Leadership matters. And having a leader who guides the community in the true teachings of islam is extremely important. But the other part of it is we have to really look at what is creating these islamic fanatics. Many of these islamic fanatics happen because of political motives, and the actions they carry out has nothing to do with the actual teachings of islam. Theyre just using that as a venue or conduit of their political agenda. At the end of youre piece you have a message of encouragement for fellow american muslims. [ chanting no justice no peace ] its been one year since eric garner died in Police Custody. The impact it has had on policing. Take a look at these pictures right now and were keeping an eye on them for you. Pretty dramatic stuff happening in Southern California. It is a wildfire burning in san bernardino. In the immediate area just outside of the mojave desert. It is just beyond bone dry in the area. The fire jumped across the free and hit some of the vehicles. Are these drone pictures . So it is the third time this week that crews have been grounded because of drones. Well keep an eye on those pictures for pup it has been five days since the death of a black woman in a texas jail and controversy surrounding the incident continues to grow. [ protesting no justice no peace ] the woman died monday three days after being arrested during a traffic stop in southeast texas. Police have labeled her death a suicide but apparent her family does not believe it. Theyve launched the official investigation. John henry smith has more. Local police say that the woman killed herself while in Police Custody and the medical examiner agrees it was suicide but the family said that the account does not jive with the woman they knew. She had just moved from chicago to text to start work at her alma mater prairie view june. Friday a state trooper stopped jackson from making an improper lane change. They say she kicked an officer leading to her arrest. At one point police addressed the eyewitness filming the arrest. She spent the weekend at the county jail wand was found unresponsive monday. The medical examiner said that she killed herself. The Sheriff Department speculates she did it with trash bags. I pronounced her dead. I did see a dark mark somewhere on the neck. Loved one question that account. Wondering why someone who had just moved to the community for a fresh start would commit suicide . Outgoing, truly filled with life and joy. And so when you think through the circumstances that has been shared with us to this point it is unimaginable. But investigators in text say that they see no evidence of foul play. We have reviewed the video and at no point in the video does it appear that anyone goes into that cell and harms in any way. The County District attorney points to this video that she made in march as evidence that she night have been suiciding. Im suffering from something that maybe you all are dealing with right now. Its a little bit of depression as well as ptsd. I know a lot of people especially the family are wondering why would she do this if she allegedly or if she did this to herself. That is, of course, extremely relevant, that she may have been suffering from some sort of mental illness. Her family in chicago say they want to meet with investigators in texas. Were not going to demonize that community. What we are wanting to do, though is understand what happened. It should be noted that the county sheriff glen smith was fired in 2008 from his job as police chief in texas amyths allegations of racism. On thursday, though, he dismissed the idea that he is biased in any way. The fbi has now joined the investigation along with the texas rangers. Back to you. John henry smith reporting for us. It was one year ago today that eric garner died after a new York Police Officer used a chokehold to wrestle him to the ground. Cell phone video of the arrest sparked nationwide protest about the Police Mistreatment of blacks. Garner had his hands up, and you can clearly hear him say that he could not breathe. The family accepted a 67 million settlement from the community but continue to push for charges in this case. Leticia james is the new york city advocate. I asked for her reflections on the year sense garners death. The video was very disturbing to all of us, and we all know that what we saw on the video eyes do not lie and we need reform not only in new york but across this country. So weve made some progress, but weve got a long way to go. What does reform look like to you . What would be meaningful reform . First of all, its not about money. Its about improveing police and Community Relations. Making sure that all Police Officers are equipped with a body camera. Also ive been before the Appellate Division for the release of the grand jury minutes because the grand jury and new york should not be sacrosanct. It should not be shielded from the watchful eyes of the public. We should know what happens behind closed doors. You want it to be a more open process . I want sunshine. I want to know what is happening in jurisdictions across this country. Last but not least i know in the city of new york we have reformed stop and frisk and what we need now is more diversity in the leadership of nypd and we need to track those Police Officers who have a track record of complaints in case where is there are violations of the fourth amendment. Earlier jonathan kay park garners july 17 2014, death. Everyone saw an abuse of police power with their own eyes. But in one video after another over the past year the nation had no choice but to see what africanamericans had been complaining about for decades. When youre black youre one misunderstanding or itchy trigger finger away from being shot and killed, and the videos from closed circuit television, cell phones dashboard or body cameras came at a wearying pace. Reflect on that. With Technology Something that people have experienced people of color throughout this nation theyre witnessing it for their own eyes. Its been a catalyst for change not only in new york but across this country. And we again have a long way to go in improveing the