendencies. The president , on his way to puerto rico, and will be visiting vegas tomorrow, had this to say about paddock. He was a sick man, a demented man. A lot of problems, i guess, and we are looking into him very, very seriously. But we are dealing with a very, very sick individual. But any review of gun law seems a long way down the line, if it will happen at all. Meanwhile, more details are emerging about the massive arsenal that paddock had assembled. Some came from this shop in utah. Average, everyday joe blow. Nothing stood out. It was just normal timing, for him to come in. He was talking about how he was new to the area, visiting all the firearms stores in the area, found something on our shelves that he really liked, and it took him a couple of different trips, you could say, before he ended up purchasing. And paddock came here, too, to buy a rifle and a shotgun. The owner of the shop said the background checks were fine. There were no red flags. An expert on the guns industry last night on television was asked, how much ammunition are you allowed to buy. The answer was simple how much money have you got. Last night, normal people did what normal people do in the face of such tragedy. They came together to commune, to remember those killed and injured. America has been here many times before, and in all likelihood, will be here again. On this, history does repeat itself, regularly. Jon sopel, bbc news, las vegas. The identities of some of the 59 people shot dead by Stephen Paddock have begun to emerge. Among them, an off Duty Police Officer and a teacher. People who were caught up in the attack and who risked their lives to save the injured have been talking. Our correspondent james cook reports now on the victims of the las vegas shooting. Las vegas, a city in pain. Some heros too. This man was dancing with his girlfriend, just moments before the massacre. He commandeered a truck to drive survivors to hospital. I was testing my lot, and the first one that we opened had the keys. Too many people to take to hospital. It was overwhelming. After dropping them off, it was wont to. Sargent said this was like a war zone as dozens and dozens and dozens of patients are right. More than 100. And the battle to save lives is continuing. But only so much that you can do. This man lost his wife. She was very active in the church. I cannot believe that she is gone. My eight year old daughter is at home. I have no idea how i am going to tell her. She loved her so much. It is good to be devastating. Many lives have been saved thanks to the people of the city. Thousands have volunteered to give blood to help. People need to show their support and there is a lot of people injured on the strip, i used to work in a Trauma Centre here and i know the importance of donating blood. Its been surprisingly communal. I think people are bonding together through this in a way that sometimes is very difficult in las vegas. The grief is both personal and extensive, the scale of the suffering inflicted here is difficult to comprehend and even harder to bear. James cook, bbc news, las vegas. We are going to be speaking to correspondence in america later. But we cant return to that address from king felipe of spain. Rare address on television after the referendum for independence that took place in catalonia on sunday. You heard that speech. What do you make of it . Catalonia on sunday. You heard that speech. What do you make of mm was a pretty tough, direct message that the king had. Four other people of catalonia and spain. What could have surprised people, how direct the king was. This is only the second time we have had a royal address like this since the early 18905. Address like this since the early 1890s. He pointed the finger clearly at the catalunya in regional authorities. Those staging the elections on sunday. He said this was illegal. An illegal vote. That this was going to put the spanish Constitutional Order at risk. If you look here. Some of the tens of thousands of people who have been on the streets of barcelona today. Protesting against what they thought was police the talented. The police response, going to polling stations with battons, fired rubber bullets. Protest us have brought barcelona to a standstill. Buses stopped. Public transport, stalls. It was an expression of anger at what the police did. And some support for independence. But people think that they are going to be viewing things differently from the way that the king put it. He said that the Central Government from dread have said this was unconstitutional, it does not have any force in law. Here, they say. It is the actions of the government that have been unconstitutional. That has brought out today. People but the question now, what move the Catalan Government to take . Yet to formally announce the final result of the vote on sunday, and after doing that they could try to choose to formally call for independence for this region. But from what we had from the king, that could trigger a tough response from madrid. That is the balance at the moment. Which way will the Catalan Government go and how will madrid respond . Thank you very much. 0ur correspondent from catalonia. You can hear the crowds. Bringing barcelona to a standstill. Police in las vegas are still searching for a motive as to why a gunman killed 59 people and injured over 500. Two weeks after the hurricane, President Trump has been to see the damage for himself. And king felipe of spain has accused catalan authorities of indefensible actions in the address to the nation. More on the aftermath of the shooting in las vegas. 