The scores on the doors, calls for restau ra nts a nd cafes the scores on the doors, calls for restaurants and cafes in england to display their food hygiene restaurants and cafes in england to display theirfood hygiene ratings. In sport, Jimmy Anderson makes history. He becomes the first englishman to take 500 test wickets, in the deciding match against the west indies. Louise has the weather. Good morning. It is an autumnal start to the weekend. A day of sunny spells and scattered showers. But some of the showers will be heavy, with some hail and thunder, and rather breezy out to the west. More details coming up. Good morning. First, our main story. Millions of people have been warned to evacuate from florida as Hurricane Irma approaches the United States. The huge storm, which has left a path of destruction across the caribbean, made its way along the coast of cuba last night. Its expected to reach florida tomorrow. Some of the worst affected caribbean islands are now bracing themselves for the arrival of a second hurricane jose is reported to have strengthened with winds of up to iso miles per hour. Our north america correspondent jane obrien reports from miami. Clouds gather over miamis south beach, all but deserted, as irma lurks on the horizon. Millions of people have been asked to evacuate. Irma has already devastated parts of the caribbean. Barbuda is an island in survival mode, and now bracing for hurricane jose. Im just waiting to get evacuated from here, and then im going to come back, and try and salvage something. And help. I dont know. My whole life is here, so. In florida, those images are a stark warning of what may come. Miami is putting up shutters and preparing for the worst. These people on the beach are really the few diehards who, for one reason or another, have decided to stay put and wait out the storm. And even if they wanted to leave, at this point, quite frankly, it is probably too late. Even those who planned ahead found themselves caught, as airports closed, roads backed up, and hotels ran out of rooms. We care about your safety. Youve got to get prepared. If youre in an evacuation zone, you need to get out now, and get either to a friend, a family, a hotel, a shelter. But get where you need to go, and do not wait. This is a storm not seen in a generation, since hurricane andrew laid waste to the state 25 years ago. Irma is bigger, and unpredictable. Different projections show various paths, but all life threatening. On sunday, its full impact will be felt. Jane obrien, bbc news. The Manchester Arena reopens tonight, more than three months after the terrorist attack which killed 22 people. Extra security measures will be in place for the we are manchester benefit concert. Joining us from the arena is our reporter kate sweeting. Kate, theres bound to be mixed feelings about tonights show . Its going to be an important occasion . Yes, it isjust over100 days since a suicide bomber detonated a device among crowds, leaving an Ariana Grande concert here at Manchester Arena. Many of the victims were children who were watching the concert, the youngest only eight years old. And parents collecting children. Tonight is about celebrating manchester and remembering those victims. The bands paint tonight are from the city, Noel Gallagher is playing, as is rick astley. Some of those attending are expected to be some of those at the Ariana Grande concert when the bombing happened, for them it is about replacing horrific memories with something more positive. This is what rick astley said. That venue has had amazing artists from all over the world play there. It needs to keep going. It was absolutely terrible. There are no words for what happened but i do think that positive light has to be shown sometimes for us to get through things. There will be some extra security in place tonight. Backpacks are banned, only small handbags are allowed and there will be a Specialist Mental Health trauma unit to help those struggling this evening but it is about showing that Manchester Arena is very much open for business. Kate, thank you. The United States has called a meeting of the Un Security Council for monday to push for tougher sanctions on north korea. It wants to impose an oil embargo, ban its exports of textiles and subject leader kimjong un to an asset freeze and travel ban. It follows north koreas continued refusal to end its Nuclear Weapons programme. The United Nations is warning of an unprecedented refugee crisis in myanmar. It says more than a quarter of a Million People have fled the country in recent days a dramatic increase on previous estimates. The muslim rohinja minority says that myanmars military has been attacking them and burning villages. The un says 270,000 people have crossed into neighbouring bangladesh, in just a fortnight. The government is being urged to force restaurants, pubs and take aways in england to display food hygiene ratings a score of five means hygiene is very good, and zero requires urgent improvement. The local Government Association wants to see businesses that fail to comply be fined or prosecuted. Jon donnison reports. All food outlets, including restaurants, pubs and takeaways, are given hygiene ratings by local councils. The scores range from zero to five. In wales and Northern Ireland, all food premises are legally required to publicly display those ratings, even if they have received a low score. But the same scores on the doors law, as it is known, does not apply in england, meaning a restaurant that might have been deemed to be filthy doesnt have to let its customers know. Now, the local Government Association says brexit should be used as an opportunity to tighten the laws in england. The lgas calling for england to come in line with wales and Northern Ireland, and scores on the doors, the food hygiene ratings, are published on the premisess door, so that you know when you arrive at a restaurant exactly what is rating is. The lga says the change would encourage food outlets to improve hygiene, and reduce cases of food poisoning. Jon donnison, bbc news. Lets go back to our lead story. Hurricane irmas destructive path through the caribbean has lead to Mass Evacuations from several holiday islands. It is now heading towards florida and we understand that many holiday makers have been urged to leave as quickly as possible. 