relations and recognizing the place police play in these issues. But i know there are many fine Police Officers across this country. That he very important to say. Very important. My sister is married to a police officer. And there are many who protect each and every day and ive met quite a few Police Officers who represent the finest in the nation. The president in his speech to the naacp a couple of days ago said that hes feeling more hopeful day because republicans and democrats who never agree on anything, but a lot of them agree on this. Are you more hopeful . I think you indicated a moment ago that you are. We meet get reform. How meaningful is up to debate, but it looks like reform is coming. As i always say i wake up every morning drunk on hope. I work feverishly each and every day to improve police and Community Relations and make our society a more perfect one. Im more hopeful. Thats so hard to do. To get continuity from one Administration One leadership to the next leadership major institutions, major corporations, for them to take seriously why diversity is positive in in in the most diverse multi culture place in the planet. We need leadership to reflect the breadth and the depth of the city. So i was elected. And i bring out individuals bring faith and belief in the future and belief in mankind and recognize that we can all live together as long as we understand one another and we get past these stereo types that we see and the notion that im some how different from you. The reality is that were one human family. Leticia james is new york citys public advocate. A community in mourning. We head back to shot intoga after the break to find out how that city is coping in the wake of tragedy. Officials say that there is an investigation. 24 hundreds turned down in the vigils for the marines. We have more on this. Allen. Good evening, were outside of down chattanooga. A prayer service, a multi Faith Prayer Service just letting out. Its two hours long. A thousand or more people. Were told that people from 20 or more congregations gathered in the church. Just an evening of unity sort of a communal way of coping with what theyve seen in the last 36 hours. All around town today we talked to people who were just trying to find some way to deal with the horse of yesterday. Its a time of unity. Its a time of acknowledging the fact that we are strong. We have suffered a great loss. But all not lost because we look to the lord for help. Feelings shared and religion shared at this Inter Faith Service in chattanooga. The day after mohammed azizs killing spree. Finding different in unity. Its a city still in shock claiming chattanooga strong with flags at halfstaff. Kimberly and her daughter brought water to the guards on duty. They just had to do something they said. My son passed away five years ago and my heart broke and i think my heart broke again for this community. For my children. We also talked to the nextdoor neighbor today of the shooter and the shooters family. Well hear more from her in the next hour on al jazeera. And we spoke with folks on the campus of the University Tennessee chattanooga as well. People trying to come to grips with what has happened. Lots of people dancing around, tony, the concept of blame and where it lies at this point. Just not willing to lean on that so early in this investigation and with things so raw at this point. Well, allen that gets me to my question. Are you seeing, sensing any tension in the city between various communities . Boy, we talked to a lot of folks today and really didnt sense that accept for one person, one woman who told me that chattanooga is armed to the teeth, and theyre mad as hell. She was angry with the government for not being able to stop this thing and said specifically it was about the government not doing more to protect the citizens from this. Other than that everybody we talked to was simply puzzled stunned, trying to find some way to work through this, get beyond it and move ahead. Difficult stuff to do at this point. For sure Allen Schauffler for us in chattanooga tennessee tennessee, thank you. Marines are being transport transported to dover delaware, the air force there houses the Largest Military mortuary. State troopers escorted them to the state line. And theyll determine the final disposition of their remains. Following yesterdays attacks, across the country they remain open for business. We go to American Canyon in california. What did you see there today and how would you describe the mood . Quiet, itquiet and subdued. The soldiers and sailors they spoke in hushed tones. They worked on their computers but they didnt hesitate to show up for work today. They say they often have days where no one walks through these doors to enlist. This is a liberal community and they say that often it is slow at these Recruitment Centers. While we were here one young man did show up, a 24yearold. He said that the killings of the four marines and injuries of three others made him mad and he wants to fight for his country. The Recruitment Centers are vulnerable. They sit in a strip mall where the public can come, and those inside are unarmed. It certainly is a conspicuous office here as it is for thousands of others across the country. We spoke to one expert in terrorism and said really the military is grappleing with how to secure Recruitment Centers like these. Because much their location within mini malls and strip malls most of the access to these facilities is walking. There is a lot of foot travel. The difficulty in which you harden them, and create a target that cant be penetrated is very difficult to do, very costly, expensive, and the government has to decide the degree they press hardening these facilities that are supposed to be welcoming to potential recruits to the military. He points out what should he do . Should they search bags . Should they get melt detectors . This debate will carry on. Lisa, thats interesting. These are publicfacing facilities but the question still remains. Why arent Recruitment Centers why arent the soldiers and marines who work there why arent they armed . Well, there is a policy