15 and people killed. Hundreds injured. President trump will travel be sweet. We can speak to our correspondent. We can talk about the investigation. What is the focus at the moment . The focus remains on the motive. Why did this happen . Why did paddock, the gunman, bring 23 firearms to the hotel . Checked in a few days before the music festival. You can see the facade of the building. Two holes on the 32nd floor. It is from that vantage point, the murderous attack was carried out. And the suite he hired, it is a focal point of the investigation as well as recovering the weapons from the room. Investigators also looking at her computer, to see if it has any possible clues. Fbi searching his house, the Retirement Community about 90 minutes from here. And also our property in nevada, eight hours from here. Police have been asking people to be patient and not speculate until they release more information. Expecting to hearfrom the police, in under one hour. Information. Expecting to hearfrom the police, in under one hounm brings it home to people. Exactly what has happened. When you start to see the faces of people who died and have been injured. Band when people start paying tribute. Absolutely. As we saw, james report detailed some of those stories. Stories of couples, the husband shielding his wife, him dying. Mothers dying with children. Fan of Duty Police Officer. The list continues. I was ata officer. The list continues. I was at a vigil yesterday. Candles lit. The deadliest shooting in modern american history. Those 15 people all have god stories and families, all have god stories and families, all of them grieving just now. It is worth pointing out so many stories as well. One woman yesterday for example, as soon as she heard the news, jumped in her car, drove people back and forth from the hospital. So many stories like that. A nurse. He was off duty. Went to hospital. Treating throughout the night. He said he had never seen anything like it. The horrendous nature of the injuries that some people sustained. Surgeons have been telling us. This is not the first time that i have unfortunately covered a mass shooting in america, iam covered a mass shooting in america, i am always struck by the resilience that the community shield. The nurse i mentioned. Working through the night when he told me afterwards that he had actually lost people themselves. Thank you. In todays other news, theresa may has denied there are growing splits in her government over brexit but claims she doesnt want a cabinet of yes men. Shes been speaking to our political editor, laura kuenssberg. Leading is lonely. But theresa may has to walk her party back from the edge. Persuade the tories again, before trying with the rest of us, that we were right about her in charge. I recognise that there are people who feel left behind, parts of our communities feel left behind, and its the governmentsjob to ensure opportunities are there for everyone. When you make that case now come you make it with passion. But when you talk to your colleagues, mps, activists and some ministers at the conference this week, they dont always feel that. They dont always see that. 0ne told me they worry there is a smell of decay around the conference, that the party is somehow finding itself in a downward spiral. One of your colleagues has prepared your leadership to gordon brown. There is a need in this country to make sure the economy works across the whole country, that people can feel benefits across the whole, benefits become a growth, across the whole country. Thats the mission i have set my government, and thats what ministers and the government have been working towards. Its what this conference is about. But on many of those issues, Prime Minister, many of those issues you put forward, a radical look at social care, potentially getting rid of the triple lock on pensions, bringing back more grammar schools. Big changes you want to make, you have had to row back on. You left as a manager trying to stay afloat. No, what we have set out at the conference is a whole set of policies and ideas on how we can actually do things with people that make their lives better. Are you fully behind the Prime Minister . There are here fears of decline. Do you think you are sackable, foreign secretary . Leaving the foreign secretarys size tens to trample on the void. 0ther ministers are frustrated. Do you think the foreign secretary is in danger of stealing the limelight. Was that an eye roll . Party members queueing up to hearfrom him. The Prime Minister visibly, if not verbally, irritated at the attention he grabs. Do you feel, after everything you have been through, you have the authority to do the things you feel the country needs . Yes, and that is what were talking about at conference. Do you really feel that after we have seen this with the foreign secretary upstage you again and again. It doesnt look like you have authority. What would borisjohnson have to do for you to sack him . Strong leadership is notjust about having yes men sat around them. You talk about authority, what matters is what government gets on and does. What matters is not individual personality, its how we can deliver for people. Its how we can make a difference to peoples lives. The last time i checked, the idea of cabinet is you have your disagreements in private. You have ministers privately furious he has been doing this. If some of your colleagues are furious, arent you . You say about the collective voice around the table and i have made the point about having different views. The key issue about europe and brexit, the cabinet came together and we agreed the governments position. I set out the position in the speeches. Straight after the speech he went off and said a whole load of other things. No, if you look at the issues boris is talking about, they reflect the issues we have taken in the florence speech. What would he have to do for you to sack him . Have you thought about it . The problem is, him behaving as he does, for many of your colleagues, its notjust a distraction, it undermines what you are trying to do. It