0ur reporter Adina Campbell is at Gatwick Airport, where travellers are returning from the area affected by the storm. You have been speaking to many of those who have been brought back home . Thats right. In the last couple of hours, at least a dozen flights from the caribbean or florida have arrived here at Gatwick Airport this morning. Thousands of british holiday makers are being told to follow evacuation plans as a result of Hurricane Irma. Many are facing big disruption to travel plans. A short time ago, i spoke to british residents originally from the caribbean, in places like renee danson vincent. They were waiting for theirfamily to danson vincent. They were waiting for their family to arrive at Gatwick Airport earlier. It is very sad. There are a lot of homeless people. Very sad. Im still worried, i have a lot of family there. Hull at the moment, you are not worried about money, just about comfort. But everybody will come together. We will get better, i know we will get better but it is emotional. In terms of travel advice going forward, it is advised that anyone on a package holiday checks with their Tour Operators or airlines to monitor ongoing news reports and to keep in touch with local authorities too. The same advice goes for people who travelled independently and the key advisers to ensure that they keep up to date with ongoing news reports. The Foreign Office has set up reports. The Foreign Office has set upa reports. The Foreign Office has set up a hotline for people affected by the disaster, or any friends and family who would like to keep in touch with what is going on. That number is 0207, 008, 00 00. Some travel companies and operators are beginning to make amendments, their schedules are offering free cancellations and amendments, things like travel waivers. The key advice is to check with your Tour Operator oi is to check with your Tour Operator or your is to check with your Tour Operator oryourairline and is to check with your Tour Operator or your airline and keep up to date with what is going on on twitter, and with the Foreign Office too. Adina thank you. Its been more than three months since 22 people were killed in a terrorist attack at a pop concert in the Manchester Arena. The venue has been closed since then, but tonight will host its first event since the incident. Joining us now is heather and her daughter molly. They were at at the Ariana Grande concert and are going to the we are manchester gig tonight. Good morning. Thank you so much for coming in. Molly, i know being on Live Television is one thing that under these circumstances too, do you want to explain first of all, its a really important day for you . Once we heard the we are Manchester Concert was going on, we thought, i am going. I said to my husband, im going. Iwant am going. I said to my husband, im going. I want to go. It isnt demons but facing your fears. I want to go, plus it is reopening night and it is in manchester. It is extra special for me and i went, we are going when my husband got me the tickets, iwent, yes when my husband got me the tickets, i went, yes and molly, how did you feel, when you heard it was going on, you must have been in two minds, is excited about the concert but also nervous . I wanted to get it over and done with and get new memories on it. And thats it. Lets talk about what happened so the audience understand where you were at the Ariana Grande concert. As the concert finished, we had been to quite a few concepts and you know that you get stuck in people and you go that you get stuck in people and you 9 9 that you get stuck in people and you go go on, lets go. We were out in the foyer day, and we stopped and had a discussion because the majority of people going through the doors, the train station is on the right and most people are going left. She said, mum, everybody is going that way, and i said we need to go to the train station which is where we came in. And she said, no. And i said, the doors are that way. I could see them, that was where we needed to go. We started walking down and literally seconds after that, it was that noise. An undescribable noise. The flash lit the entire wall up and itjust went boom. It wasnt a bang. And this was in the foyer . Yes, if we hadnt had that conversation we would have been much closer. No doubt about it. Bless her. At that time, im like, come on, molly. Stop, we need to go home if we hadnt had that conversation it could have been a lot worse. Im so grateful for that conversation. Obviously, that happened. We didnt go inside, we we re happened. We didnt go inside, we were just in the doorway. And i said, stay here a minute. Lets find out what is going on. I was optimistic it wasjust out what is going on. I was optimistic it was just a speaker or Something Like that. You never expected that. It never entered my mind that that was what it was. People had already started running. Not even minutes, but seconds later this bloke came out of the rubble, with dust all over him. He shouted, he was running, bomb, run and that was it, we had to go. We headed to the doors on the left, and then obviously, you have the steps as you are going out and i was very aware, i was behind her all the time, she was crying. I said, i am right here. We got out the doors. I tried to keep as many people behind me so that we did not fall down the steps. By that we did not fall down the steps. By this time, it was building up and you could feel it. We got out. And i was you could feel it. We got out. And iwas like, you could feel it. We got out. And i was like, we survived. You didnt really know or understand what was going on. Some of the people outside, they had seen what was happening. These women and nuns asked us what had happened. That is quite hard. And mums. They asked, andl quite hard. And mums. They asked, and i said a bomb had gone off inside. This ladys face, i will never forget the look on her face. She frantically phoned her daughter, im assuming, because we just told her. Imagine someone telling you a bomb has gone off and your child is inside. When you describe that, it is so difficult for people who have gone through those things to process what has happened. Months have gone by. Rick astley was here with us yesterday morning. Talking about how much he is looking forward to the concert because, for him, he said it is so difficult to