that u. S. Personnel practically speaking like those we spoke to today, they said to have guns and arms in a strip mall like in is difficult in terms of liability. These are private businesses that want to lease these spaces to the military. So there are liability issues as well as practical issues. And they say that the military does not want this to look like a fortress. That would not be attractive to young recruits who may want to walk through the doors. Lisa, appreciate it. Lisa bernard for us in American Canyon california. Thank you. Now that he has been found guilty of the colorado theater massacre, it is on to the sentencing phase of the trial for james holmes. He could face face the Death Penalty for killing 12 people three years ago. We go to centennial colorado. Paul . Well, tony, its about been a little more than 24 hours since that resounding guilty verdict of guilty, guilty, guilty to all 165 charge being read out yesterday afternoon. This is really the first time that this community has had a chance to exhale in three months much less three months of the trial much less the three years since the crime itself. I spent part of the day speaking with one of the victims families. Jessica was 26 at the time when she was killed in the aurora theater. Her parents lived in texas at the time, but they moved here in a camper and sold most of their possessions in texas so they could be attendance of the trial and represent their daughter. I sat down with them at their camper, its parked in private property not here, we asked them what it was like when the verdict was read. When the first guilty came out it was like you could hear the room gowhooohand the tears started. It was such relief to be able to take that first deep breath in three years. First breath in three years. It really felt like the first deep breath in three years. Was there ever a time you had to leave the courtroom . Oh, many times. I left the courtroom when it was jesses autopsy. I knew i didnt want to see that. I knew what her wounds were. Ironically there was a break right after jesses autopsy, and even the media hardened media they were coming out crying and ashenned. I made a promise to my daughter, and i was going to keep it. So it became my job. It became my daily job. You get up, you go to the courthouse. You have a cup of coffee. You go in the courtroom. That was it. You do it. You do it. In fact, i cant imagine not doing it. Day after day tony, she was there in the courtroom. Now that the verdict is in, what sandy said was most important to her was to see holmes held accountable. She wanted the guilty verdict but interestingly now she says shes not concerned about whether he gets life in prison or the Death Penalty. Take a listen. Knowing that the killer would never see the light of day again no matter what. Hes gone. He is a dead man for all intents and purposes. Whether they give a life sentence or death sentence. Hes a dead man. Hes dial in prison one way or another. Now sandy and lonnie plan to take that camper on the road after things have wrapped up here. They started a charity a 501 c 3 in their daughters memory. They hope to counsel other victims of violence and start a National Movement that no one has to walk in their shoes ever again. A pretty strong woman there. Paul, appreciate it. Thank you. Communities around the country are passing laws to better protect victims of Domestic Violence. Too often people who are being attacked in their own homes are too afraid to call 911. In many cases they fear being evicted. For months this woman lived in fear when Police Responded to a call to her home when her boyfriend became violent. They warned her that two more calls there would be trouble. This mother of two faced eviction from her home because of a public nuisance ordinance. It allowed the city to evoke the landlords rental license if residents called 911 three times making the home a threestrike property. Landlords in turn threatened tenants who called for help with eviction forcing residents to face a fearful dilemma. How dangerous did it get . How bad did it get for you . It got real bad. I got my lip bit off. Hit in the head with with an ashtray and then took a piece of the ashtray and slit my neck down here. All this time you couldnt wall the police. All that have happened in one night. With wounds too great to ignore she was airlifted to a nearby trauma center. The next morning the 26th, my landlord was knocking on my window with a letter saying that i had 14 days to vacate the premises if not i would be locked up for criminal trespassing. So who is really getting hurt here . When youre dealing with a law tied to police calls youre going to harm Domestic Violence victims because we know that across the country most police departments, the biggest category of calls they receive are about Domestic Violence. Facing homelessness, she decided to fight back. She partnered with the aclu, filing a federal lawsuit against the city in 2013. The following year norristown settled agreeing to pay 495,000 and even repealing its ordinance. If it wasnt about the money. Mmhmm. What was it about for you . Saving another womans life so that she wouldnt have to go through the same thing that i went through having to pick which one like pick your poison. Get beat up or get put out. This summer they moved into a new home she was able to purchase with her settlement money. I want these municipalities to really understand the danger that they put people in. Somebody who is fighting for their life is not a nuisance. And sara hoyt joins me now. In addition to the lawsuit what else is being done to combat this . Take the state of new york. They have legislators taking bills trying to fix this ordinance. They want it on the books at the state level. However, this session ended and nothing was done with that bill. So besides Domestic Violence survivers, right who else is effected by this . Anyone who affected by a crime or someone who needs emergency services. Someone may be mentally ill and you need to call police for help or ambulance for help. This effects a Broad Spectrum of people. These are two very specific