doesnt undermine what im doing at all. He has been, though, one of the few this week to get this conference to crack a smile. His speech was not the vintage roof raising johnson, but with a loyal oath he did cheer them up. Lifting their post election fug. We won. Theresa may won. She won more votes than any party leader, and took this party to its highest share of the vote in any election in the last 25 years. Applause a faint chant, not a roar, for mr johnson. But tomorrow the platform belongs to the Prime Minister. Does power stay within her grasp . Laura kuenssberg, bbc news, manchester. Meanwhile, President Trump has arrived in the us territory of puerto rico to assess damage caused by Hurricane Maria two weeks ago. Joining us, our north american correspondent. What is the president said . He had a tour of some of the devastation that you can still see, 13 days on. He looked from the air. Then apparently meeting some people on the ground. His comments, when he first landed. Not going to go down well with border regions. 95 of this island remains without power. Most without mobile phone communications. More than half of population. Also without running water. Donald trump said that the response from the United States had been great, he praised those on the ground but also joked about how much money the puerto rican s work costing the americans, and compared it to costing the americans, and compared ittoa costing the americans, and compared it to a real disaster with hurricane katrina. It is not about the number dead, of it is the fact that these people feel that despite the fact they are an american territory, help did not come straightaway. 10,000 territory, help did not come straightaway. 10 , 000 note territory, help did not come straightaway. 10,000 note on the ground, the feeling is that they have been treated second class, and if things had been done better link if things had been done better link ifi if things had been done better link if i percent would not be without electricity. The mayor was critical of donald trump. How are they going to bridge that gap . It is really interesting. In the last week, the mayor said that puerto rican were drying. This was not being treated as the lights and a situation that it was. Donald trump responded by criticising the leadership and said locals just wanted everything done for them. Today, after this visit, she has come out with a new statement thanking the president for all that he has done for the island. Very different tune today. The feeling among those from puerto rican who have held that, feel that she has been leant on by the administration. But most of the locals think they have not had the help that they would have expected as other citizens would, for example texas and florida. Instead, left to a great extent to fend for themselves. We have been travelling across the island, many people have not seen any help. Thank you very much. It is time to look at the Weather Forecast. Good evening. Today brought a window of fine weather for most of us but it will not stay that way for the next 24 36 hours because things are clouding over, particularly in the north where outbreaks of rain will fall north where outbreaks of rain will fa ll over north where outbreaks of rain will fall over scotla nd north where outbreaks of rain will fall over scotland overnight and still windy. Richard clare away and leave brightest guys on thursday and a brighter day on friday. Brighter skies. This is bbc news, the headlines at 8 32pm. Police in most figures continue to search for answers as to why government Stephen Paddock massacred 59 people at an open air music concert injuring hundreds more. Two weeks on from Hurricane Maria, president from has toured puerto rico to see the damage and Emergency Response for himself. King felipe of spain accuses catalan authorities of inadmissible disloyalty for organising an illegal referendum on independence in an address to the nation. Theresa may denies borisjohnsons interventions on brexit are weakening her position as the front secretary tells the conservative Party Conference he believes the Prime Minister will make a success of leaving the eu. Lets returned to the shootings in las vegas now. The investigation continues. The authorities remain mystified as to what triggered Stephen Paddock to commit mass murder on such an horrific scale. Joining us is a criminology professor at the university of alabama who specialises in social deviance and criminal behaviour. Thank you forjoining us, professor. Very early days in the investigation, but certain facts are coming to life about Stephen Paddock. What strikes you most about this attack . If we are talking about specific details in terms of this offender i guess i am struck by the fact that his father was a bank robber who was on the fbis most wanted list. That must have a tremendous influence on a child, the father was also a p pa re ntly a child, the father was also apparently psychopathic, diagnosed as psychopathic and had suicidal tendencies. Another element of that is the fact that the father became so famous for committing crimes. And of course we have seen the same thing with the son, who ultimately took his own life and became very famous by killing people. So there is kind of a tragic way this thing kind of repeated itself. So what is different, though, about this particular man in this instance. We understand from his neighbours that he was very quiet, but he had a comfortable life and had been successful . In terms of whats different about this offender as opposed to other mass shooters who i have studied, one thing that stands out is that he is older than most of them. I dont put too much stock into what the neighbours say. Ive seen a tremendous number of cases where the initial reports are that this was just a normal individual and we could never have seen this