put yourself in the position of those, like you and molly who have been through those things. But also the performers. They want to make a point that the concerts will continue and people will still be going and enjoy themselves and see the bands and people they like performing. That is really important, isnt it . , yes, you appreciate life after that. Even in the days following. And the news following. You realise just how bad it was. I was a bit stubborn, i thought, its not going to stop me from living my life. Who are you looking forward to seeing at the concert tonight . Umm, i dont know. There is Noel Gallagher. The courteeners. Rick astley. Do you know any of his music . There is going to be a great atmosphere tonight. Hopefully you will enjoy going to concerts again. Yeah. We wish you well this evening. Thank you for coming in and sharing your moment with us this morning. Thank you. We need to keep you updated with what is happening with Hurricane Irma. And of course, hurricanejose following close behind. Louise has the latest. Good morning everybody. This is the satellite picture through the night where Hurricane Irma made landfall through the north cuban coast, the first time a category five hurricane has made landfall since 1925. Here isjose, has made landfall since 1925. Here is jose, not as strong has made landfall since 1925. Here isjose, not as strong a storm or as powerful but it could still produce a glancing blow towards the island of barbuda before continuing to move it in of barbuda before continuing to move itina of barbuda before continuing to move it in a north westerly direction and into more open waters and it will weaken. But we need to keep a close eye on Hurricane Irma. She will continue to drift through the day across the northern coast and push ina across the northern coast and push in a north westerly direction towards florida. There is a level of uncertainty about the direction it is going to take and we will keep you updated through the day. But closer to home, things are pretty u nsettled closer to home, things are pretty unsettled here. There is an area of low pressure meaning it will be a breezy start on west facing coasts and it will be a sharry scenario as we go through the weekend. Overnight, this little fellow arrives for sunday. Over the next few hours, showers will be more widespread, some sunshine through eastern and western areas, a scattering of showers fairly light at the moment, and it will begin to gather intensity as we get through the day, a couple sharper ones through the Lake District into wales, and on west facing coasts of devon and Cornwall Police stop heading further east, sunshine for the early hours this morning. Not a bad start here. The wind is not a strong but unfortunately, it could cause some issues, as it pushes further inland some of those could be slow moving. A disappointing afternoon if you are caught in the showers but if you dodge them, keep the sunshine and 18 degrees could feel pleasant but i expect when those showers arrived it wont feel very pleasant at all. Overnight, those showers will ease off and we will see clearer skies. Temperatures falling away, in rural parts, single figures and a touch of mist and fog first thing. Cloud and rain continues to move into the north west. Wet and windy weather. This weather front weakens as we continue through england and wales. Look at the rain following behind. Rain or showers, it will be a miserable afternoon across much of scotla nd miserable afternoon across much of scotland and Northern Ireland. Here, 15 degrees, widely across the area. Further south and east, staying dry for the longest. 19 degrees isnt out of the question with patches of rain in the london area towards the end of the day. I will be back with more details in 30 minutes. Studio thanks, louise. Perhaps not whether to go down the beach front. Down the beachfront. It down the beachfront. It depends on what you are wearing. The reason why we are talking about the beaches. Some of them are beautiful pieces of elegant victorian architecture others have perhaps seen better days, but they all serve a valuable purpose, protecting us from the often rather variable weather at britains coastal resorts. One photographer has become so fond of the seaside shelter that he has just travelled the country cataloguing them trying to capture the beauty of these fading and often overlooked havens. David sillito reports. la mer by Charles Trenet . The glory of the english summer, that is what we are celebrating. What english summer . Look at it they are little temples. To disappointment. Lets be honest they were not built to protect us from summer sunshine, were they . They are there to remind us that on our days out, we might need some protection. A lot of them are quite sad. But photographer will scott is very fond of the British Seaside shelter. The appeal is the structures, which are common around coastal towns in the uk, but specifically in england, a kind of relics of former glories of these towns. No one had documented them before as far as i can see, so i sort of started travelling the country, to shoot them. Its a bit scruffy, isnt it . Most of them are a bit scruffy. They are. But i think there is still a kind of beauty in them. And its notjust the beauty, theres history. This one here in margate was, its said, a place of poetic inspiration ts eliots the waste land. On margate sands, i can connect nothing with nothing. The broken fingernails of dirty hands. This is where he sat looking out at the wasteland, and. Its not just about what they look like, its what they symbolise. The seagulls are struggling a bit at the moment, the wind is blowing, there is lots of cloud, and. A few drops of rain. Just a few. These little municipal gazebos are a celebration of a very british approach to the british weather. The wind blowing in your face makes you feel alive. Just let it blow through your hair braving the weather. It is not raining, if it were raining, we would still be stood here. With our kagools with our coats on. So forget sitting in a warm car to watch the rain, surely this is a more beautiful, open air way to appreciate the majesty of the British Seaside. la mer by Charles Trenet . Even in the rain, it looks all right. A lovely, romantic stroll along the beach. You cannot beat that. Youre watching breakfast, its