questions. This is across the entire countries. The aclu released a report with 59 of these types of ordinances across the country. But there was a different study that we found that had 100 ordinances in the state of illinois alone. Appreciate it. And you can see more of saras report on america tonight at 10 00 p. M. Eastern. Thats right here on al jazeera america. New and disturbing video has surfaced on the crash of Malaysian Airlines mh 17. It shows soldiers picking through the luggage. Charles stratford al jazeera, eastern ukraine. The trump factor, how the real estate mogul is changing the debate on immigration. Plus nasa is describing it as beautiful eye candy. The latest images of pluto 3000000000 miles away. Well, a quit update on the story were following here. In the video here. This is a wildfire burning. What is interesting you dont see the wildfire right now because the wildfire apparently jumped the highway and set a couple of vehicles on fire. We understand that at least ten vehicles have burned. The shots that youre seeing here is of a car carrier on fire. Big black smoke. And as you know vehicles on that card carrier have fuel tanks. We dont know if they were full at the time but the smoke seems to indicate yes. This is happening just outside of the mojave desert. There are at least four lanes on that highway. Are you okay . On that highway. And weve got fire crews on the scene as well. Some of them are stuck in traffic. You can see here there is quite a backup there. Were talking about the southbound lanes of this freeway that are closed because the flames. The highway is the main route from los angeles to los angeles. Is that i15 . Typically jammed at this time of the afternoon. Problems there on i15. Two republican president ial candidates said that the death of four marines in tennessee hoe it is time to eliminate gunfree zones on military bases. The first was donald trump. Then jeb bush said the same. The four marines killed thursday when a lone gunman open fired in two separate facilities in chaing into chachattanooga. Trump tweeted get rid of gunfree zones. The four great marines who were just shot never had a chance. Highly trained but helpless without guns. Now leading in several g. O. P. Polls as. His popularity is due in large part for what he has to say about immigration. He is the gift that keeps on giving. Were housing people from all over the world that other countries dont want. Donald trump recently met with families of americans killed by undocumented immigrants. Illegals come in, and the illegals killed their children. We better get smart in the United States. And in phoenix he drew thousands of people to a rally. Mexico, i respect the country. Theyre taking our jobs. Theyre taking our manufacturing. Theyre taking our money. Theyre taking everything, and theyre killing us at the border. As a billionaire developer beauty pageant owner and Reality Television star dont trump never had a problem standing out. But his president ial campaign seems to have broken new ground. In his announcement speech he described undocumented mexican immigrants this way. Theyre bringing drugs. Theyre bringing crime. Theyre rapists, and some i assume are good people. That qualifier at the end did nothing to prevent the ensuing firestorm, and almost immediately other republican president ial candidates pounced. Hes doing this to inflame incite and draw attention, which seems to be his organizing principle of his campaign. He doesnt represent the Republican Party or its values. I think hes a wrecking ball for the future of the Republican Party with the Hispanic Community and we need to push back. Others showed trump sympathy. I salute trump for addressing the need to address immigration. While g. O. P. Voters believe that republicans cannot win the white house without more latino support. Well take our country back. And there has been a spark of latino anger. Donald trump is a clown. Democratic representative said that hispanic Voter Registration has skyrocketed. Donald trump is a Voter Registration machine for the Democratic Party and for the latino community. Every time he opens his mouth people register to vote, and its guaranteed that theyll vote next november 2016. Trump Party Leaders have urged trump to soften his rhetoric, and he has tried to offer clarifications. I have great relationships with mexican people. I have many people who work for me who are mexican. Theyre phenomenal people. I love them. Now republican establishment figures are not sure whether to condemn trump and therefore give him more attention or ignore him. Because we have stupid leaders. Trump has proven difficult to ignore even for a mexican drug lord. When Joaquin Guzman El Chapo Escaped from prison, trump said he is everything that is wrong with mexico and promised to kick his ass. Its more fuel for a president ial campaign that has put the Republican Party on notice. The word is getting out that we have to stop illegal immigration. We have to. We have to. David shuster al jazeera. More on the trump factor here on inside story at 11 30 p. M. Eastern time. For a look at what is coming up at the top of the hour, John Seigenthaler is here. Many people of faith are gathering in chattanooga tennessee, for a prayer visual. Well look at how the city is coping with the murder of four marines plus the update into the investigation of the suspect. Also tonight a Southern California beach closed for two months because of an oil spill is open again. But is it really clean . Community leaders are critical because the Company Responsible for this bill also helps oversee the cleanup. Again any clearthinking person would understand having the responsible party or in this case the polluter be part of that to determine if your beach is clean isi would say is inappropriate at best. A community struggled to make sure that the responsible parties are held accountable. Just a couple of stories well have when we see new three minutes. Appreciate it. Thank you. Thats all of our time. Im tony harris in new york. John is back with us in just a couple of minutes. Hi everyone this is al jazeera america. Im john siegenthaler.