happen, and then we start to get more evidence in the coming days, which challenges that notion. What are the drivers for men, and it is usually men, admittedly, who act in this way . Suicidal motives is a big part of it. That can interact with this desire for attention. Most people who want fame are willing to do most things but not to do anything for it because they wouldnt want to face the consequences of many crimes. The problem is when you have offenders like this do they want the fame and they are ok with dying, they are attracted to this idea of going out ina attracted to this idea of going out in a blaze of glory. There is also the sense that they feel like victims. We will probably find out that somewhere in this individuals life he felt like a victim, felt like he had been mistreated and that that justified violence like he had been mistreated and that thatjustified violence in his own mind. Its a huge question, but how do you prevent behaviour like this . Welcome of course there is a lot of Different Things that can be done. What i am focused on right now is actually trying to change the way the media approaches covering these offenders, specifically ive been working on an effort, and it has support from more than 140 other experts, which is saying the media should not publish the names or the images of these offenders. Cover Everything Else in as much detail as you want, but if we dont give them the credit they want, the fame they wa nt the credit they want, the fame they want for these attacks that would make a big difference. It would remove their incentive for attacking in the first place, for killing as many as possible, and it would reduce the likelihood that they would inspire future copycats. Adam lankford, thank you for your time. Members of the European Parliament have debated whether britain has made sufficient progress to move on to talk on trade. Favourited no and criticised what they saw as the divisions within the British Government. From strasbourg, adam fleming reports. The eu says it means the uk cant have what it wants, moving on from talks about Brexit Issues to talks about the future relationship, and, they say, britain is to blame. The Prime Ministers speech in florence was conciliatory but speeches are not negotiating positions and as michel barnier, the commissions excellent chief negotiator said last week, work still remains to be done. We have not yet made sufficient progress needed. A few, a very few, think its the other sides fault. Youve treated us as if we are some kind of hostage, that unless we pay a ransom, unless we meet all of your demands, all of your demands, then you wont even have an intelligent conversation with us about trade heading on from here. But in a building where they speak 24 european languages, its striking how many people want to talk about the tories far away in manchester. I hear the speech of theresa may in florence. I read the article from Boris Johnson in the newspapers in great britain. And i dont have a clue what is now the position of great britain. That is my problem. And i think the Prime Minister must create clarity. One option could be to sack the foreign minister, borisjohnson, and the other could be to sit together and find a common wording. The meps who sit in these seats will only have a formal say right at the end of all of this, when thers a final when theres a final deal on the table. This was all about sending a message to eu leaders because it is they who will decide how the process is going when they sit down for a summit in a fortnights time. The British Government said its focus is on the next round of talks, due next week. Here, theyre crossing their fingers for a breakthrough. Adam fleming, bbc news, strasbourg. Parsons green in west london, and a home made bomb marks the sixth terror attack in britain this year. Immediately the Security Services search for Digital Footprints that might lead to those responsible. Theresa may, Prime Minister of the united kingdom. A week later at the united kingdom. A week later at the United Nations the Prime Minister emphasised the role of new media in the fight against terror. We need to go further and faster to reduce the time it takes to remove terrorist content online. While the government pressurises social media giants like facebook and twitter, there are still plenty of places where you can find extremist rhetoric. In old media and in plain sight. You are just not aware of it if you dont understand the language. In waltha mstow, understand the language. In walthamstow, east london, the Early Morning papers arrive at a local newsagent. Among the tabloids and free sheets is this paper, which originates in pakistan, which is printed in urdu. It recently paid tribute to terrorists 0sama bin laden and mullah 0mar, calling them warriors of islam and beacons of light, and even referred to one of the worlds most wanted as a renowned spiritual personality. In addition this freesheet has carried adverts calling for sectarian boycotts. At a Community Centre in waltha mstow boycotts. At a Community Centre in walthamstow there is agreement that these urdu language newspapers are spreading extremism with impunity. There is a danger there. The growth of young people that are prepared to kill other people, the growth of people prepared to go to other countries, particularly young people. I thought the whole idea was that it would safeguard people from the material published that could be damaging. One of the newspapers involved, told us their editorial values are based on faith, peace and unity, and that two members of staff had been sacked after breaches. But there is very little external control. The independent press standards 0rganisation is a volu nta ry standards 0rganisation is a voluntary body and these urdu newspapers do not sit under its code. Neither is the law necessarily