time now for a look at the newspapers. Writer and broadcaster Simon Fanshawe is here to tell us whats caught his eye. Does that make you feel like going to the seaside . I live in brighton, im at the seaside. We live right on the seafront, life is a conversation with the weather. It is kind of nice. I love looking out to see even if it is bonkers it is dramatic. I quite like to sit on the beach when it is raining. I dont like it. When you are on your own . Wing just sitting there, getting dry. Where are you going to start us off . This is the front page of the financial times, a lot of people were talking about this exclusive, its an interesting story because. It looks like the conservatives are about to do a land grab on labour political territory. The rumour here that they are floating, and it may just be a rumour, is that the tories will announce a reform on tuition fees. In the last election you will remember that labour sort of promised that they would abolish tuition fees, and they rolled back oii tuition fees, and they rolled back on it and said that they would do something about it. It was an issue that captured the young vote and the significance is the only group where the conservatives had the lead over labour was people over the age of 47. The tories are desperate to regain the youth vote. Tuition fees, i was chairman of the university when they came in. And when they did it was a very sensible system. It was ramped up from 3000 to 9000 and the real thing that is the problem is the Interest Rate rose. Instead of keeping it low, it rose. Its nearly 6 now. You wrap up against agricola about £5,000 in debt. You dont pay it off until you are on twitter £1000 but it is a lot on your mind. But the tories this firstly defended the scheme 20 £1000. They said you do not have to pay it back until. They have done it for so long. Isnt it embarrassing and very obvious . It for so long. Isnt it embarrassing and very obvious7m depends if you read back on the principle of fees or the structure of the scheme. The principal, most people think it is fair in that there is a contribution by the state and the individual. They both benefit, it is sharing and goes directly to universities and advanced teaching. By and large it isa advanced teaching. By and large it is a good way of funding universities. The problem is grants, where kids get a huge amount of Living Expenses and credit cards say, dont pay us back until you get a certain amount of money. So they increase the grants, and peck the rate of interest, for each instance. They can raise repayments. There is a bonkers scheme in treasury terms because only 48 pay it back. In the news earlier, vice chancellor s pay is going to be looked at. Its another effort to ensure that stu d e nts another effort to ensure that students and potential voters know that money is being spent wisely. When i was the chair, we were pretty much near the kind of limit that is now being suggested. And in the times newspaper. . Now being suggested. And in the times newspaper. . Edward now being suggested. And in the times newspaper. . Edward lucas, he wrote this story, a journalist for the Economist Newspaper normally, youd think, this is good and reliable stuff, you know . Russia is about to launch this exercise which they have done before. It is really about the russian threat. What is interesting about this piece is that in the way that belgium and that bit of europe is the crucible of disagreement for the first and second world wars, now it is the baltics where the fight is on. Strategically they are very important and some of them do not have a border on border controls with russia. What president putin is doing is muscling up on the Baltic States and it is a classic putin tactic, it is like being baited in the playground. You need to make a decision about whether to respond or not. Now, if it responds, what actually happens there . What is de escalation . He is doing that thing that putin does, he has done it in america too with elections. He has sown descent, instability and indecision. We had to rack up the defence budget. Its a really good explanation in some detail. The thing about the russians, they do not have so much money to spend on defence. They are bound to the system. It is scary how he plays at the whole time. We talk about women being allowed in traditional male institutions. He flipped it on its head with this story . |j institutions. He flipped it on its head with this story . I love this picture. I love how it looks like there is a lovely conversation going oii there is a lovely conversation going on all around. It is like mary poppins. You can see the letter and oii poppins. You can see the letter and on his tie, he is one of four boys being recruited. He looks like a young mr bean too. And a little bit. You have to admire his profession . I met the first. Here we re profession . I met the first. Here were the people who helped deliver babies . Midwifes . Yes, iforget he was the first male one in essex, he was the first male one in essex, he was fantastic. I admire this kid. This is a debate, shall we say, in my house. About whether or not to let the cat in the bedroom at night. And whether or not they are peaceful. I find it and whether or not they are peaceful. Ifind it very and whether or not they are peaceful. I find it very peaceful. My peaceful. I find it very peaceful. My other half finds it very annoying stop having cats, they are the very devil. Dont be silly lets move on. This is a dog story. There is a team of scientists at the mayo clinic in minnesota who studied this and the question is, having a pet, does it disturb your sleep or help you sleep . They reached the staggering conclusion that having a pet in the brim helps you to sleep. I knew it, i was right having a pet in the bed does not help you sleep. Im one of those Old Fashioned boys. When i was a kid, we had dogs in the morning, they came into the room and let your face and that is how you woke up. Its one thing having a pet dog, in the bedroom, but. Not in your bed. Three in a bed. It is very disruptive but it seems to me that how does one need to know that a dog getting up in the night chasing its tailand finding a getting up in the night chasing its tail and finding a new place to be comfortable. Its a good job we have the team in minnesota looking into it they are