The U.S. is telling the Cuban people not to try to make it to America by boat.WESH 2's Gail Paschall-Brown spoke to one man with connections to the country, who says staying put and protesting may prove to be just as dangerous.Related: Floridians with strong ties to Cuba are calling this protest the most important in decadesHomeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayokras says Cubans protesting against their government should not attempt to reach the United States by boat. "They put their lives in tremendous peril. Just in the last few weeks we have seen approximately 20 people lose their lives by taking to the sea," Mayokras said.Dr. Orlando Gutierrez Boronat, who was born in Cuba, is the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance coordinator."We ask our people not to fall into the trap of a mass exodus, manipulated and controlled by the communist regime," Boronat said. His organization is a coalition of pro-democracy groups inside and outside of Cuba dedicated to the liberation of the island."I think the Cuban people are suffering terribly, there is very bloody repression on a massive scale taking place in Cuba today," he said.He says he's seen videos, which he provided to WESH 2 News, of Cuban special forces, firing into crowds in Havana. "We know from our people in the island that they're going house to house and arresting, beating and killing," Boronat said.He adds these busloads of paramilitary forces armed with sticks and axes arrived Monday in the city headed toward a youth protest."If they have a well-founded fear of persecution or torture, they are resettled in a third country. They are not resettled in the United States," he said.Boronat says mass exoduses have been used by the Cuban government before, ending in a huge loss of lives."Cuba's future is on the line now. This is the moment. Please help us," he said.Gutierrez-Boronat is an award-winning author, community leader and spokesperson for the Cuban Democratic Directorate, which is a nongovernmental organization that supports the human rights movement in Cuba.