being broken. Will this have to remember there needs to be either an intention or a recklessness on the part of the individual to encourage future acts of terrorism. Television channels are also being used to deliver extremist rhetoric in foreign languages. Earlier this year the birmingham based Satellite Channel was fined by 0fcom after a contributor repeated a parable saying that whoever comes across a jew, they should slay him immediately. We asked the department of media and culture to respond to this material and they said the government will work with the appropriate regulators to tackle or remove extremist content and hate speech that breaches regulatory thresholds. Meanwhile, these publications continue to land outside mosques and Community Centres. We can only hope that they dont fall into the wrong hands. Martin bashir, bbc news. Can you smash the Glass Ceiling in a week was an act that is a the bbcs 100 winning season is asking this year. A team of female academics and tech experts have been brought together by the bbc in Silicon Valley to try and find solutions to gender inequality in the workplace. They have until friday before they have to reveal a prototype. Every year, the bbcs 100 women series celebrates the stories of women around the world. This year, we are doing something a little bit different. Over the next month, we are challenging teams of women from across the world to find solutions to some of our biggest problems gender inequality in sport, illiteracy and Sexual Harassment on public transportation. But were starting here the first challenge to tackle in Silicon Valley . The Glass Ceiling. Silicon valley is certainly the front line in the battle for gender equality in the work place. A series of scandals have rocked some of the Big Tech Companies and a recent study showed just one in ten senior positions here are held by women. All of this rings true for sasha and lea, theyre starting their careers in tech here in Silicon Valley and have already experienced routine sexism in some of the smaller firms where they have interned. So this one male engineer said to me, who was kind of pushing back against something i said, he said, i think hr really ruins the company culture, if any of us ever said anything rape y to you, sasha, you could tell us. One of them, i drove all the way up to the city, so two hours to do this in person interview and at the very end of it, they told me they didnt think i was a good fit. But the head of recruiting wanted to give me a hug. 100 women has given this team five days to come up with a prototype to tackle gender inequality in the work place and the board room. Now the parameters are very broad. But, this being Silicon Valley, i expect it to be a tech based solution. It could be an app, it could be Wearable Technology it is up to them. But after this meeting today, they have five days to reveal the outcome of their work. One of the things i hope we identify are the microdynamics. So, a lot of times people, when they approach this issue, want a really big solution. Like the Silver Bullet you mentioned . The Silver Bullet. I believe that its how we are treated every day. The dynamics of whether my ideas are valued in a team meeting, or whether when we talk about who did great work, whether my names included in that list. The gender gap has become such a toxic issue here, it is known as the elephant in the valley. We are going to to see what strides we can make in a week. Youre watching the bbc news, the headlines. Fracking is to be banned in scotland, the controversial practice of using high pressured water underground to extract shale gas was put to a public consultation. The result was overwhelming opposition to it. Environmental groups say the decision will be welcomed around the world. Scotland editor sarah smith reports. The huge petrol Chemical Plant at grangemouth has been hoping for years to process shale gas extracted from under the ground right on their doorstep. Thank you presiding officer. Today the Scottish Government announced it will extend the existing moratorium on fracking indefinitely. Balancing the interests of the environment, our economy, Public Health and Public Opinion, the conclusion of the Scottish Government is that we will not support the development of Unconventional Oil and gas in scotland. Fracking inspires passionate protest and public opposition clearly informed the Scottish Governments decision. Based also, they say, on scientific evidence. Theres shale rock like this throughout Central Scotland, i can pull some of the pieces off in my hand. They contain oil and gas deposits that have ignited this heated debate about whetherfracking could provide Economic Opportunity as well as Energy Security or whether its a danger to Public Health as well as to the environment. Energy companies had hoped to extract shale gas by hydrolically fracturing under ground rock across large parts of Central Scotland a heavily populated area where residents strongly resisted. Campaigners now home westminster will take similar action. Now england is the last place where the government is advocating the technology. It has been met with enormous resistance where ever its proposed in england and this ban, announced today in scotland, will add weight to that fight south of the border. Shale gas is already being imported into scotland, fracked in pennsylvania and shipped across the ocean. The importers, ineos, wanted to extract gas in scotland instead. Its a negative message for scotland beyond our interest in shale. Its a message that says we will not rest in science, we will accept Public Opinion as described as being the basis of the decision. Experts disagree on the safety and Environmental Impact of fracking. Recent Geological Research suggests our shale rock is too old to provide much gas. We are, apparently, 55 million years too late.