using their time well. I wonder if they have dogs around the lab . It would have been a fun research project. We will speak to you again in an hour. The headlines coming up in a moment. Hello, this is breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Coming up before 9am, well get the latest sport. But first a summary of this mornings main news. Hurricane irma is lashing cuba with strong winds and heavy rain after devastating several caribbean islands. The authorities in the us state of florida have told five and a half Million People thats a quarter of the states population to leave their homes. Those are the main stories this morning. Mike is here with the sport. James anderson is 35, but according to graeme swann he has the body of a 21 year old. Apparently he is a fan of planking. A way of relaxing in which you sort of squat like an owl and apparently he has done it on the side of pitches before to relax, to relieve tension. This was on a genuine website. They omit the noise ofan genuine website. They omit the noise of an owl to relieve the tension. I have just been of an owl to relieve the tension. I havejust been doing of an owl to relieve the tension. I have just been doing it downstairs and it helps. Have you been feeling tense this morning, have you . You do that for a minute and it is a good exercise. Is it possible that someone exercise. Is it possible that someone made that up entirely . checkedit someone made that up entirely . checked it with several sources. Really . Unless it is a great big busheu really . Unless it is a great big bushell wind up really . Unless it is a great big bushell windup pictures of people owling back to the cricket. James anderson says he felt, emotional and relieved, after becoming the first englishman to take 500 test match wickets. He achieved the feat in west indies second innings, in the deciding test at lords. Now, before anderson took centre stage, ben stokes pushed england into a first innings lead of 71. While anderson reached the milestone with the wicket of kraigg brathwaite, early into the windies reply. Hes only the third seam bowler in history to go past 500. He didnt stop there either, helping reduce the windies to 93 3 at stumps on day two. Theyll resume this morning leading byjust 22 runs. Milestones are nice, but thats not what drives me to become as good as i can be. I want to try and help england win games of cricket. Thats my motivation, thats what i try and thats why i turn up every day trying to improve myself, and thats what will keep driving me on. Im loving playing at the moment. I think im bowling well, i feel fit and strong, and im enjoying playing in this team, so hopefully that can continue for a while yet. Lets put his achievements into context. Lets put his achievements into co ntext. H e lets put his achievements into context. Hejoins a lets put his achievements into context. He joins a select bunch of international bowlers who have reached the magical 500 test wickets. At the end of yesterdays playjimmy reached 501 for england. Some way to go to pass this man. He is only 35. Australias Glenn Mcgrath is the leading fast bowler. He is on 563. So another target in andersons sights. Shane warne with his spin is second on the leaderboard with 708 wickets. Jimmy, evenif leaderboard with 708 wickets. Jimmy, even if he plays until 40 would do well to get near the sri lankan magician. He was a spinner. He was 38 when he attired, but could anderson get near that tally . Rafa nadal is through to the us open final, after beating huan martin del potro in their semi final overnight, at flushing meadows. Nadal lost the first set to his argentinean opponent before taking command and at one stage won nine games in a row, eventually winning in four sets. The spaniard will aim for a third us open and 16th grand slam title in sundays final. I played well. I am playing well almost the whole season. So today was the day to play well. It the real thing. Its the real thing. I was playing so so at the beginning of the tournament and i have been playing better and better every day. And today was the day to play the best match of the tournament. Nadal will meet south Africas Kevin Anderson in the final who reaches this stage of a grand slam for the very first time. He beat spains Pablo Carreno busta in four sets at flushing meadows. Some good news for british tennis. Jamie murray and Switzerlands Martina Hingis reached the final of the mixed doubles after a straight sets semi final victory. Now, its one of the steepest climbs in spain, and the angliru, is all that stands between chris froome and a place in the history books. Froome, hiding in the middle here, is hoping to become the first man in 39 years to win the vuelta a espana and Tour De France in the same year and with a lead of over 90 seconds, barring any mishaps today, it will be a victory parade into madrid tomorrow. The premier League Returns this afternoon with seven matches. Leaders Manchester United are in the late kick off when they travel to stoke. The big game of the day though is this lunchtime when Manchester City host liverpool whove left out brazilian forward philippe coutinho, who was hoping to go to barcelona in the transfer window. He could have played 15 minutes or 20 minutes. He agreed. We had a good conversation. Celtic will face the daunting prospect, of Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League this week, and they warmed up nicely for that match with a comfortable victory. The scottish champions beat hamilton 4 1 last night with psg loanee, edouard, wrapping up a comfortable win with an impressive effort. They go top, for the time being although aberdeen can overtake them with a win at hearts this afternoon dan walker is at brighton. Brighton newly promoted. They are looking for the first goal of the league campaign. It would be their first goal in the top Division Since 1983. Lets hope dan can inspire them, but west brom will have other ideas. In the championship, derby have jumped up to fourth after thrashing hull city 5 0. In rugby league, the title contenders are flexing their muscles, ahead of the play offs, as castleford extended their lead at the top of super league with a 38 24 victory over second placed leeds. Meanwhile wigan have boosted their play off hopes, with a late victory against hull fc. Hull had overturned a 14 point lead to be in front going into the final moments, but late tries from Anthony Gelling and john bateman gave the warriors a 30 22 victory. Newcastle made it two wins from two in rugby unions premiership with a dramatic late win over sale after beating worcester on the opening weekend. A penalty try awarded just six minutes from time helped the falcons to a narrow 13 12 win. Dan walker is not only in brighton on holiday, he is doing football focus. Its a sport more commonly associated with middle age and a slower pace of life, not with young people drinking and socialising. But the festibowl event in london is hoping to change the perception of bowls. And as i discovered, theres another way of spicing up the action. It was off with the shoes and socks. They may not know their burned ends from theirjack they may not know their burned ends from their jack highs they may not know their burned ends from theirjack highs yet, but a new generation are learning the bowling lingo, tempted on to the green by music and drinks. Due to a new initiative the Public Perception of this emblematic british game maybe about to change. But first, it is off with the shoes its not going to make any difference to my technique i dont think. The barefoot bowling movement with social sessions on greens have won over many newcomers in australia and the sport is hoping it will have the same effect here now. Its really good fun. It makes it feel summery and really lovely. With the shoes off . Grasping your toes and that. At the beach, but in london. Its really nice especially when the grass is nicely cut. Does it improve your bowling . I have no idea. Thats the first time ive played it. It was boring before, but i enjoyed it. I would consider doing it. It feels free and you almost feel youre on holiday. With the British Isles junior championships taking place in wales this weekend the sport is keen to promote its youthful appeal while at elite International Level all the players are under 40, the majority who take up the sport at grass roots level a re who take up the sport at grass roots level are much older. It lends itself to anybody, from any background, any community, it is a fun, sociable sport and thats what were trying with festibowl to see the lighter more fun side of the sport in a really informal setting. The bowl does bend. It has a bias which is on the small side and it will bend in towards the bias. You should roll up the trousers scham the rules havent changed. Thats better. Oh. The rules havent changed. Thats better. 0h. But playing without shoes is a far cry from the traditional game as the attire in this film shows. The sport has been played here since the 13th century, made famous by sir francis drake. On plymouth hoe seamen still match their skill. He finished a game as their skill. He finished a game as the spanish armada sailed up the english channel. What those at the cutting edge may not realise is this sport was banned by several kings in the middle ages for being too much ofa the middle ages for being too much of a distraction, well, it is an emotional roller coaster. Of a distraction, well, it is an emotional rollercoaster. Clubs around the uk are unsure about this, but in my mind its about the safeguarding the future of the sport. The average age is about 28 to 30. And this is what we want to do. We want to get more people bowling. For a younger demographic and we want to spread the bowling love the love certainly flows when you deliver that first winner, perhaps having my toes made me feel more relaxed or i was learning from the best how to knock on wood. When i got close to the jack it felt like scoring a goal. And we will hear more about the owling business. Jimmy anderson is not alone. It is the new form of planking. If no one backs up my claim i may not be here at 9. 30am. Do you want to walk out with a demonstration of the owling. I need to get the heels down. The heels need to be down, i think. But thats the way you can relax. You can thats the way you can relax. You ca n stretch thats the way you can relax. You can stretch your glutes. The noise is optional. We will leave mike doing that for the next half an hour while we carry on with the programme. No noises, please, mike, were getting obon with the programme. Half of people who bought new build Retirement Properties over a ten year period have lost money when they resell, according to Research Carried out for money box. On average the losses are about a fifth of the purchase price. According to Land Registry, average house prices are up more than 20 between 2007 and 2016. For flats, the average increase is more than 30 . But in the retirement housing sector, its been a different story. More than half of all new build Retirement Properties, sold between 2000 and 2010, were later sold at a loss. Paul lewis from radio 4s money Box Programme is in our london studio. Paul, you have been doing a bit of research on these numbers. Whats the picture thats merging . M research on these numbers. Whats the picture thats merging . It was Elderly Accommodation Council that did the research for money box using Land Registry figures and i think the facts that youve given. They are shocking. In half the developments where people resold homes they lost money. We went to one particular development in bridlington on the North Yorkshire coast and there people told us some very sad tales. One flat bought new for £166,000 resold three years ago for £166,000 resold three years ago forjust £70,000 and those kind of losses, more than half the value in that case were fairly typical. Residents were angry. Ken paid £180,000 and thinks it is probably worth £70,000 and he said it was criminal. It was like taking money from his children. So there is a lot of anger from his children. So there is a lot ofanger in from his children. So there is a lot of anger in places where the figures really are quite, at the high end of the losses. Paul, obviously, if you are awe one of those who bought them new and you face the losses, thats a significant loss of money, you would be angry. But for those people who are buying them, you know, as in used property, i mean that presumably means used property, i mean that presumably mea ns they re used property, i mean that presumably means theyre getting a bargain. Thats the flip side to this, isnt it . Well, if you buy them, but people find them hard to sell and thats why the price has come down so low. So yes, people can get a bargain. Come down so low. So yes, people can geta bargain. Some come down so low. So yes, people can get a bargain. Some people buy them and then rent them out. There could be strict covenants about this, but when you have paid a low price you are still paying Service Charges and when you sell, you might have to pay an exit charge and all those things do put people off and i think if people do want a retirement home they want a nice brand new, you know, shiny one and theyre happy to pay the money, they are often downsizing and they have got money ina downsizing and they have got money in a house that they can realise and they are downsizing and they are sold in a very slick manner and people dont realise that it could be that when they do die or perhaps go intoa be that when they do die or perhaps go into a care home the property will actually be worth on the open market a lot less than they have paid and market a lot less than they have paid and i think there is a case for developers telling people about those things. Mccarthy and stone, bun of the Big Developers tells us they are doing more to help resales. It put in special teams to help people sell. And it has taken away some of the restrictions that people find difficult. So things maybe getting a bit better and the Elderly Accommodation Council confirms that, but there are still people in these places that they paid a lot of money for that can really expect to get relatively little in the future. Paul, there will be people who are still wanting to buy new places. So what advice do you give . Well, there are, of course, this is quite a big business these retirement homes. There arent enough of them. Everyone agrees that. People like the idea that they live somewhere thats been specially designed, its easy to get around. Everything is new and modern and there is someone on site to help if they need any help at any point so they like the idea. They often sell a house that they have got or a flat that they have got and they have got the cash to do it and make profit on that, but they should look at the terms and conditions carefully and ask what the resail price is likely to be. Make sure there are no clauses about paying a big percentage of the value if they sell and some of them can pay up to 30 of what we get when they are resold. They need to look at the annual Service Charges and dont be seduced by a nice, convenient home, make sure you know the full deal before you part with your cash. Paul, thank you very much. Good advice. More from paul and money box at midday today. Heres louise with a look at this mornings weather. Yes, this is whats been happening through the night in terms of the satellite picture where irma made land fall across the north cuban coast during the early hours. A category 5 hurricane. The last time there was a category 5 hurricane in cubait there was a category 5 hurricane in cuba it was way back in 1925. This isjose. It may produce a glancing blow to the island of barbuda which is not great news after what happened here, but it is expected to wea ken happened here, but it is expected to weaken a little as it pushes off into a north westerly direction. Its irma thats the real cause for concern as we move across cuba during the course of the day today of the its then expected to move towards the flower ka keys around about sunday lunch time our time and then move up through the south west of florida. Still some uncertainty about the track that it is going to ta ke about the track that it is going to take and we will, of course, keep you up to dated once she starts to push further north and west. Back at home, we have a scattering of showers around. The wind is coming in from showers around. The wind is coming infrom a showers around. The wind is coming in from a north westerly direction. Never a particularly warm source. So on those exposed coasts it wont feel great out there and you can see where the showers are sitting. One or two through Northern Ireland and western scotland. The bulk across england and wales. As we go through into the afternoon, it looks as though we will continue to see a combination of sunny spells and scattered showers. By 9am we have got the showers down into north west england and into parts of wales and they will continue to be a nuisance. Now whats going to happen is the fresh north westerly breeze will drift the showers further inland so if you have got dry and sunny weather at the moment, it is a good omen, but it is not set to last. As we go through the day the showers will continue to drift their way south and east. With lighter winds across south east england, some could be slow moving. Brisk showers piling in along west facing coasts. Maybe a lull in proceedings in scotla nd maybe a lull in proceedings in scotland and Northern Ireland by the end of the day. If you manage to keep the sunshine and dodge the showers then 17, 18 celsius, but i suspect in the showers were looking at top temperatures of 14 or 15 celsius for some places. Through this evening, the winds will start to fall light and temperatures will fall away. We will have a little bit of patchy mist and fog in places. In rural spots down to single figures, but the cloud and rain already starting to show its hand again as we move into sunday. Another area of low pressure and that is really going to push its way into scotland, Northern Ireland. The frontal system will weaken as it moves its way through england and wales, butjust look at the showers. The volume of showers piling in behind. So it stays windy. It stays pretty disappointing in terms of the feel of things, 12 to 16 celsius. Highest values of 19 celsius. It might stay dry during daylight showers, daylight hours. But then there will be patchy rain arriving. For many, Greenham Common is a name that evokes memories of the cold war, Nuclear Weapons and the protest movement it gave rise to. Its 20 years since the former airbase in berkshire was passed into public hands and this weekend the local community are taking part in an arts event telling the history of the base. Our reporter laura trant is there this morning. Laura, i see a little bit of sunshine there. Just talk us through what we can see. We see the tents and the fence to your left. Quite a lot of people around . Yes, thats right. Welcome to Greenham Common which is gearing up for a big Theatrical Event tonight. Its 100 Theatrical Event tonight. Its100 yea rs of Theatrical Event tonight. Its100 years of war and peace and it is bringing the history of the former air base to life. This part of the set. Because each part of the set celebrates different decades of greenhams history. This part is looking at the 1980s, the womens movement. You can see a number of tents, replicas of what it would have been like for the women who we re have been like for the women who were camping out and protesting about Nuclear Missiles being kept on this base. Here is a replica fencing. Behind that, is where the Nuclear Missiles were stored and of course, there were bunkers as well which were used at the time. Now they remain empty, but they still serve as a reminder of the cold war. Joe campbell has been taking a look around and has this report. When you hear the air attack warning you and your family must take cover. Crews arrived at greenham in one of the tensest periods of the cold war. While moscow and Washington Squared up on the world stage, conflict came to berkshire as Anti Nuclear Campaigners picketed the base while inside the military trained for armageddon. This is the decontamination unit of what was raf Greenham Common. So through the Revolving Doors here and then you come up against this. This. Which as you can see is a very heavy blast proof door. It weighs more than a tonne. In this complex airmen would have cleaned up after exposure to fall out or chemical attack. John was the sites last civilian manager. Now, this looks quite important. This is where the whole suite was controlled from. We can make it do anything. It is supposed to lock all the doors. And all these years after the place closed, everything is still working. You press the button here and you can still talk. Yes. Whats this here . I mean, these are american cigarettes . Yes. These were probably being smoked by the last man who actually stood here and used this for real. Yes. I suppose really when you Wander Around here it is a kind of window on the end of the world. Yes, thats a good phrase. Yes, it is a window on the end of the world. I think there is no other way of looking at it. If the guys came back in here and had to stay in here, what is there outside left . Military and peace campaigners would both in the end lay claim to bringing about the end of the cold war in greenhams demise. The day the americans finally left Greenham Common, i was here to watch them go, but it didnt really sink in just what was happening until a few years later when on a trip to the us militarys bone yard in the arizona desert where they store redundant aircraft, i came across a small area where there were a group of vehicles parked in congress in that desert setting in their green and black and brown camouflage. It was the Greenham Common crews missile launchers awaiting their fate with the rest of the cold war relics. The bunkers though remain. A reminder of what might have happened had the missiles ever rolled out of here in anger. Well, that was joe campbell with that report. Im joined by chris from the greenham trust. This is a pretty big event for you, isnt it . It is an amazing event. It is our 20th anniversary and giving £40 million over that period of time as well. So we really wanted to create an event which is by the people for the people. We have a choir of over 100 people. It isjust amazing. Tell us what is happening tonight . There isa us what is happening tonight . There is a show. It was last night as well. It starts at 6. 30pm. People can Wander Around and there is the peace camp and the american re enactors. You Wander Around from 6. 30pm and the main show ramps up at 8. 15pm and starts formally at 8. 30pm and runs to 9. 30pm and tells the story of peggy and you will hear more that from peggy. Chris, thank you very much indeed. Talking about peggy, let me introduce you to a lady who is an actress, the lead actress in 100 years of war and peace. Tell us why you took the role . Why you wanted to be involved . Well, ive spent quite a lot of time in theatres and ive always loved theatre that breaks out of that frame and working with musicians, with dancers, with working across the scope. And tonight youre playing somebody called peggy. Tell usa playing somebody called peggy. Tell us a bit about her and why she is significant . Peggy, its through peggy significant . Peggy, its through peggy that beth tells the story of the common. She was one of the children who lived on the heath and it is through her life story that we get the story of the common and that in itself is very exciting. So we see peggy through her lifetime, dont we . Let me introduce you to the writer of the play to beth fli ntoff. The writer of the play to beth flintoff. Where did your idea come from, beth . Well, iwanted flintoff. Where did your idea come from, beth . Well, i wanted to tell the story through the eyes of one person because i think sometimes you can tell this story and it is about thousands of people, but it doesnt quite land in an audience. Sol thought im going to focus on one person and i was having a cup of tea with my grandmother who lives locally, sadly she is no longer with us, but she was 101. She remembered going to dancing and i decided im going to dancing and i decided im going to dancing and i decided im going to call the character after my grandmother and the story took shape after that. Why do you think it is important we commemorate this thing . This place is stunningingly beautiful and it was almost a war zone and now we have it, anyone can come and walk their dog and go for a run. It is a miracle and im proud to be part of the celebration of that. Well, 100 years of war and peaceis that. Well, 100 years of war and peace is on here tonight at 6. 30pm and its a free event. From Greenham Common back to you. Thank you very much. We will have another look around a little bit later on. Thank you for the moment. We are asking if you Pay Attention to the scores on the doors . We are going to hear why there are calls to make all food outlets display their food ratings in england. Hello, this is breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Hurricane irma heads for florida after causing devastation across the caribbean.
